This paper presents a summary of tools and methods used for geotechnical assessments and monitoring systems at block caving mines. A critical review of these tools is given based on the authorÆs experience in block caving operations. The reviewed tools include cavability prediction, fragmentation evaluation, geotechnical monitoring systems, numerical stress analysis and others. Some of these tools have been developed under certain circumstances in particular mines and experience shows that their applications under different geological and mining conditions have often been difficult. Examples from block cave mines are also utilised in this paper to illustrate the importance of the further development of these tools, whilst possible improvements on these tools are also suggested.

In 1999, the Henderson Mine commissioned the Henderson 2000 project - a new truck haulage level, a new underground crusher and a 24 kilometre conveyor system to replace a 23-year old rail haulage system. Henderson has been able to continuously improve in almost all aspects of its rubber-tired mining. The rail haulage system represented one of the last barriers to continuous improvement to the overall plant performance. Many of the lessons learned in other areas of the mine were utilised to design the truck level. This paper chronicles the benchmarking, equipment selection and design of the level. Areas covered will include haulage trucks, level layout, ore chute design, traffic control, road design and crusher layout.

Rehabilitation of tailings impoundments is one of the most challenging aspects in mine closure, as not only does the potential for producing leachate pose a challenge to the rehabilitation designer, but also other aspects such as stability and settlement must be considered. The water balance of a tailings impoundment is unique in the sense that it usually hosts a pond that in turn causes a phreatic surface in the impoundment. The position of the phreatic surface defines the saturated and unsaturated zones in the impoundment, which of course varies spatially and temporally. Predictive modelling for this hydrologic system becomes difficult, as numerical models capable of analysing the combined saturated/unsaturated zones are not adequately refined to accurately solve the flux boundary problem for infiltration at the surface of the tailings. This paper describes the development of a flux boundary model that enabled accurate modelling of the unsaturated zone in the tailings impoundment at Kidston Gold Mine, Queensland, Australia. The technique made it possible to accurately predict the spatial variation of infiltration to the tailings as a result of the presence of the phreatic table. The conceptual model defines the boundaries for the Kidston tailings dam, based on a generalised cross-section through the dam. Firstly the shape of the top boundary is described as a function of the particle size of the tailings associated with particle segregation that occurs due to the hydraulic placement of tailings. This function was rigorously tested using in situ infiltration tests and laboratory materials testing. Defining the bottom boundary of the section, ie the phreatic level was done by physically monitoring the phreatic level with 42 piezometers strategically located on the tailings dam. Analysis of this data led to the fixing of this bottom boundary through the introduction of a function that mimicked the shape of the phreatic level. The material properties of the surface layer, specifically the saturated permeability that would govern the infiltration/exfiltration rates of moisture through the top boundary layer were defined on the basis of extensive field and laboratory material testing. A function for the saturated permeability was developed on the principles of particle segregation. Finally a procedure is described for the application of the new conceptual model for the evaluation of the spatial infiltration to a tailings surface using the rigorous one dimensional surface flux boundary code SoilCover. The solution of the calculation described above was then used as the top boundary condition in conventional three dimensional saturated/ unsaturated flow codes, and verified against measured seepage rates from the tailings impoundment under drains. It was concluded that the developed spatial flux function was in deed a most rigorous representation of reality. Although the methodology presented here was applied to the Kidston tailings impoundment only, the authors believe that the principles are directly transferable to any tailings impoundment that has a varying phreatic zone thickness due to the presence of a pond. The mathematical equations describing the typical cross-section would be site specific, but the approach and ultimate solution methodology would be directly transferable.

