The Shebandowan mine and concentrator, with a capacity of 9072 t/week (10,000 st per week), was opened in 1972 after several years of environmental study and planning. The mine is located in a popular vacation cottage .area about 96 km (60 miles) west of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Undertaken before environmental assessment procedures had become an established requirement, Shebandowan is one of the first Canadian examples of effectively integrating environmental work into overall planning. Although it is an underground mine, many of the environmental considerations are common to open-pit operations, and hence, it provides a case history for the use of all mine planners. Computers can play a part in such studies by simulating the annual production of mine wastes, by on-line polling of environmental sensors and by processing sensor data. Early attention was focused on establishing base-line conditions in a two-year water quality monitoring program. Since production began, water quality monitoring has shown that mining has not caused any significant changes. However, mine drainage disposal arrangements had to be modified in the light of operating experience. There is no townsite associated with the mine, and workers commute from established municipalities. Harmonious relations have been achieved with local cottage residents after their initial fears were dispelled. Plans are ready to begin revegetating the tailings when a sufficient area of dry elevated tailings has been accumulated. Rehabilitation of the land disturbed during development was begun before start-up and was completed during initial operations.

6.1-SOIL MECHANICS WALTER C. SHERMAN, JR. 6.1.1-DEFINITION Soil mechanics is concerned with the behavior of soils in relation to the design, construction and performance of engineering works. In this context, soils include all uncemented materials, such as, gravels, sands, silts and clays, either naturally or artificially deposited, and, under certain conditions, weakly cemented, badly broken or weathered rocks. Many types of mine wastes have physical properties similar to those of soils and thus are amenable to analysis by the principles of soil mechanics. The principles of soil mechanics are used to solve such problems as the stability of various types of structures with respect to failure of the supporting soils, determination of soil pressures and deformations in the design of foundations and retaining structures, analyses of seepage and under seepage, and stability with respect to sliding of excavated and natural slopes and embankments. 6.1.2--SOIL PROPERTIES Soils are classified on the basis of index properties, such as, particle-size distribution and plasticity characteristics. The Unified Soil Classification System1 used to classify soils for engineering purposes is shown in Table 6-1. Other physical properties important from an engineering standpoint include natural water content, density, permeability, shear strength and compressibility. Physical properties are evaluated on the basis of carefully conducted laboratory tests. Procedures for laboratory testing are presented by Lambe. 2 Soils, either of natural or artificial deposition, are complex three-phase materials consisting of solids, water and gas (usually air or water vapor). One of the most important principles in soil mechanics is based on the concept of effective stress in the soil-water system. A stress, a, applied to a saturated soil is taken partly by the soil particles (effective stress, a'), and partly by the water in the voids (neutral stress or pore water pressure, u,) so that a' = a - u,. Only the effective stress affects the mobilization of frictional resistance between soil particles. In partially saturated soils, the pore-water pressure is negative due to capillary effects. The effective stress relation remains valid for small negative pore pressures, but anomolies arise if the soil is significantly unsaturated. In this case, the pore pressure is commonly assumed as equal to the pore air pressure, u,, so that [ u' = u - u..] 6.1.3--SOIL EXPLORATIONS Soil explorations are carried out by borings or test pits. Hvorslev3 has reviewed procedures and boring requirements, such as, type, depth and spacing employed. In general, soil strata are logged and representative exploratory samples are recovered for classification purposes and for determining the subsurface soil profile, which is constructed utilizing also knowledge of the geology of a site. Agglomeration by balling in cylindrical or shallow pan devices dates back to the early part of this century. The first sintering tests conducted by Dwight-Lloyd on nonferrous ores included a mixing step for ore, flux and fuel carried out in a deep pan device similar to the balling pans, or discs, presently in use. Further work directed mainly toward sintering of ferrous and nonferrous ores always included a preparatory step, usually referred to as mixing, agglomerating or green-balling of the ingredients. In the late forties and early fifties two methods of particle preparation prior to firing were in general use. In Europe the balling pan was used predominantly, both as a mixer and as a pelletizer. In the United States many pilot plants and semi¬commercial plants used balling drums. When the first iron ore pelletizing plants were built in this country, the most frequently used device for green-balling was the cylindrical drum. At the same time, the pan device was used both in Europe and the United States for many other materials such as fertilizer, cement, flyash, alumina and copper concentrates, as well as to mix the feed for sinter machines. The difference between these two balling devices - -the drum and the disc - has been the subject of much discussion and is well covered by several papers included in the 1962 publication "Agglomeration' issued by AIMS, based on their 1961 International Symposium held in Philadelphia. Permanent ventilation controls such as stoppings, overcasts, and undercasts for use in coal mines are required to meet MSHA’s safety standards for fire endurance and flexural strength. Due to technological advances in materials and their design for use as ventilation controls, an engineering program was established to evaluate newer or “nontraditional” ventilation controls. The program is intended to assist manufacturers, enforcement personnel and mine operators in determining if “nontraditional” ventilation controls, for example plastic membrane construction and lightweight block, meet the prescribed safety standards. The program is presented with a description of required tests and examples of products evaluated.

