Four actual coal mine waters were used in various phases of the research program. All were from the Sewickley Creek area In Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The BCR designations, site locations, and nature of the mine water samples are described briefly in the following paragraphs.

This paper discusses human judgment and decision making under stress. The authors review selected recent literature across various disciplines and suggest a definition of stress within the context of decision making during the management of emergencies. They also discuss fieldwork by the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, NIOSH, which explores traumatic incident stress, the relationship between previous training and performance under stressful conditions, and human behaviour in underground mine fires. The authors assert that stress is one of the factors that decision makers must contend with in most life-or-death situations. They suggest that a better understanding of individual judgment and decision making activities whilst under stress would yield a better understanding of how people reach the choices they make in emergencies. This enhanced understanding would be of enormous value to emergency managers, researchers and policymakers.

Many different types of mobile equipment used in surface coal mining utilize enclosed cabs to protect equipment operators. The overburden removal process is extremely dusty and can cause excessive exposure to respirable dust, especially crystalline silica. After equipment is used for years, many components of the enclosure deteriorate and its effectiveness is greatly reduced. This report discusses a cooperative research study performed on an Ingersoll Rand DM45E surface drill, retrofitted with a new Sigma pressurization and filtration system. Respirable dust concentrations were substantially reduced from 0.64 mg/m3 during pre-testing to 0.05 mg/m3 during post-testing with the new system, representing a 92% reduction in dust levels in the drill cab. This new system appears to be a very well-built and sturdy device, well-suited for the mining industry.

One mineral deposit in the Golden Trout Wilderness has potential. The currently producing Pine Tree Mine on the Little Kern River has an estimated 120,000 tons (109,000 t) each of indicated and inferred reserves averaging 0.77 percent tungsten trioxide. No apparent potential exists for base or precious metal or other mineral deposits. INTRODUCTION The Golden Trout Wilderness, established by Congress in 1978 under Public Law 95-237, encompasses 240,000 acres (97,000 ha) of conifer-forested, rolling, upland plateau at the headwaters of the Kern River in Inyo and Sequoia National Forests (fig. 1). Abundant streams locally contain Golden Trout, namesake of the area. Major roads serve the area to the west and east of the Wilderness; access is poor to the north and south.

C. 4 Hoist Assemblies (not man-rated) A large number of manufacturers supply materials handling winches. These units are predominately electric powered while a limited number of vendors supply air powered equipment. Air powered units are currently used extensively for underground materials handling purposes. Suppliers of materials handling equipment normally include a disclaimer statement in their published literature which clearly states that the equipment "is not designed or suitable for lifting or lowering persons " This category of commercially available equipment can be adequate for emergency man hoisting provided that its' capacity is suitably derated and provided also that the necessary safety features are incorporated. Section C. 5 details the equipment which could be added to a commercial materials hoist to meet these needs. Four commercially available hoist assemblies, two electric and two pneumatic are discussed in the following paragraphs. This equipment is typical of what is commercially available and three of the units are currently used extensively in mining applications. Each hoist description includes a remarks paragraph which identifies the additional equipment each hoist would require for emergency hoist use.

Helium production and shipment reached new peaks in 1.361. The Bureau of Mines produced 727 million cubic feet, 13 percent more than the 1960 record, and shipped 552 million cubic feet, 16 percent more than the 1960 record. Production exceeded demand for the third successive year, enabling the Bureau of Mines to add 174 million cubic feet to the volume stored underground for future use. At the end of 1961, the total volume of helium in underground storage in the Clifside gasfield was 44-7 million cubic feet. Contracts to implement a long-range helium conservation program were completed with four companies, obligating all the contracting authority of $47.5 million a year made available by the Congress. The four companies will finance, build, and operate helium extraction plants to recover from natural gas an annual average of 3.1 billion cubic feet of helium that would ordinarily be wasted when the helium-bearing natural gas is used for fuel.

