"The X-ray method of quantitative determination is advantageous because it permits determination of compounds rather -than ions or elements; for example, the direct determination of quartz in silicates,4/,5/,6/ The method also takes into account the finest particles of a sample, which may be lost in wet chemical methods because of solubility or in petrographic methods because of limitation of the microscope. The sample is usually reduced to a powder and is easily prepared,7/ only a few milligrams of material being necessary. The sample and its chemical composition are not destroyed and may be used for further analysis by X-ray diffraction or by other methods.This paper presents in detail some of the more essential problems that arise in the application of X-ray diffraction to quantitative chemical analysis, Photometric measurements are discussed in connection with line intensities and the choice of X-ray film. The internal standard method, successfully used in spectrographic analysis, is applied.Copper K-alpha X-rays from a demountable research-type X-ray tube were used with a camera of 20 centimeters radius with a cast-lead-slit collimating system. A combination of a tilted wedge and a lead-slit collimating system permitted irradiation of a large amount of sample with X-rays. This tended to minimize errors due to possible inhonogeneity of the sample, to decrease the time of exposure, and to keep the lines on the X-ray film to a minimum width. There was sufficient dispersion of the lines for satisfactory analysis of most samples. Power was furnished the tube by a. source of constant high potential consisting of a synchronous motor generator furnishing 500-cycle power to a 100-kv. transformer, rectifying valves, and a condenser filter circuit. The X-ray tube was operated as a gas-type tube at 35 kv, and 20 ma,, the exposure times varying from 1 to 2 hours. The constant output of X-rays from the tube, indicated bar an exposure meter built for the purpose, was satisfactory.The recording microphotometer8/has been described. It was found preferable to a nonrecording instrument for measuring blackening of lines above a background on X-ray films. This background, which usually occurs, is sometimes complicated by numerous peaks from lines of complex diffraction patterns. is microphotometer record of the pattern, therefore, facilitates the location of the background 'and the measurement of the heights of the peaks and thus contributes to the accuracy of a determination."

A previous report of the Bureau of Mines dealt with the toxicity of dichlorodifluoromethane, a new refrigerant that has a remarkably low toxicity. Continued research by the Frigidaire Corporation and toxicological experiments performed in the Laboratory of Applied Physiology of the University of Cincinnati revealed another organic fluoride, dichlorotetrafluoroethane, whose toxicity also appeared to be of a very low order and whose physical and chemical properties make it suitable for refrigeration purposes. In addition to low toxicity, safety in its use is further enhanced by its physical properties, which permit the design of equipment that operates at comparatively low pressures and hence mitigates the dangers and problems of leakage. The investigation described in this report was performed by the Bureau of Mines at the request and with the cooperation of the Frigidaire Corporation.

The preface of the United States Bureau of Mines Manual of First Aid Instruction contains the following paragraphs: One of the most important inquiries that Congress has authorized the Bureau of Mines to conduct relates to health condi- tions among those engaged in the mineral industries. Investigations made early with a view to bettering these conditions demonstrated the need of prompt care of injured miners, as, under the difficulties inherent to mining and other mineral industries; wounds seemingly unimportant, if not treated promptly, may become infected and possibly cause permanent crippling or even death of the porach. In the past many seriously injured persons have been treated by fellow workers ignorant of approved means of treatment and transportation and have been handled in such a manner as to cause suffering and to accentuate injuries to such a degree as to bring about permanent disablement. Accordingly, the need of general instruction in first aid became apparent. It must be recognized that the conditions in and about the mines, mills, smelters, quarries, oil fields, etc., usually present difficulties not found in large industrial centers where experienced surgeons are available and hospitals close at hand. Many mines are isolated and, when an accident occurs several miles underground, there may be a serious lapse of time before the injured person can be brought to the surface and taken to the hospital or given attention by a sur- geon who may have to come a long distance. Under such conditions it has been frequently demonstrated that, if effective first aid is not given, the injured person may die or become permanently crippled... First-aid instruction has been found to be an excellent aid3in pre- venting accidents. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has patented and transferred to industry an abrasive-enhanced water-jet rock drill. This drill incorporates three novel components: a collimator, jet deflectors for cutting clearance, and an unpressurized swivel, which rotates at 1,000 rpm while passing 20 gpm of an abrasive slurry flowing at 1,000 ft/s. Drilling occurs through the action of a 10,000-psi, 2O-gpm water jet into which is entrained 72 lb/min of abrasives. The pumps, hoses, and fittings are those commonly used in the water-jet-cleaning industry. Only inexpensive, common sandblasting abrasives are used. This drill can cut through hard rocks with moderate-pressure jets; e.g., rocks with a compressive strength of 73,000 psi can be drilled with a 1O,OOO-psi abrasive jet. In addition to drilling holes, the drill can cut deep, narrow kerfs; collar a hole at any angle; drill through rubble; and chamber holes. The development of the abrasive jet drill is a significant advance in the state of the art of hard-rock drilling. The Government of the United States has licensed the abrasive jet drill patent to Weatherford Water Jetting Systems.

