Experiments were performed under batchwise wet grinding conditions with dolomite mineral. The vibration signal was received by an accelerometer and transmitted to a mini-processor. The signal was first stored on a digital tape recorder (OAT) in voltage format during the grinding tests. The original signal was then re-sampled and converted into data format for IBM or compatible personal computer by a digital oscilloscope. The root-mean-square (RMS) and power spectrum was estimated on the time-domain vibration signal. A partial correlation analysis was applied to the frequency-domain signal to detect the non-zero correlation between the frequency bands and the operating parameters. A multiple stepwise regression was used to locate the key frequency bands for describing a particular operating parameter. After vibration analysis, the operating parameters in grinding, for example, the mill speed, the powder filling, the pulp density, the pulp temperature and the particle size were found to be strongly correlated with a few frequency bands. The grinding process could therefore be monitored using the vibration signal.

The variogram is the function used to express the intercorrelation of a regionalized variable. It is used to quantify, for example, the natural variability of mineralization and in that sense may be thought of a average disimilarity between metal quantity at two points inside a deposit.2 As David2 explains, appropriate mathematical functions of distance and direction are used to characterize variograms, a process that he says is analogous to selecting a normal or lognormal model for an observed distribution. Methods for choosing a model for the underlying variogram of a random function based on the sample data appear in the literature.3,8 A crossvalidation procedure is available to check the validity of the model.3 However, statistical validation of the choice of the model through the mechanism of hypothesis testing is not presently available. In the section to follow, notation and background material is presented upon which a large sample test procedure will be constructed. The stationarity assumptions presented refer to covariance stationarity. A test procedure is then proposed, and an example is given for the case of the one dimensional random process.

One of the most important decisions in mine development is the selection of the mining method. Open pit or underground methods are selected depending on the shape of the deposit, and its position with respect to the surface. When the decision is not clear or evident, then the common rule is to compare underground and open pit projects to choose the one which yields the maximum return. However, in some circumstances' the best alternative is to start-up the operation with an open pit until a point where mine operating costs make more convenient to employ an underground method. In this case, the final pit limit is not directly related with commodity prices and its position is a funtion of capital and operating costs associated with both methods. The goal of this paper is a mans of establishing the proper ultimate pit considering a potential underground mine. The methodology is quite simple and can be implemented to work with a variety of available routines for pit optimization, such as Lerchs-Grossmann, floating cone, network flow and the Lemieux moving cone optimizing algorithm, which is the tool used by the author.

During the past fifteen years considerable progress has been made in the technology of slope design. It is possible to design rational slope angles if suitable data on geology, hydrology, and rock properties are available. It is of course preferable to conduct a full scale slope design study, but there are those situations where a full scale study is not feasible because of time and budget constraints. In this paper we will treat two situations: (1) choosing slope angles for a preliminary feasibility study at the exploration stage; and (2) dealing with a slope failure in an operating pit. In these instances slope angles must often be chosen on the basis of available or readily obtained data. In an exploration program all too often a feasibility study is initiates just a few months prior to the decision deadline to drop the property or to exercise an expensive purchase option. If all that is available at this point are a few cross sections at odd angles showing ore and waste contacts and a dog-earred map of the surface geology there may not be time to collect and organize enough information for design of slope angles. On the other hand if during the drilling program geologic cross sections are constructed and the structural data is presented in tabular form, rational slope angles can be determined within the allotted time. Certain types of data can be collected only at specific times during a project. Two prime examples are logging fracture intensity and collecting samples for rock testing before the core is split. It is particularly disheartening to ask to see the core and to be shown a tattered cardboard box filled with plastic bags of sample pulps.

Bigger flotation cells can result in larger froth surface areas and longer froth transport distances, this has been credited to impact froth recovery. Thanks to recent advancements, the newer flotation machines can be designed with different launder and crowder arrangements to enhance froth management. Nevertheless, lower head grades, complex ores and even larger mechanical flotation cells can lead to insufficient froth collection, even if the cell is equipped with the most recent flotation advancements like the center launder design. Aforementioned issue can become critical at the end of the flotation row. Increased crowding has been proven to be a solution to overcome inadequate froth recovery. However, scaling-up crowders for larger flotation cells can rise challenges, particularly in terms of structural limits and design for service. This paper presents the development journey for the Spider Crowder Upgrade, an advancement to improve froth collection in large flotation cells that are already equipped with center launders.

