INTRODUCTION The Columbia River Basalt beneath the Hanford Site is one of several rock types being considered by the U.S. Department of Energy for the first commercial high-level nuclear waste repository. The Basalt Waste Isolation Project (BWIP) has been carrying out a comprehensive investigation to assess the feasibility of constructing a repository in basalt and to develop technology required for repository engineering and site characterization. Development of a nuclear waste repository requires a number of design considerations not usually necessary in the planning of conventional underground structures. Principal among these is the thermally induced stress field resulting from waste emplacement. This thermal stress, super- imposed on the preexisting in situ- and excavation- induced stress fields, needs to be evaluated in the design process due to the sensitivity of waste emplacement density to this factor. The nature of this thermally induced stress field is dependent on several factors, including the temperature distribution around the repository openings, the thermal properties of the rock mass, and the deformability of the rock mass. Re1iable performance of the repository structure is largely determined by the ability to under- stand the above rock mass characteristics and predict the underground opening response to waste emplacement based on this understanding. To gain an understanding of this rock mass behavior in a repository condition, the BWIP has conducted a large-scale heated block test in basalt at the Near-Surf ace Test Facility (NSTF) on the Hanford Site. This paper presents the results from the elevated temperature phase of the block test in which the thermal, mechanical, and thermo- mechanical response of the closely jointed basalt rock mass was evaluated as a function of stress and loading orientation at varying temperatures up to 200 oC. SITE GEOLOGY The NSTF test areas, including the block test site, are located in the entablature zone of the Pomona basalt f low. The Pomona flow entablature is structurally typical of most flows in the Columbia River Basalt Group in that it is characterized by long, undulating, polygonal columns up to 2.4 m in length. Columns vary from 15 to 30 cm in diameter, averaging about 20 cm. Over their length, columns can vary in dip by 150 to 200. The column structures are dissected by subhorizontal cross joints that are generally discontinuous and seldom cross columnar joint boundaries. Spacing of the cross joints also averages about 20 cm. A representative joint pattern taken from mapping of the tunnel wall near the block test site is shown in figure 1. Application of the Rock Mass Rating System (Bieniawski, l979) to the block test site yielded an overall value of 62. The corresponding value from application of the Q-system (Barton et al., 1974) is 8.7 (Cramer and Kim,1985). The NSTF is approximately 50 m below the surf ace. However, this depth is sti1l above the water table and conditions are generally dry. Interstitial water exists as the result of percolation of meteoric water from the surface.

The island of Jamaica consists predominantly of Carbonate rocks which vary in chemical & physical characteristics. Currently these rocks are used for construction and road aggregate, landfill and as a raw material in the manufacture of cement. Over the past fifteen years the Geological Survey of Jamaica with assistance from a number of international aid agencies and the private sector have identified deposits of high calcium/high brightness limestones which have the potential to be utilized as a high quality filler and a number of other commercial applications. Geologically, these limestones are formed within the Eocene Swanswick Formation, the Oligocene Walderston-Browns Town Formation and to a lesser extent the Miocene Montpelier and Newport Formations.

Historically, the treatment of orebodies for recovery of valuable constituents presents many processing challenges. In a time of heightened environmental awareness, the constraints placed on processing complex orebodies are becoming more and more pronounced. As such, established technologies are limited in their ability to fill the needs of these emerging sources of raw materials. A prime example of this is in processing PGMs from primary sources. Normally, this type of material is found in a nickel-copper-iron sulfide matrix. Typically, these materials are processed by established pyrometallurgical means. However, other options should be considered. Hydrometallurgical processes are available which offer advantages over pyrometallurgical methods. One of these is the nitrogen species catalyzed sulfuric acid pressure leach used industrially by Sunshine Mining and Refining Company. In 1990, laboratory work was undertaken in cooperation with Stillwater Mining Company to test PGM matte materials from the Columbus, Montana smelter. The initial results were very positive, and they led to a design to recover PGMs in a high grade residue and to recover nickel and copper as valuable products. Handling the iron and other wastes in an environmentally safe manner was also successfully investigated.