The Telfer Gold Mine, owned and operated by Newcrest Mining and located in Western Australia, is currently being expanded. A new underground sublevel cave development is proposed along with an appreciable expansion of the open pit. The Telfer area is generally subject to low rainfall, however, during the wet season cyclonic events can result in sizable rain events, which have the potential to cause substantial inflow. In addition to this, during the first five years (nominal) of the mineÆs life, there is the potential for drainage paths between the pit and the underground mine via decommissioned underground workings which lie directly under the pit. After this initial five year period the pit floor will be mined out below the old workings and will therefore no longer connect to the underground, however cave breakthrough to the surface may start to occur thus providing another water path into the underground mine. To arrive at an optimum, safe solution for dewatering the mine that successfully addressed the above items, a rigorous risk analysis was included as an integral part of the design process. This involved the determination of the probability of events occurring and the consequences of these occurrences. This was compared against the cost of mitigation for the various events. This paper outlines the process by which a safe concept addressing all the issues relating to dewatering the proposed mine has been arrived at. This process included: Establishing the pit catchment areas. These were based on historical run-off data and took into account practical mitigation works. Establishing an Average Recurrence Interval (ARI) based on reference material and historical rainfall data. Utilising a standard approach based on Australian Rainfall and Run-off (ARR) to calculate pumping and storage requirements for the various catchments. Analysing the 20 years of recorded rainfall in the Telfer area to establish the duration, magnitude and sequence of events. This analysis assisted in determining the surface run-off coefficient. Establishing potential water storage areas and determining the risks associated with using particular storage options. Establishing the percolation rate through the cave zone. A degree of uncertainty regarding the percolation rate in the cave zone required that the consequences of using various percolation rates were considered to aid in establishing the rate which was adopted. Establishing preliminary concepts and determining the most economically viable concept. Conducting a risk assessment based on the principles outlined by Australian Rainfall and Run-off (ARR) to confirm that the appropriate Average Recurrence Interval (ARI) had been selected. A risk assessment was also conducted in accordance with client requirements. Establishing the optimum pump station sizes and storage capacities. Establishing the appropriate numbers of duty and standby equipment. By using the foregoing process, which included a number of stages of risk analyses, an optimum dewatering system concept was produced.

A mineral systems approach was used to interpret precompetitive airborne mineral mapping geoscience data for iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) exploration in the Starra area, Eastern Succession, Mount Isa Inlier. Selected minerals were chosen to map possible source rocks/fluids as well as intersecting structural/fluid pathways that could have transported mineralising fluids into domains of contrasting rocks/fluids where there was potential for physicochemical gradients to precipitate metals. Ferric and ferrous iron contents and white mica abundance were useful mineral criteria to identify theMount Dore Granite of theWilliams-Naraku Batholith as a potential source of æoxidisedÆ fluids rich in Fe, K and potentially Cu-Au. The Mount Dore Shear Zone (MDSZ) intersects the western margin of this granite with the highest contents and changes in composition of the white mica are peripheral to this contact within the granite. This together, with the fact that the entire N-S length of the MDSZ in the study area (~16 km) is abundant in white mica are evidence of K-rich fluids had preferentially moved along this pathway. To the south, the MDSZ intersects a domain comprising massive ironstone bodies as well as numerous graphitic horizons. This interpreted æreducedÆ domain is well mapped using the æopaqueÆ mineral products, as well as by white mica, which is pervasively developed and extends 2 km either side of the MDSZ fault into the meta-sedimentary sequences. The chemistry of this white mica also changes progressively away from the MDSZ, becoming more Si-rich (longer wavelength) towards the contact with massive ironstone bodies in the west and the graphitic units in the east, both of which represent sites of known Cu-Au mineralisation. Beyond these contact zones of interpreted æoxidised fluidsÆ with reduced rocks/fluids, there is either a rapid change to Si-poor white mica and/or no white mica developed, ie major æchemicalÆ gradient change. These mineral mapping results provide evidence for a direct link between possible source rocks and sites of IOCG metal deposition as well as extending the associated alteration zonation which had previously been mapped/published at the metre-scale to the kilometre-scale. Mr Chairperson, respected leaders of the mining industry, ladies and gentlemen;   Good morning, Kiora, Nihao.   I am very honoured to give a speech to the 2005 New Zealand minerals conference. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to the Ministry of Economic Development to invite me to be part of this important event.   Today, I am going to talk about two themes: a brief introduction of ChinaÆs economic development, including ChinaÆs energy strategy; the good bilateral relations between China and New Zealand, its potential for further development and its relevance to our cooperation in the field of minerals and energy.   It is a well-known story that over the past 27 years, great changes have taken place in China. In 1978 when ChinaÆs reform and opening up just started, its gdp was near to only 150 billion usd dollars. By the year of 2004 it reached to 1.6 trillion usd, an average of yearly growth rate 9.4 per cent.   ChinaÆs great achievements are widely appreciated both in China and abroad. ChinaÆs development has not only improved the living standard of its own people, but also produced a huge market and brought about great opportunities for the world. Since ChinaÆs entry into WTO in 2001, China has imported near to 1.8 trillion usd dollars of goods, averaging a yearly imports of 500 billion usd dollars, creating for other countries and regions more than ten million jobs.   Our prediction is that in the next five years, ChinaÆs imports will be well over three trillion usd dollars. China will continue to serve as one of the leading growth engines for the future world economic development. Now China is on its great strive to achieve the goals of improving living standard for all the Chinese people. We are trying to reach a quadruple gdp of 2000 by the year of 2020, namely to reach gdp four trillion usd, a gdp per capita 3000 usd dollars.

