With the rapid depletion of the Peerless Coal Co.'s mine in Spring Canyon, it was necessary, if the company was to remain in the coal-producing business, to look to the development of a new property or to acquire a mine already developed. After careful investigation of several operating properties it was decided by the officials of the company to take over the lease on an undeveloped acreage held by a private party in Price Canyon, about 3 miles north of Castle Gate, Utah.

This paper describing the mining practices at the Block P mine of the St. Joseph Lead Co. at Hughesville, Mont., is ore of a series of similar papers being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various miner of the United States. The bauxite diagram presented as figure 1 was developed to clarify, by graphic means, the theoretical chemical constituents of gibbsite-kaolinite-type bauxite for all possible proportions of these two minerals from pure gibbsite to pure kaolinite. The tables in the report reflect the same date. The diagram provides (1) a graphic representation of the relations of constituents with respect to a ill possible percentages of alumina and silica, (2) a basis for verifying the accuracy of analyses of gibbsite-kaolinite bauxite, and (3) a basis for estimating the type and proportion of alumina hydrate and/or silicate minerals that may be present in gibbsite-kaolinite-type bauxite. The diagram, with accompanying interpretations and use formulas, will be useful to those connected with the mining and processing of bauxite.

This work was undertaken to determine the feasibility of making mixed diborides of two metals directly from the metal oxides , boron carbide and carbon . The diborides (Ti , V ) , B₂ , (Ti , Cb) B₂ , and ( Ti , Ta ) B₂ were prepared in a crucible resistance furnace at 2,100 ° C , and X- ray- diffraction analyses showed each was a homogeneous solid solution containing approximately equal molar contents of the given diborides . The diboride powders were cold - pressed ; sintered to 2,300 ° C , and evaluated for mechanical strength , rate of oxidation , and resistance to molten metals . The diboride ( Ti , Ta ) B₂ exhibited the best mechanical properties ; the diboride ( Ti , Cb ) B₂ , the lowest cumulative rate of oxidation . The mixtures were stable in the presence of molten aluminum and copper but were attacked by molten Ti , Zr , and Cr .

As of June 30, 1970, Federal regulations required the operator of each underground coal mine to maintain the average concentration of respirable dust below legislative standards. As of March 1, 1971, over 152,000 respirable dust samples have been processed by the Bureau of Mines. Approximately 75 percent of underground working sections are being sampled in accordance with Federal regulations. Results indicate that 72 percent of the sections which have completed at least one basic sampling cycle are below 3.0 mg/m3, the standard in effect under the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (P.L. 91-173). Notices of Violation were issued on 1,670 underground mines for failure to begin a sampling program; Withdrawal Orders were issued in 64 of these instances. Notices of Violation were issued on 1,121 sections where applicable dust levels were exceeded; Withdrawal Orders were issued in seven of these instances. There are 381 mining sections currently operating on permit; from the interim Compliance Panel.

"The interaction of amorphous silica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O,, C2H,OH, C,H,NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy, It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction of surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C,H,NO > C2H2OH > H2O.The use of IR spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature,"" For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1. Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-6 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity,7-9 catalysis,10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated-have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8N0), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by IR spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples17 have used transmission IR spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties, In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18,19 Moreover, according to a recent paper,20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry, In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H5OH, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface IR modes, Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents, Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16,17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification, Details of this work are given below,The Cab-O-Sil samples of silica used here were obtained from the Cabot Corporation of Tuscola, IL, In our earlier studies,14,20 we have shown these particles to be amorphous and about 0.05 am in size, For coverage of these particles with H20 and C2H50H, the following procedure was employed. This paper is one of a series being published by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods and practices used in mining and preparing crushed stone for market. Performance, in terms of units of work or tons produced per machine and per operator man-hour, is given whenever that information can be obtained. Direct operating costs are useful for comparing different methods and are included, if available. In addition to describing equipment and methods used} the Bureau considered it desirable to discuss the engineering reasons for the choices that have been made. This paper is particularly concerned with operation of the Camak quarry and plant of the Weston-Brooker Co. The quarry and plant are near Cedar Rock, north of State Highway No. 80 and east of Middle Creek in Warren County, Ga., and about 40 miles west of Augusta. Rail access is by a spur line of the Georgia Railroad from Camak, 5 miles southwest. The main office of the company is at Cayce, S. C.

