Held on the 22nd March 1972 at Kelvin House. Four papers were presented at this colloquium, which was attended by approximately 120 people. The first paper, 'Flotation Research Work at the N.I.M. research group, University of Natal on the modelling of a Flotation Process' was presented by Dr R. P. King, the leader of the N.I.M. Research Group in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Natal. A discussion panel, under the chairmanship of Dr R. E. Robinson with Mr M. Dawson (PMC), Mr E. Roux (FOSKOR), and Dr B. K. Loveday (NIM), discussed the potential application of the theoretical work on flotation modelling to industrial processes, and alternative approaches to providing a way of control of flotation plants. The second paper, 'Fundamental Studies of the Flotation Process the Work of the National Institute) for Metallurgy', was presented by Dr N. P. Finkelstein. The discussion panel for this paper was under the chairmanship of Professor D. D. Howat,and had as its members Mr H. P. Carlisle (JCI), Professor D. le Roux (University of Pretoria), and Mr E. Rudolph (Anglo American Research Laboratories). A lively discussion on this paper ensued, with several contributions from the floor. After lunch, Mr S. K. de Kok, Assistant Consulting Metallurgist, Anglo Vaal, presented a paper on 'The Flotation of Copper and Zinc Sulphide from Prieska Ore'. The paper was discussed by a panel comprising Dr V. C. Lovell (NIM), Mr A. Gilbert (General Mining), and Dr D. Legge (Anglo Vaal), under the chairmanship of Dr L. Bushell. This discussion, in which many members of the audience participated, revolved around the difficulties associated with the production of copper and zinc concentrates and the lack of fundamental information on the behaviour of copper and zinc sulphides in flotation. The final presentati0n was a paper, 'The Recovery by Flotation of Cassiterite contained in Gravity Concentration Plant Tailings', presented by Mr E. B. Viljoen (Metallurgy Department, Goldfields South Africa Limited). The discussion, led by a panel consisting of Mr O. Tant (Goldfields Laboratories), Mr J. Levin (NIM), and Mr R. I. Shanks (NIM), under the chairmanship of Mr H. Cross (Goldfields South Africa Limited) referred particularly to the use of new reagents for the flotation of tin, with particular emphasis on the fundamental relationship between reagent composition and its ability to float this type of mineral.

Production of oxygen on the moon can be achieved by reduction of lunar soil. One such reduction technology, hydrogen reduction, favours a high proportion of ilmenite in the feedstock. Ilmenite is present in lunar soil as a minor mineral phase, but it can be upgraded using electrostatic separation. This study presents the results of a preliminary investigation into the operating parameters and sensitivities of a free-fall electrostatic mineral separator for lunar applications. Samples of ballotini and ilmenite as well as simple binary mixtures of the two were tribocharged on copper and passed through a uniform electrostatic field. The field is varied to change the electrostatic force acting on the particles. The proportion of material reporting to the positive electrode collectors, negative electrode collectors or the central collector was measured to determine the separation performance. The data confirmed that the charge transferred from the tribocharger to each species is in agreement with the triboelectric series; ballotini was found to charge positively on copper and ilmenite negatively. Particle-particle contacts were dominant, however, resulting in a somewhat symmetrical particle distribution in the collectors. These findings indicate that the copper tribocharger design requires optimisation in order to substantially increase particle-wall contacts. Four binary mixtures with feed grades of ilmenite ranging from 5% to 20% were prepared and tested. This study found that a higher ilmenite head grade resulted in a higher concentrate grade (26.3% from a head grade of 20%) with low recovery (3.4%). In contrast, the lower feed grade resulted in a low concentrate grade but higher recovery. The mass yield of ilmenite was 1.4 times greater for the highest-grade feed than for the lowest. A subsequent study into the reprocessing of middling fraction found a nearly constant relationship between cumulative grade and recovery. This is the first investigation into the effect of feed grade on the concentrate grade and recovery for lunar mineral processing. Keywords: Lunar resources, beneficiation, electrostatic, SRU, ISRU

