This study has been carried out to use the waste sludges generated at Pohang Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. (POSCO) as the raw materials of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). The burnability index of the raw mixture and the hydration characteristics and compressive strength of clinker have been examined. The waste sludges were mainly composed of CaO, SiO2, Al2O3, and Fe2O3, the main component of OPC. The Burnability index of mixture was improved, according to the replacement content of POSCO sludge increase. POSCO sludge can be used as a raw material for cement because the state of mineral development and property of clinker produced from POSCO sludge are similar to the plain. Therefore, POSCO sludges can be used as the source materials of iron and calcium oxide.

"When improving a plant a mineral processing engineer would like to know the mineral composition distribution. In order to assess this distribution in particles, as compared to the corresponding distribution in particle sections, a procedure needs to be applied to the observed particle sections. Such a procedure is called a stereological correction. There exists many stereological correction procedures, but one group of such procedures is based on using those stereological equations that do not require making assumptions regarding particle shape or texture. These equations are called geometric probability equations.Davy derived a geometric probability equation to estimate the covariance of mineral composition distributions for particles from both particle sections and linear intercepts. This covariance can be used to measure the variance of the particle composition distribution of each mineral. The equation as presented by Davy requires textural information; however the equation was modified by Gay to be more directly applied to particle sections and linear intercepts. The variance obtained from applying this equation is fundamental to the binary stereological correction procedures developed by Gay and his colleagues; the covariance is fundamental to the multiphase stereological correction.Thus far, validation of both the binary and multiphase stereological correction has been achieved using numerical simulation. This paper shall present results comparing the covariance (and variance) estimates from Gay’s equation with actual three-dimensional information obtained from serially sectioning particles. This involved mounting a set of particles and continuously sectioning all particles uniformly so that the three dimensional structure of the particles could be obtained.The mineralogical data to which the equations described above were applied were derived from two individual size fractions from a hard-rock titanium deposit. "In flotation practice, a good recovery of minerals largely depends on the degree to which the valuable minerals have been liberated from the associated gangue during the grinding process. Therefore, a regular measurement of the degree of liberation can provide data for the assessment of the quality of separation and predicts the effect of changes in the grinding-classifying circuit on flotation process. Generally, the standard procedure for measuring the degree of liberation requires the preparation of polished sections - a time consuming operation that also has the disadvantage of providing an overestimated number of free particles because of the stereological nature of produced samples.The present work is an alternative approach to avoid these miscalculations and establish a system of control for fluorite flotation plants. The system deals no only with the state of liberation but also the dynamic behavior of individuals particles and mineral components within the grinding-classifying and flotation circuits. It involves methods such as sieving, x-ray diffraction analysis, study of polished sections and microscopic counting of preliminarily sieved minerals particles from a fluorite processing plant, randomly dispersed on a glass slide, but not embedded in a resin mounting medium. If a complete information on the textural properties of minerals in the ore (including its mineral components distribution) can be obtained through x-ray diffraction analysis and study of polished sections, the microscopic counting is used to determinate with enough accuracy the mineral liberation, estimate the grade of fluorite ore and products, determinate the deportment and approximate recovery of individuals particles and mineral components within the investigated circuit. For a count of 100-1000 particles in each n-size range, the counting method was found to be a particularly reliable and less time consuming operation that could substitute the chemical analysis of fluorite ore for an estimate of the grade:"

"The three kinds of phosphate ores (igneous, metasedimentary and sedimentary) found in China have great differences in flotation flowsheets and reagents suite because of their crystal structure and mineral composition. The igneous and metasedimentary apatites have good floatability with fatty acid as collector and waterglass, sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate as conditioners. The sedimentary phosphate is very difficult to beneficiate by direct flotation because of their poor floatabilities and relatively high content of MgO and SiO2, even though the dolomite depressants are used sometimes.The differences in floatability of apatites in China are closely related to their differences in specific surface area. The amount of collector to float apatite increases with the specific surface area. Apatite with lower specific surface area showed good floatability at lower collector concentration. Apatite with a higher specific surface area needed a higher concentration of collector. The content of CO3 2- will affect the specific surface area of apatite by distortion of its crystal structure and consequently affect its floatability.Dolomite can be easily rejected from apatite in a weak acidic medium (pH=5), especially in phosphoric acid medium by reverse flotation. Quartz and siliceous gangue in sedimentary apatite can be removed by direct flotation using fatty acid or by reverse flotation using amine. Amine is not practically applied because sedimentary apatite in China is usually very fine and needs fine grinding, which always results in excessive, very fine, stable and non-flowable foam.Based on the floatability of phosphate ore in China, a two-stage flotation process, direct and reverse flotation (D+R), was developed to beneficiate sedimentary ore. For the Haikou phosphate ore containing 25.11% P2O5, 3.46% MgO and 16.5% SiO2, a concentrate containing 31.84% P2O5, 0.48% MgO and 14.8% SiO2 can be obtained through a continuous D+R test at a recovery of 89%."

