Three types of gold species were observed for gold-zeolites, prepared by reduction of ionexchanged Au species in a series of zeolites: (i) Au3+cations, (ii) neutral Au0 n or charged Aus+ n clusters suggested to be inside the zeolite channels, (iii) Au nanoparticles with diameter varied from 2 through 20 nm located on the external surface of zeolite microcrystals. Contribution of the gold species formed in zeolite after the ion exchange was found to depend on zeolite type, acidity of zeolite, temperature of reduction and time of storage of the exchanged and reduced Au-containing zeolites. Au3+ ionic species and clusters Aun were formed after the ion-exchange procedure (in contrast with the familiar production of Agn in same zeolites). Gold nanoparticles were observed only as the result of reduction of the Au-exchanged forms at elevated temperatures due to reduction of Au3+ species and aggregation of clusters.

"This paper describes the improvements made to the operation of a liquid phase, 300°C, heat transfer system in the paste plant of an aluminum smelter. These improvements were achieved by replacing the original heat transfer fluid, a synthetic aromatic, with a new technology, petroleum-based product. This new fluid, Calflo HTF, provided better thermal stability, with lower toxicity, and improved plant working conditions.The procedures for fluid selection, changeout and performance monitoring are described along with a summary of control analysis over the last three years."

Electrorefining of low-grade copper alloys containing various amounts of nickel, lead, antimony, bismuth, arsenic, selenium, silver, and gold in sulfamic acid media was demonstrated. The copper concentration of the alloys used as an anode was 70–90 wt%. The electrolyte contained 100 g L-1 of free sulfamic acid and 40 g L-1 of cupric ion. Galvanostatic electrolysis was conducted at 200–300 A m-2 in the electrolyte using a low-grade copper alloy anode and a stainless steel cathode at 25C. The terminal voltage was approximately 0.8 V at the start of the electrolysis, although it increased periodically to approximately 2.0 V and then shortly returned to its initial value. Nickel, lead, and arsenic from the anode dissolved in the electrolyte and were removed. Antimony, bismuth, selenium, and silver were removed as solids. Consequently, a dense copper cathode was obtained, and the concentration of copper was evaluated by inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectrometry to be 99.82–99.99 wt%. INTRODUCTION Electrorefining of copper is conventionally carried out in a sulfuric acid electrolyte using crude copper assaying at 99.5 wt% Cu as the anode (Biswas & Davenport, 1994). Elements more noble than copper do not react anodically, and consequently, they are distributed in anode slimes. Elements less noble than copper dissolve from the anode. Nickel and arsenic are stabilized as aqueous species. Lead, antimony, and bismuth react with water, sulfuric acid, or arsenic acid to form barely soluble compounds; thus, they are distributed in anode slimes. An emerging issue in the electrolytic refining of copper is an increase of impurities in crude copper used as the anode (Moats et al., 2013). This is due to an increase in the content of impurities in copper concentrates as well as an increase in the types of secondary copper feedstocks (e.g., E-Scraps, automotive shredder residues, and smelting residues) treated in the copper pyrometallurgical process. An extreme case is a copper smelter that does not use copper concentrates as feedstocks. In such a process, copper-bearing feedstocks are smelted in a top submerged lance furnace to prepare low-grade copper alloys assaying at 80– 90 wt% Cu (Sekimoto et al., 2013). Such low-grade copper is not acceptable as an anode in the conventional copper electrolytic refining process because it is easily passivated during electrolysis. Consequently, electrolytic copper is produced by leaching the atomized low-grade copper in a sulfuric acid solution with oxygen, followed by electrowinning. However, electrowinning should be avoided whenever possible because the electrical energy consumed in electrowinning is 5–10 times higher than that consumed in electrorefining. In the past few years there has been considerable controversy on the most suitable material to be used in ventilation doors which will have to serve also as fire doors. For this reason it was thought useful at Mclntyre to find out to what extent our zinc chloride treated spruce doors were fire resistant and what protection we could expect in case of an underground fire. The doors to be tested were constructed of the same material as that used in our regular ventilation doors underground, namely, 2-inch tongue-and-groove well seasoned spuce. It is to be noted, however, that whereas the dimensions of the ventilation doors are 5 ft. by 6 ft., those of the test doors were only 14 in. by 17½ in. The treated doors were made up from lumber that l1ad been treated with chromated zinc chloride, as described in Mr. Keeley's paper. Two kinds of tests were carried out: a heat test and a flame test. An electric muffle furnace for assaying, equipped with a pyrometer, was used for the beat test, the furnace door being replaced by the wooden door to be tested. In the flame test, the door to be tested formed one end of a rectangular steel box in which was placed a large blow-torch. Air was admitted at the rear of the box. A pyrometer recorded the temperature at the inside surface of the door where flame impinged. The results of the tests are presented in the accompanying table, in which the word 'failed' is to be interpreted as meaning that the door had been damaged to the extent that smoke, but not necessarily flame, issued from its outside surface.