"The accompanying tabulation gives the results of a series of operating tests on two types of small stokers. One was an inclined, natural-draft, moving-grate, overfeed ""hand-stoker"" fired and manipulated by hand; the other was. a horizontal, forced-draft, stationary-grate, underfeed, mechanical unit-stoker operated by an electric motor. These were installed as shown by the accompanying sketches (figs. 1 and 2) under horizontal return tubular boilers of a nominal rating of 150 bl.h.p. each.The steam load carried by these boilers was a rather typical heating load. It was fairly constant and of about 30 bl.h.p. throughout the summer months, with small variation between day and night. During the winter months the daily variations were dependent upon the outside temperature. The boilers were banked a considerable part of the night.As noted in the table, two kinds of coal were used. The size of one kind was run-of-mine and the other 11/4 inch nut and clack. These coals from two different mines of the New River district both caked considerably during burning, the nut and slack more than the other. Analyses of the coal were as follows:"

Laboratory equipment, which simulates abrasive impacts between steel and minerals that might be present during pneumatic transport of coal, was used by the Bureau of Mines to characterize the potential explosion hazard of such collisions in an atmosphere of fine coal dust, air, and methane. A variety of coal mine rock materials, including sandstone, limestone, and pyrite-bearing limestone, were impacted with specimens of pipeline steel. Tests were con-ducted in atmospheres containing zero to 6.4 vol-pct methane mixed with zero to 300 mg/l coal dust. Coal dust in air alone was not ignited by abrasive impacts, but additions of as little as 1 vol-pct methane to the coal dust and air mixture resulted in ignitions. Steel impacting against sandstone caused ignitions in mixtures of coal dust, air, and methane, and the probability for ignitions increased with an increase in methane. No ignitions occurred with impacts of steel on lime-stone or pyrite-bearing limestone, even when large showers of sparks were produced. Studies of the effect of tangential collision velocity showed that no ignitions of coal dust, air, and methane occurred below 900 fpm (4.57 m/sec). Ignitions in coal-air-methane mixtures were found to be caused by a hot friction-induced smear on the impacted rock at the impact site rather than by sparks. High-speed photography was used to verify this observation.

SYNOPSIS OF LAW All useful substances of the mineral Kingdom belong originally to the State. The soil and subsoil are regarded as two distinct parts, the latter extending indefinitely in depth (Art. 2). The subsoil is under the dominion of the State, which may either abandon it to common use, grant it gratuitously to the owner of the soil, or alienate it, in return for an annual fee, to any individual or association that applies for it. The logic leading to the development of the experiments in this paper already has been stated in Part I,3 but is briefly as follows: The results of the batch-grind experiments in which time of "grind" and fineness of finished product were the variables, strongly indicated (1) that batch grinding involving a single grind could not be operated under any condition to give maximum mill efficiency, (2) that the, sieve analysis of the feed charge in the mill materially affected the efficiency of the mill, and (3) that the percentage of finished product in the mill is a vital factor in ball-mill efficiency. A laboratory closed-circuit grind technic designed to simulate present closed-circuit grinding suggested itself, in which: a ball mill and a classifier constitute the grinding unit. The features of the closed-circuit grinding system are: (1) Short large diameter mills, (3) rapid flow of pulp through the mill, (3) continuous automatic removal of finished product from the system, and (4) high circulating loads. The high circulating load is a result if the short length of the Mill - that is, of the time the charge remains in the mill - and the small percentage of finished material produced during each circuit of the feed through the mill.