The extended weakness of dollar-denominated commodity prices during the past four years has often been attributed to, among other factors, the strong rise in the value of the dollar, and many U. S. producers have hoped for a recovery in metals and minerals prices once the dollar weakened in foreign exchange markets. The recent turnaround in dollar strength may put this view to the test quite soon. Hence a review of the role of exchange rate changes in the determination of the prices of world-traded metals and minerals may be timely. This paper has three parts. Part I reviews the recent summary record of price movements in commodity and foreign exchange markets. Part 11 reviews the distinct ways in which exchange rate changes influence the supply and demand sides of a representative commodity market. Part III then more closely examines copper and aluminum prices to highlight the potential differences in the effects of exchange rate changes for commodities whose production is dominated by geology and commodities which are processing-dominated. The paper also contemplates the likely implications of these differences for commodity prices in the case of a decline in the trade-weighted dollar. The evidence suggests that the degree of recovery for dollar- measured commodity prices may be very different for differing goods. And it may be the case that some commodities whose prices appear to have been most affected by exchange rate influences may show the least recovery in response to a fall in the trade- weighted dollar.

A statistical model for assessing the risk of ground subsidence in abandoned mine areas is presented. The model is based on the relationship that exists between .the frequency and the location-of subsidence events in a given area and the physical conditions of the ground. These conditions can be described by a series of geological, mining, and physical variables. The model suggests the existence of regions in the multidimensional space of variables which are associated .with increases or decreases in the frequency of subsidence events. Regions associated with an increase in the frequency of subsidence events correspond to regions of higher risks, and vice versa. Risk assessment is based on the ability to express the limits of these high and low risk regions in the, space of variables, and on the ability to express the degree of membership of blocks of land within any of these regions. The theoretical framework for the model is extracted, from discriminant analysis. Risk is quantified by the probabilities of membership of blocks of land into any of these regions. Risk maps are produced by displaying membership probabilities in. appropriate contouring levels. The model has been applied in two urban areas where subsidence of the ground has been active in the past. The two areas are Penn Hills, near Pittsburgh, and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in northeastern Pennsylvania. In this paper, only the results for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area are presented. Those for the Penn Hills area have been presented elsewhere (Cervantes, et al, 1990). In the- Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area, geostatistical estimates of variables likely to affect the stability of the ground were made using samples from 53 drillholes. The estimates were made for 2000x2000 ft squared blocks of land covering the study area. Discriminant functions were computed from the estimated variables and used to establish regions for classifying blocks of land into one of these two populations: 1) blocks not likely to have a subsidence event, and ii) blocks likely to have one or more subsidence events. The same, discriminant functions were used to compute membership probabilities for blocks of land to tall within any of these two populations. These probabilities were contoured to produce a risk map. The risk map produced compares well with the location of the subsidence events which have occurred to date in the area.

Rigid urethane foam can be used effectively for improving mine air conditioning systems by reducing heat and moisture transfer from mine rock to ventilating air and from mine rock to ventilation ducts, for erecting mine ventilation stoppings and overcasts, for sealings around door frames and bulkheads to prevent air leakage, for preventing spalling and sloughing of roof and rib and for erecting fire-resistant powder magazines and transformer or compression stations. Rigid urethane foam is a tough, cellular material, made by nixing diisocyanate and polyether polyol resin in accurate proportions through an applicator system, then the two chemicals react, the mixture expands thirty times its original volume with 85 to 95 percent closed cells. Within seconds, the mixture solidifies and takes a preset which will adhere to overhead or vertical surfaces. It will adhere to brattice cloth, steel, wood, concrete and rock, Excessive wetness will reduce the adherence, but in such cases adherence can be improved by preliminary application of an absorbent dust such as cement.

INTRODUCTION The estimation of ore reserves is a process that begins with the earliest exploration stages on a property and continues throughout any subsequent evaluation and exploitation of the deposit. During exploration and preliminary evaluation, the results of these reserve estimates constitute the basic data for prefeasibility studies and economic analysis. The decision to continue exploration and development or to abandon a prospect is often based upon these studies. During the active life of a mine, reserve computations are continuously revised to assist in development planning, cost and efficiency analyses, quality control, and improvement of extraction and processing methods. Accurate reserve estimates are also required when financing a project, purchasing or selling a property, and for accounting purposes such as depletion and tax calculation. It is important to remember that the reliability of ore reserve estimates varies progressively through time as more and more information becomes available. The lowest order of reliability of estimation of reserves exists at the time of discovery. The maximum level of certainty concerning the ore reserves within a deposit is reached when the deposit is completely mined out. Between these two extremes are variable levels of certainty as to the tonnage and grade of the resource. This is particularly true of that portion of the mineral resource that constitutes the "minable reserve," as this portion is dependent upon economic as well as geological and technological factors. In the following discussion, several of the factors affecting ore reserve computation and some of the commonly used methods of calculation are presented. The first part of the discussion is confined to classical methods of hand calculation utilizing level maps and sections. The second part of the discussion presents an overview of somewhat more sophisticated methods of geostatistics which have been developed within recent Years. Geostatistical methods frequently provide the best ore re- serve estimates for many deposits. However, a digital computer is required for such geostatistically derived estimates due to the number and complexity of the cornputations involved. For many properties the classical nongeostatistical methods are adequate, particularly in the early exploration stages. In fact, it is the author's contention that even at those properties where the geostatistical approach is employed for reserve estimation, the geological and engineering staffs should prepare an estimate by traditional means. This provides an internal audit for the reserves and at the same time requires a continuing close appraisal of geologic problems that influence the presently known geostatistically estimated reserves and production at the mine.

