In 1997, damage as a result of Castrol R40 entering the INCO pressure carbonyl plant carrier gas stream was becoming increasingly severe. The oil in the gas stream was adversely affecting both equipment availability and process control resulting in rising unit costs. The main source of the Castrol R40 was determined to be the carrier gas and low pressure gas blowers. Plant personnel initiated a plan to prevent the Castrol R40 from entering the carrier gas stream by replacing the mechanical shaft seals with Ferrofluidics seals on these blowers. The following paper details a brief case history of the Castrol R40 in the carrier gas including impact on the plant. This will be followed by a technical discussion of the new sealing arrangement that was developed by plant personnel, Roots Blower and Ferrofluidics. Lastly, this paper will update the status of the blower upgrade project and document the results to date.

"The otherwise waste heat in many water streams in the mining industry can be used to provide space heating of adjacent infrastructure including laboratories, workshops, and offices. This can be achieved by using heat pump systems, which can work as a replacement or in conjunction with existing space heating. In the example investigated—process cooling streams at an ore smelter—the analysis provided illustrates that annual heating costs can be 19% lower and a simultaneous 62% reduction in CO2 emissions can be achieved.RÉSUMÉ Dans l’industrie minière, la chaleur qui serait normalement perdue des circuits d’eau pourrait servir à chauffer des structures adjacentes incluant les laboratoires, les ateliers et les bureaux. Cela pourrait se faire en utilisant des systèmes de thermopompes, qui pourraient remplacer ou s’ajouter au chauffage existant. Dans l’exemple étudié, des circuits de refroidissement de procédé à une fonderie, l’analyse fournie illustre qu’il est possible de réduire les coûts annuels de chauffage de 19 % et d’obtenir une réduction simultanée de 62 % des émissions de CO2."

ABSTRACT Sorting has the potential to massively improve the pro?tability of mining base metal, hard-rock ores. However, several barriers to the increased application of sorting have been identi?ed, including a lack of mineral-speci?c sensors available to the industry. This paper presents the outcomes of acollaborative project to develop an induction-balance sensor speci?cally for low-grade copper and nickelores. A review of the basic principles of induction-balance sensing and of the sensor-rock interaction is presented. Early development and testing of the sensor on ores from the Thompson nickel belt in northern Manitoba is discussed. Shortcomings of the prototype identi?ed in early testing have now been over-come, leading to improvements in design and construction, as well as sensor accuracy. The improve dsensor has now been tested on additional ores from the Sudbury Basin, with good results. A discussion of potential applications is presented and recommendations for future development are made.

This Notwithstanding all the debates on climate change and renewable energy, coal remains the world's no.1 primary energy source even in the 21st century. In 2011 alone, total output rose from 420 million t to around 6.6 billion t. Similar growth rates are also expected for the next few years. In order to meet demand, new seams are being tapped and others mined far more extensively. In most cases, this means a move from open-cast to deep mining, and extracting coal from ever greater depths. At the same time, extraction processes such as the room and pillar method are being replaced by longwall mining, which significantly increases seam yield and therefore output. The depth of extraction with new, modified mining methods is increasing rapidly around the world - in most countries, much more rapidly than the corresponding expertise. A trade in mining expertise has therefore developed alongside the coal trade proper. Germany relies on coal imports, but can export mining industry services and advanced mining equipment. Geological conditions in the Ruhr and Saar coalfields forced Germany to drive forward development of deep working for hard coal years ago. For 30 years now, Germany has been mining hard coal at depths of over 1,000 m, and excavation is now at depths up to 1,600 m. Deeper extraction and more extensive excavation posed new challenges for both miners and equipment. Intelligent logistics, modern roadway development methods and longwall mining with ploughs or shearers combined with optimised process coordination offered pioneering solutions - solutions to enable costeffective coal extraction in the long term without compromising safety. Countries such as Russia, the Ukraine, China and the Czech Republic, where extraction is now reaching similar depths, can now benefit from this experience: they do not need to go through the same process of trial and development, but can draw on Germany's findings and ultimately save on costs. Now, Germany is offering this knowledge and experience on the international market on a client- and deposit-specific basis to continue providing mining countries with safe and cost-effective coal mining solutions and secure the energy supply. The presentation gives a number of examples of how international mining companies have used expertise from Germany to better meet the challenges of deep mining.

