Abstract - Aggregates (sand, gravel, and crushed stone) are low unit-cost products extracted in very large volumes for the construction of buildings, roads, and other infrastructure essential to modern society. Because of their low unit value, transportation costs are a key factor in resource economics, and deposits are commonly developed close to market (i.e., close to towns and cities, or along low-cost transportation corridors). This proximity results in potential conflict with residents over land use, disturbance, and pollution. Management of aggregate resources in Alberta is examined in the light of resource geology and distribution, and governance. A case history of development of the Calahoo-Villeneuve deposit is described, and the conflicts between residents and developers that led to establishment of an Area Structure Plan (ASP) are explored. The plan sets limits to, but at the same time safeguards, resource extraction, and defines terms for compensation to residents through a voluntary levy on production (Community Enhancement Fund). This fund is used to support community activities and to pay for a groundwater monitoring program. The ASP is examined within the context of the "Seven Questions to Sustainability" as set out by Mining,Minerals and Sustainable Development-North America (2002). It is concluded that the ASP, for the most part, provides a good model for conflict resolution and sustainable resource development, which could usefully be applied in other jurisdictions. The ASP was developed at a municipal level, and adoption at a provincial level would aid sustainable development of aggregate resources across the province.

"Abstract-The Amalgamated Kirkland gold deposit is located at Kirkland Lake, Ontario, within the Archean Abitibi Greenstone belt of the Canadian Shield. It lies on a fault or "break", termed the Cyprus Break, which is a splay off a regional structure termed the Cyprus-Battle Mountain Break. The Cyprus Break merges with the Cyprus - Battle Mountain Break above the -250 m level, as it was not encountered in shallow drilling or surface exploration. These structures lie 1.5 km south of the 727 000 kg (23 million ounce) Kirkland Lake Main Break and 0.5 km north of the 872 000 kg (30 million ounce) Larder Lake Break.The deposit is hosted by alkalic Timiskaming Group volcanic and sedimentary rocks which are overthrust by older Larder Lake Group tholeiitic and komatiitic flows along the Larder Lake Break. Timiskaming syenitic intrusives, similar to the host rocks for the Kirkland Lake Main Break gold deposit, intrude both suites.The Amalgamated Kirkland deposit consists of lode-style gold mineralization which is mainly hosted by altered and pyritized Timiskaming trachytic volcanics which wedge out or thin at depth, between two sedimentary units. The intersection of the Cyprus - Battle Mountain and Cyprus Breaks, in conjunction with the westward plunge of the volcanic wedge, appears to control the westerly plunge of the Amalgamated Kirkland deposit at approximately 50º.Mineralization is characterized by blue-gray brecciated and "wormy" quartz-ankerite veins which contain up to 10% fine-grained pyrite and, in decreasing order of abundance, minor galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, molybdenite and visible gold. The sulfides and gold commonly occur along fractures and wallrock inclusions within the veins. Native gold occurs as fine pinpoints distributed in 1-mm to 5-mm size clusters of up to ten or more grains.The auriferous veins occur within a quartz-ankerite-sericite-pyrite alteration assemblage which is enveloped by a broader zone of ankerite-sericite±hematite±quartz-pyrite alteration up to 60 m wide. This latter assemblage overprints the regional greenschist-facies chlorite-calcite assemblage.The Amalgamated Kirkland property has had a long history of exploration activity beginning with the first discovery of mineralization in 1911 on the Hunton Shaft claim located in the northeast corner of the property. Since that time various prospecting, mapping, trenching, geophysical surveys and diamond drilling programs have concentrated on either carbonate zones along the Larder Lake Break or quartz veins along the northern side of the property in association with complex trachyte flows and syenite dikes.Battle Mountain Canada Inc. located the Cyprus - Battle Mountain Break through a prospecting, trenching and geophysical program in 1989. Drilling by Battle Mountain and Cyprus Canada under the surface showing, coupled with several revisions to the structural interpretation of the Cyprus - Battle Mountain and Cyprus Breaks, resulted in delineation of the Amalgamated Kirkland deposit. Location of an auriferous structure through basic surface exploration within 1 km of a world-class orebody demonstrates both the subtle nature of Archean gold deposits and the potential for finding new mineralization in heavily prospected camps."

The effectiveness of two types of powder used in long-wall slashing was compared. The evaluation of the results can serve as a good example of how the application of statistical methods to underground test data can help to minimize the number of tests to be carried out. The conclusions are stated concisely, including a definite assessment of the reliability of the tests. Introduction AN assignment at the Algom Nordic mine called for a performance comparison between 70 per cent Cilgel B and 75 per cent Dygel in longwall stope slashing, particularly taking into account, in both cases, the build-up of bootlegs as dependent on hole deviation. Stopes were usually 8 to 10 ft. high and inclined at about 17 degrees. Starting from a raise, they were widened by consecutive longwall slashes to 60 ft., and, al-lowing for drift pillars, were approximately 300 ft. in length along the incline.

