In this study, numerical simulations of yield pillars employing the finite-element method with a time-dependent Drucker-Prager material model are conducted. The stress¬control mechanism of yield pillars on weak floor strata is studied. The development of a pillar yield zone, the distribution of pillar stress and the development of a failure zone in the weak floor strata are investigated. The study indicates that a properly selected yield pillar size may significantly reduce the peak stress induced in the weak floor strata and may effectively control the development of a failure zone in the floor.

Using neural networks for plant control is challenging. The objective was to show how to make a neural network effective, even with noise, lag times, and unmeasured disturbances in the plant. The procedure was to evaluate the neural network in a laboratory flotation vision system and in a plant refractory gold autoclave system. Although the resulting neural network easily conquered simple laboratory data, the noisy plant data was much more difficult, and adaptive linear models were equally effective. We concluded that the neural network needs support by combining it with other tools found in the best control packages.

Gold extractions from three refractory sulphide concentrates have been increased by bacterial oxidation with T. ferrooxidans prior to cyanide leaching. Arsenopyrite, pyrite and stibnite were the major sulphide components associated with gold in the concentrates examined. Kinetic oxidation tests were conducted for each concentrate by monitoring iron and arsenic levels in leach slurry. A correlation has been established between the level of bacterial oxidation and gold extraction from cyanide leaching of oxidised residues. High levels of bacterial oxidation have been achieved in approximately 8 days at pulp densities of 20-25/ w/v solids, resulting in 70-90% gold extraction.

The Stillwater pt-pd mine and flotation mill are located about 130 km (80 miles) southwest of Billings in Stillwater county, M6ntana~ The pt-pd ore zone stretches about 43 km (27 miles), but varies in thickness from 0 to 6 meters (0 to 20 feet, but generally 3-6 feet) and dips 55-90,degrees from horizontal. The ore is hosted in basic, layered igneous rocks containing about 1% sulfide minerals which include chalcopyrite, pentlandite, pyrrhotite, and minor pyrite. The pt-Pd minerals are intimately associated with these sulfide minerals and are found as precious metal sulfides, tellurides, bismuthnides, and arsenides as well as native Pt metal. Approximately 90 different precious metal minerals have been found, but about 80% of the pd is in solid solution in the pentlandite. The ore assays about 0.1% Cu, 0.1% Ni, 6.2 g Pt/tonne (0.18 Troy ounce Pt/short ton (opt)), 21.3 g Pd/tonne (0.62 opt Pd), 0.21 g Au/tonne (0.006 opt Au), and 0.21 g Rh/tonne (0.006 opt Rh). The ratio of pd to Pt in the Stillwater ore and concentrates is about 3.5.

Heap biooxidation of sulfidic refractory gold ore requires large amounts of oxygen, as shown in Figure 1. Bacteria, Thiobaci/lus ferrooxidans, are donnant at oxygen concentrations below about 3% in air (1 ppm in aqueous solution) because ofmonod kinet­ics. Hence, the maximum possible utilization is only about 75%, and it may be much less than that due to poor air sweep effi­ciency. At the maximum oxygen utilization, an ore containing two percent pyrite requires nearly 100 cubic meters of air per tonne (4,000 cubic feet per ton). The stoichiometric air require­ment to oxidize arsenopyrite is similar to that of pyrite. While the leaching solution percolating through the heap introduces some dissolved oxygen, the amount is insignificant because of the low solubility of oxygen in water, 7 to 8 ppm at atmospheric saturation. There are only three ways to provide oxygen to the heap: either air flow by natural convection, diffusion of oxygen from the surface (through stagnant air in the air-filled void space in the heap), or forced air ventilation of the heap. Each of these processes will be reviewed.

Nitric acid has long been known as an effective oxidant. Nitric acid leaching is characterised by highly favourable kinetics. Process development was impeded due to the corrosive nature of the process, limited knowledge of acid recycle and complex reactions which are still not fully understood. In 1981, Arseno Processing Ltd (APL), began development of the so-called Arseno process. The technology targeted nitric acid oxidation of refractory gold ores and concentrates whose refractoriness was due to the presence of sulphide minerals. APL lodged patents in United States, Australia, Canada and several other countries covering the basic chemistry, the overall process, and reactor design. The name Arseno led to the misunderstanding that the process was only applicable to arsenic-bearing material. The name was therefore changed to the Redox process in 1988. Having played an important role in the development of Redox from 1986, SASOX recognised the great potential of the process and purchased the process in 1990. SASOX owns all the patents and other Redox proprietary know-how, licensing agreements in force, and is committed to the ongoing development and commercialisation of the Redox technology. Minproc has been granted specific marketing and engineering rights to the Redox pro_cess.

