"Ground vibration is the natural result of the blasting process. Many empirical formulae and methodologies including analysis of travel path effects have been developed. The scaled distance, which is the most popular approach for the calculation of the attenuation of particle velocity in the ground, has led to significant advances in the prediction of particle velocity when both explosive charge and distance vary. However, this approach does not consider the effect of ground anisotropy and existence of structural geological features on ground vibration. Therefore, in this study, the effects of these rock mass properties on types, amplitudes, and frequencies of ground vibration waves at four surface mines are examined. The results, which were implemented at Kangal coal mine, Bastas quarry and Kíbrís quarry, provided guidance for the extensive study at Orhaneli surface coal mine.As a result of the study, the authors came to the conclusion that vibration amplitudes change depending on the ground on which sensors were deployed and the conditions depending on whether measurements were done near major structural geological features. It was determined that the vibration amplitudes, measured at equal distances from the source but in different directions, change because of the propagation velocity anisotropy. Besides the change of wave type due to the kind of ground at the measurement location, it was determined that vibration anomolies were due to structural features."

"In early 2014, Pan American Silver Corp. commenced a project to construct a second shaft at its La Colorada underground mine located in Zacatecas State in Mexico. This was the first new shaft development project undertaken by Pan American Silver in the history of the company. The existing mine workings permitted the use of a raise bore for the excavation of the shaft opening, utilizing directional drilling in poor ground conditions to advance the pilot hole. This was an interesting project with many challenges and successes, and numerous lessons learned. The project was successfully completed in 2016, with the shaft operating at full mine production capacity within weeks. INTRODUCTION The La Colorada Mine has a long history dating from at least the 1920’s. The mine is located in the northern portion of Zacatecas State in Mexico in the Chalchihuites area, an approximate two hour drive south from the city of Durango. Pan American Silver acquired the La Colorada mining concessions in 1998, with mine production at that time consisting of only a few hundred tonnes per day. Over the course of the following 15 years, with the addition of an oxide processing plant and some expansions to the sulphide processing plant and site infrastructure, production was eventually increased to a maximum of 1,250 tonnes per day, all of it generated from conventional cut-and-fill stopes in the underground mine. An existing shaft was used to hoist the ore to surface, and over the years Pan American Silver had deepened the shaft and had changed out some of the hoisting plant. However, there were historic workings in close proximity to the shaft that made it unsuitable for personnel transport, and shaft maintenance was becoming difficult. The shaft was increasingly considered as a risk to the long term production continuity, and also to further deepening of the mine. In addition, expanding the capacity of this old shaft was not possible. Drilling of the La Colorada mineralization at depth commenced in 2010, with very good exploration success. As a result, by the end of 2013, the mine reserves had grown to a total of 6.5 million tonnes of high grade ore (388 g/t Ag, 0.36 g/t Au, 2.4 % Zn, and 1.3% Pb). Furthermore there were more (and higher grade) sulphide reserves than oxide reserves at depth. Following the completion of an internal study in 2013 with assistance from one of the international shaft contractors, a decision was made to increase the production from the mine with the construction of a new shaft and a new sulphide processing plant, a project with a calculated payback of 2.2 years."

