Gold chlorination which will be presented in this paper is limited entirely to the use of gaseous chlorine in a fluidized bed reactor at elevated temperatures in the absence of aqueous water. The only water used in this process is that which is used in scrubbing the effluents. Low temperatures are defined as those below 500°C. All experimentation for this paper was carried out on a laboratory scale, with all calculations extrapolated frpm this. Some of the data is drawn from work with other projects which have been operated at pilot and larger scale.

Epithermal gold exploration in the last decade has developed useful models for exploring previously overlooked ore districts in Oregon. In eastern Oregon, disseminated gold occurs in epithermal deposits that have been pervasively silicified and brecciated. Many gold prospects staked since 1980 are in fluvial and lacustrine sandstone and conglomerate deposits. Clay alteration products and disseminated pyrite may be present. Vein filling calcite and thin to thick quartz veins are common. Late stage quartz forms pseudomorphs after calcite in many prospects. Arsenic, mercury, and gold are geochemically anomalous but silver is usually not. The epithermal deposits are located in part of the Deer Butte formation or equivalent units. Exploration criteria include the presence -of Deer Butte formation or equivalent units and northwest structures cut by north-south basin and range structures.

Calculation of consistent steady-state mass balances in operating metallurgical plants and pilot plants is of interest for many reasons. In general, enough data can - and should - be collected to overdefine the system, i.e., permit calculation of nonmeasured quantities via more than one path. In such cases, resulting steady-state metallurgical mass balances rarely close due to sampling, analysis and/ or instrument error. Indeed, determination of a valid calculational sequence for complicated process flowsheets with multiple recycle streams can prove quite difficult. Here we present and discuss a method that has proven useful in analysis of numerous grinding circuit flowsheets of varying-degrees of complexity our technique requires only a consistent process flowsheet with appropriate associated data and arbitrary numbering of streams and equipments. Process topology and user data are decoded to yield a set of "search" or base variables and a set of "calculated" variables in solids, water, particle size and splitter parameter space. This procedure greatly speeds subsequent actual mass balance adjustment calculations since perturing certain variables (e.g., a solids value) does not require recalculation of other variables (e.g., the water balance). Finally, internal search and calculated variables are back converted to User units and used in a Sum-of-Squares criterion. Global minimization of this performance functional then yields a consistent mass balance in a least, squares sense. Weighting factors of choice can be used. Examples illustrate application of these methods.

In response to concerns voiced by local, state, and federal agencies and various environmental groups, the Central Florida Phosphate Industry and various governmental agencies have been investigating methods to accelerate the consolidation of waste clays generated during phosphate washing and beneficiation processes. The objectives of research efforts have been to reduce the storage volumes required for clay waste, accelerate reclamation and to return the land to approximate pre-mining topography. Government and industry research to accelerate waste clay consolidation has evolved two general methods: gravity thickening and chemical flocculation. Gardinier, Inc. one of the phosphate mining companies, evaluated the use of synthetic (polyacrylamide) flocculants as an alternate waste clay thickening method in response to mining conditions encountered at their Fort Meade Mine and the proposed North Hardee County extension of the Fort Meade mine (Figure 1). After considerable research and evaluation, the Alsthom-Atlantic Clariflux Super-flocculation method was chosen by Gardinier, Inc. as a method to seriously consider for use at their Fort Meade mine.

It was in 1982 that the first SK-80 flash flotation machine was introduced at Hammaslahti concentrator in Finland to produce a final grade copper/gold concentrate. Since then the size and number of flash flotation units has steadily developed with the SK-240 being introduced in 1984 and the SK-500 unit in 1990. To date over 130 units have been installed worldwide many of which have been used to maximise the recovery of precious metals such as gold and platinum by preventing overgrinding in the grinding circuit prior to flotation. This paper briefly describes results achieved at several major gold mines in Australia and overseas that operate large flash flotation cells.

The only previous attempt to use a tunnel boring machine in the rock formations encountered in New York City was unsuccessful. However, technology has been developed since then which made a new attempt a practical proposition. Nine thousand feet each of 8'6" and 11'0" diameter tunnels were driven in Manhattan schist using Jarva TBM's together with 1100 ft. of the smaller diameter driven conventionally in Inwood marble and earth. (1) The selection of tunneling method was largely based on the need to avoid community reaction and hazardous tunneling conditions where the larger diameter tunnel passed beneath residential structures in poor condition in seamy and blocky rock. Experimentation with cutters and cutter mountings indicate that good cutter life and ease of change are available. It was found practical to use unusually large muck cars for an efficient muck disposal system. Conventional tunneling was successfully executed beneath a subway station whose invert was less than seven feet above the crown of the tunnel. Attempts at chemical consolidation and dewatering were unsuccessful in the earth section which was completed under compressed air.

