In the commercial evaluation of coal tars, a distillation analysis properly carried out is of considerable importance. Close attention must be given to this operation in order to obtain consistent results and to secure the minimum decomposition of the tar compounds, which in many cases are sensitive to undue heat effects. Low-temperature tars in particular contain compounds of this nature, while in the case of tars produced at high temperatures the large proportion of pitch present has an adverse influence during a distillation. If excessive cracking takes place, the composition of the distillate will naturally vary from the normal, with the result that all the analytical criteria subsequently obtained are affected. Where tars, produced over vide ranges of carbonization temperatures are investigated as in the survey of gas, coke, and by-product making properties of American coals nor being conducted at the United States Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Experiment Station, the method of distillation must necessarily be the sane for all of the tars studied. Also, it must function equally well for both low and high temperature tar, permit accurate fractionation, and reduce adventitious decomposition to a minimum.

THIS REPORT by the Federal Bureau of Mines presents data on water-supply wells used by waterflood operators in North Texas and shows the distribution of permeable source sediments. Averages of well characteristics, including static fluid levels, working fluid levels, net thicknesses, producing rates, and depths, are presented and discussed. Essentially all water used in waterflooding is mineralized water from consolidated sediments. This study is concerned with the geology and distribution of these mineralized source sediments, whereas previous work in this area was predominantly a study of shallow sources of potable water. Tables, isopachous maps, and electric-log cross sections are included to describe the several source aquifers. In general, water-producing capacity increases with depth of the sediments. Wells completed in Cretaceous sediments 82 to 600 feet deep yield 50 to 600 barrels of water daily, whereas those completed in Pennsylvanian sediments 360 to 4,110 feet deep yield 100 to 7,000 barrels daily. Although deeper formations are used where oil and water are produced conjunctively and where large withdrawal rates are required, insufficient well data prevented mapping of deeper formations.

The evaluation of existing rock stresses from measurements of the change in diameter of a borehole that is stress relieved by overcoring has become a common practice, The stress evaluation has been generally based ,on isotropic relations whereas rock in varying degrees is anisotropic. A plane elasticity solution for a circular hole along one axis of an orthotropic medium is adapted for evaluation of in situ stress from borehole deformation measurements. A consistent triaxial testing approach for determining elastic properties of the overcore is also outlined. Comparison of isotropic with anisotropic interpretations of the state of stress show that large errors in evaluation may occur if the anisotropic character of the rock is neglected.

"The potential health effects of quartz-bearing airborne dust in mine and mill atmospheres point to the need for the quantification of quartz content in the source material for determining the source-sink relationships and for choosing applicable control measures. While a standard method exists from a regulatory point of view for the sampling of coal mine atmospheres for determining (i) respirable dust concentrations and (ii) the amount of quartz in the samples, there is no generally accepted standard method for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rocks. Generally, the bulk sample is reduced to a powder for producing quartz analysis samples. Extensive controls arc necessary to ensure representativeness of the analysis samples when these are very minute fractions of the bulk samples. Since the amount of analysis sample is not limited, alternative methods for quartz analysis may also be tried. It is, however, necessary to adopt a procedure which will satisfy several statistical requirements to guarantee representativeness of the quartz analysis samples.In this paper, the important factors in the preparation of quartz analysis samples from the host rocks and bulk samples are discussed. The method developed to prepare the analysis samples is outlined. The results of application of the procedures are presented. The procedure developed for quartz analysis sample preparation is based on sound statistical foundations. The procedure has been validated for reproducibility and homogeneity.The current methods used for quartz analysis in powders are the P-7 infrared spectrometry and quantitative X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Both have similar restrictions concerning the sample characteristics and operational problems, which arc intrinsic to radiation beams, device geometry, mechanics and controls of the radiation behavior. Although improvements can be made in the spectrometers and diffractometers, some of the most important steps are the procedures for analysis sample preparation from bulk samples and for calibration of the instruments. The sample preparation process is often referred to as one of grinding and sizing the bulk sample to generate the powder for the scanning devices. The particle sizes are referred to and their influence emphasized but the representativeness of the sample is assumed. Assuring sample representativeness during the sample preparation procedures is critical.For the sampling of airborne respirable dust in coal mines, the collection devices, the collection procedures and the analysis procedures are defined. This is not true for bulk samples where weights must be reduced thousands of times to generate the analysis samples for the scanning devices. The specifications to be developed may include bulk sample amount, sample reduction procedures, sample particle size distribution and sample amounts. However, the common problem of insufficient sample amount which is often encountered with mine airborne dust samples need not exist for bulk samples. Further, the same bulk sample can yield analysis samples for several experiments. The latter, of course, requires sample homogeneity.Three concepts are important in the selection of any procedure for sample preparation and analysis. These arc accuracy, reproducibility and representativeness. The adopted procedure has to guarantee a homogeneous sample representative of the population, a defined level of accuracy and reproducibility. Important statistical concepts are embedded in these requirements, particularly with respect to estimation and dispersion errors. Accuracy and reproducibility are totally different though not independent concepts. Estimation is related to accuracy and the true value. Dispersion is related to reproducibility and is measured by the classical statistical standard deviation of the distribution of a series of measurements or analysis performed over the same lot or analysis sample. REPORTS received from operating companies by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, indicated marked progress in the reduction of injuries to employees in the coking industry in 1951 as compared with 1950. The fatality rate (0.14) per million man-hours of exposure declined 33 percent and was the second best performance since statistics on the industry were first collected in 1916. The nonfatal-injury rate (10.94), the best since 1940, declined 8 percent and was bettered only in 8 of the past 36 years. The nonfatal rate is based on all injuries resulting in loss of time for more than the remainder of the day on which the injury occurred. The exposure to hazard, as represented by the number of man-hours of work time during the year, was 7 percent higher than in 1950 and, except for the year 1943, was the highest since 1920. The fatality rate for men employed at beehive-coke ovens decreased 16 percent and the nonfatal-injury rate 23 percent, while the man-hours of work time or exposure increased slightly over 16 percent. The fatality and nonfatal-injury rates at byproduct ovens declined 33 and 2 ½ percent, respectively, while the number of man-hours worked increased 6 percent.

