"The introduction into mines, quarries and manufacturing plants of machines and tools operated by compressed air has revolutionized methods of operation to an extent comparable only with that occasioned by the invention of explosives and the utilization of electricity. The use of compressed air in pneumatic tools, in rock drills, and for the operation of pumps and other machinery is well known to most miners and quarrymen, but its application as a substitute for explosives for breaking rock in a few granite quarries has received little publicity.In the region of Lithonia, a few miles from Atlanta, Georgia, is a dome of massive granite used widely for building stone and for paving blocks. The most remarkable structural feature of the granite is the absence of joints and sheeting planes. The term ""joints"" is applied to open fractures that commonly occur in rocks, usually vertical in direction or nearly so, and spaced from a few inches to several feet apart. On the Lithonia granite outcrop, however, one may walk over the bare rock surface for hundreds of feet without finding any indications of a joint, ""Sheeting planes"" are open fractures at various levels, approximately parallel with the rock surface. The presence of such planes when spaced several feet apart greatly facilitates quarrying, and where absent, as at Lithonia, the necessary fractures must be made artificially.The forcing of artificial sheeting planes is accomplished as follows: Two holes of about 3-inch diameter arc drilled close together and to a depth of about 8 feet. Two men work at these holes all summer, and sometimes part of a second summer. A very small charge of black blasting powder, not more than a spoonful, is placed in each hole, tamped with clay, and the charges are fired simultaneously with an electric battery. This starts a small fracture running outward from the bottoms of the holes. There is in most granites one direction of easy splitting known among quarrymen as the ""rift"", and as the rift direction in the Lithonia granite is horizontal the fracture follows a horizontal plane,"

The Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, passed by Congress in the wake of the disaster at Farmington, West Virginia, led to an extensive study by the National Academy of Engineering of the problems involved in coal mine safety. One of the results of this report and subsequent research conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines has been the investigation of electromagnetic techniques for the location of trapped miners after a mine emergency. The Westinghouse Georesearch Laboratory has been involved in both the 2 theoretical and field studies relating to this problem. A compact personal beacon transmitter has been developed which can be attached to and powered by a miner's lamp battery. A compatible lightweight loop antenna package has also been developed which can be easily carried on a miner's belt. This antenna can be quickly deployed on the mine tunnel floor. For the purpose of calculating its electromagnetic fields on the earth's surface, the loop can be considered to be a magnetic dipole buried in the earth. (The earth is assumed to be homogeneous and to have a conductivity of s mhos/m.) The surface of the earth is assumed to be uniformily sloping and the transmitter dipole oriented as in Figure 1. The fields on the earth's surface can be computed by using a superposition of the fields of a 4 vertical magnetic dipole3 and of a horizontal magnetic dipole in proportions which depend on the slope of the terrain. In the case of level terrain a null in the horizontal magnetic 5 field occurs on the surface directly above the dipole. This null is designated as the apparent source location and is the criterion by which the source is located. The criterion was tested at two hardrock mines and two coal mines in the fall of 1972. The apparent source locations were compared to actual locations determined by conventional surveying techniques. It was found that due to nonlevel terrain the apparent and actual source locations differed by up to 13 meters. This discrepancy can be resolved by an examination of the fields of a source beneath uniformly sloping terrain. Figure 2 shows the experimental and theoretical results for a