"INTRODUCTION Shield tunnelling is often used in constructing underground infrastructure in cities due to the ability to limit settlements and damage to existing buildings. However, in an urban environment with soft overburden and buildings on pile foundations such as the North-South Line project in Amsterdam, there is a tendency to design the tunnel well below the surface and below the pile tip level in order to reduce interaction between tunnelling process and piles. This results in deep tunnels and deep station boxes. When the tunnels are located close to the surface and above the pile tip level, this would reduce the required depth of the station boxes and the construction cost. Moreover, other benefits of shallow tunnels are the low operational cost in the long-term and shorter traveling time from the surface to the platforms. Still, the tunnels should be constructed in such a manner that existing buildings are not structurally damaged, which results in a minimum required distance between tunnelling process and existing buildings. In this paper, the extent of the area that is influenced by tunnelling will be investigated in order to determine the limit distance from tunnelling to existing foundations without inducing too large building deformation. From analysing empirical data of many shield tunnels, Peck (1969) firstly presented the settlement trough on the surface induced by tunnelling in soft soil as a Gaussian distribution. This is also confirmed by other authors (Cording and Hansmire, 1975; Mair et al., 1993; Ahmed and Iskander, 2010). In this study, the Gaussian curve is used to investigate the ground movement when tunnelling in order to find the effects on existing structures. Based on the results from centrifuge test and empirical data, Mair et al. (1993) showed that the subsurface settlement profile distributes as the Gaussian curve also. The width of settlement trough at the depth z depends on the depth of the tunnel z0 and a coefficient K depending on depth. Other studies by Moh et al. (1996), Grant and Taylor (2000) and Jacobsz (2003) based on Mair et al. (1993) proposed a limited change of K in various kinds of soil."

"In Crossrail’s Farringdon station, compensation grouting was successfully utilized to mitigate the surface settlements induced by the tunneling works. The main focus of this study was the platform tunnels, which were approximately 300m long each and were enlarged to platform size using sequential excavation method (SEM) from the existing TBM running tunnels, initially supported using sprayed concrete linings. The rear grouting injections were carried out at a typical distance of minimum 5m above the completed, fully strengthened shotcrete lining hence inducing some additional stresses. In-tunnel monitoring using surveying targets was performed systematically to ensure that no excessive distortion of the initial shotcrete lining occurred. 3D finite element analyses were utilized to back calculate the actual “effective” pressure that was imposed on the completed shotcrete rings against the additional measured in-tunnel displacements due to the compensation grouting episodes. Additionally an assessment of the theoretical, “maximum” allowable grouting pressures that would lead to overstressing of the lining is presented. INTRODUCTION As part of the back analysis performed for the SEM tunnels in Farringdon station, an investigation of the effect of compensation grouting on the two constructed platform tunnels was undertaken. The platform tunnels were 10.6m high by 11.4m wide and approximately 300m long each. They were enlarged to their final shape from the existing TBM tunnels using SCL methods. This study utilized 2D and 3D finite element (FE) analyses in order to back calculate the observed tunnel crown displacement, assessing the equivalent grouting pressures during the rear injection episodes of the concurrent grouting operations. The results provide a useful reference for the order of magnitude of the grouting pressure load cases that can be applied in the numerical simulation of similar cases. Part of the results presented in this paper, were derived by the second author as part of his Master of Science thesis in Technical University of Graz."