Iron oxides are unique in that they are the only significant colored mineral found in a natural state suitable for use as a pigment after being pulverized to pigmentary size. The world production of iron oxide pigments is estimated by the authors to be between 350 and 400 kt. The fact that highly colored natural deposits of iron ore are found throughout the world accounts for its use in prehistoric man's artistic cave paintings. These early artists did not realize that they had established man's first paint test which now has some 20,000 years of exposure. In addition to abundance, iron oxides (about 7% of the earth's crust) have the advantage of low cost, permanency, and are non- toxic. Through the centuries, succeeding civilizations have utilized iron oxides as a major source for decoration and protection when these properties were desired. In the last century the chemical industry has improved on nature by developing a complete range of synthetic iron oxide pigments which surpass the pigments produced from natural iron ores in uniformity, color quality, and chemical purity. In the United States, the combined production of natural and synthetic iron oxides produced sales of over $97 million in 1980 (Spimad, Jr., 1980), increasing to $138 million by 1990 (Templeton, 1990) NOMENCLATURE With the increasing importance of the synthetic iron oxides it is necessary to make a distinction between the natural or mineral pigments and the synthetic pigments. Natural pigments are those products that are derived from selected ores and should not be confused with iron ores mined for steel production. Iron ores that are mined for steel must be capable of being mined and reduced to iron on a competitive commercial basis. These ores are selected on the basis of iron content and processing economics. It is therefore unusual when iron ores for steel production are suitable for use as mineral pigments. Natural pigment ore sources are selected for their special physical-chemical properties and are able to command a premium price over iron ores used for steel manufacturing. Synthetic pigments, and in this instance iron oxides, are those pigments produced from basic chemicals. Through chemical synthesis pigmentary particles are produced as opposed to the use of comminution, the major procedure common to all natural iron oxide pigments.

4.1 INTRODUCTION There have been numerous methods developed for predicting the final subsidence and final displacement profiles (Voight and Pariseau, 1970; Brauner, 1973a; Kratzsch, 1983). But for discus- sion purposes, they can be classified into six categories: theoretical, profile function, influence function, graphical, physical, and numerical modeling. The theoretical method employs mainly continuum mechanics theories and attempts to explain the mechanisms that lead to sur- face subsidence. Many models using nearly all kinds of material behavior have been developed. These include elastic (Salmon, 1963; Berry, 1964), plastic (Pariseau, 1968), viscoelastic (Iman, 1965), and elastoplastic (Dahl, 1969). The Profile Function Method is essentially a method of curve-fitting against the measured subsidence profiles in a particular mine or region. There are more than 20 profile functions developed empirically for nearly all major coalfields in the world. These include, to name just a few representative ones: Hungary (Martos, 1958), Japan (Hiramatsu and Oka, 1968), Russia (Avershin, 1947), United Kingdom (Wardell, 1965), and USA (Peng and Chen, 1981; Karmis et al., 1984). The NCB's graphical method in the subsidence Engineers' Handbook (1975) also belongs to the profile function method. The influence function method was first proposed by Bals (1931/1932). It was further developed in various periods and stages by Knothe (1957), Liu and Liao (1965), Brauner (1973a) and Marr (1975). This method is now widely used in various parts of the world. The physical models include sand (Litwiniszyn, 1959; Pariseau and Dahl, 1968) and gelatin (King and Whetton, 1958; Khair et al., 1986). They are used mainly to study the parameters that control subsidence behavior. The most popular numerical method is the finite element technique. It can simulate nearly every conceivable material behavior, inhomogeneity, bedding planes, anisotropy, and various boundary conditions. This versatility is absolutely necessary considering the ever-changing geologic and mining conditions encountered. In the following sections, only those methods that have been applied to US coalfields will be discussed. Furthermore, the methods for prediction of several key parameters such as maximum subsidence, maximum possible subsidence, and maximum displacement are discussed first, because they are the key parameters to be used in the profile function, influence function, and graphical methods.