Tailings and/or wastewater generated from gold extraction plants employing cyanida­ tion must often be treated to remove the cyanides and heavy metals for environmental reasons and/or gold extraction inhibition reasons, due to the presence of heavy metals like copper, which have a detrimen­ tal effect during cyanidation. In recent years, the treatment of effluents contain­ ing cyanides and heavy metals has been widely studied, Among chemical treatment methods, the use of hydrogen peroxide has been universally employed as a viable option. However, in some cases, effluents containing high concentrations of heavy metals and/or solids decompose the hydrogen peroxide, an undesirable side reaction. The addition of stabilizers or other peroxygen compounds together with hydrogen peroxide can, however, considerably reduce the rate of decomposition and thus result in detoxi­ fication costs, which are considerably less than the standard detoxification process using hydrogen peroxide. In some cases, the reaction rate can also be increased, resul­ ting in lower investment costs for new detoxification plants. This paper deals with the results of developmental work performed in the recent past and introduces some new processes with the aim of optimizing reagent consumption and costs.

A novel solvent-extraction route for the production of high­purity gold has been successfully demonstrated on a pilot-plant scale, and the first full-scale production plant is being commissioned. This plant, at Harmony Gold Mine in South Africa, is designed to refine 24 tons of gold per annum when operated for one shift per day. The commercial implementation of this process represents not only a significant advance in gold­refining technology, but may also be instrumental in initiating important changes in the legislation regulating the marketing of gold in South Africa. The Minataur™ Process (Mintek Alternative Technology for Au Refining) is able to produce gold of either 99.99% or 99.999% purity from intermediate process products having a wide range of gold contents. The process comprises oxidative leaching of the feed material, followed by selective solvent extraction of the gold from the leach liquor to reject impurities, and then precipitation of high-purity gold powder. This paper introduces the process, presents selected results of pilot-plant trials in which high-purity gold was produced from two significantly different feed materials, and illustrates some of the applicable cost benefits.

Low world gold prices stimulate development and introduction of economically efficient ( cost saving) technology for operating gold mills. This report covers the results of testing and introduction of CIL technology to recover gold from flotation concentrate of Samarta gold concentration plant located in Buryatia (Russia). This plant is treated the ore of Zun Kholba gold deposit using gravity and flotation of gravity tails as preconcentration processes. Till recently high grade gold gravity concentrate was smelted to gold bullion and shipped to gold refinery, gravity middlings were leached by cyanidation in cone type equipment developed by Irgiredmet and flotation concentrate shipped to copper smelter. The disadvantages of flotation concentrate shipping to copper smelter are following: high concentrate transport cost; problem with gold shipped balance; high cost of flotation concentrate treatment; comparatively low gold recovery. In this connection IRGIREDMET developed the hydrometalurgical technology for gold recovery from flotation concentrate. The flowsheet was developed on the base of laboratory, pilot plant and industrial scale tests conducted by IRGIREDMET in 1987-1997 and lrgiredmet experience on CIP process testing and industrial scale introduction in Yakutia [1-6]. The application of automation and robotic technologies to coal mining equipment at the face offers improvements in worker safety and efficiency. The evolutionary introduction of autonomous, intelligent machines to perform the most hazardous tasks in underground coal mines may become a reality within the next 10 to 15 years. The US Bureau of Mines Advanced Mining Systems research program is developing the technology necessary to achieve this goal. This program consists of both core and applications re¬search that focus on the fundamental issues of sensor-based, computer-assisted, machine control technology. In the near term, the research is directed specifically to the computer-assisted control of present-day underground equipment. The immediate effect will be relocating equipment operators to a nearby area of safety. It is being performed in a manner that can make incremental improvements in safety and efficiency. The research is being performed closely with private, government and academic researchers in the miring, space, armed forces and factory automation and robotics research areas. It is a mixture of basic research, applied research and the application and adaptation of existing technologies from a multitude of sources.

