The lignite mines in the Latrobe Valley of Victoria/Australia have been using continuously operating mining systems for more than 50 years. The relatively small bucket chain dredgers of the early years have been progressively displaced by bucket wheel dredgers with increasing size, increasing capacity and increasing service weight. The large machines for the new open pit Loy Yang have a bucket wheel outreach of 46m, an effective capacity of 3350 bm' coal/h respective 2500 bm' overburden/h and a serv- ice weight of approx. 4500 t. The time between signing of con- tract and starting of operation for these machines is at least four years. The high service weight, the resulting high capital invest- ment and the long period for design, design review, manufac- turing, erection and commissioning of these machines directed the SECV to investigate a possible application of compact dredgers for the Latrobe Valley.

In recent years there have been a number of excellent towns built for mining communities in remote parts of Australia. Planning has been thorough, and very large capital expenditures have been made by companies to provide high standards of accommodation, services and amenities. But so often the phrase 'company town' comes to be applied, expressing the frustrations of the residents, working for a single employer who dominates their lives, and of the company, which would prefer not to have to build and operate a town. The much-vaunted early success of some iron ore, bauxite and coal projects has led to a belief that the success of all mining projects is assured. Those holding this belief ignore the vagaries of mineral deposits and of markets, and the need to amortise large high-risk capital expenditures, much of which is spent on social and industrial infrastruc- ture. The stack-gas scubber effluent from base metal smelters often contain 20-100 ppm of oxidized selenium salts. Due to their toxicity, these must be removed from solution prior to release of the effluent to the environment. Many species of microorganisms including Corynebacterium diotheriae, Neurospora crassa, Candida albicans, Escherichia coli and various species of Salmonella are capable of assimilating oxidized selenium and reducing it intracellularly to red amorphous selenium. CANMET in cooperation with several companies has developed a biological process to recover selenium from dilute solutions. The laboratory, mini-pilot plant and the large industrial pilot- plant studies leading to the development of this process will be described.

Garnierite mineralogy in saprolitic ore of the Goro lateritic nickel deposit, New Caledonia , was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron microprobe (EMP) analyses. These conspicuously, green-coloured phases occur either as submillimetre to centimetresized veins or as æbookletsÆ arranged in, macroscopic (subcentimetre sized), accordionlike structures supported in an undifferentiated matrix of mixed ÿ7+ and ÿ10+ phases. Within the veins, nickel for Mg solid solution increased from ten wt per cent NiO at the edge to 34 wt per cent NiO at the core, with vein edges comprising Ni-kerolite with <1.5 Ni per formula unit (pfu) grading to pimelite containing >1.5 Ni pfu at vein cores. The æbookletsÆ comprised nTpouite of formula, (Mg0.67Ni1.59Fe3+0.05)(Si2.17Al0.22)O5(OH)4 and averaged 30 per cent NiO. SEM element mapping highlighted the distribution and mineralogical association of Ni and Mg and emphasised the inverse relationship between Ni and Mg at the macroscopic (thin-section) scale. The electrical conductivity of electrolytes is very important in metal electrowinning and electrorefining processes as it has a very large influence on the energy consumption. There are few measurements of the electrical conductivity of zinc electrowinning electrolytes available. The electrical conductivity of zinc electrowinning electrolytes were measured over the following range of concentrations, 100 to 200 g/L H2SO4, 0 to 80 g/L Zn and 0 to 20 g/L Mg, at temperatures from 25 to 60 C. The specific conductivity of zinc electrowinning electrolytes may be expressed as a function of concentrations of sulphuric acid, zinc and magnesium and temperature by the following equation: k(S/cm) = 0.004 + 0.00115 t + 0.00282 [H2SO4] t - 0.00114 [M] t + 0.3442 [H2SO4] - 0.0451 [1-12SO4]2 - 0.1058 [M]ò[H2SO4] - 0.0224 (M] + 0.0286 [M] 2 where t is temperature (C), [H2S04](moI/L) is sulphuric acid concentration and [M](mol/L) is a sum of zinc and magnesium concentrations, ([Zn]+[Mg]). The specific conductivity of zinc electrolytes is a function of the concentrations of the hydrogen ion and free water molecule, which are calculated by taking into account the second ionisation constant of sulphuric acid and the stability- constants of zinc-sulphate and magnesium-sulphate complexes at 25 C.

How aqueous fluids move through rocks and minerals is a question of possible pathways and mechanisms. Existing pathways such as fractures and grain or mineral boundaries provide obvious channels for fluid movement. We show how minerals reactive in the presence of an interfacial fluid can be replaced by new product phases through a process of interface-coupled dissolution-reprecipitation. A resulting porosity in the new phase provides a new pathway for fluid movement and therefore mass transport through the mineral, which progressively reacts at a moving interface. Eventually fluids of new and changing composition can pass through originally solid minerals and move on further, taking remobilised elements with them, to be reprecipitated whenever the chemical and/or physical conditions allow. One such example is albitisation of rocks associated with mineralisation.