Two mine electrical power system simulations are presented. The first is a batch processed procedure capable of modeling a single mining machine consisting of a number of motors operating under various loads. These loads are the mechanical torque loads present at the motor shaft. The second simulation is a more flexible tool for modeling entire mine electrical power systems~ Detailed analyses of bus voltages, transmission-line power flows, and machine behavior are possible. This simulation operates interactively and the power system is configured as the user responds to program generated questions and requests. Development of the theory behind the programming, as well as detailed explanations of the models, is presented. Examples are provided to demonstrate simulation capabilities.

The motor gasoline which is being marketed in the United States this summer is apparently more volatile than the gasoline sold a year ago. In fact the average volatility of this summer's gasoline is almost the same as the average volatility of the gasoline marketed last winter. During the past seven years the Bureau of Mines has made semi-annual surveys of the gasoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the fourteenth in the series. The cities in which samples have been collected have been chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.

This report gives the principles of the method used by the Helium Research Center of the Bureau of Mines when solving nonlinear-regression problems and contains the mathematical equations necessary to accomplish the following objectives: the evaluation of the parameters in such a way that the sum of the weighted squares of the residuals of an experimental observable is a true minimum, regardless of the functional relationship between the variables and these parameters; and the evaluation of all variances and covariances of the parameters by means of the usual approximation of the law for the propagation of errors.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines describing; gypsum mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the, United States. These papers are designed to dissemminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole; on the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and. study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation shall ensue. The following report deals specifically with the mining and primary crushing methods employed at the plant of the Ebsary Gypsum Co., Inc., Wheatland, Monroe County, N. Y. This company is capable of maintaining a maximum yearly production of 220,000 tons of crushed gypsum, thereby ranking as one of the largest gypsum operators of the State. The methods and practices employed typify the standard methods followed by gypsum producers in western Now York State, The bed of gypsum mined lies only 35 feet beneath the surface and is above average thickness for this vicinity.

The probable inadequacy of physical tests of coke for the purposes for which they are made has been a subject for discussion for many years. However, little has been published in this connection, even though most workers in the field believe that the physical properties of coke are of major importance in its utilization in the steel and allied industries. In fact, the reproducibility of the recognized tests is largely unknown or can only be approximated. This situation occasions many difficulties when attempts are made to judge the coke-production qualities of various coals or coal blends. During World War II the Coke Production Committee, composed of representatives from industry and the Solid Fuels Administration, concluded that study of existing testing methods and possible improvements would be of material assistance in answering questions relating to coke quality. Since that time the Bureau of Mines has taken samples of coke produced in industrial slot-type coke ovens in connection with studies aimed at extending coking-coal reserves by adding to the list of sources known to be suitable for this purpose. Testing procedures on these cokes were arranged so that the data obtained would yield information on (1) the degree of precision of tests commonly used in the industry, (2) the causes of the known poor reproducibility in several of the physical tests, and (3) possible improvements or modifications of existing physical testing procedures.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a field study of respirable dust concentrations at an underground room-and-pillar oil shale mine and at the aboveground milling facility to determine the dust generation sources, personal respirable exposure, characteristic minerals, and size distribution of the dust. Major dust sources in the mine were the scaling and blasthole drilling operations, and major dust sources in the processing mill were the screening and crushing operations. Principal minerals found in the airborne respirable dust were albite, analcite, calcite, dolomite, quartz, and orthoclase. The average alpha-quartz content of mine and mill respirable dust samples was 4.1 pct and 15.5 pct, respectively. Carbonaceous material such as diesel particulate accounted for approximately 75 pct of the respirable particulate found in the mine. The average coefficient of variance of respirable dust concentrations measured with approved personal dust samplers in the mine and mill was 7.6 pct, the best precision observed to date with the personal dust sampler operated in the field.