The implementation of mass mining methods for large metalliferous deposits has led to the development and application of increasingly sophisticated automation and condition monitoring technologies in these mines. This technology aims to increase safety, equipment utilisation and monitoring of critical aspects of the underground ambient and geological environments. The communications networks required to support these aims and their associated technologies have evolved accordingly, and have done so in a demanding underground environment. The evolution of communication infrastructure for large underground mines has developed from basic analogue telephony to high-bandwidth optic fibre based systems. The latter is now the media of choice. More recently the developments in wireless broadband equipment designed specifically for underground environments have emerged to satisfy the needs of automation for mobile equipment and shaft conveyance communications. The use of internet protocols for industrial control and monitoring has led to the application of ethernet-based backbone networks as a standardised approach. There may also be a need for the integration of range of communications platforms in a mining operation to realise the full advantages offered by automation and condition monitoring technologies. As a result the design of the communications backbone networks for underground mines has started to become the domain of information technology professionals. Without these networks, the analysis of equipment utilisation is often not possible. The improvements that can be brought about by æsweating the assetsÆ and the transmission of business critical information are the most significant benefits of an integrated communications system. These benefits far outweigh the costs of strategic planning, subsequent specification and implementation of communication networks themselves. Future developments in mining systems and communications technology will continue to drive the demands placed upon communications networks as an essential mass mining infrastructure item. This paper outlines the benefits of secure high bandwidth backbone communications networks for mass mining operations and the need for a high degree of strategic thought and demand forecasting in the planning stages for these operations.

In April 2013, Rio Tinto Kennecott Copper’s (RTKC) Bingham Canyon mine experienced what is arguably the world’s largest ever in-pit slope failure. The failure initiated along a major, continuous, low-strength bedding fault, named the Manefay bed, and comprised approximately 145Mtonnes of rock and waste dump material. Initial East wall slope deformations were detected some months prior to catastrophic slope collapse by RTKC’s slope monitoring systems. However, the failure mechanism was different to that which had historically been experienced in the prior more-than-100 years of open pit mining. Failure occurred as two separate events, the initial one likely consisting of a frictional failure of rock materials along the Manefay bed itself, before a second phase of failure occurred, which included a large mass of old rail dump material. The combination of these events led to a much larger failure run-out than had been anticipated by the RTKC team which led to loss of, and damage to, mining equipment and infrastructure as well as significant interruption to mining activities. Due to the diligent monitoring of the slopes no safety impacts were experienced at the mine, and as such the details and learnings from this failure can readily be shared with the broader mining and geotechnical industries to avoid similar recurrences elsewhere. The development of a coal project must pass through a number of phases, taking it from a preliminary evaluation through to detailed mine planning. For each phase the cost of data acquisition and associated mining studies increases exponentially for linear improvement in confidence levels. Within each mine planning phase there are four main activities. These are the economic ordering of reserves, the development of optimum mining strategies, mine design and scheduling and finally the estimation and analysis of costs. The development of the optimum mining strategy is one of the most critical aspects of a mining evaluation and the application of economic criteria at this stage of the project is vital to the successful generation of an optimised mine design. A recommended method is the concept of Economic Ratio (ER) which expresses the likely cost of mining from a given location in a deposit in terms of the value of the product likely to be recovered. The most economic mining strategy will be to mine areas from low economic ratio to high economic ratio within the constraints of reasonable equipment application. When selecting equipment a particular machine should not be selected solely on comparison with other machines in isolation, but the total application must be analysed. In the final selection the decision should be based on whether or not it has a beneficial effect on overall project economics. The economic assessment must take into account the time value of money, so the real cost can be determined with adequate provision for capital and operating costs over different time spans.

