The Macmillan Pass tungsten property (MacTung) is the largest known copper-tungsten, calcic, exoskarn deposit in the Western Hemisphere. Located on the border between the Yukon and Northwest Territories in northwestern Canada, the deposit crops out on Mt. Allen within the Selwyn Mountain Range. It was discovered in 1962 by a subsidiary of AMAX Inc. and has since been explored by 16,300 meters of surface and underground diamond drilling and by 800 meters of underground development. Geologic reserves are in excess of 30 million tons, grading slightly less than 1.0% WO3. Scheelite (CaWO3 ) is the main mineral of economic interest. Accessible by road, the property is not in production. Previously estimated reserves at MacTung have been unable to fully utilize all the geological controls on mineralization. In the past three years, however, an intensive program has been underway to improve our understanding of the deposit and to use the resulting information in a more precise way. This paper will discuss the key aspects of the geology as they specifically relate to reserve estimation and will demonstrate how these controls are being used in a geostatistical model of the deposit.

Understanding the variability of sulfur and calorific value in coal seams is critical to planning mining operations and marketing the mined coal. In this study, statistical and geostatistical techniques were used to explore the underlying spatial trends present in a large coal deposit. Eight prediction models for the sulfur content of the coal seam were developed. Six of the models were created using geostatistical techniques, while the remaining two models were created using other techniques. The performance of each model was examined by conducting cross validation exercises. The results of the study showed that very pronounced trends and anisotropies were present in the sample data, which had to be accounted for in the modeling. The study found that a cokriging model using sulfur and ash is the best prediction model for predicting sulfur content in this coal reserve.

In 2009 the Gold Quarry open pit mine, located 11 km northwest of Carlin, Nevada, USA, experienced multiple large-scale slope instabilities of the upper east highwall that reduced gold ore extraction for nearly 18 months. The slope instabilities occurred within a weak, consolidated sedimentary sequence that exhibits strength characteristics that are transitional between soil and rock. Instability initiated as mining exposed the lower clay-rich sub-units of the Carlin Formation (Fm.). This deformation created preferential flow paths that allowed groundwater from the upper sandy sub-units to infiltrate low permeability clay-rich sub-units, thereby enhancing deformation of the slope toe which in turn destabilized the upper portion of the highwall. The outcome was a 160 m high slope instability that had a lateral run-out of 850 m. The effort to return the pit to ore production required both the geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations and the preliminary remediation mining activity to be concurrent. This approach required the development of detailed safety procedures and a requirement to modify the remediation design as new results were obtained. An initial challenge was to mitigate a near vertical, 90 m headscarp with blast induced, localized slope failures. Back-analyses applying numerical modeling indicated that the failure surface did not coincide with initial interpretations based on field observations; drilling results eventually confirmed this alternative failure geometry. The final remediation design incorporated shallower slope geometries and an approximately 3 Mt buttress along the base of the Carlin Formation and bedrock contact to reinforce the lower clay-rich sub-units. The outcome is a stable highwall within the Carlin Fm. following nearly ten years of repeated slope instability, and an example of the necessity to conduct appropriate geotechnical and hydrogeological studies during the early stages of a new layback evaluation or new open pit development.

Geomembranes have been used in the mining industry since the early 1970s in solution and evaporation ponds, tailings impoundments, and heap leach pads. Traditionally, heap leach pad lining systems have consisted of a single geomembrane liner placed directly over a prepared subgrade of locally available soil. Heap fills are constructed by placing a layer of highly-permeable drainage stone (overliner) over the geomembrane. Crushed ore is then placed on the leach pad in 3- to 10-m (15- to 30-foot) thick lifts, sometimes reaching final heights of several hundred feet. The crushed ore is irrigated with a chemical solution which dissolves the precious metals from the ore. The nature of the chemical leaching solution depends on the metal being targeted. Low pH sulfuric acid solutions are generally used to leach copper and nickel; high pH cyanide solutions are used to leach gold and silver. The metal-laden pregnant leach solution (PLS) passes down through the ore pile and is captured in a drainage system. Metals are extracted from the leach solution and the solution is then recycled back onto the leach pile. When under load, geomembranes are vulnerable to damage from large stones both in the soil subgrade and in the overlying drainage layer. Although intact geomembranes are virtually impermeable, installed geomembranes will have a small number of holes due to imperfect seams or damage during construction and filling operations. These holes serve as open pathways for leakage into the soil below. Smith and Welkner (1995) estimated liner leakage rates ranging from 5 to 10,000 L/ha/day, depending on the type of heap pad liner and level of construction quality assurance (CQA). Thiel and Smith (2003) reported liner leakage rates up to 2,000 L/ha/day for a valley fill facility with heads ranging from 15 to 35 m.

