"Quinsam Coal Ltd. is assessing the potential of developing a thermal coal deposit near Middle Quinsam Lake on Vancouver Island. The coal reserve outlined is classified as a high-volatile, bituminous ""A” steam coal and is composed off our separate seams of varying quality within the Late Cretaceous Comox Formation.Open-pit mining methods will utilize a walking dragline and a truck / shovel module as the primary stripping tools. Following washing and mechanical drying in a Baum jig preparation plant, the coal will be transported to the proposed dock at Campbell River for shipment via 55, OOO-DWT vessels to world markets. The paper will outline the development and status of the project to date. IntroductionQuinsam Coal Ltd. is a joint venture of Weld wood of Canada Ltd. and Luscar Ltd . The participants propose to develop a thermal coal mine in the Middle Quinsam Lake area, 17 miles inland from Campbell River on Vancouver Island (Fig. I). By acquiring all the assets of Canadian Collieries in 1962, Weldwood also came to own the coal rights of the area proposed for development. Luscar Ltd . ha s been designated as project manager until completion of construction and thereafter will act as operator of the mine.Surface mining methods will be used to produce approximately 1.0 million short tons of coal annually from the Quinsam property. Seven separate mining pit s will be developed along with the supporting minesite facilities, including a proper paration plant. Transportation routing to Campbell River and the establishment of docking facilities will be required. The initial economic life of the mine is 12 years, with the provision to extend this in the future by developing higher-ratio, auger or underground reserves."

Due to urban subway tunnels mostly built in the cities with highly density buildings, the geological and construction conditions is complex, especially certain sections of the subway tunnel will pass through from the foundation of the overpass, therefore the stability and surface deformation control of that section’s tunnel excavation is particularly important. Taking Xi'an Metro Line Three interval tunnel as a research object, we have used FLAC3D simulation to analyze the tunnel’s surrounding soil deformation and tunnel lining stress distribution under bridge foundation with shallow buried covered excavation method. Analysis results show: (1) After the excavation of the tunnel right line, due to the bias of the upper bridge foundation the right of the tunnel showed relatively large deformation. In order to ensure the construction safety, we recommended using the grouting anchor reinforcement on the right side wall to further control the deformation zone. (2) The maximum vertical displacement of the ground occurred in the right wall of the tunnel portion which was due to the intensity of soil outside the grouting range of the arch is low, as a result the deformation is larger; this position requires special attention, strengthening the monitoring measurements of this part is necessary to avoid the large deformation and other adverse effects of the upper portion of bridge foundation. (3) The maximum vertical force area of the initial lining of the tunnel is in the middle of the side wall, while the second lining in this part of forces is smaller, thus at the beginning of the construction of the liner, attention should be paid to this area. On-site grouting or steel bracing reinforce support may be used if necessary.

"Unaltered biotites from three samples of monzonite and gabbro from the Copper Mountain stock and a single sample from a pegmatic biotite-chalcopyrite vein cutting the Triassic Wolf Creek formation have a mean K-A age of 193±7 m.y. These data support a suggestion based on geological evidence that Copper Mountain ore deposits are related genetically to the Copper Mountain stock.A cogenetic mineral pair (biotite and clinopyroxene) from a sample of sericitized and chloritized monzonite of the Copper Mountain stock have identical K-A ages of 150 m.y., which probably represents a time of wide-spread, post-ore, hydrothermal alteration. This alteration is believed to be related genetically to a group of post-ore intrusions known as the ""mine dykes,"" suggesting that they also have an age of 150 m.y."

