Stainless steel must maintain a reasonable price against other competitive materials. Therefore, the ferrochrome price must be low enough and profitable for the producers of stainless steel. The investment and operational costs of ferrochrome production are greatly dependent on the availability of the process and the production rate. Thus the furnace size and production rate in submerged electric arc furnaces will be greatly increased in the near future. The ferrochrome production per furnace, e.g. at Outokumpu?s Tornio Works, increased from 30 000 t/a to 165 000 t/a in about 35 years. The same trend will continue globally but now much more quickly. The Outokumpu ferrochrome process at Tornio Works uses sintered chromite pellets and upgraded lumpy ore as a chromite source. Metallurgical coke is used as a reductant. Reliable smelting in a large furnace demands the correct charge composition and well-known characteristics of the charge components. The quality and electrical conductivity of cokes (normally used) has the most important role for the electrical conductivity of the smelting charge. The results of the measured electrical conductivity of different cokes and the smelting charge with many controlling factors are presented here. These measurements were performed over the years for our own purposes at the laboratory of Outokumpu Research Oy (ORC), in Pori, Finland.

Reagents are added to the flotation process of Merensky Reef ores to achieve specific functions that enable the separation of valuable minerals from gangue minerals on the basis of the difference in their surface properties. However, due to the complexity of the process, the various interactions that occur as well as the incomplete liberation of the ore and range of minerals present, it is difficult to quantify the behaviour of each of the reagents. More specifically, changes made to achieve a particular outcome may have secondary effects that can override the desired effect. If all the effects and interactions can be accounted for, it is possible to manipulate reagent suites and obtain better overall metallurgical performance. This paper discusses the effect of the addition of copper sulphate at different operating points of the recovery of the sulphide minerals. Batch flotation tests indicated that the recovery of chalcopyrite was not affected when operating conditions were varied, whereas pentlandite recovery was strongly affected by the point of reagent addition, and pyrrhotite recovery was enhanced by copper sulphate addition, irrespective of the point of addition, with the extent being dependent on the ore source. Floatable gangue was activated by copper sulphate in the presence of the dithiophosphate collector. Froth stability was also affected by copper sulphate addition.

The quality of Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS) at Skorpion Zinc is of utmost importance for efficient operation of the Solvent Extraction (SX) Plant. Suspended solids in the PLS forms CRUD in the settlers, resulting in reduced zinc transfer capacity and increased impurity carry over to Electrowinning. The Ishigaki Fibre-Wakishimizu filter (fibre media rapid filtration equipment) has been identified as polishing filter that potentially could remove solids from the PLS of Skorpion Zinc. A pilot unit with 20m³/h capacity was tested on site over a period of 9 months under plant operating conditions in the refinery. The FW filter produces a clear filtrate, acceptable for the Solvent Extraction. Turbidity is improved by 72%. Gravimetric analysis indicates a 47% removal of solids. However, the gravimetric method is biased by a co-precipitation of saturated salts during the analysis. Filter media is blinded by the Skorpion Zinc PLS solution, as result of suspended solids and process chemistry. The media could not be regenerated to acceptable conditions. Further testwork to investigate the impact of process solution chemistry modification on blinding is undertaken. Based on the outcome of this investigation a final decision on the FW filter can be taken.

Traditionally the feed to coal preparation plants was de-slimed at 0,5 mm. The +0,5 mm size fraction was processed via dense-medium cyclones and the -0,5 mm size fraction was beneficiated with froth flotation, water-only cyclones or spirals. With the introduction of large diameter cyclones, the aperture sizes of de-sliming screens have progressively increased to about 3 mm in the belief that the larger cyclones are not able to effectively beneficiate coal which has a particle size below the ?breakaway? size. The efficiency of separation in the large dense-medium cyclones is improved by presenting a coarser feed to the units. At the same time, the capacity of the de-sliming screens is increased due to the larger screen apertures and in effect, the throughput capacity of the dense-medium section is increased. The 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction, which was previously processed in the dense-medium cyclones, is now added to the fine coal size fraction and processed by water-only methods such as Teetered Bed Separators (TBS) and spirals. Whether this practice is the most economical way to process the 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction requires further thought since the best processing route for the 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction will depend on a number of factors, amongst which are: o The washability of the coal and the amount of near-density material o Processing efficiency o Specification of the required product o The price paid by the customer for the product o The cost of processing the coal Breakaway size The ?breakaway? size is defined as the particle size below which the Epm of the smaller particles starts to decrease significantly. Bosman1 provides an approximate breakaway size versus cyclone diameter (Figure 1). It should be kept in mind though that the Epm of the small particles is a function not only of the cyclone diameter but also of feed pressure, medium density, medium viscosity, particle shape and density, top-size of particles in the feed, etc.