Regeneration of the leach lixiviant, namely hydrochloric acid, is a critical operation in the process. A number of different process routes are available for recovery of hydrochloric acid from chloride solutions. The paper describes activities undertaken for intensification of copper cathodes production in electro-refining plants of the Polish copper smelters: 'Legnica', `Glogów I' and `Glogów II'. In the 'Legnica' smelter, Outokumpu?Wenmec machine was used for preparation of copper anodes. Intensive studies were conducted in order to optimise copper electro-refining conditions. As the result of them, spacing between the electrodes was reduced to 99 mm, which enabled placing forty-one cathodes in each tank and increasing amperage from 10.8 to 13.0 kA. This modification resulted in the increase of electro-refining capacity to 103,000 tons/y. Intensification of the copper production at `Glogów II' by 18,000 tons/y became possible after development of new electro-refining procedures, including application of a regime of changes in electrolyte level during the cathode cycle, implementation of the changes in location of starting sheets relative to anodes, and in dimensions of the sheets, and modification in the shape of the anodes. Similar works have been performed at `Glogów I', which were concentrated mainly on defining of a new method of anodes preparation, modification of their geometry, determination of optimum current density, composition of a set of inhibitors and of a method of their introducing. The implemented solutions resulted in the increase in electro-refining capacity at `Glogów I' from 207,000 to 240,000 tons/y.

Load Haul Dump vehicles (LHD) are extensively used in underground mining however equipment design and operating conditions contribute to restricted operator?s visibility. The inability to clearly see people, objects or hazards around the machine has contributed to a number of accidents including fatal injuries. In order to identify vehicle design characteristics resulting in restricted and blocked sightlines visibility assessments are traditionally completed in the field. However, field methods are unable to evaluate visibility under dynamic operating conditions and are limited in their ability to provide feedback on the impact of various operator characteristics such as sitting height, for example. Results of this research show computer simulation and virtual reality can be successfully used to evaluate visibility during the operation of LHD vehicles. In order to benefit from virtual reality applications the work environment, LHD vehicle and human posture need to be represented as accurately as possible. A computer simulation program with ergonomic ana lysis features, Classic JACK 3.1, was successfully used. Threedimensional CAD models of LHD vehicles were developed from manufacturer specifications and pictur es taken from LHD vehicles currently in use. The LHD models were imported into the JACK environment, a digital human was positioned in the cab of the LHD vehicle and the vehicle and human where driven over a typical mine route. Real-time feedback in the JACK program was used to identify what the operator could see under different operating conditions. Machine characteristics and operating scenarios resulting in impaired visibility were successfully identified with this method. The JACK program can also provide real-time feedback on the human?s joint forces and torques, strength requirements, postural comfort, and metabolic energy expenditure. As a result, this method could be used to successfully evaluate musculoskeletal injury risk factors along with system design recommendations to improve workplace safety and productivity in any setting. The LHD VRML files imported into JACK have also been combined with environment files into other VR software packages (e.g. Maverik) to view in a VRL facility, managed by MIRARCO at Laurentian University. The VR models using these packages can be viewed in stereo to provide better appreciation of spatial visibility issues.

