Introduction Core drilling of the bituminous sands of northern Alberta has been carried on by the Mines and Geology Branch, Department of Mines and Resources, under the supervision of the Director, W. B. Timm. This was part of the Dominion Government's wartime investigations, which included an agreement with Abasand Oils, Limited, for the study of commercial possibilities of obtaining oil from the bituminous sands. The drilling programme, commenced in 1942 by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, was continued in 1943 and subsequently by Boyles Bros. under contract with the Mines and Geology Branch. Several areas have been investigated and one of these, the Mildred-Ruth Lakes area, ' herein described, is of special importance in that it contains a sufficiently rich and large deposit of bituminous sands and bitumen beds to warrant consideration of commercial developments for the production of oil. The Steepbank Area, East Side of Athabaska River The Steepbank area, on the east side of Athabaska river in township 92, about twenty-two miles north of Fort McMurray, was selected for drilling in 1942 because previous investigations by Ells indicated it was one of considerable promise both from the standpoint of having reasonably rich bituminous sands under relatively light overburden and also having an excellent tailing disposal and plant site for large-scale operations in proximity to Athabaska river. The drilling done in 1942 and 1943 was largely exploratory, and, when it was found that the southerly part of township 92 had only low-grade material, closer drilling was done in 1944-45 in the richer, more northerly part.

OTML?s relationships with the communities of PNG?s Western Province are multifaceted. Communities have borne the brunt of the mine?s environmental impact, yet have benefited enormously from the development that the mine has brought. Importantly, the PNG economy is now the ultimate beneficiary of more than four-fifths of the dividends from the mine, the majority of which are held in trust for long-term sustainable development projects. The paper describes how OTML works with the Western Province communities to create a secure operating environment that recognizes the people?s aspirations for development and self-determination.

"Crack in corrosion (CIC) linepipe defects are hybrid defects not directly addressed by existing assessment methods. To investigate the collapse pressure of these defects, CIC defects were formed in 508 mm (20 in) diameter, 5.7 mm thick API X52 linepipe. These defects were 200mm long and varied in depth from 3.0 to 3.8 mm. The respective failure pressures decreased from 14.3 MPa for the plain pipe to 7.9 and 6.2 MPa respectively. A standard FAD method was applied to evaluate these defects as equivalent length and depth cracks, predicting the rupture pressure conservatively by 18% on average. However, when assessed as equivalent cracks with a reduced wall thickness corresponding to the corrosion depth, the predicted collapse pressures were more accurate, approximately 14% conservative on average.INTRODUCTIONPipelines are a safe and efficient method for transporting high volumes of oil and gas. However, aging pipelines may experience defects, such as cracks or corrosion. Present approaches include detection, assessment and repair of defects before they may become critical to the integrity of the line. There are different codes and standards for assessing pipeline defects, depending on the type of defect, with API 579 (API, 2000) being the most common code for the assessment of cracks in oil and gas pipelines . Corrosion is commonly assessed using RSTRENG (Kiefner & Vieth, 1989). Other methods such as the Finite Element method and the CPS method (Cronin & Pick, 2002) may be used for crack and corrosion, respectively.At present, there is no specific method or procedure for assessing crack in corrosion (CIC) defects, and as a consequence there is a need to provide an assessment and evaluation of the integrity of these defects in order to determine the requirements for defect repair or hydro line testing. Hence, the goal of this study was to provide guidance for the assessment of CIC defects for linepipe.CRACK IN CORROSION DEFECTS (CIC)Significant amounts of corrosion and cracking are not generally found together (Hosseini, 2010). However, a new hybrid defect including cracking within corrosion (CIC) has been identified in operating pipelines. In this case, cracking coincident with corrosion (schematic shown in Figure 1) provides the motivation for the current study."

Compared with traditional elutriation equipment, it adopts new technologies in removing impurities, operation, large-scale, process simplification, water-saving, remote control, etc. It optimizes the comprehensive beneficiation index, expands its application scope, reduces resource wastes and increases economic benefits.INTRODUCTIONMagnetite accounts for a comparatively great proportion in various iron resources. As it’s a kind of strong magnetic mineral, we must adopt the weak magnetic separation equipment in magnetic separation process to realize removing Si and lowering impurities. While it cannot do very well to use the common weak magnetic separation equipment in the final cleaning to remove Si and lower impurities. At present, the plants, adopting single magnetic separation process to realize cleaning and removing Si and lowering impurities, are in the minority. Most magnetite plants adopt the flotation separation process to remove Si, lower impurities and purify the concentrate. Though with stable indexes and high Fe recovery rate, the flotation process is very complicated, high-cost and with lots of environmental pollution. If adopting the weak magnetic separation equipment can realize removing Si, lowering impurities and the final cleaning, the magnetic separation process should be the primary choice."