INTRODUCTION This paper will update the status of small sized tunnel boring machines used in both the Mining and Civil Industries. I will mention a) new developments in small size hard ground tunnel boring machines, b) review North American performance records of the Atlas Copco Mini/Midi Fullfacers, and c) compare relative costs in driving a 1200m (4000 ft) typical utility tunnel using a leased TBM versus the conventional drill and blast method. NEW DEVELOPMENTS JARVA MACHINES Of all small rock tunnel boring machines currently in use, the Jarva MARK VI and MARK VIII are receiving the most enthusiastic acceptance. These circular fullface borers using usually 15 inch single disc cutters (manufactured also by Jarva) are designed on the 'T' bracing principle. Previously, Jarva's line of tunnel boring machines, even their smallest, was designed on the 'X' or double diagonal bracing configuration with a gripper in each quadrant. INTRODUCTION In Canada, most of the rock being broken in underground metal mines is being carried out using traditional drilling and blasting methods. Despite advances being made in hard rock boring and other, more exotic techniques, it is Dynatec's belief that the traditional methods will continue to prevail for many years to come. It is also our belief that modest research efforts expended on the traditional methods will result in substantial financial benefits to the mining and rock tunnelling businesses. Dynatec has pursued productivity improvements through the use of long rounds in both shaft sinking and lateral development. The concept of longer rounds was developed by Dynatec on the Craig Shaft Sinking Project (RETC 1991). This paper reviews the Craig Shaft Long Round success. This technology was subsequently utilized to sink the two shafts at Aur Resources with great success. The development of a Long Round Jumbo for tunnelling is a natural progression of the long round technology developed for the Craig Shaft. In relation with the construction of the Sölk power station in Steiermark, Austria, tenders were called in October, 1976, for the construction of the 12-km "Donnersbach collector tunnel" by "Steirische Wasserkraftund Elektrizitäts AG". The specified showed both conventional blast tunneling as well as mechanical excavation with a tunneling machine, diameter 3.55 m. Total construction time from the date of the invitation to tender was given as 4 years. Part of the project was the construction of a concrete circular tunnel lining 20 cm thick. In 1977 the contract was awarded to "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Donnersbach", a joint venture formed by two companies, G. Hinteregger & Söhne, Salzburg, and G. Hinteregger, Bregenz. It provided for the project to be carried out with a tunnel boring machine. GEOLOGICAL DATA The entire tunnel was to be bored through a complex of the garnet mica schist group of the Wölz schists formations. These range from highly quartz-bearing to quartzitic mica schists, with thick, discordantly interstratified beds of marble and dolomite. Over the past decade, the coal mining industry has faced the difficult task of remaining profitable in the midst of declining market prices. Historically, the industry has been quite capable of meeting this challenge by various means. As total costs to mine and market coal continue to increase, new methods of tackling the problem must be implemented. Studies have shown that although many options exist to influence both inby and outby costs, the greatest potential remains in addressing costs at the coal face. Mining operations can positively effect a change in their profitability by either reducing costs, or by increasing production to in turn lower their net cost per man-hour. Original equipment manufacturers can play a key role in both options through the introduction of new technology that permits higher extraction rates, as well as other advantages leading to lower cost coal. A leading advancement over the past 30 – 40 year period has been the advent of progressively higher voltages to operate the mining equipment. This advance enables higher power transmission for a given cable size, operation at lower amperages resulting in less voltage fluctuation, and reduced heat on the cable and electrical components.

