Flue gases from electrical power station boilers, roasting, metallurgical and chemical plants could be treated by flotation using conventional flotation machines. The flue gases are introduced into the pulp instead of the air. The flotation media is a suspension of Ca(OH)2 or CaCO3 or a solution of NH4OH etc containing Na oleate as collector and frother. The SO2 and dust content of the initial flue gases were experimentally reduced by 100 to 1000 times in one flotation operation. The velocity of the flue gases through flotation machines could reach approximatively 0.4 to 0.5 m/s and more against 1.5 m/s reached in scrubber absorbers used for this purpose, but the quality of purification is expected to be better for flotation, which is essential for the cases of heavy polluted metallurgical and chemical flue gases. For some chemical plants the flue gases flotation media may be different and more suitable as compared to the above mentioned media. The proposed flotation method could be used for separation of dry grinded ores in the form of aerosols, with a realisation of flotation from a closed space (gas bubble in the pulp) onto the interface liquid-air where the particles are attached inside the bubbles.

The introduction of legal certification of mine managers is a matter of history. It was introduced as part of legislation for mine safety. It has been said that such legislat- ion was written in blood. Like all legislation this legislation is divided into three sections; commands, obligations and sanctions. While legislation in all States on this subject is similar, the differences are great enough to have prompted the preparation of a Uniform Code by the Annual Conference of Chief Inspectors of Mines. This Uniform Code has not been adopted fully by any State to date. Legal certification of mine managers has made managers more aware of the requirements of the legislation covering their industry, legislation that reads as a summary on past accidents and methods of preventing them. While budding managers spend considerable' time in their early years in the preparation for certification, history has shown that the industry has benefited from their efforts. A better knowledge of the safety acts by the managers has produced safer operations, and a higher standard of management has raised the technical standards of mining operations to a stage where Australia can be proud.

Risk and uncertainty are attached to mining projects, and making decisions, hedging, future investment and evaluation of mining projects depend on forecasting the future price. The future technologic developments in mining will be primarily influenced by the future commodity prices. A few approaches, with different confidences are proposed to predict price movement in the future. This research introduces a new comprehensive version of the mean reverting jump diffusion model for natural-resource commodity prices. The novel model proposes that the historical data of mineral commodities have three terms to demonstrate fluctuation of prices: mean reversion component, diffusion component and jump component. The model calculates each term individually to compute the future prices of mineral commodities. Subsequently, in the second section of the paper, the model is implemented for monthly historical data of gold price from January 1968 to May 2008. This research is investigating the relationship between the historical oil price and inflation with the gold price. This is followed by a future estimation of gold price fluctuations up to 2018. The results from the application of this new method are discussed in the context of how they accurately replicate the historical gold price and how they can predict the future gold price.

The Obuasi Mine in Ghana, West Africa is the largest producing gold mine in Africa, outside South Africa. The mine has changed from a mine producing from narrow vein, high grade quartz orebodies to a mine producing from wide, lower grade sulphide rebodies. Traditionally mining methods were cut and fill and sublevel caving. Now the preferred stoping methodologyis long hole open stoping. Transverse or longitudinal methods are both used, dependent on the orebody characteristics. The change has been technically, socially, economically and politicallychallenging and at times has tested the abilities of those responsible for the operation of the mine. However, the benefits have been many. Safety has improved significantly, ounces from underground have doubled. Productivityhas doubled and underground unit costs have reduced bya third. These achievements have allowed the Obuasi mine to staycompetiti ve in this time of falling gold price. During 1999 and 2000 a full review of the mining and processing operations was undertaken, and as a result, the mine is now in a phase of restructure. Efforts are being made across the mine to improve efficiencies and to reduce costs. The future for the Obuasi Mine is an exciting one.

