With vehicles frequently found in underground mines and tyres being a major fuel item, the risk of tyre fires will be severe underground. This study presents an in-depth analysis of tyre fires on mining vehicles to increase the knowledge of the risk, applying data from full-scale fire experiments and CFD simulations. It was found that the wheelhouse of the loader caused an increase in the flame tilt angle of approximately 10%, decreasing the flame impingement and heat flux downstream. The flame temperature of the drilling rig tyre was found to be approximately 7% higher than the loader tyre, increasing the risk of igniting adjacent fuel items. The construction of the wheelhouse/mudguard will contribute to a longer flame length by creating a fuel-rich environment. The CFD simulations predicted higher flame tilt angles for the drilling rig case for higher flow velocities, indicating the influence of a varying wheelhouse/mudguard construction and tyre geometry on the flame tilt angle. The construction of the loader resulted in a flow behaviour, where the short distance to the front mudguard/tyre and the separation of flow directly downstream of the protruding construction led to fire gases being steered past the front mudguard/tyre. In the drilling rig case, the longer distance to the front mudguard/tyre led to fire gases being directed towards the body of the vehicle after passing the area with flow separation. An increased knowledge of the tyre fire risk on mining vehicles and mitigating measures would improve the fire safety in underground mines.

Since the adoption of the Surface Mining Reclamation and Control Act of 1977, which mandates that surface subsidence be an intergral part of the underground coal mine design, there has been a sudden rise of demand on guidelines for minimizing surface subsidence and its associated structural damages. Unfortunately there is no sufficient amount of systematic subsidence data to fill such a gap, although considerable research has been devoted to the subsidence-induced damages of surface structures in the past. However, it was said that many surface subsidence surveys have been performed and monitored by coal companies during the past twenty years, and that it will be a great source of information for subsidence engineering design if they can be collected and assembled together. An effort was therefore initiated in the Department of Mining Engineering, West Virginia University, under contract with the U. S. Bureau of Mines in December 1978 to contact each individual coal company in the Northern Appalachian Coal Field for any surface subsidence survey data. After 10 months' survey, the data collected include 17 longwall panels and 2 room and pillar sections. The data in-each panel and section cover the complete set of subsidence survey raw data, underground mine layout maps, surface topo maps, geological loggings showing the stratigraphic sequences and thickness of the overburden, and if available, locations and types of surface structures. On-site visits were followed to study the surface terraines and structures. Interviews were conducted with the owners of the surface structures in most cases about, if any, the history and characteristics of damages.

INTRODUCTION As the population increased along the coast route (California Route 1), and the people’s need to have guaranteed access increased, the landslides and related road closures began to have serious adverse economic impacts. Landslides were causing major long-term road closures about every 10 years on average. In 1983, ground movement at Devil’s Slide caused Highway 1 to be closed for an extended period of time which caused significant economic loss to the surrounding coastal communities. A number of options for bypassing the slide area were considered, and the Martini Creek inland bypass was selected for design. Subsequent litigation led to the creation of the Devil’s Slide Tunnel Study in 1996. The results of this study indicated that a tunnel alternative would be competitive with the inland bypass. The final decision was left to the citizens of San Mateo County, who approved the tunnel alternative in the November, 1996 election After completion of environmental studies and the processing of legal challenges, the final environmental document was finished in 2001. The preferred tunnel alternative was designated to proceed for final design and construction. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Devil’s Slide Tunnels consists of a separated two-lane road, one lane in each direction, which passes through twin tunnels and over twin bridges and then connects with the existing non-separated, two-lane road at each end. The total length of the project is approximately 1900 meters consisting of four main project divisions, which are described below, going from south to north. 1.Operations and Maintenance Center (OMC) area, 2.Southern approach roadways to the South Portals (250 meters), including the South Rock Cut,