Bechtel Civil and Minerals, Inc., one of the Bechtel group of companies, is a large engineering and construction firm that services the mining industry, among others. The firm's head, S. D. Bechtel Jr., comments on how his E&C company is dealing with the recessionary economy. First, he offered a historical perspective. About a half century ago-in the middle of the Great Depression-W. A. Bechtel and several business partners drew up a fixed price bid to build the Hoover Dam. At that moment in history, the W. A. Bechtel Co. was a modest success, but the times were troubled and uncertain. Money was scarce and a lot of contractors across the country were one project ahead of bankruptcy. The bid for Hoover was a make-or-break proposition for Bechtel, and it turned out successfully. The Hoover Dam was a no-frills operation in an isolated and harsh environment. There was plenty of hard work, long hours, and not many amenities. Controlling costs was critical. Everyone knew what had to be done, and why and what the consequences were. Today's Challenge Bechtel is now a bigger, more complex organization whose management views the current economic recession as a challenge to be met in much the same way W. A. Bechtel met the challenge of the Hoover Dam: by pulling together with a sense of purpose and direction. In many respects, Bechtel's situation today has a number of parallels to that which faced my grandfather. The company is eminently successful, but times are tough and there are plenty of signs that they could get tougher. My grandfather bet on the Hoover Dam to insure the future health of his company and I think we can work together again in that same tradition, make some tough decisions together, and the company's future can be just as promising. The first and most important requirement is to make certain that everyone understands the situation. The Bechtel group of companies are in an excellent financial position now. Its workload hit an alltime high in 1982 and it is well positioned in its principal markets. But the next two years may be critical for the company. Traditionally, Bechtel's work load lags behind general developments in the economy. Although many of its clients continue to suffer serious business difficulties, Bechtel is only beginning to feel the impact. The worldwide market for basic metals remains soft; relatively low prices and abundant supplies of oil and gas have flattened the petroleum market and made once promising synfuels projects economically unattractive; utility clients are still caught in the vise between overregulation and escalating costs. And persistently high, long-term interest rates have made capital investments expensive and difficult to justify. The company maintained a healthy workload through 1982. In some areas it has had little new work and consequently has been forced to lay off some staff as projects have been canceled or concluded. In other areas new work has tided the company over and more people have been hired. But new work bookings have fallen off, creating some uncertainty for the near future. 1983 requirements are clear, although seemingly contradictory. Belt tightening and cost reduction are necessary for Bechtel to remain healthy and competitive, enabling it to handle a possible further downturn with a minimum of turmoil and dislocation. At the same time, we need to allocate resources and funds in areas that will keep us positioned for the turn-around marketplace.

The practice of Countertrade and all of its variations has increased dramatically during the last five years in great part due to the worsening world economic situation and the Third World's increasing debt problems. Conventional wisdom has held that the goods finding their way into countertrade will tend to be manufactured goods of ever increasing value added. It is my contention that this has not been the case. The continued depression of most metals and minerals prices has conspired to keep a great number of metals and raw materials in the forefront of countertrade negotiations. The concept that if a country needs hard currency it will simply sell metals into world markets for cash has been significantly modified by countertrade which encourages subsidies for raw materials which are in turn funded by higher prices for the manufactured goods which the country must import. Countertrade is a term that is relatively new to most of us who have been involved in the international trade of metals and minerals, but it is one that we will continue to hear more of in the future. Countertrade as it is generally known today had its beginnings after the Second World War in Eastern Europe. As the shattered economies of Europe struggled to right themselves, a "cashless" system of trade developed. This system included such ancient concepts as barter as well as more modern ones like bilateral clearing agreements. For over 30 years countertrade was confined mainly to the COMECON nations and their various trade protocols with Third World nations. If metals and minerals were involved, there was little disruption of world markets by such examples as Cuba shipping ferronickel and sugar cane to the U.S.S.R. for a host of manufactured goods and oil. As the world's economy began to slow in the late 70's and the debt crisis began in earnest in the early 801s, this all began to change. As more and more nations which had previously been almost totally dependent upon their mineral wealth over-extended themselves in an attempt to industralize, they concurrently found their income from minerals falling, due to the decreased demand and subsequently lower prices available in the marketplace. At first these nations attempted to balance their payments by promoting the sales of their high value-added manufactured goods. We have all heard numerous examples of U.S. companies going to sell their high technology products in Rumania or Yugoslavia and being confronted with counterpurchase requirements for machine tools, shoes or drill bits. When faced with these demands, a number of companies chose not to sell into those markets while others merrily signed up the obligations without much intent to carry them out. The Performance Bonds required were generally minimal, especially when considered in light of the high margin inherent in high tech items; and the penalty clauses were equally small or nonexistent. A third group of companies actually tried to buy the machine tools or drill bits either for their own internal use or resale but found that due to poor quality and high prices, they were faced with a difficult if not impossible task. This is not to say that no one was able to fulfill a countertrade requirement, but the success ratio on these transactions was incredibly low. This was one of the major contributing factors to the reputation that countertrade has gained as a discipline ... "that it is mostly talk and very little action." With all of the publicity, criticism, and notoriety that the mining industry has received over migratory birds, it is diffi­cult to remember that six years ago no one even suspected that this issue would'emerge. After all, cyanide had been used in Nevada mining for 20 years without significant effects on wildlife. Although the mining industry has been buried in unjustified criti.cism for not having a clearer crystal ball, most of those critics forget that no one else predicted this problem either. In fact, the Nevada Department of Wildlife reviewed and had no objections to the Paradise Peak Plan of Operations before they began production. As we now know, Paradise Peak had one of the first and most severe avian mortality prob­lems in the State. It should also be noted that Paradise Peak has done more to research and solve the migratory bird problem than all of the rest of the Nevada mines put together. It is not possible to review all of the research and field work that has gone into investigation of the avian mortality problem over the past five years in this short paper, but a synopsis can be presented. In most instances we can say that we have solved the problem, We have learned what works and what does not. Let's start with what does not work. Unfortunately, the list is long and elaborate, but can easily be summed up in one word: hazing.

