The exploration staff of Campbell-Chibougamau Mines Limited has used past experience to delineate several areas of geologic interest under Lake. Chibougamau. Du• ring the winter of 1964-65, a reconnaissance induced polarization survey was carried out on the lake. First, several lines were surveyed over the known mu1.erahza-tion at the Henderson mine; the grid was then extended into the areas of interest. Several anomalous zones were located and drilled; one, of these proved to be of economic interest.

"An antimony-bearing gold ore was studied in a cyanide slurry containing 7 -20 ppm dissolved oxygen. 1 g/L NaCN at pH 9.5 and 48 hours retention time is required to extract 94 % of the gold from the 90 % minus 200 mesh ore by conventional cyanidation at a 7 ppm O2. As oxygen concentration was increased to 20 ppm, the conditions required to extract the same amount of gold were: 0.25 g/L NaCN, 16 hours retention time and 80% minus 200 mesh. Compared to conventional cyanidation, oxygen-enriched leaching was shown to reduce retention time by three times and cyanide consumption by four times. The kinetics of gold dissolution related to the dissolved oxygen concentration in slurry was expressed by following equation:XAu = 100 * (Kt + I0) / (1 + Kt + I0)where XAu is the percentage gold extraction; t is the retention time; K and Io are the slope and the intercept of the plot of XAu I (100 -XAu) vs. t respectively. The values of Kand Io depend upon the concentrations of cyanide and oxygen, the fineness of grind and the origin of ore sample etc.. A preliminary cost analysis was also performed to justify the use of oxygenating slurries.IntroductionGeneral:It was proposed almost 149 years ago (Elsner 1846) that oxygen is required for the dissolution of gold in cyanide solution. However, little attention were paid to oxygen application in the gold milling industry during the following one hundred years. Due to the constraints of gold price, reagent costs, refractory ores, and environmental issues in the past decade, the oxygen enhancement in the cyanidation process was introduced to the gold milling industry for increasing operation efficiency, reducing production costs, and meeting the requirement of environmental standard.The advantages of oxygen-enriched cyanidation have been reviewed by several investigators (Hague 1992, Jara et al 1992, Henderson 1989, Loroesch et al 1988, Elmore 1987, Cathro 1963). At Barrick's Zaldivar Copper Mine in Chile, the addition of sulfuric acid to the ore going to heap leaching is a major expense. A process in which a portion of this acid is replaced by elemental sulfur added to the heap has been developed by Barrick and Westcoast Biotech that has the potential for significant cost savings. Initial shake flask tests with plant raffinate solution indicated that oxidation of elemental sulfur by a culture of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, some indigenous to the Zaldivar heap, showed a significant lag period. This lag period could be reduced by dilution of the raffinate, but dilution would not be economical to implement at Zaldivar. Short (0.75 m) column tests indicated that after the initial lag period, sulfur biooxidation occurred steadily and the acid requirement for obtaining the same copper recovery as the control without sulfur was reduced by as much as 13 kg/t. These tests were followed by taller (5.1 m) column tests that confirmed the reduction in acid consumption, with no negative effect on copper extraction.

Underground excavation in hard rock is normally stable at shallow depth except for wedge failure. However, the excavation depth is rapidly increasing recently. In high overburden stress condition, the integrity of rock would be destroyed with degrading rock strength. Therefore, understanding both the peak and the post-peak strengths of hard rock are necessary to assess the tunnel stability at depths. The characteristic of the post-peak strength is seldom studied in Taiwan in the past. Various estimation methods for the post-peak strength degradation were briefly reviewed in the paper. Based on the Geological Strength Index (GSI) system is widely used in the determination of the rock mass strength, the quantitative residual GSI system was adopted to estimate the possible strength degradation for a hydraulic tunnel in Taiwan. The Mohr-Coulomb model (no strength degradation) and the post-peak strength degradation model (strain softening model) were used to simulate the excavation of the case tunnel at different depths. The analyses demonstrate that the tunnel is in stable condition at 600m of depth. And the effect of the postpeak strength degradation on tunnel deformation is progressively significant with increasing tunnel depth. Approximate 3-5 times of increase in crown settlement and horizontal convergence would occur when post-peak strength degradation are considered at 2400m of depth. Severe tunnel deformation may endanger the tunnel stability. Modeling results reveal that the post-peak strength degradation has a great effect on tunnel stability under high overburden stress condition, which should not neglect in deep tunnel design.