"Fractures in mine hoist drumshafts are rare. We know of no previously reported attempts to repair a fractured drumshaft; any feasible method would involve welding and the associated problems of distortion, crack formation and strength.In June 1984, a fracture was discovered in the drumshaft of the production hoist in the Teck Corporation, Lamaque Division Mine at Val d'Or, Quebec. Delivery time on a new shaft would have been at least six months. The shaft was repaired in ten days and the total out -of-service time was four weeks.This paper describes why the shaft failed, how it was repaired, and the special alignment procedures employed during re-installation to minimize stresses in the repaired area.IntroductionThe performance of a mine hoist drumshaft is absolutely critical to mine operation. An inoperable drumshaft means no hoist, which in turn means no production or mine operation.Fractures in mine hoist drumshafts are rare. Previously when they have occurred, no one has seriously considered attempting a repair because of problems involved. Any feasible method would involve welding, which raises several major problems - namely, metallurgical, alignment, and strength.In July 1984 this very situation occurred at the Teck Corporation, Lamaque Division Mine in Val d'Or, Quebec.It was recognized that a new shaft would take at least 6 months' fabrication and delivery time. However, having had some experience at repairing broken shafts in other machines under similarly desperate circumstances, and after due consideration, it was concluded that by applying the correct techniques and engaging the right expertise, it would be possible to perform a repair and have the mine back in operation within a month.Thanks to outstanding efforts by all, the repair was accomplished in ten days and total out-of-service-time was only four weeks. The causes of the failure were determined and the calculated stress levels confirmed by strain gauge measurement during operation.The success of this project was achieved by adhering rigorously to fundamental management and engineering principles."

The process modules available are:• crushing by jaw and cone crushers;• pre-concentration by the Dyna Whirl Pool dense media system;• grinding by wet rod or ball mills;• separation by gravity, magnetic, flotation or leaching-CVP adsorption methods;• dewatering by lamella or conventional thickeners and vacuum filters.To form complete plants, auxiliary equipment is also available, such as:• bins, feeders and conveying systems;• power generator units;• water tank and pump for process water;• interconnecting piping and cables;• erection and service tool kits;• set of spare and wear parts.For mine sites with rainy or winter conditions, a plastic tent with air heater can be supplied to cover the ore dressing equipment. "Rare earth elements (REEs) are essential for many applications in electronics, energy harvesting, and defense. The common resources for economic extraction of REEs are oxides such as bastnaesite and monazite, which are scarcely available in the earth’s crust. On the other hand, REEs are available in many clay and phosphate ores where REEs substitute Ca or Si in the mineral lattices or as physically adsorbed cations at negatively charged sites on the clay surface. While REE oxides readily dissolve in acid, making the chemical leaching of REEs an economically viable option, adopting a similar approach for leaching of silicates and phosphate ores is unfeasible because of significantly low REEs content in these ore deposits. Bio-leaching approaches are environmentally benign and economically viable. We investigated the bio-leaching (Acidothiobacillus ferrooxidans (Af) and the fungal Aspergillus niger (An)) of REEs from a phosphate ore, and examined the factors governing the leaching processes. Based on the shake flask leaching studies, an increase in surface area combined with an increase in pulp density (1-15 wt. %) was found to lead to an increase in the amount of REEs leached. In contrast, an increase in the surface area by reducing the particle size from 75 to 35 led to a decrease in the amount of REEs leached. These differing attributes are proposed to be due to the poor bacterial growth/activity with high F- ions in the leaching media, F- released from the edge-sites of the smaller particles. On the other hand, several advantages that associate with the Af bacterial bio-leaching processes relate to the media composition (Mg2+ and (NH4)+) and phenomena occurring at the electrical double layers of the mineral and bacterial- water interfaces. These studies suggested that leaching of particles occur in a layer-by-layer manner.INTRODUCTIONRare Earth Elements (REEs) are essential for many important applications, such as in electronics, energy generation, and defense. The common resources for economic extraction of REEs are typically carbonates such as bastnaesite and monazite, which are scarcely available in the earth’s crust (Y. Kanazawa and M. Kamitani, 2006). REEs are abundantly available in many clay and phosphate ores where REEs substitute Ca or Si of the mineral lattices. Conventional acid leaching of REEs from oxides is not economically feasible for clay and phosphate ores because of significantly low REE content (parts per billion) in these ores (Tian, J., Chi, R., Yin, J., 2010a; Moldoveanu G. A. and Papangelakis V. G., 2013; WK Goyne, LS Brantley and J Chorover, 2010). In some cases, REEs could be extracted from these ores via chemical leaching routes as they constitute reasonable amounts of REEs (0.1 - 1% REEs). A major challenge faced in general in chemical leaching processes (Chi, R., 1988) is the loss of REEs in the phosphate/gypsum precipitates/crystals, which are overcome in a step-by-step manner by sequentially removing impurities such as fluorine and calcium, including steps carried out at elevated temperatures. On the other hand, bio-leaching approaches provide environmentally benign and economical alternatives. Acidophilic bacteria are currently being used for industrial scale bio-leaching of Au/Cu/Ni from low grade ores. Studies on bioleaching of REEs from red mud (Al2O3) using Penicillium tricolor and Aspergilus niger (An), and, of bio-leaching (lab-scale) of phosphate rocks using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (Af) have been reported (Boon, M., Heijnen, J.J., 1993; Qu, Y. and Lian, B., 2013). We conducted bacterial (Af) bio-leaching of REEs from a phosphate ore in shake flasks and columns, while examining the key factors that govern leaching kinetics."