Heavy metals and sulphates in acid mine drainage (AMD) can beadsorbed onto bentonite clay, leaving clean water and a heavy metal loaded clay precipitate as products. Due to the toxicity of heavy metals, the clay could not be disposed of safely in the past. A method was thus required to remove the heavy metal content from the clay. Acid leaching was proposed to liberate the heavy metals from the loaded clay. Sulphuric, nitric and hydrochloric acid were considered as lixiviants. Loaded clay samples were leached over a range of pH values from 1 to 3.5 to identify an optimum leaching condition. From the results it was found that metals can berecovered from loaded bentonite clay by means of acid leaching and the optimum pH for heavy metal liberation was found to be 2.5, with uranium as an exception, being optimally leached at a pH of 3. This allows for the possibility of selective leaching. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction analyses indicated that the clay structure did not deteriorate significantly during acid leaching, suggesting that the bentonite could be reused. The treatment of AMD with bentonite clay, and subsequent acid leaching of the clay, is a sustainable solution, and current outcomes could possibly lead to industrial implementation of the process during water purifying and metal recovery from waste streams. ABSRACT: In this paper numerical simulation of jointed block mass behaviour obtained in an experimental study has been presented. Singh et al. (2002) conducted extensive tests on the jointed model materials with several joint configurations. The results of this experimental study were used to validate the strength behaviour of numerical block mass model developed using professionally available software. This software basically contains different kinds of material models. From the results of numerical simulation the existence of strength anisotropy was observed. The strength anisotropy so obtained has been compared with the experimental values reported by Singh et al. (2002). The anisotropic curves in both cases are U-shaped with flat base. They show good agreement in sliding mode of failure zone in which inclination ß (= 90° - ?) of joint set-I lie between 20° to 40° for all cases of interlocking. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: In dieser numerischen Papiersimulation des verbundenen Blockmasse Verhaltens, das in einer experimentellen Studie erhalten wird, ist dargestellt worden. Singh et al. (2002) leiteten umfangreiche Tests auf den verbundenen vorbildlichen Materialien mit einigen gemeinsamen Konfigurationen. Die Resultate dieser experimentellen Studie wurden verwendet, um das Stärke Verhalten des numerischen Blockmasse Modells zu validieren, das mit professionell vorhandener Software entwickelt wurde. Diese Software enthält im Allgemeinen unterschiedliche Arten der materiellen Modelle. Von den Resultaten der numerischen Simulation wurde das Bestehen von Stärke Anisotrophie beobachtet. Die Stärke Anisotrophie also erreicht ist mit den experimentellen Werten verglichen worden, die von Singh et al. (2002) berichtet werden. Die anisotropen Kurven in beiden Fällen sind mit flacher Unterseite u-förmig. Singh et autres (2002) ont effectué les essais étendus sur les matériaux modèles joints avec plusieurs configurations communes. Les résultats de cette étude expérimentale ont été employés pour valider le comportement de résistance du modèle numérique de la masse de bloc développé en utilisant le logiciel professionnellement disponible. Ce logiciel contient fondamentalement différents genres de modèles matériels. Des résultats de la simulation numérique on a observé l'existence de l'anisotropie de force. L'anisotropie de force ainsi obtenu a été comparée aux valeurs expérimentales rapportées par Singh et autres (2002). Les courbes anisotropes dans les deux cas sont en U avec la base plate. Elles montrent la bonne concordance dans le mode coulissant de la zone d'échec en lequel la inclination ß (= 90° - ?) du joint placez-Je le mensonge entre 20° à 40° pour tous les cas d'enclencher.

A simulated rockburst was conducted underground at Kopanang Mine, previously called Vaal Reefs No. 9 Shaft. The rockburst was simulated by means of a large blast detonated in solid rock close to a crosscut sidewall. The simulated rockburst involved the design of the seismic source, seismic observations in the near and far field, high-speed video filming, a study of rock mass conditions such as fractures, joints, rock strength etc. Knowledge of the site conditions before and after the simulated rockburst was also gained. Some of the important findings are listed below: ?Two areas of damage were identified on the blasting wall: (i) an area of high-intensity damage in which ground velocities of 3.3 m/s were recorded by an accelerometer, which was subsequently ejected in a block of rock, (ii) an area of low-intensity damage where ground velocities of 1.6 m/s were recorded by an accelerometer which remained on the tunnel wall. ?High-speed filming revealed rock fragments being ejected from the wall at velocities in the range of 0.6 m/s to 2.5 m/s. The measurements were taken in the area of low-intensity damage. As planned, no gas pressure was directly involved in damaging the wall of the tunnel. ?The attenuation of peak particle velocities for the main blast in the near field (6 m to 30 m), as a function of distance R, was found to be proportional to R-1.7. ?The simulated rockburst was recorded as a local magnitude ML= 1.3 by the Klerksdorp regional seismic network. ?Peak particle velocities from nearby blasting, recorded on the tunnel wall after the simulated rockburst, were about six times greater then peak particle velocities recorded from the same source area before the simulated rockburst.