"Printed circuit board (PCB) is the main part of any electric or electronic device, providing mechanical support and electric connection for the board eclectic components such as capacitors, resistors, diodes etc. PCB consists of non-conductive substrate overlaid with one or more layers of copper sheets. They also contain appreciable amounts of base metals (copper, nickel, tine, and aluminum) and precious metals (gold, silver, and rare earth elements (REE)) which end up in the landfill at the PCB end-of-life.PCB recycling E-waste in general is a profitable business; many valuable raw materials, precious and base metals, can be extracted with high purity. Approximately, one metric tonne of PCBs may contain 80-1500 g of gold and 160–210 kg of copper. The precious metals recovered from PCBs occur at concentrations higher than commercially mined minerals. Also PCB recycling is very important to our environment since many heavy metals (e.g. lead) may be leached from the landfills to the underground reservoirs. In Jordan, however, the work conducted on E-waste and PCB recycling in particular is limited; currently most of the E-waste is either exported or dumped in the landfill.In this work, a combination of physical (magnetic separation), physicochemical (flotation), and chemical methods (leaching) were used to compare metals concentrations in leach liquors produced from a concentrates resulted from a combination of these methods. It was found the leach liquor of the magnetic fraction of the PCB coarse size gave the highest concentration of Fe, Al, and Ni while concentration of Cu was higher in leach liquor of nonmagnetic sink fraction. On the other hand, metals concentration almost similar for both sink and float of the fine size fractions, indicating even distribution of metals concentrations in the fine size fractions."

"Tensile tests and scanning electron microscopy-electron backscattered diffraction (SEM-EBSD) analysis were performed in an Al-Mg-Si alloy to clarify the effect of annealing and cold-rolling reduction on the texture formation. The hot-rolled specimens were cold-rolled with the reduction of 58-75%(CR1), followed by annealing at 773 K for 5 min(IA). The secondary cold-rolling(CR2)for the IA specimens with the reduction of 33–66%, followed by the solution heat treatment(ST), were performed. Focusing on the CR1 and CR2 specimens, the average r-values increased with higher primary and lower secondary cold-rolling reduction, respectively. This was considered to be due to the increase of r-values measured in the direction of 45 degree with respect to rolling direction, caused by the formation of the ß-fiber components (Brass {011}<211>, Copper {112}<111> and S {123}<634>) with high density. Based on the texture analysis of annealed specimens it was suggested that the high density of the ß-fiber components after IA and the small amount of stored strain energy of CR2 introduced by the lower cold-rolling reduction remained the ?-fiber components even after solution treatment.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si alloys have been applied to automobile body applications, due to their excellent paint-bake hardening (age-hardening) and corrosion resistance compared to other aluminum alloy. On the other hand, the mechanical properties and deep drawability of Al-Mg-Si alloys are inferior to those of steels. Thus, it is important to improve the mechanical properties and deep drawability in order to expand the application components. One of the best methods to improve the deep drawability is to increase the Lankford coefficient (r-value). Previous studies reported that the increase of the average r-value ( ) improves the deep drawability. The relationship between the r-value and texture of the alloy is also well known. Inoue et al. reported that the ß-fiber components, such as Brass ({011}<211>), Copper ({112}<111>) and S ({123}<634>), increase the r-value measured in the direction of 45o with respect to the rolling direction. r"