The Archean Gossan Hill Group at Golden Grove, Western Australia, hosts two potentially economic volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits. The volcanic-sedimentary succession hosting this mineralisation is composed of a facies association which includes the products of rhyodacitic to,andesitic effusive volcanism, mass-flow sedimentation and concentrated hydrothermal fluid discharge, in a deep subaqueous setting. The Tertiary Kuroko deposits of Japan are widely compared to Archean volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits and a comparison of the facies associations hosting this style of mineralisation, in these two successions separated widely in time, allows a refinement of facies models suitable for exploration in ancient successions. The required deep subaqueous environment for the formation of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits places constraints on the physical processes that can operate during accumulation of the host stratigraphy. Limitations on the operation of physical processes is reflected by the resultant facies association which can be used to characterize suitable volcanic-sedimentary successions in which volcanogenic massive sulphide mineralisation may be present. The facies association includes: (1) proximal effusive volcanic products - lavas and associated autoclastic breccias (2) distal volcanic products - mass-flow resedimented pyroclastic debris (3) background sedimentation - reworked volcanogenic and terrigenous mass-flow sediments and (4) chemical sediments - exhalites including cherts, sulphides and oxides, with perhaps various carbonates and sulphates. Primary pyroclastic deposits are not expected to be present, other than distal water-lain air-fall deposits, derived from shallow to emergent basin margin explosive volcanic centres, which also provide a source for the resedimented pyroclastic debris.

Cyanided tailings produced by gold processing operations may cause environmental problems, because they contain pollutants such as arsenic, sulfur and cyanide compounds. Moreover, tailings containing economic metals such as Au, Ag, Cu, Pb and Zn, are potentially valuable resources. In this article, cyanided tailings are catalytically oxidised by nitric acid in the presence of air or oxygen. The resulting solids may be leached to recover Au and Ag. The solution can be used to prepare ferric sulfate or iron pigment. Gases released in the reactions were recycled and reused by oxidation and absorption. All of these greatly improve metal recovery and the reuse prospects of cyanided tailings. Under the following conditions where the initial temperature of oxidation is 80¦C; initial concentration of nitric acid is 30 per cent (by weight); feed proportion (nitric acid to cyanide tailings mass ratio) is 3:1 and reaction time is two hours, the conversion ratio of cyanided tailings is 90.06 per cent. At the same time pyrite in the cyanided tailings is oxidised effectively, gold recovery is as high as 92.3 per cent and nitric acid loss per cycle is only five per cent because of NOx recovery.

Regolith, the blanket of bedrock weathering products and surficial sediments, covers almost all of the landsurface. In Australia extensive areas are covered by regolith up to several hundred metres thick which is relatively old (extending back to the Mesozoic or possibly earlier) and largely complex. As such, it is poorly understood and is presently regarded as a significant hindrance to resources exploration. The regolith: obscures bedrock lithology and structure blankets ore deposits in the bedrock hosts surficial mineral deposits ranging from placers (gold, diamonds, platinum, mineral sands ....) to chemical precipitates (uranium, opal, gold, bauxite....). contains important groundwater resources. The application of surface exploration techniques without recognition or understanding of the regolith could result in wasteful expenditure. The understanding of the distribution and characteristics of the regolith in the context of its evolution and geomorphic history and its relationship to underlying bedrock will promote development of suitable geological, geophysical, geochemical and remote sensing techniques. It also will assist exploration industry with the interpretion of data from: geological mapping soil geochemical surveys stream sediment geochemical surveys airborne remote sensing airborne radiometric surveys other airborne geophysical surveys some ground geophysical surveys shallow drilling and so improve mineral exploration Strategies.

My early experience with the coal industry was in the latter half of the 1970s, where attention to only ones own æaccidentsÆ and concentration on behaviour controls were impeding the introduction of effective engineering controls such as ROPS, FOPS, roof support and residual current devices. Lack of the broad picture of personal damage and of relevant veridical (true saying) knowledge and data had to be overcome to achieve progress in reducing fatalities. Thirty years on, it is again necessary to take stock. How good is our knowledge, our data, our information on which we make decisions. Despite Australian all industry 1992-93 data showing 80.5 per cent of costs came from occurrences which permanently altered peopleÆs lives, New South Wales is still the only state reporting permanent disabilities. In 1991 - 1992, the rate of permanent disability per 1000 wage and salary earners was two. In 2000 - 2001, it was over four û more than doubled. Also strongly motivating is the huge cost. Industry carried 25 per cent of the $34.3 billion costs for 2000 - 2001, up ten per cent of 82.8 billion if the costs of pain, suffering and early death are included.