"The Subtropolis room-and-pillar mine extracts the Vanport Limestone (Allegheny Formation, Pennsylvanian System) near Petersburg, Ohio. Strata instability problems associated with excessive concentrations of lateral stress caused the mine operator to implement a change in layout design. This mining method has been identified as a stress control layout, which has been used by other underground stone mines in the past with varying degrees of success. Practical experience has shown that entry headings advance in the direction of the principal lateral stress, producing lower stress concentrations with better mining conditions. It is important to minimize stress concentrations along the mining front, so an arrow-shaped advance is recommended. This technique advances more developments (headings) in a “good” direction and reduces developments (crosscuts) in a “bad” direction. As is expected, the stress control layout enhances the potential for shear failures in crosscuts. It is, therefore, important to focus crosscut engineering interventions that either: (a) lower stress concentrations (for example, an arched roof) or (b) enhance strength of the strata containing the shears (for example, rock reinforcement). This study focuses on observing strata conditions on a regular basis and monitoring the response of this strata to changing geologic and mining conditions through 3D Dynamic LiDAR scans.INTRODUCTIONProject AimsThe Subtropolis Mine is extracting the Vanport Limestone in northeastern Ohio. Since the start of mining in 2006, ground conditions have been significantly affected by excessive lateral stress condition. In some other mining districts with this hazard, certain mine layouts have been shown to lessen the potential for unstable ground conditions. The term “lessen” is used to state the realization that stress concentrations are not eliminated but instead occur in less frequency and intensity, and their locations can be projected.The stress-control mine layout, specifically for large-opening room-and-pillar stone mines, naturally evolved at mines suffering from excessive lateral stress problems. These mines will typically experiment with methods to mitigate adverse impacts, thus developing best practices for their conditions. These practices have evolved into a basic framework for the stress control mine layout. For example, Jack Parker was able to write about personal experiences at the White Pine Mine in Michigan (Parker, 1966, 1973). Various researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have studied the effectiveness of stress-control mine layouts over a wide range of geologic conditions (Emery, 1964; Mark and Mucho, 1994; Iannacchione et al., 2003). While the stress control layout design approach has proven successful in many categories, it can be difficult to implement. For example, excessive stress conditions in crosscuts can put the ground control focused intervention at odds with ventilation and haulage constraints, thus limiting optimal crosscut size, shape, and location. Therefore, more information on the effectiveness of this approach is needed."

Saudi Arabia’s mineral potential offers development target that compliment the national effort to diversify the income of this oil and gas economic based nation. Ma’aden, a joint stock company with paid-up capital of US$1 billion, has from its inception in 1997, actively developed in-house engineering and management skills to transform the Arabian shield’s mineral potential into such real projects. Gold mine operating facilities of 100,000 oz/yr underground and 50,000 oz/yr open pit are de-scribed, as well as 3 targets, two of which are underdevelopment; Al Hajar (3,000 tpd at 2.5 gpt Au)and Al Amar (5,000 tpd at 20 gpt Au). Emphasis is also on exploitation of phosphate rock and down-stream fertilizer products, based on the Kingdom’s107,000 sq. km. northern basin geological reserve. Al Jalamid, the prime target, represents 216 million tonnes of these P2O5 reserves. Saudis and expatriates, together, lead international engineering companies and contractors operating and developing these facilities.

Ground falls in longwall gateroad entries remain a concern in modern longwall operations. The gateroads are subject to changing horizontal and vertical ground stress induced by longwall extraction. These stress changes can result in failure of the strata around an entry leading to large deformations of the entry roof, floor, and ribs. The gateroad support systems are required to control the failed strata while maintaining safe access to the longwall face and unimpeded ventilation. This paper presents research that was conducted to better understand the stability issues in gateroad excavations and to develop procedures for evaluating support and layout alternatives for longwall gateroads. Using the results of a field-monitoring program and numerical model analysis of case histories, a conceptual model of gateroad support needs was developed. The conceptual model formed the basis for developing a set of equations that can be used to estimate likely roof sag and support loading for given roof geology and longwall-induced loading conditions. The developed equations were used to compare predicted gateroad stability to field study results, showing satisfactory agreement. The calculation procedures are used to demonstrate their application in assessing support alternatives at a case study mine. It is concluded that the developed analysis procedures provide realistic assessments of likely ground stability and can be used to evaluate alternative gateroad support systems at operating longwall mines.