"This is the third in a series of articles about the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO). The first article was an interview with Niall Weatherstone, Chairman of CRIRSCO (CIM Magazine, February 2008) the second described the background and goals of CRIRSCO (CIM Magazine, March/April 2008). In 2007, CRIRSCO was adopted as the Reserves and Resources Task Force of the International Council on Mining and Metals. This decision by ICMM has resulted in an increased level of funding for CRIRSCO and the ability to advance its objectives. In mid-October 2007, CRIRSCO members met in London England to discuss the status of each of the member countries’ reporting codes and the progress of various CRIRSCO projects. Update on national reporting codes Australia: The last update of the Australian JORC Code was in 2004. While there are ongoing discussions about issues that arise from the application of the latest version of the Code, there are no plans to update JORC in the near future. Canada: The Canadian Securities Administrators revised National Instrument 43-101 in December 2005. At the same time, the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum published updated Resource and Reserve Definitions that are incorporated by reference in NI 43-101. CIM is continuing work on developing Best Practice Guidelines to assist practitioners in the estimation of Mineral Resources and Reserves. South Africa: The South African Mineral Reserve Committee is currently awaiting an update of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange Limited Listing Rules, which will incorporate both SAMREC and SAMVAL (South African valuation guidelines). The official launch of both codes is expected in 2008. Europe: The Pan-European Reserves Reporting Committee expects to release a consultation draft in 2008. Emphasis is being placed on industrial minerals and aggregates, which constitute a very large industry in Europe. Chile: The Chilean Certification Code was approved in early 2008. As part of the Code, a National Commission is being established to screen and review reports on a random or specific basis. United States: The Society of Mining Engineers updated the SME Reporting Guidelines in 2007. The Securities and Exchange Commission has not accepted these more up-to-date definitions and guidelines. The SME committee will continue to discuss the incorporation of these Reporting Guidelines with SEC. SME has also established a class of membership, a Registered Member, which includes disciplinary measures for non-compliance with the SME guidelines."

INTRODUCTION THE property of Madsen Red Lake Gold Mines, Limited lies between Russet and Faulkenham lakes in Baird and Heyson townships, district of Patricia, Ontario. It is about six miles south west of the town of Red Lake, with which it is connected by an all-weather road. All orebodies found to date at the property are silicified lenticular bodies which lie within tuff beds. The ore bas a specific gravity of 2.95. It consists of mica and chlorite schist, silicified and containing a considerable amount of disseminated carbonate, and mineralized with pyrite, pyrrhotite, magnetite, arsenopyrite, and chalcopyrite. Of these, pyrite, in coarse to fine disseminated grains, is by far the most abundant. Pyrrhotite occurs in ?the gangue material as medium to fine disseminated grains. A very small amount of arsenopyrite, in small crystals, is associated with the pyrite, and small grains of chalcopyrite occur in both gangue and pyrite. Although some of the gold present in the ore is quite coarse, a good deal of it is extremely fine.

The Ontario Committee on Taxation is making a comprehensive study of taxation in the Province of Ontario, and in this connection has received representations concerning mining taxation from a number of interested parties. Some of the more important recommendations on mining taxation are reviewed in this article. "As rock engineering moves from continuum to more discontinuum approaches for modeling, the engineer must make decisions regarding the degree of complexity to simulate for a given application, balancing the level of structural detail within the rockmass model with computational cost and result accuracy. It is important to consider that model does not need to include all the existent fractures and that representative geometrical properties for a given rock mass volume can be defined including only major structural entities.Within this paper, the scale-dependency associated with the geometrical properties of fractured rock is investigated utilizing a Synthetic Rockmass (SRM) approach with a view to characterize such ground to aid in the design of geotechnical works. In terms of process, the concept of the Representative Elementary Volume (REV) is used to determine the equivalent structural properties of the rockmass in order to justify the applicability of far-field behaviour of such ground. A large size Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) measuring 60m x 60m x 60m has been generated using the structural data obtained from LiDAR scanning of the Brockville Tunnel, Ontario, Canada. A number of DFN samples of varying sizes are extracted from the master network, generated using MoFrac, in order to be used as a the basis of the structural analysis of the rockmass. Volumetric measurements for the density and the intensity of jointing are employed in order to approximate the geometrical REV for the networks.In this paper a complete methodology of how to generate a DFN from LiDAR data and its analysis in order to determine the size of a geometrical REV is demonstrated. For the specific rockmass found in the area of the Brockville Tunnel, a geometrical REV measuring 3.5m x 3.5m x 7m is established. The results are generally in good agreement with the in-situ observations."

