Making a tunnel through solid rock can sometimes be a dangerous task. Many things must be considered in order to complete such a task safely, and efficiently. Prior to starting things must be known such as, the type of rock, the purpose for the tunnel, the destination point, then angle of decent (or ascent). Once these things are known, the method to proceed must be considered. Factors such as cost, feasibility, and time to completion must be taken into account.

The Vale’s Serra Sul mine, also known as S11D project, is one of the world’s largest open pit iron ore mines, located in Brazil’s Amazon region. The mine produces around 90 Mt of high-quality iron ore annually. Its unique orebody enabled the S11D project to adopt a truckless mining system with In-Pit Crushing and Conveying (IPCCs) for ore exploitation and waste stripping. The IPCCs system requires crushing the waste, mainly composed by the jaspilite lithology, and is also conveyed to waste deposits several kilometers away from the mine. Due to Amazon’s environmental restrictions, the project was designed with preliminary geological knowledge, leading to the installation of primary crushers not designed for the hardest jaspilite, with uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) up to 500 MPa. This resulted in low waste crushing performance, affecting stripping ratio and threatening future production. A project was developed to improve the fragmentation of the jaspilite, allowing higher waste IPCC production, and reducing the risk to the production due to low performance of waste crushing and conveying. The first challenge was the independence of the geological and the geomechanical models, while only the geological model was considered in blast designs, the geomechanical model describes six waste groups of jaspilite classified according to their strength. A new geological model was then created to incorporate the geomechanical classification, allowing different blasting design according to the rock strength of the jaspilite. The blasting pattern on most compact jaspilite was reduced 27%, from 22m² to 16m² in 9 7/8” diameter holes, with a proposed theoretical reduction of 23% of the P80, from 326mm to 250mm. The second challenge was the implementation of the new design, as this pattern size and the high powder factor (2.9 kg/m3) were paradigms for such a large iron ore mine. The measured results have shown 25% reduction of the P80, the crushing rate was increased by 17% (230t/h), saving around $2.4 million annually in crushing and conveying system maintenance.

An increase in construction and quarry operations has necessitated blasting activities in areas once considered rural and in the close proximity of transmission pipelines. A method to determine the maximum allowable bending stress by the formulas outlined by the Battelle Memorial Institute report of October, 1962, and the assumed stress comparison with actual measured data is presented. A direct relationship between pipe stress and ground particle velocity is shown, and a method to predict stress by relating stress to charge weight and distance from the shot point is discussed.

As Francis Bacon pointed out long ago, we must understand those laws and "obey" them if we wish to "conquer nature." Bacon was saying that if we plan and engineer in compliance with nature's laws, we'll get a lot more out of the natural system than if we don't, because then we can use the system instead of fighting it.

In this paper, the author points out the need to beware of simple time correlations as proof of cause and effect when comparing building cracks and blasting operations. There is a need to be aware of the many other causes besides blasting which affect buildings. Some of these have histories of cyclic behavior; others have a long-term increasing effect on aging and deterioration, often with poorly defined time histories. Many are so strongly site specific that generic relationships are difficult to quantify.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines investigated flyrock and burden movement from blasting at several limestone and basalt quarries in the upper midwest. Blasts have been studied at 14 different sites using high-speed cinematography. Blasting was accomplished in 75- and 150-mmdiameter holes using a variety of explosives. Films from each blast were analyzed to show burden velocities, observed flyrock distance, and direction of throw in relation to the shot layout. This technique, in some cases, allowed determining point of origin and cause of the flyrock as well as the flyrock range.

Prepare ATF Report of Theft or Loss (ATF Form 5400.5). A Report of Theft or Loss - Explosives Materials must be prepared when it is discovered that explosive materials are missing from inventory. Submit the original to the U.S. Bomb Data Center and keep a copy for your records. The form can be obtained from the ATF Distribution Center or from www.atf.gov. Although the U.S. Bomb Data Center should be notified as soon as possible, Federal law requires notification within 24 hours of the discovery. A full inventory check is also highly recommended (but not required) to locate missing explosives and to prevent future losses.

The publication, RI8507, from the U.S. Bureau of Mines established an envelope equation that related scaled-distance to peak particle velocity in an attempt to predict ground vibration in the design phase of a blast. This has been further modified by Oriard, Dupont, Konya & Konya, and others to develop more refined prediction models for specific situations to obtain better predictions. While these equations can be an ideal starting point for a greenfield blasting project or a project with no given information, these equations can have errors.

