Provide a coalbed methane data source for industry use in mine planning. Approach Coalbed methane data have keen collected and formatted into a computer implemented data base with software developed for storage, retrieval, and generating files of selected data in response to information requests and for statistical analysis of relationships among various coal parameters. How It Works Coalbed methane data is obtained by the Bureau's direct method test on exploration coal cores. The test involves sealing fresh coal cores in desorption canisters and periodically bleeding the gas into a water-filled, graduated cylinder to measure the volume of gas released. Coalbed methane data collected over the past 9 years have been entered into a computer-implemented data base for efficient retrieval and statistical analysis. Data base processing is accomplished with a commercially available storage, sorting, retrieval, and report writing software package (Datatrieve 11). Information requests from the coal industry are processed with the system, and the data in the desired output format am printed and forwarded to the requestor. Approach A heat activated stench/tracer gas system was developed which automatically releases the gas mixture into the mine ventilation air. How It Works A canister approximately 12 inches long and 3 inches in diameter is charged with 50 grams of ethyl mercaptan or other appropriate stench gas and 500 grams of instrument detectable Freon. The canister is then pressurized to 100 psi with nitrogen. A disc is used to seal the contents of the canister. A low-temperature alloy designed to melt at a predetermined temperature is used to restrain a spring loaded plunger. Upon exposure to heat, the alloy melts and the plunger is released. The Bureau of Mines has undertaken beneficiation investigations on samples representing large tonnages of oxidized taconites in order to develop and evaluate applicable technologies for producing iron oxide concentrates from these materials. Information derived from the investigations can be used to expand the domestic iron raw-materials base and to establish the impact these taconite deposits may have on future national iron ore requirements. This report describes a process that includes reduction roasting, magnetic separation, and flotation, applied to a western Mesabi Range sample taken near Coleraine, Minn. The sample contained 36.8 pct iron and 46.0 pct silica, and represented 0.5 to 1 billion tons of crude material. An average of 962 lb/hr of oxidized taconite was roasted with 33 lb/hr of lignite in a 35-foot-long rotary kiln. Pulverized lignite and natural gas maintained the kiln operating temperature at 850° C. The roasted taconite was beneficiated by magnetic separation and cationic flotation in a 900-lb/hr pilot plant and yielded a product analyzing 68.1 pct iron and 4.6 pct silica, and containing 82.4 pct of the iron in the kiln feed.

Provide a portable crushing capability to keep conveyor haulage close to the working face and permit more efficient and safer ore handling in low headroom, hardrock mines. Approach A readily portable jaw crusher is used which meets machine size, feed rock size, product size, and throughput requirements for low headroom, hardrock mines. How It Works The crusher is mounted on wheels to expedite frequent moves and to allow crushing of mined rock or ore near the working face. The crushed product is then placed on conveyor belts that are ex-tended as the crusher is moved. Keeping crushing and conveyor haulage near the face minimizes the haulage distances for trucks and loaders. Loading and haulage of run-of-mine ore is frequently the highest operational cost in underground mines. These costs can be significantly reduced by use of a belt conveyor, which is a common practice in coal and other soft mineral mines. The new low-profile hard rock crusher gives the same advantage of extensive belt haulage capabilities to low headroom, hardrock mines. The low-profile crusher will accept feed up to 30 inches when operating under 11 feet of headroom. The headroom required for crusher operation was reduced by tilting the jaws, feeding the crusher horizontally, and placing the eccentric shaft at the back or in a horizontal plane with the jaws. To reduce accidents associated with transporting, installing or maintaining mine conveyor belts by providing easy-to-use tools for use in specific tasks. Approach The Bureau of Mines, through a re-search contract, developed three devices for use on conveyor belt systems 1) for use in moving and positioning conveyor components. 2) to reduce spillage and clean-up around conveyors, and 3) to lessen the maintenance of the belt system. The Saucer Skid Moving conveyor components using runner nose 1-beam skids is a simple task when the direction of travel parallels the beams. However, when the unit is moved sideways or around corners for final positioning, the web of the beam scrapes the floor with a bulldozing effect. Many strain and sprain injuries hap-pen when mine workers drag the skids into position at this paint. To minimize such injuries, the Bureau of Mines developed a saucer skid five feet in diameter with rounded sides and a flat bottom. Its design incorporates eight reinforced ribs with holes so the component may be secured to the skid, and eight exterior eyelets to which towing chains may be attached. The skid can be easily moved in any direction because its rounded sides slide over the mine floor rather than drag across it.

