It has been common practice for many years to predict and control underwater blasting effects on the basis of certain simplified theories related to the pressures generated by underwater detonations. Unfortunately, two of the most commonly applied concepts in many instances do not provide an accurate modeling of typical field conditions nor the potential for damage. One of these concepts is that the damage potential is related directly to the peak pressure generated by an underwater detonation, without regard to the time history of the pressure pulse. This belief has led to the widespread use of air bubble curtains to reduce peak pressures, without considering the effect that air curtains have on the time history of the pressure pulse. At times, this procedure can be unwise. The other concept is based on the premise that pressure pulses in solids (such as rock) will always be transmitted to nearby water bodies in agreement with the theories of the transmission of plane waves across normal (perpendicular) boundaries. In reality, such conditions are quite rare.

During the past year, the Canadian Centre for Automation and Robotics in Mining (CCARM), McGill University, Montreal, has been involved with INCO Ltd.'s Manitoba Division in investigating the extent and mechanisms of blasthole deviation. Drilling accuracy can well be regarded as perhaps the single greatest "controllable" factor influencing dilution in INCO's open sloping operations. As INCO and other underground mines seek to minimize dilution, while attempting to maximize productivity, issues of drilling accuracy become increasingly significant. It is important therefore, that means exist by which true blasthole trajectories can be determined, so that if needed, modifications to hole loading instructions or redrilling of holes can be ordered, thus avoiding poor blast results.

The Department of Mining and Mineral Engineering at the University of Leeds has a long history of research into the environmental impacts of blasting from quarries and opencast mines. This paper gives an outline of a detailed case study into the structural damaged induced in a rock walled tunnel with a brick lined crown due to close proximity quarry blasting. The test site Taffs Well Quarry is located in South Wales in The United Kingdom and has a disused railway tunnel situated within the south eastern comer of the quarry site. Quarry development plans included the working of this area and therefore the deliberate destruction of the central section of the tunnel.

The effect on an explosive column of the sharp transient stress waves generated during the earlier detonation of adjacent blastholes is of paramount importance to explosives users. Some explosives will sympathetically detonate under these stresses. Others may suffer a transient desensitization, arising from a temporary increase in the density of an explosive beyond certain limits and persisting until the explosive mass relaxes back to the original density. Some explosives are so adversely affected by these stresses that the product suffers immediate and permanent loss of sensitivity. These effects can be clearly seen while blasting in tough conditions such as burn cuts or wedge cuts and in materials, such as coals, that propagate shock waves well.

For over sixty years man has struggled to defeat the natural swamp lands known as the Florida Everglades as demand for land to support the burgeoning population growth in the state continued almost unchecked. Over the past ten years there has been a growing awareness that this land development could wipe out a whole ecosystem in a very short time unless steps were taken to reverse the trends. In 1991, a state law called the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Everglades Protection Act was enacted giving power to the South Florida Water Management Board to condemn certain lands for conversion to manmade swamp lands, designed to filter polluting run-off water from the agricultural lands around Lake Ockeechobee.

Lightning Strikes on Vehicles Transporting Explosives The police in one of the countries in which we operate has asked about the consequences of a lightning strike on a vehicle (box van) carrying detonators and explosives. We have assured them that there is not a problem but they require proof of this.

Blasting is usually required to produce easily-excavated broken rock, while leaving surrounding rock masses as undamaged and stable as possible. In mining applications, it is common to utilise production blasting in the centre of an open pit, and specially developed limits blast designs when blasting adjacent to the excavation perimeter. In open pit blasting, limits blast designs generally include pre-splitting, trim blasts, or buffer blasts, all of which are designed to limit, or eliminate, damage beyond the designed pit wall. This paper reports on the findings of a study of the profile of damage in rock masses surrounding blasts, determined by a combination of vibration monitoring, displacement monitoring using extensometers, and video inspection of open holes drilled at various distances behind blasts. The results obtained suggest that the profile of damage may extend for the full depth of the bench, for distances of up to 12 to 15 metres behind blasts. This suggests that entire berms may be affected by blasting, displaying loss of friction and cohesion along joint and fracture planes. The study has considered production blasts and trim blasts with small diameter blastholes and pre-splits.

We have developed a method for predicting and controlling ground vibration from blasting using a rigorous scientific approach. The method is based upon the superposition of seismic waveforms generated by a single-hole free-face shot, recorded at seismographs deployed in an array that includes environmentally sensitlve locations. Waveforms generated by single-hole shots are shown to be reproducible. The waveforms for each of the sites are used to construct synthetic seismograms for delayed shots based upon linear superposition. A computer code systematically constructs the seismograms for the delayed shots, with incremental delays between holes of 1, 2, or 3 milliseconds (ms). A Fourier amplitude specs-rum is calculated for each synthetic seismogram and the spectra are plotted on a map in delay-frequency space, i.e., each row of the map represents the Fourier spectrum for a blast with a particular delay interval. For single-row shots, the delay between holes in a row is used; for multiple-row shots, the delay between holes In a row is kept constant and the delay between rows is incremented. Over the last years AN has been involved in several accidents and used in criminal bomb making. Therefore authorities and legislators worldwide have given it special attention. This paper is divided into three parts: • The first part will focus on the accidents with AN that have occurred over the last years and possible scenarios based on official investigations. • The second part covers safety and security related issues. • The third part will summarize new legislation that is coming both within European Union (EU) and also on a global scale.

Following localized (i.e. hot-spot) ignition, there is a minimum pressure required for combustion to propagate in water-based commercial explosives. The latter is usually referred to as the ‘Minimum Burning Pressure’ (MBP) of the explosive. In the present work, both an apparatus based on hot-wire ignition and an associated methodology were developed to measure the MBP of water-based explosives. It was demonstrated that the MBP constitutes a sharp pressure threshold below which the probability of inducing sustained burning in these explosives becomes very small. It was found that each emulsion explosive tested has a distinct MBP value, which depends critically on its formulation. It appears that this test may offer a firm basis for the classification of emulsion explosives for regulatory purposes.