"INTRODUCTION Extensive studies have been carried on pure gold to determine the various factors that affect its dissolution in alkaline cyanide solutions. With the extension of milling to refractory ores more intensive investigations on the effect of impurities in the ore on the dissolution kinetics are needed. The present work describes experiments carried on refractory flotation tailings with the object to determine how the recovery of gold could be increased. The effect of arsenic and antimony in the ore and the excessive use of lime are discussed. Control of cyanide losses is also dealt with.MECHANISM OF THE GOLD DISSOLUTION REACTION In aqueous cyanide solutions, gold is believed to be dissolved by one of the following reactions:4Au + 8NaCN + O2 + 2H20 = 4NaAu (CN)2 + 4NaOH (1)2Au + 4NaCN + 2 + 2H20 = 2NaAu (CN)2 + 2NaOH + H202 (2)2Au + 4NaCN + H202 = 2NaAu (CN)2 + 2NaOH (3) The first of these, known as the Elsner Equation is supported by )4 3,2,1(several authors while others(5,6) support reactions 2 and 3 known as the Bodlander Equations. "The Soviet Union has enormous reserves of iron ore in many different kinds of deposits that are widely distributed in this vast land area. The present iron ore industry is based mainly on deposits in Precambrian cherty iron-formation at Krivoy Rog, Kursk and Murmansk. Extensive reserves of both naturally enriched hematite ore and magnetite iron-formation in these areas alone could sup-ply all the domestic ore required for several hundred years.Many contact metasomatic magnetite deposits discovery in recent years in the eastern Ural Mountain belt and east of the Kusnetsov basin in Siberia are being developed, with ore reserves measured in billions of tons. Oolitic limonite-chamosite-siderite ores of Cretaceous and younger age at Kerch on the Black Sea and around the east and southern perimeter of the West Siberian basin constitute some of the largest concentrations of iron in the world. These sedimentary ores are low grade, of poor quality and difficult to beneficiate. Banded jasper magnetite and hematite iron-formation in volcanic rocks of Devonian age in Kazakhstan and along the Mongolian border are of special geoloica1 significance.Iron deposits in the Krivoy Rog and Kursk areas were examined and a large number of geologists discussed their work on deposits in many other parts of the Soviet Union during the writer's seven-week study tour of mines and research institutes in Moscow, Leningrad, Novosibirsk in Siberia and Kiev in the Ukraine. The descriptive geology of iron deposits of useable ore and of marginal material has been well documented in the course of systematic work and a large number of scientists are studying fundamental problems on the origin and treatment of iron ore."

"The comminution energy curve is a profoundly simple graphical technique that displays detailed operating efficiency information for industrial comminution processes. The database underlying the methodology has recently more than doubled, to now contain a substantial fraction of the international comminution output (1.7 billion tonnes of rock per year) across more than 8 major commodities. This increase has deepened the analytical capabilities and effectiveness for assessing comminution circuit performance in relation to comparable operating mines. This paper will explore how the energy curve methodology can be used to examine the ability of stirred mill technologies to increase efficiency.Specifically, this paper explores how the energy curves methodology can be used to present energy efficiency gains achieved at three mines employing a stirred mill technology under different duties. The first of these cases studies was conducted by Rosa (2014) who compared the performance of two ball mills operating in parallel with a Vertimill in the regrinding circuit at the Samarco Iron project in South East Brazil. The Vertimill was found to achieve the same product specification while consuming 40% less energy. Brissette (2010) investigated the impact of grinding media on the performance of both ball mills and Vertimills. The energy savings achieved varied from 10% to 40% for the ball mills and 30% to 60% for the Vertimills. Lastly, Bergerman (2012) investigated the operating conditions of the Sossego regrind circuit from 2006 to 2011 against design specifications and laboratory testing. "In 1957, an asbestos orebody was discovered in the northern sector of the Ungava Peninsula of the Province of Quebec, an area now identified as Asbestos Hill. The deposit is situated on a plateau 1700 feet above sea level and 42 miles inland from Hudson Strait. It is a bleak, iso. lated location of typical arctic environment. Fifteen years were to pass before the first shipment of ungraded fibre was made in 1972. These years we1•e occupied with field surveys and investigations, diamond drilling, engineering design, evaluation of investment and operating costs, and construction. The problems normally associated with mine development were further complicated by location, isolation, and the extreme cold and permanently frozen ground of the arctic regions. Unique to an isolated arctic operation are the organization of support facilities and services, procurement and retention of personnel, construction of access roads and airports, and scheduling of product out and supplies in during the short summer period of sea navigation."