The Bahamas Oil Refining Co. (BORCO) refinery in Freeport continued to operate at less than half its full 500,000-barrel-per-day capacity. Although owned through subsidiaries by the Carey Energy Corp (65%) and Standard Oil Co. of California (35%), BORCO is ineligible for participation in the Crude Oil Entitlements Program granted to companies operating within the United States proper or its territories. Like some other Caribbean refineries, BORCO has suffered a loss of normal market outlet due to the wt advantage afforded U.S. refineries by the Entitlements Program. Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, and Libya are the major suppliers of crude for the refinery. Its principal products, motor spirits, aviation fuel, distillate fuels, and residual fuel oils, were marketed in the United States and Puerto Rim. The Government-owned Bahamas Development Corp. and Burmah Oil Co. Ltd., held discussions pertaining to a renegotiation of Burmah Oil's management contract for the Grand Bahama Oil Transshipment terminal. The desired contract modifications were not made public but financial problems have plagued the terminal and its operation since construction started in 1972.

The Bureau of Mines has developed several techniques for draining methane from coalbeds in advance of mining. Drilling long horizontal holes from an underground location is one such technique, which was successfully demonstrated in the Pittsburgh and Sunnyside Coalbeds. The same technique has now been applied in the Mary Lee Coalbed at Jim Walter Resources, Inc. 's No. 4 Mine, Brookwood, Ala. , where two holes were drilled horizontally--one to a depth of 1,010 feet (308 m) and the other to 540 feet (165 m). The 1,010-foot (3083) hole proved successful in degasifying a portion of the Mary Lee Coalbed. The hole drained methane for 1 year, during which time the initial gas flow of 200,000 ft3/d (5,663 m3/d) declined to 65,000 ft3/d (1,840 m3/d). Total gas production was 40 x lo6 ft3 (1.1 x lo6 m3 ). The gas was of commercial quality, with 98 pct methane and a heat rating of 990 Btu/ft (36.89 Mj/m3). The methane emissions from the faces of the mine section advancing into the degasified zone were reduced by 60 pct. The 540-foot (165-m) hole was terminated prematurely when it became impossible to maintain an open hole. Because of caving, very little gas was drained through this hole.

INTRODUCTION Present-day Mexican mining legislation involves, not only the latest minim enactment (August 1, 1026), but many other enactments and regulations, principal among which are the Constitution, the Civil Code, the Code of Commerce, the Foreign Law, the Mining Tax Law, and. the Civil Jurisprudence of Mexico--the last-mentioned being based in Dart on Supreme Court decisions. Ere Mexican Federal Government is supreme in mining legislation because, among other reasons, a large part of the revenue of the Government must come from the fiscal control of the mines. All circulars, decrees, and rulings that affect the mines not only have their origin in the Central Government but are administered thereby. Operating heavy construction equipment is often associated with elevated rates of low back discomfort (LBD). However, there have been few formal studies that dealt with evaluating controls that can reduce the LBD among these workers. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using a continuous passive lumbar motion system (CPLMS) in reducing low back discomfort among operators of heavy earthmoving equipment. The CPLMS is an additional seat support that has a lumbar support bladder and a pump to provide cyclic inflation and deflation. Two groups of operators were identified as potential subjects for this intervention study, the intervention group with a mean age of 41.2 years and experience of 9.7 years used the CPLMS, and the control group with a mean age of 37.5 years and experience of 7.6 years did not use the CPLMS. Body part discomfort surveys were collected from both groups. In addition, the intervention group completed a CPLMS preference survey. The body part discomfort survey was collected up to eight days at three different times of the day. Results from the body part discomfort survey showed a decreasing trend the longer the CPLMS was used, for both the upper and low back region. A decreasing trend for the low back was also found comparing morning to evening discomfort scores across the days when using the CPLMS. When compared to their regular seat, 54% of the operators felt very comfortable in using the CPLMS, 36% of them wanted one for their equipment, and 54% showed interest in experimenting with the CPLMS for a longer time period. Results from this study indicate that the use of a CPLMS can effectively reduce the low back discomfort experienced by operators of heavy construction equipment.