The empirical nature of this investigation required measurements of variables under operating conditions in underground coal mines. The variables to be measured were based on the postulated character¬istics of the loading function, as described in the previous chapter. One class of variables presumed to influence the loading function are geological variables. Accordingly, the sites for data collection were selected in different bituminous coal seams at dispersed locations in order that variation in geological conditions would exist. Seven mines in central and western Pennsylvania and one mine in northern West Virginia were selected as data collection sites. Five different coal seams were represented by these mines. The remaining classes of variables - geometric, mechanical, and procedural - were measured as they occurred in the mines. A description of the measurements, and the conversion of these measurements to forms which could be-analyzed for effect on the loading function is given. Mining Dimensions At the underground working face, the following dimensions were measured: a. Thickness of coal excavated. b. Thickness of shale excavated. c. Total height excavated. d. "The investigation discussed in this paper was undertaken to obtain fundamental data on crushing and grinding and has been confined, so far, to work on quartz.The results of crushing or grinding have hitherto been judged entirely by the amount of the various-sized particles produced, based. on sieve sizing for particles above 74 microns in size and on microscopic measurement or elutriation for particles below 74 microns - a method which could give only a general idea of what had been accomplished.There was a distinct need of a ""yardstick"" for the measurement of crushed material. It appeared that no advance in the fundamental investigation of crushing and grinding could be made without a reliable method of surface measurement and that such a measurement would have to be based on some property of the surface of the crushed material.A number of attempts based on various surface actions, such as adsorption and heat of wetting, were made to measure surface on quartz particles, but all gave unsatisfactory results. After some preliminary work it was decided that a dissolution method based on Wenzel's law-- ""the reaction velocity between solids and liquids is proportional to the area. of contact""4 -- would be the most feasible.Early use of the dissolution method had been made for surface measurements5, and lately Dr. Geoffrey Martin and his coworkers in England used the dissolution method to determine surface on quartz. They compared the amount of quartz dissolved from a sample in one hour by a hydrofluoric acid solution, with the amountdissolved from a measured quartz cuboid6,After investigating the solvent power of sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide, and hydrofluoric acid for quartz, hydrofluoric acid was selected as the most suitable solvent, and a dissolution method was developed which gives very reliable results.During the dissolution of quartz in hydrofluoric acid, the reaction velocity changes for two reasons: there is a change in concentration of solution, and a change of surface of the solid. The amount of quartz dissolved in a definite period of time is therefore not a true measure of surface. If, however, the reaction velocity or rate of dissolution for various periods of time be plotted, a curve will be obtained which, if extrapolated to the zero time ordinate, will give the rate of dissolution before any change of surface or any change in the solvent has taken place, and which is a true index of surface. This rate of dissolution, expressed in percentage of the original sample at the zero time ordinate, is designated herein as the ""Initial Rate"" or as simply ""I. R."""

"Under existing conditions in the treatment of oxidized lead ores containing small quantities of molybdenum no provision is made for the recovery of the molybdenum. Considerable quantities of this important element are lost in the slags of the lead smelters and constitute an economic waste. There is little or no probability that slag dumps containing molybdenum in small quantities could be economically treated for the recovery of the element, and steps for the prevention of waste in this respect must be taken prior to smelter treatment.Wulfenite, lead molybdate (PbMo04), and molybdite, molybdic ocher (Mo03), are the molybdenum minerals most abundantly found in deposits of oxidized lead ores. Wulfenite contains 39.3 per cent molybdenum trioxide and 60.7 per cent lead oxide; molybdite contains 66.7 per cent molybdenum and 33.3 per cent oxygen. Plumbojarosite, argentojarosite, cerussite, and occasionally anglesite are commonly associated with wulfenite ores, and the oxidized iron content is usually fairly high.The recent discovery and development of a body of wulfenite ore in the Star district near Milford led to a cursory microscopic examination of samples of the ore, followed by a few preliminary tests which had for their object the separation and recovery of the lead and molybdenum in separate products.The microscopic examination showed that the samples used in the work were composed of wulfenite, plumbojarosite, and a small quantity of cerussite, and indicated that the iron content was quite high. The ore was porous and yellowish-brown; crystals of wulfenite appeared to be quite uniformly distributed through it, and this mineral and plumbojarosite (Pb0.3Fe203.4S03.6H20) apparently accounted for the major part of the lead content, although lead"

The Sutherland copper prospect is situated in Floyd County, Va. The immediate area was prospected around 1850, and one of the adits possibly dates from that time. Little or no ore has been mined from the deposit. The deposit is a mineralized sulfide zone occurring in mica schist and consisting mostly of pyrrhotite with minor amount of copper. A magnetometer survey of the deposit by the American Metal Co. in 1939 showed an anomaly that was thought to indicate a zone: of secondary enrichment. The Bureau of Mines diamond-drilled 14 holes, totaling 913 feet, and opened an adit during February and March 1943. No appreciable copper values or indications of secondary enrichment were found.

The Bureau of Mines investigated fumes generated by selected welding materials used in mines in order to help determine their relative hazard potential. The initial phases of the study have been completed. A welding-fume generation and collection apparatus was designed, assembled, and calibrated. Five brands of coated, AWS-type E308-16 stainless steel electrodes were tested. Total fume generation rates of 0.39 to 0.51 g/min were measured. Quantitative chemical analyses were conducted for all of the principal firms constituents. Two analytical schemes were used to determine levels of the Cr6+ and Cr3+ species contained in the welding fumes; comparable results were obtained. The Cr6+ was found to be the most hazardous constituent, leading to a maximum allowable total fume exposure of 1 mg/m3. Fume generation rates and fume constituent analyses will be derived for other groups of welding electrodes using similar procedures.