"Flotation is a complex and highly multivariate process. Using the conventional OFf (one-factor-at-a-time) technique, the optimization of flotation circuits through laboratory or plant testwork is difficult, time-consuming and therefore, expensive and often results in marginal improvements. The optimal operating conditions can be more efficiently estimated when a systematic approach like SDE (Statistical Design of Experiments) is taken.The concentrator of Noranda's Brunswick Mining Division (near Bathurst, New-Brunswick) is well known for the complexity of its differential copper-lead-zinc flotation circuits. One of them, the chalcopyrite-galena separation (or CuSep) circuit, is impacted by more than 20 variables.Statistical Design of Experiments (SDE) techniques were applied at the laboratory scale to improve the performance of Brunswick's CuSep circuit. Screening tests were conducted using Fractional Factorial designs while optimization tests were carried out based on Response Surface Modelling techniques like the Central Composite design. Every series of tests, without exception, revealed new information and process insights which led to significant circuit performance improvements in the plant So far, the metallurgical gain may be as high as four percentage points of copper recovery (in the CuSep circuit). Potential cost savings of expensive consumables (steam, activated carbon) have also been identified but will require additional circuit modifications before being realized.IntroductionIn spite of its apparent simplicity, flotation is a complex three-phase (solid, liquid and gas) separation process. Casthouses throughout the aluminium industry commonly use chlorine gas as a fluxing agent for furnace and in-line treatment of molten aluminium alloys. Its positive impact on the removal of alkali elements and non-metallic inclusions is well known. Nevertheless, the elimination of its use is highly desirable due to the safety and environmental risks associated with storage and handling. Over the past decade, the aluminium industry has significantly reduced its chlorine consumption. This has been achieved by maximizing the chlorine gas utilization efficiency during metal processing, and by the chlorine replacement for crucible and furnace metal treatment applications. Operation of sealed in-line treatment units without chlorine is now possible, but with lower or inconsistent removal efficiency penalties for alkali and inclusions respectively. This paper reviews the progress made at Arvida Research and Development Centre regarding the reduction of chlorine and the development of an alternative to chlorine for in-line metal treatment without penalizing the metallurgical performance.

"A set of Al-Co binary alloys (with respectively in weight percent 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% Co) have been studied by X-ray diffraction at the as compacted state. The structural evolution according to cobalt addition shows special features as the apparition of fcc cobalt and hcp cobalt beside aluminium in some cobalt compositions of the Al-Co mixtures using only cold compaction without sintering at high temperature. Figure 1 Cobalt is not a common alloying element in aluminium because its solubility is very low [1]. According to the pressure-temperature phase diagram, Co is known to exist in two allotropic forms: a low-temperature hcp phase and a high-temperature fcc phase [2-3]. At room temperature, Co is stable in the hcp form but it transforms to the fcc form when it is heated to above the transition temperature 695K. Powder aluminium and cobalt (99.999 %) were used in the proportions defined according to the required compositions. The total mass of the samples to be elaborated was between 8 g and 10 g. Cold compaction of mixed powder (Al-Co) under an uniaxial load of 10 MPa has been achieved to obtain a dense product (60%)."

"The Mountain Lake deposit is a tabular sandstone-type uranium deposit, hosted by the basal unit of Middle Proterozoic Dismal Lakes Group. Uranium occurs mainly as sooty pitchblende disseminated in stratiform lenses within gently dipping quartzose sandstone. It is associated with copper sulphides, pyrite, hematite, and traces of nickel and cobalt arsenides and of silver.Exploration HistoryUranium showings on the PEC claim group were discovered during 1969 by an airborne radiometric survey carried out over the Dismal Lakes-Great Bear Lake area by Aquitaine of Canada Limited (Bizard and Salat, 1969). Some drilling was done in the vicinity of the showings in 1975 by the company under a joint venture with Eldorado Nuclear Limited but the results were not encouraging (Hassard and Woollett, 1975). During 1972, Trigg, Woollett and Associates Limited conducting surveys for Imperial Oil Limited, discovered numerous high-grade radioactive boulders scattered over a distance of several kilometres north and west of the showings, and the area north of the PEC claims was staked as the YUK claims (Ahuja, 1974). A systematic study of the boulder distribution and Pleistocene geology suggested a source additional to the showings. More intensive exploration followed, and in 1976 drilling just north of the PEC claim group boundary intersected the main deposit at a depth of 75 m to 150 m, beneath overburden up to 60 m thick. Part of the deposit extends into the PEC claim group which is under exploration by the Aquitaine-Cominco Joint Venture.The following brief description is based on the presentations in 1978 by F. THE orebodies of the Preston East Dome mine show a considerable variation in size,? shape, dip, and ground condition. They vary from small and large irregular masses being mined by shrinkage, cut-and-fill, and square set-and-fill mining methods to narrow veins being mined by open stoping. Standardization of mining operations has necessarily been difficult. This considerable variation in mining condition prompted the development of a bonus system which would give more equitable bonus payments through-out the mine than those obtained by the usually accepted methods of calculating mine bonus. PRINCIPLES ON WHICH THE SYSTEM IS BASED Under an incentive bonus system, performance (efficiency) and a price per unit of work done are inter-related. It is in the application of this? principle to working conditions .in the Preston East Dome mine that the system to be described differs from the standard methods of calculating mine bonus. It was found that the method of paying a fixed price per unit of work done, under the &apos;contract&apos; system, gave satisfactory results in development, less satisfactory results in timbering, and results which were not satisfactory in stoping. Under the fixed price system, bonus payments, in timbering and stoping particularly, were very erratic and did not necessarily represent fair payment for the work done. A fixed price in development is satisfactory because the work done, and the conditions under which the work is done, are uniform. The drilling and blasting cycle is completed in one shift, the size of heading is con-trolled, and a minimum number of holes are required in order to obtain a satisfactory break. The performance possible under these conditions has been found to be confined to a fairly narrow range. By performance in development is meant the efficiency of the working crew as expressed in terms of the two variables of feet of advance per round and pounds of ex-plosives consumed per foot of advance. A change in rock formation, how-ever, may alter to a marked degree the performance possible, quite independent of the skill and energy of the working crew. The changes in working conditions that affect development performance from the standpoint of bonus calculation are usually easily apparent and are satisfactorily met by establishing several fixed prices.