"The concept of large single line grinding circuits provides a valid answer in project feasibility studies by reducing capital investment requirements compared to parallel lines for the same plant throughput rates. The benefits of this concept are reflected as well on the operational aspects, in terms of higher and greater process stability, and reduced operational costs mainly due to the associated lower maintenance expenditures. However, concerns exist in the minerals industry on whether large single line grinding could reduce the overall concentrator plant availability. The mechanical design and integrity, the mill and gearless mill drive integration, as well as assets management aspects of this type of equipment are the key to guarantee successful availability records. Together with an overview of the added value provided by large single line grinding circuits, this paper focuses on risk mitigation strategies during mill and gearless mill drive integration, as well as on the design of the equipment itself, for the key aspects which could put at risk the operations availability.INTRODUCTIONDespite a large long term demand for commodities, the mining industry has never faced complex challenges as it is doing today. Decreasing high-quality and accessible deposits, declining ore grades in existing mines, shortages of electrical energy (e.g. in Chile) and an aging workforce are the most significant among the megatrends affecting our industry. In addition to this, flat underlying commodity prices and high price volatility are currently posing strong requirements to miners when entering into the process of approving investments.Nowadays to get projects financially approved (optimizations, expansions, new plants), capital expenditure has to be reduced, as observed up to 30% compared to the last decade, and at the same time the plant design has to be such to demonstrate that operating costs will also be significantly lower than in the past.When it comes to the concentrator plant, the concept of large single line grinding circuits provides a valid answer in project feasibility studies by significantly reducing the capital investment requirements compared to parallel lines for the same plant throughput rates. "Boliden Harjavalta Oy has a long tradition in the Finnish metal industry starting from the 1930's. The Smelter consists of copper and nickel flash smelting lines. Off-gases are captured in the acid plant to produce sulfur products. During the early years of production, the surrounding environment suffered from high SO2 and dust emissions. The first acid plant started in 1947, a few years after commissioning of the smelter. The flash smelting method was developed and commissioned in 1949. This created the basis for today’s environmentally sound metal production. Recent air emission reductions are related to treating lean ventilation and granulation gases. Emissions from the stacks are monitored with continuous measurement devices. SO2 and PM10 concentrations are also measured from the residential area and reported online in cooperation with Harjavalta community and other local industry.INTRODUCTIONProductionBoliden Harjavalta Oy smelts copper and nickel concentrates and refines copper in the western part of Finland. The copper concentrates come from external copper mines mainly in South America and Europe. Concentrates are unloaded at the Pori harbor and transported to Harjavalta by train from a distance of about 60 km. Boliden Harjavalta Oy has operations in Harjavalta and Pori. The smelter in Harjavalta produces copper anodes that are transported via railway to the copper refinery in Pori. The anodes are electro-refined into copper cathodes and by-products like Se, Ag, Au and Pt/Pd concentrate. In the Harjavalta smelter SO2 containing gases are delivered to a sulphuric acid plant where sulphuric acid and liquid sulphur dioxide are produced.Our nickel smelter smelts nickel concentrates on a tolling basis to produce nickel matte for customer needs. SO2 containing off-gases are delivered to the sulphuric acid plant for sulphur capture and modification into products.All our operations are certified according to the Quality, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety Standards ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. Boliden Harjavalta Oy was the first company in Finland operating in the metal and technology industry to be certified according to the Energy Management Standard EN 16001, currently this certification is done according to ISO 50001."

