RICE LAKE-BERESFORD LAKE area, situated 100 miles northeast of Winnipeg (Figure 1), is Manitoba's foremost gold mining district, although it is exceeded in gold production in the Province by the Flin Flon base-metal mining district. At present, the area is producing at the rate of about one and three-quarter million dollars annually, almost entirely from the San Antonio and Gunnar mines. The total production to date is about $14,000,000. Of this total, over $7,000,000 has come from the San Antonio mine, over $2,000,000 from the Gunnar mine, about $4,000,000 from the Central Manitoba mine, and the balance from several smaller properties. The writer has led Geological Survey parties in the area for the past four summers. The present paper gives a summary of the results of this work and also includes the findings of C. S. Lord, who was in charge of a party for one year. Much valuable information was obtained from earlier published reports on the area and from officials of mining companies, to whom the writer is indebted for their kindly co-operation. It is impossible in this short paper to give proper credit to the earlier workers or to discuss certain points o disagreement between their conclusions and those presented here. Hydraulic fracturing and hydraulic shearing techniques are essential for the development of unconventional oil & gas and geothermal resources. Such techniques will also play a key role in the development of CO2 sequestration, and management of high stresses encountered with deep mining. However, the optimal design of hydraulic injections is often limited by continuum treatments of the rock mass without consideration of the influence of the natural fractures present. These may interact with the hydraulic fracture to promote offsets or arrest, or may cause the natural fractures to undergo shear and dilation. Given the limited access to the rock afforded by deep boreholes common to oil & gas and geothermal projects, advanced numerical modeling is critical for understanding key mechanisms and interactions. In this work, we first present a coupled hydromechanical distinct-element model focusing on the propagation of a hydraulic fracture. Normal and shear displacements arising from the generated hydraulic fractures are subsequently integrated into a fracture flow model for detailed analysis of specific flow behaviour and fracture permeability. For this, a scanned 3-D profile of a natural fracture is used to correlate surface roughness to dilation as a function of shearing. Fracture flow is computed at different time steps corresponding to different fracture propagation states and geometries. Modeling results indicate that the opening of a tensile hydraulic fracture is accompanied by millimetre-scale shear displacements associated with slip and wedging between adjacent blocks. This may leads to a mismatch between the upper and lower walls of the fracture if asperities are irregular and strong enough. However, fluid-induced tensile fractures have low Joint Roughness Coefficients (JRC), and associated millimetre-scale shear displacements are too small to ensure a significant offset of asperities that prevent a fully-elastic closure when the hydraulic fracture is depressurized. Injection of proppant is thus critical to keeping hydraulic fracture apertures open. Future work is planned that will see the models calibrated against field data including microseismic event locations, magnitudes and source mechanisms, tiltmeter deformations, stress change, and pore pressures.

The coal mining area in Northern Shaanxi, China, has been taken as the study area, and the damage mechanism of the ecological environment is discussed on the basis of analyzing the characteristics of natural eco-environment and resource development in this area. Mining subsidence is taken as an example, and by using the Gray Correlation Analysis method, the key impact factors have been selected. An assessment model with fuzzy comprehensive evaluation has been constructed, and 12 coal mines have been quantitatively assessed. This paper also constructs an ecosystem health assessment method and index system in the coal mine area on the basis of ecosystem health theory, and assesses the ecosystem health status in the Shenfu coal mining area from 2000?2006. The research results are expected to help the eco-environment protection process in the designated coal mining area.