The electrokinetic (zeta) potentials of a charcoal granite in an aluminum chloride (AlCl3) solution and in an oleylanunonium acetate (C18H35NH3+ -OCOCH3) solution have been correlated with the specific damping values as measured by the pendulum sclerometer. This investigation shows that the pendulum specific damping attains a minimum at the isoelectric point for the charcoal granite-aluminum chloride and charcoal granite-oleylammonium acetate systems, and thus indicates that the penetration of the diamond points is a maximum at the isoelectric point.

The practice of roof bolting, now recognized as an effective method of support, is based largely on rule of thumb. Among the various applications of bolting, the support of stratified mine roof is by far the most common. The general principles relating to this type of reinforcement are presented in two companion reports; the first describes the function of the bolts, the bolting pattern, and the behavior of bolted roof (1), 2/ and the second describes the design of the models and the theory of the experimental method (2). This report presents a rational method for designing systems of vertical bolts to reinforce horizontally bedded mine roof, developed from model tests. The structure treated herein may be described as follows: The immediate roof, consisting of beds of like material and equal thickness with no bond between them, is reinforced by vertical bolts installed in straight lines across the opening; the case of suspension is excluded because the bolts are assumed not to extend above the immediate roof. The assumption is made that the behavior of the lowest bed approximates that of a rectangular plate clamped along two opposite sides (the ribs). These specifications represent approximately the roof conditions encountered in mining bedded deposits of all kinds - coal, potash, iron ore, etc. Thus, for the design of a roof-bolting system a quantitative solution to the following problem is required: For a roof composed of beds of given thickness and physical properties, how does the support depend upon the length, spacing, and tightness of the bolts?

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents an evaluation of the coal mining industry's impact on the economy of Pike County, KY. A software package called IMPLAN was used to perform the analysis. The results of this study show that coal mining was the primary income producing industry in Pike County in 1990, accounting for about 46% of the county's Total Industry Output, and 21% of the total employment.. Coal production in that year amounted to 29.6 M mt (32.6 M st). Two alternate economic scenarios were developed to study the potential effects of changing coal market conditions on the county. Scenario A assumes market changes result in a coal production increase of 4.5 M mt/yr (5.0 M st/yr), and scenario B assumes a decrease of 4.5 M mt/yr (5.0 M st/yr). Scenario A would result in a 15.3% rise in the value of Pike County's Total Industry Output, adding a total of 1,663 jobs (+6.1%) in all sectors in the county. Scenario B would have the opposite effect, decreasing the Total Industry Output and employment by identical amounts. Such knowledge would allow local and regional officials to anticipate the economic and social impacts of shifts in coal production, and plan accordingly to mitigate impending changes.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of small amounts of cobalt in nickel on the tensile properties and hardness of representative types of austenitic stainless steels . Cobalt substitutions for nickel up to 2 weight - percent were made in types 302 and 309 stainless steels . Data were obtained at room temperature for tensile strength , yield strength , percentage elongation , percentage reduction in area , and hardness . In type 302 steels , tensile strength and hardness increased with increased percentages of cobalt , percentage elongation and reduction in area decreased , and yield strength showed little change . Property changes were largely due to the reduction of nickel content rather than to the addition of cobalt . In type 309 steels , only minor variations were observed for the properties investigated ; the effects of the relatively snall cobalt substitutions and nickel reductions were somewhat reduced by the higher total alloy content .