"Although heap leaching may be perceived as a somewhat low-tech route for the extraction of low-grade minerals, the underlying physical, chemical and biological processes are in fact extremely complex. There has been increased interest in heap leaching of sulphide minerals in recent years with the advent of controlled bio-heap leaching, and the need to mine more marginal ore deposits.A detailed investigation into the dynamics of heap leach processes has provided much insight into the underlying complexities, and has led to the development of a sophisticated modelling tool, HeapSim. Some of the sub-processes that are modelled include mineral kinetics, particle size effects, bacterial growth, oxidation and adsorption, gas adsorption, pore diffusion, bulk advection, gas balance and heat conservation. The interplay of these various sub-processes is illustrated in the paper.Two case studies are presented which illustrate specific features of the model for different applications and how these have helped to identify key areas of concern. The first is focussed on chalcocite heap bioleaching, which shows that by nature of the reaction the process is strongly dependent on the initial supply of acid to the mineral site. In heaps this acid supply can be severely limited by the rate of diffusion from channels of flowing solution into stagnant zones of the heap, whereas in narrow-bore laboratory columns this effect is not observed."

"During the conventional chromite dissolution process; chromite ore concentrates were ground to at least <90 µm using the ball mill and after adding Na2CO3 and leaning material (instead of CaCO3 also residues from the leaching process) at a ratio of e.g. 1:0.75:1.2, depending on the specific formulation, follows the digestion e.g. in a rotary kiln, heated in countercurrent. The reaction time is 3 to 8 h. The calcine is comminuted and leached with water or a thin chromate solution. Depending on the type of ore used, the yield is 75-85 %. The disadvantage of the above-described process is that it is impossible, using current technology, to achieve a complete digestion of the chromite ores and that the chromium-containing residues have to be disposed of as special waste, involving a large financial effort.The subject of this study was the investigation of the effect of vibratory milling on chromite dissolution. The impact stress in the vibratory mill causes the mechanical activation of chromite, which is characterised by lattice defects. The degree of mechanical activation can be quantified by measuring the relative X-ray diffraction intensities at the parent lattice planes of chromite. Each relative X-ray diffraction ratio correlates with a certain degree of digestion. As opposed to vibratory milling, a complete digestion of chromite using a ball mill is impossible, even at extremely long grinding times.In this investigation a chromite concentrate from Pulpinar/Kayseri with content of 44 % Cr2O3 and the Eccentric Vibratory Mill was used. In order to verify the effect of the vibrating grinding on chromite dissolution, reaction kinetic investigations on digestion and leaching were carried out."

"In many volcanogenic base metal deposits of Russia the gold is closely associated with copper sulphides and pyrite. The recovery of gold associated with pyrite is especially difficult problem.Investigations of gold chemical state and mineral forms in copper-zinc sulphide ores of Gay and Barsuchiy Log deposits in the Urals have been made using EPMA, optic image-analysis, XRA, SEM, thermo-electrical force measurements and selective gold leaching experiments.Two gold varieties are determined: 1) free native gold particles (from 5 µm up to 0,25-1,0 mm), which can be liberated after grinding of ore up to 0,074 µm and named “free gold”; 2)”invisible” gold, including finely disseminated native gold and chemically bound gold. The second variety can’t be disclosed during grinding. Free gold can be recovered by gravitation and flotation while the processing behaviour of “invisible” gold is determined by properties of gold-bearing sulphides: pyrite and chalcopyrite. According to results of diagnostic leaching experiments in ores of deposits mentioned above the part by weight of free gold reaches 70%, the part by weight of the ”invisible” gold is up to 20%. About 10% of gold is enclosed in quartz and acid-soluble minerals.Theoretically (taking into account gold distribution data) it’s may anticipate gold recovery by gravitation up to 60%. However after grinding up to 50-60% of class –0,074 mm only about 40% of gold passes into oversize product including 30% of free gold and 8% of ”invisible” one. It can be recovered by gravitation. Remaining free gold and ”invisible” gold can be extracted by flotation – 25% in total. Inevitable gold losses in tailings may reach 8-10%."

