Cobalt, nickel, and manganese can be recovered quickly, cleanly, and selectively from cobalt-rich manganese crust by leaching in dilute acid solutions in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Common selective precipitation methods can then be used to recover these metals from the leach liquor. The leaching reaction produces only oxygen as a byproduct, and the waste residue from leaching was tested and found to be non-hazardous under existing EPA specifications. The leaching process is effective in either fresh water or seawater. This research is a part of the Bureau of Mines program to identify the mineral resources of the Exclusive Economic Zone and devise methods for recovering their valuable components.

It started' in 1936 when some Dutch adventurers wanted to scale the highest mountain in the South Pacific. Quite by accident, they discovered the Ertsberg, a contact deposit of magnetite laced with chalcopyrite, in a high mountain valley where it had been gouged at by glaciers and finally left as a solitary pillar for its discovery by a geologist who lent purpose to the expedition, Dr. J.J. Dozy. By the-.time a report was published describing the deposit, war had hit the Netherlands. Perhaps again by accident, the report was uncovered in 1959 by the East Borneo Company. At this point, Freeport entered the scene through its vice president for exploration, Forbes Wilson. During the course of a meeting on laterite prospects, the Ertsberg was introduced and he put the wheels into motion for Freeport to join in its exploration. You might, at this point, ask yourself whether you or your company would have taken on a venture to look at a reportedly large high grade copper outcrop in New Guinea, an unexplored land known best for its inhospitable climate, terrain and head-hunters. I heard the chief executive of one large mining company comment sometime back that neither he nor his company would have gotten involved. I won't attempt to describe the trials of the initial exploration expedition that passed through dense-man grove swamps, tropical jungle and across jagged mountains a distance of some 200 miles to get to the Ertsberg in 1960. It should be chronicled by its participants - Forbes Wilson, Del Flint, and John Bowenkamp. Needless to say, the participants relish the experience but wouldn't be among those volunteering for a return engagement. As a result, the Ertsberg changed from a reported outcrop to a mineral deposit containing an estimated 13 million tons with systematic surface sampling indicating a copper grade of over four percent. Moreover, the deposit extended to an indeterminate depth with the possibility of doubling or tripling. reserves well within reason.

"The U.S. Geological Survey and Natural Resources Canada conducted a study on the net import reliance of each North American country, and the impact of North American trade on the net import reliance of 12 nonfuel mineral commodities that are associated with advanced technology products: cadmium, cobalt, gallium, germanium, graphite, indium, lithium, nickel, rare earth elements, selenium, silver and tellurium. The combined results for North America, using 2014 data, showed greatly reduced net import reliance for nearly all of the commodities evaluated, which is largely the result of pooling the resources of production and recovery in Canada and Mexico of materials that are consumed in the United States. This study highlights the mitigation of potential supply risk for critical materials that results from trade within the North American trade bloc. IntroductionMultiple metrics and definitions exist for what constitutes a critical material, but there is broad acknowledgment that a mineral commodity may be considered critical if, among other factors, its production is geographically concentrated, if it has few or no substitutes, or if the country of origin is politically unstable. Numerous governmental and independent researchers have proposed methods of investigating criticality, with differing priorities such as economic resilience or strategic military supplies (European Commission, 2014; Graedel et al., 2015; U.S. National Science and Technology Council Subcommittee on Critical and Strategic Mineral Supply Chains, 2016). While criticality really depends on who is asking the question, and despite the differing priorities, there are several commodities that are commonly found to be of concern. In particular, some critical or potentially critical materials are used increasingly in advanced technologies, or they have complicated supply chains because they are coproduced or are produced in controlled markets.Commodities for which imports are required to satisfy domestic demand are those for which the importing country is net import reliant. The Seismic Interactive Interpretation Workstation (IIW) integrates various sets of geophysical and geological data to form a network of information which is stored in a database. Computer models are generated from known drillhole information and later correlated with the processed seismic data. Seismic color processing adds another dimension to the interpretation process. Complex trace attributes provide better definition of subtle features not easily observed from black and white sections. Utilizing the computer workstation, the explorationist gains valuable insight and conducts more intelligent interpretation of seismic data through a more comprehensive network of data analysis.