25.1-THE PURCHASING FUNCTION The word "purchase" means "to obtain by paying money or its equivalent; to buy for a price." This definition is all too simple to properly describe the word "purchase." One should consider the basic objectives of purchasing-to procure the right material, of the right quality, in the right quantity, at the right time, from the right source at the right price. Here it should be noted that in purchasing it is recognized that the best quality or grade of materials may be the only grade to purchase for a specific job. However. there are other jobs where the medium, standard or poor grade of materials is the right quality, as the lesser grade will perform adequately. In some companies the purchasing department makes the decision as to the right quality, while in others this function is shared with other departments. Years ago in business the owners controlled the purchase of required materials and services by performing the task themselves. The owners obtained the type materials and services they needed and paid the price demanded. This function was performed along with all the other duties requisite to the owner of a business, namely, clerical, hiring and firing of personnel, financial management, etc. As companies grew in size, clerical duties were assigned to other personnel and the owner usually retained the purchasing authority. This same division exists today in many small companies. However, in the larger companies, the purchasing function has been assigned to a separate department. Importance of the Purchasing Function-The larger the company the greater the need for a separate department to perform the purchasing function. Today the purchasing agent for most larger progressive companies has policy-making authority. Therefore, it is reasonable for him to report to the president or vice president of his company. Studies of several hundred companies show the purchasing department head reporting to top management 87.5% of the time. This fact in itself is indicative of the importance of recognizing that effective purchasing requires a department staffed with specialists in the field of procurement with knowledge and experience sufficient to perform in today's complicated business atmosphere. In the manufacturing field it is a common axiom that usually half of the company's dollar expenditures are for materials. If a purchasing department functions properly and the right product or service is purchased and a savings accomplished, the contribution to the net profit of the company is much greater, as opposed to sale dollars, where only a small portion is carried forward to net profit. Thus, the importance of the purchasing department and the contribution it can make to the success of the company are obvious. 25.1.1-THE PURCHASING FUNCTION 1. According to international projections and future energy scenarios, coal will continue to be a prominent fuel for the next 25 years. In fact, in many regions around the world, coal is expected to dominate the electricity sector until the year 2030. At the same time, with instability and volatility of oil prices, coal is also positioned as an alternative feed stock for conversion into liquid fuels. Energy economists maintain that coal liquefaction is viable at crude oil prices of $35 or more per barrel. Depending on technology and coal composition, 1 ton of coal can produce 1 to 4 barrels of oil. Increased coal production and the expanded utilization of coal also raise environmental concerns regarding greenhouse gases and the problem of handling CO2. Carbon sequestration research, currently conducted in many parts of the world, has demonstrated considerable potential for C-storage in unminable coal seams. Such geologic storage, when possible, can also be integrated into an enhanced coal bed methane recovery process Can coal fuel power plants and industrial facilities, provide diesel and other liquids and, at the same, also be used as a medium for permanently storing CO2? This presentation will provide a global perspective on these questions and stress on the need to reconsider, or even redefine, coal as the fuel for the future.

This project evaluated the performance of nine passive treatment methods by studying 137 treatment units in eight eastern states. Performance was normalized according to construction cost, projected service life and tons of acid load treated. Results were dimensioned as $/tons of acid load treated/year. These costs were then compared to those of chemical treatment. Sites that achieved acid load reductions at costs below those of chemical treatment were considered successful. In addition to evaluating the performance of the treatment methods, this paper describes the various passive treatment systems, their applications and performance data for individual treatment units.