In this study, the detachment behaviour of 314 μm diameter silica particles from a single 3 mm diameter bubble rotating in a confined cavity connected to a cross-flowing water channel was investigated. The liquid cross-flow generated a rotating flow inside the confined cavity, which was quantified using 2D particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. The fluctuating (x-y) velocity components inside the cavity for each cross-flow velocity, U, were then used to estimate the corresponding time/volume average turbulence intensity values, Ti. Turbulence intensity ranged from 9.3-16.2%. In the absence of a bubble, the rotating vortex within the cavity created a pressure field which decreased towards the centre of the vortex; wherein the lowest pressure zone was located at the centre of the cavity. The vorticity into the cavity was found to increase with increasing the turbulence intensity. A bubble, both without and with particles attached, was introduced into the cavity under different flow conditions and its motion was tracked using the shadowgraphy technique. Experimentally, it was found that the bubble-particle aggregate was trapped at the centre of the cavity (low-pressure region) following a spiral trajectory. An interface resolved 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to predict the particle detachment conditions within the confined cavity. CFDpredicted vorticity in the absence of a bubble agreed well with experimental observation. The CFD analysis indicated that the vorticity inside the cavity was not significantly changed when a single bubble was introduced. On this basis, the computed vorticity was utilised in describing the force balance applied to the attached particle. Computationally, it was found that the critical turbulence intensity, beyond which the particle was detached from the bubble, was 14%. This value was consistent with the experimental observation of detachment at Ti at 15.7%, and above, but not at lower values. Lloyd focused attention on the shortage of locally trained mining and metallurgical graduates, and indicated that the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) has been exerting pressure to boost the intake of undergraduates in mineral disciplines. This article reviews the recruiting activities of the South African minerals industry over the past decade, and discusses some of the programmes that are in operation at the moment, particularly those aimed at potential graduates.

Tailings management aims to dispose of tailings at the minimum cost consistent with meeting or exceeding imposed standards, including legislative obligations. This simple business objective requires managing the tailings storage facility (TSF) risks associated with surface water, groundwater, dust, sustainable closure, and potential catastrophic failure. The individual nature of every orebody and specific site topography ensures that no one size fits all. It has been suggested that paste and thickened tailings (P&TT) provides the ability to tailor the production and transportation of tailings to suit the deposition site, rather than the traditional approach of accepting that the deposition site has to accommodate tailings of high variability. While the traditional approach can be made to work, it is directly linked to the catastrophic failures of tailings impoundments, where large volumes of decant water have triggered failures due to overtopping, piping or slope instability, or saturated tailings have simply liquefied. P&TT offers an ability to mitigate these risks, and when implemented into new projects with variable tailings streams there are significant benefits to be realized. This paper identifies the interdependencies between the various tailings disposal processes, such as thickening, pumping, and deposition. It demonstrates that there are benefits in taking a more integrated approach to the design and operation of tailings disposal facilities. A collaborative industry project to tackle this challenge is described.

The Prieska deposit, mined between 1971 and 1991, is one of the world’s top thirty volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) base metal deposits. The Prieska Copper Mine in the Northern Cape Province was closed by Anglovaal when underground mining had extended to depths which did not allow for safe and economic extraction of the deposit at the time. The mine has a recorded historical production of over 1 Mt of zinc and 430 k tonnes of copper from 46.8 Mt of milled sulphide ore, achieving life-ofmine metal recoveries of 85% for copper and 84% for zinc into high quality concentrates (refer ORN ASX release 15 Nov 2019). Orion Minerals Ltd is currently investigating the feasibility of developing a new mine in the footprint of the historical Prieska Copper Mine, using the extensive remaining infrastructure, with the intent of extracting the unmined zinc-copper mineralisation from the Prieska deposit. This paper reports results on the flowsheet development philosophy on the hypogene ore, and challenges encountered in the process. This study initially failed to replicate historic copper and zinc recoveries employing the historic production flowsheet and reagent conditions unmodified on bench scale, as the copper and zinc were co-floating. Flowsheet modifications were therefore made to improve differential flotation and recovery, resulting in achieving comparable saleable products and recoveries from processing the hypogene ore on bench scale. Flotation variability test work on the hypogene ore focused on the use of the original flotation procedure and reagent suite using a sodium cyanide-zinc sulphate depressant system on the copper circuit, and it generated a saleable copper product of 20-26% Cu grade at 80-86% recovery. The zinc circuit generated a saleable zinc product grading at 48-55% Zn at 80-94% recoveries. Some zinc losses were due to the deportment of some zinc in sauconite. Broken Hill Mines-1968, edited by M. Radmanovich and J. T. Woodcock, published by The Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Melbourne, 613 pages. Price $A15. This volume, containing some 65 technical papers, was produced for the 1968 annual conference of the Australasian Institute held at Broken Hill to mark the 75th Anniversary of that Institute, founded at Broken Hill in 1893. That conference also coincided with the 85th Anniversary of the discovery of the Broken Hill mining field. This closely reflects the position in this country, where the Witwatersrand gold fields were discovered in 1886, and our South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy will in March, 1969 be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the forerunners of our Institute. There is a comprehensive report of the geology of the Broken Hill area and the mineralogy of the ore body, and there are reports on the mining methods and the metallurgical procedures which have been developed over 85 years of operation of one of the great mining fields of the world. The value of most of the papers is enhanced by a large number of illustrations and photographs. An early section covers the academic and practical aspects of rock mechanics, prospecting, and exploration techniques are described in some detail. A third of the volume is devoted to mining, with papers on 26 aspects. The breadth of the coverage gives an indication of much specialized development, research, and consequent maturity in all departments. The detailed treatment of metallurgical aspects such as sizings of individual mineral particles throughout the milling stages and the development of an on-stream analysis system for lead will commend this volume to the specialist. The committee responsible for the production of this volume, which brings together much information previously only to be found after searching through numerous publications, are to be congratulated on a well produced comprehensive review of many aspects of the mining and metallurgical fields. Carlisle. B.Sc. (Eng.) Rand (Fellow) The authors are to be congratulated on drawing attention to the importance of surface characteristics in the treatment of gold grains. I must, however, confess to considerable doubts about the validity of the distribution of gold in "free" and "locked" form set out in Tables I to IV.