In many underground mines the excavated ore is produced during the blasting process. Drilling machines that are used to drill the blastholes, where later the explosives will be mounted, are crucial for this task. In order to optimize the currently used techniques, great emphasis is placed on increasing the efficiency and safety of blasthole drilling operations. The natural consequence is the development of monitoring systems and algorithms for processing operational and historical data. In this article, we present the result of the analysis of drilling data carried out as part of the IlluMINEation project. The paper proposes an algorithm for work cycle detection for drilling machines, together with the estimation of general operating parameters and diagnosing the drilling process on the basis of long-term data. Based on the available data, selected components of the drilling cycles have been indicated. Several approaches based on the parameters of the defined cycles are proposed. These approaches can be used in the future to create a full-fledged system for examining the effectiveness and safety of mining drilling rigs.

A recent development in underground drilling has been the introduction of the down-the-hole drill, an old and very familiar tool to the surface operator. The idea of moving such a rig underground is not new. Tests were conducted at INCO in Canada and Mt. Isa, Australia in the early 1960's, and St. Joe used one for underground exploration in their Missouri lead mines in the mid-1960's. However, the trend to full scale production programs did not start until the mid-1970's. The first successful North American test was at INGO in early 1973. This led to a large-scale pillar recovery and open stoping program which en¬compassed 25 drilling units by mid-1976. Meramec Mining Company tested a unit using air boosted up to 200 psi (140, 000 kg(m2) in the summer of 1973 which by 1976 led to an open stope and pillar drilling program using 12 units. By mid-1976, production units using boosted air were also in use at Pilot Knob in Missouri and at St. Joe in Balmat, New York. Experimental and utility units were in use in several other mines and down-the-hole drills were being seriously considered for at least one major new underground mine.

A real-time transient pipeline simulation was used to model the operational pressure response in the concentrate and tailings pipelines of the Minera Los Pelambres copper mine in Chile. A high-fidelity simulator was needed to train the operators on safe operation of the pipeline for different scenarios. A simulator that solves the transient equations was used to dynamically predict the pressure and flow throughout the pipeline to provide real-time responses to operational changes such as opening or closing a choke valve, or sending a water batch. Slurry rheological properties were incorporated into the model. This paper presents the technical background of the pipeline simulation model and the study of slurry properties. The paper shows the results of the transient simulation for different operating scenarios such as start-up, shutdown and leakage, by presenting the hydraulic gradient curves for each case. Finally, the paper briefly presents how the simulator was connected to an emulated control system and used to train the operator, it demonstrates the most effective tool available to learn to resolve undesirable conditions.

The coal mining industry is being called upon to vastly increase production in the coming years. Many mining operations will have to prepare an environmental impact report of some kind and all will have to comply with various types of environ- mental regulations. Therefore there is a great need within the industry for access to environmental data, information, and literature. This paper discusses the informational resources available, the current lack of access to these resources, and the Environmental Data, Information and Literature (EDIL) Bank of the Kentucky Institute for Mining and Minerals Research. The bank's major emphasis concerns the environmental, social and economic aspects of producing clean solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels from coal. The data bank promotes information interchange between other related governmental and private projects and the energy development community.

Providing a suitable protective water barrier pillar (PWBP) is common to reduce inundation hazards in underground coal mines. The imperative factors influencing its performance include the water head acting on the pillar, cover depth, pillar width, strength properties, and permeability characteristics. The mechanical failure of such pillar is a stress-controlled phenomenon, whereas the hydraulic failure is a strain-based phenomenon. A finite-difference numerical modeling approach was developed to study the hydro-mechanical coupled behavior of protective water barrier pillars. The mechanical stability was evaluated in terms of the percentage of failed (ZoF) and intact zones. The influence of the strain-controlled weakening on the permeability of the flow medium was studied through the coupling of the mechanical and hydraulic effects. The coupled steady-state model was used to estimate the outflow rate and its hydraulic stability. The adequacy of the protective pillar was also investigated by assessing mechanical stability and capability to resist hydraulic pressure against the maximum expected water head. A seepage rate-based classification system has also been proposed to evaluate the seepage potential and assess the hydraulic stability. The model has been validated for two case studies at the cover depth of 136–189.5 m and the existing pillar width of 16–42 m against the water head of 25–141 m.