Processing of nonmagnetic taconites by selective flocculation-des liming and anionic flotation of calcium-activated silica has been investigated using innovative procedures as a means of improving operating costs. Areas chosen for cost-cutting evaluation were grinding, fine screening, and water conservation and reclamation. The investigation was performed on Marquette range nonmagnetic taconites in the Bureau of Mines Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center flotation pilot plant, at feed rates ranging between 900 and 1,100 lb/hr. With fully integrated water reclamation, flotation concentrates containing 65.8 percent Fe and 3.4 percent Si02 were made in the best operating period, with accompanying weight and iron recoveries of 40 and 74 percent, respectively. During this same period, the estimated cost of both flotation and water reclamation reagents was only $0.80 per ton of concentrate (1968 pricing basis). This cost is about 15 percent lower than obtained previously at this Center for flotation reagents only. The investigation demonstrated additional potential savings in operating costs of approximately $0.96 per ton of concentrate through autogenous grinding as a substitute for ballmilling. Fine screening of intermediate concentrates was employed advantageously, but the frequency of blinding may be a factor militating against use of the screen in this flotation system.

Several gold-antimony geochemical anomalies were outlined near Stibnite, Idaho, using the humus sampling technique. Several hundred reconnaissance humus samples were collected and analyzed by a combination fire-assay atomic absorption method. The results partially outlined several gold-antimony anomalies and are very encouraging for further work in this part of Idaho.

In addition to nine powder and gaseous extinguishants of propagating Pittsburgh seam coal dust-air explosions earlier evaluated,6 10 other powders have similarly been evaluated under like conditions such that wall quenching of the coal dust-air flames was virtually absent and the dust concentration was temporally and spatially uniform to within about ±5 percent. None of the newly examined extinguishants was better than Purple-K (potassium bicarbonate); the 10 of this report are anhydrite (calcium sulfate), monobasic (4 types) and dibasic ammonium phosphate, natural and synthetic cryolite (sodium fluoalumi-nate), sodium sulfate, and tricalcium phosphate. Except for anhydrite, sodium sulfate, tricalcium phosphate, and the cryolites, these materials were about equally effective, when present in relatively low concentrations (weight-percent of the coal dust-extinguishant mixture). The maximum oxygen concentration for the extinguishment of otherwise uninhibited coal dust explosions and the influence of coal dust particle size and the volatile content of the coal were also explored. For the present, the choice of the inhibitor among the good ones evaluated is not as critical as the system to be used to deploy the extinguishant against a coal dust explosion.

The cost of reclamation can vary widely, depending on the primary objectives of the restoration activities. statistics in this study originated from State files, publications, and personal communications relating to restoration and pollution control measures for previously mined lands (orphan lands) and active mines. Reclamation of orphan lands is generally considered a public burden and constitutes an economic problem. All work reported here was completed under government contract, by the lowest bidder, with money coming from State and/or Federal funds. Cost would have been substantially lower had the reclamation been concurrent with mining. Several persons connected with some of the projects have observed that costs could probably be reduced by at least one half, if the reclamation had been conducted along with the mining. The expense of clearing and grubbing of volunteer vegetation, disposal of buried trees and brush, loosing of compacted spoil, and re-establishing access to areas could be saved. In addition, a contracting firm doing the work for a government agency would have mobilization costs and receive a profit. Mining companies also are profit conscious and would consider these costs in anticipating their profits (e.g., overhead would be less if reclamation is integrated with mining). The data presented here should serve as a guide for estimating and determining cost ranges, however, it should be recognized that variations exist. Adjustments may be necessary from the standpoint of physical conditions, economic conditions, price changes, and more restrictive requirements of recent surface mining laws. Reclamation conditions, procedures and successes in the eastern United States, particularly in Appalachia, have no bearing on conditions to be expected in the western United States. The situations are wholly different. Reclamation in the West differs from th t in the East, primarily because of aridity especially a during the summer months 1). Because of the many variables and differences between reclamation in eastern and western areas, they will be discussed separately.

