The major strata control considerations which affect the optimisation of roadway driveage in highly stressed strata is the performance of reinforcement placed and the extent of stress induced rock deformation. High development rates and opening stability requires efficient rock reinforcement and stress relief strategies which maximise the integrity of the rock about roadways created. Current studies demonstrate the capability to reduce lateral stress distributions across panels and research is aimed toward a higher capacity bolting system. It is the intention to provide industry with more efficient reinforcement and stress control alternatives which will allow high production development equipment to operate without the restriction of delays caused by poor ground Conditions.

Non-intrusive methods for the reliable determination of dragline bucket and rigging performance have been achieved using physical modelling. Modelling offers a logical first step towards developing mathematical simulation models. The process of physical modelling has been applied successfully to predict dragline bucket performance and capacity as well as to demonstrate the effect of varying dump rope length on performance. ACIRL's Surface Miming Group has used physical modelling to carry out dragline bucket sizing for a new high productivity bucket and compared performance with Throng Coal's existing dragline bucket. The predicted bucket performance has since been confirmed in the field using dragline monitoring techniques.

The crusher development programme for 7ft Super Extra Heavy Duty (SXHD) Symons cone crushers commenced in 1984. The main objective of the programme was to run the crushers at maxi- mum power for the full life of the liners. This would give a finer product sizing enabling grinding and flotation plant throughput to be maximised. The study was conducted along two basic lines of attack, the first main- taining an effective profile through the life of the liners, the second improv- ing the properties of the liners. It has been found that crusher liner life can be extended and crushing efficiency improved by modification of liner composition and profile.

The major operational objectives of a mine water resource management system (WRMS) are to supply the water needs of the mine and mill, to minimise disturbance to mining due to rainfall flooding or seepage and to dispose of excess water. Historically, company management have placed a significantly lower emphasis on managing the WRMS as compared to managing production. Changing Government legislation concerned with the disposal of water from mine sites is, in many cases making mining companies look more closely at how they manage their water. For example, within the next few years it is likely that prior to mining approval by the Government, mining operations will have to submit water management plans/budgets and contingency strategies in addition to operational plans. While the formulation of a comprehensive water management plan/budget is an additional cost to the company at the mine establishment stage, such plans can be beneficial to the operation in the longer term.The two keys for the efficient design, operation and development of a WRMS are the establishment of written goals which have managerial priority and secondly, access to appropriate good quality data. Managerial priority towards the WRMS will increase as a consequence of the education of mine operators in the benefits to the operation of good WRMS management or less desirably as a requirement to meet Government legislation. The collection of appropriate WRMS data is a more complex issue and to obtain information efficiently and cost effectively relies on the clear definition of the data application.

In order to meet the increasing demand for coal for their Newcastle Steel Works, the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd., on June 5, 1937, approved of a scheme to sink a tunnel to the Victoria Seam at their Burwood Colliery. This seam was virgin at this locality and lay nominally horizontal at a depth of 320ft. vertical from the surface.For the purpose of despatch of the coal produced it was decided that the tunnel be equipped with a rubber belt conveyor system.This was a comparatively new departure in Australia, and, indeed, was one of the first installations of its kind in the world, designed to raise coal from considerable depth by this means. Later the tunnel was extended to the Borehole Seam, which lay nominally horizontal at a vertical depth of 600ft. from the surface. The whole installation is the subject of this paper.In planning a project of this kind, consideration had to be given to the following:-1. Location of tunnel with regard to existing surface railway sidings and shafts.2. Ultimate tonnage required.3. Width and construction of belt.4. Speed of belt.5. Inclination of belts.6. The Olympic Dam smelter facility processes copper concentrate feed using direct-to-blister smelting technology to support the current site production rate of 225 000 t/a copper. The metallurgical control of the Olympic Dam smelter is largely managed from a single central control room. Control room operation and management is therefore a key function in ensuring safe and reliable operation of the smelter, including identifying and initiating control of abnormal events. As part of a consolidated smelter reliability improvement program, a team consisting of process and control system engineers was formed. The teamÆs charter was to address and resolve the alarm flooding issues being faced by the control room technicians and the lack of an up-to-date base of supporting functional documentation. The project was successfully resourced with WorleyParsons metallurgists, Citect PLC technicians and the on-site technical team. Implementation was conducted over a 12 month period with the goal of achieving best practice alarm levels. The goal was achieved through a systematic process of alarm design review that analysed every configured alarm versus best practice design standards. Innovative concepts such as group-based alarms, first-up interlock displays, graphic only alarming, alarm help and alarm shelving were developed and implemented in conjunction with improved alarm masking. Total configured alarms were reduced from 20 000 to 5000 while the alarm rates were reduced from in excess of 200 alarms per hour per controlling technician to best practice levels of less than 12 alarms per hour per controlling technician. Completion of this program has provided a firm foundation for implementing further control optimisation and was a key activity in supporting sustained smelter reliability levels.