The data base of failed coal pillars in South Africa was analysed with regard to the time of failure in an effort to develop a method to predict how long after their formation coal pillars will fail. It was found that meaningful results could only be obtained by splitting the data base up into groups that displayed similar behaviour. It was postulated, based on observation and experience, that coal pillars fail by a process of progressive weakening progressing into the pillar from the edges. Minimum pillar dimensions to ensure failure were calculated?these were the dimensions that corresponded to a minimum ?real? factor of safety. From the scaling distance required to reach the minimum safety factor, rates of scaling for the failed pillars were calculated based on the observed real lives of the pillars. It was found that the rates of scaling were unique for different mining areas and that they correlated directly with mining height and inversely with time. Using the derived scaling rates, the predicted pillar lives were back calculated for the pillars in the data base of failed pillars. In two of the three groups, the predicted lives correlated well with the observed lives on a one-to-one comparison. In all cases, the predicted lives were in the same time range as the observed lives. Overall, the frequency of predicted lives closely replicated the observed frequency of observed lives of the pillars in the data base of failed pillars. The method was successful in distinguishing between the data base of failed and a representative sample of intact pillars. While the predictions matched the observed lives of failed pillars, the predictions of expected lives for intact (hitherto unfailed) pillars were orders of magnitude greater. It is now possible to estimate the frequencies of future pillar failures for the purposes of mine closure and undermining of surface structures within broad bands.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is defined as ‘The goods and services that support the electronic display, processing, storage and transmission of information’. Early in 2002 the South African Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) commissioned a study into the diffusion and adoption of ICT in eight sectors of the economy. The platinum mining Sector was one of these. The key findings presented in this paper are based on the platinum sector component of that study. The paper examines the theoretical basis behind technology transfer and innovation diffusion and presents the results of an ICT diffusion survey carried out in the South African platinum mining sector. ICT is shown as the modern day technological tool which is an accelerator of economic development. The current state of ICT diffusion in the platinum mining sector is defined and projections for the near future are given. Recommendations which will ensure smooth and full adoption are presented and justified.

Silver tarnishes readily in common atmospheres and is accelerated in humid atmospheres. Tarnish is the formation of silver sulphide on the surface of silver when it is exposed to a wide range of sulphur-containing atmospheres. Tarnish is unattractive and highly undesirable, and can be removed either with a silver polish or a chemical dip. Dips are generally only recommended when heavy black tarnish cannot be removed with a polish, and care must be taken during cleaning because these can contain aggressive chemicals and give off hazardous and unpleasant smelling fumes. Polishes work best for large areas of plain undecorated silver, and form part of a regular cleaning programme. Some polishes contain chemicals that inhibit tarnishing, but these generally only have a short life. Several methods have been developed to reduce tarnish formation on Silver; these include alloying, surface treatment, and coatings. The authors evaluated a range of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) surface treatments and coatings in earlier research. Four treatments/coatings increased the time to noticeable tarnish by more than ten fold, and the results were reported at the International Corrosion Congress (ICC) in 2005, and at the Mint Directors Conference (MDC) in 2006. SAM treatment using 95% 1-hexadecanethiol (C16H34S) was found to give good anti-tarnish performance and showed potential for the commercial treatment of Sterling silver. Therefore research was performed to optimise the methods of application of this type of coating to provide an easier, faster, and more-user friendly technique to provide an anti-tarnish treatment. Included will be a brief history of the Alloys division as well as of each plant within the division. The Xstrata chrome plants utilise a wide variety of production processes, including Xstrata's Premus process, the Outokumpu process, and the conventional process. Xstrata?s Lion Project is underway, with commissioning expected in the third quarter of 2006. The new smelter will utilize Xstrata?s patented Premus process, and the competitiveness of the Premus process is discussed.