Increasingly sophisticated rock mechanic tools are becoming more and more available for today?s ground control specialist. However many problems are still beyond our ability to explicitly calculate or measure. There is often a gap between the ?art? and the ?science? of rock mechanics. This paper focuses more on the ?art?, giving relatively simple examples of underground observations and micro-seismic records to help explain ground control issues. Ground support techniques such as in cycle shotcrete with high pressure water scaling, mesh and bolting, pumpable resin bolts/cablebolting, and yielding bolts with load spreading straps are discussed. The use of primary/secondary type blasthole sequences in moderate to high stress situations is also discussed with several examples of the micro-seismic response to the stoping. Relatively erratic geology with high material strength contrasts is currently being mined with blasthole methods at Nickel Rim South. Although the mine is still in its? ?early? days, over 1 million tonnes has been extracted and some empirical experience is highlighted with potential longer term issues also being discussed.

"Niobium and tantalum are strategic metals for electronic and alloys industries. They are produced by pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy but most of the niobium and tantalum production processes are not environmentally friendly. For instance, in the hydrometallurgical route, niobium and tantalum separation can only be achieved by liquid-liquid extraction in the presence of hydrofluoric acid by taking advantage of the difference in niobium(V) and tantalum(V) speciation in fluoride-based media. Therefore, the environmental footprint of hydrometallurgical processes for the production of niobium and tantalum could be clearly lowered by replacing HF or NH4F by greener media such as alkaline solutions in which high solubility of niobium(V) and tantalum(V) can be achieved.The development of such new efficient and environmentally friendly hydrometallurgical processes requires a fine description of the physicochemistry of niobium(V) and tantalum(V) in alkaline solutions. Unfortunately, literature data show a huge discrepancy on niobium(V) and tantalum(V) speciation in such media. This paper gives a brief overview of the niobium(V)-tantalum(V) production processes and paves the way to the development of alternative processes in alkaline media by presenting and discussing recent advances in the physicochemistry of niobium(V) and tantalum(V) in these media.INTRODUCTIONNiobium and tantalum are strategic metals since they are used for the production of alloys and super alloys, capacitors and magnets in strategic industries such as electronic, aeronautics and automobile. The main sources of niobium and tantalum are given in Table 1."

"Plant owners and operators, plant designers and grinding mill manufacturers are giving much attention to the design and manufacture of autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding mills, particularly the mills that have large diameters and draw power up to 10,000 hp and greater. Reliable designs giving long operating lives are required in today 's ore processing plants.This paper reviews bench-scale and pilot-plant testing to determine first if the ore is suitable .to be ground by these methods and then reviews the data obtained from pilot-plant testing that is used to select the mills and the grinding circuit. The paper then discusses the use of the pilot-plant results to design the mills. The most important pilot-plant data used for mill design are power and the amount of ball charge to be used. The mill size selected is a combination of these factors. Pilot-plant data not only establish power requirements, but can be used in the selection of the type of drive, variable speed or fixed speed, and the operating procedure to be followed. This leads into the mill control circuit to be used. The total charge in the mill, the type of drive and mill discharge arrangements are needed in the calculation of stresses and bearing loads. Conclusions reached from pilot-plant work are used to obtain data for process design, and autogenous and semiautogenous mill design should be part of any test program incorporating either or both of these grinding methods."