"Flotation is generally regarded as a process that is only applicable to metallic minerals. However, its scope is now known to be greater than this, because some of the nonmetallic minerals are floatable, such as graphite, sulphur, and fluorite. Recent observations show that limestone may be added to the list of floatable nonmetallic minerals. Such work is being done on a laboratory scale at the Southern Experiment Station (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) of the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, where experimental magnetic concentration of the low-grade iron ores of the Birmingham district is in progress. Certain experiments have demonstrated that the limestone may be floated from the magnetic log-washer tailing, and then incorporated in the iron concentrate.If the loss of lime could be prevented, some ores though low in iron and high in insoluble contain enough lime to make their concentrates self-fluxing. Since this loss in the magnetic log-washer can not be avoided, the Time must be recovered from the tailing by some method and added to the magnetic iron concentrate before sintering. Then the resulting concentrate will be self-fluxing.While seeking a suitable means of treating the tailing for recovery of lime, flotation was tried. It was at once evident that this method had possibilities, during the early part of the investigation, soap solution made from a common soap was used as a flotation reagent. The froth obtained was a fairly good lime concentrate. This result was an important clue, and led to tests with the use of such reagents as oleic acid and sodium oleate. Later, cresol, creosote, coal tar and other similar flotation reagents were tested in combination with the oleic acid and soap solutions. As a result, oleic acid and cresol used together were found to be satisfactory.The tailing from the magnetic log-washer is in excellent physical condition fur flotation. The iron ore had been ground in a ball mill to 100 mesh for magnetic concentration. Hence the bond between the lime carbonate and the other constituents of the tailing was well broken."

Mining and reclamation procedures that meet the requirements of SMCRA are illustrated on pages 8 and 9 for each of the three major surface coal mining methods -- area mining, contour mining, and mountaintop removal mining. The three methods involve the same basic steps: clearing the land of trees and other vegetation, removing topsoil and overburden, mining the coal, and reclaiming the land. Although all three methods would not usually occur on any single site, the illustration facilitates comparison of mining and reclamation methods and aids basic understanding of the reclamation processes that take place under SMCRA. Area Mining The area mining method is commonly used to mine coal in the flat to moderately rolling terrain found principally in the western and midwestern states. After the overburden is excavated down to a coal seam, the mining area is enlarged horizontally to expose more coal for removal. In the West, where coal seams are commonly 10 to 20 feet thick (and range up to 100 feet thick in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming), the life of some mines maybe more than 50 years. In the Midwest, coal seams are typically 3 to 7 feet thick and 75 to 100 feet below the surface. Because of the large expanse of area mines and their relatively unrestricted sites, enormous equipment is used to remove overburden and reconstruct the land. The area mining operation in the illustration is on land that was formerly used for farming. The drawing shows that the agricultural use is being reestablished immediately following reclamation. Mining is proceeding across the land toward the left side of the site. The initial excavation was made far enough away from the stream along the right edge of the site to prevent damage to the water supply. The coal under most of the site has been removed, and reclamation has been completed on some of the land. For example, some of the cattle in the foreground and those in the feedlot behind the silo are grazing on reclaimed land that has been mined. At the far left of the illustration, topsoil from the unmined area is being removed by scrapers, transported across the area of active mining, and immediately spread on the land on the right, which is being reclaimed. SUMMARY The objective of this program was to develop a system to extinguish coal mine fires by remote sealing of the underground passageways. The system developed had to be versatile enough to function under a wide range of operating conditions, including large variations in passageway geometry, depth of mine, water conditions, both in the mine and at the surface, and rubble in the mine passage. The system developed had to include instrumentation for the remote probing of the passageway prior to sealing, a system for sealing the mine passages, and instrumentation for remote monitoring of the quality of the seal during and after construction. These objectives were successfully achieved during this program. The remote mine sealing capability of the system was satisfactc rely demonstrated in a field test conducted at the Eastern Associated Coal Corporation Federal No. 1 Mine in Grant Town, West Virginia. The remote sealing consists of: (1) A sonar initial probing system which can operate satisfactorily even in the presence of dense smoke. The system is capable of determining both the local passageway geometry, identifying the presence of cribs and other obstructions, and the position of the borehole in the mine passage. (2) A mine sealing material system which utilizes fly ash for making the complete seal or as a bulk filler in conjunction with a urethane, froth foam, seal topping system. The choice of using fly ash alone or fly ash with foam topping depends on a number of factors, such as quality of seal desired, time available per seal, depth of borehole, passageway geometry, and water holding require¬ment. Reduce the time, complexity and expense of dissolving metal and mineral samples in solution in preparation for chemical analysis. Approach In earlier research, the Bureau of Mines developed a rapid and inexpensive method for the dissolution of mineral and metal samples in plastic pressure bottles heated in a boiling water bath. Using this technique, samples could be prepared for chemical analysis in less than one hour compared with several hours by traditional dissolution methods (see Technology News No. 85, December 1980 for further details). By heating in a microwave oven, sample dissolution time can be reduced to approximately 5 minutes.

