With the advent in recent years qf mechanization in deep-level gold and platinum mines, large quantities of rubber was are being used on both production and support vehicles. Conditions in these types of mines are extremely harsh and, as a result, we performance is significantly lower than in other types of mining such as open-cast base metal mining, where more favourable conditions prevail. Various options are available to the user to reduce tyre costs, including the use of retreads, the filing of tyres, and the repair of damaged tyres. While these methods may be generally successful in open-cast conditions, their use in deep-level mining needs to be carefully evaluated for each particular set of conditions. A basic requirement for any evaluation of we costs is the availability of reliable data on tyre performance and, for this reason, it is essential that proper tyre records are maintained This paper reviews the performance of tyres in deep-level gold and platinum mines in Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Company, Limited (JCI) over a period of about 8 years, and shows how the costs of retreading and tyre filing can be evaluated in practice. It also discusses the cost implications of repairing damaged tyres.

The mechanism of nodular crystallisation of graphite in the production of spheroidal cast Iron is not fully understood. The work reported In this paper confirms that in cast iron melts having a high Interfacial tension against the environmental atmosphere, the graphite tends to crystallise in nodules during solidification. The Influence of Interfacial tension between melt and solid graphite is similar.

Reference is made to the approach to mine cooling in which the service water is used as one of the means of distributing refrigeration, and attention is drawn to various engineering disciplines or functions necessary for effective distribution and reticulation of cold water from refrigeration plant. The demand for service water is intermittent, the peak flow-rates being typically two to three times the average flowrate. The refrigeration plant, on the other hand, must preferably be operated steadily throughout the day and night, with the result that a large storage dam for cold water must be incorporated into each system in order to even out the surge in demand for water. These dams should be operated as constant-temperature, variable-volume reservoirs. The conventional cascade system involving dams on each level is not the best for sending water down mines, and schemes are described that avoid the need for such dams. Reference is made to various tests that were carried out, and to several large systems that were installed. Management and organizational problems that could arise as a result of new technological developments in mine cooling are referred to, and cost figures are quoted to indicate the large potential savings, In addition to the improved environmental conditions, that can be achieved through the use of integrated water systems.

The Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM) is a joint venture between Rustenburg Platinum Mines Limited and Royal Bafokeng Resources (Pty) Ltd (Bafokeng). The mining lease has been granted over Boschkoppie 104JQ and is located approximately 10km south of the Pilanesberg Alkaline Complex. The Merensky Reef, which constitutes the principal ore body, is geologically complex. A relationship between its geological variability and the associated mineralisation has been established by defining a number of facies types. The Merensky Reef has been sub-divided into seven distinct facies types: the pegmatoidal facies, contact facies, FW1 pothole facies, FW3pothole facies, FW6 pothole facies, and FW7 pothole facies. The Merensky Reef, which does not form part of the potholed reef, has a large component of footwall mineralisation. The pothole facies, in contrast, has mineralisation located in the hangingwall. Statistical analysis of the facies types indicates that they are unique populations and hence need to be evaluated independently. The mining lease has distinct structural domains that have added additional complications to evaluation of the Merensky Reef. The Merensky facies on BRPM exhibit unique geological and statistical characteristics within well-defined structural blocks. Due to the extreme variability of the Merensky Reef on BRPM a unique approach has been developed, within Anglo Platinum, to evaluate the deposit. Mining cuts are defined and composited for the individual facies types, and then modelled individually by applying known geological controls. The resultant grade models are weighted based on statistical and local geological knowledge. The object of weighting the facies is to replicate the variability observed in the ore body. The introduction of stringent geological controls to the evaluation process has resulted in increased confidence in the in situgrades estimated as an input to the mine planning process

Underground observations in a coal mine have indicated failure oft he immediate roof above the bords. Careful observations and photographic recording of occurrences of these roof failures, termed ?roof guttering?, have been made. The occurrence of guttering results directly in roof instability, and indirectly, due to the interaction of the guttering with natural planes of weaknesses in the immediate roof rock. In this paper, relevant observations of roof guttering, possible mechanisms of formation of roof gutters, laboratory testing for determination of material strength and deformation properties, and numerical analyses to explain underground observations are described. Mapping of roof failures showed that these took place mainly towards the centre of the roadways. Roof guttering was observed often to occur violently and with little warning. Occurrence of roof guttering has a negative impact on production?some panels are abandoned, production times are increased and safety of workers is compromised. The numerical stress analyses showed that, although none of the constitutive behaviour criteria used predicted the observed underground failures correctly, the extension strain criterion gave the best agreement.

