Full-face blasting rounds have been used to excavate a 4.6-mdiameter shaft at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's Underground Research Laboratory near Pinawa, Manitoba. Both standard pyrotechnic delay detonators and the newly developed electronic delay detonators (EDD) were used on the project. The full-face blasting technique, employing 89-mm-diameter relief holes and 38-mm diameter blast holes, NG-based explosives, and the regular long period delay detonators, has been standard practice at the site, giving excellent wall control and fragmentation results. The comparison blasts using pyrotechnic detonators and EDDs were carried out to test the operational logistics, timing accuracy and blast results obtained with the latter. The long period pyrotechnic delays ranged from O to 18, with the nominal delay varying between 350 ms and 800 ms. The EDD blasts used the same number of periods, with the respective delay interval between successive periods set precisely at 190 ms and 210 ms for the two blasts. Based on a broad range of critically assessed parameters, the EDD blast results proved to be signficantly superior to those obtained with regular pyrotechnic detonators. The results have been analyzed in detail and the relative merits of the two delay systems have been determined. Alternative designs to derive maximum benefits from EDDs in shaft and tunnel blasts have also been suggested.

In order to ensure the realization this contract, we have done a series of studies on the design of technological process and the selection, layout of the production equipment, and made a success.

The scope of this paper is to examine the growth of safety in an individual and offer new goals in that development. The paper will examine the individual's natural growth and show how it parallels the individual in a safety environment. An individual's new goals for safety include more than the standard accident-free conditions. The new goal strives for a safer working environment where unsafe acts are eliminated through independent knowledge and an individual's growth of interdependency in safety related areas of concern. It will explain how this goal cannot be reached unless driven from the top down in an organization but empowered from the bottom up. Various reference or support organizations will be covered. These organizations deal with safety in mining and explosive use of manufacturing. Other support organizations exist but since this paper is "Back to Basics" only a few major groups will be covered.

In the period 1989 to 1994, the U.S. Bureau of Mines assisted the Office of Surface Mining, Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM) in studying a high-complaint situation near an active surface coal mine. During a research period lasting over three years, a vast number of seismograms were collected and analyzed. From this data, other than obtaining a host of new information pertaining to the effects of surface mine blast on underground mines, it was found that by mounting seismograph velocity transducers at the center of crosscuts in underground mines, seismograms can be obtained which give fairly accurate information about the maximum levels of vibration, and the associated Of stresses and strains, misfiring of blast holes, delay accuracy and delay overlap. The technique of analysis is a simple one; it involves matching of the frequency of wave or wave groups with the shot card information such as rows of holes, number of holes and the cumulative milliseconds of delays used in the blast holes. Any discrepancy that might exist between the frequency of waves and the expected cumulative millisecond delay for a given row or hole eventually will show up as a mismatch in the analysis. This simple technique enables the seismographer to be involved not only in the monitoring of blast peak vibration, but also in making recommendations as to the choice of millisecond delays, reducing the possibility of delay overlaps and reducing the hazards of blast hole cutoffs.

High-speed photography has proven to be an extremely valuable tool for the evaluation of blasting practices in the Warrior Coal Basin. A research project, coordinated by Nelson Brothers Inc. and The University of Alabama's Mineral Engineering Department, has centered on the use of high-speed photography to study and analyze blast performance. A large number of production shots in this region has been filmed and studied. The data obtained from the films have been used to establish graphical relationships between certain blast parameters and overall shot performance. These relationships will be used to develop a computer model that will estimate cast results from a given burden explosive energy combination. This paper describes the methods and procedures used to develop these relationships. The results of the research are discussed along with plans for continuing the research project.

Flyrock is the unwanted throw of rock fragments to excessive distances in opencast blasting. The incidence is relative in nature incorporating the distance of objects of concern like structures within and outside the mine, equipment within the mine & near the blast and persons within and off the mine. Several attempts to predict and defi ne fl yrock made worldwide could not address the problem since the phenomenon is not a regular feature in blasting. This probabilistic nature of fl yrock allows for risk calculation. CIMFR, India developed a Factor of Safety based risk criterion (10, 14) for evaluation of throw/ fl yrock in opencast mines that incorporates all the above in terms of distance and allowable limit of throw – which in turn determines the risk. The criterion provides the blaster a tool for mathematical evaluation of fl yrock risk in terms of a Factor of Safety and threat ratio (defi ned for the 1st time), thereby enhancing confidence when blasting. The method is easy to use and has been applied to several mines in India and the results are signifi cant. This paper details the evolution of the concept and its application in three limestone mines of India and the results obtained. The application of the method for defi ning a fl exible danger zone is also discussed.