Sustainable Development is a very broad initiative in the mining industry, with major components running over the entire life of the mine. It likely commences with pre-exploration permitting and continues to post-mining final closure and possible land reuse. Most major mining corporations embrace the sustainability initiative, either out of a sense of social responsibility or out of necessity in order to continue doing business. But many may view the overall initiative as an added ?cost of doing business.? In many elements of sustainability, there clearly can be added cost ? some as simple as complying with self-imposed sustainability reporting. Fortunately, one major element of sustainable development can clearly be shown to reduce costs ? energy resource management. This paper will describe how the mining industry sustainable development effort differs from other industries, but can benefit from their experience in energy resource management. The mining industry can utilize proven methods from other industries to further their energy management efforts. In addition, many of the resources developed and employed to promote better energy resource management in non-mining industrial settings will be listed.

Canada's gypsum industry began over two hundred years ago in the Maritime Provinces when farmers attempted to supplement their incomes by selling "land plaster" to traders bound for the United States. Rising from such humble beginnings, gypsum now contributes significantly to the economies of nine of Canada's ten provinces. Thirteen open-pit and three underground mines produced a total of 8.38 million tonnes of crude gypsum and seventeen processing plants manufactured 2.49 million tonnes of finished products in 1985. Recent economic growth in North America has resulted in steady increases in gypsum production, however, competition from foreign producers and by-product gypsum poses a growing threat to Canada's gypsum mining industry.

The first phase of an investigation of the chemical composition of subsurface water and the hydrochemical processes in and near the abandoned Nordic tailings at Elliot Lake, Ontario, was conducted in 1979. The Nordic area, which covers 85 hectares with an average thickness of 10 m and overlies deposits of permeable glaciofluvial sand, contains 15 million tonnes of tailings with 4-7% pyrite. Nests of standpipe piezometers installed at three locations on the tailings indicate that seepage through the tailings is predominantly downward. The water table in the tailings slopes from the north side of the tailings dam, where it is within a metre of surface to the south side near the tailings dam, where it is approximately 10 m below surface. When they were deposited during the period from 1957 to 1968, the tailings contained pore water at a pH of about 8 resulting from neutralization treatment in the mill. At the three piezometer nests, the pH increases from 3 near the water table to 7 near the bottom of the tailings. The pore water in the tailings is gradually becoming acidic because of oxidation of pyrite in the zone above the water table. The concentrations of Fe, Mn, Ni, Co, Zn and Pb are high in the shallow acidic zone and much lower in the deeper neutral zone. Concentrations of 226Ra range from 30 to 230 pCi/L. At the three sites concentrations of major ions in the permeable sand a short interval beneath the tailings indicate 226Ra presence of tailings seepage, but Ra concentrations are only 2 to 8 pCi/L. Greater downward penetration of 226Ra probably occurs in the area closer to the tailings dam. Monitoring of a network of multilevel bundle piezometers installed in permeable sand that extends southward from beneath the tailings indicates the occurrence of a plume of tailingsderived water containing high concentrations of Ca, Mg, Fe and S04 that extend 400 m downgradient from the tailings dam. The total dissolved solids decline from 20,000 at the dam to less than 500 mg/L at the identifiable downgradient periphery of the plume. A much smaller but distinct plume of water with high heavy metal concentrations and 226Ra in the range of 10 to 130 pCi/L extends from beneath the dam for a distance of 15 m. The pH of the groundwater in this heavy metal-radium plume is 4 to 5, whereas elsewhere in zone of groundwater with high dissolved solids, the pH is above 6. Selective flocculation was used to produce superclean zinc concentrate with minimized silica contamination. Research was carried out on a flotation concentrate from the Jersey Miniere Zinc Company (JMZ) in Gordonsville, Tennessee. The material was first dispersed with sodium silicate and then causticized tapioca starch was used to selectively flocculate the sphalerite, leaving the silica in suspension. This technique has been applied commercially to iron ore beneficiation but has never been used for processing zinc. The feed material assayed 0.45% Si02. Use of 0.56 kg/tonne (1.13 lb/st) of sodium silicate and 0.070 kg/tonne (0.141 lb/st) of causticized tapioca starch resulted in 98.2% zinc recovery in a purified zinc concentrate assaying 66.0% Zn and 0.24% silica. The present target level for silica contamination in JMZ zinc concentrates is 0.3% Si02. This work has shown that selective flocculation offers a potential method for cleaning flotation concentrates, particularly where low silica products are required.