Biological processes have recently become more attractive in hydrometallurgy and mineral processing due to their lower operating costs, potential for processing low-quality ores and flexibility. Adhesion of microbes and their metabolic products can modify the particles to render them hydrophobic or hydrophilic. Such modifications of the surface properties are used in flotation and flocculation of minerals. Microbes are also able to dissolve different precious metals from their ores. In this paper, the role of microbes and their metabolic products as surface modifying reagents in extraction processes is discussed. In addition, the ability of certain microbes to adsorb toxic metal ions or to degrade toxic chemicals discharged by industries is examined.

On June 16, 1982, Rio Blanco submitted a request to the US Minerals Management Service for a suspension of operations under its federal oil shale lease. The company also wanted a five-year delay in the requirement for further minimum royalty payments and a five-year extension of the primary lease terms of 20 years. The request was granted in late July in the midst of yet another slump in oil shale activity. Rio Blanco holds one of four Federal oil shale leases that were granted under the Interior Department's Prototype Oil Shale Leasing Program in 1974. That year the DOI offered for lease six federal oil shale tracts, two each in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. The leases in Colorado and Utah were granted for substantial bo¬nus bids as shown in Table 1, but the Wyoming tracts had no takers. In the eight years hence, no oil shale has been produced commercially. Indeed, the prospects for successful oil shale development have fluctuated widely, continuing a 60-year- old cyclical pattern in the fledgling industry. The prototype program was developed and initiated while this infant industry struggled to begin anew, without the benefit of any federal oil shale leasing regulations, or any history of federal oil shale leasing at all. Permanent regulations were not required because the effort was limited and designed to provide the foundation for any future leasing program. Section 21 of the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920, a Nov. 30,1973 Federal Register notice, and the leases themselves constitute the legal and regulatory framework for leasing and developing prototype oil shale tracts. The prototype leases contain some unusual provisions including installment payments of the bonus bids, credit of early development costs against payments due the government, adjustment of royalty rates according to regional crude oil price fluctuations, and unusually extensive and detailed environmental stipulations. Several of the provisions were intended to provide incentives for early development and financial penalties for failure to develop. The requirement for minimum royalty payments in lieu of actual production royalties beginning in the sixth year of the lease falls in the latter category. After the sixth year, the required minimum payment is increased east year through the 15th year by an increment equal to that due in the sixth year. The minimum royalty then remains the same through the final five years of the primary lease term. Minimum royalty is calculates on a different production level for each prototype lease, based on the quantity of 125 L/t (30 gal/st) shale estimated to be recoverable from. each tract by room-and-pillar mining. That mining system was selected for reference as the only proven extraction method for oil shale at that time (early 1970s) The minimum royalty (production) rate was calculated for each tract by direct comparison of its estimated recoverable 125-L (30-gal) resource to a hypothetical tract containing 1.9 Gt (2.1 billion st) of recoverable 125-L (30-gal) shale. For the hypothetical lease tract, the minimum production for the sixth year was calculated to be 3.2 kt/d (3,500 stpd), increasing by a like amount each lease year through the 15th to a daily production rate of 31.7 kt (35,000 st). Under this formula, the hypothetical lease tract would yield $16 million in minimum royalty payments over the 20-year primary lease term if there were no production, no development credits taken, and no adjustment of the royalty rate due to fluctuation of regional crude oil prices. The production rate of 31.7 kt/d (35,000 stpd) was a somewhat arbitrary figure that was considered, in the early 1970s, to represent a minimum size for a commercial oil shale operation. A production rate of 7.9 dam3/d (50,000 bbls/day) soon supplanted that smaller mine production figure as a rule of thumb for the minimum size for a commercial facility. The proportional relation-

Based on the findings within their report to Congress, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it had decided not to regulate mining wastes under the hazardous waste regulatory program. However, they found that some mining wastes are hazardous and may be causing environmental damage. Cyanide wastes from heap leach operations were included in this group. In evaluating the effects of cyanide use in mining one finds a significant lack of information on the fate of cyanide in soils. Cyanide attenuation and degradation of soils is important, because ground water is a major potential pathway for cyanide contamination. There is a strong potential for cyanide to be removed from solutions as it migrates through soils· by volatilization, chemical reaction, adsorption, oxidation and biological processes, but no definitive investigation has defined these mechanisms adequately to be able to predict the fate of cyanide in soils.