In most cases, the sizing of dry or wet mills for ore processing is primarily based on the determination of the Bond grindability index, using the Bond-Kjos-Rowland relations. In several cases, grinding takes place under conditions different from these and the grinding conditions have a great influence on the postgrinding process. This is particularly true for the grinding of bauxites where grinding takes place in alkali, often in higher temperature in alkali Liquor. So it is necessary to develop a testing method providing a reliable grindability index even under these special circumstances and allowing a more precise mill sizing. Therefore we surrounded the grinding crucible of the Hardgrove mill with a crucible furnace to heat it. The new heated mill is suitable to determine the grindability index under temperature-controlled circumstances, in liquids (water and alkali) with different temperatures. The required heating power is 2000 W. In the implemented equipment we installed four 230V/500W electric heating wires made from heat-resistant alloyed material and surrounded by ceramic insulators. The temperature and temperature-gradient are measured by four PT100 platinum thermal resistors. The data acquisition and control program written in the C language in the Lab Windows CVI program environment measures the voltage proportional to the temperature. Determining the grindability indices of hungarian and greek bauxites experimentally, first dry grinding tests were carried out under standard conditions. During wet and alkaline grinding, to 50 g of dry bauxite 85.5 g of industrial alkali with a concentration of about 200 g/l was added. As grinding aid 2 g of CaO (4 % of dry bauxite) was dosed. From the data it can be concluded: - The tested bauxites show a similar behaviour against temperature change. However, the extent of grindability change is different for different bauxites. - Soft Hungarian boehmitic bauxite can be ground in a high-temperature alkaline medium better than hard Greek one. The increase of grindability according to the high-temperature Hardgrove indices: (kHT = Dry o HT,alkaline H /H ): for hard Greek and soft Hungarian boehmitic bauxites: kHT = 1.7 and 2.4 respectively; according to estimated Bond indices (kB,HT =Wi,dry/Wi,HT, alkaline ): kB,HT = 1.6 and 2.1. - The increase of grindability is the most important factor the reaction of kaolinite with caustic liquor and lime and the loosing of the textural structure at 80 ºC and especially at 100 ºC.

Refractory iron ore deposits in China have various genesis and complicated types, the nature of which is poor, fine-disseminated and complex. Therefore, refractory iron ore could scarcely be separated and utilized by traditional mineral processing technology at present. It is necessary to explore deep reduction technology to change the characteristics of refractory iron ore and to use effectively the iron resource. And deep reduction technology is that on the condition of higher reduction temperature than that of magnetic roasting and stronger reducing atmosphere, the iron oxides from iron ore was reduced to metallic iron particle that is easy to dissociate. And then production from deep reduction is easily separated by magnetic separation and iron powder production was obtained finally. Deep reduction technology for Lingyang iron ore from Jilin, China, as the refractory iron ore, was studied in this paper. The influences of such main factors as reduction temperature, time and coal content were investigated. The results showed that the Metallization rate of reduction product was up to more than 90% under optimum conditions, and then higher iron grade and recovery of reduction iron powder were obtained from subsequent magnetic separation. Furthermore, the deep reduction mechanism in the system was studied by the means of XRD and SEM analysis for reduction production and Physical Chemistry of Metallurgy. Analytical results indicated that during deep reduction, the size of iron particle from deep reduction materials was increasing as reduction temperature rising and reduction time extending. The growth of metallic iron particle from deep reduction production was divided into such three stages as reduction nucleation, deep reduction and growth of metallic iron particle.