Demand for arsenic trioxide exceeded supply in 1978 and 1979, and the major domestic and foreign producers allocated available supplies to customers. Major demand has been from the cotton-growing and wood-preserving industries. Ample supplies of arsenic metal produced in the United States and Sweden were available in 1978 and 1979. Major demand for metal was from the automobile battery industry in Japan, Europe, and the United States. Legislation and Government Programs.-The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), promulgated the final standard on the occupational exposure to inorganic arsenic, effective August 1, 1978.2 The need for the standard was a result of OSHA's conclusion that inorganic arsenic is a human carcinogen. The purpose of the standard was to minimize the incidence of lung cancer among workers exposed to inorganic arsenic. The maximum exposure to arsenic was lowered from the previous ceiling of 500 micrograms per cubic meter of air to 10 micrograms per cubic meter over an 8-hour time period. OSHA had originally recommended a ceiling limit of 4 micrograms per cubic meter in January 1975. Provisions of the new standard require exposed employees to wear respirators and undergo continuous medical monitoring. Other provisions establish regulated areas limited to authorized employees and require the construction of special lunch-room and worker hygiene facilities and the posting of signs and labels warning of the presence of arsenic. The new arsenic standard will have a significant economic impact on copper, zinc, gold, and lead smelters as well as consumers of arsenic trioxide. A number of copper companies have joined together to contest the standard in court. However, measures to comply with the standard have been initiated by ASARCO Incorporated at its Tacoma, Wash. plant.

"During the past several years, alunite from the Marysvale (Utah) region has been the subject of investigation by the Electrometallurgical Section of the Bureau of Mines. The nature and occurrence of this mineral, with considerable data on the Utah deposits, together with a number of results of preliminary experiments, have been given in a previous report. 6/ The geology of the Marysvale region has been reviewed recently. 7/The present paper reports the results obtained by a method involving the sintering of alunite with boric acid and subsequent treatment of the sinter to produce alumina and potassium sulphate.The preliminary work just mentioned had given indications of the separation of sulphate salts high in potassium from fusions of alunite with borax glass.During the course of further work along those lines, fusions of boric acid and alunite were tried. No separation of salts was obtained, but it was observed that rather complete removal of so3 from the alunite occurred and that the sinter could be leached with water to give a solution contain¬ing most of the potash and a residue containing most of the alumina. The United States is the world's largest consumer of tin and depends entirely upon foreign imports for its major source of supply. Only a small quantity of tin is produced on the North America continent. The advent of the war in Europe in 1939?brought a threat to our foreign sources of supply, and the Congress took steps to forestall shortages of tin and other metals. By authority of the Strategic Minerals Act, passed by Congress in 1939, and subsequent legislation, the Bureau of' Mines ?and Geological Survey conducted investigations of domestic tin deposits. Most of the tin that has been produced in North America came from the Seward Peninsula, Alaska.

Monitoring the miner respirable quartz dust exposure for compliance with U.S. federal regulations is mandatory to protect the health of coal miners. However, there is no technique available for the direct measurement of the respirable quartz dust concentration in the mining environment. The only means to estimate the respirable quartz dust concentration is to perform an analysis of the respirable dust sample collected, which contains both coal and quartz dust as well as other mineral constituents. For samples collected at coal mines, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) utilizes the P7 method for respirable quartz analysis. The objectives of this work are to 1) evaluate the performance of the P7 method on field samples of low quartz mass loadings, 2) evaluate the magnitude of dust mass spatial variability within an enclosed cab environment, and 3) estimate the subsequent propagation of error in calculating the per. centage of quartz over a broad range of mass and quartz filter loadings at a surface coal mine. These objectives were achieved by obtaining surface coal mine dust samples over a 9-month time period in enclosed cabs of three drills and three bulldozers. By measuring weighing precision and using reasonable estimates for sampler variability, the dust mass spatial variability component was calculated by difference. The results show that 1) the P7 method can be precise and linear with quartz mass loadings as low as approximately 5 µmg of quartz, 2) the dust mass spatial variability, even within an enclosed cab environment, is the dominant factor of variability in propagation of error in estimating the quartz content of the obtained dust samples on a percentage basis, and 3) weighing precision is not a significant factor in error propagation. In addition to the enclosed cab samples, samples from eight surface coal mine drills were collected at various locations exterior to the drill cab. Significant data scatter at these outside locations strongly suggests that the ambient dust mass spatial variability has a significant effect on the propagation of error in estimating quartz content of the dust samples on a percentage basis.

