"The trend to drives of more than 10,000 hp on large-capacity ball and autogenous mills for increased operating efficiency has been limited by factors in the conventional drive system. A solution to this problem, using modern developments in static converter technology, is the concept of driving the mill directly without gearing using a low-speed, low-frequency synchronous motor with a cyclo-converter power supply.This paper presents various practical arrangements of mill and low-speed motors giving the specific advantages of each system. The means of controlling inrush currents on starting and of spotting by the use of variable-frequency control are outlined in general form. Several gearless ball mill drives are scheduled for start-up in European cement plants and further orders have been placed."

"Bentonite clay has been the most common binder for iron ore pellets. Although bentonite increases pellet strength and durability, it has several disadvantages. For example, its use increases the cost of pellets and decreases pellet purity due to its composition and the higher levels of flux required to meet basicity limits. Several new types of binders have been proposed to replace clay. The binders include starch, modified humic acid (MHA), and dispersants. These binders were used to pelletize a magnetite concentrate from the United States. Typical doses of each binder type were 0.05-0.1 % starch, 0.5-0.75 % MHA, and 0.05 % dispersant. At these doses, the pellets exceeded the minimum recommended values for wet drop, dry compression strength, and fired compression strength. Pellets made with the MHA and dispersants had the lowest abrasion rates of the new binders, and were comparable to pellets made with bentonite clay. In this paper, we compare the new binders, considering pellet quality and the advantages and disadvantages of each binder type.INTRODUCTIONIron ore pelletizers need binders in order to make good quality iron ore pellets. The typical binder is bentonite clay, an alumino-silicate material. Bentonite increases the ballability and strength of iron ore concentrates, but reduces pellet iron grade and reducibility. As high quality bentonites can be expensive to ship, low quality bentonites are often used at significantly higher doses – this reduces iron grade and reducibility even further. Thus, several new types of binders have been proposed to replace bentonite clay.In this paper, we present several new binders for iron ore pellets: starch and modified humic acid (MHA). These have been tested alone and in mixtures with dispersants, or else with bentonite clay. Starch, MHA and their mixtures are briefly described below."

The deformation and recrystallisation of magnesium yttrium alloys containing 0.23, 0.84 and 2.71wt% yttrium and commercially pure magnesium extrusion has been investigated at temperatures between 200 and 350°C. The alloys were produced as billets 7.5 cm diameter, solution treated at 525 °C for 8 h and extruded into 3 cm diameter bar at 390°C. Channel die compression was employed to deform the samples at a strain rate of 1x10-3s-1. For the 0.23 wt% yttrium alloy and the pure magnesium, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) occurred at all temperatures and the amount of DRX increased as the temperature was raised. In the alloys containing 0.84 and 2.71 wt% yttrium DRX was almost completely suppressed at all temperatures. The absence of DRX in the 0.84 and 2.71 wt% yttrium alloys was accompanied by a decrease in the ductility, except at 350°C the highest deformation temperature. It was observed that this increase in ductility was accompanied by a reduction in deformation twinning and the initiation of pyramidal slip. This work highlights the important role that DRX plays in enhancing the ductility of magnesium alloys.

Produced by the conventional TIG welding CMSX-4 welds had been studied. It was demostrated that microstructure of welds depended on filler materials, welding parameters and joint design. Epitaxial solidification of CMSX-4 clad deposits produced a directionally solidified structure while welding with the similar filler material. Defects free clad welds were obtained by TIG welding without preheating using similar and dissimilar filler materials.

"IntroductionA STRIKING FEATURE of the past twenty years has been the application of organized scientific and industrial research to problems of national defence and security and to the development of our natural resources. It has been shown that effective research improves public health, increases the productivity of land, makes mineral wealth available, and increases the efficiency and productive capacity of industry. Alberta is a region bounteously provided with a variety of natural resources, and the Province has entered into a period of unprecedented industrial development. There is, surely, a great opportunity to bring scientific research to bear •on problems associated with the development of these natural resources.I propose to spend a little time discussing the term 'research', indicating something of the various types of research and those fields which appear to •be the particular responsibility of government bodies. It seems logical, also, to outline the course of development .of industrial and scientific research in the English-speaking world during the past twenty-odd years.Research is investigation, examination, or enquiry, and involves the application of human thought, and actions, to the unfolding of new knowledge. That knowledge may assume a variety of forms. Fundamental knowledge may be new facts related to some form of matter, to motion, space, thought, and so on. Those engaged in applying the natural sciences have no monopoly on research as this term is equally valid for those engaged in obtaining, sorting, relating, and interpreting the facts of history, literature."