Sao Bento Mlnerai;;ao Mine (SBM), located 100 kms northwest of Belo Horlzante, Brazil, was commissioned In 1987t1l to produce 185 kg per month of gold from 240 tpd of refractory sulphide flotation concentrate. The concentrate Is processed by a Sherrill Gordon design pressure oxidation circuit followed by conventional CIL gold recovery process (Flgur .. J). The original plant design foresaw expansion to 480 tpd, and In this regard the acidic effluent neutralisation, CIL and carbon circuits were designed for future expansion to treat the higher tonnage. The pressure oxidation section was sized for 240 tpd with the Intention to double the Installed plant equipment to provide 480 tpd capacity when required. This decision was based In part on the novelty of pressure oxidation to treat refractory sulphide concentrates in 1984 when the process design was finalised. General Mining, Metals & Minerals (Pty) Ltd (GENMIN), has been actively Involved for the past 30 years in the development of bacterial process for the oxidation of refractory gold concentrates; the results of this development program have provided the registered process BIOx®. The successful Implementation of BIOx® technology for treatment of refractory gold concentrates at GENMIN's Fairview Mine In October 1986t2l, as well as the substantial experience accumulated in laboratory and pilot testing of some 40 other sulphide concentrates, Justified reconsideration of the oxidation process best suited to provide the Incremental sulphide oxidation capacity planned for SBM.

No one involved in the contruction business wants litigation, except maybe some lawyers. Contractors rarely resort to litigation unless they have sustained econmic wounds that are serious or mortal. The major cause of serious contractor losses occur because of sub-surface conditions which cannot be defined with certainty in any practicable way except as shown during construction and prove during construction to be substantially worse and more expensive to cope with than anticipated during bidding. Building, Dam and Highway contractors are generally close in their estimates of cost after they get foundations excavated and are building above ground. Their main risk in bidding is the cost of getting out of the ground compared to their estimate. So maybe 10%, 20% or even 30% of their project represent high risk underground work. The tunneling and underground contractor is dealing with high risk work for virtually 100% of his project. He appreciates this risk and is willing to assume it up to a bearable limit. His costs are highly sensitive to relatively small variations of the ground in underground work. His work is unique in other respects. As contrasted with other types of construction where loads develop as construction progresses and do not reach ultimate until the project becomes operative, tunnel and underground construction requires the immediate structural support of ultimate loads that are there when he digs or very soon thereafter. Wastewaters generated during the extraction of gold from the ore can contain a variety of contaminants such as cyanide, heavy metals and arsenic. Proper management of these wastewaters is therefore necessary to minimize the negative impact of gold mining and milling operations on the environment. The Wastewater Technology Centre (WTC),located in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, has been involved in several studies related to the evaluation of various effluent treatment technologies which are relevant to the treatment and proper management of gold mill effluents. These studies have included bench and pilot scale tests, and the evaluation offull-scale systems. Furthermore, the WTC staff developed protocols for cyanide analysis in gold mill effluents, and a mathematical model for predicting the degradation of cyanide in tailings ponds. The information generated by the WTC staff has been referenced in several reports and papers published over the last ten years (Schmidt et.al. 1982, Simovic & Snodgrass 1989, Whittle et.al. 1989, Zaidi et.al. 1989, Zaidi et.al. 1991). Recently, the WTC has started to develop a micro­computer based expert system for use by decision makers in the gold mining industry and relevant government agencies who are involved in process design, process evaluation, costing, evaluation of the best practicable technology, approval of suggested effluent management systems, and so on. This paper presents some relevant background information and a discussion of the latest version of the expert system being developed by the WTC.
