Introduction From the earliest times it has been an inherent trait of man to build or create something for his own use or convenience. The need of some form of shelter other than that of the caves led him to bind together stones and other materials to form walls for his abode. Moistened clay which hardened upon drying was no doubt first employed. The Assyrians and Babylonians appear to have employed it or the bitumen found in their country. The early Egyptians and Greeks used some form of lime in their construction work. In addition to these shelters, other structures received attention, and, long before the Roman Empire was established, the Carthaginians made use of a natural cement as binding material. Portions of an aqueduct, seventy miles long, in Northern Africa, built in those early days, are still in use. The Etruscans were the first people in Italy to employ a mortar in their buildings. The Romans, learning the art from the Etruscans, improved the mortar by using a mixture of lime and volcanic ash, called 'puzzolan', and built not only roads but those famous structures, the ruins of many of which exist to this day. The Pantheon at Rome, built by Hadrian about 120 A.D., is perhaps the finest example of the early use of cement in building construction. With the decline of the Roman Empire, the art of making cement seems to have been lost, and for centuries the builders of Europe used only lime mortar. Pure limestones were selected for making the lime and great care was taken in the preparation of the mortar, the supply for one year being made the previous season and left to thoroughly slake or 'ripen' in pits covered with earth. The mortar thus produced gave excellent service above ground or where it was exposed to the hardening action of the air, but would not harden under water.

"Aluminium A206 (AlCu4) is one of the strongest aluminium casting alloys with tensile properties approaching those of ferritic ductile iron. If the specification on the silicon content (< 0.05%) is easy to achieve during alloy ingot production, it is not the case in a foundry, where returns are used which are not perfectly cleaned from the silicate containing molding sand (Olivine). In alloy A206, the Si content is controlled in order to avoid the formation of a low melting point intermetallic phase (such as phase Q Al5Cu2Si6Mg2); these phases will melt during the solutionizing heat treatment to which alloy A206 must be subjected to develop its outstanding mechanical properties. This incipient melting may deteriorate the mechanical properties of Alloy A206 if the solutionizing treatment is applied at the standard temperature of 530°C.In the present study, a lower temperature solutionizing (520°C) was applied to a high Si content 206 alloy in order to reduce or eliminate the possible incipient melting. This was carried out on a complex shape industrial casting weighing 14 kg (31 lb) and 560x410x250 mm (22x16x10”) in size poured in aluminum 206 with a high silicon content (0.22% vs 0.05% max for alloy A206). Twenty ASTM E8 subsize tensile specimens were excised from two locations in the casting in order to compare the tensile properties for the two solutionizing temperature used (530 and 520°C). Optical and SEM microscopy allowed to investigate the causes of the differences in the properties observed between the 2 zones of the casting studied for 3 different heat treatments. INTRODUCTIONIn spite of their “textbook” outstanding mechanical properties (Up to twice the strength and elongation of the widely used A356 alloy), aluminum-copper alloys of the 2xx series are seldom used because of their propensity for hot tearing [Li, 2011], the segregation of copper [Cho, 2003], and their sensitivity to stress corrosion cracking [Jean, 2009, p. 113)]. Also, because of their wide freezing range and high thermal conductivity, a wide mushy zone makes feeding difficult, unless strong temperature gradients are created by liberal use of chills and risers in the critical zones of the part. Because they are prone to hot tearing, grain refining of Al-Cu alloys is particularly important, titanium playing a major role in the process [Sigworth, 2003]; grain refining has also been shown to be beneficial to fatigue strength [Jean, 2009, p. 103]. The practical basis of foundry practices pertaining to these alloys is outlined in an AFS webinar [Weiss, 2014]."

Environmental monitoring plays a key role in coal mine safety. In recent years, significant advances have been made in the development of systems suitable for monitoring air in underground coal mines. Because of intensive mining and large capital outlay, the need for higher productivity consistent with safety is well recognized and it appears that environmental monitoring may help achieve this objective. This paper reviews the state-of- the-art in the monitoring technology with particular reference to hazardous gas detection in underground coal mines. The preliminary results obtained from ongoing studies, with regard to continuous monitoring of methane and carbon monoxide in mine air in some of the operations in Western Canada, are discussed. The inadequacies of the methods using spot samples are examined and the need to supplement the present practice with continuous monitoring systems is emphasized.