No nuclear wastes will be used in the URL program.

In sublevel caving mines, eyebrow break usually gives rise to lower ore recovery and worse safety in the field. Eyebrow break is caused mainly by two tensile stress waves: one from the front surface of a blasting ring, and the other from the roof of the drift. In order to reduce the two waves and finally to reduce eyebrow break at Malmberget mine, we employed two methods: (1) cartridge charge, and (2) double-primers in each blasthole. The two methods were tested in one ore body called ViRi. A total of 10 rings with the cartridge charge and 25 rings with the double-primers were blasted. At the same time a total of 34 ordinary rings were blasted in the same ore body. The result shows that the eyebrow break is 3.0 m for the ordinary rings, 2.3 m for the cartridge charge rings, and 2.1 m for the double-primer rings, respectively. In addition, the ore recovery for the double-primer rings is increased by 3% on the level of ViRi930, compared with that for the ordinary rings.

The Arlanda Link project is for the time being the most interesting project in Sweden, concerning rock and blasting technology. The total amount of rock excavated beneath Arlanda airport comprises 800 000 m³ divided in four parallel tunnels measuring a total length of 8,5 km, with a rock covering of only 5-15 m between the tunnel roof and existing terminal buildings.

Blast damage in open stope mining has been an important concern in controlling ore dilution. Severe damage to the surrounding rock mass can result in the caving of waste rock and/or backfill materials, as well as general instability of the ground. The blast damage study conducted at Kidd Mining Division in 1995 was aimed at measuring the damage zone around blastholes and at identifying other factors which influence the damage. An approach and methodology developed mainly by Blastronics, together with Noranda under a project with the Mining Research Directorate, was adopted for this project. The principle was to combine vibration measurement results with borehole camera observations to derive the blast damage criteria at the specific site. The Holmberg-Persson Equation was used for the regression of near-field vibration data. The damage criteria was examined with both borehole camera observation results and rock elastic and mechanical properties. Details of this methodology, including instrumentation, are reviewed in this paper and an implementation case study of the blast damage evaluation is presented.

Overbreak and damage to rock walls at the perimeter of rock excavation can lead to safety problems due to rock falls and additional costs due to a] extra mucking, b] extra concrete or shotcrete to backfill overbreak, c] additional rock reinforcement, d] additional water inflow and e] additional maintenance of rock walls. To minimize these undesirable effects, there are several perimeter control techniques available (i.e. line drilling, cushion blasting, pre-splitting, smooth blasting, and fracture control blasting) which control perimeter hole spacing, burden and loading to provide a smooth, stable excavation contour. Conventional perimeter control loading and hole spacing is satisfactory for massive, homogeneous formations, but when blasting in weathered or fractured rock closer spacing and very light loading is required.

The detonability of a chemically gassed emulsion explosive has been studied in recent tests, after the study of three micro-balloon sensitized emulsion explosives. Blasting experiments in steel pipes and computer simulation have been carried out. This study showed that the gassed emulsion explosive and the micro-balloon sensitized emulsion explosives have different desensitization features. Namely, the gassed emulsion explosive can recover its detonability very rapidly after the pressure vanishes, in contrary to the micro-balloon sensitized explosives.

This paper details the investigation of a fatal explosion that occurred on April 8, 2011 at a magazine used to store fireworks in Waikele, HI. The fireworks had been confiscated by the Bureau of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement after they were informed that a container shipped to the United States contained illegal fireworks. Four groups of cardboard cartons that were marked as 1.4G (consumer fireworks) were determined to be consistent with the more explosive 1.3G type, commercial display fireworks. The subcontractor retained to destroy these fireworks stored the shipment in the subject magazine and was in the process of disassembling them on the day the explosion occurred.