"Historically, tailings management in a northern climate has involved the deposition of tailings into the Tailings Management Area (TMA) as conventional slurry. This type of system is obviously viable but presents challenges that are difficult to manage as circumstances change over the life of mine. These issues can include:? Increases in mill throughput, and? Life of the TMA for the life of mine.This case study will present how thickened, high-density, non-segregating tailings are used as an alternative to conventional slurry disposal to achieve greater storage capacity and enhanced environmental performance for a gold tailings facility in a northern climate. This paper will focus on how this change in deposition strategy accommodated the increased throughput of the mill and the increased life of mine. Specifically, the paper will discuss the addition and integration of new processes to the exiting mill system to accommodate the tailings management issues. It will highlight the challenges from laboratory testing to pre-feasibility to the engineered design of the thickened tailings system implemented at Musselwhite Mine.BACKGROUNDGoldcorp Canada’s Musselwhite Mine, in Northwestern Ontario (120 km north of Pickle Lake), is an underground gold mining operation that began production in 1997. The current mill throughput is about 4000 tpd (1.4 Mtpa). Gold extraction is based on a CIP process with cyanide destruction.The existing tailings management area (TMA) is located about 2 km southwest of the mill complex. The TMA is contained by high ground to the north and to the west and flanged by a moraine ridge along the south side. A number of dams have been constructed along this ridge. The dams were first built in 1996 and subsequently raised in 2000 and again in 2005. Excess tailings pond water is discharged to a polishing pond then released to the environment via a wetland.The TMA was originally designed to contain 13.7 Mt of tailings under a ponded surface for closure. The water cover was to inhibit adverse long-term environmental effects because the tailings contain pyrrhotite and other sulphide-bearing minerals that are potentially acid generating. The design was modified during Stage 3 Construction in 2005 to expand the storage capacity to 17.3 Mt (Golder, 2005). As of end of 2009, over 16 Mt of tailings had been deposited in the TMA. The slurried tailings were historically deposited at 50% solids."

"Batch and continuous regrind tests were conducted in 3 kW and 15 kW tower mill units, respectively. Single particle size classes of a chilean copper sulphide concentrate were employed in the batch tests, while a fraction of the plant stream was deviated to the continuous unit operated under different conditions.Results are interpreted in terms of the simplified grinding kinetic model energy-based and conveniently adapted to this application. Based on the above figures plus some industrial data supplied by MPSI Inc., a scale-up relationship was developed for the apparent specific rate of breakage siE, as a function of the net power draw P, i.e.siE = siE text (P/P test) 0.089This equation fit very well the available data at the three scales and its application to regrind 4400 t/day of rougher copper concentrate from 70% below 325 Tyler mesh to 95% below same mesh, involves around 30% energy-saving compared to standard ball mill for same grinding task.INTRODUCTIONImpact and abrasion-attrition breakage are two extreme mechanisms present in any grinding system in a proportion defined by specific design and operating conditions. Impact breakage is generally efficient for coarse grinding, while abrasion-attrition is adequate to produce fine particles. Efficiency of conventional tumbling mills decreases as fineness of the product increases, even though distribution of applied stresses is always much stronger than internal force distribution in the particles. On the other hand.in a vertically stirred ball mill like the tower mill, distribution of applied stresses and particle strengths are in the same order of magnitude, making possible nearly ideal abrasion conditions (1).Tower mill configuration includes a cylindrical body vertically mounted and provided with a central screw with flights to produce circulation of balls moved up through the inner region to return down by the external space. Fresh material can be fed into the top , center or bottom in order to assure appropriate agitation of suspended particles. Size reduction and evacuation rates should compensate settling of coarse particles to avoid sanding of the screw. Detailed description of the tower mill and its operation have been given elsewhere (2),(3)."