The coal deposits in Alaska occur in several major coal fields or basins. The deposits underlie about a quarter of the state, an area larger than Montana. Approximately 60 percent of the coal is bituminous and 40 percent is subbituminous. Less than one percent is lignite or anthracite. Although known coal reserves are estimated at only 6.1 billion tons (about 1.25 percent of U.S. reserves), estimates place the hypothetical reserves at 5.5 trillion tons and the identified reserves at 170 billion tons. The differences are due to limited exploration programs within the state. Conditions affecting mining and reclamation are unique to Alaska because of its extreme northern latitude. For example, permafrost occurs in about 75 percent of the state; tundra vegetation occupies vast treeless regions; and the climate is characterized by extremely cold winter weather and a short summer season. In addition, hydrologic conditions are considerably different from those in other states; major streams fed by silt-laden glacial melt water contain greater concentrations of natural sediment than the effluent discharge limits permitted by federal regulations. Also, some coal field locations are subject to potentially high seismic risk. These factors make coal mining and reclamation in Alaska more difficult than in other states. Alaska's program to regulate surface coal mining was approved May 2,1983. The Abandoned Mine Lands program was approved December 23,1983.

"Introduction.Southern Illinois and Kentucky are credited with approximately 90% of the fluorspar production of the United States. A small amount of high-grade acid, spar is obtained from the ore by band sorting; the greater part, however, is recovered by jigs and tables as gravel spar containing approximately 85% calcium fluoride. In the jigging and tabling operations, galena is recovered, and enough silica and calcite are removed to raise the calcium fluoride content of the gravel spar to 85%. However, the removal of silica and calcite results in a large loss of spar. With increasing depth in the mines, zinc sulphide, sphalerite, is encountered in increasing quantity and the removal of this has become a serious problem. While the sphalerite can be fairly well removed from the spar by present milling methods, a marketable zinc concentrate can not be made. The experiments described below were made on fluorspar ore from Southern Illinois, by the mining experiment station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, at Rolla, Mo., in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy.The ore tested contained. 7.3% lead, 27.9% zinc, 35.7% calcium fluoride, 9.5% silica and 4.7%. calcite.Tests and Results. In some preliminary tests it was noticed that a portion of the finely crushed ore adhered strongly to the sample pans, and upon investigation it was found that the adhering material was practically clean spar. By utilizing this property of adhesion 46.8% of the spar was recovered as a product containing 98.3% calcium fluoride. This suggested the possibility of using electrostatic separation."

In studies of mine and tunnel ventilation conducted by engineers of the Bureau of Mines , various smokes are used to determine flow of air , direction of the currents , and the rate of mixing . The instrument for generating streams of sulphur trioxide (SO ) smoke , shown in the drawing herewith, has been found helpful , convenient and practicable for such purposes ; it is also especially useful in some places where fire for generating smokes is not permissible . The apparatus consists simply of a glass tube containing fuming sulphuric acid on granular pumice stone , attached to a rubber syringe bulb . When a squeeze of the bulb blows air through the tube , a stream of dense white smoke evolves, which follows and makes visible the air currents . The tubes after preparation are hermetically sealed to prevent deterioration . When ready for use , they are easily broken open at a file scratch for the purpose on both tips , and inserted into a rubber nipple at the bulb . Sometimes it is of advantage to attach them to a longer rubber tube leading to the bulb . Tubes of the size shown (about 1/2 inch outside diameter by 5 inches long) are usually sufficient for the needs of a day . Thereafter they cease to fume because the acid absorbs moisture from the air and looses its effectiveness . Smaller sizes of tubes and larger have been made , but the size shown has proved most practicable . Immediately after a person has finished using a tube it should be buried or disposed of in a place where it will not be touched by shoes or clothing, or come in contact with wooden floors , furniture , or metals , because the acid , which will eventually leak from the tubes , is highly corrosive . -- Reports of Investigations , Department of the Interior , Bureau of Mines .