On the other hand, we recognize that short-term issues are important and, as we are reading and hearing, many of the right short-term solutions continue to elude our politicians, our policy makers, and even some of those with knowledge and authority in the energy field.A year ago, if you asked people how they would go about conserving energy, they would probably have said turn out the lights. They would probably say the same thing today, but they might also include other things such as driving the automobile more slowly or putting more insulation in the attic. "Concurrent with the continuing demise of many Canadian mining towns is the rise of a new method of providing remote mine sites with a workforce. This is the Long Distance Commute (LDC) which uses commuter labour and requires no permanent settlements to support the mine operation. It provides a flexible and cost effective method of operation to the industry and relieves both governments and industry of the expense of building and maintaining mining towns. However, little attention has been paid to the effect on workers or their families of the LDC work schedule whereby workers spend a fixed number of days at the site followed by a fixed number of days at home. Off-shore oil rig experience would indicate that negative social impacts may be expected. Research leading to an understanding of the problems involved seems to be indicated. One innovative suggestion has been to use already established but dying mining towns as workforce pick-up points for new LDC operations further north.BackgroundUntil recently, mine towns were considered as a necessary component of mine development. This was a natural symbiosis resulting from the need to provide workforce accommodation close to isolated mine sites. The early mine communities in Canada were often just a huddle of shacks around a head frame. Gradually mining companies began to provide housing which varied from basic duplexes and quads in grid pattern layout to professionally planned and designed towns, either model company towns or the more recent suburbs-in-the-bush, the so-called ""instant towns"" of the postWorld War II era of resource development. The improvement in accommodation reflected the need to attract a stable workforce as mine operations became more sophisticated. City amenities were expected and offered in these mine towns as a way of encouraging a permanent community of mining families. Indeed in towns like Manitouwdage, Schefferville, and others, it was not unusual to find a significant percentage of two- and three-generation families apparently providing the permanent mining communities so desired by mine operators."

Ground support is a significant component of underground mining costs. The rehabilitation of failed support, however, is often much more expensive than the initial installation. This paper investigates whether the right type and length of support can be designed correctly the first time, through forward modelling of the support and the mining process. Back analyses demonstrate how high-quality instrumentation and monitoring can help with the estimation of the post-peak (post-failure) rock mass parameters required for a comprehensive analysis. A hybrid modelling approach combines a three-dimensional mine-wide boundary element model with a non-linear finite element model to allow for the failure process in the rock mass. The back analyses demonstrate that, for the case study site, the post-peak Generalized Hoek-Brown value of mr must be reduced significantly in order to properly simulate displacements observed in instrumentation data. High-quality instrumentation data is the key to post-peak rock mass parameter calibration. The procedures outlined in the paper highlight the need for a new hybrid numerical modelling package that can use the influence of three-dimensional mining-induced stresses to predict displacements in, and potential failure of, rock masses surrounding mining infrastructure in order to radically alter strategic and tactical mine design.

Introduction The development of the method for recovering zinc from lead blast-furnace slags at Trail is interesting and important in the history of both lead and zinc metallurgy. Many efforts have been made in the past, particularly in Germany, to make economic recovery of zinc from slag. The Pape process on Oker slags was successful and is being worked at the present time. More recently the Waelz process has come to the fore. One effort at Cockle Creek, Australia is of special interest in view of subsequent developments. This was re-ported in detail by Guy Courtney in 1920(1). It deserves mention as it shows how, as in many other instances in the metallurgy of lead and zinc, important pioneering work has been done in Australia. These experiments, started over 25 years ago, comprised reduction with coke, powdered coal, and eletrothermically in carbon-lined furnaces. The so-called slag eye furnace, which volatilised the metals from a blast furnace running with a hot top, was also investigated.

Underground mining in Sweden is today characterized by mechanization and automation, owing to the rising cost of labour. Drilling in drifts and tunnels is still essentially done with jackleg drills, but rigs wh1ch make it possible for one man to operate two or more drills are now frequently used. Large jumbos for longhole drilling, with two drills operated by one man, are used, especially in sub-level caving. A special drill-rig for drilling through overburden and blasting without removing the overburden has been successfully used in canals and also in ports, where blasting is per-formed under water. The increased use of mining methods based upon long blastholes is a result of the development of equipment for drilling long straight holes. The most common mining method in Sweden is sub-level caving. Extensive research, with model tests, has been carried out in order to determine suit-able dimensions of drifts, sub-levels and drilling patterns. The results have been tried in practice and have given increased yield and less waste rock in hoisted ore.

Recently constructed circuits have included multiple stages of columns in a variety of applications, from roughing to cleaning. The Miduk copper concentrator (in south-eastern Iran) is one of the unique mineral processing plants which use column flotation cells as rougher. As the bulk of final concentrate is produced by rougher columns, optimized metallurgical performance of these cells is crucial. This paper will present the study and optimization of, a froth washing system of columns. For this purpose, the cross-sectional area of orifices was increased and their orientation altered. Concentrate assay for copper and silica, in addition to bias rate were found to be the assessment criteria. Modification of the wash water system resulted in increasing the purity of rougher and final concentrate. Negative bias and short-circuiting of wash water into the concentrate launder were the main causes of improper froth zone washing in the former system.

