Since the late 1970's, the Roof Control Division (RCD) of MSHA's Technical Support has been performing linear analyses for the enhancement of miners' safety. This remote sensing process uses Landsat data to predict areas of potentially hazardous ground conditions in underground mines. To date approximately 700 analyses have been completed by the RCD, with nearly 75 being performed with the current equipment, software and methodology which was updated in early 1995. While success is difficult to measure, requests for linear analyses continue to come from large and small mining companies which suggests the industry's acceptance of the process.

This paper is an update of the activities of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, other government agencies, and the automotive and truck industry concerning diesel emission control. Enacted and proposed regulations from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and developments in diesel emission control are presented in terms of their impact on underground coal, metal, and nonmetal mines. Mine air quality regulations proposed by MSHA may require the underground mining industry to comply with new standards. Some mines may be required to take additional actions to meet new diesel particulate and lower nitrogen dioxide exposure standards; however, the mining industry is in a position to benefit from emission controls developed for the on-highway diesel engine market. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has enacted regulations to reduce emissions from on-highway diesel trucks and buses. Engine manufacturers have responded by developing cleaner burning engines. Fuel producers have responded by providing cleaner burning reformulated diesel fuel, and exhaust aftertreatment devices have been developed to provide additional emissions reductions. Bureau research and development projects seek to determine the advantages of using modern engines and fuels, and to evaluate the efficacy of new exhaust control devices on mining machines. It appears that the diesel engine will continue to be a practical power source for use in confined environments because no other available power source is as mobile and efficient.

Two recent antitrust cases, coming from widely separated areas, different industries and involving wholly different facts were decided by the Supreme Court on June 7, 1965. The decisions in these two cases may well prove to be the most important and far-reaching decisions in the field of labor law that have been handed down in the last 24 years. These cases, although quite dissimilar factually, had one common element. In both, the gravamen of the antitrust violation was bottomed on the terms of labor agreements negotiated by a multiemployer group. These cases are usually referred to as Pennington1 and Jewel Teat. Since a number.-of references will be made to the antitrust laws, it may be well to state briefly the applicable portions. Section I of the Sherman Antitrust Act makes "every contract, combination in the form of trust or otherwise, or conspiracy, in restraint of trade or commerce among the several states, or with foreign nations, is declared to be illegal...". Section 2 imposes criminal sanctions against "Every person who shall monopolize, or attempt to monopolize, or combine or conspire with any other person or persons, to monopolize any part of the trade or commerce among the several states...". Under Section 4 of the Clayton Act a person who sustains damages as a result of a violation of the antitrust laws is entitled to recover treble damages plus costs.

Before undertaking to present to you a current analysis of copper, I would like to preface my remarks with a few observations that in themselves have a bearing upon commodity reviews in general. Having sat through a large number of such reviews since first joining the A. I. M. E. nearly forty years ago, I have no illusions about the hazards of the undertaking. If a speaker presents a statistical summary of commodity economics for the last year, most of his audience, having already read at least four commodity summaries on the identical subject, either get up and walk out or fall asleep. Should the latter happen, and were the listener to tumble from his chair and break his neck, obviously the speaker is liable. The subject matter seldom lends itself to histrionics on the part of the speaker so dangers of heart attack in the audience are not too great. Therefore the speaker, in order to retain listener interest, resorts to prophecy. Such venture was undertaken long ago by weather soothsayers, the "harouspex" of Ancient Rome, who generally cut up a sacrificial sheep and after staring at the entrails made their predictions which I understand had a batting average somewhat better than those undertaken on Wall Street based upon Dow Jones averages. Not being a licensed harouspex I cannot undertake predictions. I shall, however, fall back upon the experts.

In most current practice, the methods that are employed in technical evaluations of cement raw materials are deterministic; i.e., decisions among alternative raw mixes and alternative plant designs are reached with the aid of only "average" compositions and "representative" samples of the available raw materials. Nevertheless, cement plants are sensitive to raw-material variability, and uniformly high-quality raw materials are not so abundant as they once were. Some simple examples will illustrate how geological techniques can be combined with geostatistical and operations-research approaches to customize mining and processing systems to deal with variable raw-material compositions.