"INTRODCICTIONSilicosis is the chronic fibrosing disease of the lungs caused by the inhalation of crystalline silica. However, inhalation of crystalline silica, may induce three distinctly different disease patterns; i.e., chrome silicosis, accelerated silicosis, and acute silicosis. These three disease patterns differ in their pathologic characteristics, clinical symptoms, onset of disease, and mortality. Many studies in the past have focused on the elucidation of mechanisms involved in the development of chrome silicosis. We recently reported that freshly fractured silica has surface properties that could make it more reactive with lung tissue than aged silica, and that this unique reactivity of freshly fractured silica may be involved in the pathogenesis of acute silicosis (Dalal et al., 1986; Vallyathan et al., 1988; Shi et II., 1988). Because freshly fractured silica could contain some moieties in an ""excited state,"" due to the breakage of silicon oxygen bonds, we postulated that the de-excitation of these moieties could produce light which could be monitored by a luminescence measurement technique. In addition, if this ""excited state'' of silica could trigger a greater biologic response by phagocytic cells, this activation could be monitored by a chemiluminescence technique in the presence of appropriate enhancers.This investigation describes for the first time the use of luminescence in the study of freshly fractured silica and its properties. Enhanced biologic reactivity of the freshly fractured silica with alveolar macrophages was monitored by the chemiluminescence technique.MATERIALS AND METHODSNative silica was obtained from the dust bank of the GenericRespirable Dust Technology Center, Pennsylvania State University, State College, PA, and ground for 3~ min in an agate ball mill. It was then sieved through a 20 micron mesh filter and used within 1 O min as fresh silica or stored in glass bottles for aging. X-ray energy spectrometry and X-ray powder diffraction studies on representative samples were made to confirm the mineralogic purity. All the silica samples were found to be 99 % pure with minimal detectable conlamination by metal ions."

This paper presents an approach for representing and analyzing random motions and hazardous events in a simulated three-dimensional workplace, providing designers and analysts with a new technique for evaluating operator-machine interaction hazards in virtual environments. Technical data in this paper is based upon a project striving to reduce workers' risks from being hit by underground mining machinery in a confined space. The project's methodology includes human factors design considerations, ergonomic modeling and simulation tools, laboratory validation, and collaboration with a mining equipment manufacturer. Hazardous conditions can be analyzed in virtual environments using collision detection. By simulating an operator's random behavior and machine's appendage velocity, researchers can accurately identify hazards, and use that information to form safe design parameters for mining equipment. Analysts must be discerning with the model and not read more from the databases than what the simulation model was designed to deliver. Simulations provided an interesting approach to data gathering in that there was no need for live subjects and logistics - test sites and costs associated with experiments-became insignificant. Collisions versus speed, operators' size, and risk behaviors proved the versatility found in the data obtained from the model. Preliminary results show that response time significantly affects the number of collisions experienced by the virtual subject. Also simulation data suggests that more mishaps occur with hand-on-boom-arm risk behavior.

Previous studies conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have shown that approximately 90 percent of coal miners and 49 percent of metal/nonmetal miners had a hearing impairment by age 50 (Franks, 1997). Mine workers are exposed to additional noise levels underground due to the reflection of machine-generated noise that would otherwise dissipate in an aboveground setting. Determining the sound-absorption coefficients is essential in modeling the sound field in an underground mining environment. Sound absorption is a measure of the amount of acoustic energy that strikes a surface and is absorbed rather than being reflected. The acoustic environment that mining machines operate in is a critical factor affecting the sound pressure level exposure for mining machine operators. Impedance tube testing is an inappropriate method for determining underground absorption coefficients due to the brittle composition of materials such as coal and slate. Classic absorption coefficient estimation using T60 measurements will not work well in an underground environment because the theory assumes a finite room, a diffuse field and a relatively uniform absorption. None of these assumptions are true in an open-ended mine entry. This paper presents a method using a ray-tracing technique to determine absorption coefficients for underground mines. Absorption coefficients are determined and presented for octave bands from 63 Hz to 8 kHz. The absorption coefficients are essential for determining and predicting potential overexposure to machine operators in different mine environments.1

The Bell mine operated by the Warner Co. at Bellefonte, Pa., has an annual production of about 600,000 short tons of high-grade limestone. Since 1924, shrinkage stoping has been the mining method. Horizontal, long-hole diamond-drilling for production in stopes was started with one machine in July 1946. It is now standard practice. The burden on the holes is 10 feet. Diamond bits are noncoring EX-size in both concave and pilot types. The two types have little difference in drilling speed at the Bell mine. The diamond drills are mounted on 3-inch single-screw columns. Diamond drilling shows a marked increase in efficiency at the Bell mine, compared to percussion drilling, with respect to tons broken per drill shift, tons broken per foot of hole, and tons broken per pound of explosive. The advantages of diamond-drilling blast-holes also include (a) improved safety, greater footage per drill shift, (c) better frag- mentation of the broken, stone, and (d) reduction in amount of barring down required in stopes because the working places are limited to slots which have a relatively small area.