Hydraulic fracturing technology is presented as a solution to improve permeability and thus solve the extraction problem of coal seam gas in low-permeability gas-bearing coal seams. Given an existing group of original cracks, the propagation of main hydraulic cracks and hydraulic wing cracks was simulated using realistic failure process analysis software. The process represents the structural transformation of hydraulic fracturing and permeability improvements caused by it. In addition, a field test for improving the permeability of gassy coal seams by hydraulic fracturing was also conducted. The propagation of the main cracks and wing cracks by hydraulic fracturing forms a network of original joint cracks, hydraulic wing cracks, and main hydraulic cracks, which improve the permeability of the coal seam. High-pressure water in the drill hole and in the main hydraulic cracks permeates the two flanks of the hole, forming the permeating water pressure. With an increase in drill water pressure and an extension of the main hydraulic cracks, the permeating water pressure on both sides of the main hydraulic cracks in the coal mass also increases. Hydraulic cracks tend to form connections through rock bridges. The extension of hydraulic wing cracks through connections in the rock bridges between the cracks transforms the rock mass to a fractured structure and improves its permeability. Hydraulic fracturing technology for improving permeability in underground conditions can increase the amount of gas drainage by a factor of 15. A stress relief area develops at a radial distance of 10-2.0 m from the hydraulic fracturing drill hole, while an area of rising stresses, called the pressurized area, develops a further 15 m away from the pressurized hole. Practice has proved the existence of the stress transfer phenomenon and the high stress area after fracturing. This kind of hydraulic fracturing technology is more effective in holes drilled from underground than in surface drill holes, with respect to costs and controllability, and is therefore the major trend in gas drainage development in coal mines.

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of grain size distribution control of the raw material mixture on the permeability of the green sinter bed and the properties of the produced sinter. This was achieved by evaluating the granulation characteristics of the sinter mixture (moisture content, granulation time and mean granule diameter) in terms of its green bed permeability, and evaluating the productivity of the sinter bed, the coke rate, tumble index (TI), abrasion index (AI), reduction disintegration index(RDI) and reducibility (RI) of the produced sinter. The raw sinter mixtures contained combinations of Thabazimbi iron ore, Sishen iron ore, coke, lime and return fines. The grain size distributions were controlled by removing the ?0.5 mm size fractions of the return fines and coke, and the ?1 mm size fraction of lime. Of the examined mixtures, a mixture of 20 mass% Thabazimbi iron ore, 80 mass% Sishen iron ore and fluxes where the coke, lime and return fines were all sized had the highest granulation effectiveness and permeability. The sintering properties of the mixtures in which the grain size distributions were controlled, were very similar for all the mixtures, but superior to the base case mixture in which the grain size distribution was not controlled. Amandelbult Mine is currently undertaking a trial to mechanise the mining of the UG2 reef through the introduction of room and pillar mining. As part of the trial, a system of managing the control of the hanging wall has been introduced, based on systems and technology that are proving successful in the nearby coal mining industry. The principal features are the use of a high bond strength, stiff bolting system which can be easily installed to a high standard, and a range of in situ tests and measurements to optimise the level of support installed to control the movement of the hanging wall. The rock bolt system and the measurements and tests described are new to the platinum mining industry. The paper describes these systems and their adaptation and application to hard rock mining. La Mine d’Amandelbult est actuellement dans des essais en vue de mécaniser l’extraction dans la veine UG2 grâce à l’introduction d’une exploitation par chambres et piliers. Dans le cadre de ces essais, un système de gestion de la paroi suspendue a été introduit, base sur des systèmes et une technologie qui prouvent donner de bons résultats dans l’industrie voisine d’extraction de la houille. Les caractéristiques principales sont l’utilisation d’un système de verrouillage raide et à forte adhérence qui peut être installé à un haut niveau de qualité et une gamme d’essais et de mesures in situ pour optimiser le niveau de soutien installé pour contrôler le mouvement de la paroi suspendue. Le système de verrouillage de la roche ainsi que les mesures et les essais décrits sont une nouveauté dans l’industrie minière du platine. La communication décrit ces systèmes ainsi que leur adaptation et leur application à l’exploitation minière en roche dure. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) technology has come a long way in its application for comminution duty in hard rock mineral processing in the last three years. Several major projects in copper, nickel, gold, molybdenum, platinum, and iron ore have opted for this technology. Advances in wear abatement technology have established the HPGR as a reliable machine with the required high utilization and availability. The HPGR captures the imagination as the next step change improvement in ore processing, based on the following benefits: ?Energy efficiency (potentially 10?30% more efficient)?very topical in an increasingly ?green? society, and in times of rapidly increasing energy costs and availability concerns. 2008 has shown this to be especially important in Southern Africa ?High (and stable) throughput with a relatively small footprint ?Lower operation cost ?Liberation benefits ?Creative ?mine-to-metal? system improvements made possible by HPGR. The platinum industry, renowned for its historically conservative approach, has not been left behind with two significant new HPGR installations, one in Platreef application and one in UG2 application, commissioned in 2008. While the decision for the Platreef application was driven primarily by comminution circuit capacity and design imperatives, the UG2 application seeks to develop a flowsheet that will have a significant recovery benefit in addition to capacity increase and reduced operating cost. The Platreef application of HPGR also provides the opportunity to introduce a novel comminution flowsheet and to demonstrate exceptionally low wear rates treating very hard, abrasive and variable ore types. The HPGR lends itself for inclusion in existing SABC circuits to increase the capacity of the plant and mills. With current PGM prices many operations are attracted to the HPGR technology benefits. The HPGR clearly has the potential to transform entrenched opinion and provide decision makers with significant alternative comminution options. This paper aims to provide an overview of the current applications and to speculate on the transforming stimulus that the HPGR exerts on industry.