In recent years a number of explosive blends including ANFO, emulsion and watergel products have been used in a variety of ground types and applications. These `standard' explosives' technologies are not new, but out of the uses and applications, have sprung a new generation of tailored explosives that match the ground type and the operating environment. This is in stark contrast to the norm, where various patterns and loading configurations have traditionally been designed to accommodate the explosive. This paper discusses these tailored explosives and the explosives' technology behind why they work. Active tailoring of explosive formulations can save mining dollars while essentially leaving the explosive price unchanged. Tailoring explosives may lead to increased rock breakage, heave, digging rates; lower digging maintenance costs and in some cases replacing earth moving machinery altogether. Tailored explosives may have other benefits such as reduced over pressure compared with standard alternatives. The tailoring of explosive performance generally involves three major methods (other than changing the bulk density and sensitivity): (i) replacing fast burning reactants with slower burning reactants or vice versa; or (ii) leaving the explosive intact and diluting the entire explosive with slow burning or `inert' material; or (iii) changing the concentration of the fuel/oxidiser mix. When tailoring explosives for particular applications, authorising, testing, costing, manufacturing, and delivery systems must also be taken into account.

The wide application of computers in beneficiation plants has resulted in the creation of a number of complex automatic control systems at all stages of ore dressing processes. To create such systems it is necessary to solve complex problems of analysis and calculation. The application of computers to solve these problems demands development of simple and effective methods of investigation and simulation of ore dressing process dynamics because all the known methods are complicated in usage and cannot guarantee the desired accuracy and quality of process control. A new grapho-analytical method of investigation and calculation of ore dressing flow sheet dynamics, worked out by the authors of this paper, is based on proportion method development and is used to construct dynamic characteristics of the investigated processes. It is possible to use the given method for investigating benefication schemes with flotation machines having non-linear static characteristics and circulating loads. The suggested method of investigation of concentration flow sheet dynamics allows us to obtain dynamic characteristics of technological process parameters in both linear and non-linear systems. Moreover, the final result can be obtained without labour consuming analytical calculations by a simple graphical construction based on the static characteristics of the known equipment and processes.

To establish the design and the capacity of the Stanwell Magnesium Plant, Australian Magnesium Corporation Ltd (AMC) with Fluor Australia has modelled the operation of the magnesium plant using ARENA Simulation Modelling. The reliability model has been used to evaluate: surge capacities required between different sections of the plant; critical equipment requiring standby capacity; the number of trains required for different sections of the plant; and potential capital cost reduction options. The reliability model was established using the detailed Process Flow Diagrams, reliability information from literature and maintenance, operation and start-up experience from the Demonstration Plant. The model was run with different plant configurations to assist AMC in determining the most effective configuration to provide the production capacity at the lowest capital cost. The model was not only able to confirm the plant capacity to the independent technical expert but was able to minimise quantitative risk by minimising the quantities of hazardous materials on site. Fluor Australia provided the ARENA simulation expertise and has used this software for optimising new plant design and to establish improvements in operating plants. Reliability modelling is a normal feature of chemical plant design but is rarely used in the resource industry. The experience gained by AMC in the modelling system has indicated that metallurgical plant design can be improved by the application of reliability modelling.

There is very little in Australian mining law that sets out the rights of mining tenement and exploration licence holders as against other parties who wish to carry out ground or aerial surveillance over those areas.There have already been several legal actions arising out of this lack, and more can be expected as the public places more rigorous constraints on corporate and individual behaviour. Field personnel, who are mainly fairly junior and less experienced, are entitled to some guidance from the minerals industry, guidance which up to now appears to have been either lacking or covering such a wide range of standards from corporation to corporation as to be virtually useless.Because each State writes its own laws there is no consistency, and the laws generally are lagging behind developments in the industry. In particular, the practice of granting mining tenements for sporadic exploration, a practice that is a leftover from much earlier mining law, has dotted the Australian continent with unattended and unmarked or poorly marked tenements that are difficult to find but confer on the holder prior rights to the minerals under them. Entry onto those areas in most jurisdictions is an offence and their existence compromises the efforts of regional explorers.This clearly unsatisfactory situation requires remedying, which is the purpose of these proposals. A more systematic approach to the granting of reconnaissance, regional and detailed exploration, mining, and retention rights will eliminate much of the problem. For the rest, a code of practice needs to be adopted as soon as possible.