"Abstract—Detailed oxygen isotope mapping of rhyolites in and around the Kidd Creek mine indicates that the orebodies are associated with relatively low (<12‰) whole rock values that extend up to 200 m laterally from ore. The zone of low d18O values is overlain stratigraphically by a carapace of higher (>13‰) values that extends up to 1.5 km laterally from and 300 m to 500 m above ore. Immediately above the stratigraphically highest orebody this carapace is cut by a zone of lower d18O values extending from the ore zone. Zones of higher d18O values also occur in massive rhyolite bodies that occur in the footwall of the orebodies.The zone of low d18O values partly coincides with a Na2O depletion anomaly associated with hydrothermal alteration, except that the Na2O depletion anomaly has a greater lateral extent, and the low d18O anomaly extends farther into the stratigraphic hanging wall. These data suggest that d18O mapping may detect hanging wall alteration above massive sulfide bodies more effectively than conventional lithogeochemistry. Zones of high d18O values, which define zones through which large quantities of low-temperature hydrothermal fluids have passed, may also have usefulness in exploration.Oxygen isotope variations at Kidd Creek record three stages of a hydrothermal system that evolved in temperature with time, as follows: (1) an early, low-temperature event that produced rocks with high d18O values, (2) a high-temperature event that produced rocks with lower d18O values, and (3) a later, low-temperature event that also produced rocks with high d18O values. The high d18O signature of the massive rhyolite was recorded during early-stage, low-temperature (<200°C) alteration, and was probably preserved owing to decreases in permeability associated with low-temperature silicification. "Collector and frother are commonly used to induce the floatability of valuable minerals in flotation plants. These reagents are usually distributed down a flotation bank or sometimes added in a single location at the top of the bank. A review of the literature and some experimental results obtained from laboratory and full scale trials indicate that the way flotation reagents are distributed down a flotation bank may influence the flotation response of coarse particles. The paper summarizes these observations which show that the distribution of reagents is a potential tuning variable for process optimization.IntroductionFlotation is in many cases the only way to concentrate sulphide and some oxide minerals. Flotation is a concentration process that uses particle surface composition to induce the selectivity by mean of hydrophobic reagents. The influence of particle size on flotation was firstly analyzed in the 50's1·2 and intensively investigated in the 70's, early 80's and 90's3-18. Most of the observed results show the existence of an optimum flotation size range9 whose recovery is not significantly influenced by a reduction of collector dosage""18. This result brought the idea of using a small portion of the total collector dosage at the top of a rougher bank and to distribute the remaining through the end of the bank to ensure sufficient collection of the coarse particles that need more hydrophobic coverage to attach to air bubbles and be lifted to the surface.This paper discusses the idea of using the distribution of reagents down a flotation bank to tune the operation of the process. Unlike the literature on the effect of reagents (collectors, frother...) dosage that is dense, little attention has been put on the distribution of reagents in a flotation bank. Although research on this subject has not been pushed very far, some operators have recognized the potential of a strategic addition of reagents down a flotation bank19. Except for a few exceptions, the proportions of the reagents to be distributed down a flotation bank are decided according to operator's experience instead of process analysis in relationships with particle size. This paper recalls observations made by different researchers that lead to the idea of using the distribution of reagents as a tuning variable for the flotation process. The paper does not present a detailed analysis or optimization scheme for tuning the distribution of reagents, but analyzes some plant and laboratory results with a view toward the development of a testing methodology and ultimately a validation or rejection of the idea."