"At an Australian iron ore open-cut mine, 129 separate blast patterns (consisting of 38.5 million tonnes /42.4 million US tons, equaling 28% of annual blasted tonnes) were initiated using electronic detonators. 87 patterns were designed as per site methodology using ‘vectorial’ initiation timing sequences (blast direction and relief specified only), while the remaining 42 patterns were designed with interactive initiation timing sequences - hole by hole sequencing based on the measured site specific primary shock wave (P-wave) velocity and distance between blast-holes. The intention of this project was primarily to reduce material size presented to the crushing circuit, and also to determine if productivity benefits could be obtained by the use of interactive timing."

Numerous small- and intermediate-size cratering experiments have been conducted in Piceance Creek Basin oil shale at the Colony and Anvil Points oil shale mines near Rifle, Colorado. The purpose of these experiments was to evaluate scaling as a tool to infer the behavior of large-scale tests from small-scale experiments, to calibrate the hydrodynamic computer codes used to model explosive fragmentation of oil shale, and to investigate the influence of bedding plane orientation, natural joints, fractures, and the grade of oil shale on rock fragmentation.

"Efficiency of blast operations depends on fragmentation, overbreak, muckpile profile anddisplacement, vibration, airblast, flyrock and damage to wall or slope stability. To provide all these conditions at the optimal level, determination of rock mass properties (in-situ block size, joint spacing and orientation) is the very first step during design stage of rock blasting. Image analysis software is used not only to determine the fragmentation level of muckpile but also to characterize the bench face. In this study, an image analysis software was used to determine apparent block size of bench face and to measure blast fragmentation of muckpile. The source of errors and the vital points to be taken into consideration were explained for bench face characterization andfragmentation measurement. Since it provides much better results than previous techniques and it is not intrusive to production process, image analysis technique is considered as one of the most efficient and preferred way for fragmentation analysis. Besides these advantages, there are some weak points of image analysis software. Lighting is one of the most important factors for photographs captured for in-situ block size analysis and fragmentation analysis. Lighting determines shadow formation. In an ideal image, particles are clearly delineated by soft shadows. If shadows are too strong (dark), analysis suffers. Appropriate scale should be replaced onto blast muckpile during site measurements. The location of the scale in image affects the results of analysis. Also, the densityand orientation of discontinuities should be considered during application of image analysis technique to characterize bench faces. In this study, image analysis software was applied in thesandstone, limestone quarries of Istanbul region and an open pit boron mine. All image analysis, evaluations and results were made based on the site measurements."

Blasting liability problems are frequently compounded by a company's inability to effectively communicate with concerned property owners and the lack of adequate complaint documentation. Often, by the time the insurance carrier becomes involved in a blasting claim, the situation has deteriorated to the point that a solution agreeable to both parties is virtually impossible to reach. The insurance carrier, wishing to minimize their lose potential may decide to pay on a somewhat questionable blasting claim rather than be drawn into lengthy civil proceedings that would ultimately end up in front of a jury with little chance for a successful outcome.

This paper reviews, from the historical standpoint, the development of the commonly-used terms such as "No. 6 and No. 8" with regard to detonator strengths. The origin of the strength terminology is reviewed, and the many methods developed to compare the strength of one detonator to another are described, with the good and bad points of each method outlined. The "miniature cartridge test," very highly regarded by both the U.S. Bureau of Mines and Institute of Makers of Explosives in the 1930's and early 1940's, is described in detail, as is a test developed and used by IRECO.

Blasting-induced vibrations can be predicted with high precision, allowing for the optimization of sequence design, delay timing, and charge configurations to minimize their indirect impact on rock masses. This optimization leads to a reduction in peak particle velocity (PPV) and dominant frequency at monitoring points. However, a crucial aspect of slope safety is estimating the degree to which vibrations influence stability through numerical modeling of the dynamic response. Slope stability is closely linked to rock mass strength, the predominant failure mechanism based on discontinuity orientation relative to the slope face, and the pre-existing stability conditions before dynamic alterations occur. Blocks, wedges, and planar failures tend to slide under lower vibration levels and are more susceptible to resonance, particularly in fractured and low-strength rock masses. To evaluate the interaction between rock mass and vibrations, photogrammetry and artificial intelligence were employed to identify discontinuity families at vibration monitoring sites. This data facilitated the development of artificial discontinuity networks (DFN), which replicated a discontinuous medium within a numerical finite element model. The input signal was recorded at the slope base using triaxial geophones and incorporated into a discontinuous numerical model. The output signal was estimated through finite element analysis and subsequently compared with geophone measurements taken at the same location. Based on real-world output signals, damping parameters and the model’s natural frequency were adjusted to align both frequency spectra. Using the calibrated parameters, vibration records from various blasting projects at different distances were applied as input signals until slope failure was induced, thereby defining maximum allowable vibration limits in terms of PPV and frequency at the monitoring point. This approach provided a framework for optimizing sequence designs, charge configurations, and delay timings to enhance slope safety and prevent failure due to blasting-induced vibrations.