ASTM E2905 describes a two-part standard for electromagnetic methods for preparation and examination of ring gear teeth in the mining sector for SAG and Ball Mill ring gear drives, including pinions? particularly on the addendum, dedendum, and root areas. This practice addresses the need to detect surface breaking flaws electronically and to have the ability to accurately size any surface breaking cracks found on cast and forged SAG and ball mill ring gear and pinion teeth faster and more effectively than other methods. Eddy-current surface arrays are seeing increasing use throughout the industry for the detection of surface breaking flaws in conducting materials. Example applications include examinations of pipelines, bridges, engines, aerospace structures, and any conducting material for surface breaking flaws including cracks. In addition, model-based methods are being used to size cracks accurately found in the addendum, dedendum, and the root of SAG and ball mill girth gear teeth. As visual interpretation of a surface breaking discontinuity on gear teeth is the normal analysis, the colors and 3D images that are provided with this technique, help with visualization and therefore are absolutely invaluable in such circumstances. This practice will help to standardize the use of this nondestructive testing approach.

In this study, a physics based model has been presented, considering the growth of the thermally grown oxide (TGO) layer on the bond coating of a thermal barrier coating. Using diffusion equations, a model has been developed to physically describe the oxidation process. The mathematical equations representing the diffusion formulations have been solved numerically. The computed results show the depletion of Al in the bond coating as it diffuses both towards the super-alloy substrate and towards the TGO produced in between the bond coating and the ceramic TBC top layer.

"The development and industrial applications of magnetic liners have been around for decades. A Swedish company SKEGA first introduced the rubber magnetic liner, and then followed by the Chinese metal magnetic liners. Traditionally, both liners were used in secondary and regrind ball mills, especially for ores containing magnetic materials. Mostly steel balls or equivalent forged balls, usually below 60 mm in diameter, were used as grinding media. With the development of mineral resources over the years, SAG mills and larger ball mills have become the dominating components for comminution circuit design globally. Due to the larger ball mills and thus larger grinding balls (up to 80 mm) especially in non-ferrous metal industry, the application of magnetic liners has been very limited. Based on the new development of materials, the HMR Group Limited has been exploring new designs of magnetic liners which led to the invention of the Nano Steel Magnetic Liner (NSML). Recently, NSML had a successful application in a 5.5m x 6.5m ball mill with 80 mm balls at the Erdenet Copper Mine in Mongolia. Although the first set of liner had a service life of 12 months, the design of the second set was modified and improved to accommodate the operating conditions, which is expected to reach least 24 months service life. The original manganese steel liner only had about 8 months liner life.1. IntroductionMineral processing is an essential operation for the development and utilization of mineral resources. The effective concentration of various useful minerals depends on sufficient liberation of the mineral particles in the ore. The crushing and grinding process such as ball milling are the most common way to achieve proper liberation size. Mill liner is an eternal topic for the operations, not only because it protects the equipment, but also affects the mill grinding efficiency and availability. In recent years, magnetic mill liners have been developed that can easily meet the production targets with numerous benefits, such as zero maintenance, reducing specific energy consumption and improving grinding efficiency."

"What is now known as the 'Waite section' of the property of Waite Amulet Mines, Limited, was originally the Waite-Ackerman-Montgomery mine. It includes a group of twenty-eight claims lying on either side of the Duprat-Dufresnoy township line, and about 8 miles north-northwest of Noranda, Quebec. ,The original discovery of ore on the property was made by Thomas Montgomery in Block Q, Duprat township, and was staked by him on behalf of himself, I. C. Waite, and C. H. Ackerman, in the summer of 1925. The property was optioned late in 1925 to N. A. Timmins who, after trenching and drilling the deposit, sold his 85 per cent interest to Noranda Mines, Limited. Early in 1927, a company known as Waite-Ackerman-Montgomery Mines, Limited, was formed and shaft sinking and development undertaken. Production commenced in August, 1928, ·and continued tJ May, 1930, when, owing to falling metal prices, shipment of direct smelting ore was stopped. Development of the mine by shaft sinking, drifting, and drilling continued until March, 1932, when owing to the prolonged low price of metals, the property was closed down. In September, 1933, an amalgamation with Amulet Mines, Limited, was effected, the new company being called Waite Amulet Mines, Limited. Early in 1937 operations were resumed, first by direct shipments to the smelter and later by aerial tramway to the Amulet mill. Operations have been continuous up to the present time, reaching an average of 720 tons a day milled for the year 1940. Production during the initial period (1928-1930) amounted to 75,811 tons, having an average grade of 7 .11 per cent copper, 4.47 per cent zinc, and 0.03 oz. gold and 0.65 oz. silver per ton. During the second period (1937 to end of 1946) , 1,060,524 tons, having an average grade of 4.53 per cent copper, 2.97 per cent zinc, and 0.03 oz. gold and 0.65 oz. silver per ton, were produced."