"Hydrocyclones are used in various industrial applications, including mineral processing and tailings management, to separate or classify solid particles and/or liquid droplets from multiphase feed. The fluid flow in a hydrocyclone (used in mineral processing) was investigated numerically and experimentally using particle-image velocimetry (PIV) and refractive index matching techniques. Two turbulence models were used in the calculations: the k–? model and the Reynolds stress model. Particle image velocimetry measurements were taken at various spatial locations along the cyclone. Computational results were validated globally using pressure and flow-rate readings at the boundaries, and locally by comparing the PIV velocity-vector maps and profiles.RÉSUMÉ On utilise les hydrocyclones dans diverses applications industrielles, dont la minéralurgie et la gestion des résidus, pour séparer les particules solides et/ou les gouttelettes liquides de l’alimentation polyphasée, ou pour les classifier. Une étude numérique et expérimentale sur l’écoulement des fluides dans un hydrocyclone (dont on se sert en minéralurgie) a été menée à l’aide des techniques de vélocimétrie par images de particules (PIV, de l’anglais particle image velocimetry) et d’appariement des indices de réfraction. Deux modèles de turbulence ont été utilisés dans ces calculs, à savoir le modèle de turbulence k–? et le modèle aux tensions de Reynolds (RSM, de l’anglais Reynolds stress model). La valeur de la PIV a été mesurée à diverses positions spatiales le long du cyclone. "Mine hoisting machinery, of which wire rope is an essential part, is developing, in Canada as well as in other parts of the North American continent, into highly sophisticated equipment. Heavier payloads are now required to be raised from steadily increasing depths at higher rates of speed and production. These hoisting conditions have, of necessity, brought about a major change in the production of steel roping wires and the wire ropes manufactured from them.Operators and designers of hoisting equipment are requesting a very much more efficient ratio of strength to weight in hoisting ropes, so that heavier loads may be raised from greater depths by ropes which will provide a predeterminable life span on which the operator may depend.The cost of wire rope to the operator is very low indeed, usually less than $0.01 per ton of payload, but the cost of unexpected shutdown periods, due to rope maintenance or change, can be extremely high -particularly in operations where a continuously high rate of production is an absolute necessity. Mine hoist ropes with a higher strength to weight ratio are now being made and used in some areas of Canadian mining, and a general understanding of the performance we may expect from them is required."

Recycling of spent hydrotreating catalysts (HTC) can potentially contribute towards the sustainable extraction of metal values. Treating such materials by hydrometallurgical methods to separate metals from the leach liquor of either acid/alkali media is a major step. In the present study, separation of molybdenum from HCl leach liquor of spent NiMo type HTC has been investigated by applying solvent extraction using Cyanex-923. For this, the chloride solution containing 973 mg/L Mo, 254 mg/L Ni and 1634 mg/L Al was taken as the aqueous feed. The parameters including contact time, concentration of the extractant, acid and chloride, and phase ratio were varied to investigate their effect on the extraction efficiency. The McCabe-Thiele plot suggests that > 99% Mo-loading using a 2-stage extraction process. From the molybdenum depleted solution, nickel was selectively extracted by Cyanex-301 leaving Al in the raffinate.

"An innovative concept is proposed whereby the operating power for haul trucks in certain areas of an underground mine are reduced in order to lower ventilation costs. Airflow that must be provided for diesel-powered equipment in most jurisdictions are regulated based on engine peak power capability and engine emissions, both of which can be lowered by artificially reducing the capacity of the engine through the engine control unit. Advances in asset tracking and ventilation on demand enable this methodology and this study demonstrates that it could represent significant value for mine operators. An examination of haul truck duty cycle indicates that de-rating of engine operating power based on the truck’s location in the mine can enable a step change in ventilation rates, often with no material impact on working conditions. Methods for implementation and estimate of cost savings will be defined.INTRODUCTION Ventilation of underground workings remains a significant operating cost burden for modern mine operators. In particular, ventilation rates for underground diesel mining equipment are often defined by local regulatory bodies and are assumed to present minimal opportunity for optimization or savings, at least until battery propulsion systems can be adopted. Commonly, the quantity of air flow required is defined by the peak rated engine output power of diesel equipment. For example, Ontario Regulation 854 SS 183.1 (3) states that “The flow of air must be at least 0.06 cubic metres per second for each kilowatt of power of the diesel-powered equipment operating in the workplace”. Jurisdictions that define air flow using the prescribed CANMET or MSHA ratings use peak engine emissions to calculate air flow required for dilution ventilation. These approaches are similar in that the maximum power capability of a vehicle’s engine is used to define the ventilation rate in all areas where it travels, regardless of what power output is actually used in any of those areas. Examination of the duty cycle of a typical underground haul truck identifies a large variance in the power output of the vehicle depending on its location in the mine and the activities undertaken at these locations. For example, travel on a mining sub-level requires a fraction of the truck’s peak power due to the minimal grade and significantly reduced travel speed. So if we can reliably reduce the peak engine power capacity and engine emissions in areas where peak power is not required, we can logically cut the ventilation rates for those areas."