There is no known, practical substitute for lead in the automobiles, communications systems, medical equipment and computers that Americans use every day. However, there are many who say lead should be stopped at its source -- banned. As America's largest lead producer, The Doe Run Company has ralized that it must do more than mine and reclaim lead efficiently and safely. It must also earn the public's consent to operate if it is to continue to be a viable business. LEAD - THE BRILLIANT PERFORMER: REFURBISHING AN IMAGE It's been an embarrassingly long time since I was a college student. However, I remember there was no course at the University of Missouri's School of Mines and Metallurgy that had anything to do with the public relations aspects of mining or, put another way, the politicization of mining. I haven’t perused the course catalog for Penn State’s College of Earth and Minerals Sciences. But I strongly suspect I wouldn’t find such a course there today, either. A statement by the chairman of one of the country’s largest chemical companies leads to the point I want to make. He described his business this way. He said, “We’re a public affairs company that just happens to produce and market chemicals.” Like chemicals, minerals and mining are politicized today. To the extent that we don’t understand that reality, we don’t understand that reality – and act on it – we’re less likely to survive in this business. Some of you may well be saying to yourselves, “This guy Zelms is an alarmist.” That’s fair enough. Because it is absolutely true that there’s n o known, practical substitute for lead today. And it’s also absolutely true that, knowingly or not, Americans use lead everyday. It’s in our automobile batteries. It’s an integral part of communications systems. High tech (and low tech) medical equipment contains lead. And lead is an essential component of computer and TV screens. But even with all these uses, lead has a negative image today. An image so negative that its very existence is threatened. If you doubt that, consider these two statements made in 1989. Statement one. “It is probably reasonable to argue that exposure is the single most important and critical environmental health problem in the U.S., and possibly also the world…” Statement number two. “Many of the uses of lead should be terminated. We need to go back to the ultimate source: that is, taking lead out of the ground and putting it into the product stream and we need to turn it off at the ultimate source. Not the approximate lead in gasoline, or lead in air, or lead in food. Go right back to the source and start cranking it down." (End quote.) Those are what I call strong statements. And they weren’t made by some celebrity spokesperson for the environment like Meryl Streep. Both these statements were made by Dr. Ellen Silbergeld, whose long list of professional and academic credentials includes: o Adjunct professor and research scientist at the University of Maryland Medical School and Johns Hopkins: o Chief toxic scientist and director of the Toxic Chemicals Program of the Environmental Defense fund; o and President of the Society for Occupational and Environmental Health. If Dr. Silbergeld were the only person making these kinds of statements, it would be one thing. But she’s not a voice in the wilderness, by any means. Also for those of you who say, well since there’s no known substitute for lead, how on earth could it be banned. This study compares three different techniques — decision tree, artificial neural network (ANN) and multivariate regression analysis (MVRA) — for predicting blast-induced ground vibrations in some Indian tunneling projects. The models’ performance was also compared with site-specific conventional predictor equations. A database consisting of 137 vibration records was randomly divided into training and testing sets for model generation. The results indicate that the decision tree is best suited to predicting vibrations. Furthermore, the decision tree suggests that the intensity of near-field ground vibrations is mainly affected by the total charge fired in a round, whereas the intensity of far-field vibrations is governed by maximum charge per delay and charge per hole.