"Optimizing hydraulic fracture injection parameters in order to maximize hydrocarbon extraction and to avoid extensive borehole spalling is still an open issue. In this paper, the Differential Stress Induced Damage (DSID) model is employed to simulate the anisotropic damage distribution around pressurized boreholes drilled in fractured shale. The loading path is purely mechanical: excavation and fluid injection are simulated by stress relaxation followed by pressurization. We investigate the effect of pre-existing fracture orientation, in-situ stress and injection pressure on the propagation of anisotropic damage during pressurization. Finite Element results indicate that (1) damage initiates and develops when the ratio of two in-situ stress component deviates from 1, and the magnitude of damage is proportional to this stress deviation; (2) For a given in-situ stress field, damage initiates for a certain threshold of injection pressure, and the damage zone extends as the injection pressure increases; (3) A pre-existing fracture only affects the damage zone locally; the orientation of that fracture does not affect the damaged zone, which is controlled by in situ stress and injection pressure.INTRODUCTIONHydraulic fracturing is used to increase shale permeability and to enhance hydrocarbon extraction. In order to maximize the extraction ratio and to avoid wellbore spalling and clogging during fluid injection, the parameters related to injection for each particular site need to be optimized. Therefore, it is necessary to clearly understand how shale responses upon excavation and pressurization.It is well known that breakouts grow in the direction of minimum compression and that plastic deformation around wellbores tends to arrest breakouts (Zoback et al., 1985). Laboratory acoustic emission tests revealed that fractures propagate along the direction of maximum compression stress, and fractures (breakouts) are surrounded by the Excavation Damaged Zone (EDZ), in which rock properties are weakened by the presence of micro cracks (Eberhardt et al., 1999; Martino et al., 2004). The anisotropy from orientated foliations and cracks may influence the development and propagation of fractures and breakouts (Everitt et al., 2004). Sonic televiewer logs proved that during hydraulic fracturing, fluid injection further alters the stress distribution (Evans et al., 2005). Shale natural fabric strongly affects the evolution of the EDZ around boreholes."

"This document highlights some of the topical problems associated with the design and support of deep tabular excavations in hard rock. The displacement discontinuity boundary element method has been used for at least five decades to analyse stress and displacement distributions around narrow width excavations with complex plan outlines. The assumption is made in most cases that the rock mass surrounding the excavation is perfectly elastic. Although this approach works well to minimise stress concentrations in practice, it has limitations as important parameters, such as the effect of mining rate, cannot be investigated. Recently, a limit equilibrium model has been studied as a means to enhance standard layout design exercises by including an interactive on-reef damage model. This approach can include explicit energy release dissipation computations. A second problem faced by engineers in the mining industry is the evaluation of pillar and remnant stress. The paper highlights two aspects namely the effect of element size in displacement discontinuity modeling on pillar stress and the difficulty to estimate the effect of total closure on the regeneration of stress in old mining areas. Regarding the support of the tabular excavations, current efforts are focussed on providing improved aerial coverage using hangingwall bolting and temporary nets. An unresolved issue is the installation of permanent mesh in low stoping width areas. INTRODUCTIONSince 1886, more than 50 000 tons of gold has been mined in the Witwatersrand Basin of South Africa (Hartnady, 2009). The nearby platinum mines also saw significant growth in recent years and more than 80% of the world’s platinum group metal reserves are contained in the Bushveld Complex of South Africa (Nell, 2004). Apart from the economic aspects, the mines served as an outstanding rock engineering “laboratory” for many decades owing to the deep, tabular nature of the excavations. The period from 1960 to 1980 was especially lucrative in terms of research and world-renowned researchers investigated the support and rockburst problems (e.g. see Cook et al., 1966; Salamon, 1968; Bienawski, 1973; Wagner, 1984). Many of the rock-related problems nevertheless persist up to the present day and this paper explores some of these problems and recent progress. The production of gold declined substantially in recent years (Hartnady, 2009) and well-directed rock engineering research can play a meaningful role to slow this trend. The objective of the document is to highlight critical areas requiring additional research and not to discuss the topics in detail. The reader is referred to the many references for additional information. The paper only focuses on three areas namely numerical modelling, pillar stress estimation and aerial support. Although these are diverse topics, it is included in one paper to illustrate the many unsolved and practical problems associated with deep tabular excavations."

North American Palladium is the owner/operator of the Lac des Iles mine located 115 km north of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The mine has produced an average of 65,000 ounces of palladium since 1994. Lac des Iles is currently undergoing the first phase of a major expansion that will increase ore production from 2,400 tons per day to 15,000 tons per day. A future expansion is being contemplated for 30,000 tons per day. The current expansion will increase palladium output to 250,000 ounces per year. The mine plan for the ultimate pit results in an excavation 1 km long by 800 m wide and over 450 m deep. This makes the ultimate pit at Lac des Iles one of the ten deepest open pits in the world, and the largest in Canada. This paper outlines the geotechnical data collection and design methodology for the ultimate open pit at Lac des Iles.