Tower Mills are used at Aberfoyle's newly commissioned Hellyer base metal sulphide concentrator. Hellyer ore is particularly fine grained. To achieve adequate liberation fine grinding is necessary. Three Tower Mills are used on regrind duties, grinding to less than 20 microns. The physical arrangement, material flows and grinding characteristics for the Hellyer Tower Mills are described. The mills have performed satisfactorily, both in size reduction and power efficiency. Wear parts must be inspected and changed more often than with ball Mills. To date, 92 per cent availability has been achieved. As parts and maintenance routines are rationalised, this is expected to improve to 96 per cent. Modifications to wear parts for the Hellyer Tower Mills are discussed.lhc Tower Mill grinding environment is highly reducing. The impact of Tower Mill regrind on downstream flotation is discussed.

The concept of underground grinding is not new, but to a metallurgist and a mining engineer this could be considered unconventional. The idea of pumping a ground slurry several hundred metres from underground in a single lift could also be considered to present a daunting engineering challenge. Using a practical example of a mine in Australia where the owners have requested not to be identified, this paper challenges the conventional thoughts on these concepts and shows that with basic sound engineering practices the production of a ground slurry from underground could potentially provide significant operating cost savings. The supply of ore from the underground mine is currently drawn from depths approaching 800 m below the surface. The cost of hauling the ore to the existing underground crushing station located 500 m below surface has been steadily increasing. A number of alternatives to reduce the mining and processing unit operating costs were examined by Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) and the mining company. The most radical of these is the use of hydraulic hoisting of ore at an increased production rate. Numerous questions were asked, such as: How does one get a SAG mill or an HPGR crusher underground? Where does one locate a grinding mill underground? Does the technology exist to pump the slurry to surface in a single lift? What will be the cost benefits? What are the risks involved? The study covered the two main technical issues underlying the potential benefits. Firstly, technical evaluations were undertaken on the pumping technology currently available for single and multiple lifts to surface. Secondly, the issues relating to the feasibility of delivering and locating a SAG mill underground were reviewed. Although the capital costs for this project are significant, the operating cost savings showed a potential payback period of less than two years, and furthermore provide the basis for an increased mine life, especially at lower metal prices.

Two industrial case studies in which detailed investigation of the flow behaviour of mineral slurries is used to assess the feasibility of pipeline solid transport are described. The first example deals with the pumping of highly concentrated bauxite tailings to disposal, while the second exam- ple examines the possibility of transporting high-density Victorian brown coal slurries which previously has been thought as uneconomical. It is demonstrated that these typical solid handling problems can be solved by a good understanding of the rheology of suspensions.

A review of all major TBM projects from 1974 to 1990 has been undertaken and the results entered into a database. A similar database was prepared from information obtained from a principal TBM manufacturer covering the period 1952 to 1990. The database includes information such as machine specifications, machine performance data, tunnel specifications and ground characteristics. The database can be used as a guide to gauge potential machine performance in a range of ground conditions and tunnel geometries. The review also indicates that current TBM technology is limited to certain ground strength conditions.

This paper presents a case study that describes the selection, development, engineering and construction of a process plant for the biological oxidative pre-treatment of a refractory pyrite-arsenopyrite gold ore flotation concentrate. Prefeasibility and feasibility study resource modeling, metallurgical testwork, and environmental and engineering studies are outlined. Options considered for oxidation of the ore, which examine cost, risk, operability, recovery, engineering and environmental aspects are compared, with particular reference to pressure and biological oxidation. The BIOX« biological oxidation process was selected as the preferred oxidation process and the flow sheet for this process is presented. Selection of the BOIX« process resulted in special requirements for the feed preparation circuit, residue treatment and disposal, materials of construction and engineering. Use of a biological process in ore treatment also introduces particular process and engineering risks the management of which are discussed.

The Central Extended Orebody is located within the Cracow Goldfield approximately 360 km northwest of Brisbane and approximately 220 km west of Bundaberg. It is an epithermal gold deposit hosted by the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian Camboon Andesite. The lode was mined by open cut methods and produced 170 458 tonnes of ore at 5.62 g/t gold.The geology of the rit is relatively simple, comprising two rock types, trachyandesite and rhyolite which have been sub-divided into several units. The trachyandesite is sub-divided into three rock types: brecciated trachyandesite which is the most widespread, hydraulically fractured trachyandesite hosts the mineralisation and the third sub-unit is chloritised hydraulically fractured trachyandesite and has no associated mineralisation. The mineralisation is confined to quartz veins in hydraulically fractured trachyandesite. Several phases of brecciation and subsequent quartz and quartz/adularia vein injection are evident although not all phases are mineralised. Two rhyolite dykes intrude the trachyandesite one is monolithic, the other is sub-divided into hydraulically fractured rhyolite (barren), silicified rhyolite and auto-brecciated rhyolite.