Rio Tinto Coal Australia (RTCA) developed Meandu Mine in Queensland, Australia in 1983 to supply thermal coal to the adjacent newly constructed Tarong Power Station (TPS). In designing the mine, RTCA selected Meandu?s best economic reserves for a 25-year life based on station owner Tarong Energy Corporation?s (TEC?s) estimated life for TPS. That 25-year plan changed dramatically in the early 2000s when TEC approved life extensions to TPS?s four existing units plus construction of a fifth unit. After reviewing Meandu?s remaining reserves, RTCA decided the nearby Kunioon reserve offered the more economic option for maintaining deliveries beyond 2010. Those plans changed yet again in 2007 when TEC chose to purchase the Meandu Mine and nearby reserves rather than extend RTCA?s contract. TEC then selected Thiess Pty Ltd (Thiess) to continue operating Meandu until the new mine at Kunioon could be developed.

The movement to reclaim abandoned mine sites has gained momentum as federal, state, and private organizations have increased their commitment and resources to tackle mutual, and often controversial, problems of health and safety. Numerous interorganizational agreements have been implemented to promote cooperation in the characterization of mine site hazards, development of mutually acceptable plans of remediation, and sharing of actual cleanup requirements. Working through these partnerships, the federal land management agencies have begun to focus on abandoned mine reclamation in selected, priority watersheds and other drainage basins. Although there are major difficulties to overcome, significant progress continues to be made.

"The authors have successfully developed an innovative rehabilitation concept, which meets actual technical standards and minimizes the impact on the operation of a key conveyor tunnel. A flexible and stepwise ground support rehabilitation program utilized a combination of yielding steel arch sections with grout filled fabric hoses, which represents a fast and safe backfilling support system. The system was developed and successfully installed at Bingham Canyon Mine, the world’s largest open pit copper mine, which also includes numerous underground structures. The mine is owned and operated by Kennecott Utah Copper (RTKC) a fully owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto. The system was implemented at a conveyance tunnel, which was originally designed as a railroad tunnel, but was re-commissioned and is currently used as a conveyor belt tunnel to transport ore from the open pit to processing facilities outside the mine. The existing structure showed signs of overstressing due to movements in the surrounding rock mass, which had to be addressed with a yielding support system in order to provide safe access into the tunnel. However, the impact on the conveyor belt operation due to support installation was to be limited to the bare minimum. Keywords: rehabilitation, yielding support, mining, stabilization, and grout filled fabric hose.PROJECT DESCRIPTION The C6 Tunnel is considered a critical asset for the operation of the Bingham Canyon mine as it comprises the standard route for transporting crushed ore from the open pit to the processing facility on a continuous conveyor belt system. The C6 tunnel was originally built as a railroad tunnel. Construction was completed in 1959. The original horse-shoe shaped cross section of the tunnel was 18 feet wide and 24-1/2 feet high [8]. The tunnel length was approximately 18,000 feet. During its service life, the railroad tunnel has undergone several transformations. The length of the tunnel towards the Bingham Canyon pit was shortened over the course of mining operations and the railroad tracks in the tunnel were removed. The invert was partially backfilled (3 feet typical) and a 72 inches belt conveyor was installed. Currently, the C6 Tunnel is nominally only approximately 21 feet high and 15,000 feet long. Ground Support and Rehabilitation Measures prior to 2014 The C6 tunnel was mined mainly with conventional mining methods, using drill & blast as the typical one. However, the weak geological sections, such as those encountered in the Fortuna fault, were excavated by shaping and chipping with machine-held moils [8]."

With the extension of mining beneath residential and industrial areas, it is becoming increasingly necessary to extract coal and minerals in such a way that subsidence damage due to groundmovement is reduced to a minimum. Understanding clearly of the mechanism of subsidence development is a must in view of the environmental problems and the energy crisis today. This paper gives a simple analysis of various components resulting from subsidence and the influence of other factors on their development. An up-to-date review of the subsidence and strain profiles is presented, with particular references to the coal mining operations. The importance of this topic from mining damage to structures, buildings properties and environment in mining areas is undeniable. Field results are discussed.