The first reaction in organizing a project of magnitude is that it's the same as smaller projects -- just bigger. This is not totally correct. The industry's record of completing big-money jobs on time and within budget is not outstanding. From a personal point of view, my question is: What is the project size at which controls are lost? Is it controls? Is it the number of pieces of equipment? Is it the number of decisions to be made? The slowness of communications? Or is it a combination of all of these? In working on multimillion-dollar jobs, the percentage of overrun seems to be lower or show an underrun when the following basics are followed: 1) Preplanning is intensified 2) Data gathering is complete 3) Approach is optimized 4) Planning is realistically scheduled 5) Changes are minimized 6) Decisions are expedited

Investors and other stakeholders are increasingly concerned about the quality and quantity of sustainability disclosures as well as the extent to which such disclosures correlate with sustainability practices of mining firms. This is because disclosure policies vary widely across firms in terms of extensiveness, materiality, and disclosed topic. In this paper, we conduct a preliminary examination of the relationship between sustainability performance and disclosure. We use sustainability performance indicators such as water and energy use and the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board’s (SASB’s) standards to evaluate disclosures. Our preliminary results show that some measures of sustainability performance (energy use) are negatively correlated to the amount and quality of disclosures while others (water use) are not. Thus, investors should not judge sustainability performance based solely on the amount and quality of sustainability disclosures. In addition, our results suggest that firm size and ownership as well as institutional membership could impact the strength of correlations between disclosure policy and sustainability performance

Planning today for what hopefully will never happen is one of the surest ways to decrease the chance of it happening. As Napoleon proved and Ian Mitroff wrote, "The heat and stress of battle is the worst time to make decisions of strategic importance." Mitroff also wrote, "The value of a plan is not that it will ever perfectly match reality, but going through the process of planning speeds the process of recovery. It allows the organization to emotionally work through the worst before it actually happens." This paper concentrates on things miners must consider; on the need for plans to be like a belt conveyor strong enough to carry the load, flexible enough to stretch a little; on the criticality of throwing away fax machines and telephones, and having certain officials at the scene rather than back in head-quarters; on the training of fire brigades and mine-rescue teams; on having company-controlled chromatographs; on having people who can look at trends rather than numbers. Some of the things in this paper might anger some readers; for that, I can only ask them to consider first the problem not their position.

Three major types of solution chemical equilibria involving flotagents (Le. flotation reagents such as collectors, frothers and modifiers), minerals and solution play a crucial role in determining the behavior of complex flotation systems. Minerals of phosphates (apatite and francolite), tungsten (wolframite and scheelite) and associated carbonates (calcite and dolomite) are sparingly soluble in aqueous solution and form dissolved mineral species in bulk solution. Such dissolved species interact with mineral solids, often resulting in surface conversion of the minerals. In addition, they can interact with various flotagents and lead to surface or bulk precipitation and loss of selectivity in the flotation. Relevant solution equilibria of such sparingly soluble minerals and their interactions with oleic acid and structurally modified reagents were determined in this study using a multi-pronged experimental approach. Methods to manipulate and control the solution chemical equilibria and thus achieve selectivity in flotation systems are discussed.

The Wyoming craton in the western United States is a favorable terrane for diamond deposits. The craton hosts a variety of ultramafic, ultrabasic, and ultrapotassic rocks. Additionally, a few hundred 'kimberlitic' heavy mineral anomalies and some geophysical and remote sensing anomalies indicate the presence of undiscovered, mantle-derived, pipes in the craton. The Wyoming craton is separated into a Wyoming 'archon' known as the Wyoming Province, and the Colorado 'proton' known as the Colorado Province. The 'archon' underlies much of Montana and Wyoming and continues north into Alberta and Saskatchewan; the Colorado 'proton' underlies much of Colorado and a small portion of Wyoming. Although most exploration geologists would consider the 'archon' the most favorable terrane for commercial diamond deposits, the 'proton' has produced more than 120,000 diamonds, while the 'archon' has not been very productive.