"Determining the correct mechanism of a boiler tube failure is important for the prevention of future tube failures. Proper corrective measures can be undertaken to alleviate the root cause or causes for a failure only when the correct mechanism is known. A mechanism of boiler tube failure is defined as the process which degrades the tube and produces a failure.An expert system package was developed for use by electric utility power plant personnel during investigation into the cause of a boiler tube failure. It is intended to assist their efforts to recognize and identify a basic failure mechanism that can produce the type of boiler tube failure under investigation. The program guides the user to the most likely failure mechanism by asking simple questions, answers which can be obtained by determining the failure location, type of fuel, and from visual inspection of the failed tube. Expert systems are a form of artificial intelligence which imitate the decision-making process of experts.IntroductionBoiler tube failures (BTFs) continue to be the single largest source of forced outages in fossil fired electricity generating stations. Because of this a concentrated effort is being made to minimize boiler tube failure occurrences. Eliminating boiler tube failures could be worth $5 billion a year to the electric power industry(1).The aggressive service environment of fossil-fired boilers is largely the reason for these failures because the combined effects of stress, temperature, corrosion, erosion and vibration cause deterioration of boiler tube material properties and reduction in wall thickness.Determination of the boiler tube failure mechanism is important for the prevention of future problems. The root cause for a failure can be established and proper ameliorative measures taken only when the failure mechanism is identified correctly. The correct identification of failure mechanism is a complex process which may include many individuals and institutions. Technical specialists in metallurgy, chemistry, combustion, and boiler design frequently cooperate with the station staff in a failure investigation . These individuals rely on personal experience and numerous reports , theories, studies, private communications and investigations concerning the different failure modes and mechanisms."

As a result of the dramatic growth of Edmonton, Alberta during the past decade and the rapidly increasing price of natural gas, Edmonton Power has received provincial government approval to construct and operate an 8O0-megawatt- capacity coal-fired thermal generating station at Genesee, about 50 km southwest of Edmonton. The power plant will consist of two 400-megawatt steam-driven thermal generators, with provision in the future for two or more additional units. The coal will be hauled by truck from the nearby three-million-tonnes- per-year strip mine, with economically recoverable reserves exceeding two hundred million tonnes. Edmonton Power controls a major part of the coal leases in the area, and is working with other lease holders in developing the most efficient mining plan. A natural depression was selected as the site for the 600-hectare cooling pond to provide water for the power plant. Edmonton Power is working closely with the people in the area to ensure that their rights and concerns are communicated and recognized by all parties.

"The metal-matrix-nano-composite (MMNCs) in this research work consists of an A356 alloy matrix reinforced with 1.0 wt. % SiC 50 nm diameter nanoparticles that can be dispersed within the molten alloy matrix via ultrasonic stirring technology (UST) and induction melting and stirring processing. The necessary ultrasonic parameters to achieve the essential cavitation for adequate degassing and refining of the A356 alloy as well as the optimum fluid flow characteristics for uniform dispersion of the nanoparticles into the A356 alloy matrix have been investigated in this study by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling with a magneto-hydro-dynamics (MHD) model and an UST cavitation model.The MHD model accounts for turbulent fluid flow, heat transfer and solidification, electromagnetic field as well as the complex interactions between the solidifying alloy and nanoparticles by using ANSYS Maxwell and ANSYS Fluent Dense Discrete Phase Model (DDPM) and a particle engulfment and pushing (PEP) model.INTRODUCTIONAluminum matrix nanocomposites can offer outstanding properties, including low density, high specific strength, high specific stiffness, excellent wear resistance and controllable expansion coefficient, which make them attractive for numerous applications in aerospace, automobile, and military industries field (Bozic, 2010, De Cicco, 2009, Elshalakany, 2014, Goh, 2006, Jia, 2013 and 2015, Liu, 2014, Reihani, 2006, and Su, 2010).As shown in literatures (Aki, 1999 and Mussert, 2002), it is highly advantageous to use nano-sized ceramic particles to produce metal matrix nano-composites (MMNCs) since similar ductility and higher strength with the metal matrix can be achieved. Currently, there are several fabrication methods of MMNCs, including mechanical alloying with high energy milling (Chen, 1997) , ball milling (Filho, 2003), nano-sintering (Groza, 1999), spray deposition, electrical plating, sol-gel synthesis, laser deposition, etc. The mixing of nano-sized ceramic particles is normally lengthy, expensive, and energy consuming.Ultrasonic Stirring Technology (UST) has been extensively used in purifying, degassing, and refinement of metallic melt (Jian, 2005, Khalifa, 2008, Eskin, 2002, Xu, 2004, and Meek, 2006) mainly because introducing the ultrasonic energy into a liquid will induce nonlinear effects such as cavitation and acoustic streaming. SiC nanoparticles are widely used as reinforcement particles due to their relatively good thermal and chemical stability. Ultrasonic vibration can improve the wettability between the reinforced nanoparticles and the metal matrix (Lan, 2004, Cao, 2008, and Yan, 2011), which will assist to distribute the nanoparticles more uniformly into the metal matrix. Ultrasonic cavitation in liquids causes high speed liquid jets of up to 1000 km/h. Such jets press liquid at high pressure between the particles and separate them from each other (Hielscher, 2005)."