"Relating flotation performance to the electrochemical characteristics of a pulp remains a complex issue both in fundamental research and in practice. For example, in the case of thiol collectors different Eh values can result in the formation of the dimer or the metal thiolate which may or may not enhance the hydrophobicity of the mineral. Reducing or oxidizing conditions in a flotation system, viz. changing the Eh value, are usually manipulated to achieve an optimum flotation response by the control of pH and dissolved oxygen levels in the system. It is also possible to vary the potential by the addition of modifiers such as sodium hydrosulphide (NaHS), sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of the addition of the oxidising agents, NaClO and H2O2, on valuable mineral recoveries and grades in the flotation of sulphides from a PGM bearing Merensky ore. Batch flotation tests were conducted at pH 9.2, the natural pH of the system, in the absence and presence of a xanthate collector and Eh modifiers, viz. NaClO or H2O2. Most importantly in this way it was possible to vary Eh at constant pH and DO levels. The results indicate that in the absence or presence of xanthate the addition of H2O2 reduced both the recovery and grade of copper and nickel. In the absence of xanthate, the addition of NaClO improved the recovery of copper slightly and both the recovery and grade of nickel significantly, but in the presence of xanthate NaClO addition resulted in unchanged copper recovery and grade, but those of nickel were reduced. Based on anecdotal evidence that the addition of trace amounts of a potential modifier could improve flotation performance further tests were conducted the results of which suggest improved flotation performance.INTRODUCTIONIn the Merensky Reef, platinum group minerals (PGM) are commonly associated with base metal sulphides (BMS) and this has an effect on the way in which these minerals can be concentrated by flotation (Vermaak, Venter & Pistorius, 2004; Wiese, Harris & Bradshaw, 2005; Schouwstra, Kinloch & Lee., 2000). A major problem stemming from this association has been reported to be the loss of valuable minerals (PGM) associated with the loss of BMS (Wiese et al., 2005) during flotation. Shackleton (2007) suggested that PGMs behave in a similar manner to sulphides during flotation. Therefore, in order to recover the PGM, base metals are targeted. There is thus a need to investigate ways to improve the flotation performance of the sulphide minerals. The electrochemistry of the flotation of sulphide minerals has been studied for over half a century and there is consensus that sulphide minerals float only under a suitable redox environment (Heyes & Trahar 1979). This implies that reducing and oxidizing conditions during flotation of ores such as Merensky can be manipulated/varied to achieve an optimum flotation response.During flotation, sulphide minerals interact with thiol collectors in an electrochemical reaction to form hydrophobic species at the mineral surface (Finkelstein & Goold 1972; Rand & Woods 1984). The sulphide minerals are semiconductors and their interaction with collectors involves transfer of electrons. As such, a potential difference results which is responsible for driving electrons between reacting species (Fuerstenau, Jameson & Yoon, 2007). The magnitude of the potential difference affects the relative energies of charge carriers (electrons) at the mineral/solution interface hence controlling the direction and rate of charge transfer or rate of reaction (Bard & Faulkner, 2001). In a mixed mineral system the mineral/solution interface potentials account for the mixed potential which is critical to the process of flotation (Chander, 2003; Woods, 2003)."

For a long period of time, the Chinese Government has been attaching great importance to and supporting the rapid development of the coal industry. Particularly since more than 30 years ago, when China introduced the Reform and Opening-up policy, the reform and development of the Chinese coal industry has witnessed world-recognized achievements. National coal production increased from 618 million tonnes in 1978 to 3.52 billion tonnes in 2011. While China?s coal production accounts for 49.5% of the world?s total, its annual production growth contributes to over 80% of global production growth. China is a country utilizing coal as its main source of energy. As the Chinese Government gives support to the rapid development of new and renewable energy sources, as well as to increased coal utilization efficiency, the ratio of coal in the primary energy consumption mix will gradually decline. However, for a long period of time to come, the total volume of coal demand will keep rising modestly. The Chinese Government has been highly committed to and actively promoting the overall, coordinated and sustainable development model, which puts people first. It has put forward a strategic task to build an ecological civilization, and highlighted its resolve to uphold the basic national policy of resource conservation and environmental protection, with a view to the pursuit of sustainable development. China will incorporate its response to climate change into the national economic and social development program, and take effective measures to lower CO2 emissions 40?45% per unit of GDP in 2020 compared to 2005. At the same time, China will increase the ratio of non-fossil fuels to 15% in the primary energy consumption mix. All of the above factors have raised requirements for the Chinese coal industry, with implications for clear directions, plans and goals for the development of the coal industry.