The Western Mining Corporation mining lease on the Bendigo Goldfield measures 5krri x 18km with more than 20 anticlinal folds parallelling th long north-south boundaries. Numerous closely spaced shafts and extensive underground workings on the reef lines along the folds flooded with groundwater following the progressive abandonment of the field. Preliminary water sampling and assessment demonstrated that a major dewatering programme and acceptable disposal methods were necessary to dewater interconnected old workings in areas of interest prior to any underground work taking place. A field wide geohydolic investigation was undertaken to establish geohydraulic parameters, groundwater recharge rates and water qualities. Data from the field investigation together with estimates of the volume geometry of the submerged workings as obtained from old mine plans, production history, and limited pump testing results were used with an appropriate analytical model to obtain estimates of water discharge rates required to reach various dewatering targets. Water disposal options were limited by relatively high salinities, arsenic levels, contained hydrogen sulphide, and the mine locations within the urban areas surrounding Bendigo. Direct disposal to the surface drainage system could not be considered, treatment to acceptable discharge standards was not economically feasible, and it was necessary to adopt a strategy of collection, containment, and evaporation.

Highly weathered ground, limited collar options and the need to achieve a desired outcome at the lowest possible cost led to the need to adopt a construction approach that had no established design methodology. The newest ventilation shaft at Mandalay Resources’ Costerfield Operations had to be established to a depth of 30 m through poor ground best described as ‘sticky swelling clay’, some of which was contained within an old backfilled pit.The ability to excavate a traditional presink was not possible due to limited space and the introduction of men into the shaft was to be avoided due to the associated safety risks and corresponding increase in cost. Piling in conjunction with raise boring and remote fibrecrete application was identified as a possible solution that could achieve the desired outcome at an acceptable level of risk.Construction of the piles was challenging and required continual refinement until an acceptable level of productivity could be achieved. Limitations on concrete delivery was taken into consideration to ensure hole stand-up time was acceptable and re-drills were not required. The adoption of a set process from alignment, drilling, concrete placement and testing ensured the desired design was achieved. Mine operators should consider the use of piling as a method of shaft stabilisation for the portion of raise bored shaft that passes through the weathered zone.The importance of quality control and attention to detail through the entire shaft construction process cannot be underestimated as issues such as insufficient geotechnical investigation, pile and pilot hole deviation, concrete and fibrecrete quality, as well as delays in the application of fibrecrete can place the success of the project at risk.This paper outlines key learnings from a client’s perspective with regards to the concept, planning, design, execution and completion of a 3.1 m diameter raise bore shaft through both weathered and highly structured ground at the Augusta Mine.CITATION:Green, S and Austerberry, R, 2014. The Vickery Coal Mine commenced open cut mining operations in May 1991. All overburden and interburden is drilled and blasted for excavation by dragline or hydraulic excavator. The mode of operation adopted from the feasibility studies requires that throw blasting of the overburden be used to assist dragline productivity.This paper reviews the development of the drilling and blasting practices with particular emphasis on the throw blasting of the overburden and optimisation of costs. This review includes analysis of the pre-production drilling and blasting feasibility studies by comparison with actual results.

ICI Australia has been developing PC-based software to assist the blast engineer to design and monitor open pit blasts. The scope of this software differs significantly from commercially available mine design packages.The software is designed for routine use in a normal production environment. The system enables the engineer to produce practical documents which include: a drilling plan, a loading sheet, a hook-up diagram, an inventory of explosives and auxiliary items, and other data on the blast such as tonnages and powder factors.

The mine evaluation process, composed of the designing, planning and valuation of a mine project, is, among other variables, based on an estimated orebody model. However, as the information from the drill holes is limited, it is impossible to know with certainty the mineral content in each block within the estimated block model. Consequently, uncertainty about the value of metal grades, or other geological attributes, arises because of the lack of information at unsampled locations. This is one of the reasons why, in any mine operation, there will always exist a divergence between estimated and real values. Cut-off grade optimisation is the process used to determine the operating mining strategy (long-term production scheduling) that will maximise the total profit value (normally referred as the net present value (NPV)) of a mine operation. This is done by defining a dynamic cut-off grade policy which is constrained by the production capacity of the mining, mill and refining.Real options is a type of contract, written on real assets such as mining, oil and other natural resource industries, that gives you the right but not the obligation to exercise the contract. It is based on operational and managerial flexibility, which allow mine decision makers to react to either good or bad operational and economic events in the future. But, what do geostatistics and cut-off grade optimisation have to do with the application of real options in a mine project evaluation process? The objective of this paper is to answer the previous question by showing how geostatistics combined with cut-off grade optimisation are key tools for corporate/managerial decision makers, which allow them not only to analyse the resource/reserves of their projects, but also to generate operational strategies that can maximise project value by minimising the downside risk due to ore tonnes and grade uncertainties, while achieving operational and physical constraints such as mining and processing capacities. A real copper grade open pit mine project is used as a case study.