"Coal is rapidly becoming a major alternative to oil. According to the World Coal Study Final Report, total world coal trade could approach one billion tons annually by the year 2000. To facilitate the increased production and export market potential of the coal producing countries, advancements must be made to improve the transportation systems. Coal slurry pipeline systems could play a significant role in achieving these market forecasts.There are three major components to a coal slurry system the preparation plant, the pipeline and the dewatering plant. The experience and expertise gained from the Consolidation Coal Company system in Ohio, the Black Mesa system in Arizona and ETSI's Coal Evaluation Plant demonstrate that slurry pipeline technology is proven and available to meet the coal transport challenge.The costs of transporting coal by slurry pipeline can offer significant savings, as about 70 per cent of its costs are fixed. The reverse is true for railroads, where 75 to 80 per cent of the costs vary with inflation. All forms of transport-rail, barge and pipeline-will be required to move the massive volumes of coal. Coal slurry systems can provide a viable transport alternative.IntroductionThe importance of coal as a major alternative to oil is now well known and accepted throughout the world. Increasing oil prices over the last eight years have had a serious effect on national economics, particularly in those countries that are heavily dependent on oil. Coal can replace oil as the principal fuel source which could support world economic growth over the next two decades. This is the main conclusion of the World Coal Study (WOCOL) Final Report, published in May 1980.The product of that report was a result of considerable deliberation by key industry leader s and energy experts. The underlying message of the World Coal Study is that our energy and economic problems can be faced with confidence if coal use doubles by the early 1990s and triples by 2000, and if steam coal trade expand s considerably."

"Phosphorus slag is the most heavy-tonnage waste of yellow phosphorus production, which is stored in the dump fields for many years creating ecological problems in the regions. Despite of the actions taken to utilize the slags, most of them remain in the slag disposal area. One of the relevant and priority directions is rare-earth metals production (REMs), presence of which in the phosphorus slags allows considering the latter as an acceptable raw material source. Phosphorus slags contain about 30–40 wt% of silicon dioxide, therefore they can serve as a source of production of precipitated silicon dioxide highly required in different industries.The purpose of this work is the most complete REMs recovery in the solution while leaching and subsequent processing of siliceous cake. The work shows results of researches on establishment of the chemical and phase compositions of phosphorus slags, determination of the forms of presence therein of REMs compounds, processes of phosphorus slag leaching by nitric acid and processing of produced siliceous cake by NaOH solution.Based on the data of the instrumental and chemical methods of phosphorus slag analysis, it was established that it consists of pseudowollastonite a-CaSiO3 for 90–92%. It was found out that REMs are present in it in the form of carbonate apatite Ca10(PO4)6CO3 or rare earth apatite, and La2S3 compound inclusions.Optimum parameters of phosphorus slag leaching process were selected: HNO3 concentration 7- 7.5 mol/L; L/S ratio = 2.6–3 mL/g; temperature – 50–80o?; duration – 1 h; pulp stirring – 500 rpm. Recovery of SREMs, CaO, Al2O3 and Fe2O3 into the solution were achieved at 98.0, 99.1, 99.0 and 18.8%, respectively. Presence of 10 elements of the rare earths group in the phosphorus slag was established. It was found out that recovery of almost all REMs is within ~92–99%, except for Sc and Lu – ~39% and ~28%, respectively.For the purpose of optimization of siliceous cake leaching by NaOH solution, influence of some physical and chemical parameters was studied: N?O? concentration, L/S ratio, temperature, and duration. Results of the experimental data will serve as a basis for development of the technology of complex processing of the technological waste of phosphorus industry with production of REMs concentrate and precipitated silicon dioxide."