Operators of underground coal mine shuttle cars are exposed to numerous hazards including noise, dust and musculoskeletal trauma. The repetitive nature of shuttle car operation leads to fatigue-related incidents and soft tissue injuries. The poor visibility conditions, and dust and noise increase the occupational hazards to the operator, as well to other miners. To reduce the risks for all miners, towards providing a safer working environment for all workers, the introduction of autonomous shuttle cars is essential. This paper introduces a project to demonstrate the feasibility of incorporating autonomous shuttle cars in the underground coal mining cycle. The autonomous shuttle car will be able to localize itself, to map its surroundings and to navigate in an underground GPS-denied environment. It will also navigate efficiently by fusing different on-board sensor modalities, autonomously planning the optimum path and traversing around the mine while avoiding collisions with humans and other static and dynamic obstacles. This will be achieved by exploring and testing different state-of-the-art techniques and off-the-shelf components, and integrating them into existing equipment, i.e., retrofitting an actual shuttle car. Moreover, a modified mining system will be demonstrated which will incorporate the autonomous shuttle car, capable of making real-time decisions, into the mining cycle. The system will regulate the interactions between the autonomous machinery and the human dynamic, with emphasis given to the safety of the workers, and enable the real-time, remote supervision of the mining process. The focus will be on coal mines, where the room and pillar mining method is used. INTRODUCTION The growing demand for mineral supplies combined with the steady decline in the available surface reserves has driven the mining industry to mine deeper underground deposits. These deposits are difficult to access, and the environment may be hazardous to mine personnel (e.g., increased heat, difficult ventilation conditions, etc.). Moreover, current mining methods expose the miners to numerous occupational hazards such as working in the proximity of heavy mining equipment, possible roof falls, as well as noise and dust. In recent decades, the utilization of autonomous machines has evolved in the mining industry to provide increased health and safety to mine personnel and reduce their exposure to adverse conditions. Automation aims to remove the workers from the hazardous conditions which may be present in an active mining area and place them to a more comfortable and safer environment at a distance from the active mining face. Examples of incorporation of autonomous machinery in the mining industry include the fleet of more than 100 autonomous mine trucks that are employed at the Rio Tinto’s iron ore mines in Western Australia for material haulage. There are also semi-autonomous, teleoperated LHD machines employed at several mines around the world (e.g., Sweden, USA, China). However, the operation of the autonomous machinery in these cases is either partial (semi-autonomous, teleoperated vehicles) and of small-scale or occurs at surface mines where GPS significantly facilitates the autonomous navigation of them.

The Homer-Wauseca Mine is operated by the Hanna Mining Company, three miles north of Iron River, Michigan on the Menominee Iron Range. The mine produces 5,300 tons of direct shipping iron ore daily. The present main producing level is at a depth of 1,500 feet below the collar. The ore body continues to a depth of 2,700 feet below the collar, to which depth the modern circular concrete shaft has been completed. A view of the property is shown in Figure #1. This paper is a report on the development of large underground boreholes used initially to conduct stope filling material into inaccessible, mined-out stopes. Later holes were drilled for ventilation raises, for mine drainage, for passageway for power cable, also for the primary breaking point for long hole stoping. Some, which were drilled as ventilation raises, were later stripped to a suitable size for a manway or ladder road. The holes varied in size from 6" to 30" with the present popular, economical working size being 16 1/4", used as a stope fill passage in mined out areas and for ventilation in deeper development. Foremost has been the desire to develop equipment suitable for drilling raises large enough for manways.

Mill #4 processes mildly refractory ore from Carlin Trend deposits. Diagnostic analysis of plant operating data was used to generate a mathematical model containing the key parameters influencing the gold recovery. The model was used to direct modifications to plant operating practice. The cyanide dosing strategy was changed to reduce preg-rob gold losses and cut reagent consumption A finer grind was achieved without capital investment. The density in CIL was lowered, and tighter control was exercised over plant throughput. These changes resulted in a recovery increase of at least 2%, worth $111,000/month at $300/oz, and concomitant reagent cost savings of $55,000/month.