Phosphate rock, which is a prime source of phosphate used in fertilizer manufacture in the United States, contains uranium. In general, the uranium content of the rock increases with the phosphate content and most high-grade phosphate deposits (>30% P2O5) contain 0.01- 0.02% U3 8. The large tonnages of rock being mined represent a significant potential source of uranium that lends itself to recovery as a by-product of the wet-process phosphate industry. For example, in 1953, the U. S. Geological Survey estimated that recoverable phosphate reserves in the U. S. totaled about 5 billion tons and contained 600,000 tons of uranium. I This estimate did not include any rock from North Carolina which has since been estimated at about 2 billion tons. For the most part, the known, economically mineable U. S. reserves - estimated at about 7 billion tons - are concentrated in a few areas: 43% in the western states of Idaho, Montana, Utah and Wyoming; 28% in each of Florida and North Carolina and less than 1% in Tennessee. In the past, Florida has supplied about 80% of the total U. S. production, practically all of which is land pebble phosphate. All forecasts indicate increased production rates from North Carolina and the western states.

Introduction The Sleeper mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 56 km (35 air miles) northwest of Winnemucca, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit was discovered in 1984 by an Amax exploration geologist. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility studies and metallurgical testwork. Final evaluation of the mine potential proceeded very quickly. The project received Amax board approval in July 1985. Eight months later, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold ($1 million) was shipped one month later, in March 1986. Total plant capital was $27 million. Payback was achieved in six months. The Sleeper mine was expected to produce 1.6 t (53,000 oz) of gold and 1.3 t (41,000 oz) of silver annually. However, the ore body exceeded all expectations. Production for the first 10 months of operation amounted to 4 t (128,000 oz) of gold and 2.9 t (94,000 oz) of silver. Direct cash operating costs are in the $1.77/g ($55 per oz) range. Amax is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine's life. (See update on page 242.) Geology The Sleeper gold deposit is located on the northwestern flank of the Slumbering Hills and in the Awakening Mining District. Rocks exposed in the vicinity of the deposit are interbedded siltstones, sandstones, and limestones of Triassic age. They are overlain by latite lava flows and tuffs of Tertiary age. Dikes and sills of latite and andesite intrude the sedimentary rocks. Quaternary deposits of mostly sand with minor gravel and clay cover a pediment containing the gold deposit. The sedimentary and volcanic rock units have been transsected and offset by extensive north- northeast trending faults and less abundant northwest trending faults. Both fault systems fractured and prepared the ground for subsequent invasions of mineral-bearing hot spring geothermal waters. The hot spring systems produced widespread hydrothermal alteration and gold mineralization at silicified centers near feeder fault structures. The deposit is hosted by siltstone and latite that have been hydrothermally brecciated. The main breccia is elongated north-northeasterly. The hydrothermal breccia zones appear to dip steeply to the west. Gold mineralization consists of native gold and electrum deposited in two or more high-grade quartz-breccia veins. Productivity is a fascinating concept. Like motherhood or apple pie, we know it as a good thing. Just what it means is not so clear. To a coal miner we assume it means tons of coal hauled from the mine. To the company president it means profit after capital, labor, and other costs have also been reckoned. To the government economist it means output in a balance of payments. What does it mean to the biologist, and can reclamation really be productive? In this paper we discuss productivity from a biological viewpoint, give some yield data for various types of reclamation plantings, and discuss how our demand for or acceptance of differing kinds of productivity is tied up in bigger questions of land use, environmental stability, and resource allocation.

