"Fording Coal is a wholly owned subsidiary of Canadian Pacific Limited. The company was founded in 1968 to mine metallurgical coalfor export at the Fording River operations in southeast British Columbia.Today, Fording Coal Limited also operates the Whitewood mine under contract to TransAlta Utilities and the Genesee mine under a joint venture arrangement with Edmonton Power. Both these operations are located just west of Edmonton and produce subbituminous low-sulphur coal which is used for power generation. Fording also owns and operates two industrial mineral mines in the United States and is mining overburden under a lo-year contract with Syncrude Canada at Fort McMurray.As of December 1992, Fording Coal Limited owns and operates the Greenhills mine which was closed due to bankruptcy. This papers deals with the innovations and changes which have been made and those which are currently being implemented to make this operation competitive in the world export coal market. IntroductionOn December 4, 1992, following a tendering process, Fording Coal was awarded 80% controlling interest in the Greenhills mine by Trustee Arthur Andersen Inc. Assets acquired included 100010 of the land and coal leases and 80% of the major joint venture assets including all structures. The remaining 20% is owned by Pohang Steel Canada Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Pohang Iron Steel Co. of Korea. The Greenhills mine had been in continuous operation since 1983 and was finally closed due to bankruptcy of its majority owner on October 31, 1992.A permit to operate the Greenhills mine was issued by the British Columbia government on January 29, 1993, and Fording Coal Limited started mining operations in late February 1993.To return the Greenhills mine to profitability significant changes were required in workforce productivity, mining methods and equipment selection. These mine plan changes are designed to make the Greenhills operation competitive in world markets, provide longterm employment for the company's workforce and ensure that a secure supply of coal is available."

The journey toward cleaner coal-fired power generation is driven by technological improvements, more stringent regulations around greenhouse gas and other air emissions, and the potential of one of Canada?s most abundant resources. Within this context, EPCOR is leading efforts to commercialize gasification technology to produce electricity with near-zero emissions. By turning coal, oxygen, and water into synthesis gas through a gasification process ? and then capturing CO2 ? it is possible to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas and smog-related emissions. EPCOR is conducting front-end engineering and design work on an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle technology (IGCC) utility-scale plant ? in conjunction with the Canadian Clean Power Coalition ? at its Genesee site, west of Edmonton. EPCOR, the Alberta Energy Research Institute, and Natural Resources Canada have each contributed $11 million to the $33 million project. A critical element of the project features the capture of CO2, which would be piped underground for long-term sequestration, or for use in enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The combination of IGCC and CO2 sequestration, at this scale, has not been used anywhere else in the world.

A new burner rig for cyclic and hot corrosion testing of Ni-base superalloys and high-temperature coatings has been developed at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Japan. The concepts of the rig design include: use of kerosene as fuel, easy operation for materials research and multi-specimen testing capability per test run. The burner rig consists of six blocks including combustion block, corrosion-solution injection block, furnace block, specimen block, controller block and outdoor facility block. During verification testing, it was confirmed that the rig had accurate specimen temperature control within ±1? from 600 to 1100? and automated easy operation. Cyclic testing of several Ni-base superalloys was conducted. The results from 50 cycle testing indicated that a new NIMS alloy developed for 1700? class gas turbine had higher oxidation resistance than CMSX-4. This new burner rig testing capability at NIMS can be very useful for future oxidation, hot corrosion and coating durability studies.

"Exploration in most areas of Canada has to contend with problems posed by glacial overburden. In many areas exploration for gold has been based on the sampling of tills, frequently by deep overburden drilling, and analyses of heavy mineral concentrates. Notwithstanding the significant role that till geochemistry has played in the discovery of some important gold deposits over the last few years, increased appreciation of the nature of the glacial history and stratigraphy and the character of gold within till has led to the recognition of a number of ways whereby the effectiveness of exploration can be improved upon.In order for till geochemistry to be useful in exploration, a number of conditions must be fulfilled, including:1. mineralization, or alteration halo related to mineralization, subcropping at the bedrock/overburden interface;2. glacial erosion and dispersal of a recognizable signature of mineralization into the glacial sediments;3. preservation of glacial sediments containing this geochemical component (trace metal or mineral) at positions subsequently selected for sampling (normally drill sites);4. correct identification of specific till units and associated ice movement history;5. collection of adequately large and representative samples;6. appropriate sample preparation and processing;7. appropriate geochemical analyses; and8. correct data processing and interpretation.While we have no control over the first two geological conditions, and only limited control over till availability, we can control the quality and thoroughness of sampling, sample identification, sample preparation, analysis and interpretation. In particular attention needs to be focussed on obtaining a large enough sample to be adequately representative, an unbiased sample must be collected, together with appropriate sample processing, analysis, data processing and interpretation. It is considered that by modifying or extending existing approaches to gold exploration the chances of exploration success can be increased. In particular, analyses of both the heavy mineral and minus 63 µ m fractions of till is recommended because gold in till may occur in different size fractions."