THE Twin "J" Mine, operated by Twin "J" Mines, Limited, represents an amalgamation of the old Lenora, Tyee, and Richard III mines (see Figure 1) on mount Sicker, eight miles by road, northwesterly, from the city of Duncan, on Vancouver island. These mines produced 253,000 tons of copper-gold ore between 1898 and 1909 (see Table I). During the more recent period of production from these properties, July, 1943, to May, 1944, Twin ?J? Mines, Limited, mined and milled ore with values mainly in copper and zinc, and minor values in gold, silver, and lead. Figures are not available for this later production. Field work at the property was started by the writer in 1941 and continued in 1943 and 1944.

Cathode wear has become an increasing challenge in the aluminum industry due to the use of more graphitized materials. Today, there exist no standard laboratory methods for measuring cathode wear where different commercial materials can be ranked. The typical average wear rate in an electrolysis cell is quite small. The aim of this work was to design a test method where the wear could be accelerated compared to industrial cells. It was focused on polarized tests where the cathode is exposed to electrolyte, which gives higher aluminium carbide solubility. The cathode materials were characterized by microscopy and image analysis.

Rock and soil mechanics investigations were carried out in block VIII at Thar Coalfield, Pakistan. Most of the strata were mainly composed of sand, with an average content of 67.68 %. Laboratory studies of rock and soil samples from drill hole GT-01 revealed that the strata in block VIII are very weak with an average uniaxial compressive strength of 3.59 MPa, an average tensile strength of 0.68 MPa, an average Young?s Modulus value of 0.234 GPa, an average cohesion of 129.19 KPa, and an average friction angle of 55.47°. Slope stability analysis, based on a probabilistic approach, was carried out using Slide-V software. Monte Carlo simulations have been applied to investigate the probability of failure in the slopes of an open pit lignite mine in block-VIII. From the slope stability investigation, it was found that the probability of failure is 0 % at a slope angle of 16°.

The original flowsheet of the TANCO mill consisted of a simple two-stage gravity circuit for the recovery of the tantalum concentrates. With decreasing grade and grain size of the tantalum minerals, considerable modifications to the circuit have been required. This paper discusses the various recent improvements carried out 011 all stages of the flowsheet, which have resulted in a 10% increase in recovery. Future improvements, including on stream analysis, and the possibility of tantalum flotation , are also discussed.

Because of the adverse environmental effect of Chromate, Molybdate ions had been investigated as replacement for Chromate and the results had shown not to be encouraging. Film deposited from peroxopolymolybdate (from reaction of Molybdenum meta, with excess Hydrogen Peroxide), are more robust than that deposited from molybdate solutions. This was shown to be due to higher fraction of Mo (IV) and Mo (V) that form from Mo (VI) in the peroxopolymolybdate deposited film than the film deposited from Molybdate solutions. The peroxopolymolybdate film contains 40% un-hydrated molybdic acid, tetraperoxodimolybdate and tetra peroxo tetra molybdate. The protective properties of peroxopolymolybdate were shown to be due to the effectiveness of the un-hydrated molybdic acid.