The Climax Mine is a panel caving mine which has had a long history of incidents of severe ground control problems. The nature of the ore deposit, which lends itself to the caving meth- of of production, a1 so makes the mine susceptible to large scale stress concentrations which are referred to as ?weight? problems. These problems have increased with increased production and also with expansion to deeper mine levels. During the past twenty years the mine has had to learn to cope with these problems in order to remain in operation. A number of practical guidelines and useful techniques have emerged from these efforts. The purpose of this paper is to share a few of these ideas. The Mine is located near Leadville, Colorado on the continental divide at an elevation of 3450 meters. The ore body is a large low grade deposit of disseminated molybdenum sulfide. It measures about 1200 to 1600 meters in diameter and it had an original depth of about 660 mters. The Mine has been in operation since 1918 and the massive nature of the ore body together with its blocky, highly fractured condition made it natural for the caving system to have been adopted for production at an early date. Open pit mining was started in 1973. The total plant has a capacity of more than 50 thousand tons per day, and more than 400 million tons of reserves at an average grade of 0.310 percent molybdenum disulfide remain to be produced.

Asbestos production in the United States is no match for the vast operations of Canada and the U.S.S.R. The majority of U.S. production is limited to the states of Vermont, California and Arizona, and the type of asbestos is limited to the variety of serpentine known as chrysotile. What little production of other varieties of asbestos such as tremolite and anthophyllite that has occurred over the past 100 years since asbestos became a useful commodity is of practically no significance. However, new developments in the field of environmental and occupational health hazards has startled the mining industry in this country and has already given a few particular companies reason to be concerned about the profitability and probability of their continued operation in the business of mineral processing. At the heart of these developments is the question and controversy over just what constitutes asbestos and what exactly is the definition of a fiber. To the mineralogist or, in fact, to practically anyone engaged in the process of mining and separating minerals there is little or no question about asbestos. It is not a distinct mineral but rather a commercial product serving specific applications for which a number of fibrous mineral types can qualify. To the hygienist pr health authority this definition is too general. They demand something they can detect, measure and control. To suit their purposes and simplify their task of detection, they have labelled the minerals chrysotile, crocidolite, amosite, tremolite, anthoph-yllite and actinolite as asbestos, and any particle of these minerals with an aspect ratio of 3:1 as an asbestos fiber. "Federal regulations require the installation of refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines. Mobile RAs have a limited ability to dissipate heat, and heat buildup can lead to a life-threatening condition as the RA internal air temperature and relative humidity increase. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Office of Mine Safety and Health Research performed heat testing on a 10-person tent-type training RA and contracted ThermoAnalytics, Inc. to develop a validated thermal simulation model (TSM) of the tested RA. The TSM was used to examine the effects of the constant mine strata temperature assumption, initial mine air temperature (MAT), initial mine strata surface temperature (MSST), initial mine strata temperature at depth (MSTD), and mine strata thermal behavior on RA internal air temperature using 117 W of sensible heat input per simulated miner. For the studied RA, when the mine strata temperature was treated as a constant, the final predicted RA internal air temperature was 12.8°F lower than it was when the mine strata thermal behavior was included in the model. A 10°F increase in the initial MSST resulted in a 7.1°F increase in the final RA internal air temperature, whereas a 10°F increase in the initial MSTD yielded a 2.5°F increase in the final RA internal air temperature. INTRODUCTION Since 2008, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has required the installation of refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines (1). MSHA requires that RAs provide an environment with breathable air for entrapped miners for a 96-hour period. Heat buildup inside an occupied RA is a serious concern. Without a means to dissipate the heat and humidity generated by the occupants and the carbon dioxide scrubbing system, the temperature and humidity inside RAs could lead to severe discomfort or heat stress depending on the mine ambient temperature before and during occupation of the RA. NIOSH recommended an apparent temperature limit of 95°F in its 2007 report to Congress (2). In 30 CFR 7.504, MSHA has specified a maximum apparent temperature of 95°F inside an occupied RA (3). The apparent temperature is calculated using both air temperature and relative humidity (4). Calculations could be used to determine if the air within an occupied RA will reach the apparent temperature limit. In these calculations, in order to simplify the problem, the mine temperature could be assumed to remain constant. With this assumption, the effects of the mine strata thermal mass and thermal conductivity on the heat buildup in an RA are ignored. OMSHR research has shown that the mine air and strata temperatures surrounding an RA increase when subjected to the heat of an occupied RA (5). Thus, calculations performed with the assumption that the mine temperature is constant would under-predict the resulting dry-bulb temperature and apparent temperature for a given RA occupancy. The mine air temperature has been used as the basis for RA temperature calculations. However, research has not been used to confirm that the mine air temperature is the appropriate basis."