"It is difficult separating fluorite from Ca, Ba, Si intergrowth minerals than simple from Si, using common reagents such as combination of oleic acid or paraffin soap and water glass, but the finest quality fluorite concentrate whose grade is over 96%F must be required in chemical plant.This paper studies the flotation process of native fluorite from calcite, barite and silicate minerals whose flotation properties is similar to fluorite, using new effective collector H602 and new depressor S602 that is cheaper in cost, and describes the flotation properties. In order to determine optimum flotation separation condition, the effect of pulp pH, pulp temperature, pulp density and the effect of dosage of reagents on flotation were investigated and the flotation result was provided by oleic acid collector and the results of collector H602 were compared with those of collector oleic acid in the test. The test result of ore samples shows that at moderate pulp pH values (10.5-11.5) and other moderate technical conditions, the fluorite mineral can be obtained by new reagents and the rational reagents combination. The conclusion is 98%F of fluorite concentrate can be obtained, using the combination of H602 and S602 and only 5 steps in techniques. The paper discusses the mechanism of the flotation separation of fluorite mineral from intergrowth minerals."

The process conditions and mineral characters of cleaning separation stage in magnetite concentration plant are studied in the paper, and the affecting factors and the methods to increase the concentrate grade are analysed and given. The BKJ cleaning special drum magnetic separator is developed specially for the cleaning stage according to process conditions and mineral character. The separation mechanism, structure characters, separation process and excellent adaptability of BKJ special magnetic separator are described. The results in Zhangjiawa Concentration Plant show that the BKJ special drum magnetite separators play an important role in increasing the concentrate grade and improving the economic benefit.

"The Merensky Reef is a platinum group minerals (PGM) bearing reef in the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. The reef has been treated by bulk PGM and sulphide flotation with the aim of maximisingthe valuable minerals recovery and gangue minerals rejection.Synthetic water with a calcium concentration of 80 ppm and 500 ppm was prepared and the flotation results obtained were compared to a simple electrolyte in order to determine the effect water quality has on pentlandite and pyroxene surface alteration and, ultimately, floatability. During the study, the possible effect of interactions between the minerals investigated and Ca2+ ions in the presence of sodium isobutyl xanthate was studied at pH 6 and pH 9 by means of zeta potential determinations, microflotation tests and ToF-SIMS analysis.The results obtained on 1:1 pentlandite-pyroxene mixtures showed that the quality of process water plays an important role in flotation. The flotation recoveries of pentlandite and pyroxene were lower in synthetic process water compared to those obtained in a simple electrolyte solution."

"The profitability of mining and metallurgical operations continues to lag behind that of other industries despite the technical advances that have occurred in recent years. A primary reason for poor performing in this economic sector is the lack of integration of mining and metallurgical information. The mine cut-off grade can be optimized if mining and metallurgical engineers have the data to optimize milling for the type of ore in hand.Integration of mine transactions, stockpile inventories, process flows and assays is the key to determining the economics for each blast strategy in a mining site. Real-time information from manufacturing assets greatly affects the profitability and flexibility of a company, but gross errors from faulty sensors, inaccurate instrument calibration, or incorrect process models may corrupt actionable information. New software tools can model the process, sift through available data to identify and eliminate gross errors, and use statistical data reconciliation to create materially balanced and consistent readings. The reconciled data is unified for use by both monitoring and decision making processes.Creating a real-time information environment where upgrade and change are allowed is becoming an accepted methodology to accelerate and simplify the integration of applications such as production monitoring, equipment performance management and yield and inventory management."

"One of the oldest mining areas in the World exist in Africa and the Middle East. This area is being exploited by foreign and local mining entities. Several large plants, both foreign and local as well as small operators, conduct their mining business on a scale which would be could be prohibited in any other part of the world. Relatively recent European disaster with tailing disposal and breakout has highlighted the problem.More important to the author is that the presence of foreign entities in zones which have not remedied the situation but has heightened the concern due to those entities using similar outrageous methods in treatment of waste. The abject misuse of technology cannot be permitted to continue and the lack of any metallurgical knowledge in the treatment of gold ores is considered deplorable for the majority of third world countries.The destruction of cyanide is simple and straightforward and requires no special skills. In South America, we developed a system that is modular, compact and can be operated in batch mode to cater for several clients, as required. Larger installations would require a separate module, as treatmentwould be on a continuous basis."