"The Highland Uranium Project (HUP) is located approximately sixty miles northeast of Casper, Wyoming and is owned and operated by Power Resources, Inc. (PRI). With an annual production of680 tonnes (1.5 million lbs) U308, HUP is one of the largest uranium producers by in-situ leach (ISL) in the western world. Uranium is currently produced from four wellfields with a total flow rate of approximately 1,135 m3/hr (5,000 gpm). The carbonate leach solutions are processed by anion ion exchange at two satellite facilities located in close proximity to the wellfields. The loaded resin is transported by truck to a central processing facility for elution of the uranium. Uranium in the pregnant eluant is precipitated and washed prior to calcining.Wastewater from the satellite facilities is treated and used for irrigation at a Land Application Facility. The wastewater generated at the central processing facility is injected into a 2,750 m (9,000 ft) deep waste disposal well.When economical mining of the orebodies is complete, restoration of the groundwater is initiated. There are currently two wellfields at HUP undergoing ground water restoration. Phase I restoration consists of removal of the carbonate leach solution from the ore body. Phase II includes treating the withdrawn fluid with reverse osmosis and reinjection of the permeate into perimeter wells.Future plans include construction of additional satellite facilities at the Gas Hills Project and other economical deposits located within 240 km (150 mi) of HUP. The capacity of the central processing facility will be increased to 1,815 tonnes (4 million lbs) U308 per year by late 1999."

"The Anglo American Platinum’s Rustenburg Base Metals Refinery (RBMR) has the world’s first full deposit nickel plating tankhouse. Impurities in the nickel electrolyte can induce stresses in the electrowon nickel deposits that could lead to delamination of the deposit. Identifying the impurities that contribute to increasing internal stresses in the nickel deposit is key to successful operation and automation of the tankhouse. Impurities were introduced in the plant electrolyte and the effects on the full-scale nickel deposits evaluated. The impurity-adjusted electrolyte solutions were also analyzed using commercially available bench-scale methods to determine the induced stress. A correlation between impurity-induced deposit stress and full-scale delamination was developed. A direct correlation can now be made between feed quality, i.e. impurity concentrations, and degree of delamination in the plant. This methodology has the potential to rapidly predict the effect of new reagents, upstream process upset conditions and synergistic interactions between impurities on deposit stress and delamination of nickel deposits.INTRODUCTION Nickel electrowinning in sulphate media was first pioneered by Outokumpu in its Harjavalta refinery in 1960 (Saarinen and Seilo, 1985). The original process was very manual with starter sheets plated onto “acid resistant” steel for 36 hours and then manually stripped and cut into sheets which could be inserted into the main production cells for a further 4–5 days. The starter sheet stripping and manufacture process was later automated. The same technology was subsequently implemented on a number of plants around the world. Anglo American Platinum’s Base Metal Refinery (BMR) began nickel electrowinning in the early 1980’s. The recent expansion of Anglo American Platinum’s Base Metals Refinery necessitated the construction of a new nickel tankhouse to achieve two primary objectives. The first to increase the capacity to 32 400 tpa nickel and the second to reduce employee occupational exposure to nickel aerosols. The new tankhouse has been commissioned and is in the process of ramp-up; more details are given by Hagemann et al. (2016). Fundamental to lowering employee exposure to aerosols was automating both harvesting and final handling of cathode. In order to accomplish this a bold move was taken to plate up to 10 days on permanent titanium blanks which are harvested by automatic crane and automatically stripped. The original development work for the plating nickel on titanium blanks over a ten day cycle is given by Bryson et al. (2006)."

"In a COREM-McGill collaborative research and development project, gas dispersion parameters and froth properties were manipulated in a copper flotation plant to study interactions between the collection and the cleaning zones. In this paper, specific work on developing some relationships between operating conditions and froth stability in a rougher column flotation cell of 125 m3 is reported. Froth stability, measured by image analysis, was related to the following process conditions for specific flotation machines in an industrial case study: Gas flow rate, collector dosage, pH, frother type and dosage. Across the range examined, froth stability was improved through a decrease in gas flow rate and/or increasing frother dosage. Metallurgical results (grade and recovery) showed that both gold and copper were dependent on froth stability.INTRODUCTIONMcGill and COREM have over the past two years collaborated in a research and development project to merge gas dispersion parameters, frother analysis (McGill technology), and froth properties (COREM’s imaging system) to study the interactions between the collection zone (pulp) and the cleaning zone (froth). The main goal is to increase knowledge of flotation cell hydrodynamics since it is known to govern the metallurgical performance of the flotation process (Power et al., 2000). In this paper, specific work on developing some relationships between operating conditions and froth stability in a copper flotation circuit is reported.The objective of this work is to study gas dispersion in a large volume flotation column (hydrodynamics) and to measure its impact on the froth. By froth imaging, it is possible to diagnose operational problems on the basis of froth characteristics (Bartolacci et al., 2005a) and consequently, to propose ways of improving process performance by froth analysis (Bartolacci et al., 2005b).Another approach to froth characterization is investigated in this paper. In the same flotation column, a froth stability apparatus (column) was included (Triffet and Cillers, 2004). The mechanical froth stability apparatus is used to link “hard” froth characteristic measurements to “soft” froth characteristic measurements (those obtained by imaging)."