The quantity of coal recovered by diamond coring techniques is not sufficient in many instances to make meaningful coking and/or ash fouling tests. Quantities in excess of that obtained by conventional coring techniques, usually in amounts exceeding 500 pounds, has been designated bulk sampling. During the past three years, AMAX Coal Company has utilized five methods of bulk sampling. It was our desire to obtain a bulk sample that was diagnostic of the seam by the most expedient and economical method. From the beginning all of our efforts have been directed to methods which would extract the required coal from slim boreholes which provide quick and inexpensive access to the coal seam, regardless of depth, terrain and accessability. In our efforts and investigation several large diameter cores have been taken from thick coal seams at relatively shallow depths in easily drilled rocks. On the other hand, for deeper thin seams multiple large diameter coring is more expensive and time consuming. It is somewhat less expensive when multiple cores are taken from a single slim borehole utilizing deflection coring, although considerable skill is necessary.

The story of the Aitik mine begins in the early thirties. At that time blocks of low grade chalcopyrite impregnations were found in Swedish Lapland not far from the present mine, some 40 miles north of the arctic circle in the vicinity of the iron ore field at Gällivare. The ore prospect was viewed upon several times. By means of geophysical studies and an extensive diamond drilling programme during the end of the fifties and the beginning of the sixties a huge low grade ore body was discovered under the muskeg overburden. In 1965 55 million tons of ore with 0.5 % Cu was known to a depth of 160 ft. In 1970 the ore reserves had increased to 165 million tons with 0.40 g, Cu at a depth of 400 ft. Decision to develop the mine and to start production at an annual production of 2,2 million tons was made in 1965. A mine and concentrating plant, the A section, went on stream in 1968. In 1970 decision was made to expand the production with 3,3 million tons pr year. A second section of the plant, the B section, went on stream during the end of 1972 and the beginning of 1973 The production in the initial plant has been increased to 3,1 million tons pr year and during 1974 the combined A and B sections are expected to treat' about 7,2 million tons of ore. The two sections will treat 10,000 and 13,000 tons per day.

High-purity quartz (SiO2) is an important material widely used in many industries, including semiconductor technology, telecommunication, and optics. The content and distribution of impurities in quartz significantly affect the processing methods. This paper provides an insightful review on the processing of high-purity quartz, covering the analytical techniques, separation methods, and the critical procedures used to assess the quality of quartz ore. More importantly, the critical review of the thermal phase transition separation method for fine-grained mineral inclusions, micron-grade fluid inclusions, and lattice-bound trace elements is notably opened for the first time. It is proposed that the research field as a monopolized industry would benefit by expounding the critical problems that occur during the preparation of high-purity quartz.

Coal mine ventilation systems are often subject to high leakage rates. As a result, changes in airflow resistance will strongly affect the efficiency with which air is delivered to the working place. One major source of airflow resistance is the line brattice used to direct air from the last open crosscut to the working face. Because it is a great distance from the fan, the resistance of the line brattice can result in more overall leakage than an equivalent resistance closer to the fan. Substituting auxiliary fans for brattice eliminates this source of resistance, with improvements in system efficiency and cost. Also, in some mines, the leakage that leads to spontaneous combustion can be reduced. The benefits obtained by several different brattice and fan substitutions have been studied by Mine Ventilation Services, Inc., under contract to the Bureau of Mines. Changes in main fan duty were compared with additional costs associated with auxiliary fans. Results indicate that in some circumstances, considerable leakage reductions and cost savings are possible.