Statistics shows that the majority of accidents with fatal outcome are caused by methane and/or coal dust explosion. This leads to assume that contemporary counter-explosion systems of various designs cannot be considered effective. Considering the growing threat of methane explosion in the coming years along with the development of deeper levels, the improvement of a system for protecting people in underground opening appears urgent. This paper presents the results of the testing of the Automatic System from Methane Explosion in Coal Mines. The protective system consists of: i) a wireless device for the detection of explosions and activation of a protective system, and ii) an absorber with a pyrotechnic device ensuring the discharge of dispersed water. The protective system, at the command of the initiation signal, produces tailored dispersing water mist with droplet sizes in the range of 25?400 ?m along selected tunnel sections.

"The presence, size, orientation, nature, and persistence of geological discontinuities dictate the behaviour of a rock mass. Block size, which is defined by discontinuity spacing, by the number of joint sets, and by the persistence of the discontinuities delineating potential blocks is an important indicator of the degree of fracturing of a rock mass. Consequently, block size is represented either explicitly or implicitly in all rock mass classification systems employed for analysis and design of surface and underground mining structures. Insitu block size distributions may provide a better means to describe the structural complexity of a rock mass. These are the distributions that would be derived if the in-situ rock mass was separated into its constitutive blocks, delineated by existing discontinuities, and each block measured. This paper presents the results of a field campaign at Louvicourt Mine aiming to characterize the rock mass using different methods for determining block size and block size distributions. IntroductionGeological structural data are used to provide input data for analysis and design methods for surface and underground structures. As the collection of structural data involves considerable investment of time and effort, it is sometimes overlooked, thus denying an important source of information for mine design. What is somewhat surprising, however, is that when structural data are available, they are not used to their full potential. Recent work has shown that data on block size have potential applications in different areas of rock engineering:• Blasting — Hudson (1993) has described the excavation process as the change of a preexisting natural block size distribution to the debris fragment size distribution (Fig. 1). Lizotte and Scoble (1994) have reviewed previous efforts on integrating site specific geological conditions into blast design. Grenon et al. (1997) provide a case study where in-situ block size distributions are compared to photogrammetric studies of blasted rock.• Rock mass classifications — Block size is used in the majority of rock mass classification systems either explicitly, as in the RMi classification system Palmstrøm (1995), or implicitly, such as in the NGI system, Barton et al. (1974)."

"The Property of Rix Athabasca Uranium Mines Limited is in the Beaverlodge area of northwestern Saskatchewan. The mine is 7 miles by road north from the Lake Athabasca port of Bushell which is 250 miles north by aircraft or boat from railhead at Waterways, Alberta.The Rix property is a portion of the former DD 1 concession, obtained in 1949 from the government of Saskatchewan when private prospecting for uranium became permissible. The concession was prospected in detail during the 1950 and 1951 field seasons and a great many radioactive show-ings were discovered. Development and drilling were concentrated in two and later three of these areas, and by late 1952 enough ore had been indicated in the Leonard series and ""Smitty"" zone to justify underground development by adit-drift and shaft respectively.Four hundred feet of drift development on the Leonard No. 1 vein and the sinking of a two-level vertical shaft with related lateral development on the Smitty zone were completed in 1953. In April 1954 the Smitty section was placed in production at a rate averaging 100 tons per day, thereupon becoming the first privately owned post-war uranium producer in Canada. The ore is shipped for processing 12 miles by truck to the mill of Eldorado Mining and Refining Limited.Until recently all of the Company's production was drawn from the Smitty orebody. In April, 1955, ore production commenced from the faulted west extension of the Smitty structure, known as the Rix 62 zone, and from the Leonard No. 1 vein.The Smitty orebody (see Figure 2) is an intensely brecciated lenticular zone bordering both sides of the Smitty fault. The breccia areas are irregularly mineralized with pitchblende, very sparse galena, and pyrite in a gangue of feldspar, chlorite, calcite, and silica, all thoroughly soaked with fine-grained hematite to produce the locally-called ""red alteration"".Tenor of the ore currently being mined is classified information. The average grade estimated, prior to production, was 0.20 per cent (4.0 lbs.) U308 per ton."