"Al-Sc-Zr alloys form thermally stable L12 precipitates which provide high temperature strength. Although the overall fraction of L12 Al3Sc and Al3Zr may be increased by increasing scandium (Sc) and zirconium (Zr) content, such additions may increase primary phase fractions and do not produce desirable secondary phase morphologies. Rapid solidification techniques, such as melt spinning, increase solute atom concentration within the matrix. When the supersaturated matrix is aged, higher precipitate volume fractions at low Sc and Zr levels can be achieved improving high temperature strength. Melt spinning was used to rapidly solidify (107 k/s) a thin ribbon of Al-0.5Sc-0.4Zr at. %. The ribbon was compacted and extruded into 99.8% dense rods, and then aged using multi-step isochronal heat treatment up to 600°C. Precipitation strengthening was evaluated by ambient hardness measurement. The ambient hardness of melt-spun ribbon after precipitation hardening increased by 450 MPa (~67% increment) during isochronal heat treatment.INTRODUCTION Small Sc and Zr additions to aluminum improve strength and creep resistance above 300°C due to tri-aluminide precipitation of Al3(Sc,Zr) in L12 structures similar to ??, Ni3(Al,Ti) in nickel superalloy, but the Al3(Sc,Zr) particles have a Sc-rich core surrounded by Zr-rich shell (Figure 1). The Al3Zr shell limits atomic transport between the Al3Sc core and the matrix and reduces coherency strain. These factors reduce precipitate coarsening rate at elevated temperature (Bergner & Van Chi, 1977; Fujikawa, 1997; Knipling et al., 2011; Clouet et al., 2006).Figure 1. The process of gas diffusion through coal particles and the mathematical physical model under the third kind boundary condition was determined to obtain the rules of gas diffusion through coal particles of different sizes. The analytical solution of the equation was obtained by the Method of Mathematical Physics. The parameters of analytical solutions and the implications of parameters were analyzed. The Biot criterion (Bi) and the Fourier criterion (F0) of mass transfer can represent and reflect the features of gas diffusion field of coal particles. Moreover, the measurement method of gas diffusion coefficient and surface mass transfer coefficient is introduced and an example of measurement is given. The achievement can provide the support to prevent disasters related to methane in coal mines.

"IntroductionThe stages of development for bringing a mill into production demand that a flowsheet for the process be developed at an early stage. Detailed engineering of the mill may then proceed without duplication of engineering effort on alternative processes. In the case of gold and silver mills, several process alternatives exist which must be evaluated before the flowsheet is finally fixed. The recently developed Carbon-in-Pulp process has added to this choice.Clearly, the major factor in determining the most suitable process is the amenability of the particular ore to a given treatment. Other factors that will also influence the choice are location, climate, power and water supplies, and available capital.Gold and silver milling processes can be divided into three main types:Gravity Concentration;Flotation;Cyanidation.Combinations of the three are frequently used; i.e. flotation followed by cyanidation of the concentrate, or gravity concentration in the grinding circuit with cyanidation of the classifier overflow. The following are the salient advantages and disadvantages of the three main alternatives.Gravity ConcentrationGravity concentration is suitable for free-milling gold ores, i.e. ores in which the gold is relatively coarse and free from sulphides. It should be noted that just because an ore is high grade, it is not necessarily free milling.Gravity concentration methods include jigs, shaking tables, spirals and more recently Reichert cone concentrators. All methods exploit the density difference between gold, which has a specific gravity greater than 15, depending on how it is alloyed, and the gangue, which usually has a specific gravity range of 2.7 to 3.5.A concentrate grade of several hundred ounces per ton might be produced, but recoveries by gravity alone are generally low in comparison to other methods. For this reason, gravity circuits are usually used in combination with flotation or cyanidation circuits."