While objective selection and assessments are an accepted part of employing managers and other staff, they have had only a limited place when selecting mineworkers in Australia. Wambo Mining Corporation has used occupational testing as part of its recruitment process since 1994. For managers and staff in particular, it is considered this has contributed significantly to a 95 % fit of those appointees. In 1997 when Wambo undertook development of a new "on site" subsidiary underground mine called Wollemi Services, they wanted to select the most appropriate people in terms of skill and on the job performance. To achieve this they reviewed and improved their recruitment processes to facilitate selection and transfer of an initial intake of almost 50 staff and mineworkers.One of the issues for Human Resource Management was to provide an environment where employees could let go of previously held (but not necessarily individually believed) entrenched views about individual performance and assessment. It needed to be emphasised that performance could be objectively and fairly assessed. More importantly, the performance being assessed was the application of skills and that new skills could be learnt and individuals could choose to change Behaviour.

Most internationally traded iron ore resources are derived from multiple mine sites, transported to a port facility where they are blended and possibly further processed prior to shipping. Provided the proportion of contributions varies over a number of shipments an estimate can be made of the bias introduced by mine site sampling, analysis and materials handling systems, using zero-intercept multiple linear regression. Further regression applied to the residuals allows the error variances for the source mines to be estimated. Various sampling strategies are used by the industry. All have shipment-loading sampling on which payment or at least provisional payment is based. In most cases sampling prestockpile is used at mine sites to verify estimated production grades. Train grades are estimated from mine stockpile grades and in some cases train grades are verified by port input sampling. The methodology used is presented in this paper. Simulated data have been used and do not reflect the actual performance of any operator. The merits of the various systems and the implementation and potential limitations of our method are discussed more fully in a companion paper (Ziegelaar and Everett, 2010).

Drilling is one of the most, significant cost components of any stoping or develop- ment operation. Two of the factors contri- buting to the drilling cost are the supply and servicing of consumable items such as drill rods and bits. The purchase cost of consumable items can be controlled to a large extent by using the correct balance of quality and price. However, the service cost is a less easily controlled factor and it is in this area where potential savings are significant. In June, 1976 a six month trial period was commenced at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and at New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited with two separate suppliers supplying and ser- vicing all longhole drilling parties (one supplier for each mine) at a guaranteed cost per metre. As a result of this six month trial period a new contract was commenced in December, 1976 with one supplier supplying and servicing all longhole drilling parties at both ZC and NBHC for a twelve month period. This concept has now been in operation for over twelve months and has proved to be a significant means of slowing down the increas- ing cost associated with drilling operations.

Traditionally, the term ætotal systemÆ design applied to comminution conjures images of a design that addresses the usual business and operational drivers, including health, safety and environment (HSE), capital cost, operating cost, throughput and product size. In terms of the physical process, the mine to customer type studies also exemplifies an approach that satisfies a normal ætotal systemsÆ approach. As an industry there are drivers that are forcing a re-consideration of what we regard as our total system. This modification of drivers will require changes in approach and implementation to provide the best solutions. Some of the major changes that impact the drivers are shortage of skilled personnel, changing social attitudes to remote mine site work, greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE), quality of available orebodies and geographical location of new mine sites. One approach to the challenges presented by the changing business environment is to expand the system envelope around comminution to ensure that comminution, in its widest sense, helps to meet the new realities. Background to the new drivers and constraints is provided and some of the appropriate responses are examined in relation to the impact on the total system.

The classic description of Project Finance as "the reliance by lenders on the cashflow of a project, supported by the assets of the project with no recourse to the project sponsor's corporate balance sheet" has, like most other terms in the finance industry, evolved through recent usage. The area now under most scrutiny is the sharing of risks between parties either most able to take them or prepared to accept payment for them. Creativity in, and flexibility of financing structures have enabled project lending to continue under a dramatically different economic outlook. The diminishing competitiveness of the Australian producers in a global market place of uncertain commodity prices has discouraged the advancement of many large scale resource projects. The majority of new project financings has been designed to assist the relatively small company promote and develop its first projects. New trends- are emerging in four areas: sources of capital; borrowing structure; financing instruments (securitisation); and risk underpinning. As project financing becomes more widely used, the range of interested financiers grows. New initiatives contribute to its development and evolution with a view to increase effectiveness to the sponsor of any new venture.