"Bioleach testing and piloting was conducted on refractory gold sulphide concentrate from Austin Gold Venture in Nevada during 1988. The objective of the test programme was to determine the technical and commercial viability of bioleaching as a concentrate pretreatment step prior to gold extraction by cyanidation. Baseline CIL cyanidation typically resulted in < 20% gold extraction from the Austin concentrate. Bioleaching enhanced gold extraction up to 95% using conventional CIL techniques. This paper summarizes the bioleach test programme and results, including pilot plant studies onsite, and describes the commercial design details for a possible retrofit of the Austin flotation tailings leach circuit to accommodate 20 tpd and 40 tpd capacity concentrate bioleach facilities.INTRODUCTIONBioleach testing on a refractory carbonaceous sulphide concentrate from Austin Gold Venture (AGV), was initiated in late 1987 as part of an ongoing programme at Austin to investigate alternatives to concentrate smelting. Preliminary batch biooxidation tests at Coastech indicated that over 90% gold extraction by carbon-in-leach (CIL) cyanidation of the bioleach residue could be achieved, compared with less than 20% gold extraction on untreated concentrate by similar CIL processing.Subsequently, a more rigorous laboratory study was undertaken at Coastech to establish continuous biooxidation operating criteria on a bench scale. The objective of continuous testing in the laboratory was to provide confirmation of enhanced CIL response based on continuous bioleach products and to determine key process operating and design parameters for pilot testing. The success of the laboratory test program led to the installation of a mobile pilot plant at Austin Gold Venture. The plant was operated by Coastech and AGV during 1988 to provide scaleup data and design criteria for commercial design and feasibility analysis. Based on pilot plant operating data, a detailed commercial bioleach plant was designed as a possible retrofit to the existing 1000 tpd CIL plant. Capital and operating costs were estimated to provide a commercial feasibility study of bioleaching as an oxidative pretreatment for Austin refractory concentrate."

The Codelco Chile El Teniente Division Caletones Smelter has an objective to smelt 1,250,000 tonnes per year of copper concentrate. This is a great challenge for the smelter facilities and particularly for the acid plants. The analysis ensuring that there are no obstacles to achieve the production capacity was of great importance. Therefore a series of activities were undertaken as well as studies dedicated to reach the target. This paper presents work focused on a fluid dynamic study, translated in an operation methodology of integrated handling of the smelting and converting gases with the objective to optimize the gas flow and S02 concentration. The optimization should be done employing the current installations, equipment and instrumentation and/or minor modifications. In the first part of the work the condition of the instrumentation involved in the gas handling was checked, improvements determined and the corresponding corrective actions were carried out. The proposed operation method consists of operation of the Cleaning Gas Plant 2 (TC&apos; s gases) and operation of Gas Cleaning Plant 1 (the remaining gas plus the gases from CPS). The implementation of the operation method involves the modification of the valve of the gas into the duct to plant 1 from On to Off to modulate flow. After modification a three days test was carried out. To evaluate the tests, a "Sulphur Capture" indicator was used. During the test the behaviour of the effluent treatment plants was closely examined. No problems or unusual operating conditions were observed. The reduced flow of gas to Gas Cleaning Plant No. 1 permitted the start up of the 2nd test day treating most of the gas received by Gas Cleaning Plant No. 2. The operation was carried out with the limitation not to increase the effluent pond level, which was maintained constant.

At one end of the spectrum is the policy of avoiding all breakdowns by replacement and preventive routines before failure, such as the airlines policy. At the other end of the spectrum is the policy of minimal routines and the acceptance of a breakdown as a prelude to a repair.The complexity and cost of maintenance warrants the appointment of a maintenance manager of senior status. Within the origination, there are a number of activities that can be specialized to improve effectiveness. Among these are the inspectors' activity, the establishment of improvement routines, the planning of repair tasks, maintenance engineering research and value analysis.The maintenance system is the mechanical aid to assist the staff in the implementation of the policy. It is designed to facilitate planning to make the best use of the resources. It provides information to identify areas where managerial action is required to make improvements. The job ticket is the basis of most systems."

Abstract - Metalliferous precipitates from submarine hydrothermal discharges have been investigated at four inshore locations off Milos in the Hellenic Volcanic Arc. The fine fraction of the sediments shows considerable variability in the concentrations of elements frequently associated with hydrothermal activity. Manganese varies from 30 ppm to 2500 ppm, encompassing the entire range of values found off Santorini also in the Hellenic Arc. Iron occurs in lower concentrations than off Santorini and Yali, while other elements often associated with hydrothermal activity such as Pb, Zn, As, and Cu also show enrichments in sediments from the hydrothermal vent areas. Selective leaching studies have shown that most elements are variably distributed between the different phases of the sediments but with enriched Pb, Zn, and Mn mainly in easily soluble secondary phases. Hydrothermal inputs are strongest at Palaeochori Bay, less at Voudia Bay and lowest at the Airport Springs and Rivari. The weathering of sulfide and possibly other orebodies is also thought to contribute to some of the elements enriched, while background concentrations are largely supplied from detrital sources.