The In order to mine safely with reasonable cost, it is necessary to research the fracture characters of backfill and its matches with rock mass. Four kinds backfill with cement-tailing ratio of 0.250, 0.125, 0.100 and 0.083 respectively were tested, and basing on stress-strain curves tested, the deformation characters and fracture laws as well as the damage constitutive equations investigated with damage mechanics whose calculating results are coincided with experiment results well were proposed. The results of damage analysis show that there have different damage characters in different backfill, e. g. the lower the ratio of cement to tailings the lower the damage values when stresses reach to peak value; the lower the content of cement the more rapid in damage and the more abrupt in breakage process. In addition, using catastrophe theory, an energy model was proposed for backfill and rock mass acted each other in mechanics, and the unstable condition of the system was obtained. Research results show that the higher is the stiffness of rock mass the more stable the system, and the lower is the ratio of cement to tailings, the more unstable the system will be. Further more, according to the catastrophe model proposed, the reasonable matches between backfill and rock mass were researched, and a calculation formula that designs reasonable strength of backfill during mining was put forward. It has been proved by practice that the model and theory researched in this paper can guide filling design in mining. Several differences exist between the columns used for laboratory simulations of heap leaching and commercial heaps. Column walls support part of the weight of the ore and restrict the particle packing arrangements. Columns are typically of a diameter that is smaller than the dripper spacing to be used on the commercial heaps. The stacking practices that cause segregation and stratification on heaps are absent from columns. Intuitively, these physical differences would be expected to be the reasons behind the observed differences between column and heap leaching performance. But how can they be quantified, and what is the magnitude of the differences? Could some of these differences be built into column leaching experiments in order to better simulate commercial-scale heap leaching performance to ease the scale-up calculations from column leaching data? Alternatively, could heap construction practices be improved so that the ideal performance obtained in columns could be emulated on heaps? Data from a few heap leaching cases studies that permit direct comparisons between column and heap leaching performance is analysed, to reveal the extent of the differences in resistance to mass transfer. Discussion is provided on the implications for column and heap leaching practice, and for scale-up design procedures. INTRODUCTION Differences have been known to exist between leaching performance observed in laboratory columns and that of commercial-scale heaps. Both the heap leaching kinetics and finally achievable extent of extraction are generally found to be inferior in heaps compared to that achieved in columns. Heap leaching design engineers extrapolate the anticipated heap leaching performance by multiplying the time-axis of a column-leaching curve by a factor of about 2 and the extraction-axis by a factor of about 0.8, as explained by Jansen and Taylor (2002), Scheffel (2002), John (2011) and Scheffel, Guzmán, and Dreier (2016). The procedure is illustrated in Figure 1 by means of a hypothetical example. The solid line represents the leaching performance observed in a laboratory column, and the dashed line represents the anticipated leaching performance of a heap, extrapolated from the column leaching data using these empirical scale-up factors.

The Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) Navachab single stage SAG mill has provided an excellent setting for incremental optimization. Over the past decades, several interventions have resulted in marked improvements in specific performance; including steel ball scat removal, re-design of the mill lifters, replacement the pebble crusher and cyclone cluster, as well as the use of a vibrating screen in place of a discharge trommel. Recent initiatives now include an operating fine DMS circuit, studies on pre-crushing of the ROM feed and also fine-screening as an alternative to hydrocyclone classification. The current optimized state of the Navachab mill allows it to operate at approximately 20% higher efficiency when compared to mills of similar shell dimensions in gold mining, treating similar ore. This paper describes the systematic improvement of the SAG circuit to its current state.