4.1 Introduction Using methods outlined in previous sections of this report, programs were written and/or obtained to: i) select best combinations of "a" and "k" for up to 8 different value parameters, ii) calculate available and unavailable ore tonnages and other statistics, and iii) produce contour maps of various parameter characteristics and available tonnages on a line printer. Proposing A Model In this investigation, a model of the form: n Y = a0 + E a x. A-1 v=l J J was postulated, where the number of independent variables "n" was originally fifteen. The following experimental hypothesis was to be tested: Null Hypothesis: the coefficients a = 0 J Alternate Hypothesis: One or more of the coefficients a 0 J Correlation and Regression To establish the alternate hypothesis and to test how well the proposed model fits the data, the conventional statistical techniques of correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used. Additionally, factor analysis was employed to investigate the dependency relationships in the data. Correlation and linear regression are well established statistical procedures in science and engineering. References on these procedures include Spiegel (1961), Anderson (1963), and Draper and Smith (1966). A simple example is stated here. If N observations are made of two variables, x and y, and it is desired to test this data to see if a linear relationship exists, then a model of the form: Y = a0 + a 1 x A-2 is proposed. The values of a0 and al may be calculated from the raw data by the "least square normal equations", which are:

In connection with its continuing studies of the characteristics of alloys and alloying elements, the Bureau of Mines investigated the crystal structure of fused boron. This report describes how the structure of fused boron was found to be rhombohedral by the powder method for crystal-structure determinations by X-ray diffraction. The determinations of the crystal structure of boron reported in the literature were made on crystals prepared by various methods such as electrolysis, thermal decomposition of a boride, or by hydrogen reduction of boron tribromide. Table 1 summarizes the data found in the literature on the crystal structure of boron. The information shows the following: (1) Three structures have been reported for boron, (2) boron prepared by different processes--or even by varied conditions of a process--produces crystals of different structure, and (3) no information is given on the crystal structure of fused boron.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effect of controlled additions of selected metal oxides, as well as the adjustment of the calcia-to-silica ratio on the high-temperature strength of refractory-grade periclase. Increases in the hot flexural strength of some periclase materials in the range of threefold to fourfold were obtained with additions of Zr02 and by adjustment of the CaO:Si02 ratio to the 2.5 to 3.0 level. Results show that for each periclase refractory raw material, there exists a combination of level of Zr02 addition and an adjustment to the CaO:Si02 ratio that optimizes the hot flexural strength of each of these materials. Data also indicate that the improved hot strengths can be attributed to the high-temperature secondary phases formed between the different levels of periclase impurities and the additives, resulting in improved intergranular high-temperature bond strength.

The most time-consuming research segment was assembling the ref¬erences. These are provided immediately after the conclusions but are divided into two categories. The first is directly applicable publi¬cations, correspondence and personnel communications. The second listing contains those publications that are not directly tied to the research but where a probable application exists. In both listings, all important USBM publications are provided. The reference numbers used in the report apply only to the first reference portion. Further¬more, it should be noted that all entries are not used but are retained to help anyone who wishes to look further into different or allied areas of this research topic. Explosion-proof enclosures have been researched since approxi¬mately 1906. Even so, little is understood about the mechanism by which they are effective. Due to the voluminous literature published, there is a good probability that the assembled list is still incomplete. The literature search took the following directions. Work was first directed to reviewing the several references assembled by the Department of Mineral Engineering - Mining Section prior to the present project year. As a result, some duplications and inapplicabilities were found and eliminated. The primary sources of the previous search were the commonly available and usually superb library listings, such as Engineering Abstracts. Because these sources have enormous content on all subjects, they were cross-checked in the first semiannual period several times by different individuals to make sure all normally avail¬able literature were uncovered.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FURTHER WORK Based on the development effort and full-scale tests conducted during this program, a number of technical areas for future research and development have been identified. Further work in these areas would help to improve the reliability, speed of operation and efficiency of the remote sealing system. Recommendations for future work are summarized as follows 1. Development of an Inert Gas Generator For the sake of expediency in conducting the field test program, fresh air was used as the fluidizing medium for the fly ash. However, in an actual mine fire application the use of fresh air is likely to be prohibited. An inert gas, such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide or air containing less than 8 percent oxygen would be required. Using combustion as a means of reducing the oxygen content of air appears to be an attractive solution to the generation of the high flow rates of gas required (2500 to 5000 scfm). Such an inert gas generator would serve a dual purpose for the overall fire extinguishing operation. First, it would provide the inert gas for fluidizing the fly ash. Second, it could be used for inerting the fire area after the seals had been placed, thereby reducing the time required to extinguish the fire. It is recommended that the Bureau undertake a program to develop a field-operable, inert gas generator to satisfy these two requirements. 2. Development of a Field-Operable Sonar Initial Probing System A first stage prototype of a sonar initial probing system was developed during this present program. The results obtained with