Attraction, recruitment and retention of quality mining engineers is becoming increasingly difficult for many mining companies. Part of the problem is attracting young professionals, especially given the decline in graduating engineer numbers, and the other is balancing the new engineerÆs development with business needs. The evolution of the graduate program at Olympic Dam over the last five years has resulted in substantial benefits for both the engineer and the company. The program has developed to provide structured exposure to key areas of the mine enabling new engineers to step into vacated roles as the need arises. The pool of quality engineers generated by the graduate program is a buffer against high industry turnover and helps reduce future recruitment expenditure. Olympic DamÆs program goes beyond conventional recruitment of graduate engineers. Innovations designed to improve intake include the employment of graduate engineers as well as final year students, retraining of existing personnel from other backgrounds and fast track recruitment for previous vacation students. By employing a cross-section of professionals to complement the generic university graduate, the company takes full advantage of the relevant lifestyle experience belonging to the individual, which is a substantial factor in turnover. Study assistance and a salary paid for final year students and mature age students often creates a loyalty that lasts beyond graduation. Careful selection of vacation students increases the ease of recruitment at a later stage and ensures that full advantage is taken of the relationship developed previously between the company and young professional. The evolution of recruitment at Olympic Dam has seen a decline in the turnover statistics of young mining professionals.

Borehole breakout is a drilling induced phenomenon caused by overstress of rock around the borehole. Its depth usually aligns with the minimum horizontal principal stress direction. For this reason, it has been used to determine stress orientations and a series of researchers also argued its dimensions can be indicative of stress magnitudes. If the stress dependencies of breakout geometries are well understood, it is possible to estimate stress magnitudes based on these data. This paper investigates the influences of critical parameters on breakout dimensions, including absolute stress magnitudes, stress ratios and borehole diameter. Several experiments have been conducted on cubic (120 x 120 x 120 mm3) sandstone samples with pre-drilled holes (22 mm and 30 mm) under true tri-axial loading conditions using UNSW self-designed equipment. Experimental results confirm the increasing maximum horizontal principal stress magnitudes result in larger angular span and longer breakout depth at constant minimum horizontal and vertical principal stresses. There is also a considerable discrepancy observed between experimental results and the analytical model. The first difficulty encount.ered in preparing this paper was to find a definition of the word "special" as applied to steel. The first thought is "obviously any grade not mild steel" but this is an over-simplification, because the term "mild steel" covers a series of carbon ranges, each found from experience to be especially suited to the production of a particular rolled section.Even if the Australian structural mild steels are excluded it is found that no part of the plant here is independent of special steel.The face-man on Iron Monarch makes his bench safe by barring down with a 0.6% carbon steel bar. He bores a hole into the ironstone with a 0.75-0.8% carbon steel drill, driven by a jackhammer which is built of a variety of special steels. After it is shot down, the stone is lifted by an electric shovel, very few of whose steel components fall into the general category of structural grades of mild steel.Further special steels are met with in the truck into which the stone is loaded, the hauling electric locomotive, and the rails on which these .run. Even the permanent way uses more than one grade, e.g., the crossings experiencing heavy service have their frogs built with austenitic manganese steel inserts.Special steels play their part in the overhead crane which tips these trucks, and in the crushers into which they discharge, and so they can be followed right through the production line, and they are still there at the seaward end of the ship loading boom at the head of the WhyalIa ore jetty.

Climate change and global warming present a significant challenge as unsustainable levels of greenhouse gas emissions arising from human activities continue to be emitted. The cement industry is responsible for between five and ten per cent of annual world carbon dioxide emissions; most arising from the manufacture of Portland cement (PC). An effective way of reducing emissions is by incorporating supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) as partial PC replacements. SCMs are silicate or aluminosilicate based pozzolanic materials which, in finely divided form, combine with water and calcium hydroxide (lime), liberated by cement hydration, to form compounds exhibiting cementitious properties. Pitchstone is such an aluminosilicate and has the potential to act as an effective pozzolan for partial replacement of PC. In North Queensland, Australia, a vast deposit of pitchstone is mined and processed for expandable perlite aggregate. During the classification stage of the excavated natural material, waste pitchstone fines (PF) less than 0.5 mm in size are generated. This study evaluates the waste PF as a viable, eco-friendly pozzolan for the partial replacement of PC. The reactivity of the PF is compared to fly ash (FA), using the pozzolanic compressive strength activity index (SAI) after seven, 28, and 91 days ageing at 20 per cent and 40 per cent PC substitutions. PF was found to be comparable to FA as a pozzolan at 20 per cent PC substitution at all ages tested. However, for the 40 per cent substitution blends significant strength was only achieved at 91 days ageing for the FA blend. The pozzolanic reactivity was also investigated using thermogravimetric analysis to determine the degree of free lime present after 91 days. In all cases where an SCM was added, the free lime was observed to be consumed with increasing age.