Zirconium chloride is of great commercial importance as starting materials for production of ZrO2, Zirconium metal and other Zirconium compounds from its main resources (Zircon Sands). The present study concerns with preparation of pure ZrO2 from Zircon by direct chlorination technique. Different parameters affecting the chlorination process are studied viz. carbon, chlorine flow rate temperature and time. The chlorination extent is determined from the loss in weight and chemical analysis of reaction products. The maximum chlorination extent -92% are achieved at 1100°C for 30 min. Zirconium oxide is produced from the collected zirconium tetrachloride either by calcination at 900°C or by hydrolysis in water in presence of RCI with a purity = 99%. Evaluations of the products of the process are investigated microscopically and by X-ray diffraction. The apparent activation energy of the chlorination of Zircon is determined to equal 36 kJ/mole.

Spatial and temporal temperature and humidity variations for 5000 years are simulated in an emplacement airway within the conceptual, high-level nuclear waste repository proposed to be built at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. A multi-scale model is configured using MULTIFLUX, a thermohydrologic-ventilation code. The predicted surface temperature of most waste packages during post-closure exceed 140oC, the threshold limit known for likely localized corrosion for Alloy 22 waste package material. Small amounts of infiltration airflow through the mountain in Panel 5 are found to transport liquid water condensate to some of the waste packages emplaced along the peripheral section of the drift due to edge cooling.

The most common method used for cleaning the fine fraction in today's coal preparation plants is froth flotation. Past research and practice has found that froth flotation achieves excellent separation efficiencies for fine coals having only a small fraction of middling particles. However, its efficiency decreases sharply as the concentration of middling particles increases due to the flotation of high-ash particles having a small amount of hydrophobic coal present at the coal surface. Since gravity-based processes are much more efficient at treating middlings, the application of centrifugal washing for fine coal cleaning has been studied with an emphasis on the primary cleaning of fine circuit feed. Results will be shown from a parametric study using a Falcon centrifugal concentrator which reveals that the separation performance is a function of particle size, bowl geometry, feed solids content, and feed rate.

This is a description of the efforts of a research project intended to demonstrate methods of alleviating pollution from coal mine refuse piles and slurry lagoons. These are mainly derelict barren sites. Some are burning and some are vulnerable to wind erosion which causes air pollution. Some occupy valuable land near metropolitan areas. They are an integral part of the landscape of the Appalachian and Midwestern Coal Fields. They are important in the light of growing civic awareness of the great general problem of waste disposal and environmental improvement. In the V-shaped valleys of the Pocahontas Region, they continue to be piled higher and higher. In flatter topography, they tend to form broad, flat ridges. Some contain more metal forms than others and some have a minimum of metal, but weather to a fine talc, which chokes streams with a fine particle suspension. Most are burning or have burned, but burning or weathering, most all are sources of pollution to the atmosphere and to adjacent waterways. This demonstration project is being carried out at an abandoned mine near the town of Du Quoin in southern Illinois. It is jointly sponsored by the Truax-Traer Division of Consolidation Coal Company and by the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration of the Department of the Interior. The site area is a refuse pile and slurry lagoon, each of fifty acres. It is hoped that basic data from this study will be generally applicable to other sites and will provide a basis for rational and efficient engineering design of future reclamation projects. Most refuse piles have extremely long term capabilities to produce highly potent acidogenic oxidation products typifying the more serious aspects of acid mine drainage contamination. Numerous sites remain where the abandoned mine no longer discharges acid waters, but its associated refuse pile continues to generate significant quantities of acid and other oxidation products even after many years.