"More than 70% of potash is produced worldwide by froth flotation. Flotation of potash was developed in the early 1930s. Amines are widely used for flotation of sylvite (KCl) from halite (NaCl) and insoluble materials such as clays. Amine collector is also absorbed by clays. Therefore, clays are usually separated by scrubbing and de-sliming prior to flotation. Alternatively, slimes can be floated ahead of potash flotation. Flotation recoveries of sylvite are commonly in the range of 85%, while losses can occur in slimes, flotation tailings and make-up of process brine. Ores containing free coarse-grained sylvite are generally screened, whereas both fine and coarse fractions are conditioned and floated separately. The unique features of potash flotation include solubility of sylvite in water, the size of particles floated and fast kinetics. Particles up to 2.3 mm can be floated and about 50% of flotation feed can be removed in the rougher stage in few minutes. The main challenges in potash flotation are the recovery of potash from slimes, flotation efficiency in the presence of carnallite and recovery of coarse potash grains. A review of potash flotation shows that there is still room for improvement in both coarse and fine potash flotation. The present paper reviews the most significant flotation parameters including reagent type and dosage, flotation circuits, flotation equipment size and new developments in potash flotation. The latter include new reagents, flotation technologies (Hydrofloat, Jameson and column cells) larger flotation cells and slimes flotation.INTRODUCTION Potash is the common industrial term for potassium in various chemical combinations and minerals soluble in water. About 90% of potash produced worldwide is used as agricultural fertilizers. Flotation is the main treatment process of sylvinite (KCl-NaCl) ores for recovery of sylvite (KCl). Potash concentrate should contain a minimum of 95% KCl and be relatively free from 0.2 mm KCl fines. The flotation process for beneficiation of potash ores was developed in United States and Russia concurrently in the early 1930s. In 1934, Potash Corporation of America applied flotation process in a commercial scale (Tippin R.B. and Huiatt J.L). In the initial application, halite (NaCl) was selectively floated by employing lead chloride as an activator and soap as collector. The sylvite concentrate was reported in the cell underflow."

"The El Mochito Mine located in Honduras, Central America, has produced lead, zinc and silver in concentrates since the 1950s. The paper discusses changes made in both lead and zinc circuits to reduce costs while maintaining production during the recent period of low metal prices.The intent of this paper is to show that sometimes thinking “outside the box” is beneficial for progress. Also, in striving for better metallurgical results we should not forget the basics of flotation. Sometimes the latest trends may not be applicable to the ore we are treating and may not meet the operating cost constraints.A major beneficial impact on El Mochito metallurgy was achieved when the overall grind was coarsened, eliminating the significant percentage of slimes. Switching from two parallel twostage grinding circuits to one circuit with three-stage series grinding has resulted in a significant reduction in power and steel consumption. With minor layout/reagent modifications, both lead and zinc circuits gained not only in retention time but as well in producing better grade products.Of course, the challenges are still there; they exist and only with the full support of operational data collection and metallurgical laboratory investigation success can come. That is why, we as professionals, can never stop in trying to make the most of what we have.INTRODUCTIONThe El Mochito Mine is owned by American Pacific Honduras S.A. de C.V. (AMPAC) a subsidiary of Breakwater Resources Ltd. Of Toronto, Canada. The mine is located in western Honduras, approximately 220 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Tegucigalpa and 90 kilometers south of the country’s second largest city, San Pedro Sula. The mine began operating in 1948 and to date has produced more than 19 million tonnes grading 240 g/t Ag, 3.5% Pb and 7.4% Zn. Production in 2005 was 700,190 tonnes grading 87 g/t Ag, 1.85% Pb and 6.61% Zn.Decreasing metal content in the ore followed by the lowest zinc price on the market in the last 15 years (see Figure 1) has reduced the cash flow and endangered to stop the operation."