"INTRODUCTION The Big Four fault and the Sandy Creek fault, with several cross faults, traverse the Stalion-Curnel fluorspar prospect in a northeasterly direction. The Big Four mine, about three-quarters of a mile northeast of the prospect, is the only active mine in the immediate area.A resistivity survey was made of a portion of the prospect by the Division of Geophysical Exploration, Bureau of Mines, in May and June 1946. As a result of this survey, five holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines during the period from October 8 to December 16, 1946. Two Longyear No. 12 Junior Straitline diamond drills were used for the work.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Bureau of Mines as part of its research effort to minimize the generation of hydrometallurgical waste, investigated a sodium sulfide leaching-electrolysis procedure for treating hydrometallurgical residues for elemental sulfur and base-metals recovery. Research was conducted on a leaching residue from a lead concentrate. The following procedure was developed. 1. The elemental sulfur was dissolved as polysulfide with an Na2S solution. 2. The resultant metal sulfide bearing residue was oxidatively acid leached in a cationic membrane electrolysis cell; the metals were solu¬bilized at the anode, and a base was generated at the cathode. 3. The elemental sulfur was recovered from the polysulfide solution by neutralizing with the acid in the anolyte. Byproducts of the neutralization were H2S and a sodium salt solution. 4. Sodium sulfide was regenerated by reacting the H2S byproduct with the base in the catholyte. 5. Lead as PbCL2 was recovered from the anode residue by brine leaching, and the other metals were recovered from the sodium salt solution as metal sulfides. 6. The barren filtrate from the metal sulfide precipitation constituted the recycled electrolyte. Ninety-eight percent of the elemental sulfur, 98 pct of the lead, and up to 80 pct of other accessory metals were recovered from a residue obtained from the FeCl3-NaCl leaching of a lead concentrate.

To concentrate coarse mica particles using a dry beneficiation technique. Approach Concentrate coarse, II berated mica particles using a Bureau-designed system of crushers, screens, and a two-stage zigzag air classifier. How It Works Because mica has a flat plate-like crystalline structure, mica particles are significantly lighter than blocky gangue particles of the same size fraction. Thus an air classification technique can separate the flat, light mica particles from the heavier gangue particles. The ore, which Is first run through a standard jaw crusher, a roll crusher, and a hammer mill to liberate the mica, enters the rougher Zig-zag section through a rotating air lock. See photograph and diagram of a 2-stage air classifier. Airflow through the classifier can be varied according to the size of the particles being separated. The gangue material falls through the airstream of the rougher zigzag section and is discarded as tailings. The mica flakes are carried by the air-stream to the cyclone shown on the right side of the diagram, where they are collected. This rougher mica concentrate is fed to the cleaner zigzag section through another rotating air lock. The mica particles are again carried by the airstream but they are now collected In the cyclone on the left side. The cleaner concentrate leaves the left-side cyclone through a third rotating air lock and is rescreened to remove under-size material missed by the first screening. The final product of this pneumatic process is generally a high-grade mica concentrate. A generalized flow diagram for the pneumatic concentration method Is shown In the second diagram.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, studied the use of manganese sea nodules for catalytic oxidation in air of 1 pct carbon monoxide, 1 pct propane, and 1 pct methane. Catalysts were prepared from both Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean nodules and compared with a platinum catalyst using a fixed-bed, steady-state microreactor with gas chromatographic analysis. Combustion temperatures with manganese nodules were 50° to 100° C lower than those with the platinum catalyst. Ion-exchange addition of rare-earth promotors to the nodule catalyst decreased combustion temperatures an additional 5° to 45° C.

The Ecuadorean mineral sector and overall economy have retained their traditional dependence upon the production and export of hydrocarbon products. Exports of crude oil and its products accounted for 62% of the country's export earnings in 1985. Ecuador's major mineral commodities produced and exported were cement, gold, limestone, liquefied natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, natural gas, natural gasoline, crude petroleum and condensate, raw steel, semimanufactured steel products, and sulfur.