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and field experiments to determine tne amount of permeability reduction in uranium sandstone after its exposure to different drilling fluids. Seven polymer and two bentonite fluids were laboratory-tested in their clean condition, and six polymer fluids were tested with simulated drill cuttings added. Sandstone cores cut from samples collected at an open pit uranium mine were the test medium. The clean fluid that resulted in the least permeability reduction was an hydroxyethyl cellulose polymer fluid. The greatest permeability reduction of the clean polymers came from a shale-inhibiting synthetic polymer. Six polymer fluids were tested with simu-lated drill cuttings added to represent field use. The least permeability reduction was obtained from a multipolymer blend fluid. A field experiment was performed to compare how two polymer fluids affect formation permeability when used for drilling in situ uranium leaching wells. For this test, the polymer fluid with the best laboratory results (multipolymer blend) was compared with a commonly used polymer fluid (guar gum) that gave poorer laboratory results. When fluid injection rates for the four wells drilled with the guar gum were compared with those for the four drilled with the multipolymer blend, no statistically significant difference was found.

Studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to develop a method for fabricating Sm-Co permanent magnets. This method consisted of arc-melting, crushing and grinding the alloy, alining and pressing the powder, and sintering the green compacts. Results indicated that the optimum composition was 36.7±0.3 weight-percent Sm and 63.3±0.3 weight-percent Co. This composition was obtained by blending together Sm2C07 and SmCo5. The maximum values exper¬imentally obtained were MHC = 27.4 kOe, BHc = 7,510 Oe, Br = 7,810 G, and (BH)max = 15.1 MGOe. The optimum sintering temperatures and grinding times for maximum MHc and (BH)max were determined. Lowering the grinding temperature from 0° C to -60° C resulted in a significant increase of magnetic properties.

The method for determining oil and water saturations described herein has been used successfully for several years in the core laboratories of the Bureau of Mines. The apparatus constructed according to the original specifications has proved very satisfactory; in fact, it has been widely adopted by core laboratories throughout the petroleum industry. The writers have found that the method gives reproducible results, the degree of accuracy depending largely on the attention to details given by the operator. The relative importance of these details of procedure and the design of the apparatus are discussed in this report. In September 1940, the Bureau of Mines published a report describing a method used in its laboratories for the determination of the water content of oil-field cores. The procedure was essentially the same as that adopted by the American Society for Testing Materials for the determination of the water content of petroleum products, although the apparatus and technique were altered slightly to increase the precision of the method and to adapt it to the characteristics of the material to be tested. The report also contained a description of the method used at that time in the Bureau’s core laboratories for measuring the oil content of a core, utilizing the sample on which the water-saturation determination had been made. The procedure involved the transfer of the weighed sample, from which the water had been distilled and measured, to a Soxhlet extractor and the removal of the remaining oil by means of a suitable solvent. Soon after the report was published, the water-determination apparatus described therein was modified so that both the oil and water contents of a core sample could be determined simultaneously. This method, which has been described by Yuster, is now widely used throughout the industry.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted Cu exchange tests for six common clays under simulated in situ leaching conditions. Regression equations were obtained from the data expressing the Cu exchange capacity as a function of Cu concentration, pH, and temperature. Using these equations, an analysis was made of the impact each clay could have on overall Cu recovery. The results suggest that Ca and Na montmorillonite clays could have a major impact on Cu recovery and that attapulgite and illite clays could have a smaller, but still significant, impact. Kaolinite and ripidolite clays pose little threat to loss of Cu from in situ leaching solutions.

The operation of combustion engines of various types at high altitudes and other combustion processes at reduced pressures have made it desirable to determine limits of flammabilities -under these conditions. Experiments carried out by the Bureau of Mines have shown that although natural gas-air mixtures become more difficult to ignite as the pressure is reduced below atmospheric, with a suitable source of ignition the limits of flammability are as wide at 175 mm mercury absolute as they are at atmospheric pressure.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has designed and tested a system called the Bag and Belt Cleaner Device (B&BCD) to reduce dust levels in and around the bag conveying and stacking process. The device physically cleans either 22.7 kg (50 lb) or 45.4 kg (100 lb) paper bags by using a combination of brushes and air jets. It is completely self-contained and is kept under negative pressure by a baghouse to ensure that dust and product removed from the bags during cleaning does not flow into the work environment and contaminate workers. The bags travel through the device on a chain conveyor, which permits any product or dust cleaned from the bags to fall into a hopper at the bottom of the device and be recycled back into the process via a screw conveyor. Once exiting the B&BCD, the outside of the bags and the conveyor are essentially product and dust free. The B&BCD was evaluated at two mineral processing plants to determine reductions with the device in use. The results of both field evaluations showed that the amount of product removed from the outside of the bags varied from 77 to 93 pet.