Deep hydrothermal fluids adjacent to the Alpine Fault move through the brittle-ductile transition to mix with convecting fluids from near surface environments. These tectonically driven fluids evolve mainly from prograde metamorphism at mid crustal depth (ten kilometres) within the ductile regime which has been elevated due to advection and drag on the fault plane. Through the onset of brittle failure and cataclasis within Alpine Fault mylonites, fluid overpressuring results in hydrofracturing and localized implosion. Along the length of the Alpine Fault, hydrothermal alteration varies on most levels (Table 1). There is an observable increase in Fe-Mg carbonate between the Waitaha and Taramakau Rivers (between Ross and Aurthur's Pass, respectively). Field studies concentrate to the north east of the Arahura River, noted for historical mineral wealth. Late meteoric fluids move through cataclasite, brecciated mylonite, and other open fractures. Chloritisation is the major retrogressive phase. Dolomitic hydrofracture veins (Figure 1) within coherent mylonites contain iron and copper sulphides. Notably, the enrichment in Fe-Mg carbonate towards the Alpine-Hope Fault intersection seems to represent a region of enhanced permeability possibly related to shallow seismicity, increased regional faulting, footwall variation, strike-slip dip-slip distribution, and/or topographical anomalies (ie saddles). Isotope studies identifying an 'Inboard Fault Gouge Calcite Zone' correlate to values from the Main Divide region at the headwaters of the Arahura River (Browning Pass-Wilberforce Valley) (Becker et aI, 2000). These correlations are supported by rare arsenic anomalies (avg l06 ppm n = 5, Figure 2) found in both regions which suggest that fluids may be interconnected at depth.

As a basis for my address to you tonight I thought it might be opportune if we considered the great history of the mineral industry in Australia, and the contribution it has made to the development of the country. While it is perhaps interesting to review the achievements of the past there is also the opportunity to examine the developments of the future.The names generally given to the three periods of man's life on the earth-the Stone, the Bronze, and the Iron Ageand to which should perhaps now be added the Atomic Age, imply the vast importance of the progressive steps in 'man's discovery of minerals and the means of working them. They tell the story of his advance from the flint knife to the bronze celt, and then to the keen-edged iron weapon, and now to the possibilities of the peaceful application of atomic energy. Not only have the stories of gold, iron, copper and tin told a great deal of the history of the progress of mankind, but they have also traced the commercial and industrial growth of Australia over the last century.Gold in the 1850's was responsible for the most significant period of immigration Australia has ever had-when the population almost tripled in the ten years to 1860. Minerals were also responsible for opening up Australia and determining the pattern of settlement. As mineral finds were made, railways were constructed to these fields, then agricultural development followed.Then, as the industrial era started, minerals provided the raw material for Australia's rapid industrial expansion, and they have all contributed to the extent that they have made...

Mining of sulfide-based ore deposits typically creates a potential for release sulfate and acid to groundwater, and many operating mines are thus predicted to require long-term post-closure treatment of groundwater. Toward the goal of selecting an optimal treatment, this paper compares costs of four demonstrated technologies for long-term treatment of sulfate-contaminated groundwater: in situ biological reduction (ISR), in situ permeable reactive barrier (PRB) composed of compost and zero-valent iron (ZVI), and two ex situ æpump-and-treatÆ technologies ù ex situ biological reduction, and ex situ nanofiltration with lime precipitation. Costs for each technology are estimated for treatment of a model aquifer system containing sulfate-contaminated groundwater, with the goal of treating 1 m3/min of groundwater from 1500 mg/L sulfate to a target level of 500 mg/L. (Metal removal is typically achieved by these technologies, and thus excluded from this analysis.) Costs are estimated for each technology as a function of treatment duration (ten to 60 years) and, for PRB and ISR, required replacement frequency (ten to 60 years). Estimated costs include capital and operation and maintenance, using a seven per cent net discount rate. Results indicate that ex situ technologies (biological reduction and nanofiltration with lime precipitation) are the most expensive. In situ technologies may be much less expensive, with PRBs having by far the lowest potential cost, followed by ISR as the next least expensive. However, actual costs for the in situ technologies are very sensitive to poorly constrained parameters, particularly the ZVI content of the PRB, and the effective life of PRB and ISR systems. This large cost uncertainty supports delaying remedial actions where viable, and suggests that feasibility analyses are generally warranted for specific applications to focus on these sources of uncertainty.