Investigations of underground coal gasification (UCG) have been actively pursued by the U.S. Department of Energy since the early 1970s; the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) conducted its first field experiment in 1976. In conjunction with field and laboratory studies of the process of recovering energy in the form of combustible gases from the burning of coal deposits in situ, an extensive environmental program has been conducted at LLNL under the auspices of both the U.S Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This program has focused on groundwater contamination and ground surface subsidence caused by UCG. The material presented in this paper is a summary of results from the environmental studies of UCG activities conducted by LLNL as described by Mead, et al. (1981) and supplemented by the author's experience with this program in 1980 and 1981. The following sections describe specific groundwater contamination and surf ace subsidence problems encountered during field experiments in northeastern Wyoming, and will discuss implications of preliminary findings from geohydrological investigations of a site in southwestern Washington. Finally, possible environmental control technologies that are most likely to be effective in mitigating environmental impacts are discussed.

The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT), under sponsorship of the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research (OCR), and the American Gas Association (A. G. A. ), has been undertaking the development of one of several processes to convert coal to high-Btu gas as a means of supplementing natural gas supplies. It is anticipated that there will be a significant need for such gas in the foreseeable future in order to meet the ever increasing demands for this preferred fuel form. HISTORY The development of the HYGAS® Process is based on various studies conducted at IGT starting back as far as 1945. Initial work was directed toward production of synthesis gas with subsequent catalytic methanation. By 1964 the concept of the direct hydrogenation of coal to produce methane noncatalytically was well-founded and the chemistry was reasonably well established. Work up until this point in time was financed by the American Gas Association. In 1964 the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research joined with A. G. A. to support the program. The objective at that time was to develop the necessary know-how to enable the design of a pilot plant, a necessary step in the ultimate commercialization of the process. Work for the next three years (1964-1967) emphasized investigation of fluidized-bed technology in the hydrogasification step, where moving-bed technology had been previously employed, as well as identification of commercially available catalysts acceptable for catalytic methanation of the CO and hydrogen in the hydrogasifier effluent under operating conditions in the system. By 1967, the preliminary design of a 3 ton/hr pilot plant had been finalized, and IGT received authorization from OCR to proceed with the detailed design and construction of that facility. An atmospheric ammoniacal thiosulphate leach system was developed to recover gold and silver from residues of the ammoniacal oxidation leaching of sulphidic copper concentrates. Extractions of 88 - 95% Au and 83 - 98% Ag were attained within 2 to 4 hours at 40 - 60°C in thiosulphate leaching of the oxidation leach residues of Manitoba chalcopyrite concentrates analyzing 24.6% Cu, 0.18 oz/ton Au and 4.26 oz/ton Ag and a complex British Columbia chalcopyrite/tetrahedrite concentrate analyzing 18.5% Cu, 0.27 oz/ton Au and 276 oz/ton Ag. Parameters affecting the Au and Ag solubilization included thiosulphate, ammonia, and cupric ion concentrations, temperature, retention time and the degree of Cu extraction and sulphide oxidation in the primary oxidation leach. The precious metals were recovered from the thiosulphate liquors by zinc dust cementation.

"In coal and mineral processing, several numeric parameters are used to quantify the separation performance of unit operations. For density-based separations, the partition curve is used as the starting point for many stages of diagnostic analyses. The curve is often quantified by its midpoint slope sharpness, and this single value is subsequently used for technical evaluation, benchmarking, and comparison. While this analytical approach does depict misplacement by relative density class, it inherently prioritizes middling separation and does not consider process economics or the micro-price value of individual classes. An alternative parameter, the organic efficiency, does indirectly consider process economics, but it does not reveal information on the root cause of lost revenue or misplacement. In this paper, a new analytical approach, the partition moment of inertia, is introduced. This parameter reconciles the technical misplacement data derived from the partition curve with the economic data derived from micro-pricing. The result is a new analytical procedure that promises better use of performance data. IntroductionPartition curves are commonly used in the characterization, evaluation and simulation of various physical separators. In mineral processing, partition curve analysis is routinely applied to hydrocyclones, screens, density separators and other beneficiation technologies that are based on intensive physical properties. Graphically, the partition curve depicts the recovery of particles as a function of the physical property on which the separation is based, such as particle density, size or magnetic susceptibility. Given the probabilistic nature of many real separators, the partition curve often exhibits a characteristic S shape (Fig. 1), similar to a cumulative normal distribution. Other geometric features of the curve are also depicted in Fig. 1, including the high and low closeout, or bypass, values; the midpoint slope; and the separation cut point, defined as the property value with 50 percent recovery.Partition curve analysis was originally proposed to evaluate coal washability (Tromp, 1937). Given the limited computational resources at the time, the analytical methods relied heavily on graphical construction and interpretation of the curve. Owing to the simplicity of calculation and interpretation, many of these graphical approaches are still widely used for performance analysis today. The most common calculations are based on the slope of the partition curve at the midpoint. Increased slopes correspond to enhanced separation performance, as a perfect separation exhibits a stepwise transition from 0 to 1 at the desired cut point, that is, an infinitely large slope. One common formulation of this slope, the Ecart Probable, Ep, is derived by evaluating the slope between the 25 and 75 percent recovery points:"