"The ore features of Mongolian fluorspar deposits are shown in the paper. The possibilities of the technological of ore processing on the Bor-Undur combine scheme improvement are analyzed there. Some recommendations are done for scheme development: spare output technologies, the usage large-sized ore separation, flotation by columnar flotation cells, leaching and concentrate agglomeration.New evaluation and usage of mineral sources approach was developed for Mongolian fluoride ores. This investigation is concerned with the optimization of ultrafine grinding of solids. It is focused on a dynamic classifier for recovering the fine fraction, for automatic recycling of the oversize particles and for reducing power consumption. Power consumption plays a major role in these energy intensive processes and depends on several parameters such as nature of the solid, degree of fineness of the finished product and, above all, grain size of the feed. This study indicates the optimal conditions for a dynamic classifier, that is, geometric characteristics of the apparatus and its capacity, inlet air flow rate and dimensions of the classification circuit. It is also shown that a mean grain diameter (dm) of about 2.00 µm with top size (dmax) of 50 µm can be achieved with an imperfection value of below 0.40 and energy consumption of 215 kWht-1. "Very seldom is it possible when contacting a gas with a slurry to measure the dissolved gas concentration in the slurry, and even were it possible, seldom are equilibrium data available with a suitable Henry’s law constant.In general, by assuming a reasonable value for the dissolved gas concentration in the slurry and a corresponding equilibrium gas partial pressure P*, Kga values can be calculated for the pilot plant and scaled up. Then, with the same P* value at various reaction conditions, a mixer can be designed which is quite satisfactory, having a reasonable design factor for full-scale performance.We will take as an example a slurry of a known solids composition and use a continuous 4 tank system. By assuming a percentage saturation of the dissolved gas in the first tank, the dissolved gas concentration can be obtained in the other three tanks. It usually is possible to measure the off-gas composition in each of the 4 tanks. If the top of the tanks is connected in the form of a multi-compartmented horizontal autoclave, then a modified top off-gas composition in each compartment must be used."

"Separation in Froth (SIF) is a process for the separation of mineral particles during their descent downwards through a moving froth layer, generated on the surface of water or some other liquid media by means of a bubble generator and frother. Due to the special operation principles of SIF it is possible to separate mineral particles that are about 10 times coarser than the optimal particle size for conventional flotation. In this paper the performance of the SIF technique is presented in the separation of apatite, calcite and silicate minerals from various industrial sources, based on tests with laboratory and pilot plant-scale SIF machines. Basic laboratory test results of the flotation of pure diamonds are also presented.It was shown that calcite, apatite and diamonds with particle size up to about 3 mm can be successfully floated with SIF at high recovery and grade, provided that the degree of liberation is sufficiently high. Coarse calcite (+0.25-2.8 mm) was concentrated with reverse SIF in one flotation step at 87% recovery with better than 99% grade. Apatite particles coarser than 0.2 mm are not well floated in the conventional flotation circuit leading to high P2O5 content in the coarse size fractions of flotation tailings. On the contrary, SIF is capable of recovering such coarse particles at high recovery. However, P2O5 content of the SIF tailings starts to increase at about 0.7 mm due to insufficient liberation of apatite. At higher particle size the lack of hydrophobicity of apatite particles is also likely to lower the recovery.The pilot plant testwork showed that SIF can be successfully used at operating plants not only for preliminary upgrading of the feed of conventional flotation, but also for producing final grade calcite concentrate (>99.5%) from the screen overflow or from the cyclone underflow in a particle size range up to 1 mm. It was particularly promising that the separation took place in one SIF flotation step, instead of several stages of the conventional flotation circuit, with over 90% calcite recovery. The specific capacity determined with the 1 m2 pilot plant unit was approximately 30 t/m2h. Simultaneously the consumption of chemicals was significantly lower than for conventional flotation."

"Comparison of the two most commonly used classes of depressant in the South African platinum industry is complicated by the fact that these polymers induce different effects on the surfaces onto which they adsorb. The use of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), which is ionically charged in solution, can lead to increased particle dispersion in addition to the effect of reduced surface hydrophobicity (depression). Guar is typically only slightly charged in solution. Comparison of these two depressants is complicated since it is uncertain whether differences in their action is a result of either depression of dispersion effects.This work investigates the role of dispersion independently to that of depression in the batch flotation of a platinum bearing ore. An inorganic dispersant, sodium hexametaphosphate (NaHMP) was added in parallel to the uncharged guar depressant to simulate the action of depressants with varying degrees of dispersion. By distinguishing between the material recovered by entrainment and the floatable gangue and by including the effects of froth stability it was possible to decouple the effects of dispersion and depression.The results show that both dispersion and depression led to increased grade of the sulphide minerals. Depression leads to a decreased recovery of floatable gangue minerals. Dispersion leads to an increased recovery rate of these minerals and an accompanying decrease in froth stability."