"In this paper, the most significant environmental aspects that are identified in the Taft Copper Project (TCP) are the quality and quantity of water, pollution of the existing watercourses and post-mining land use, matters such as air and noise pollution are deemed to be of less significance. Analysis has been performed for Do Nothing Alternative, Pre-stripping Phase, Mining Phase, Closure and After-use Phases. Analysis of the environmental assessment of TCP was carried out in three stages. In the first stage, the general negative and positive aspects of the project were identified. In the second stage the intensity, magnitude and significance of the environmental impacts of the project were identified. The third stage is related to the final conclusions of the assessment team and the relevant reasoning. A modified Leopold Matrix was adopted for evaluating the significance and magnitude of the environmental impacts. For this project, the matrix was modified to allow the assessor to take account of negative and positive numbers."

Gold, as a precious metal, has been sought for several thousand years. During this time economics have generally determined whether or not a deposit is minable. Today, few would spend $500.00 or $1,000.00 to produce one ounce of gold, yet most gold deposits currently being mined would have such costs if they were mined using the methods of the 18th century. Innovation has been the key to success in the world of mining. We are constantly having to look for new ways to mine deposits of lower grade, at greater depths, or with higher stripping ratios. The mining of placer gold deposits has always been subject to the volatile swings of the world price and the constant rise in production costs. The rise in costs is compounded by the drop in overall ore grades. Occasionally, a major technological innovation will dramatically reduce the costs of placer mining to allow previously marginal or unminable deposits to be mined at a profit. The continuous bucketline dredge was the last such major innovation in the gold placer mining. The continuous bucketline dredge has allowed large volumes of placer deposits to be picked up and processed on a continuous basis. Unfortunately, as the overall grade of the deposit declines, it becomes impossible to process enough ore to pay for the operating costs. There are many gold deposits around the world waiting for the next technological innovation that will allow them to be mined. One such deposit has been the Grey River deposit near Greymouth in New Zealand. The basic reason for lining underground cavities is to keep the cavity open during its useful life by providing adequately for the support of the surrounding rock and for the necessary degree of water tightness. This covers the entire field of support methods from the simpliest timber support to reinforced concrete in all its variations as applied to tunnels, galleries or shafts. The problem involved in the design of more efficient and economical lining systems for even bigger cavities has been magnified by increased speed of advance made possible by better blasting tecniques, improved tunneling machines and more efficient material handling. Tunnel lining today requires a disproportionate amount of time and money compared to other operations mostly due to the manuel labor involved in its installation. One solution to this problem is the developement of an entirely new concept in tunnel lining designed notoonly to overcome this bottleneck but also to open up the field for further increases in speed of advance. This new lining system acts first as a fast protective armour then becomes the concrete metal form and ends up as reinforcement sheet inside the concrete lining. This system developed and manufactured by Bernold A. G. of Switzerland since October 1968 has been installed in 25 applications in Europe under all ground conditions from stable rock to unconsolidated ground.