"The mining market is researching innovative methods to train the workforce for mining which is normally extremely difficult to get. Thus, the dynamic simulation-based technologies become an essential pillar to educate and train the inexperienced staff at the pace required by this industry. Even if Operator Training Simulator (OTS) systems are commonly used in most of industries, knowledge transmitted to operators are unfortunately not ""capitalized"" in general. The OTS systems are usually delivered as a single hardware and software platform and very little as a full service long-term.In this article, an integrated solution to increase the efficiency of the operators is proposed. This solution is based on the combination of dynamic simulation, processes knowledge, virtual reality and the knowledge capitalization through the creation of simulation scenarios and e-learning. The Codelco Ministro Hales plant simulation project for a copper concentrator plant is presented as a real life example.IntroductionDynamic and real-time process simulation have proven to be a must in the development of greenfield projects, providing mechanisms to design and test controls design, interlocks, start-up, shut down sequences and operator training, among others (see (McMillan, 2006) for further details). "Gekko Systems developed the Gekko Resin Exchange Column (G-REX) in order to optimise the recovery of gold in complex leach-to-electrowinning processes, as an intermediate step using a highly gold-selective resin to isolate contaminant metals. The AuRIX®100 resin produced by Purolite is licensed exclusively to Gekko, with the G-REX column designed specifically for this resin (Lewis-Gray et al, 2015). Operational experience has been gained at the CGT Ballarat Gold Plant in near continuous operation since 2008, treating unclarified concentrate leach solution. The extension of the technology to higher throughputs and more complex chemistry is discussed.Aurix®100 ResinAuRIX®100 resin is a cross-linked polystyrene alkaline resin developed by Henkel (Virnig et al, 1996). The resin beads are off-white in colour, spherical, with a nominal size of 100% +600µm. This resin is highly selective for gold and silver over many metals, by way of extracting precious metal cyanide complexes from leach solutions with a pH less than 11.5. The higher end of the pH scale produces best selectivity according to the order of preference: Au > Ag > Hg > Zn > Ni > Cu > Co > Fe. Purolite produces the resin and Gekko Systems maintains licensing of AuRIX®100 resin for use in its G-REX column as part of its unique suite of gravity gold handling equipment.Significant cost savings over carbon-in-solution (CIS) systems are realised with AURIX®100 resin, of around 4% to 12% in capital savings and 27% to 40% in operating costs (Virnig et al, 2004). Allied to this is that AuRIX®100 resin is not susceptible to fouling, that is, the resin does not load with inorganic salts or organic compounds which would affect the loading and extraction of precious metals. To counter any potential for fouling by inorganic salts, in service a dilute acid wash is carried out periodically on the resin to unblock resin pores."