The objective of this Bureau of Mines publication Is to present a nomograph that provides a fast, convenient method for estimating hydrocarbon lease bonus bids for offshore acreage in the Gulf of Mexico. Discounted cash flow analyses were computed from a model derived to show the costs necessary to explore, acquire, develop, produce, and abandon a 5,000-acre block of offshore acreage, and the estimated income from the sale of the hydrocarbons produced from the block. The range of the variables in the financial analyses used to construct the nomograph are prices of oil, $2.50 to $5.00; recoverable hydrocarbon reserves, 44,651,476 to 127,575,645 barrels; and discounted cash flow (DCF) rates of return, 5.0 to 57.2 percent. A total of 1,234 sets of DCF data were used to construct the nomograph. The range of bonus bids shown on the nomograph is from 2 to 90 million dollars ($400 to $18,000 per acre).

Heats of solution of yttrium chloride and oxide in hydrochloric acid were measured by Bureau of Mines researchers. Using the heat of combustion of yttrium mentioned in the literature, the Bureau calculated the heat of formation of yttrium chloride to be -239.16 + 0.50 kcal./mole. The Bureau experiments gave evidence that the heats of solution of yttrium chloride from the literature are mostly too low because of water and/or oxychloride impurities. Heat of combustion of yttrium (8)3/ and its heat of solution in hydrochloric acid (2, 14) have been measured. The earlier heat of solution measurement (2) is unreliable because of possible potassium contamination (4). Heat of solution of yttrium chloride has been measured by three researchers (3, 9, 15), who obtained widely different results. Spedding and Flynn (14) report the heat of formation of yttrium chloride as -232.69 kcal./mole from their solution studies. The present work was designed to check the reported heats of solution of yttrium chloride and to determine the heat of solution of yttrium oxide. The latter measurement would allow the results of solution and combustion data for yttrium to be intercompared.

Measurements of vapor pressure can be used to determine the thermodynamic activities of the components of metallic solutions . The determination of activity by this method requires accurate values for the vapor pressure of the pure component and for its partial pressure above the alloy solution . This investigation was conducted to measure the vapor pressure of liquid manganese for use in future studies of the activity of manganese in various liquid alloys . In related investigations in the Bureau's Pyrometallurgy Laboratory , vapor pressures of copper , iron and nickel have been measured and activit 4 5 6 have been determined in the iron- copper and iron- nickel systems . Difficulties were experienced with manganese which were not encountered in the previous investigations . Manganese oxidizes readily and greater care was needed to maintain an oxygen- and moisture - free atmosphere in the furnace . In addition , liquid manganese wet the refractories and there was a tendency to foam and splash on introduction of the carrier gas . Because of these difficulties several variations in the experimental procedure were studied . These were first tested with silver which has a vapor pressure of the same order of magnitude as manganese but is relatively inert at high temperatures . Although no significant changes in the original procedure resulted from this work, considerable data were obtained for silver and have been included in this report . Bauer and BBrruunnnneerr7/ have reported the only extensive investigation of the vapor pressure of liquid manganese . However , their results are not consistent with the data obtained by McCabe and Hudson for solid manganese . Measurements of the vapor pressure of silver have been reported by McCabe and Birchenal1,2/ Schadel and Birchenall , 10/ Harteck , 11 / Fischer , 12/ and von Wartenberg.13 / Generally , these investigators conducted their measurements at lower temperatures than were used in this study .