Keywords: Submerged-arc furnace, plasma furnace, d.c. furnace, scale up, Søderberg electrodes, smart grid, demand side management, load shedding This paper argues that the scale up of furnaces and the supply of electricity are going to be two major issues that will affect the ferro-alloy industry in the near future, and that economic factors will drive this development. The most common type of furnace for producing ferro-alloys at present is the submerged-arc furnace with three electrodes, fed from a three-phase a.c. electrical supply. The scale up of this technology has now reached a fundamental constraint, which is caused by the electrical reactance of the secondary circuit. If the economy of any further scale up is to be achieved in the future then a different technology will have to be used. The supply of electrical power in future is likely to become a more complex issue than it is at present. Existing submerged-arc furnaces tend to run at fairly steady loads, but the ability to swing the load under demand-side management may offer advantages, and may allow a furnace to get cheaper power from the organisations that supply this power. This will have to be counterbalanced against the nuisance factors incurred by having a varying load in the operation of the furnace. Various options are therefore discussed in this paper. The possibility of scale up of Søderberg electrodes is discussed, as well as the use of d.c. power and multiple electrodes. Some of the issues with load swinging are also examined. A particular scenario is also briefly presented to show that considerable further scale up of ferro-alloy furnaces is still possible.

This paper discusses the comparative performances of the three activated carbon adsorption circuits at the West Wits operations of Anglogold. These circuits consist of two pump-cell circuits (at Two Plant, formerly Elandsrand and at Three plant) and a conventional counter-current adsorption circuit (at Mponeng plant). The implications of the improved performance of the pump-cell plants are discussed.

Since then, the smelter complex has undergone considerable changes. Mineral economics, UG2 exploitation, and changing environmental legislation have enforced numerous process upgrades, yet a common-sense approach has always been adopted. This document details the major changes in the smelter complex at Mineral Processes (Minpro) over the past 15 years, and provides the rationale for the changes.

Outcomes from a workshop organized through the SAIMM revealed that the minerals and metals industry must develop its ?Engineering Team? if it is to continue to meet the challenges of globalization. The very economy of the country is largely dependent on a competitive and stable engineering team within the minerals and metals sector. With the Chamber of Mines (COM) passing on its education and training initiatives to the industry, the professional bodies like SAIMM must (despite meagre resources) continue the good work done through the COM in the past. The workshop highlighted recruitment and selection, further/higher education, socialization and initial training, deployment and retention and continuing education as priority areas. These are further detailed in this report. Office Bearers have considered the outcomes and the areas where the Institute should or should not be involved have been stated.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, sulphuric acid, sulphur dioxide The raw material for sulphuric acid manufacture is clean SO2 gas. It comes from (i) burning molten by-product sulphur; (ii) roasting or smelting metal sulphide concentrates, and (iii) decomposing contaminated organic chemical process sulphuric acid catalyst. Efficient gas cleaning is required for metallurgical and contaminated acid decomposition gases, especially the former. Sulphuric acid is made from SO2 gas by (i) oxidizing the SO2(g) to SO3(g) in contact with supported liquid-phase catalyst then (ii) reacting the resulting SO3(g) with the water component of 98.5 mass% H2SO4, 1.5 mass% H2O acid. This paper discusses the reasons for these process steps and indicates how acidmaking can be controlled and optimized. Special emphasis is placed on SO2(g) oxidation efficiency and how it is influenced by feed gas composition, feed gas temperature, catalyst composition, catalyst bed pressure, number of catalyst beds, and double versus single contact acidmaking. In addition, a review of various other treatment methods for SO2-bearing gases is provided. A brief description of each process is included along with commentary on their technical and economic applicability for use at metallurgical facilities.

In light of the apparent productivity benefits provided by mechanised stoping, Impala Platinum Limited commissioned a study to investigate its possible implementation for mining reserves located 1200 – 1700 m below surface. This paper records the methodology employed for designing a support system for such mechanised mining, as well as initial conclusions of the work done. Preliminary results show the concept to be technically feasible; work was however stopped due to financial non-viability. En considération des bénéfices de production apparents que donne l’exploitation par gradins mécanisée, Impala Platinum Limited a commissionné une étude visant à examiner sa mise en œuvre possible pour des réserves minières situées à 1200 – 1700 m sous la surface. L’étude présente rapporte la méthodologie employée pour créer un système de support pour ce genre d’exploitation mécanisée, ainsi que les conclusions initiales de ce projet. Les résultats préliminaires montrent que le concept est techniquement faisable ; cependant le travail fut arrêté à cause de difficultés de rentabilité. Im Licht des offensichtlichen Produktivitätsnutzens auf Grund mechanisierten Stossbaus, kommissionierte Impala Platinum Limited eine Studie, die dessen mögliche Implementierung für den Abbau von Reserven 1200 - 1700 m unterhalb der Oberfläche untersuchen soll. Dieses Elaborat dokumentiert sowohl die Methode die für das Design eines Unterstützungssystems für eine derartige mechanisierte Abbauweise angewendet wird als auch die anfänglichen Konklusionen der geleisteten Arbeit. Anfängliche Resultate zeigen daß das Konzept technisch durchführbar ist; die Arbeit wurde jedoch wegen der finanziellen Nichtrealisierarkeit gestoppt.