I TAKE it that the papers presented tonight on the subject of Reconstruction, as regards both gold and base-metals, are intended primarily to stimulate discussion of this important subject and, in regard to base-metals in particular, cannot in any manner be considered as a policy or plan to be followed as a panacea for all the ills which are bound to beset the industry when peace is declared. A famous cook-book written by a Mrs. Beeton contained a recipe for jugged hare which began with the instruction, "First catch your hare". To date, we have not caught the hare of victory and it may seem to many that any thought, energy, or effort devoted to the problem of reconstruction which will in any way impede the acceleration of the chase after victory will leave us open to the charge of being derelict in our duty as citizens. Much of our present trouble is due, however, to our lack of preparation for war in time of peace, and it follows that it is of equal importance in our national economy to prepare for peace in time of war. Most of us here tonight have vivid and sad memories of the chaos in the metal mining industry following the Great War of 1914-1918. In our own industry, mining, smelting and refining of nickel and copper, it was not a problem of absorbing the men who returned. There were only some three hundred who came back to the Mining and Smelting Division, and these men were all given their former jobs without any apparent difficulty. They were rehabilitated gradually due to the fact: that some of these men did not return for a year after the Armistice was signed. The numbers of men involved in the present conflict are much greater. We have to date in the armed forces upwards of 3,000 men enlisted from our employ.

"When Texas Gulf Sulphur Company discovered the Kidd Creek ore body in 1964, a crash program began almost immediately for the design and construction of a modern concentrator. It was necessary to mill two distinct ore types; one containing copper and zinc, the other lead, silver and zinc minerals. The final concentrator design was to handle 9,000 tons of ore daily in three circuits. One circuit was to treat copper-zinc and another lead-zinc ore exclusively on a permanent basis. A central circuit was designed with adequate flexibility to treat either of the above ore types in accordance with planned mining schedules. Ecstall Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary, now operates the mine and concentrator complexes for Texas Gulf. The mine is located 15 miles north of Timmins and the concentrator 15 miles to the north-east along Highway 101. The ore is hauled from the mine to the concentrator over a 17-mile railroad. Initial milling operations began in November, 1966.1 - ABSTRACTThis paper deals with bulk reagent handling at the Kidd Creek concentrator. The reagent section at Kidd Creek has operated excellently since milling began in 1966. The bulk handling techniques are satisfactory. They have contributed substantially to good working conditions, economical practices and metallurgical efficiencies. The bulk handling features described should be considered in existing and proposed concentrators."

"In May 1936, Pamour started producing gold by cyanidation of flotation concentrates, and in 1939 was milling about 1, 600 tons per day.Refining records dating from 1939 show two oil-fired furnaces in use, (Rockwell type 46 11 x 29 11 inside oval shell).Refining time averaged 7. 83 hours during the year 1939, indicating a complete refining shift of about 9. 33 hours. That year appears to be characteristic of the period with regard to time required and results obtained.For that year total fineness (gold + silver) of the bars averaged 940 (approx.), but it frequently dropped below this figure, sometimes far below.Furnace lining life varied widely from three to seven or more months. Sillimanite was the standard lining but Mullfrax 41 was frequently used.For many years refining practice remained practically unchanged, and in 1960 procedure still consisted essentially of mixing a flux(% Composition Borax 41, Silica 11, Soda-Ash 11, Nitre 15, Mn02 22) with cyanidation precipitate in the ratio of l. 2 to l and heating to a medium heat (yellowishred, 2000° F) with a low flame for a long time. Time required was about 10. 5 hours per refining. Results were still much as detailed above.At this time it was decided to revise refining procedure, in an effort to shorten refining time and obtain consistently good bullion fineness."

"The Cerro Verde copper-molybdenum porphyry mine, majority owned and operated by Freeport- McMoRan Copper & Gold, is located 30 km southwest of Arequipa Peru. The concentrator, which produces copper and molybdenum concentrates, started operating in late 2006 with a 108,000 tpd design capacity, processing primary sulfide ore (mainly chalcopyrite and molybdenite). Plant capacity was recently increased to 120,000 tpd. The comminution circuit consists of one 60” x 113"" primary crusher, four MP-1000 secondary crushers in closed circuit with dry screens, four 2.4m x 1.6m High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) in closed circuit with wet screens, and four 7.3m x 11m gearless ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones. The HPGR circuit is fed by the Secondary Crushing circuit product at a T80 of 35 millimeters, and the HPGR circuit product feeds the Ball Mill circuit at a T80 of 3000 microns.This paper describes operating experiences with HPGRs during these first four years highlighting improvements in operating practices and presentation of data regarding operational efficiencies, also discussed are the primary benefits provided by HPGRs such as production of micro fractured particles, reduced ore Bond Work Index, and reduced power consumption. Cerro Verde represents the first installation of HPGRs in both the copper industry and large scale hard rock mining."