Dredging is an industry in constant transformation. It has changed tremendously in the last decades. The traditional dredging activity, like construction and maintaining ports and harbours, desilting of drainage and irrigation channels, keeping reservoirs at depths and removing sediments from waterways, is still of importance. However, it is surpassed by other applications of dredging technology. Reclamation is an important example, where large amounts of sand are dredged, transported over large distances and used to make new land for industrial, housing, airport and other infrastructural purposes. Beach nourishment and other protective measurements should be mentioned here as well. Other applications like offshore winning of oil and gas, environmental clean-up, mining of interesting minerals like gold, diamonds, titanium and tin as well as aggregates from inland and offshore deposits are of importance. For all of these dredging applications equipment is required, and with changing circumstances and constraints, the design and use altered significantly. Larger dredging depths and increasing capacities require an impressive scale-up of equipment and tools. A demand for higher accuracy and selectivity set the requirement for a higher level of automation and control in combination with a well trained crew. Operations under more difficult circumstances and with other soil characteristics necessitated the development of new dredging components and systems. A sound basis for all developments was and still is a better understanding of the various dredging processes. This paper will highlight some eye-catching developments in the dredging industry. It will focus on issues in the field of hydraulic transport such as ever increasing capacity and dredging depth, as well as the pumping of large size materials.

Automation technologies are increasingly adopted in different mines worldwide. This paper presents the technical aspects of vehicle automation applications at two Noranda operating mines. Teleoperation of 5 LHD’s at Noranda’s Bell Allard mine is used in order to meet aggressive mining requirements under difficult conditions. The equipment is performing under high demand for reliability and performance. In order to further increase performance, automated loading has been commissioned on one of the LHD’s and is being tested. Results to date indicate improved performance with respect to an operator through better filling of the bucket, fewer passes at the muck pile and shorter cycles. Noranda’s Brunswick mine is currently commissioning an automated haulage zone where two optically guided trucks transport ore from a remotely operated chute to two ore passes. Expected operational advantages include increased system capacity and enhanced safety and comfort for the operator. Monitoring to date indicates that the trucks can operate reliably under the conditions imposed by mine production.

"In atomic emission and atomic absorption spectrophotometry, the sample is heated to a high temperature and thereby decomposed into atoms and ions that absorb or emit visible or ultraviolet electromagnetic radiation at energies characteristic of the elements involved. The flame test is a very simple form of this technique. The yellowing of a flame by the addition of salt, for example, occurs because the sodium in salt emits strongly in the yellow portion of the visible spectrum. These methods are especially useful for low concentrations of metallic elements in both qualitative and quantitative analysis.Interference on Iep-OES has not always been considered a serious problem, especially in the beginning, when compared with Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. This was due to the euphoria created by the new technique. It meant that criticism was subdued. The Iep was vastly superior to the Atomic Absorption technique, that the interferences suffered by the Atomic Absorption technique dwarfed the little interferences suffered by the rep-OES technique. This is how rep-OES has had a reputation as an interference free technique."