"During the mining process, the insitu material is broken into different size ranges, from very, large pieces to very fine particles. Some of the fine particles become airborne. In underground coal mining, airborne respirable. dust is associated with health and safety of the miners: The amount and size distributions of airborne dust are important parameters to effective dust control measures. The design of underground mine experiments, including sampling procedures and sample analyses methods to determine these parameters are presented in this paper.. A total of fifteen continuous miner cuts were sampled. The amount of dust generated during the cutting process and the relationship between total and respirable airborne dust concentrations and amounts are examined.The amount of respirable dust airborne is on the average only. 0.016% of the respirable dust generated. On the average, 61% of the total .airborne dust measured is in the respirable size range. The amount of respirable airborne' is on the average 36% of the respirable size fraction in the total airborne dust. For equal proportion of rock and coal material cut, rock contributes about twice as much fines (<0.22 mm) as coal. Additional fundamental research is necessary to further the understanding of 'the airborne propensity of respirable dusts in mine atmospheres.INTRODUCTIONMining is a sequential process of breaking, gathering, loading, and transporting the in-situ .materials.' In underground coal mines, duet in both the non-respirable and respirable size ranges is generated and entrained in every phase of the process. Even though large amounts of dust particles' adhere to run-of-mine coals, part of the dust generated becomes airborne (Cheng and Zukovich, 1973). Studies have shown that bit type affects the amount of dust generated'(Evans and Pomeroy, 1966; Kurth et al., 1975; Roepke et al., 1976; Stecklein et al., 1982; and Khair and 'Reddy, 1986). Deep cutting can reduce airborne dust generation (Black and Schmidt, 1977 arid, Black et 1978). Mechanical properties of. coal seams are also important factors in dust generation. Laboratory studies have shown that Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) of the coal has a relationship with the amount of respirable. dust generated (Beafi and Ramani, 1979; Moore and Bise, 1984; and Moore, 1986). However, these relationships have not yet been validated with' data from the mines. The amount of dust airborne depends on a number of factors. Suppression of the airborne propensity of dust by water sprays is'widely practiced and is very effective. Water flow rate; pressure and configuration of water sprays have been identified as major factors affecting dust capture by sprays (Courtney and Cheng, 1977; Courtney et al., 1978; and Kissell et al., 1979). Ventilation is a very important means of controlling the dust level at the coal face (Jayaraman, 1977). According to a National Academy of Sciences study (1980), the mechanism of dust generation and the process by which the generated dust becomes airborne are complex and not yet completely understood coal seams are also important factors in dust generation. "I. INTRODUCTION(SILICA, THE LUNG, INFLAMMATION, AND FIBROSIS)Inhalation of respirable-size silica (0. I to 5 µm in diameter) deposits the particles in the deep spaces of the Jung where oxygen is exchanged. The resulting pattern of inflammation is substantially different compared to that observed from other inhaled substances such as carbon, polystyrene titanium dioxide etc. 1 Following the inflammatory reaction the body attempts to isolate the damage by walling off the area via fibrosis. 2 The unique nature of the inflammatory response to silica makes it logical to infer that fibrosis is a later-stage manifestation of the initial inflammatory damage. In addition to the inflammation extensive lysis and cellular death particularly to macrophages and neutrophils, can occur, depending on the dose of silica.' The ingestion of significant amounts of silica by macrophages and neutrophils produces an inflammatory sequence which activates the lipoxygenase pathway of arachidonic acid metabolism and produces platelet activating factor (PAF) and leukotrienes (LT).4·5II. CALCIUM IONOPHORE MIMICS SILICA TOXICITY IN VITROPhagocytic cells exposed to silica in vitro produce PAF and LT. This response is reminiscent of phagocytic cells exposed to the calcium ionophore (A23 l 87) in the presence of ionic calcium.6-8 A23 l 87 forms a complex with free ionic calcium which passes through cellular membranes, thus transporting calcium inside the cell. The increased intracellular calcium concentration triggers the production of small amounts of prostaglandins large amounts of LT. PAF and. depending on dose cellular death (see Figure 1 ). Could silica cause LT production and cellular death by a similar mechanism? How could silica - an inert solid - act in a similar fashion as a soluble stimulant? Clearly the negative SiO2 and OH- surface of silica can bind calcium ions9 and therefore could theoretically act as a solid-state ionophore releasing bound calcium inside of cells following phagocytosis."