Vanadium is concentrated in the fly ash which is produced as a solid waste from oil sands operations in northern Alberta. Although a process flowsheet using sodium chloride as a roasting reagent has been developed at the University of Alberta, recent studies examine the p otential o f p otassium o r c alcium s alts a s alternative reagents for roasting Suncor fly ash to recover vanadium. Suncor fly ash was roasted with CaO, Ca(OH)2, CaCO3, CaSO4.2H2O and KC1 at 750, 850 and 950°C. Water leach extractions for the calcium compounds were low (<45%); leaching with 100 g/L Na2CO3 gave maximum extractions of 56 to 69% at 950°C. Ash roasted with KCI behaved similarly to ash roasted with NaCl. These tests indicate that similar roasting conditions (25 to 30% KCI, 850°C, and 2 to 4h) could be used to achieve similar water leach extractions (75 to 85%). However, the lower solubility of KVO3 in solution, compared to NaVO3, would make the use of KCI instead of NaCl less attractive from a process and economic standpoint. Mineralogically, leucite (KAlSi3O8) was the predominant phase in ash roasted with KCl while, in crystalline samples of ash roasted with calcium compounds, anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8) and pseudobrookite (Fe2TiO5) were identified. Ash roasted below 950°C with the calcium compounds remained poorly crystalline.

It is necessary to assess the physical and functional conditions of highway bridges at regular intervals to ensure they still meet their service requirements. Currently, this condition assessment is mainly performed through visual inspection, which has been identified with several limitations (e.g. the timeconsuming assessment process and heavy reliance on inspectors? personal experience). In order to overcome these limitations and enhance the current inspection practice, this paper presents a novel method for automated bridge condition assessment using a hybrid sensing system. Under the method, existing conditions of bridge components are first captured with a stream of point clouds and color images. Then, the bridge components and the defects inflicted on the components are detected utilizing their visual patterns. The detection results are mapped to the point cloud. This way, the 3D information of the components and defects can be retrieved. The bridge condition assessment can be made effectively through the 3D visualization of this information before carrying out any on-site detailed evaluations.

"J. S. Redpath Limited, an underground contractor with a worldwide presence, has implemented innovative techniques in various projects in Canada to shorten the development cycle. Conventional methods currently used for installing primary ground support are compared with the Australian technique of bolting and meshing with jumbos equipped with twin telescopic booms, in-cycle shotcreting, and the use of two jumbos and two scissor bolters set up side by side in wide headings. Recommendations and lessons learned are presented with the aim of providing realistic expectations with regard to development advance rates in a mining environment.RÉSUMÉ J. S. Redpath Limitée, un entrepreneur minier souterrain d’envergure mondiale, a complété plusieurs projets au Canada où des techniques novatrices ont été mises en oeuvre pour raccourcir le cycle de développement. Cet article présente une comparaison entre les méthodes conventionnelles fréquemment utilisées pour le support de terrain, la technique australienne de boulonnage et d’installation de grillage au moyen de jumbos équipés de flèches télescopiques doubles, du béton projeté appliqué durant le cycle de développement et de l’utilisation de deux jumbos et deux boulonneuses côtes-à-côtes dans des galeries de grandes dimensions. Les recommandations et les leçons apprises sont présentées dans le but de fournir au lecteur des attentes réalistes quant aux taux d’avancement du développement dans un environnement minier."

The Outotec Flash Smelting process is widely used in primary copper production. A layer of slag on top of matte (copper–iron sulphide melt) creates a barrier through which matte droplets descend. Droplets of different sizes settle through the layer at different rates, which increases possibility of copper losses as smaller matte droplets may be removed with the slag. In this work CFD-DEM (computational fluid dynamics – discrete element method) coupling was used to simulate matte droplets settling through the slag during slag tapping. Discrete droplets and slag flow were simulated with DEM and CFD, respectively. This new approach enables tracking and solving movement and interactions of individual droplets. User-defined models were created to take coalescence and reaction kinetics into account. Coalescence created larger droplets, while the reactions decreased droplet size and increased its density. Drag caused funnelling effect, which pulled droplets towards the centre line of the descending cluster. This research is the only study known by the present authors in modelling liquid-liquid systems with the CFD-DEM coupling. Simulating coalescence and chemical reactions for discrete droplets enables more realistic simulations. However, CFD- DEM simulations are computationally resource intensive already without additional models, so a full scale industrial settler modelling still waits for further increase in computer performance. INTRODUCTION Flash smelting is a method used in copper and nickel production. In the flash smelting process, oxidation of sulphides in a concentrate is used to release energy needed to smelt the feed. In the process, copper matte is formed. Matte has copper content in the range of 55 – 70% (Sridhar, Toguri, & Simeonov, 1997), the rest is mainly sulphur and iron but has still many other impurities (Taskinen, Seppälä, Laulumaa, & Poijärvi, 2001). Oxidized iron forms iron-silicate slag while SO2 is collected for acid production (Davenport & Partelpoeg, 2015). The Outotec flash smelting furnace (FSF) can be divided in four major component: concentrate burner, reaction shaft, settler and uptake. Concentrate, flux and oxygen enriched air are injected into the reactor through the concentrate burner. The mixture then reacts in the reaction shaft forming matte and slag, which are collected in the settler, while off-gases flow out of the reactor through uptake for heat and dust recovery, and SO2 collection for H2SO4 production. The matte and slag form separate layers due to immiscibility and density difference. Raw material feed is continuous, but the matte and the slag are tapped periodically. A flash smelting furnace is depicted in Figure 1.