Tamano Refinery started its operation in 1972 with the cathode production capacity of 84,000 tons per year. After several expansions, the production capacity increased to 228,000 tons per year in 2001. In this paper, we are introducing our next expansion projects starting October 2006. The project expands the production capacity of cathode from 228,000 tons to 260,000 tons per year. The main modification of this project is the conversion to the ISA process and the installation of additional seventy-two cells in the No.2 Tankhouse. The No.1 Tankhouse remains the same, using the conventional process. Half of our starting sheet cells are converted to commercial cells. The other expansions are to enlarge our purification plant. And the incidental facilities are enlarged, for example, circulation tanks, heat exchangers, filtration system, etc. Finally, this paper describes those improvements to our refinery performance and preparing for future expansions.

These guidelines are applicable to public companies and their consultants reporting diamond exploration results.In respect of these guidelines, Diamond Exploration Results are results derived from the initial activities undertaken to investigate a diamond bearing prospect or deposit, to generate tonnage, grade and value estimates that cannot be classified as a Mineral Resource or Mineral Reserve. Falling asleep at the wheel of a moving vehicle is not only dangerous but avoidable. It is implicated in up to 30% of all road fatalities in general and up to 65% of mining incidents involving haulage trucks. These types of crashes normally result in serious injury and/or fatality due to the lack of breaking that occurs. However, when a 300 tonne haul truck has a sleep related crash it is not only the safety of the driver that has a high price but also the commercial impact on the mines? productivity and efficiency. We have been developing our ASTiD technology which stands for the Advisory System for Tired Drivers to seamlessly integrate in to Modular Mining?s Dispatch system to provide real-time early warning fatigue risk management. The benefits being driver shift optimisation, sustained productivity and of course less accidents. By monitoring the drivers alertness levels in real-time using ASTID, the Dispatcher becomes empowered to make critical, management decisions that will ultimately prevent serious injury or loss of life and the driver gets to stop when he needs to and not just when he is supposed to. This paper shows how this integrated solutions works.

An extensive research is being carried out on the shaft furnace operation in order to minimize down-times and reduce operational cost. The need to increase the scrap percentage on the charging mix, together with the need of cheaper spare parts has led to the investigation of alternative materials for the burner system on the shaft furnace. This system consists of a burner block and a flame holder. Traditionally these items are constructed either from SiC ? oxide bonded or SiC-nitride bonded. A lot of problems have been confronted over the past 8 years of operation. Usually, large cracks are formed on both flame holders and burner blocks. This resulted in leakage of combustion gases to the back of the lining and a quick erosion of it. Additionally, the burner blocks suffer from chemical erosion, due to the increased amount of scrap used in the charging mix and the presence of slag inside the furnace. Alternative materials such as stainless steel for the flame holder and alumina-chromia refractory for the burner block have been tested in terms of life-time and resistance on chemical erosion. Furthermore, additional changes have been made on the burner block design in order to alter the flame shape and improve the scrap melting operation.

Interactions between A356 aluminum (Al-Si alloy) and dense fused silica (FS) riser tubes used for low-pressure casting of aluminum alloys were evaluated using a sessile drop approach. The tubes have a short service life, but cost and thermal shock resistance make them an effective solution. The main problem encountered during use is the reaction of aluminum with silica to form alumina and silicon, which causes failure. Tests have been conducted on as-fired (uncoated) and modified (coated) tubes. Experiments were carried out in a horizontal furnace at 1225°C under argon to minimize the effect of the aluminum oxide on the interactions at the alloy-silica interface. Images of the drop were acquired and contact angle values were estimated for uncoated and coated samples, but no significant differences in the contact angles were observed. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the presence of cracks at the interface between the reaction zone and the unreacted silica. The presence of reaction products (silicon in the reacting alloy and aluminum in a reaction zone between the alloy and the unaffected silica) has been confirmed using energy dispersive spectroscopy. A two layer coating system was found to be effective in reducing penetration of the aluminum alloy.