The most common of the commercial product s are potassium chloride, potassium sulphate and potassium magnesium sulphate. The potassium content of potash is measured in units of K20 equivalent. The common grades of potassium chloride produced for agriculture average at least 60 0/0 K20 compared with approximately 50% Kp for potassium sulphate and 22% for potassium magnesium sulphate."

"Spontaneous combustion has always been a problem in coal mines and is identified mainly with the mining of low-rank coals. The liability of coals to spontaneous heating is only one of the factors in determining whether spontaneous combustion will occur. However, knowledge of the relative oxidizability of the coal is a useful factor to take into consideration when selecting new coal seams and mining methods for future mine development.Four methods (static isothermal, ignitability, adiabatic and dynamic) have been used to compare the relative liability of Canadian coal to spontaneous combustion and to investigate the mechanism of spontaneous combustion of these coals. Among these f our methods, the static isothermal method is considered to be the best indicator of the susceptibility of various coals to spontaneous combustion. Western mountain coal adsorbs more oxygen and has a higher tendency to undergo spontaneous combustion than the Harbour seam coal of Nova Scotia. It has also been observed that a higher methane content in coal will indicate a lower liability to spontaneous heating."

"Falconbridge Mine has a history of significant microseismic activity dating back to 1955. Since mid-1981, a microseismic monitoring system has been operating in the area around the No .9 Shaft hoist room located 25 m from the are zone at a depth of 1200m. Several mine wide faults dissect this area and have been shown to be microseismic-active due to mining. The microseismic monitor has been interfaced with a small dedicated personal computer and a communications device to perform routine data evaluation and to produce graphical output. The programs are described and selected result s from the monitoring program are presented.IntroductionFalconbridge Mine is located on the southeast rim of the Sudbury Basin. The nickel-copper sulphide ore zone is essentially a tabular orebody striking approximately east-west and dipping at 80 degrees north near surface and rolling to 75 degrees to 80 degree s south by the 1000 level. (Mine level number s represent the approximate depth in feet below ground surface .) This dip is maintained down to the 6000 level. The north wall is comprised of jointed norite and a faulted contact up to 1 m thick exists between the ore zone and the norite. The south wall rock is a greenstone with highly siliceous lenses and often has a faulted contact with the ore zone. No less than five mine wide faults exist, as shown in Fig. I.Mining ha s been carried out from virtually the bedrock contact to depths of 1830 m although the majority of current activity is between 900 and 1500 m below surface. A winze provides access below the 4025 level and the cage hoist room is located on the 3850 level in the north wall 25 m from the contact. Because of concern for the stability of this hoist room, there has been no mining activity within 60 m of the hoist room and by 1980 this block of ore was one of the major blocks of high-grade ore remaining in the mine . Mining of this block was originally scheduled for very late in the decade.Prior to a six-month shutdown in 1982, this mine produced approximately 450,000 tonnes of ore annually, mainly by cut and- fill techniques. Following the shutdown, annual production has been reduced to approximately 200,000 tonnes and production is now mainly by undercut and fill techniques .Mining-induced seismicity has occurred at Falconbridge Mine since at least 1955 and reviews of the microseismic problems for the periods from 1965 - 1970 and from 1971 to 1979 were made by Singh (1971) and Vongpaisal et al. (1980), respectively. The need for instrumentation was addressed by these authors. Following several large events during the spring of 1980, a decision was made to investigate existing microseismic monitors and to apply micro seismic monitoring techniques in Falconbridge Mine. Application of microseismic monitoring to Falconbridge Mine was to concentrate on the No . 9 Shaft hoist room area of the mine, particularly around the 4025 level where a large mechanized cut-and- fill stope was approaching this level. By mid - 1981, the microseismic monitor was fully installed and with in a year , a short-period seismograph and a personal computer had been added to the system."