Electrorefined vanadium with additions of up to 5 percent by weight of yttrium, cerium , lanthanum , praseodymium, neodymium, and samarium was melted to ingots in a nonconsumable electrode arc in a helium atmosphere . The ingots were rolled into strips and evaluated for the effect of the alloying elements on hardness , tensile strength , ductility , recrystallization temperature , and microstructure . Except for samarium , average additions of alloying elements of 1 to 2 weight - percent resulted in the retention of 0.12 to 1.05 weight - percent in the alloys and reduced the ultimate tensile strength from about 48,000 to approximately 30,600 psi . The corresponding yield stress (0.2 percent offset ) was reduced from about 40,700 to approximately 20 , 200 psi . Diamond pyramid hardness (DPH) was reduced from 117 to an average of 62 kg /mm² . Increased malleability at room temperature resulted with yttrium and all rare - earth- metal additions , except samarium , particularly with more than 0.25 weight - percent additions . Decreasing oxygen contents corresponded with the changes noted in the mechanical properties of the alloys . The recrystallization temperature of electrorefined vanadium was reduced from approximately 950 ° to 800 ° C. Yttrium or a rare- earth metal content , except samarium , in excess of 0.1 weight - percent in vanadium produced a second phase suggestive of an eutectic which indicated a possible maximum solubility of less than 0.1 weight - percent for both room and elevated temperatures .

It was the goal of this project to develop training materials specific to two areas of the mining industry: (1) safe use and care of the self-contained self-rescuers, and (2) awareness and avoidance of electrical hazards. This report describes the development of the following training material: Instructor's modules for the OCENCO EBA 6.5, CSE AU-9A1, and PASS 700E self-contained self-rescuers; and a textbook, slide tapes, and accident case study scenarios for mine electricity, and a computer based instructional package on mine electricity and electrical hazards. The report concludes that additional efforts are needed in mine training and four recommendations are made: (a) tailor existing materials to fit specific mine sites, (b) develop and evaluate computer based instructional material, (c) develop parallel training materials for metal and non-metal mines and, (d) develop additional training materials for preparation plants and surface areas of underground mines.

A reconnaissance study of kyanite-group mineral deposits in the Northwest has revealed large exploitable reserves of the mullite-forming raw materials in the Woodrat Mountain and Goat Mountain districts of north-central Idaho. Potential coproducts or byproducts are garnet and muscovite mica. The Woodrat Mountain district contains garnet-kyanite-mica schist, which has been traced for 6 miles and may extend farther. Surface samples average 29 percent kyanite and contain up to 15 percent garnet. Inferred reserves of strippable ore with a low waste-to-ore ratio, and containing more than 15 percent kyanite, are more than 3 billion short tons. The Goat Mountain district contains several kyanite-mineral zones. Samples of the richest zones average from 10 to 20 percent kyanite minerals and represent about 200 million short tons of strippable rock. Beneficiation tests indicate that the kyanite minerals and garnet can be concentrated by a combination of gravity, flotation, and electromagnetic methods. Reserves in these deposits are sufficient to satisfy any foreseeable domestic and export demand. However, the freight tariff to reach the nearest major users of kyanite (located in the Midwest) has discouraged development of western kyanite resources. Western demand of a magnitude to support a moderate to large milling operation has not yet been developed. However, there is some foreign market potential. If a garnet byproduct could be prepared and sold for coated abrasive products or as grinding grains, an offset possibly could be gained to a por¬tion of the mining and milling costs for the Pacific Northwest producer. Such byproduct values would offer a means for expanding the geographic market areas as well as the regional market potential.

The Florida phosphate industry, which supplies about three-quarters of the domestic phosphate fertilizer, produces tremendous volumes of phosphatic clay wastes (slimes). These clays retain a high percentage of water for extended periods of time. The clays also pose an environmental hazard because the disposal technique involves aboveground storage behind earthen dams. Although much research has been undertaken by numerous organizations to dewater slime, no completely satisfactory solution has been developed. In June 1972, a cooperative effort by the Federal Bureau of Mines and the Florida phosphate mining industry was initiated to develop a solution for dewatering the Florida phosphatic slimes. This report discusses various aspects of the slimes problem, reviews past research, makes recommendations for future research, and includes a bibliography of references and patents dealing with the subject.

The Bureau of Mines, as part of an agreement with the Bear Coal Co., Somerset, Col o., evaluated the response of a coal mine roof to time lapse. Time lapse, the interval between exposure and support of the roof, was studied using both instrumentation and statistics. Instrumentation studies were designed to equate displacement and rates of displacement with areas of roof left unsupported from 15 minutes to more than 4 days. A statistical study was completed to compare roof fall occurrence with time lapse intervals encountered during normal room-and-pillar mining. Results from this investigation show time lapse, in the Bear mine, to he insignificant with respect to roof stability after installation of permanent support.

A series of tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the best means of reducing noise generated by the detonating cord that is utilized for trunklines in quarry blasting. Ten different types of detonating cord were tested and evaluated for their acoustic qualities. The results of the investigation showed that noise levels produced by "low-core-load-per-foot" detonating cord "not covered" were lower than those produced by "high-core-load-per-foot" detonating cord covered with 6 inches of unconsolidated material.