In the metal casting industry an improvement of component quality mainly depends on better control over the production parameters. Thus, thermal analysis cooling curve of the alloy is used for process control in aluminum casting industry. Cooling rates of the alloy during solidification process affect microstructure, grain size, eutectic silicon morphology, and dendrite arm spacing (DAS). In this research, effect of cooling rate on the microstructure and solidification parameters of 319 aluminum alloy that is a widely used alloy in automotive industry, has been investigated by means of thermal analysis. Seven different cooling rates have been obtained by using CO2-bonded silica sand molds with two different wall thicknesses, hot-work tool steel molds (H13) with and without coating, thin-wall steel molds with different coatings. In each case, cooling curve and first derivative cooling curve have been plotted by use of very accurate thermal analysis equipment. Effect of different cooling rates on solidification parameters e.g. Nucleation temperature (TN,a), nucleation undercooling (ATN,a), recalescence temperature (TR,a), solidification range (AT,s), and total solidification time (t 0 have been studied in the liquidus region. Microstructural evaluation has been carried out and DAS were measured in all solidification conditions. A numerical equation was proposed to predict cooling rates via measuring DAS in 319 aluminum alloy. Nucleation process and the effect of cooling rate have been interpreted by using thermal analysis cooling curves and microstructural study.

As depths to the ore bodies keep increasing around the globe, the problem how to deal with the increasing temperature of undisturbed rock mass becomes very important. In extreme cases the rock temperature at the bottom of the mine could raise up to 80 °C. In deep mines, geothermal heat is considered as the primary heat load contributor, which accounts for 50?90% of the total heat load depending on different geological conditions. Thus the geothermal heat control in underground mines is the most important and demanding issue to ensure a suitable working environment. In this study, expanded perlite aggregate (EPA) was incorporated as a lightweight substitute for sand. Five mixtures were prepared using 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% replacement ratios of sand by EPA. These, mixtures were tested in the laboratory for both the insulating and strength properties of the developed shotcrete. The goal of this research was not only to develop shotcrete which would exhibit good insulating properties but also which would exhibit strength properties similar to the regular shotcrete. This paper not only reports the results of the laboratory tests but also discusses the output of numerical model which was performed to evaluate the benefits of using the insulating shotcrete in reducing the cooling costs at hot underground mines.

The process of microwave-ultrasound assisted leaching of valuable metals from copper anode slime was proposed in this paper. Design of experiments has been used to study the effect of the main leaching parameters, such as microwave power, ultrasound power and reaction time. The central composite design (CCD) was used to predict the maximum leaching efficiency of copper, tellurium and selenium. The experimental data obtained were fitted to a second-order polynomial equation, and they also were analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA). The 3-D response surface plots and the contour plots were applied to determine the optimal conditions. The optimum conditions of microwave-ultrasound assisted leaching process were: microwave power 834W, ultrasonic power 638W and reaction time 403s. Under these conditions, the experimental leaching efficiency of copper, tellurium and selenium were 98.88±0.56% 98.96±0.78% and 98.57±0.67%, respectively, which agreed well with the predicted values.

"IntroductionTHE LEAD SMELTING Department of The Consolidated Mining •and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited (Cominco), at Trail, B.C. treats materials from numerous sources for the recovery of lead, •and, of secondary importance, for the .recovery of sulphur as S02• The Department's sintering section has a .capacity of 1,500 tons daily. This section is being replaced by •a new charge-•handling and sintering plant with a daily capacity of 2,000 tons of finished sinter. Materials handled in the sintering section comprise concentrates, ores, and fluxes from Company mines and from 'custom' (independent) producers, together with intermediate products from various plants of Cominco'•s Metallurgical Division, all of which must be treated to, make up a chemically balanced charge of a predetermined lead content for the sintering plant.As received, 80 •per .cent of these materials are finer than 200 mesh, and one-quarter of the tonnage (dry basis) is a slurry .at 30 to 40 per cent moisture. This slurry, a -residue from the electrolytic zinc operation, was, for many years, partially dried before being mixed with other dry materials to make up the sinterplant charge.Some experimental work carried out in 1937 indicated that the metallurgy of the sintering operation could be improved by adopting a technique of 'wet-mixing' followed by controlled drying and nodulizing."