By 1980, the U.S. mining community had reached a broad consensus regarding coal pillar design. The pillar load could be estimated from tributary area theory, and the pillar strength from empirical formulas and laboratory coal strength testing. Then the growth of longwall mining required new thinking. Recently, powerful design methods have emerged from analysis of large data bases of real-world pillar successes and failures. These include the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS), the Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), the Mark-Bieniawski rectangular pillar strength formula, and guidelines for preventing massive pillar collapses. Sophisticated numerical models have also helped transform the pillar design landscape. In the process, our understanding of pillar mechanics has been greatly enriched. "With mining, especially coal extraction, comes the necessity of supporting the roof. Since the 1950s, the primary method for roof support has been the use of roof bolts. Roof bolting is considered one of the most hazardous jobs in underground coal mining. In 2004, there were 3,405 injuries reported to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Of those injuries, 17 percent were associated with bolting machines (593 injuries). The majority of the injuries resulted from rock falling from supported roof. However, injuries involving a part of the body being struck by, or caught between, during bolting and drilling occurred with relatively high frequency (Burgess and Steiner, 2007).Roof drilling and bolt installation is labor-intensive and repetitive. These labor-intensive and repetitive requirements can lead to cumulative trauma. Operators are expected to perform a considerable amount of lifting, carrying, bending, reaching and stretching. Back and shoulders become sore from bending and twisting to install bolts or lift and position drill steels, wrenches and bolts. Confined operator spaces also contribute to difficult and awkward working positions for the operators (Cornelius and Turin, 1998).In South Africa, the majority of the roof bolting machines used are “man-in-position” style machines (Fig. 1). This puts the operator in close proximity to where the drilling and bolting process is performed. When proper operation procedures are followed, it has been proven to be a very effective, productive and safe system. The MSHA-certified automatic temporary roof support (ATRS), canopies and dust collection system of Fletcher bolters all provide the operator with unparalleled protection. However, there are some occupational hazards inherent to the zone located next to the drilling and bolting zone. This has led some customers to request relocating the operator away from this zone. The idea being that the operators will no longer be located in the face area, greatly reducing their exposure to dust, noise, machine and geological hazards."

Now that the price of sulfur has reached unexpected high levels, it is little wonder that sulfur from surface ores is again receiving attention. In most instances, it is advantageous for an ore to be at or near the surface. However, it is a distinct disadvantage for sulfur ore to be close to the surface because it precludes the use of the Frasch process. The Frasch process depends on the presence of at least 180 m of uniform overburden to allow pressure injection of superheated water into the sulfur-bearing formation to melt the sulfur. In the Frasch process, sulfur separates cleanly from the gangue underground and comes to the surface in a very pure form. Surface sulfur deposits, particularly those in the Western Hemisphere, exist largely due to volcanic activity, and sulfur separation from the gangue is a formidable technical problem. None of the surface deposits are large compared to some of the Frasch deposits, but at the present sulfur price, they are certainly of economic importance. From the turn of the century until 1975, the price of sulfur was for the most part $18-$28/t. However, with the price of sulfur now over $154/t, there are a variety of technical alternatives to consider for sulfur surface ore separation that may not have been economically attractive a few years ago.

There has been an ongoing debate on how to transform engineering education to better prepare students for today`s professional world that is characterized by increasingly complex problems and challenges that engineers are tasked with upon entering the industry. Within the conceive–design–implement–operate (CDIO) framework, entrepreneurship education presents a valuable pedagogical approach to foster the necessary skills of the students through integrated, hands-on, active learning experiences. While numerous publications have addressed possibilities of how experiential, problem-based, project-based and active learning can be integrated into engineering curriculum, there has been hardly any attention on mining engineering with respect to adopting this approach. This paper will address the possibilities of integrating entrepreneurship education into mining engineering programs in particular. This paper will enhance and foster discussion among academics from mining engineering on how to integrate elements of entrepreneurship education on a course, program and departmental level to infuse value creation experiences across the curriculum.