A 3D graphics modelling system has been applied to longhole stope ring design at Z.C. Mines, Broken Hill, NSW. This has been in operation for a four month period (January, 1988). The purpose of this application was to provide computer assistance to mine planning engineers and blasthole design draftsmen for the longhole design process, particularly by: 1. reducing the- volume of tracing, drafting and geometric manipulation which is a significant feature of the manual design process, 2. providing additional design drawings to enhance the conception and implementation of stoping design.

The aim of the study was to use quantitative mineralogical measurements to predict the processing characteristics of an ore. Samples were taken from a wide range of concentrators processing ores of lead, zinc, copper and nickel. QEM'SEM was used to measure the characteristics of the ore feeding the plant. Concentrate product samples, together with plant operating data were used to give concentrate grade, recovery and grind size information. It was found that the mineralogical measurements correlated well with the metallurgical parameters indicating that these techniques will be very useful for making predictions in feasibility studies and simple plant optimization.

The relevance of borehole and bore core evaluation to the design of underground coal mines is illustrated by considering the technical parameters of colliery design and the information from which they are constructed. The nature of this information is described, together with some methods for its storage, processing and presentation. Geophysical exploration techniques are compared as information sources. It is concluded that borehole and bore core evaluation is relevant and necessary for colliery design, but that optimum results will be obtained if drilling can be combined with geophysical techniques. Because of the inherent uncertainties in prediction of mining conditions the necessity of obtaining as much information as practicable from drilling evaluation is also stressed.

During 1991 - 1993 the author interviewed approximately thirty senior managers of varying responsibilities in either the engineering, construction or operation of a heavy industrial facility. The purpose of the exercise was to determine the factors driving a deterioration of the working relationship between the engineering and the operating company following practical completion of a major project. From the research a number of conclusions have been drawn as to the root cause of the deteriorating relationship. For this paper we are drawing on this initial research and our ongoing experience of solving problems of this nature to present some fundamentals that can be used to break the breakdown maintenance cycle.

Two ends of a longwall face are not only concentrated locations of equipment, but also provide ventilation and access. The roof strata stability here has an important influence on mining coal and safety. Based on field obser- vations in the gateways at Zaozhuang Colliery (Shandong Province) and model tests, the author developed a structural model of the overlying strata at the ends of the longwall face - the arc triangular cantilever plate - to which the elastic theory of plates can be applied. Factors influencing the stability of the cantilever plate and its breaking character- istics are discussed. Requirements and design parameters for supports at face ends are pro- posed, based on these factors.

Mineralogical study of the interactions between fluxes and iron-oxides helps to understand how magnetite oxidises to haematite during pellet firing. Samples of OneSteel magnetite pellets tested at COREM pilot plant were collected after three firing steps and were studied mineralogically. Preheated pellets revealed no particular microstructures related to the composition of fluxes but were more affected by their bed position. After kiln firing, the impacts of lime and magnesia became more apparent. Magnetite oxidation is complete in the cooling stage. The position and the microstructure of the residual magnetite can bring useful information that could æcompleteÆ the view of the firing cycle.

The coal mass flow monitor was developed to measure the instantaneous mass flow rate of pulverised coal to the copper reverberatory furnace at Mount Isa. The instrument was calibrated with an isokinetic coal sampler which was installed immediately downstream from the coal mass flow monitor. Readings from the coal mass flow monitor were used to control the feedrate of coal to the furnace and this helped to stabilise the furnace operation.Coal samples obtained from the isokinetic coal sampler were also sized using a Leeds and Northrup Microtrac analyser. The coal size was critical to reverberatory furnace performance. These developments significantly improved the overall combustion control of the furnace and gains of ten percent were made in the furnace thermal efficiency. Testwork on an auxiliary arch coal burner is also reported.

The link between the Lecco bypass and major road SS36 (Italy) requires the construction of a double two-way tunnel (through the mount San Martino carbonatic massif). The tunnel excavating section is about 90 sqm through mount San Martino carbonatic rocks. The mountain sides are unstable and are often the scene of large collapsing landslides (tens of thousand cubic metres). The tunnels are very close to the mountain sides. The use of blasting induces vibrations which may reach the Lecco built-up area. With a view to avoiding such dangers the excavating operations were carried out in two successive stages: - opening a pilot tunnel, whose section is about 10 square metres, by a full face TBM to eliminate the more intense vibrations which are generated by the first opening charges; - successive enlargement by blasting.