Palabora Mining Company is operating a copper block cave mine in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The mine was developed in the late nineties with a target ore reserve of 220 million tonnes of carbonatite at 0.69% copper. At 30,000 tonnes per day the operation had an estimated life of mine of approximately 23 years. Cave induced open pit side wall failure occurred in late 2004 with 130 million tonnes of waste reporting to the bottom of the open pit. This failure resulted in potential sterilization and dilution of the ore reserve and subsequent reduction in life of mine. Physical and numerical modelling indicated potential losses of up to 30% of the original ore reserves. Cave Management tools based on throughput principles are utilized to manage the failed waste ingress and ensure an optimum life of mine. Extracting the maximum rate possible, as soon as draw points are commissioned, with the view of achieving the highest production in the short term, is any mining operation?s goal as more money is required sooner. This approach, of course, improves the cash flow but presents a risk in the cave propagation profile as overall draw control is compromised. At Palabora it is evident from a Mineral Resource Throughput Management (MRTM) point of view that maximum production in the short term is not the solution. If high production rates are achieved and the profile of the cave is not manage correctly, this results in failed waste reporting to draw points earlier with adverse effects on grade. This would effectively and significantly shorten Palabora?s Life of Mine. The applications of good MRTM principles are required to assist the value chain for sustained profitability. The process commenced with change management paving the way for a better understanding and a holistic view for all role players.

This paper describes experimental investigations into the reductive decomposition of arsenopyrite/pyrite (FeAsS/FeS2), a gold and silver bearing iron/arsenic sulphide using metallic iron powder. The main objective was to establish and experimentally confirm the thermodynamic and kinetic feasibility of reductively decomposing the sulphide matrix for precious metals recovery. In this context, cyanidation leach tests were conducted on the reductive leach residues. The arsenopyrite/pyrite flotation concentrate, mainly studied in the hydrochloric acid medium, decomposed through the non?oxidative chemical dissolution reaction and the reductive decomposition reaction for the arsenopyrite and pyrite components, respectively. Desulphurization levels below 65% were achieved at pH values below 0.15 and iron to concentrate ratios above 1, and the system was characterized by overall very slow kinetics. The reaction system had a direct linear relationship with iron to concentrate ratio and an inverse relationship with pH. An analysis of the pyrite/iron galvanic system showed that pyrite forms a partially inert cathodic surface on which the anodic dissolution of iron occurs, supported by the hydrogen evolution reaction. This phenomenon explained the low desulphurization levels and the mineral decomposition seemed to be restricted to the non?oxidative chemical dissolution reaction for the arsenopyrite component. The cyanide leach of the reductive leach residues showed very little improvement in gold recovery. The reductive leach process for arsenopyrite/pyrite has considerable limitations in terms of both desulphurization and precious metals liberation.