"Since 2005, longwall coal mine operators in Pennsylvania (US) have been required to collect extensive hydrologic and biological data to document pre- and post-mining conditions of aquatic resources (streams and wetlands) overlying the subsidence control plan areas. Continued operation of the longwall mine is dependent upon empirical data demonstrating that the undermined aquatic resources have either been maintained or restored to an accepted range of pre-mining conditions. This study used quantitative hydrologic methods and comparative biological metrics to examine response of aquatic resources to longwall subsidence at the Bailey Mine located in Greene County, Pennsylvania. This study analyzed data from over 25 miles of streams and over 8 acres of wetlands that traverse the 4,779-acre study area. Hydrologic analysis of flow intermittency suggested that there are variable degrees of change to headwater streams immediately following mining; however, the majority of the effects are reversible through streamflow mitigation measures. Furthermore, the post-mining discharge from streams can be restored to within the range of pre-mining conditions the majority of the time. Biological assessments showed that greater than 95% of assessed stream length has maintained its ability to support benthic macroinvertebrate communities following mining and intervention (i.e., mitigation). Comparative metrics of the benthic macroinvertebrate communities showed that the biological community in 48 of the 50 sample sites is being maintained or restored across both high- and low-gradient streams. The effectiveness of intervention was further substantiated by the similarity in recovery times between streams having no intervention (median = 2.1 years, 95th percentile = 4.9 years) and streams with intervention, when recovery times were measured from the date of the intervention (median = 1.7 years, 95th percentile = 4.7 years). Changes to individual wetlands were observed between the pre- and post-mining assessments, but cumulatively a net gain of 7% in wetland acreage was realized. Hydrologic assessments were used to infer whether there was a potential that streams had been affected by mining; however, the ultimate test of stream recovery is based on biological metrics that establish the relative quality of the biological communities following mining. Overall, the hydrologic balance is being protected and the aquatic life use of streams is being maintained within the Bailey Mine’s subsidence control plan areas."

The surface manifestation of underground mining usually entails five distinct types of surface movements, which can affect or damage surface structures, facilities and renewable resources. These movements developing at the surface can be described by (Bell, 1975; Bhattacharya and Singh, 1984): - vertical displacement, i.e. subsidence, - horizontal displacements, - slope or tilt, i.e. the derivative of the vertical displacement with respect to the horizontal distance, - curvature, i.e. the second derivative of the vertical displacement with respect to the horizontal distance, and, - horizontal strain, i.e. the derivative of the horizontal displacement with respect to the horizontal distance.

Polkowice region (Lower Silesia, Poland) is an area, where the copper mining activity started about 40 years ago and new technologies were applied. There are 3 underground mines, 3 processing plants, tailings pond (the biggest one in Europe), pipelines for flotation waste transport, railways. Although new technologies were applied during the copper ore exploitation, the environment in this area were polluted mostly by dust containing copper, lead, zinc and arsenic. Estimated values of heavy metals in polluted soils were compared to the natural contents of this metals. The geochemical background for Polkowice area was defined. The pollution zones occur around mining facilities. Copper ore exploitation and processing is planned for the next 20-40 years depending on market situation. After mines and other facilities closing the most important problem will be sustainable development of this area. To evaluate the scope of revitalization activities the analysis of recent soil environment condition will be necessary as well as forecasts for pollution migration. Geostatistic methods used also in mining will be very helpful for this task.

The article evaluates the convective heat transfer coefficient of ventilation air in a potash mine. The energy balance is obtained through thermal characterization of the ventilation air and rock, allowing for the calculation of heat transfer parameters. Different models for calculating the convective heat transfer coefficient are analyzed. The results indicate that the Pethukov–Kirilov, Gnielinski, and modified Dittus–Boelter models are optimal for this mine. The study also indirectly examines the conductivity of the adjacent rock, suggesting saturation throughout the studied section and the presence of liquid water upwelling in a specific section.

The mining industry is at a crossroads. Currently, there is an estimated $25 billion worth of projects around the world that have been stopped as the consequence of a dispute or disagreement with their communities, the government or some other stakeholder. Anglo American chief executive officer Mark Cutifani is one who sees the mining industry in need of change and on Dec. 12, he gave the keynote address for the launch the Kellogg Innovation Network?s Mining Company of the Future Initiative?s Development Partner Framework (DPF). The launch was held at the Ford Foundation building in New York City. The DPF seeks to inspire and support the mining industry to adopt a new way of thinking and a new approach to how it secures, nurtures and revitalizes its social license to operate. Working with a diverse group of people from faith-based organizations, nongovernmental organizations (NGO) and other stakeholders, Cutifani often had the rather uncomfortable position of representing the mining industry in a room full of people who are far from the industry?s biggest fans.