Introduction Shotcrete, by the American Concrete Institute definition, is mortar or concrete pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a surface. The term gunite is still common in literature. It is a trade name established by Cement Gun Co. of Allentown, PA, around 1911 for a dry mix of fine aggregate material, hydrated at the nozzle, and pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a surface. This article will discuss shotcrete applications, ingredients, mix proportioning, batching and mixing, admixtures, testing, and steel fiber vs. conventional shotcrete. Applications Shotcrete is used primarily by the mining and underground construction industries to temporarily stabilize an excavated rock surface until a permanent cover can be installed. It may also be used as the permanent covering material. Other uses include refractory material, architectural finishes, slope stability, wearing surfaces, repairing existing concrete structures, fireproofing, and corrosion protection of steel. Wet Versus Dry Process In the wet process, all ingredients, including water but not accelerator, are mixed the same way as normal concrete before its placement by pneumatic projection. The accelerator is added in a liquid state through the nozzle at the point of placement. In the dry process, all ingredients, including acceleration in dry form but not water, are mixed just before placement by pneumatic projection. Water is added through the nozzle at the point of placement. Liquid accelerator may be added at the nozzle in the dry process. Ingredients Shotcrete consists basically of the same ingredients as concrete with some limitations. Type I, II, and III cements are used. However, Type II seems to be used most in underground applications. This can be attributed to ground water at most sites having slight to moderate concentrations of sulfates. Air-entraining cement or air-entraining admixtures are generally not used in dry mix shotcrete. It is generally agreed that it is impossible to entrain air due to the absence of the usual concrete mixing action, and the high velocity of impingement of the material on the application surface. Air-entraining cement or air-entraining admixtures are used in wet mix shotcrete. Their use, however, is not widespread due to the placement method and the fact that high velocity air drives off most of the entrained air. Test results are not conclusive in showing any durability increase of shotcrete to freezing and thawing by using entrained air. In spite of current practice, the trend is toward additional research, with more agencies and owners requiring the use of entrained air. The philosophy behind this is that some entrained air is better than no entrained air to increase durability to freezing and thawing. The aggregates used in shotcrete are the same as those used in concrete. However, the largest coarse aggregate presently used is 19 mm (0.75 in.). A typical gradation requirement is shown in Table 1. The water quality requirement for shotcrete is the same as that for concrete. Accelerators are by far the most important admixture in shotcrete.

This paper deals primarily with roof bolting in Kentucky coal mines from January 1, 1949, through December 31, 1954, a six year period. The Consolidation Coal Co? (Ky.), a division of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co., began systemmatic roof bolting in November 1948 in Mine #204, Elkhorn #3 Seam, at Jenkins, Kentucky, After the efficiency of roof bolting had been proven by the Consolidation Coal Co., this procedure was adopted by other companies throughout the state. In December 1954, approximately 46.4 percent of Kentucky's total production of coal from underground mines was obtained from roof-bolted areas. Statistics in this report will show the progress made in roof bolting during the six years, in addition to the roof bolting being done as of December 31, 1955. Significant progress has been made in the coal mines of Kentucky in reducing the roof-fall fatality, rates, during the past several years by adopting systemmatic roof bolting. The ground work by the Consolidation Coal Co, (Ky.) in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Mines was based upon the previous experience of the St. Joseph Lead. Cc, in its Southeastern Missouri Mines and The Tennessee Coal and Iron Division of the United States Steel Corporation. The essential foundation upon which to build an effective marketing program in industrial minerals is the ability to produce competitively mineral products meeting precise customer specifications and to ship them promptly and on schedule. Without this prerequisite, all the other factors in a second marketing program-creative sales management, energetic solicitation, advertising, technical service, new products, etc.are without meaning. The primary image to be created in the mind of customers is that of the reliable and prompt supplier of mineral products at competitive prices and of standard, uniform quality. With this favorable image implanted, it becomes possible to integrate the other essential factors into a strong marketing program; and without this image, little can be accomplished. After having .made provision for the basic product ion position outlined, there are then two fundamental considerations in the design of a successful marketing program for industrial minerals. The first of these is that the number of potential customers for the typical industrial mineral product is, relatively small, and indeed compared to the number of customers for consumer products, the number is actually minute. The second consideration is that the customers for industrial minerals are manufacturers and producers rather than consumers. These two factors lead to a necessity that the marketing program be specifically and uniquely tailored to fit the individual mineral product to be sold and to conform to an existing pattern of distribution.