IN view of the truly remarkable development of special steels for special purposes, the mining industry has for years looked forward to a time when steel makers would come forward with a product which would be an improvement over the straight carbon steel which has always held the field for drilling rock. In order to avoid making changes in conventional shop practice, the industry has perhaps been too insistent upon obtaining a water hardening steel which could be handled in the blacksmith shop by long established methods. As early as 1932 or 1933, an oil-hardening tool-steel of the one per cent carbon, plus chrome, plus molybdenum type was applied to hollow drill steel. It was known as a hard as well as a tough steel, and one that, theoretically, should give a good account of itself as a rock drill, if properly heat-treated; and so it has proved in actual trials. There were numerous deterrents which retarded adoption of this steel. For several years there has been a constant improvement in the drilling qualities of the straight carbon steel, and, considering the higher unit price ? of the alloy, there has been considerable doubt in the minds of some mining? men as to what advantage there might be in the use of alloy over straight carbon for hollow drill steel. The alloy being an oil-hardening steel, its adoption meant having two kinds of steel in the mine, for a time, and that spelled trouble, unless some positive means of identification was adopted. The hardening and forging ranges of alloy steel being narrow also made necessary much closer control over these operations if poor results were to be avoided. These thoughts undoubtedly prevented its use becoming wide-spread, for, as a matter of actual record, less than fifteen per cent of all the hollow drill steel used in Canada today is alloy.

Geostatistics has been widely accepted as a standard tool for reserve estimation and mine planning. Kriging has been adopted as the best estimator of grade. Although many discussions have been conducted in the use of kriging in the mining industry, insufficient attention has been given to solutions for over-smoothing. This effect has been frequently encountered in many mines. The so-called over-smearing refers to two facts: (1) over-reduction of grade variabilities and (2) over-estimation of low-grade ore tonnages. This study attempts to link over-smoothing effects with several other practical aspects in kriging. These include the weight independence of data values, variogram modeling, and search strategy used in estimation. All solutions recommended here are suited for precious metal deposits (e.g. gold) in open-pit mining.

Sarcheshmeh refractory consumption rate is about 7.5 - 8 kg/ton of the produced copper, which is almost three times higher than the other smelters practice. High destruction rate of tuyere zone refractory controls vessel productivity and operational lifetime. In this research with the aid of cold model and computational fluid dynamic (CFD), melt recirculation pattern and gas - liquid plume properties in the wide range of gas blowing conditions were studied. Results revealed that in addition to the well-known mechanical refractory destruction mechanism, fast tuyere zone refractory destruction could also be related to the cold bubble cluster formation near tuyere tips and introducing severe thermal shock to the refractory surface. Removing accretion and its strong bonds to the refractories around tuyere tip, causes refractory mechanical destruction and increases tuyere diameter. Increased tuyere diameter, in turn assists gas discharge in the bubbling regime. Air blowing in the bubbling regime result in the formation of big bubble clusters, bubble breakup and back attack occurrence which all found to have major impact on the refractory lifetime. Outcomes of this research, contributed to the plant converting management, blowing hardware and instrumentation improvement.

Underground mine workers are continuously exposed to many sources of noise and vibration in carrying out their tasks. Even though the vibration and sound level of some mining equipment is documented, it was found that this information is not readily available for many pieces of equipment and that it is not considered when choosing equipment or planning tasks. As well, health problems related to vibration and noise are among the main causes of work-related compensations in mines. Considering those facts and although no Canadian regulations could force employers to limit the exposure of their workers to vibration, the Société de recherche et développement minier (SOREDEM) decided to address the problem by including vibration among their research priorities. In order to characterize noise and vibration sources of different mining equipment used for underground mining, the authors have performed a study in 8 different mines in Québec on 28 different mining equipments. The paper will present the procedure that was followed to select the list of equipment to be evaluated and the low cost acquisition system developed to perform multichannel time domain acquisition in harsh environments. It will also present the results obtained for the noise level produced by the equipment as well as for the hand-arm and whole-body vibration exposures.

Financial capital is highly volatile and if the investor does not get adequate compensation for the risk faced he may consider withdrawing his capital assets from the company and consequently produce a structural change in any sector of the economy. We study the variation in profitability of assets in terms of the changes that occur in the markets. The choice of models used is justified by the extensive theoretical and empirical use of them throughout the history of financial economics. We have used the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) and the model based on the arbitrage pricing theory (APT) to determine the beta value. These models have been applied to the monthly returns of 27 mining companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) or London Stock Exchange (LSE), using data from the period covered from January 2006 to December 2010. The results of time series and cross sectional regressions for CAPM and APT produce some errors, suggesting that many companies have failed to obtain an adequate cost of capital. Also the results show that higher risk firms tend to have lower profitability. These findings make it unlikely to be maintained over the long term the current status and could drive structural change in the mining sector in the form of mergers.