Dust from flue gas cleaning systems at iron and steel production is frequently considered as a waste problem, but it is actually a potential raw material source. By using a technology like the oxyfuel based OXYFINES technique, it can be melted into a suitable form. The product from this processing, however, needs to meet the requirements of a recyclable raw material, here particularly a top-charged blast furnace feed. The present work has been focused on characterization of the product produced from these dusts by OXYFINES technology. The investigation has been carried out on samples of processed dusts from a European integrated steel mill. It was done by means of chemical analysis, density measurement, light optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive spectroscopy, and micro indention hardness measurement. Special attention was paid to the presence of zinc, an element that might be harmful while recycling the material (e.g., in a blast furnace). The results show that the product contains four different regions with different morphologies and properties in the material, which are discussed in detail. The overall conclusion is that by processing the dusts in this way, a raw material suitable for recycling in a blast furnace can be obtained.

"E. Joe We have been working for some years on the elimination ofCANMET thiosulphates from solutions as a means of protecting ground water and fish streams. Alot of these thiosulphates result from the mill use of S02. Is there any possibility that thiosulphates will be generated by this process?Reply I don't know the answer to your question. I can speculate that there is no question that when one adds SO2 and air to a sulphide pulp one generates a host of unsaturated poly¬cyanates. I unfortunately cannot remember the reactions which arise in the cyanide destruction scheme. I think that if thiosulphate was generated the process wouldn't work. It is not oxidizing enough to destroy the cyanide.R. Wagner Would you comment on the actual cost/ton at the Scottie goldPamour mine concentrator? Would $2.50/ton be typical or is thisPorcupine just a ball park figure.Reply We wouldn't disclose Scottie's costs even if we knew them. I depends on the amount of cyanide and thiocyanate in the effluent. I have given you a hypothetical case. With the conditions stipulated the figures I Have given are realistic.K. Konigsmann I do not believe the use of S02 adds significantly to the thio Noranda Mines salt problem Certainly we use SO2 in many of our mills and thio-salt levels in a number of them haven't changed whether we use or don't use S02. For instance, Orchan and Matagami mills treating the same ore side by side in which one was using S02 and the other wasn't, the thio-salt level was virtually the same in both pulp streams. In the case of Brunswick where alot of SO2 is used (20 tons/day) there is a thio-salt problem but it is relatively insignificant.Reply Thank you for that comment. These standard practices provide more detailed guidance than that containedin the August 20, 2000 CIM Standards on Mineral Resources and Reserves. On November 14,2004 CIM Council adopted an update to the CIM Definition Standards to reflect the moredetailed guidance available and effect certain editorial changes required to maintain consistencywith current regulations. This version of the CIM Definition Standards includes further editorialchanges required to maintain compatibility with the new version of National Instrument 43-101which is expected to become law at the end of 2005. The Ekati Safety Guarantee is a conversation that has been taking place at Ekati for the last two years. It is a challenging, confronting, inspiring conversation which encourages people to see and pursue the possibility of guaranteeing that nobody who works at Ekati will be seriously injured or killed at work. The conversation takes us out of the normal, incremental approach to safety improvement; it takes us out of the world of striving, of seeking, of trying, and allows us to stand in, and be a stand for the future possibility of Zero Harm. It requires an unreasonable stand for, and commitment to, our own safety and the safety of our colleagues. A Powerful Conversation The safety guarantee began with conversations between executive team members and has been propagated regularly through the line through management meetings, pre-shift meetings, during workplace inspections, job safety observations, job and project planning, orientation and induction sessions, and when opportunities present themselves. This is a conversation that continues outside of Ekati with family, with government, with community members. It is a stand for safety as a value. The conversation about the safety guarantee is now pervasive at Ekati and forms part of a framework of initiatives that have led to sustained improvement in safety performance. During the last two years, the recordable injury frequency at Ekati has dropped to its lowest level in Ekati?s history. At the same time, job safety observations have increased from 500 per month to 4000 per month, whilst the overall number of people at Ekati has reduced by 30%. It has led to new ways of thinking about the conduct of operations. It influenced the 2008 upgrade of the Ekati process plant, resulting in the development and implementation of a crane lift protocol that eliminated injuries during over 100 lifts in two weeks, in an area of difficult geometry and with multiple entrances. It created space to successfully conduct a challenging commissioning period for the process plant crusher, during which time the machine was disassembled and reassembled several times, without incident or injury. No production pressure was permitted to interfere with this work, in line with our stated aim that we wanted everyone involved to guarantee that they would not be seriously injured or killed?our people had the space to do the work at a pace, and in a way, that guaranteed this outcome.