During the past 10 years, research work to improve the survey of stope limits after mining supplied useful information, particularly for large open and sub-level stopes, regarding waste dilution caused by differences between final production limits and planned stope limits. However, the efficiency of this information to improve the overall efficiency of the mining process is limited, given that the impacts of inaccurate ore limits leading to dilution (sensu stricto) and ore losses haw not been considered adequately. Geological/sampling information should be optimized in terms of quantity and/or quality for the deposit characteristics and the constraints of the mining method used. As industry practice regarding the definition and recording of dilution is flexible and as ore losses frequently am poorly doc-umented, the use of these terms is reviewed. Simulations were carried out on two typical narrow gold deposits, based on an earlier study at Inco's Thompson mine regarding the impacts of wide to narrow delineation grids using recorded variations of vein geometry. Vertical to sub-vertical deposits of 3 m and 6 m widths mined by long-hole open stopes were considered. Deposits delineated by 7.5 m (25 ft) grids were taken as a base case and the impacts of less accurate limits in conjunction with long hole mining based only on a 15 m (50 ft) delin¬eation grid. The impacts of overestimation (dilution) and underestimation (metal losses) were considered separately, using the average error of +/-0.62 m recorded in the Inco study. The impact of less accurate information was much stronger on the narrower deposit: both dilution and ore losses diminished the net present value of the 3 m wide deposit by 39.27% and 45.41%, respectively, and that of the 6 m wide deposit by 12.84% and 11.55%. As the impacts of ore loss and those of dilution on the net present value am almost identical in these simulations, we could, in practice, assume a 50/50 split between dilution and ore losses in such a case. These results do no take into account the effects of local optimization measures taken at the mine production level (blasthole sampling near stope limits, etc.) The potential impacts of geological and sampling uncertainties in terms of lower NPV justify and require more systematic efforts to ensure that deposit appraisal work and feasibility studies are adequate to optimize company revenue and competitive returns to investors from mine production activities.

ABSTRACT It is critical that historical processes and concomitant exposures to specific nickel substances be understood because some diseases linked to inhalation of certain nickel-containing substances have a long latency between first exposure and disease onset, and because nickel substances vary significantly in their toxicological properties. A discussion of the smelting history and related processes at Vale Canada’s (Inco’s) Copper Cliff, Ontario, smelter is integral to the understanding of these processes. The post-1950 processing history, equipment, propensity for aerosol formation, operational procedures, and ventilation controls used by Vale Canada in roasting, smelting, converting, and copper-nickel separation is discussed.

"The Huntingdon mine of Quebec Copper Corporation is situated 3 miles south of the village of Eastman, in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. The copper deposit consists of several pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite replacement bodies or bands.The first mining operations on the conspicuous surface gossan of the Huntingdon deposit started in 1865. They were suspended in 1883. The .mine was again active from 1890 to 1893 and from 1912 to 1924. These operations were carried to a depth of 500 feet, and it is estimated that some 150,000 tons of ore were extracted, of a grade reported as varying between 3 Yi and 7 per cent copper.In 1950 a program of exploration was initiated in the area of the old mine, and resulted in the finding of 500,000 tons of ore with a grade of 2 per cent copper. A new shaft was sunk to a depth of 1,160 feet, and by February 1954 the mine was extracting 800 tons of ore daily.General Geology and StructureThe mineralized zones are on the west side of a band of altered volcanic rock, locally called andesite, adjacent to a sill-like body of serpentinized peridotite which lies west of the andesite. The bands of andesite and serpentine extend several miles north and south of the mine. Their strike is generally north 15 degrees east, and they dip steeply east. Their widths vary very considerably along the strike, but in the mine area each is about 450 feet wide on surface. They are enclosed in sediments of the Caldwell series, consisting of greywackes, quartzites, slates, and shales. The andesite belongs to the same series, which is thought to be of Cambrian age (1). The ultrabasic intrusive is post-Ordovician.At p\aces along the serpentine contact the andesite shows a pronounced schistosity; it is parallel to the contact and rarely extends farther than a hundred feet from it. No evidence of strong folding or faulting has been found so far in the mine workings. Some apparent distortions and irregularities in the strike of the contact may all be due to the intrusive nature of the serpentine. In the mine area, transgressive tongues of serpentine point southward in the andesite.A few vertical lamprophyre dykes, not more than five feet thick, cut the other formations at right angles."