Introduction Recognition of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) as a major occupational disease has affected various aspects of the coal mining industry in the United States as well as in almost all major coal producing countries. Regulations related to the control of coal mine dust forced mine operators to modify their mining and ventilation practices. As the coal production record of the last 15 years shows, this had both direct and indirect impacts on the productivity and production costs. To identify the causes of CWP, many research efforts have been made through- out the world. Most of these studies were epidemiological in nature, attempting to pinpoint exposure and seam variables that affected the incidence of the disease. Other studies have been oriented toward the elemental and mineralogical composition of the coal dust in the mine atmosphere and in the miners' lungs. These studies indicate that there may exist some relationships between the characteristics of the coal mine dust and the prevalence of the disease. Some of the variables that are thought to affect the occurrence of CWP are the mass of the dust in the working place, the rank of the coal, the existence of certain trace elements, the free silica content of the coal, and the existence of other minerals in the respirable dust. A more complete description of these previous re- search studies has appeared elsewhere (Mutmansky and Lee, 1984). The behavior of particles in the human lung is known to be governed by their aerodynamic diameter, which is defined as the diameter of a hypothetical spherical particle with unit density that exhibits the same settling velocity as the given particle. Because of this fact, the aerodynamic size distribution of coal mine dust is one of the parameters to be determined along with the other physical, elemental, and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this paper is to establish a strategy for providing coal mine respirable dust samples for characterization purposes using instruments that classify according to the aerodynamic diameter. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Shortwall mining is one of the newest mining meth¬ods to be introduced into the world coal industry. The technique of shortwalling seems to have a number of origins, but it is generally agreed that it is an outgrowth of pillar-and-stall mining where timbering was employed as the primary means of roof support. In early opera¬tions the face was undercut by a shortwall cutter, hand¬bored, and blasted. The coal was loaded by hand or gathering arm loader. Australia, having experienced success with this method, advanced the technique through the use of mechanized roof supports in 1968. Although there were several attempts at shortwalling in the US, it was not until 1973 that Eastern Associated Coal Corp.'s Federal No. 1 mine successfully extracted a shortwall panel. Table 1 is a list of shortwall opera¬tions in the US as of April 1976. Shortwall mining is a method of mining in which a continuous miner cuts and loads from the short end of a rectangular pillar of coal while hydraulically powered self-advancing roof supports provide protective cover. Characteristics of a shortwall system include panel di¬mensions (Fig. 1) of 610 to 1219 m (2000 to 4000 ft) in length, face widths of 30 to 61 m (100 to 200 ft), straight-line ventilation, and production machinery, with the exception of roof supports, commonly used on con¬tinuous miner units. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS The justification for shortwalling is primarily eco¬nomic, i.e., increased production and recovery concur¬rent with savings in material and labor. The method also has a number of secondary benefits including the much needed progress it has stimulated in deep mine technology, the alternatives it presents to some of the problems resulting from the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, and is perhaps a key to the solution of the enigmatic labor problems which plague the industry. The advantages of shortwall mining over continuous miner units include the following: a highly effective method of ventilation and dust control; a greater per¬centage of extraction (approximately 85%) ; fewer equipment moves, hence more efficient operating time; cost savings on materials such as roof bolts, rock dust, ventilation curtains, timbering materials, and the labor needed to supply, load, and transport these materials; a cyclical pattern of mining, each phase of which, i.e., development and retreat, lasts for approximately three months and appears to be psychologically motivating as well as highly productive; and improved safety. In addition to these positive aspects, a shortwall sys¬tem also has advantages over a longwall system, and these are listed as follows: the capital outlay for a shortwall system is one-third to one-fourth that for a longwall (1976 prices); the shortwall system utilizes equipment that is used on a continuous miner section, with the ex¬ception of the roof support system; there is a great deal of flexibility in areas with numerous gas wells and in areas where surface subsidence cannot be tolerated; the shortwall has reduced tailgate problems, since the tail¬gate entry serves as a return airway only; and the cyclical pattern of mining insures that the mining machinery pro¬duces coal even while the roof support system is being moved to another panel. There are several parameters which govern the se¬lection and use of a shortwall system. They are all of equal importance, and hence are not listed in any par¬ticular order. These are deposit size, seam height, seam inclination, roof and floor conditions, depth of over¬burden, subsidence and chain pillar extraction, man¬power, ventilation, and materials handling. Deposit Size Reserves available for shortwalling should be suffi¬cient for at least an eight to ten-year period, since this seems to be the effective life, without rebuilding, of a hydraulic roof support under average conditions. Introduction Electrostatic separation is the selective sorting of solid species by means of utilizing forces acting on charged or polarized bodies under the influence of an electric field. Electrostatic separation is effected by adjusting those forces acting on particles due to the electric field as well as co-acting forces such as gravity or centrifugal forces so that the different species will have different trajectories at some predetermined time. Electrostatic separations can be broadly defined as being either electrophoretic or dielectrophoretic. Electrophoresis is the separation of charged particles in an electric field, whereas dielectrophoresis is the separation of neutral particles in an electric field1. Examples of an electrophoretic separation can be found with sepa¬rations that use corona charging (ion bombardment), contact charging (triboelectric) and conductive induction. Dielectrophoresis motions are due to the stress and repositioning of charges, i.e. polarization of a neutral particle when exposed to a non-uniform electric field. Separations made using corona discharge devices are often called high-tension, electrodynamic or ion bombardment separations. These are the most prevalent in use today in mineral processing. Dielectrophoretic separation of most minerals is based on differences in dielectric constants of the solid species and usually requires the use of expensive intermediate dielectric fluids. Dielectrophoresis has not been employed for industrial mineral separations, though its effects pose interesting possibilities1, and pilot-plant units developed by the U.S.B.M. are available for testing2. Our discussion will be limited to the three forms of electrophoresis found in commercial practice. Typical Industrial Separations Typical industrial applications of electrostatic separation are: 1. Dry concentration of heavy minerals: ilmenite, rutile, zircon, monazite, xenotime, columbite-tantalite, cassiterite, hematite, scheelite and others. 2. Separation of salts: halite-sylvite, etc. 3. New technology for removal of nitrate from low-temperature waters has been developed. Typical results from the first operational-scale system (operating at a metal mine in Montana since January 1996) are over 90 percent nitrate removal at a flow rate of 130 gpm and a water temperature of 12°C. The system also operated successfully at flow rates as high as 300 gpm and water temperatures as low as 2°C. The ABC is advantageous because it is: a) cost-effective to design, construct and operate, and b) effective at cold water temperatures. The system can be designed for a variety of flows, nitrate concentrations, water temperatures and water qualities.