The fluorspar deposits at Okorusu, Namibia are closely related to an alkaline igneous ring complex of late Cretaceous age (125±7 Ma). The fluorite ores consist of relatively fine-grained purple replacement fluorite and subsequent coarser grained purple and green vug-filling fluorite crystals. Homogenization temperature measurements for 38 primary fluid inclusions shows that main stage purple to green fluorite crystals were deposited over a temperature range from 166°C to 144°C, and minor late yellow fluorite was deposited at lower temperatures from 132°C to 128'C. Homogenization and freezing temperatures measured for 18 primary fluid inclusions shows that the fluorite-depositing fluids were less saline than MVT ore fluids and overlap the lower temperature range of fluids that deposited epithermal ore deposits. Mining in two open pits (A and B) at Okorusu has gradually provided exposures which reveal that the fluorite orebodies have been emplaced primarily by the preferential replacement of carbonatites. Evidence for the replacement of carbonatite includes: 1) replacement remnants of carbonatite within the fluorite ores, 2) goethite pseudomorphs after the carbonatite minerals, pyroxene, pyrrhotite, and magnetite that are disseminated in the fluorite ores, 3) partial replacement by fluorite of a titaniferous magnetite rimmed carbonatite dike in the A pit, and 4) partial replacement by fluorite of a large sill-like carbonatite body in the B pit. Electron microprobe analyses of minerals in unreplaced portions of the carbonatites show that their mineralogy consists of titaniferous magnetite, diopside pyroxene, apatite, biotite, and calcite. Magnetite contains 6.97% to 10.46% Ti02, averages 8.44% Ti02, and has an average V203 content of 0.35%. At high magnifications under the SEM, the magnetite shows abundant fine ulvöspinel exsolution lamellae arranged in a cloth texture. Apatite contains moderately high fluorine contents that range 3.21 to 5.0% and average 4.2%, and apatite crystals range in total rare earth oxides from 1.7% to 2.61%. Pyroxenes in the carbonatites are iron-rich diopside, and they contrast to pyroxenes in the fenites that are aegirine-augite. All of the microprobe analyses for mica crystals in the carbonatites give biotite compositions. The fluorite ores also have replaced marble locally in the A pit, especially along the A band in the B pit, and dominantly in the orebody proposed for the new C pit. Carbonatite and marble were preferentially replaced by fluorite because the calcite was readily soluble in the presence of the fluorite-depositing fluids and the dissolution of calcite provided calcium for the formation of fluorite.

Domestic bauxite used in aluminum production comes from Arkansas where syenite was lateritized forming bauxite. Part of the residual bauxite and kaolinized syenite were eroded, deposited downdip, lateritized with bauxite formed in place, and covered by sediments. The unconsolidated overburden causes problems in mining. Bauxite for refractories and chemicals comes from Alabama and Georgia. Sediments were deposited in karst lakes and were lateritized forming bauxite and kaolin. Ferruginous bauxite in Washington, Oregon and Hawaii, derived from weathered basalt, can be used in aluminum production.

Up to the middle of 19 14, when I had reached what seemed like the advanced age of 30, I had enjoyed far more than my share of success and a lot of minor adventure. But the exciting experiences in distant lands that Soldiers of Fortune had made me long for had not yet materialized. And I had not accomplished the two goals that Mrs. Hughes' geography class at Belmont had set up for me. They were to see In its tropical home the enormous yellow bill of the toucan bird and to ride on a straw "bolsa" on Lake Titicaca. These aims were gratified In the next five years that were the epitome of "romance" in its German connotation of facts seen through the rosy glasses of imagination. Dr. Louis Ricketts was to a large extent responsible for my opportunity. I had been lucky enough to do a lot of work for and with the Doctor, as he was affectionately called by the mining men of the southwest. My association was in connection with his work with John Greenway on the complex metallurgical problems at Ajo. Soon after the Ajo investigation Ricketts had been made chief consultant for the Anaconda Copper Co. When Anaconda decided to undertake a cam- paign of exploration of the west coast of South America Dr. Ricketts thought of me and arranged with Greenway to give me a leave of absence from my Calumet and Arizona job. It took three days in New York in June 1914 to arrange the expedition. Ben Thayer, executive vice president of Anaconda, did most of the planning and I was to report to him. T.H. France, a 45-year-old mining engineer who had been driven out of Mexico by the Madera Revolution, was to accompany and help me. He spoke excellent Spanish and his years of Mexican experience had taught him how to get along with Latin Americans. He went ahead to Bolivia, our first target, to get an idea of the country and the problems. This was lucky as I hardly knew where Bolivia was.