Completion of the Hall Street Coal Transfer Terminal in St. Louis marks the beginning of a major shift in the movement of coal to the power generating stations of the Midwest and South Central regions of the United States. The location of the terminal is significant. The 10 million ton- per-year facility is the first high capacity rail-to-barge transfer terminal to be built on the western shore of the Mississippi. This terminal and others to follow will link the massive coal fields of the West with the high coal consuming markets adjacent to the 25,000-mile Inland Waterway System.

Many coal mining companies have potential surface mine reserves which either are known or suspected to have had prior drift mining activity on them. In many cases, there is no documentation on these mines or at best, very fragmented records. These undocumented abandoned underground mines are creating engineering, financial, and environmental difficulties and concerns for both surface coal mine operators and regulatory personnel. This paper examines the use of resistivity techniques in detecting entries of abandoned drift coal mines. The detection of such a drift mine entry would confirm the presence and orientation of an abandoned underground coal mine.

Every underground coal mine in the United States must deploy and operate a wireless communication and electronic tracking system. This paper addresses the reliability and availability of an installed tracking system and the communications infrastructure that supports it. This paper assumes that the tracking system uses the communication system to perform its operation. A particular interest is the requirements for the systems to operate continuously without failure after a mine disaster for 24 hours, and the requirements in the MINER Act for the tracking systems to be “functional, reliable and calculated to be serviceable” and the communications systems “redundancy.” These requirements imply a certain reliability and availability. This paper describes a quantitative way to assess these systems requirements, using tools that are available to and commonly used by the reliability, maintainability and availability community.

For the first time, surface subsidence prediction theory was used to investigate roof movement around longwall face mining in a steeply dipping coal seam. A physical simulation experiment was conducted to quantitatively study the roof migration patterns, the gob materials, and the characteristics of bed separation and compression caused by mining two adjacent panels to gain a better understanding of ground control issues in multipanel mining in steeply dipping seam. This approach provides an in-depth analysis of the movement of the roof. Compared to movement observation of survey point using total station, the Photogrammetry Analysis for Physical Modeling of Mine Subsidence Program (PAPMMSP) method is easier to perform, faster and yields the much higher accuracy required for scale physical modeling. It is also a more effective observation method for underground-mining physical simulation experiments.

It is probably safe to assume that most operating personnel working in coal preparation plants are exposed to noise levels in excess of the MESA Noise Regulations unless they are wearing ear protection. The excessive in-plant noise levels have received little attention until recently. Noise control has not been an important design consideration in existing coal preparation plants. This situation is rapidly changing as plant owners and plant operators are requiring that new coal preparation plants be designed to provide a safe noise environment for operating personnel and also meet MESA Noise Regulations. This paper discusses the noise exposure hazards, noise generating mechanisms, and some possible noise control solutions for typical coal preparation plants.

A mathematical model was developed for the grinding and flotation section of Union Carbide's Bishop mill and this model was used to indicate how variations in grind, retention time, and calcite and fluorite content effects the mill capacity, tungsten units produced, and the grade and recovery of the scheelite concentrate. A model such as this is a starting point in determining the economic optimum running condition for a mining and milling operation and an example of this is given.