Knowledge of the water content of oil-bearing formations is important in petroleum-reservoir evaluation work. Electric logging provides a means for making reliable estimates of water content if resistivity-saturation relationships representative of the formations are available. Relationships can be determined in the laboratory by a number of methods. This report describes and presents results of a laboratory investigation conducted at the Bureau of Mines Appalachian Experiment Station, Morgantown, W. Va. (1) to evaluate an evaporation method of attaining water saturations in sandstone samples when determining resistivity-saturation relationships and (2) to compare saturation exponents derived from data obtained, using different methods of achieving water saturations. A series of tests was conducted to determine the effect of evaporation on salinity distribution within the core specimen. Results of these tests show that a zone of high salinity was set up at the surface of a sample during evaporation and that long periods were required for the sample to reach resistance equilibrium after evaporation had ceased. Equilibrium time ranged from several minutes to several days, depending on the sample size and the technique used. The high-salinity zone was removed from the sample by using auxiliary porous material in capillary contact with the sample surface during evaporation. Salinity determinations and resistance measurements indicate that, at saturations greater than the minimum interstitial values, the mechanism of flow during evaporation was one of moisture migration mainly as a liquid from the interior of the test specimens to their exterior surfaces. The concentration of the contained brine remained essentially unchanged, except for a narrow zone near the evaporating surfaces.

In 1938 , the Bureau of Mines cooperated with Subcommittee XV on Plasticity and Swelling of Coal ( C. C. Russell , chairman ) , of Committee D-5 on Coal and Coke , A.S.T.M. , by testing various methods for determining expansion and plastic properties of a series of coals of widely different coking properties . One of the tests made by the Bureau was the British Standard Method for the Crucible Swelling Test for Coal.5/ Briefly , this swelling test consists in heating 1 gram of pulverized coal in a silica crucible over a gas flame under prescribed conditions to form a coke button which is compared in size and shape with a series of standard profiles numbered 1 to 9. These profiles are intended to cover the size and shape of buttons obtained from coals covering a wide range in plastic properties .. The number of the standard profile with which the maximum cross -sectional area of the button most nearly corresponds is recorded as the swelling index . Although the swelling test showed poor relationships with the various tests that were used for measuring expansion or contraction of coal during carbonization , it gave indications of having value in measuring free - swelling and caking properties of coals when burned on fuel beds . An opportunity to investigate this occurred when an engineer of an eastern public utility 'company reported pronounced differences in burning characteristics on grates of various shipments of Pocahontas coal . Some of these coals gave trouble by swelling 'excessively and clogging the grates . Samples were ob- · tained , and it was found that the troublesome coals gave decidedly higher free -swelling numbers than did the coals that performed satisfactorily . Also , it was found that the free - swelling index test gave better differentiation between coals than could be obtained from the coke buttons from the · ´`standard volatile -matter test or from agglutinating - value results . The results of the free - swelling tests were considered by the Subcommittee on Plasticity and Swelling , and a special group of the subcommittee , under the chairmanship of R. A. Sherman , was delegated to study the test method . Ostborg , Limbacher , and Sherman , ofthe Battelle Memorial Institute , ' investigated the various factors affecting the test and found that the swelling index was a good indication of the suitability of coal for performance on residential -type stokers from the standpoint of the coking characteristics of the coal . Data were presented also showing that the indexes wer helpful in the selection of coal for industrial underfeed stokers .