ABSTRACT The presence of gold in lateritic crusts over mafic and ultramafic volcanogenic complexes in / and greenstohe belts, has called the attention in several parts of Brazil and also in Australia. Recent studies reveal the variety of structures and mineralogy of such crusts, and their importance in correlation with host(bed) rock types, as exploration guides, specially for greenstone belt metallogeny. The expected nature of growth of plates and/or nuggets in such crusts is under detailed study, and is considered as possibly due to dissolution and reprecipitation phenomenae of disseminated-fine-low grade ore in the host rock, in this investigation, laterite geochemistry, though incipiently discussed todate, is of fundamental importance and significance. Lateritic gold can be classified texturally as: dusty and diffused, fine, thin platy, taDular, and nuggets. Such gold is pure, and is often restricted to nodular (pisoliths, ooliths, concretions) forms or the matrix, that constitute the crusts or lateritised gravel beds which have an essentially goetnitic nature. Further this gold is recovered directly by mining the crusts or the adjoining placers with the metal derived from them. The thickness and extension of laterite crust zones is extremely variable depending oh the paleoclimatic conditions, and is conditioned to the favourable lithology and its structural expression. However, the "growth" of gold in these laterites will be conductive , without doubt, to several small scale mining activities, specially in the developing countries and regions limited to latitudes 309N and 309S.

INTRODUCTION Boom-type miners mechanize the cutting and loading of a solid face of rock having a compressive strength as high as 124 MPa (18,000 psi). These machines differ from continuous miners in that they can cut much harder rock for any given cutter-motor power. In addi¬tion, a boom miner is more flexible, selectively cutting any cross-sectional configuration from circular to square arched faces, 1.57-rad (90°) turns, and mixed faces. The basic operational concept of these machines, utilizing a rotary cutterhead mounted on a slewing boom, gained importance in Europe during the 1960s, where, due to their specialized use in roadway development in coal mines, they were called roadheaders. Along with continuous miners, boom miners share the ability to fully mechanize the cutting and loading of rock, while eliminating the need for explosives and the shattering and overbreaking of roof and rib rock that is normal with conventional mining methods. The machines are crawler-mounted and most have a gathering-arm load¬ing system that, moves the cut rock onto an internal chain conveyor, subsequently discharging the rock into a transport device such as a shuttle car or a bridge conveyor. Light- to medium-weight boom miners are cutting softer rocks and minerals successfully, including coal, shale, rock salt, potash, phosphate, weak sandstones (e.g., those associated with uranium ore), and other softer ores such as iron. Heavy third-generation ma¬chines have extended rock cutting to much harder ores such as borate, oil shale, and almost all rock associated with coal seams, except for the harder sandstones and limestones. TYPES OF BOOM MINERS All boom miners utilize drag bits fixed on a rotary cutterhead that is powered by an electric motor mounted in the slewing and elevating cutter boom. The cutter¬head is either a ripping or a milling type, and the machines have evolved through three generations (Boldt, 1977). As shown in Fig. 1, only one boom miner cur¬rently produced can use both ripping and milling cutter¬heads on one machine. Table 1 lists boom-miner models built in large num¬bers and/or successfully used or marketed in North America. Table I excludes machines of which only a few have been produced and none sold in North America, such as those manufactured by Demag, Eick¬hoff, Paurat, and Thyssen-Rheinstahl. The only Ameri¬can boom miners are the F-16 and Super ROC¬MINER"', manufactured by AEC, Inc., State College, PA. Machine Generations Three generations of boom miners can be distin¬guished according to their times of introduction, their rock-cutting abilities, and their weight classifications. Fig. 2 illustrates typical best-practice production rates possible from boom miners for selected cutter-motor power sizes (other power figures can be interpolated).