During 1946 several high-grade limestone deposits in western Washington were examined by the Bureau of Mines. This report presents the data obtained from investigation of the Sauk Mountain deposits in east-central Skagit County, Washington, The investigation consisted of transit and topographic surveys and sampling. The areas selected for sampling were first cleaned by blasting; channel samples up to 40 pounds Were cut where practical. Chip samples averaging 30 pounds were taken where channel samples could not be cut. A total of 21 samples in the Sauk Mountain area were taken and analyzed. The locations of the samples are shown in figures 2 and 4, and the analyses are listed in tables 1 and 2. This investigation is a part of a long-range program of general investigation of mineral resources for future industrial development of the Pacific Northwest. The Sauk Mountain deposits were investigated for the purpose of disclosing new sources of high-purity limestone, which could be mined and shipped at low cost to Seattle and other industrial cities in the Pacific Northwest.

Mining did not contribute significantly to the economy of Benin, a small country on the coast of West Africa, during 1978-79. During these years, Benin continued to be rated by the United Nations as one of the 25 least developed countries in the world; its gross domestic product was under $200 3 per person per year. Salt from seawater, sand and gravel, bricks, and imported clinker for cement were the only minerals which contributed to the economy. Minerals were not expected to play an important role in the commercial sector of Benin&apos;s economy during the next decade. Joint projects included infrastructure development to create a coordinated road and rail system between Niger and Benin that was begun in 1960 as ?Operation Hirondelle." In 1976, an agreement for the construction of a rail link from Niamey, Niger, to Parakou was signed. At Parakou, the rail line would join the existing line to the port at Cotonou. Construction of the rail line was expected to take 6 years, and the cost was estimated at $287 million in 1979. During late 1979, the Federal Republic of Germany granted Benin a loan of $12 million for reconstruction of the port at Porto Novo. Benin and Nigeria were discussing a joint adventure in crude salt exploitation.

The first thought in the case of an accident or contagious disease is naturally that aroused by our humane instinct , how serious is the case and will the person recover ? The economic effects of such cases , owing to their many ramifications , are seldom realized either by those directing mining operations or those engaged in the labor of producing . This paper is based on the accident experience of the State of Utah and the number of cases of two well known preventable diseases , typhoid fever and smallpox , in that State for the fiscal years 1917-1918 , 1918-1919 , 1919-1920 , and 1920-1921 . The data and figures presented are from coal -mining camps only . W. W. Adams , mine- accident statistician of the bureau, contributed valuable corrections and suggestions . The economic results of accidents are considered first , and those of the two preventable diseases later .

Oxidizing catalytic converters are sometimes used by underground mine operators as an emission control device to reduce odor, hydrocarbon (HC), and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions from diesel equipment. The objectives of this report are to quantitatively assess the effects of catalytic converters on diesel exhaust emissions and to make recommendations for their use. Information in this report is from a literature survey and contract research supported by the Bureau of Mines. Catalytic converters are effective in reducing CO, HC, and odors when the exhaust temperature is high enough so that the converter remains above 250° C. Converter temperature is dependent upon engine duty cycle. Catalytic converters increse sulfate emissions and slightly in- crease oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions. If low sulfur fuels are not used, the increase in sulfate and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions can offset any advantages of the catalytic converter as measured by the emissions quality index (EQI). In addition, in vitro bioassays have shown that catalytic converters produce soluble organic compounds, which have increased mutagenic activity with respect to untreated exhaust. Based upon criteria recommended by a joint Canadian-United States research panel, catalytic converters should only be used in special circumstances in underground mines. Vehicles equipped with catalytic converters should operate under moderate to heavy load conditions, and use fuel with a sulfur content less than 0.1 pct.