"Slime coating is a recognized challenge in fine particle flotation, not only in decreasing recovery, but also in reducing the selectivity and hence froth quality. In this presentation, a novel method based on electrophoretic mobility distribution measurement to study slime coatings is described. By measuring electrophoretic mobility distribution of individual minerals and their mixtures, the interactions between these minerals can be evaluated.For illustrative purposes, a model system of fine coals, or oil sands with two different types of fine clays was studied. Flotation tests showed a significant decrease in coal (bitumen) flotation recovery with montmorillonite but not with kaolinite clay addition. When electrophoretic mobility distribution of a fine coal/montmorillonite clay mixture was measured, a single modal zeta potential distribution was obtained, in contrast to a bimodal distribution for fine coalkaolinite clay mixture. This finding suggests a stronger adhesion of montmorillonite than kaolinite clays on fine coal surfaces. In the case of bitumen, the bimodal zeta potential distribution was measured for the mixture of bitumen emulsion and kaolinite or montmorillonite, indicating a weak attraction of the clays by bitumen. In the presence of calcium, however, a single modal zeta potential distribution was obtained in the mixture of bitumen emulsion with montmorillonite but not kaolinite clays. These findings are in excellent agreement with bitumen flotation results, demonstrating that the electrophoretic distribution measurement is a powerful tool to study slime coating phenomenon in a complex fine particle flotation system."

"The oil sands industry is still fairly young with the first viable oil sand operation having been started in Alberta in 1960. Since then numerous modifications and improvements have been tried and implemented. The current process makes use of high velocity pumping of oil sands slurry with hot water (hydrotransport) to achieve separation of bitumen from the sand.A number of the oil sands processes have been adapted from unit operations that are used in mineral processing, such as crushing, screening, flotation, cycloning and thickening. This paper outlines a typical oil sands process flowsheet and investigates the differences and similarities in technologies and costs to other mineral processing industries. It also considers the very large throughputs required, and presents some of the difficulties and challenges currently faced by the industry as a result of high demand for oil and environmental pressures.INTRODUCTIONOil sands (also known as tar sands) deposits are found throughout the world. The Athabasca Oil Sands deposit in Aberta is the largest of these. Oil sands consist of a mixture of crude bitumen (a semi-solid form of crude oil), silica sand, clay minerals, and water. The Athabasca, Peace River and Cold Lake deposits cover 141,000 square kilometers and contain about 1.7 trillion barrels (270×109 m3) of bitumen in-place, comparable in magnitude to the world's total proven reserves of conventional oil"

"Niobec has been using vibrating screens and screw classifiers as a double stage classification in its grinding circuit since the very beginning of its operation in St-Honoré. Most of the other mineral processing plants around the world uses cyclones as the classification device in their grinding circuit. The difference between these two methods are well known in terms of capital cost and grinding efficiency but the differences in terms of the impact on the downstream processing stages are a lot harder to predict and are case specific. In the interest of lowering the capital cost of a future expansion project, Niobec decided to test the cyclones in its actual grinding circuit and evaluate their impact on the recovery of the downstream processing stages as well as the operating cost of the mill. We switched between cyclones and screens for 8 month in 2013 and early 2014 and we are now operating only with cyclones since march 2014.INTRODUCTIONThe Niobec mine and concentrator were built in the mid 70’s and at that time, the mill was processing 1 500 tons per day. Over the years, many expansion projects have brought the plant to 7 000 tons per day. Throughout the initial concentrator design and commissioning, screens have been chosen over cyclones because of their higher classification efficiency which is known to reduce variability and limit the fine generation especially due to a high undersize classification efficiency. Just like many other plants, fine particle generation is a major problem at Niobec because of its negative effect on downstream processing stages. In the interest of lowering the capital cost of a future expansion project, Niobec’s engineering team decided, 35 years later, to test the cyclones in its actual grinding circuit and evaluate their actual impact on the final recovery and the operating cost of the mill.The grinding circuit is separated in two lines which will be called Circuit #1 and Circuit #2 along this paper. Circuit #1 is, as you can see in Figure 1, composed of a rod mill and two parallel ball mills in closed circuit with screens and screw classifiers. The screens oversize are sent to the screw classifiers while the undersize are sent to the next processing stage. The screw classifiers overflow are both sent back to the pump box while their oversize streams return in their corresponding ball mills for further grinding. Circuit #2 is, as you can see in Figure 1, quite the same as Circuit #1 except it has only one set of screw classifier and ball mill. Figure 1 also shows the modification in arrangement each circuits went through to integrate the new cyclones. One of the ball mills in Circuit #1 now appears dotted because it can still be used but is not now"