Introduction The vibration energy that travels beyond the zone of rock breakage is wasted - all it does is cause damage and annoyance. Under favorable geologic conditions, this energy may travel many kilometers before it finally drops bellow the background noise level. This has forced the introduction of more restrictive limits to the allowable vibration levels. To maintain the profitability of a mine or quarry and to comply with environmental protection legislation, blasting needs to be performed in a more predictable way that will ensure that the final results are optimal in both mining and environmental terms. Minimization of ground and induced structural vibration is, therefore, a matter of good blasting practice -not just an attempt to avoid complaints from neighbors. A new approach to blast vibration minimization is presented. The method utilizes the existence of the local minimums in the frequency spectrum of single-hole blast vibration. The results are presented as a delay map showing maximum ground or structural vibration velocity for many combinations of interhole and interrow delays. A blast engineer can use this map to select an optimal combination of delays that will produce a low vibration velocity at a selected location and, at the same time, will be acceptable from the point of view fragmentation or muck pile shape. Response of structures A typical single-story building has two distinctive forms of vibration. The first form is a translatory vibration of the building superstructure (frame), and the second form is a flexural-bending vibration of the structural elements such as walls and floors (Siskind et al., 1980). Walls and floors will have several modes of oscillation. The most important is the fundamental mode of the vibration, as this mode will have the lowest frequency, the largest amplitude and will cause the largest deformations. The vibration of walls and floors is also a source of secondary vibration within a building, due to the movement of loose objects, e.g., furniture and wall fittings (Dowding, 1985). The subjective estimate of the amplitude of a vibration by the occupants of a house will be unrealistically high due to the effect of the secondary vibrations. It is now well recognized that human perception of ground vibration begins at levels that are far below those that will produce minor damage to the most fragile structures. In mining and quarrying operations, complaints regarding vibration levels tend to be determined more by human perception or annoyance rather than by observations of damage. Ground vibrations on the order of 0.08 mm/s (0.0032 ips) (Walter and Walter, 1979; Murray, 1987) can be felt, and they are often subjectively estimated to be about 100 times greater. Amplification of ground vibration in the structure depends on the amount of energy in the ground vibration spectrum that is in the vicinity of the structure's resonant frequencies together with the damping ratio of the structure at these particular frequencies. One way to avoid significant vibration amplification in a structure is to shift the dominant part of the ground vibration away from the resonant frequency range of the structure. The presented method allows for the selection of the optimum blast timing (interhole and interrow delay times) to minimize the resultant ground vibration amplitudes in a given frequency range. It also allows the selection of suboptimal, but still acceptable, blast delay times, which may be preferable from the point of view of overall blast performance. Determining frequency ranges of importance in structures In attempting to avoid amplification of vibrations in the structure, ground vibration amplitude of frequencies close to the resonant frequencies of the building needs to be minimized. The width of the frequency-minimization region is determined by the value of damping in the building. If the damping ratio is low, then the frequency-minimization region around the resonant frequency will be relatively broad. By shifting the dominant part of the ground-vibration energy into the frequency region much higher than the resonant frequency of the building (1.5 to 2 times), it is possible to achieve efficient vibration isolation of the building. In such cases, the structural dynamic amplification of ground vibration will be less than unity. The first step in this minimization process is the determination of the structural resonant frequency. Engineering and maintenance personnel often face a long and potentially expensive trial-and-error period in order to find the best process equipment to handle lime. Limestone is mined from a quarry in the form of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Then, it is crushed and fed into a kiln at approximately 1,093° C (2,000° F), where the carbon dioxide is burned off (calcining) to make calcium oxide (CaO).

The Minerals Industry makes heavy demands for and on its Material Handling equipment. It also gives progressive management the opportunity for considerable savings, ad consequently increased profits. In some cases, cost of Materials Handling amounts to 40°/o of the total cost of the ultimate product. Handling costs are hidden in overhead, indirect labor, excessive maintenance, productive workers performing handling tasks, and, a great many more. Even though Materials Handling is the oldest occupation of mankind, it is only within the past twenty years that it has emerged as a specialized field. While this industry has made full use of all types of mechanical and vibratory conveyors, pneumatic conveyors in their proper application can be a distinct asset. me use of pneumatic conveyors by this industry however is limited- to a certain extent by the particle size of your products through the various phases of manufacture, as well as their bulk density. However, with increasing knowledge of the fluidization of dry materials, their use is becoming more wide spread.