Data is presented showing Penetration Rate (PR) versus Force-on-the Bit (FB) and Bit Angular Speed (N). Using this data, it is shown how FB and N each uniquely contribute to the PR for any particular drilling situation. This data represents many mining situations; including coal, copper, gold, iron ore and limestone quarrying. The important relationship between Penetration per Revolution (P/R) and the height of the cutting elements of the bit (CH) is discussed. Drill performance is then reviewed, considering the effect of FB and N on bit life. All this leads to recommendations for the operating values of FB and N for drilling situations where the rock is not highly abrasive and bit replacements are because of catastrophic failure of the bit cone bearings.

RAG Coal West, Inc., Belle Ayr Mine is located in the heart of Wyoming’s rich Powder River Basin coalfield. Belle Ayr utilizes an open pit, truck/shovel operation to strip the overburden off the 70’seam of sub bituminous coal. Our excavation capacities consist of a 301 Marion with a bucket size of 52 cubic yards, and a 4100 XPB P&H with a capacity of 76 cubic yards. Production levels on these machines are closely monitored utilizing the Modular Mining Dispatch system. RAG Coal West, Inc. is a coal mining business that utilizes the effectiveness of teams as one of their strategies. Technicians have a certain amount of control over their own Team Process. The Drilling & Blasting Team is an assortment of blasters with varying experience levels. We have been able to think outside of the box when it comes to certain “proven” methods of blasting.

This research program was undertaken to better understand the factors causing abnormal NOx fumes generation from blasting operations in surface coal mining. More specifically, unusual quantities of nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide have been observed at several surface coal mines in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming. All these mining operations have several points in common: (i) Blasting is performed using gravity loaded emulsions or emulsion/ANFO blends (ii) Unusual NOx (Oxides of Nitrogen) emissions are observed mostly when blasting is conducted in the overburden as opposed to the coal seam itself (iii) The overburden consists of very weakly consolidated ground strata, providing relatively weak confinement conditions for the explosives, and (iv) Significant ground water is observed.

More than 102 epithermal quartz veins have been identified in the area, with variable lengths, thicknesses, orientations and dips that constitute what is possibly one of the most extensive outcropping vein systems on earth.

The use of military-type energetic materials in commercial explosive products is not a new concept. In the United States, the techniques for utilizing significant quantities of surplus military explosive materials by commercial explosive manufacturers dates back to the 1950’s. At times, explosive companies have found surplus military high explosives and propellant materials to be suitable ingredients for their commercial explosive products. The availability of these military-type energetic materials has varied over the past 50 years, as a function of the military’s strategic defense needs and the advances in modern weapon technology. For the most part, the commercial explosives industry has been able to implement methods for safely incorporating military-type high explosives and propellant materials, whenever these surplus materials become available. During the past 5-6 year period, a large amount of military-type energetic materials have once again become available for recycling into commercial explosives. This situation can be attributed to a number of factors, such as the political changes in Europe, the development of more sophisticated weapons systems, and the increased EPA pressures on the U.S. Department of Defense for disposing of surplus energetic materials. As in the past, U.S. commercial explosive manufacturers have made efforts to recycle these surplus materials into their explosive products. This paper describes some of the commercial explosive products that are currently on the U.S. market, which contain rocket and gun propellants as energetic ingredients. Some U.S. explosive companies, such as DYNO NOBEL, ORICA and Slurry Explosive Corporation, have been able to recycle significant quantities of surplus smokeless powder and composite propellants as energetic ingredients into their commercial Blasting Agents. The successes enjoyed by these companies have once again shown recycling into commercial explosive products to be an economically and environmentally sound method for disposing of surplus military-type energetic materials.