Shale gas wells drilled in longwall chain pillars are influenced by longwall mining. Longwall mining on each side of the chain pillars can create overburden movements and induce deformations in gas well casings. If the deformations result in a casing breach, intrusive shale gas could leak into the longwall mine with serious safety consequences. This study concerns five shale gas wells in the chain pillars between two adjacent longwall panels in the Pittsburgh coal seam under a cover depth of 670 ft and a mining height of 7 ft. The gas wells were constructed with typical casing design, but a casing cementing alternative with uncemented production casings was practiced. Four production casings were uncemented, and one production casing was unintentionally cemented with good quality cement to a 535-ft depth and low-quality cement stringers from a 444- to 535-ft depth. The longwall faces passed by the shale gas wells as each adjacent longwall panel retreated. Production casings were surveyed by a multi-finger caliper after each panel was mined. No deformation was detected in the four uncemented production casings, but small deformations were detected in the partially cemented production casing. The maximum measured deformation in the cemented production casing was 0.05 in. after first panel mining and 0.06 in. after second panel mining. The casing deformations were also predicted by the FLAC3D model set up on site-specific overburden geology. The predicted deformations were in good agreement with the measurements in terms of deformation locations and magnitudes. All five shale gas wells resumed normal production after being temporarily plugged during the period of mine-by. This study provides a successful demonstration of the effectiveness of a casing cementing alternative for decoupling production and intermediate casing, and thus minimizing the influence of longwall mining in the shale gas wells drilled through longwall chain pillars.

Modelling of industrial sulphide flotation based on data collected in several flotation plants is discussed. A mechanistic approach is used in which it is recognised that flotation is a two stage process with concentration occurring both in the pulp and in the froth. The important features of the model, which is a kinetic model, are – 1. for each particle species there is a range of flotation rates which corresponds to the range of particle sizes, 2. the flotation rates of the liberated gangue particles which have no hydrophobic properties are dependent on the flotation rate of water and are controlled by variables such as the air and frother addition rates, and the pulp level, 3. as an approximation the valuable sulphide particles may be regarded as being present in two groups with high and low flotation rate constants, 4. increase in the addition rate of collector tends to increase the proportion of sulphide particles which are in the high flotation rate constant group. The actual flotation rate of each group of particles is a combination of an "inherent" flotation rate and a flotation rate which is dependent on the flotation rate of water, at particular air and frother addition rates and pulp levels there is a physical limit to the rate at which particles can be transported into the concentrate and this is recognised in the

The effect of microwave treatment on the surface roughness and wettability of chalcopyrite (CuFeS2 ) and on the chemical composition of its surface was studied. The microwave source was a conventional multimodal oven with frequency of 2.45 GHz and maximum power of 900 W. Pure chalcopyrite specimens and purified chalcopyrite concentrate were used in this study. Analysis using atomic force microscopy showed a decrease in the surface roughness of the chalcopyrite after microwave radiation. This decrease may be due to oxidation of the surface and formation of iron oxide. Moreover, the surface wettability of the chalcopyrite mineral increased with increasing duration of microwave radiation, which was in good agreement with the micro-flotation mass recovery results. The increased wettability of the surface may be attributed to the decreased surface roughness by microwave radiation. Analysis using scanning electron microscope/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy indicate that after microwave radiation, the contents of sulfur and iron increased whereas that of copper decreased on the surface of the chalcopyrite, significantly changing the average atomic number of the chalcopyrite surface.

Public concern over possible degradation of groundwater resources has resulted in an array of Federal laws and corresponding state laws to regulate contaminates from solid and hazardous waste. A mine owner must be familiar with environmental regulations which could impact his operation and must know what precautions and corrective actions to take in order to protect his mining operation from potentially expensive remedial actions. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has issued few regulations controlling the management of mining wastes. Federal regulation of mining came primarily under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) administered by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM). Waste generated from the extraction, benefication and processing of ores and minerals was exempt from regulation under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), which is EPA's major instrument in controlling surface contaminates. On December 31, 1985, EPA submitted to Congress a report entitled "Wastes from the Extraction and Benefication of Metallic Ores, Phosphate Rock, Asbestos, Overburden from Uranium Mining and Oil Shale", which will be referred to, henceforth, as the Congressional Report. This Congressional Report assessed the possible adverse effects of mine associated wastes. This report is the first step toward developing regulations with which EPA can regulate waste from the extraction, benefication and process of mineral ores.