The law of June 5, 1911, suplements and amends the Laws of April 21, 1810 (the basic law) and May 2, 1837. The Royal Decree of September 15, 1919, coordinates the provisions of the Law of June 5, 1911, with those of the Laws of April 21, 1810, of May 2, 1837, and of July 8, 1865, that have remained in force, as well as with certain articles of the Law of September 1, 1913, which revisad the system of taxation. The revised code has been brought together in one volume.3 All citations in this abstract refer to the coordinating Royal Decree of September 15, 1919, unless it is otherwise specifically indicated.

Establish a procedure for reliably determining cation exchange parameters at an in situ mining site. The Problem Predicting the movement rates of pollutants from waste disposal sites requires reliable measurements of cation exchange parameters since cation exchange can retard pollutant movement. Reliable measurements of these parameters are also required for predicting the length of time needed to restore groundwater quality after in situ mining. Cation exchange is otten the controlling mechanism for the replacement of leach solution cations by the cations in the returning ground-water. Unfortunately, laboratory measurements using core samples are of minimal reliability. The uneven clay distribution at most sites produces a high variability in laboratory results. In addition the flow pattern in the laboratory tests is different from that in the field. Approach Bureau of Mines research has developed a field-test procedure that is quick and yields reliable and representative data. A corresponding data analysis procedure was also established in order to verify the' applicability of the computer simulation model of cation exchange used in the analysis, and of the general analysis procedure, with actual field data.

The data for Test I describes an underground bituminous coal mine operation in a 48 inch seam, with an estimated production rate of 1,056,000 tons per year. The system includes four continuous mining sections, conveyor belt haulage, and a rail network for supply and personnel transportation. This section illustrates the input data sequence and the various report formats which may be selected for the printing of results. As explained earlier, at the present time, the elements of the Cost Data Library must be read in with the regular data input. Thus, in the input data listing, immediately following the required user input, are cards which contain the inputs of the cost library. Examination of the cost reports indicate the absence of cost values for some categories for which the system would normally be expected to incur costs. This situation has arisen due to the format of the cost data provided in the U. S. Bureau of Mines reports. An example of this is the charge of $20/ton for brattice cloth while no charge is indicated for stoppings. The test report data provided a single figure for ventilation cost without a supplemental breakdown. Thus the cost indicated for brattice cloth is actually the total ventilation cost. These explanations hold true for the data input and output for Test II, Appendix III.

"In cooperation with the New York and New Jersey State Bridge and Tunnel Commissions, the Bureau of Mines has just completed the construction of an experimental tunnel in the Bureau's experimental mine at Bruceton, Pa., near Pittsburgh, Pa. The purpose of this tunnel is to make a final study of the ventilation problems arising in the adequate ventilation of vehicular tunnels for automobiles and trucks, especially the 9000-foot tubes that are being designed. to handle the traffic between New York City and New Jersey under the Hudson River.Chief engineer, Clifford M. Holland, of the Tunnel Commissions has shown that there are three principal problems involved in planning the ventilation of this tunnel, namely - (1) The amount and composition of exhaust gases from motor vehicles; (2) The dilution necessary to render these exhaust gases harmless; (3) Determination of coefficients of airflow and horse-power required in ducts, bends and openings.Composition of automobile exhaust gases.The answer to the first problem was obtained by making road tests on 101 automobiles and trucks at the Pittsburgh experiment station. These machines were taken from service without any previous adjustment so that the composition and amount of the exhaust gas may be taken as representative of actual operating conditions prevailing in the tunnel. A report covering the results of these tests was submitted to the chief engineer of the Tunnel Commissions, on November 1, 1920, and 411 be published in the report of the commissions. Low-temperature adiabatic heat-capacity determinations were made by the Bureau of Mines in the temperature range from 5 to 300 K for the two crystalline modifications of zinc sulfide, sphalerite (ß) and wurtzite (a). The entropy at 298.15 K of sphalerite was evaluated as l4.02±0.04 cal/deg mole and wurtzite, l4.06±0.04 cal/deg mole.