"Equity Silver Mines Limited, Canada&apos;s largest silver mine, has designed, built and operated a leach plant to reduce the levels of antimony and arsenic in its silver-gold-copper flotation concentrate. The orebody contained deleterious antimony and arsenic minerals in such proportions that the economic long-term sales contracts necessary to obtain project financing could not be procured. Construction of the leach plant therefore allowed development of the mine to proceed. Although the plant took some time to reach design throughput and product specifications, due to the complex and unique nature of the operation, these goals were successfully met and surpassed. This paper describes the physical plant and/or process technology modifications made to mold the main processes-concentrate leaching and filtering, autoclaving and filtration of by-products, and crystallization of salt cake-into an effective, economic operation.IntroductionEquity Silver Mines Limited, a member of the Placer Development Group, owns and operates an open-pit silver mine and related facilities located 37 kilometres southeast of Houston in north-central British Columbia. The mine occupies a 44 I-hectare (1089 acre) site at an elevation of 1300 metres (4265 feet) on the Nechako Plateau. Producing a copper concentrate containing high values of silver and gold, it is the largest silver mine in Canada and one of the largest in the western world. Equity stresses open communications, positive motivation, and production with safety, and achieved the best mine safety record in western Canada in 1984."

"Although the centennial of the Peirce-Smith (PS) converting process has recently been celebrated, the technology has essentially not changed much since its inception. PS converting is used extensively in the Cu, Ni and PGM industry to remove iron and sulphur from a molten matte phase. A typical PS converting process would use low pressure air supplied by a blower to bubble air through the molten bath. This bubbling injection regime is inherently inefficient from a process and energy consideration. In the late 70’s and early 80’s, Brimacombe and co-workers demonstrated at both laboratory and plant scales that sonic injection (jetting regime) into copper or nickel converters could reduce or eliminate the above hindrances characteristic of PS converting. Since then, in spite of these successes, very little industrial applications have made headway in the converting process of non-ferrous metal mattes on a commercial scale. As part of its operational improvement and energy reduction program (process efficiency), Lonmin Platinum decided to conduct a full scale industrial evaluation of sonic injection using air only to establish if punchless, high efficiency sonic injection was feasible in its small 3.05 × 4.57 m converters (10’ × 15’). A plant trial was run for four weeks in one of its three converters. This paper discusses the plant demonstration with a focus on the experience acquired by Lonmin together with the key learnings from the trials. Reference will also be made to the commercial aspects of a full scale implementation of sonic injection in all three converters in the smelter. While effective in treating refractory sulfide ores, pressure oxidation leaves carbonaceous matter unscathed and able to adsorb gold from cyanide solutions. Barrick Goldstrike&apos;s strategy to mitigate this problem is to minimize contact between dissolved gold and native carbon in advance of the carbon-in-leach (CIL) process. Measures currently in use include limiting carbonaceous matter in the plant feed by meticulous blending of ore, controlling the degree of oxidation in the autoclaves and blinding native carbon surfaces with lauryl sulfate. The presence of residual cyanide and thiocyanate in the process water remains to be a cause of premature gold dissolution and loss of gold by adsorption on carbonaceous matter. This cyanide is introduced by water that is recycled from the tailing pond. Of several treatment options considered, oxidation by peroxymonosulfuric acid, also known as Caro&apos;s acid, is deemed to be the most effective. Laboratory and pilot plant tests show that Caro&apos;s acid can oxidize free cyanide, weak¬acid-dissociable (WAD) cyanide and thiocyanate, resulting in significant improvements in gold recovery downstream. The process requires Caro&apos;s acid at 125 % of the stoichiometric requirement and pH in the range of 9.5 to 10 to accomplish the desired destruction in about twenty minutes. A cyanide destruction plant is currently being designed and construction should be completed by the end of 2005.

Introduction In the contact process for ?the manufacture of sulphuric acid, sulphur dioxide gas - produced by the burning of sulphur or of sulphur-bearing ores, or as a by-product in the treatment of sulphide ores - is made to combine with the oxygen of the air to form sulphur trioxide, which then only requires the addition of water to form sulphuric acid. The substance, as for example platinum, causing this combination is usually referred to as a catalyst, a convenient term, in the definition and explanation of which many pages have been written. Catalysis is now a comparatively common means of effecting chemical combination, but if the question were raised here tonight as to what actually goes on when this apparently innocent third party unites the parties of the first and second . part, without itself being altered in any way, I am afraid even our most learned members would have to confess their inability to entirely explain the phenomenon; for although the subject is under investigation, there is still much to learn. The contact process, however, is one of the outstanding achievements in chemical engineering. ? From the standpoint of the difficulties involved and the time absorbed in their solution, it probably stands alone in the field of technical chemistry. In fact, the manufacture of sulphuric acid has, from the earliest days, been surrounded with problems which have interested the ablest chemists. The Chamber System Although this paper has particularly to deal with the contact process, it may not be amiss to refer briefly to the chamber system, which was, and still is, a most important factor in the sulphuric acid industry.