A methodology is presented for finding feasible or locally optimal designs in the class of homogeneous, countercurrent, processing networks performing two-component non-sharp separations. The advantage of the methodology developed here is that given a set of independent performance criteria (specifications such as network separation factor, beneficiation ratio or recovery), a feasible or locally optimal countercurrent network design meeting those criteria can be found in one step. In the methodology, graph-theory was used to explicitly obtain the exact network responses of specific countercurrent networks. These responses were used to formulate the linear recursion equations whose solution gives the expressions for the countercurrent network responses which are a function of the stage transfer functions for two-component, non-sharp separations. These expressions are also functions of the network variables n and c. These expressions, together with the set of independent design criteria, were solved simultaneously for n and c using the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained, non-linear equations. The network variables n and c embody the coded network design information which is used to find the feasible network design which satisfies the set of independent performance criteria.

Introduction Some people say it is almost impossible to get mining permits in California. Some say the day of the lone mining entrepreneur is past. And some say you cannot make money mining gold where old-timers have already mined it, especially in Tertiary gravels. But a young mining operator and SME member, Tim Callaway, is proving these ideas wrong. Callaway's company, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc., has the necessary permits for its Gardner's Point gold mine in Sierra County, CA. And, Callaway has secured funds for the 7.7 km'/d (10,000 cypd) Tertiary gravel operation. The company's initial goal is to produce 373 to 466 kg/a (12,000 to 15,000 oz per year) of gold at Gardner's Point mine at a cost of less than $6.43/g ($200 per oz). Feasibility studies are currently being conducted to consider product levels up to the 1555 kg/a (50,000 oz per year) involving additional plants and infrastructure. While exploring for other hard-rock properties, the Brush Creek company already operates the Brush Creek lode gold mine. The mine sits high on a ridge south of Goodyear's Bar, which is located on the North Yuba river. It might be noted that the Brush Creek mine has been the subject of media stories recounting how a mine can operate with sensitivity to the environment. Gardner's Point project In 1983, Callaway negotiated with the Gardners Point Ltd. Partnership for control of the Gardner's Point property. The Partnership had been engaged for three years in securing permits, mapping and drilling, and test mining. The Partnership actually mined about 43.5 dam3 (57,000 cu yd) of gravel, which yielded 25.2 kg (810 oz) of free gold. Later, the Brush Creek company acquired ownership of the property. The company then began its own exploration and development program. As underground development proceeded at the Brush Creek mine, plans matured for a high-volume operation at Gardner's Point. Australian and English investors contacted Callaway. A joint venture was negotiated. The Australian owners became majority participants; the Brush Creek company, a minority participant and the operator. The Australian investors agreed to contribute $3.5 million (60%) to the Brush Creek Joint Ventures. The Brush Creek company will contribute its expertise as well as assets and liabilities valued at $2.3 million (40%). About $2 million has been allocated to the Gardner's Point project. Later, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc. sold 50.4% of the company's common stock to English investors for $5.4 million. Callaway negotiated this private placement, which permits further exploration of projects being investigated. Geography and history The Gardner's Point mine is located in the northern Sierra Nevada of California, about 9.6 km (6 miles) east of the little town of La Porte in Plumas County. The mine lies high on a ridge above Slate Creek, which divides Plumas and Sierra Counties. La Porte is accessible from the Sacramento area by a winding, paved, two-lane highway. But the mine is reached only by two different unpaved county and Forest Service roads. Both roads include steep grades in and out of the Slate Creek canyon. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Office of Mine Safety and Health Research conducted an assessment of the effects that ground control mesh might have on rock and float coal dust distribution in a coal mine. The increased use of mesh to control roof and rib spall introduces additional elevated surfaces on which rock or coal dust can collect. It is possible to increase the potential for dust explosion propagation if any float coal dust is not adequately inerted. In addition, the mesh may interfere with the collection of representative dust samples when using the pan-and-brush sampling method developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration for band sampling.