The hydrogen embrittlement and stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior of an a -titanium alloy and its two kinds of welding samples have been investigated. The results show that this alloy has very low susceptibility to SCC, and the values of Kiscc for the alloy are 46.4 MPa ? m&apos; 65.86 MPa ? mu2 in the direction of T-L and L-T, respectively. The scanning electron fractographs show transgranular and quasi-cleavage fracture. The hydrogen embrittlement results show that the notch sample of the alloy is not sensitive to hydrogen, but the electro-beam welding and diving-arc welding samples are sensitive.

"TOF-SIMS (Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry) was used to detect collectors sorbed onto the surface of mineral particles in concentrate and tailings samples from the Brunswick, Matagami and Kidd Creek concentrators. This technique uses ion beams from either Cs or Ga sources to sputter the particle surface, a method which reduces fractionation of the collector molecule during sampling.In the Brunswick Zn circuit, sphalerite particles lost to the scavenger tails had less amyl xanthate and isobutyl xanthate compared to sphalerite recovered to the Zn final concentrate. Xanthates were detected on the surface of sphalerite particles floating to the CuPb final concentrate.At Matagami, significantly more isopropyl xanthate and isobutyl dithiophosphate were detected on sphalerite recovered to the Zn final concentrate, compared to sphalerite lost in the Zn rougher tails.In the Zn circuit of Kidd Creek, sphalerite lost to the tails had on average ten times less xanthate compared to sphalerite recovered into the Zn final concentrate. Xanthate was also detected on the floated pyrite particles. In addition to isobutyl xanthate, amyl xanthate was also detected on the floated sphalerite and pyrite particles.This preliminary investigation has (a) demonstrated the ability of TOF-SIMS to detect individual collectors on particle surfaces from plant samples and (b) shown that TOF- SIMS is an excellent tool, complimentary to TOF-LIMS, in establishing the surface chemistry of minerals as related to mineral processing."

"In December 1991, the GRAHM (Groupe de Recherche sur Jes Applications de L'informatique a L'industrie Minerale), of Laval University started a KBAC (Knowledge Based Automatic Control) grinding project with Falconbridge Ltd. The project was shifted to the Kidd Creek concentrator in the summer of 1992, with the first phase involving the collection of data by GRAHM and Falconbridge personnel for the construction and tuning of a dynamic simulator. This grinding circuit dynamic simulator known as DYNAFRAG was used to assess various control strategies, with a PID-based strategy being selected for ease of installation on a Foxboro II A DCS.The ""B"" primary grinding circuit was chosen for the initial strategy development, which is one of three parallel divisions. The KBAC project was successfully completed in November 1994, with subsequent modifications being implemented by Kidd Creek staff.This paper summarizes, the current control strategy, the project costs, and the realized benefits. Some of the problems which were encountered with the initial installation, and the subsequent modifications are also dealt with in this paper.2.0 IntroductionIn the summer of 1992, the GRAHM of Laval University and Falconbridge Ltd. started a project to design a control strategy for the ""B"" grinding circuit at the Kidd Creek Division. Between 1992 and 1994 several papers have been written to describe the control objectives, the methodology followed, and some initial results (Flament, 1994A, 1994B). Since then, however, the control objectives changed, and several improvements were made to the circuit. In particular, maximizing tonnage was no longer a priority, a variable speed drive pump was installed on the cyclone feed, the ball mill power was lowered, and the geometry of the cyclones changed. As a consequence, the control strategy was revised. Table 1 summarizes the historical developments on the ""B"" division grinding control."

Al though infrequent during the early years of prcxiuction, these occurrences did result in major damage and lost time injuries. 'As the mine exparrled and developed to further depths, sulphide dust explosions occurred on a more frequent basis. Incomplete ventilation se:rvices, required to exhaust the affected areas, caused frequent delays resulting in lower prcxiuction rates due to the time required to ventilate the affected areas of the mine. CUrrent procedures to minimize the effects of secon:iacy dust explosions evolved from practical suggestions arrl examining methcx:ls other mines have developed to cope with the problem. Procedures and regulations to protect errployees from exposure to hazards of sulphur dioxide are time consuming, expensive and counter prcxiuctive in their present fonn. This paper describes the history of secon:iacy sulphide dust explosions at the Ruttan Mine and the methcx:ls and proced.ures currently in place to minimize and contain the effects of dust explosions.