The AG/SAG circuit discharge P80 is now increasingly referred to as the “Transfer Size” or T80 for short. From the literature it is apparent that in circuit design some approaches to the sizing of AG/SAG mills as well as the ball mills that they feed use this parameter. This paper reviews whether the use of the T80 is appropriate in this context. In the course of the review examples of AG/SAG discharge size distributions measured from range of operating circuits are used to illustrate the arguments made.

The presence of an alpha case on titanium parts produced by investment casting is problematic and has to be eliminated. The traditional techniques for the evaluation of its thickness are metallographic measurements and micro-hardness profiles. To obtain a better understanding of how the alpha case is formed with the underlying objective of limiting its depth, the present study proposes to characterize the microstructure and the chemical composition of the alpha case. Electron microprobe analyzer (EMPA) linescans were used to quantify the oxygen and substitutional elements that come from the mould and promote the alpha case formation. The chemical profiles were correlated with metallographic and microhardness measurements. For microstructure, optical microscopy (etched and polarized light analysis) was used. For phase analysis, samples were mechanically polished step by step and analysed using X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. Furthermore, surface analysis techniques such as XPS and Auger Microscopy were evaluated but results were found to be inconclusive because the formation of the oxide layer was faster than its ablation and the matrix could thus not be analysed. The alpha case was observed on a Ti-6Al-4V step block casting.

"The Murray Brook precious metal (Au, Ag) gossan deposit is one of nine supergene mineral deposits that have developed over polymetallic massive sulfide deposits in the Bathurst Camp of New Brunswick. Reserves consist of 1.9 Mt of gossan containing 1.53 g/t Au and 65.9 g/t Ag. The supergene zone at Murray Brook consists of six distinct units: a) altered massive sulfide, b) pyrite-quartz sand, c) massive sulfide gossan, d) disseminated sulfide gossan, e) ferruginized wallrock, and f) leached bedrock. The massive sulfide gossan constitutes the main body of economic mineralization and consists of goethite, primary quartz, secondary amorphous silica, K-Fe-Pb-As- Sb-Ag hydrated sulfate and oxide minerals (beudantite, plumbojarosite, jarosite, bindheimite, scorodite), trace cinnabar, and cassiterite of primary origin. The order of stability of sulfide minerals during oxidation was pyrite _ arsenopyrite _ galena _ Bi-Sb sulfosalts _ chalcopyrite _ tetrahedrite group _ sphalerite.Two mass balance techniques (isovolumetric and conservative element) indicate elemental depletion in gossan relative to primary ore in the order: S>Cd=Zn>Cu=Mn>Na=Ca>Fe=Al=V> Mg= K=Se=Hg>Pb>Ti>Ag>Mo=P>Ba; and enrichment in the order Au>As>Sb>Si>Bi. Tin, as cassiterite, is conservative.Mineralogic and paleomagnetic data suggest that the gossan deposit formed under a warm temperate climate throughout the Pliocene. The rate of oxidation and the compositional nature of the ore was significantly influenced by: a) the position of the primary sulfide zone in a downward moving hydrological system, b) primary sulfide composition and zonation that promoted the development of a strong electrochemical oxidation system, and c) pronounced intercalation of carbonate and sphalerite mineralization in sulfide zones, which promoted rapid development of secondary porosity, permeability and downward flow of oxygenated groundwater.During progressive oxidation and physico-chemical erosion of the gossan zone, Au was transported downward in groundwaters, probably as a Auo colloid complex, to be concentrated in the lower horizons of the gossan profile. The precipitation of Au was greatly increased in the pyrite/arsenopyrite zones. Gold concentration was multi-cyclic with continual dissolution and nucleation of the metal until final concentration in the void structures of the gossan. Leaching experiments and microprobe analyses indicate that Au is present in the gossan as submicron composite sols of Au-Ag-silica."