In 1985 the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) conducted a study to evaluate the emerging selective agglomeration processes (Killmeyer, 1985). This paper covers a recent similar study evaluating an associated technology, the emerging advanced froth flotation processes. This study has goals similar to those of the 1985 study: to evaluate the emerging froth flotation technologies collectively and determine how far they have progressed in their ability to clean ultrafine coal, and to assess the differences among the participants. The major concern again in this study was not the level of development, nor the economics of each individual process but only the current technical performance.

"Tunneling through an urban environment carries many inherent risks to the immediate local infrastructure and subsequently to the project stakeholders. On the CQ031 Contract of the East Side Access Project in Queens, New York, twin 22.5’ diameter Herrenknecht Slurry TBMs were mined within close proximity to many infrastructure assets, with cover of less than half a shield diameter at times. Multiple public bridges and critical railroad infrastructure including catenary poles and signal towers supporting the busiest rail interlocking in the United States required underpinning systems. The support program for these structures was refined over the course of the four tunnel drives. It is the intent of this paper to show how the interaction between the temporary structures, instrumentation monitoring plan, and risk assessment program melded to provide a system which the owner, contractor, and designer relied on as a tool to ensure the project success without impacting the public surroundings. PROJECT BACKGROUND The East Side Access (ESA) megaproject located in New York City, N.Y is a multi billion dollar program for the Metropolitan Transit Authority Capital Construction (MTACC) with the main goal of bringing the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) commuter rail to Grand Central Station located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. When completed, the project will significantly reduce congestion both into and out of Penn Station, the current terminus of the LIRR. In order to accomplish this, multiple contracts of varying scope are required to operate simultaneously in both Queens, N.Y and Manhattan. In 2009, the CQ031 Queens Bored Tunnels Contract was awarded to the joint venture of Granite Construction Northeast, Traylor Bros. Inc., and Frontier Kemper (G.T.F). The main scope of this contract was to excavate four segmentally lined soft ground tunnels underneath the Sunnyside Rail Yard in Queens, New York. Additional scope of work included the construction of a tunnel approach structure, electrical substation, and multipurpose ventilation and egress facility."

INTRODUCTION Resin bolting systems continue to gain popularity in underground coal mines in the United States, and their general success under a wide range of geological and operational conditions is well documented. In 1984, 36% of all bolts used were resin-grouted systems. However, many questions dealing with basic support mechanisms and the influence of various factors on bolt effectiveness in situ remain only partially answered. The Bureau of Mines' Denver Research Center conducted a major research project to investigate the influence of installation procedures on the effectiveness of resin-grouted roof bolts. The project consisted of two main studies: the first dealing with the contribution of bearing plates to the load-carrying capability of the bolt; the second examining the relationship between installed grout column and the anchorage capacity as measured by the standard pull-out test. Additionally, a finite-element computer model and other analytical and empirical techniques were applied to aid in the basic understanding of the test procedures and to examine the load transfer mechanism in resin-grouted bolts, which to date has not been comprehensively assessed. The plate study includes field test results from two mines (Fig. 1). At these test sites two behavioral parameters were measured: the actual loads that bearing plates were subjected to when installed in conjunction with full-column resin grouted bolts, and the roof movements generated by the applied loads. Results indicate that bearing plates are subjected to varying degrees of loading, which range from conventional installation pressures of 2.2 kN (500 lb), up to a measured load of 142.4 kN (32,000 lb) when the immediate roof is shifting and deforming. These measured loads indicate that the bearing plate is an integral part of the support system. Differential sag stations, installed to monitor roof displacements in the test sites, show the highest degrees of loading occur in conjunction with the largest amounts of movement. The column-length study addresses possible reductions in anchorage capacity of "full column" bolts. These reductions could result from such factors as the loss of grout to surrounding strata, or improper mixing of catalyst and resin.