Platinoids in the Witwatersrand system C. A. Cousins. (visitor) Study of the composition, nature and mode of occurrence of platinoid minerals in the conglomerates of the Witwatersrand System leads to some interesting conclusions. Genetic evidence strongly favours a placer origin, while comparison with modern alluvial platinoids supports this view but also indicates that they are very mature alluvials. The compositional patterns and distribution of the platinoids in the Witwatersrand basin suggest the water was saline. Study of the mineralogy was greatly facilitated by the electron-probe.

For some years the Collieries Research Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa has been engaged in the development and application of computer programmes to aid in the solution of rock mechanics problems. It is the purpose of this paper to introduce some of the programmes having general applicability. A system capable of predicting stresses and displacements induced by large-scale tabular excavations is discussed. A finite element programme especially designed for handling layered continuum problems, and which is being used extensively has been supplemented by an automatic mesh generation facility that reduces problem preparation times considerably. Some typical applications of these programmes are described. An entirely new approach, potentially capable of performing linear three-dimensional continuum analysis at practical cost is introduced.

Society is fully justified in its concern about the environment, but that concern may, at present, be too uncritical It is, for instance, essential to establish that there is a valid environmental impact, and that there is truly a causal link between a human activity and an observed shift in environmental conditions. In establishing these, it inessential to recognize that scientific proof offers consistency, but that it can never provide completeness. Thus, no amount of scientific endeavour can ever prove that mitigation of the effects of human activity will be perfect. Society normally expresses its concern through legislation. The existing legislation in South Africa is reviewed, and it is found that [>legislation regarding water is probably too stringent to be effective, >legislation regarding air and land use is probably too lax, >all the environmental legislation is too fragmented to be efficient, and the Department of Environmental Affairs is hamstrung by inter-departmental rivalry. ] It is accordingly concluded that, if means are to be found for ensuring adequate mitigation of environmental impact in the face of ongoing economic development, it is necessary to establish a Judicial Commission on Environmental Affairs advised by, but given greater powers than, the departments currently active in environmental maters. This Commission should be charged with creating, perhaps over a decade, a body of legislation that would guide development while protecting the environment in its widest sense.

The First International Symposium on Seismicity in Mines, organized by the South African National Group on Rock Mechanics in collaboration with the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was held in Randburg (near Johannesburg) from 13th to 17th September, 1982. It was the first attempt to provide an international forum for the consideration of seismic problems specifically affecting mines or associated with mining. Numerical mathematics The South African Society for Numerical Mathematics and the Computer Science Department of the University of Natal are organizing the Ninth Symposium on Numerical Mathematics to be held in Durban from 18th to 20th July, 1983.

The support of stopes and tunnels in South African gold mines subject to rockburst damage requires special attention. The interaction of a seismic wave with either a stope or a tunnel is subject to a number of variables, namely the distance from the source of the event, the ground velocity, the orientation of the excavation with respect to the direction of the seismic wave, and the geology and fracturing around the excavation. This paper discusses these factors in relation to the support requirements in stopes and tunnels. The need for the integration of hydraulic props with stope support and the use of yielding anchors for tunnel support are emphasized.

In situ leaching tests with thiourea as the lixiviant were caried out in two worked-out stopes at the No. 6 shaft at Rand Leases Gold Mining Company. Dissolution rates of 0,9 and 0,7 9 of gold per week per 100 m2 of footwal area were achieved. A major disadvantage of the method seems to be the slow rate of dissolution of the gold, which is probably caused by poor contact and slow mass transfer between the lixiviant and the gold surfaces. Under full-scale application, the loss of lixiviant by leakage could also be a very important factor. Furthermore, the oxidation products of thiourea may 'poison' the activated carbon that is used for the recovery of the gold. The method may therefore be economically viable only in stopes that contain high values of residual gold.

Water is a valuable and in many areas a scarce resource. Governmental legislation regulates the environmental impact of water usage and wastewater disposal through the issue of licenses. These requirements mean that hydrometallurgical refineries must ensure that water consumption and water disposal is managed on a continuous basis in order to prevent the repeal of their operating license. Water balances are often overlooked during the design of a hydrometallurgical refinery. Recent changes in environmental legislation have forced both design engineers and operational management to review water use and disposal within these processes. Unlike concentrators where water can easily be recovered by recycling from tailing dams, water introduced into hydrometallurgical refineries becomes contaminated with soluble metals and thus requires pre-treatment prior to disposal. This paper discusses the various concerns that need to be considered during design and operation of hydrometallurgical refineries with respect to the water balance.