Detailed as-built project schedules are necessary to close out construction projects, benchmarking, forecasting, dispute resolution, and improving cost estimates of future projects. Manual procedures for developments of as-built documentation is time consuming, involves numerous interfaces and human interventions. This paper presents computational framework that encompasses automated site data acquisition and generates schedule updates utilizing commercially available project scheduling software. The work is carried out collaboratively with a Hydro Quebec team. The site data is captured employing mobile computing using iPad® type computers and Wi-Fi. The information is directly compiled in a centralized database server. The synchronization tool is a bi-directional application and is used on servers to communicate with iPad® computers deployed onsite. The captured data is stored in Microsoft SQL® relation database that consists of 63 entities. Computer software application has been developed in Microsoft Visual Basic® (vb.net) environment for extracting the collected site data, linking the database to the as planned schedule, and generating the actual, also known as as-built schedule. The development can be utilized in automated progress reporting, evaluating future bids, generating master schedules and a wide range of efficient EVM applications.

Quest Rare Minerals Ltd. is developing their Strange Lake B Zone REE deposit located in Northern Quebec. An extensive batch bench scale testing program was launched to investigate open circuit rougher flotation performance under different conditions. The objective of the flotation study was to demonstrate the effectiveness of rejecting gangue minerals to flotation tailings while concentrating rare earth elements as well as yttrium, zirconium, and niobium into a concentrate suitable for further hydrometallurgical processing. Mineralization of interest at Strange Lake occurs within peralkaline granite-hosted pegmatites and minor aplite. The REE and high field strength element (HFSE)-bearing phases are hosted primarily in pegmatites as relatively fine-grained phases or pseudomorphs. The gangue phases comprise of quartz, feldspar, amphibole, and pyroxene. Potential ore minerals comprise predominantly of kainosite, gerenite, gadolinite, zircon, pyrochlore, and gittinsite. These complex mineralogical characteristics increase the difficulty for processing and provide a challenge for choosing the correct reagent scheme in rougher flotation. Process options including reverse flotation to reject the gangue minerals and de-sliming prior to the direct rougher flotation were investigated. Optimization trials were conducted using various reagent regimes and under different flotation conditions. Encouraging results were found using a combination of collector reagents supplied by Cytec Canada Inc.

Successful businesses see process control as an integrated engineered system, designed and built into their business models from day one. ? The integration and use of process control sets the stage for years of compounded returns. ? Has been used for years to optimizing recoveries and minimizing waste. ? However, the mining/ore extraction sector has been slow to adopt integrated process control. What is the problem? ? Most executives and engineers do not clearly understand process control when applied to mining/extraction activities. ? Common approach has been to apply generic process control strategies as a blanket cure all and wait for it to pay off. ? No central focus which results in multiple group involvement, overlap and inconsistent application of questionable technology. ? Considered a low priority until production activities commence. ? Comfort in using brute force mining methods. ? An off-the-shelf integrated under ground mining process control architecture has not until recently been available.

"This paper discusses the use of risk assessment and risk management techniques within the Australian underground coal mining industry, within the context of geotechnical risk. The industry works within a pro-active, “enabling” legislative framework, where companies and management apply a range of risk assessment tools as part of their everyday management processes. Different geotechnical risk factors and approaches are reviewed, together with application examples – ranging from mine planning and design, operations, and accident investigations.A particularly powerful resource in each of the above stages of geotechnical management is the RISKGATE system. RISKGATE is an assembled “body of knowledge” structured under different topics across the Australian coal industry, of which three topic areas address rock mechanics issues for both the underground and surface mining sector. This paper will provide an overview of RISKGATE in the context of risk-based rock mechanics applications in underground coal mining."

"An acidic chloride leach solution was generated from the treatment of an ore containing the following value elements: silver, gold, indium, gallium, copper, zinc and lead. Iron was also co-extracted into solution as a ferric chloride species. Iron extraction was a significant component of the overall acid consumption of the leaching process. The recovery of iron by solvent extraction and water stripping was investigated. Tri-butyl-phosphate (TBP) was very effective at recovering iron from the leachate. The water strip solution could be decomposed to produce ferric oxide (hematite) and hydrochloric acid for recycle via hydrothermal hydrolysis or pyrohydrolysis.INTRODUCTION The Malku Khota deposit is situated in the eastern part of the Bolivian Altiplano at elevations between approximately 3,800 and 4,580 meters above sea level (Figure 1). The project is located 98 km east-southeast of Oruro, and 85 km south of Cochabamba in a relatively remote area."