Correct selection of forging parameters is very important to produce sound superalloy parts. In this investigation nickel-iron base superalloy IN901 successfully forged and seal spacer, which is a part of airplane with about 11 kg weight has been produced. Forging has been performed on the basis of hot compression results, which show deformation above 1100°C associated with dynamic recrystallization (DRX) which can increase the workability of material. On the other hand annealing at 1100°C decreases the flow stress during hot compression, and then increases the material formability. Then billets annealed at 1100°C in electrical furnace for 24 hours and reheated again to 1100°C before forging. Initial square cross section billet with 128mm side and 202mm length forged immediately after reheating by 80MN mechanical press. Specimens forged in five steps: upsetting, three steps molding and finishing. Preformed and molded specimens reheated in electrical furnace before later step of forming. Finally specimens trimmed by 1 OMn mechanical press and hot set by hydraulic press and then cooled in air to room temperature. Results show that reheating temperatures has been selected correctly because there isn&apos;t any surface crack and die cavities filled completely by forging material. Material flow has been carried out properly and there isn&apos;t any defect in critical points especially in extradoses and intradoses. Microstructural examinations show that grain boundaries contain Ti-rich globular particles that formed during cooling.

"More than a dozen AEM systems are currently being used in the routine exploration for massive sulphides. The systems differ from one another in minor respects, but fall into four main categories: rigid-coupled in-phase/quadrature systems; towed-bird, single-component systems; differential systems; and passive systems.Although field tests are important in demonstrating the performance characteristics of the AEM/airframe assembly (noise-levels, coupling effects, etc.), more meaningful evaluations can be made through physical or computer modelling. The latter approach has been used to compare the response of twelve AEM systems to both vertical and horizontal sheets, simulating a large orebody and a con-ductive overburden respectively. The effects of height changes are also studied.The results demonstrate that each AEM system has its own particular advantages and disadvantages. The relative importance of these is a matter for the geophysicist to judge, on the basis of specific geological and environ-mental information. Data currently available on AEM systems are adequate to permit an objective evaluation of the systems for a particular exploration program."

Stone that may be applied to purposes of construction is available in nearly all the inhabited parts of Canada, the most important exception being the prairie region, but, even here, the deficiency is overcome in many parts by a wealth of glacial field-stones. In many parts of the country, also, the accessible stone is of a quality so poor that brick is more generally used. There is a great difference, however, between stone that &apos;may be used&apos; and stone suitable for buildings of a monumental type or even for &apos;trimmings&apos; on the better class of dwelling in the cities and towns. It is in the latter sense that the expression &apos;building stone&apos; is commonly used. Thus restricted the term includes varieties of sandstone, limestone, and granite, using the latter word in the custom of the quarryman, not only for the true granite of the geologist but for many other igneous rocks as well. Building stone of high quality grades imperceptibly into stone suitable for monuments, particularly in the case of the granites. The present review will deal with building and monumental stone in this restricted sense and will omit marble, although that material has been used to some extent for building. For instance, the Great West block in Winnipeg is built of marble from British Columbia.

"Geochemical stream-sediment reconnaissance can be a useful exploration tool from the point of view of rapidly and cheaply evaluating the mineral potential of an area. This is particularly true of rugged and mountainous areas such as are found in Gaspé. For the past two years, SOQUEM has been carrying out such surveys over favorable geological regions in the Appalachians of northern New Brunswick and Gaspe. To date, about 4,000 square miles of terrain has been systematically covered by reconnaissance geochemistry. Jeeps have been used as a means of transportation in the easily accessible areas and a helicopter equipped with a winch has been used to lower crews into the more difficult-to-reach regions. Such surveys have been successful in finding metallic mineralization which otherwise might not have been detected.Electronic computation of analytical information has been used to construct regional metal maps, rolling mean maps and residual metal maps. These maps have helped in evaluating anomalies, in relating the regional geo-chemistry to the regional geology and in comparing the distribution patterns of metals. To date, some 30,000 stream-sediment samples have been collected from the Gaspe region and analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn and Mn. These analyses are being subjected to computer analysis."