Entre 1983 et 1997, l'exploitation de la pierre de taille au Québec a été marquée par l'émergence et la consolidation de plusieurs nouvelles variétés de granit, provenant exclusivement ou presque de la Province de Grenville. Le Québec demeure toujours le principal expéditeur canadien de granit dimensionnel, avec des expéditions annuelles représentant près de quatre-vingt-dix pour cent des expéditions totales canadiennes de granit brut et transformé. La production annuelle de granit brut oscille, depuis 1994, autour de cent mille tonnes métriques. Cette production a plus que doublé de 63 000 à 140 000 tonnes métriques entre 1981 et 1990, mais elle a connu une chute importante en 1991 (67 000 tonnes métriques); cependant depuis 1994, elle est en forte progression (Ménard, 1998). En 1983, le granit dimensionnel était extrait de plus de vingt-cinq carrières, dont les trois quarts se localisaient dans la Province géologique de Grenville. Comparativement, en 1997, le Québec comptait trente-sept carrières actives, dont trente-cinq dans le Grenville (Gaudreau et al., 1998). Cette concentration des carrières dans la Province de Grenville s'explique par la demande accrue de nouveaux produits au fil des ans et par le potentiel élevé de découvertes de nouvelles variétés dans cette Province géologique. L'accessibilité au territoire, toujours plus grande, a facilité la mise en production de carrières favorisant la diversification des produits. Le ministère des Ressources naturelles du Québec (MRNQ) a consacré depuis 1980, beaucoup d'efforts dans la recherche de nouveaux gisements et de nouvelles variétés. En plus des programmes de subvention destinés aux prospecteurs ou aux compagnies, le ministère a réalisé des campagnes d'inventaire de pierre de taille, de pierre concassée et de pierre d'enrochement pour en connaître le potentiel géologique et à orienter les recherches futures (Nantel, 1983; Nantel et Martignole, 1991; Bellemare, 1995a, b, c, d, e, f, 1997, 1998a and b; Bellemare et Petryk, 1996a, b, c and d). Cette étude donne un aperçu des différentes variétés de pierres extraites dans la Province de Grenville entre 1983 et 1997, les situe dans leur contexte géologique et en localise les principales régions productrices. Mine water from base metal mines is generally characterized as having high concentrations of heavy metals and low pH, resulting in the need for treatment prior to discharge to receiving waters. In this study, two high-rate clarification processes were evaluated at bench-scale: the high density sludge (HDS) process and sand-ballasted flocculation. High-rate clarification processes generate larger, denser flocs which settle more quickly than those formed in conventional flocculation processes. The HDS process uses recirculated sludge in order to seed floc formation, whereas ballasted flocculation uses microsand. Both of these high-rate processes require the addition of quicklime or hydrated lime to increase pH and allow for the formation of insoluble metal hydroxides, which can then be removed in the clarification stage. Previous research has shown that cement kiln dust (CKD) can effectively replace quicklime in conventional sedimentation processes for metals and acidity reduction to meet discharge guidelines (Mackie & Walsh 2012). CKD is an alkaline by-product of cement manufacture that has fine particle sizes and varying free lime concentrations depending on the manufacturing process. The lower solubility (i.e., free lime content) of CKD requires larger doses of material to be added to reach treatment pH targets for metals precipitation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the treatment efficacy of high-rate clarification processes for mine water treatment, compared with conventional sedimentation, at bench-scale with conventional (i.e., lime) and novel (i.e., CKD) pH adjustment additives. Results of the study showed that all treatment processes (i.e., HDS, ballasted flocculation, and conventional sedimentation) were able to reduce target metal concentrations to well below Canadian guidelines (i.e., total zinc and total nickel < 0.5 mg/L, total copper < 0.3 mg/L) using either CKD or lime. Additionally, mine water samples treated with CKD generated lower sludge volumes than those treated with lime (i.e., 50 versus 100 mL for conventional sedimentation and 100 versus 200 mL for HDS) even with increased concentrations of solids introduced during treatment. This is most likely due to slower neutralization rates when using CKD, due to its lower solubility, as well as finer particle size. The sand-ballasted flocculation process was able to reduce final turbidity in CKD-treated samples while the HDS process did not when compared to conventional sedimentation, making the ballasted flocculation process preferable for reducing final solids concentrations in CKD-treated mine water.