The final mechanical properties of wrought magnesium alloys are mostly controlled by microstructure and crystallographic orientation or texture. In common magnesium alloys, grain coarsening occurs during annealing process and formation of undesirable basal texture cannot be changed markedly. The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of static precipitation on microstructure and texture evolution during annealing at 250 °C after warm rolling of Mg-Al-Sn alloy. Mg-3Al-3Sn (wt. %) alloy has been designed using thermodynamic modeling software, FactSageTM, based on forming target stable and incoherent Mg2Sn precipitate within the industrial deformation temperature range. Microstructures and precipitation were investigated by optical and scanning electron microscopes and macro-texture was measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. It was found that static precipitates form in a large scale at the recrystallized grain boundaries and retards the grain growth during annealing. Slight weakening in basal texture was also observed during annealing.

The Dome Mine has been in production for nearly 100 years and throughout the years many different mining methods were used to extract the ore. An exploration program late in the 1990s outlines new resources requiring the mine to extract the rock and some previously placed backfill (alluvial sand and/or classified tailings). It is therefore imperative to separate the backfill from the rock to reduce the negative impacts of handling the backfill on the ore pass, crushers and mill processes. Separating the backfill from the ore at the source would also reduce and/or eliminate the cost of handling this waste stream. The paper will touch on the backfill removal criteria, the risks, the alternatives and the selected method, screen decks, for backfill removal at the Dome Mine. The 155549 bulk zone case study will illustrate how the screen decks are in use at the mine. The paper will also illustrate how the lessons learned and conclusions of the work done for the 155549 bulk zone were applied to the second screen deck installation for the 257260 bulk zone.

"Dynamic characteristics of frozen soil is important for the safe, effective and rapid construction in cold regions and artificially frozen engineering. In this paper, dynamic characteristics of frozen clay with various low temperature and different strain rate were studied by using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) test and numerical simulation test. Variation of dynamical parameters and dynamic stress-strain curves of frozen clay were obtained and analyzed. The results of these test show that: Frozen clay exhibits temperature effect and strain rate effect that the failure type tends from plastic failure to brittle failure with the increase of strain rate or decrease of temperature; Under impact loading, frozen clay exhibits three typical dynamic stress-strain curves as strain rate increases, and the maximum strain of frozen clay only linear increases with strain rate.INTRODUCTIONArtificial freezing technology has been widely used in the construction of underground engineering, such as the coal mine shaft, the deep foundation pit, the urban metro and subsea tunnel, etc. Research on dynamic mechanical behavior of artificial frozen soil will provide supports for these artificially frozen engineering (Xu et al. 1998; Ma 2009). However, the dynamic mechanical research on frozen soil is mainly carried out at low frequencies or small amplitudes of the waves, behavior of frozen soil under impact loads or high strain rate loads has not been made clear."

Ordered intermetallic PtSb had been synthesized by arc-melted and then sintering treatment. The electro-oxidation of formic acid on PtSb was investigated at room temperature by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The results are compared to those at a polycrystalline platinum electrode surface. It was found that PtSb intermetallic was catalytically more active than pure platinum according to the onset potential and current density. XRD and XPS technologies had been used to investigate the crystal structure and electron effect. We think formic acid decomposition on PtSb favors the reactive intermediate route and is not very much affected by the CO intermediate as compared to Pt.

The introduction of new technology in mine operations has provided real opportunities for increased efficiencies and production gains which translate into enhanced profits. Computing and network technology usage has become integrated into surface mining operations and on average these investments in technology have proven beneficial for efficiency and productivity improvements. Embracing new technologies however, does not guarantee positive results. The expectations or improvements derived through the technology must be confirmed and clarified well before implementation. Tire Pressure and Temperature Monitoring Systems are an excellent example of an existing technology that can provide full time automated performance measurements of tires operating under harsh conditions and environments. Prompt warnings or alarms signaling when a tire has exceeded operating capacities will provide savings through lowered maintenance costs and increased productivity. To truly quantify the projected savings in tire life, fuel consumption, and increased levels of production, all costs associated with the technology, both direct and indirect must be considered. Apart from the initial cost of the system implementation, ongoing maintenance and support costs must be considered as well as the costs of system integration into existing mine operations