The Arab community is formed by around twenty countries in Africa and Asia, linked basically by a common language-Arabic - and the same religion, the muslim. They jointly occupy around 12 million square kilometers with a total population of around 140 million people. Nevertheless, these nations differ widely in their geographic area and population. Thus, while Egypt has a territory of over a million square kilometers and a population of nearly 40 million people, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain have, among the three of them, less than 30, 000 square kilometers and a million inhabitants. The per capita income also vary greatly, depending on whether they are oil producing countries or not. Generally speaking, it can be said that these countries economies have been based on oil or agriculture and that in these last years, they have been making serious efforts to increase their degree of industrialization and have greatly improved their infrastructure. This trend has resulted in the development of the iron and steel industry, which is still in a stage of primary development.

As part of the 3RPORT Project, a 5-mile tunnel is being excavated underneath the three rivers of Fort Wayne using a 19-foot diameter Slurry Tunnel Boring Machine. The groundwater pressure at the tunnel axis ranges from 4.5 to 5.3 bar. The rock mass hydraulic conductivity is very high with water inflows up to 10,000gpm imposing significant challenges to the project. After excavating 1,550-feet of the TBM tunnel, major leaks between the tailskin and the segmental lining were observed, indicating the potential deterioration of the tailskin brushes and the need for inspection and eventual replacement. The first part of the paper describes the planning of the intervention, including the design of the polyurethane grouting campaign, the procedures developed for the execution and the controls established during construction to timely assess the presence of potential hazards. The second part of the paper focuses on the experience gained during execution and lesson learned to prevent future occurrences of this nature.

A ground-support system for grizzly and haulage drifts was tested in Magma Copper Co.'s San Manuel mine. Eight two-piece, wide- flange steel sets were erected in a ventilation drift on the 2315 grizzly level. The sets were lagged with three different materials and back- packed with pea gravel and sand. The pillar on either side of the drift support system was instrumented with stressmeters and rock-bolt load cells, the backfill with pressure cells, and the steel sets with load cells. Results indicate a better survival rate than with typical monolithic concrete.

For gold mines, orebody uncertainty is one of the leading causes of differences between planned and actual production. Geostatistical conditional simulations create multiple equally probable orebody block model realizations which are conditional to the current drilling information and demonstrate the sampled grade distributions and spatial statistics. These simulated block models are key inputs for a stochastic evaluation to show the likely range of grades and cash flows to be delivered by a mine plan. The stochastic evaluation outputs can be used to compare different mine plans in terms of expected values and risks to planned grades, production, costs, Net Present Value (NPV) and other plan metrics. For the McLaughlin gold mine, risk profiles are demonstrated to show how different mine, cut-off and stockpile strategies can reduce risk and improve expected value. The strategies considered were effective in improving expected NPV and reducing or eliminating tonnage uncertainty, but the strategies had little impact on reducing the uncertainty of NPV’s or mill grades. The stochastic evaluation process is also used to compare the risk impact of orebody uncertainty against the risk of not achieving planned mining tonnages or vertical advance rates. Risks for plans created with and without stochastic mine plan optimization are also compared.