Introduction The impact of computers on individuals and businesses increases each day. And the mining industry is no exception. The growing number of short courses, symposia, and feature articles in journals on the subject of computers is indicative of the developments and interest in their application to mining. Given this interest and the growing importance of computers, a legitimate concern is the computing background of graduating mining engineers. Based on a sample survey, this paper presents the current status of computer education in Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology (ABET)-accredited mining engineering programs in the US. Specific topics addressed include hardware and software available to students, integration of computers into curricula, concerns of mining educators, and historical and anticipated trends in computing education. Methodology Nine of the 19 ABET accredited mining engineering schools (as published in the SME-AIME Guide to Minerals Schools) were surveyed. Interviews consisting of open-ended questions were conducted with a knowledgeable faculty member from each of these schools. This was done to obtain an overall view of computing in mining engineering programs. The intent was not to evaluate nor compare individual schools, so a complete census was deemed unnecessary. The minimal deviations between the responses to the subjective questions reinforces the credibility of the sample as being representative. Results Hardware Most of the mining engineering schools polled had access to hardware on three scales - mainframe computers available university wide, minicomputers available in the college or department, and microcomputers available at all three levels. Without exception, each school had access to mainframe and microcomputers. Minicomputers, however, were not available at every school. The mainframe computers have been in place the longest. The predominant mainframe currently on campuses is the IBM model. Mainframes were once the essence of all applications. But the improved availability and capabilities of smaller machines have afforded users a viable alternative. The increasing practice in education of assessing charges for time used on the mainframe - as opposed to no charge for time on the mini- and microcomputers - makes use of the smaller machines attractive. Conversely, much of the mining engineering software is only operational on mainframes. Sometimes this restriction exists because the requisite speed or storage inherent in the software can only be met by the mainframe. More often, however, it is because the software was developed when mainframes were the only machines available, and it has not yet been adapted to run on a smaller machine. At the schools polled, many mining engineering problems that are well suited to microcomputers are being solved on mainframes simply because microcomputer software is not available. Minicomputers are available at the department or college level in many mining programs. DEC is the most popular make. Often, the minicomputers were installed to alleviate the inconveniences of attempting to access and use an overcrowded mainframe, to avoid being charged for time used on the mainframe, and to meet the needs of a specific research project. The minicomputers are currently used much more for research than for teaching applications. Therefore, minis are seldom used by undergraduate students. Microcomputers have become extremely popular at mining schools within the last five years. Generally, some form of computing policy or strategy was established near the time the first microcomputers were purchased. This was formulated in part to ensure consistency, or at least compatibility, in the type of machines acquired. An adaptive process control system was installed in Cortez Gold Mines Mill #2 Grinding Plant in Nevada. The installation, commissioning, and testing of the system took approximately 80 manweeks, but final test results show that the system paid for itself through increased throughput within two weeks of commissioning. Both crisp and fuzzy rules are used in the expert rule base which is also integrated with continually adapting neural network models. The expert rules and models are used by predictors, and optimizers to allow the control system to provide optimum process performance under continually varying feed conditions. The selection, installation, rule and predictor configuration, and statistically verifiable testing of the control system in the Cortez Gold Mines Mill #2 Grinding Plant is described in the paper.

1. INTRODUCTION Roadheaders have a shadowy origin - probably in Eastern Europe - but were introduced to Europe and the West by the importation of a Russian PK3 machine by the National Coal Board in 1961. A number of features rendered this type of machine an attractive tool for coal mine operators: its flexibility of operation, its combined cutting and loading ability, the opportunity it provided of making any shape of roadway, as well as its ability to cut some rocks. Encouraged and sponsored by the National Coal Board, the development of roadheaders was taken up in Great Britain, notably by Anderson Strathclyde and Dosco; in Europe, predominantly in numerical terms by Voest Alpine and Paurat. Over the 24 years since the importation of the first PK3, evolutionary development has taken place to the extent that machines are now available in many forms up to 120 tons in weight. Machine design has altered, partly as a result of increased power requirements and partly in line with the use of a ripping or a co-axial head. However, the basic concept remains: a boom containing a motor and transmission gear, with a driven cutting head at its extremity and capable of universal movement urged by hydraulic rams mounted on the boom turret and on the machine deck. Generally, the turret, hydraulic powerpack and all other necessary equipment are mounted on a chassis, which contains a discharge conveyor, the whole being carried on caterpillar tracks so that a complete machine entity is provided. Planned tunnel projects with advanced geotechnical investigations are more frequently being suspended because of changes in funding, politics, or local priorities. Some of these projects are ultimately canceled, some decelerate and stall, some resume after a short pause, and some restart after being mothballed for several years. The restarted project often differs at least slightly from the predecessor project in terms of alignment and design concept. This paper describes approaches to evaluating the quality and completeness of previous geotechnical investigations for a re-activated project, considering technological advances as well as changes in regulatory requirements, contracting approach, and site conditions which may have taken place in the time since the project was suspended.