"The objective of Part J of this paper is to identify the limitations of the traditional modelling methods and to illustrate, by example, the potential for error created by their application to complex deposits and mining situations. Part 2 describes the evolution of new, proven technology which eliminates these deficiencies and provides precise and practical alternatives. These promote the use of realistic geological and mining shapes and eliminate altogether the rectangular approximations of traditional methods.The Case for Precision ModellingIt is not the intent of this paper to promote the benefits of computer modelling per se. It is assumed that these are recognized by the mining industry in general. The concern of Part 1 is to identify, qualify and quantify (where possible) the limitations of the tractitional modelling methods. In many instances these methods continue to be applied to complex geological and mining situations for which they were never intended nor designed. The source and magnitude of the resulting errors, conflicts and inefficiencies are not always obvious, however, they can have far-reaching effects on the efficiency and profitability of mining operations.The conclusions support a rapidly growing demand by industry for practical, precise modelling technology which eliminates the deficiencies and can be applied with confidence to evaluation, design, planning and control of mine production in all situations. Part 2 describes new technology which has evolved in response to these industry pressures and has already been successfully applied to complex mining situations. This new technology can aptly be described as appropriate technology for the 1990s."

"Red Dog is one of the world’s largest zinc producing mines and a significant producer of lead and silver. While some of the operational challenges relate to the mine’s location in a remote part of Alaska, there are also challenges in the mineral separation process. Recent processing upgrades have included the installation of two M5000 IsaMills to improve the zinc regrind circuit and of one Jameson Cell to improve the pre-flotation circuit. Relatively fine grinding is required to achieve efficient mineral separation at Red Dog, but while fine grinding aids in the production of high grade concentrates, it also creates challenges in the efficient recovery of fine minerals. Over half of the lead lost to the lead circuit tailings, as well as almost half of the zinc lost to the final tailings, is in the finer size fractions (<10 µm). The high pulp density experienced in the pre-flotation and lead rougher circuits also causes significant entrainment loss of lead and zinc to the pre-flotation concentrate and of zinc to the lead concentrate. To help improve fine mineral recovery, Red Dog has recently plant tested and installed magnetic conditioning technology in the flotation circuits. The equipment aggregates fine paramagnetic sulphides and selectively increases their flotation recovery. This paper outlines the testing and positive results at Red Dog.INTRODUCTIONRed Dog is the largest zinc mine in North America and represents approximately 29% of North American zinc concentrate production. The mine is located in northwest Alaska, approximately 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 50 miles inland from the Chukchi Sea. The remote location makes the mine accessible only by air or seasonally by ocean-going barges. Red Dog is a partnership between NANA Regional Corporation Inc, the land owner and Teck Alaska Incorporated, the operator of the mine. Red Dog Ore and Mineralogy The Red Dog deposit is a rich sedimentary exhalative (sedex) zinc-lead-silver deposit. The main minerals present in order of abundance are: quartz, sphalerite, pyrite, barite and galena. Production began in 1989 with mining of the Main deposit. Between 1989 and 2012, approximately 55.6 million tonnes of ore with an average grade of 20.5% Zn, 5.6% Pb, and 97 g/t Ag was mined from the Main deposit. Subsequent to the development of the Main pit reserve, two additional open pit deposits were discovered: Aqqaluk and Qanaiyaq. The first blast in Aqqaluk occurred on June 4, 2010. As of December 31, 2014, the Aqqaluk deposit reserve is an estimated 45.7 million tonnes of ore with an average grade of 15.1% Zn, 3.9% Pb and 71 g/t Ag."