"Cyclone separators of different design are being used in increasing numbers in the coal industry of today. One recent addition, the Compound Water Cyclone, is finding application in the North American and Australian coal fields for the beneficiation of coking coals and for the reduction of sulphur and ash in steam coals. In this paper, the combination of specific-gravity separation, thickening, classification and water recovery are discussed. All of these operations can now be accomplished by means of cyclones that are effectively combined in circuits of compact design. In the layout of such integrated plants, three main sections are distinguished, namely: a Main Section for cleaning the plus-28-mesh fractions; an Effluent-Beneficiation Section for treating the minus-28-mesh fractions; and a Water-Recovery Section, where the wash water is reconditioned, and the fine solids are removed in a semi-solid state as slugs or pellets. Depending on the nature of the coal and the specifications of the purchaser, water-cyclone circuits can be flexibly combined with HM Cyclones and froth flotation, as well as with ancillary equipment for dewatering and drying."

"Waste rock is one of the most abundant materials at mine sites and must be properly characterized and managed to limit acid rock drainage and other harmful byproducts. An experimental waste rock pile—part of the test piles research program—located at the Diavik diamond mine (Northwest Territories, Canada) was deconstructed and sampled to study the spatial variability of material properties. Bulk samples were classified based on the amount of material finer than 4.75 mm. Hydraulic properties of each sample were estimated and particle size distribution analysis was completed. These datasets and classification methods might be used to improve the understanding of hydraulic and geochemical behaviour of the material and to study waste rock at other sites. ¦ KEYWORDS Acid rock drainage (ARD), Material classification, Particle size distribution (PSD), Waste rock RÉSUMÉ Les stériles font partie des matériaux les plus abondants sur les sites miniers et, en tant que tels, doivent être correctement caractérisés et gérés afin de limiter le drainage rocheux acide (DRA) et la pré¬sence d’autres sous-produits nocifs. Dans le cadre du programme Test Piles Research Program, un amas de roches stériles expérimental situé à la mine de diamant Diavik (Territoires du Nord-Ouest, Canada) a été décomposé et mis à l’essai afin d’étudier la variabilité spatiale des propriétés des matériaux. Les échan¬tillons en vrac ont été classés en fonction de la quantité de matériaux plus fins que 4,75 mm. Les propriétés hydrauliques de chaque échantillon ont été estimées et l’analyse de la composition granulométrique effectuée. The large volume of material and the large size of particles make it difficult to collect representative samples. Sampling techniques are often dis-ruptive to mining operations because they alter the structure of the waste rock pile or interfere with mine traffic. The convention at most mine sites to collect little to no information on waste rock material means that models and predictions of how waste material will behave and interact with the surrounding environment are based on general information that might not be site specific. This could lead to environmental damage or higher costs if environmental effects are underestimated during the construction of waste rock structures."

This paper reviews the history of modern iron-control processes in hydrometallurgy. Attention is paid to processes developed in the electrolytic zinc industry for removal of iron from zinc sulfate leach liquors and the problems faced by the industry in the safe disposal of the iron residues produced by these processes. Past lessons learned are projected onto current efforts to develop hydrometallurgical processes for treatment of copper sulfide concentrates. It is argued that any attempt to create a \u201chydrometallurgical copper smelter\u201d will fail, unless methods are developed that can recover iron in a form that can be directly used by the steel or pigment industries.

"Attempts have been made to produce hardened structures of a pseudomorphic type in various carbon and alloy steels. In order to obtain martensite with a fine distribution of cementite, an initial structure of fine lamellar or nodular pearlite is required; this may be obtained by conventional means. This is followed by partial austenitization and quenching.Two methods have been tried to induce partial austenitization:(a) A resistance (direct current) heating method involving rapid entry into the austenite field.(b) A new method, described as the ""threshold"" technique, involving homogenization of temperature just below A 1, followed by entry into the austenite field; two furnaces are required.The resulting structures have been examined for microstructures, hardness, tensile, and impact values. The tensile properties are comparable with those obtainable by conventional treatment methods. Impact values are disappointing, but this is explainable from the nature of the manifold changes occurring."

THE first application of the cementation process took place in the year 1864, according to H. Standish Ball, when a break in the brickwork lining at a depth of 270', in one of the Rhine Preussen pits near Homburg, was sealed by running in milk of cement from the surface by means of a small hand pump. At about the same time Monsieur Portier adopted the method in France for repairing breaks in shaft lining. Figure 1 is descriptive of the Portier system and is of interest when compared with modern practice. During the next thirty years numerous attempts were made to improve the process; the general method used in sinking being to put clown bore holes outside the perimeter of the shaft for the purposes of injection. The cementation process was first recognized as an important as-set to mining in 1896 when Monsieur A. Francois developed his method of boring and injecting inside the shaft below the permanent water level.