Various types of thin-walled structures have been frequently used as energy absorbers to mitigate the adverse effects of impact and hence protect the vehicle structure under consideration when subjected to different loading conditions. Compression tubular structures that buckle in a progressive manner, can be used to advantage, providing inexpensive and versatile, but nevertheless weight and stroke efficient energy absorbers. In this paper quasi-static nonlinear finite element simulations are performed to study the effects of number of corners of the cross-section, wall thickness, plastic hardening rate of material, foam-filler and load angle on deformation mode and mean crushing force of tube. Crush strength increases as the number of corners of the cross-section increases, though it almost saturates for the number of corners beyond 11. Higher plastic hardening rate stabilizes the collapse pattern. Foam-filled tubes seem to have higher critical load angles in oblique loading and display a more stable and gradual decrease in mean load over the transition region. Substantial decrease in the initial peak load and dynamic load at any a given deflection was observed as the load angle increases. The investigation of bitubal arrangements and Multi-cell tubes reveals that these may be preferable to monotubal specimens due to the presence of the inner profiles. In addition, a comparison is conducted between the numerical and experimental results of the mean forces of some special angle elements. Good agreement is obtained.

"The first tentative test made to try rubber lining in grinding mills was made in the early twenties. However, because of poor rubber compounds and design the results did not prove to be promising.In the early sixties successful trials of rubber linings were carried out as a result of a cooperation between boliden AB and Skega AB.One of the reasons rubber was not used earlier for linings was the difference in wear characteristics between rubber and steel. The ability to successfully develop rubber mill liners depends on three factors:l. Design2. Material (rubber compounding)3. Experience (knowledge)DESIGNThe main difference between steel and rubber, in material aspect, is the elasticity and the low tensile and shearing strength of rubber. It is necessary to take maximum advantage of the elasticity and to reduce tensile and shearing forces by minimizing the sliding of the mill charge. This is accomplished by using the Lorrain type of liners, i.e., lifter bars and plates. It is, however, necessary to keep a certain balance between lifter bars to optimize liner life and grinding performance."

In September 1996, Dofasco commissioned a 165 Mt twin shell EAF furnace and an associated ladle fleet. During and after this startup, refractory performance in the ladles was optimized on a holistic approach through several initiatives that increased ladle refractory retention times from 7000 to over 16000 mins (160 heats). This dropped the overall refractory costs by 40% while ensuring a consistent and predictable ladle performance. One initiative that drove enhancements was the proper brick selection for each particular refractory area and it's process conditions. The work concentrated on the selection of a resin bonded alumina magnesia carbon (AMC) brick in the barrel area of the ladle, upgrades to the 2 piece monolithic alumina cast ladle bottom and increasing the slagline refractory brick quality with the appropriate zoning/paneling. The adoption of a magnesia alumina carbon (MAC) brick in the transition area of the barrel/slagline has also improved performance and predictability. The design developments have lowered the overall wear rates and balanced the service life of the entire ladle. Safety was improved and breakout potential reduced by changing the safety lining from a high alumina brick to a state of art technology - monolithic shotcrete lining. This initiative decreased the overall manpower required to brick a ladle and increased shop ladle availability. The ladle bricking area environment was also improved by adopting a post combustion device to burn phenol fumes from ladle preheating practices. This has improved the overall health & safety of the reline teams. The consistent and predictable performance of the ladle on a whole has allowed the shop to decrease the number of working ladles in operation from 5 to 4. This further decreased wear rates from over-oxidation and excessive thermal cycling, saving approximately $500,000 in natural gas from pre-heater operations.

This paper outlines Canada's current status in world iron ore markets, and evaluates the prospects for the future. Estimates for the production, export and consumption of iron ore are given. Canada's major market will continue to be the United States, with the European Common Market countries, Japan and the United Kingdom also forming important outlets. The advantages held by Canada's major competitors in these latter three market areas are briefly discussed.