The Bastnäs-type magnetite-skarn-hosted rare earth element (REE) mineralisations are located in the Palaeoproterozoic Bergslagen ore province, central Sweden, and occur along a ca 100 km long belt of 1.90–1.87 Ga metavolcanosedimentary rocks. Ten different Bastnäs-type deposits have been sampled in order to assess the origin of ore-forming fluids in these systems. Magnetite and quartz have d18O values ranging from -2.3 to +1.1‰ and +7.2 to +8.3‰ respectively. Mineralised carbonates have d18O values between +5.8 and +7.2‰ and d13C values between -5.4 and -3.3‰. Temperature calculations based on the O-isotope composition of mineral pairs, combined with available fluid inclusion data, suggest primary mineralisation at ca 650–400°C. For these temperatures, calculated equilibrium fluids have d18O values that range from those typical of magmatic fluids (+6 to +8‰) to lower values (down to +3‰). Variation in carbonate O and C isotope data are consistent with interaction between local Palaeoproterozoic carbonate rocks (d18O = +12.5 to +19.6‰ and d13C = -1.8 to +1.7‰) and fluids of a magmatic origin. It is suggested that the Bastnäs-type REE-magnetite mineralisations formed as a result of reactions between local carbonate units and high-temperature, magmatic-dominated hydrothermal fluids during 1.90–1.87 Ga (Svecofennian) syn-volcanic activity.CITATION:Sahlström, F, Jonsson, E, Högdahl, K, Harris, C, Troll, V R and Jolis, E M, 2015. Feasibility is a value improvement process for projects. At any stage in project development, a feasibility study can be undertaken, but although the scope generally remains unchanged the extent of detail and level of accuracy usually increases with time. The main scope elements are a business definition, project description and an execution plan. The studies are designed to assess the potential of the project and to secure funding for on-going examination. Invariably, the investigations loop back to earlier stages to establish more appropriate development criteria but a critical stage is reached when a project construction decision is requested. This feasibility study requires very detailed presentation and analysis to a higher accuracy for the owner(s) and their potential lender(s).

The mineralised members of the Brockman Iron Formation mined at Mt Whaleback are overlain and underlain by shale horizons. To maximise resource recovery, waste movement within the life of mine plan includes mining of the:unmineralised banded iron formation (BIF), Mt Whaleback Shale, Mt McRae Shale, Mt Sylvia Formation, and parts of the Wittenoom and Jeerinah Formation. With the exception of BIFs, all other units contain zones with varying amounts of sulphides and carbon û æreactive shaleÆ. Reactive shale has a propensity to self-heat and can react with some explosives, resulting in spontaneous explosion. Sulphide rich zones also have the potential to generate acid rock drainage (ARD). Mining reactive shale at the Mt Whaleback mine must be undertaken in a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible manner. Key tasks in the mining process include:100 per cent identification of blastholes that may contain reactive shale; 100 per cent correct loading of blastholes with specified blasting products; 100 per cent of reactive shale mined, hauled and dumped in designated overburden storage areas; 100 per cent containment and treatment of ARD water onsite; and ongoing research into ARD, self-heating and spontaneous combustion. Successful mining of reactive shale requires constant co-ordination between the geology, mine planning, mining and environment departments.

A liquid phase sintering (LPS) process for preparing basket anodes from nickel powder has been scaled-up and the innuence of compact green density and sulphur content, as well as sintering conditions (period and syngas now.rate) on the perfonnance of anodes has been evaluated. The product anodes have been tested in an industrial electroplating tank. It is concluded that if anode residues are to be minimised, then with a sintering temperature of 960"C, compact green density needs to be as high as economically achievable (85 - 87 per cent density of solid nickel) and the sintering period approximately 40 minutes. With these constraints, if residual sulphur contents of anodes are to be kept as low as those of commercial anodes, then the sulphur content of the green compacts would need to be less than 1670 ppm. At the same time, it is also found that residual sulphur concentrations as high as 2000 ppm are beneficial to anode pcrfonnancc and not detrimental to the quality of the electroplate. The ability of the LPS process to produce marketable nickel anodes for the electroplating industry is clearly demonstrated.

Experience with tyre wear on Wabco 85C rear dump trucks is then outlined, concen- trating on wheel camber, wheel alignment, truck speed, tyre pressure, loading and haul road design. T T.1TUnilhTPTTnAT The Groote Eylandt Mining Company Pty. Limited mines and beneficiates sedimentary manganese ores from a series of orebodies occurring in the western part of the island. The island is one of a group on the western side of the Gulf of Carpentaria, about 50 kilometres from the Arnhem Land coast and about 650 kilometres from Darwin. Whilst capacity of the mine is presently 2.3 mil- lion tonnes of product per annum, current production has been reduced to just more than half this figure, due to a general mar- ket recession.

The paper describes the detailed hydrogeological studies carried out prior to the sinking of twin shafts at British Coal's new mine at Asfordby, Leicestershire, UK. The test methods for assessing potential groundwater inflows to the shafts are discussed and details are given of the ground freezing scheme employed through the major aquifer zone in the Sherwood Sandstone at a depth of 375 metres. During shaft sinking pressure recovery tests were carried out to further assess potential inflows and the results are compared with those from the surface tests prior to sinking.