The inauguration of a geological department for the mines of North Broken Hill Limited necessitated the provision of accurate plans and sections upon which geological facts and projections might be plotted.Unfortunately, the basic data were very inadequate. For the British Section, sill survey plans were available, but no regular stope plans. Filling surveys had been preserved for many stopes, but on innumerable pieces of tracing linen, without heights of any kind, and not altogether reliable (as indicated by the finding of very inconsistent duplicates). For the bulk of the old stopes no plans exist at all. The expenditure of much time and patience has resulted in the co-ordination of most of the existing stope data, but the British Section must for the rest of its life continue to have surprises in store, as has been the case for many years past. Manufacture and preservation of stope records has, of course, been on a sound footing during recent years. No reliable cross-sections of the British Section were available.The Marsh, Junction, and Junction North Sections have for the most part very poor data. In the North Section, level plans were fairly reliable, and cross sections of the lode made for ore reserve purposes have been preserved for quite a few years. No floor plans of stopes were kept, however, until a couple of years ago.Diamond Drill records vary in quality. Practically none exist for the Junction and Junction North Sections. The objectives of grade control remain unchanged but new methods are being developed to attain them. Since the early-1990s, an improvement in the power of mine site computers has made the geostatistical tools of conditional simulation more accessible. Optimisation of the grade control process on mine sites now involves two stages: optimisation of the sampling regime and optimisation of the interpretation of ore and waste boundaries. Optimisation of the sampling regime first requires an understanding of the nature of the mineralisation and in particular the impact of particle size on the sampling precision. This relationship, termed the Fundamental Error of sampling, enables an optimum subsampling protocol to be defined for the sample preparation and assaying. However, the actual sample collection method, whether drilling or trenching, must be correctly selected and the sampling grid should be optimised. The relative costs and benefits of various alternative sampling methods and grids can be determined using the method discussed. The use of the grade control data can also be optimised. In the past ore and waste boundaries were often defined using a linear interpolation algorithm that smoothed the data (such as polygonal, sectional, inverse distance squared or even kriging methods). Frequently the relative impact of ore loss and dilution could not be estimated. Conditional simulation to generate equiprobable alternative maps (realisations) can now be adopted to address these issues. A transfer function is then used to evaluate the similarities and differences between the maps. The Ore Block Optimisation (OBO¬) process is a transfer function that produces a three-dimensional model of the optimal ore block outlines. This provides a clear guide for the mining geologist to refine and mine. The nature of the transfer function and the inputs and outputs are discussed. In the past, reconciliation has been the `acid test' for any grade control system. Any ore blocking method based on conditional simulation can make use of the exhaustive data set to ensure that reconciliation between prediction and production will improve significantly. The OBO¬ method provides a guide to the mining geologist to ensure that the best ore blocks are mined. Misclassification between ore and waste is reduced, ore loss and dilution are minimised (and are measurable) and ore is optimally assigned to stockpiles of various cut-off grades. These advantages significantly enhance mine profitability and control of the mined grade.

Exploration for uranium in Australia has so far discovered reserves equal to 17.5% of the Western World's. The Australian uranium industry, when fully developed, will be one of the largest producers and possibly the largest exporter in the world. The world's nuclear industry is young, rapidly developing in size and technology and is subject to more social, political and regulatory controls than any other industry. This paper considers the probable development of Australia's uranium industry against a background of normal commercial parameters together with other factors which are peculiar to the nuclear industry. As the theme of this conference is "Australia's role in the World Mineral Indus- try" this paper concentrates on the commercial and practical aspects associated with the development of Australia's uranium resources in a world context.