The advent of Nuclear Energy has caused a phenomenal growth in the uranium mining industry. To keep abreast of this surge the mining industry has located many ore bodies, determined the best types of mining adaptable to this particular type of ore and developed a highly specialized type of operation. But, has the mining industry gone far enough in the planning? Has ?built-in? safety been included in the efficient methods of operation? Preplanning safety in the mining industry, as in all industries, takes engineering and ingenuity combined with the experience and cooperation of all concerned. A system of mining can be planned on a map and it will look good. However, when the actual mining takes place, conditions may be such that deviations from the original plans may be required because of excessive water faults or other conditions encountered. With safety we may also be required to change, to conform to the characteristics of a particular operation. People in the mining industry are well aware that loose back has killed miners each year. This condition occurred in practically all types of mines. The condition is not new to us. It is also known that explosives, haulage, machinery and conditions common to all types of mining have taken a heavy toll of human life in mining. In addition to these hazards in the uranium mines, the hazard of radon is also present, Radon is a radioactive gas liberated from ores containing radium. This gas is released into the active workings by the blasting or breaking up of the ore. Sometimes it is caused by radium contaminated water seepage from abandoned workings or from the ore body itself. Until the action of this gas on the human was known, many miners were affected. Un- less adequate precuations are taken to protect the people in these mines,, they may be exposed to this hazard, Health researchers made a study of this substance to determine how it would affect the health of the men, They also studied men who had worked in previous years, in mines known to have contained radioactive materials. All of this research contributed to the present knowledge of radon and its daughter products. It is not flammable nor explosive, but, if allowed to enter the body through the respiratory organs it can cause serious damage. Mines have been operated in the past and are still being operated, which were known to contain explosive and noxious gases, indicating that this problem can be controlled. Several states have instituted laws that make it mandatory to provide adequate ventilation and use of monitoring devices to limit radon and its daughter products to a maximum of 300 micro-microcuries per liter of air. This is considered a safe limit for sustained periods of human exposure. While the findings of research do not prove conclusively that the inhalation of excessive radon or its daugher products cause lung cancer, indications point to this as a possibility, particularly radium A and radium C1 of the daughter products. The threshold limits set by law in most uranium producing states are believed to be safe. In a few years, when tests and data now in the process of collection by interested state officials and laboratories is complete, these limits may be found to be ready for revision. Studies such as these take time. At present, the limits that are used are based upon estimates. The permissible limits of exposure to radon and daughter products include a large safety factor. It is considered that a good supply of fresh air delivered to the working places, adequate dust control, the sealing of unused or abandoned workings, the removal of mine water which is generally contaminated and a safe waiting period after blasting, will hold to a minimum the dangers from this source. There are, of course, problems accompanying each of these procedures. For example, the ventilating of untimbered raises and bringing fresh, uncontaminated air to the working places may be a problem. However, a good mining man can solve these problems as they apply in each particular operation. From the information available at the present time, the daughter products containing polonium and emitting alpha radiation, may be a health hazard. Fortunately, the half life of most of the daughter products is short, however, radium D has a half life of 22 years and presents a problem of contamination in the storage of old tailings. So we can see that failure to comply with the accepted good mining practices may have harmful effects on the health of miners. It is gratifying to note the interest in this potential hazard by the officials in the uranium ore producing states, who are making extensive studies and keeping records of the men who work in this type of mining. This all provide information necessary for preplanning safety. By contrast, little has been accomplished to control the injuries and deaths from some other factors connected with most underground mining operations. The Tenmile Range is a north trending zone of high relief within the central Colorado porphyry-mineral belt, located between Leadville and Breckenridge. (Figure 1, the Index Map of the area surveyed.) The Climax mineralized zone is located at the southern end of the range on the northwest side of the Continental Divide. This portion of the total area surveyed will be discussed in detail today. A fixed wing aeromagnetic survey was flown over this range and mineralized zone in the fall of 1957. The survey was run as an experiment to see if a useful geophysical tool could be applied in the exploration for similar type deposits. The purpose of this paper is to describe the results of this survey and the approaches used to aid in the interpretation of the total intensity data.

It is argued that it is more likely that any peroxide that had been formed would have been generated from residual oxygen in the nitrogen-flushed system than from the oxidation of water.The formation of hydrogen peroxide by finely divided pyrite had been reported by a number of authors (Borda et al., 2001; Borda et al., 2003; Cohn et al., 2006; Schoonen et al., 2006; Schoonen et al., 2010; Jones et al., 2011; Javadi Nooshabadi et al., 2013). That hydrogen peroxide is formed in the presence of oxygen in solution can be comprehended from wellestablished mechanisms. Pyrite in aerated solution is known to oxidize by an anodic process that is coupled with the cathodic reduction of oxygen (Holmes and Crundwell, 2000). The latter process has been shown to occur through the formation of hydrogen peroxide (Biegler et al., 1975; Ahlberg and Broo, 1996). The pH dependence of cathodic oxygen reduction at other sulfide minerals, including chalcopyrite (Biegler et al., 1977; Rand, 1977), implies a similar mechanism at these surfaces."