Non-ferrous metals find their applications in smartphones, tablets and computers. These materials with their particular properties are the basis of our modern life. SMS group is well prepared for this huge market and for growing future challenges. A large contribution here is the new joint venture PolyMet Solutions that was founded by SMS group and Mettop, an Austrian engineering company, with the objective to develop new technical solutions for the primary copper production lines as well as for non-ferrous metals starting with the primary smelting of concentrate and ending with the electrolysis. PolyMet Solutions provides the process know-how whereas SMS group supplies the plants and equipment and Mettop the key components. SMS group and Mettop also cooperate in the field of tankhouse technology. Together with Montanwerke Brixlegg AG, Mettop has developed together with a parallel flow technology (METTOP-BRX Technology), allowing a current efficiency of above 98 % at a current density of 420 A/m², which is a milestone in copper electrolysis. For the secondary copper production route, SMS group and PolyMet Solutions developed an innovative refining furnace (PolyRefine) for the smelting and refining of copper scrap. The refined copper is directly charged to the Contirod line to produce copper rods and wires. The innovative cooling solutions of SMS and PolyMet Solutions come into play where furnaces have to stand the highest loads and stresses, for instance in areas of very high temperatures or temperature fluctuations, aggressive exhaust gases and slags, or at critical spots such as taphole areas. This revolutionary, patented cooling technology is jointly marketed by Mettop and SMS group. It permits water-free cooling to be implemented and thus makes operation safe wherever it is applied. INTRODUCTION Non-ferrous metals or NF metals are changing the world. There is no modern industrial sector that can do without these valuable metals. Non-ferrous metals find their applications in smartphones, tablets and computers. These materials with their particular properties are the basis of our modern life. The importance of the non-ferrous metals market is reflected by two figures. In 2018, the production of non-ferrous metals was worth more than 237 billion Euros. Hauling trucks are important part of equipment fleets for large earthmoving operations such as those encountered in dams and highway construction projects. This paper presents an automated methodology for tracking and estimating productivity of hauling trucks fleet operations in near-real-time. Recent advancement in automated site data acquisition technologies made their use in tracking and monitoring of construction operations feasible. However, these technologies fail to track hauling truck fleets due to the change in the cut and fill locations from one cycle to another; making tracking and progress reporting difficult and inaccurate. In addition, there is very little work done utilizing data sensed directly from equipment, for example sensing when truck dumping bed is raised during the dumping process. The technologies deployed in the developed method are Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and equipment control sensors. Low cost passive RFID tags are attached to hauling trucks and fixed RFID readers are attached to loaders or excavators. The read range of the used RFID tag is centimeters, to be activated only when a loader with an attached RFID reader is loading a truck. On the other hand, control sensor is connected to the truck control system and operated by the motion of its movable bed. The function of control sensors is to record the signal time when the truck operator gives order to the truck control system to raise or lower truck bed. The captured data is then transferred wirelessly from the RFID reader and control sensor to a computer housed in one of the temporary offices onsite and subsequently to the main server in the contractor?s head office. Fusing the data captured from RFID reader and control sensor is used to identify loading, travel, dumping and return time that constitute the hauling truck cycle time. The collected data is analyzed and processed automatically, without human intervention, to calculate the productivity of the hauling truck and to report it directly to onsite personnel. Relational database is developed to support the implementation of the proposed method. The developed database is used to process the data captured by the RFID and the control sensor to calculate the productivity achieved in cutfill operations in near-real-time. The developed methodology is expected to facilitate early detection of discrepancies between actual and planned performances.