Remediation of acid rock drainage (ARD) was performed within a linear flow channel reactor (LFCR) via a floating sulphur biofilm (FSB). A full sulphur species material balance was conducted in order to characterize the sulphide oxidation. The reactor was able to achieve an 82% and 93% conversion of sulphide with a hydraulic residence time of 2 and 5 days respectively. 92% and 55.5% of the converted sulphide reported to the biofilm as sulphur for the 2 and 5 day residence times respectively. The mass transport limitations within the biofilm were identified via a dissolved oxygen gradient profiling system.

"In June 1985, Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME) was established. During the past 30 years, various major achievements are made in the discipline of rock mechanics and rock engineering field, especially in the last ten years. This paper will discuss the main rock engineering progress in association with China National Science and Technology Awards, “973 Program”, and “Tan Tjongkie Lecture”. The current status of rock engineering in China and some hot problems are summarized. Furthermore, some suggestions are given for addressing those problems. INTRODUCTIONThe modern concept of rock mechanics and engineering was initiated and developed after the Second World War. In this regard, the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) was established in 1962, subsequently further promotes its development. In June 1985, the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering was established. Various chief scientists, including professors Tan Tjangkie, Pan Jiazheng, Sun Jun, Wang Sijing, Qian Qihu, have made their huge efforts to the development of Rock Mechanics and Engineering in terms of the large-scale rock engineering projects in China.The achievements in the last 30 years significantly promote the development of China in different fields, such as energy, transportation, national defense and other national economy and major infrastructure facilities (Wang et al. 2004; Qian 2010, 2011). In other words, these projects also promoted the science and technology progress in rock mechanics and engineering across the world. Reviewing and analyses of the experiences on those key rock projects are beneficial to its technological development. She and Dong (2013), in view of literature statistical analysis, discussed the status and research progress in rock mechanics field associated with the last 30-year China's developments, including the rock strength and deformation theory, rock fracture and damage mechanics, the constitutive relation of rock dynamics, rock field coupling, rock reinforcement and stability analysis, etc. The challenging issues in rock mechanics were also proposed, which are the main concerns in rock engineering practices, engineering exploration, design, construction and operation."

In the flotation of Rare Earth Element (REE) bearing minerals, oxalic acid is reportedly acting both as a depressant and pH modifier. Testing has established the significance of oxalic acid in the flotation process however its specific role in either the recovery or selectivity of REE over their gangue minerals is not well understood. Pulp pH reduction trials with alternative acids have not shown the same effect on the REE mineral recovery or the depression of gangue phases. This work examines the effect of oxalic acid on the surface of gangue minerals (quartz and carbonates (dolomite and calcite)) in a series of conditioning tests. Gangue surface analyses by TOF-SIMS indicate that oxalic acid inhibits the transfer of secondary ions generated during the conditioning process from one mineral phase to another. In this regard, the oxalate anion acts to fix ions in solution through chelation, limiting their participation in surface adsorption.

"A complete laboratory process for the treatment of lateritic ores containing a high proportion of iron, as well as chrome and alumina, has been established. The ores treated originate from the tropical zones and result from superficial climatic alteration. According to recent estimates, the known reserves of such ores reach many billions of tons, thus representing huge potential reserves for the elements they contain.The process used is based on the alkaline roasting of pelletized ore in the presence of sodium carbonate. This treatment results in the separate recovery of pellets of upgraded iron ore, pure chrome oxide and hydrated alumina. The research described in the paper aims at determining the best experimental conditions for obtaining the highest extraction of the required oxide from this type of ore."