"Grinding mills are the heart of the mineral processing plant, and are production-critical machines which are required to achieve high availability. Liner wear life and a liner design that promotes ease of installation are important variables to achieve a high level of mill availability. Increased mill size results in more mill internal surface to protect, and more liner components to install and remove. This drives designers toward an increase in liner size to minimize the number of components to be installed by the liner handler. The liner attachment method can also have a large impact on mill availability as well as safety during installation.This paper outlines the experience from the development, installation and follow-up of liners installed in two 38&apos; x 45&apos; AG Mills at Boliden Aitik in Sweden. A new Poly-Met shell liner concept has been developed to minimize the number of liner components. The new Poly-Met shell liner components are made much larger than conventional Poly-Met or steel liners. This reduces the number of components to be installed/removed by the liner handler and helps to minimize installation time and consequently down- time. A new attachment system has also been developed to eliminate the need for the installation crew to be in the “drop-zone” of the shell liners while installing the liner bolts.One interesting aspect of this project was the requirement to predict liner life for these new large format AG mills. The existing 22&apos; diameter mills at Aitik provided a base-line reference for this purpose, and DEM studies were used in the project development stage to predict the wear life of shell liners for the new 38&apos; diameter AG mills. "Spent hydrodesulphurization (HDS) catalyst contains rare metals such as cobalt, nickel (Ni), molybdenum (Mo), and vanadium (V). The overall objective of this project is to develop a hydrometallurgical process that provides a degree of high recovery and selectivity of these rare metals from spent HDS catalyst. As a part of this project, this study focused on (i) development of a solvent extraction-precipitation stripping process for separation of Mo and V from solutions and (ii) optimization of grinding conditions of alkaline leaching residue for selective Ni sulfuric acid leaching against aluminum (Al). Experimental results showed that effective separation between Mo and V can be achieved by the two-stage process; solvent extraction of Mo and V with TOA (tri-n-octylamine) and precipitation stripping of V with ammonium salt at pH above 8.0. Regarding grinding conditions of alkaline leaching residue for selective Ni leaching against Al, it was found that Ni leaching efficiencies increased by providing higher grinding intensity, while the Al leaching efficiency increased and then decreased with increasing grinding intensity.INTRODUCTIONHydrodesulphurisation (HDS) catalysts account for about one third of the total worldwide catalyst consumption and are extensively used for sulphur removal in petroleum refineries (Zeng & Cheng, 2009). Fresh HDS catalysts generally contain molybdenum (Mo) and nickel (Ni) on an alumina carrier, but various elements included in the crude oil such as sulphur, carbon, silica, arsenic, cobalt, and vanadium (V) deactivates HDS catalysts during HDS reactions. As a result, spent HDS catalysts contain high concentration of rare metals. For example, regarding to Mo and V, it has been reported in the literature that the concentrations of Mo and V in the general spend HDS catalysts are generally 10-30% and 1-12%, respectively (Zeng & Cheng, 2009), which makes it economically viable to recover these rare metals (Biswas et al., 1986).Among a number of processes proposed for the recycling of rare metals from spent HDS catalysts, alkaline leaching is often used for selective Mo and V leaching (Zeng & Cheng, 2009). However, the process which provides a high degree of separation between Mo and V from a leaching solution had not been developed. Therefore, the first objective of this study was set to develop a solvent extraction-precipitation stripping process for the separation of Mo and V from solutions. More specifically, using artificial aqueous solutions of Mo and V, a series of experiments was performed to optimize the extraction pH, stripping agent, and the stripping pH."

"The aim of the study is to have a good understanding of the change in the seepage field during and after the tunnel excavation in weathering alteration rock. Field tests are used to monitor the changes of the water table and the numerical model is used to analysis the influence of the seepage filed with different operation conditions during and after the tunnel excavation. Results indicate that the depth, diameter and pumpage of precipitation well are the main factors that have a great influence on the drainage effect. Results also indicate that different operation conditions had various effects on the decrease in water yield during tunnel construction and the recovery in groundwater level after construction.INTRODUCTIONAs a potential disease during tunnel construction, Gushing water not only affected construction schedule, increased construction cost, as well as affected tunnel stability and safety during operation, but also decreased ground-water level. What’s more, the fall of water table caused by gushing water in tunnel would have influenced surrounding residents’ living water, agricultural water and ecological environment around tunnel. In recent years, enough emphasis has been paid to the influence on environment due to the construction of tunnel as a result of the reinforcement of people’s environmental protection awareness.As a result of water collection and drainage after excavation, groundwater was discharged into the tunnel, which caused a loss of water resources in the adjacent mountain mass. Furthermore, during tunnel operation, it was difficult for groundwater level to resume its original condition, which caused a bad ecological environment, because drainage system during tunnel construction destroyed its original hydrologic dynamic balance.In order to study whether decreased groundwater level resulting from tunnel construction could be restored during operation to its original condition, this paper gave a field monitoring on tunnel displacement during construction and simultaneously, generalized model of regional hydrogeology was created according to field hydrogeology to carry out a calculation of stable seepage flow and draw comparisons between recovery conditions of various water levels."