For many years the explosives industry was a technological enigma: it was at the 'cutting edge' of some technologies and in the backwaters of others. For example, for at least the past 85 years, the industry routinely measured time to one-millionth of a second for determining the detonation rate of explosives. At the same time, however, formulations were usually hand-written in 'formula books,' such as the alchemists may have done. Also, due to the fact that the equipment had proven to be safe, many of the mixers and packing machines in use until recently were those patented in the 19th century; improving efficiency was not worth the possible risks that might be encountered. In recent years, the wide availability and portability of computers and their adaptation to specialized applications have revolutionized the explosives industry, much as it has many others. With the advent of the water-based emulsions and slurries (water gels), and the necessity to design totally new processing and delivery equipment, the opportunity arose to apply modern techniques to many aspects of the business. Table 1 lists some computer applications currently in use by explosives manufacturers and end users. The use of high-tech production controls, equipment design aids, field measurement devices and other computer applications is so pervasive in the industry today that any brief article such as this must be considered only as a broadbrush overview of the subject.

Computers have been used in the minerals industry for about 30 years and, in a few cases, longer. With the explosion of microcomputing during the past 10 years, computers have changed how many minerals producers go about their work. What computer usage trends are active in the minerals industry today, and what can we expect in the future? In general, computer usage is accelerating. Engineers and geologists are becoming increasingly "application literate." Soft¬ware is increasingly oriented to how people work. User interfaces have improved, so most users need to know only a mini¬mum of system commands and structure to work with a computer. Most industry professionals know how to use word processing and spreadsheet pro¬grams. AutoCAD appears to be the drawing program of choice. One reason is availability of training and add-on programs for earthwork, mapping, contouring, etc. Another frequently cited reason for using CAD is the ability to quickly make changes to a map or design, as compared to hand methods. Management is moving toward greater acceptance of computer usage. Computers do not need workman's compensation ... even though they may get sick and take a few days off! Computer hardware used in most minerals-producing companies is strongly personal-computer based and likely to remain so. The 486 personal computers are inexpensive as compared to workstations and provide the power and speed to run most applications in minerals industry engineering offices.

INTRODUCTION The Advisory Conference on Tunneling held in Washington, D.C. in 1970 under the auspices of the organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) forecast that $54 billion would be expended by member countries on underground construction in the 1970s. Construction activity since the Conference indicates the forecast may have been conservative. Statistics in the report indicated a vast increase in tunneling projects for mass transit, hydro-electric development, railroad tunnels, sewer and sewage retention reservoirs and water tunnels. Development of equipment is required to meet the demands for high speed excavation and provide tunnel driving systems with maximum efficiency and capability to sustain high speed advance rates. BORING MACHINE CAPABILITY During the last decade, use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) has increased. Where ground conditions and limits of machine design criteria permit, circular tunnel sections are either the only section , or an alternate sections specified in the documents: a TBM is either required or is an acceptable alternate means of tunneling. BACKGROUND The steel and iron ore industry has had a long history of an adversarial relationship with its union and workforce. The Empire Mine during its first 40 years of existence was no exception. The "we-they" mentality went hand-in-hand with the normal by-product of an adversarial relationship, grievances and arbitration. This relationship was considered the norm and it was not until the late 1970s that consideration was given to changing this relationship. At this time the industry was involved in a fight for existence and the economic pressure demanded increasing productivity to lower cost. The challenge to survive highlighted the fact that an adversarial relationship was not conducive to attaining the needed gains in productivity. The first formal attempt to change the way we worked came in the 1980 Labor Agreement which provided for the opportunity to utilize Labor Management Participation Teams (LMPTs). LMPTs were established at the Empire Mine and they functioned for a couple of years. The teams spent most of their time working on creature-comfort issues and steered clear of dealing with productivity issues. Mine shutdowns had occurred in Michigan resulting in large layoffs, and the union was trying to add jobs and was not supporting teams that could increase productivity and eliminate jobs. When the 1986 labor negotiations began, the local union pulled their support of the LMPT process. Other initiatives were negotiated over the years to foster a change in the culture but, as with the LMPT program, they did not produce the desired culture change. It became abundantly clear: you cannot negotiate a culture change.

Igarape Bahia Mine, which is currently the largest gold producer in Brazil, belongs to Companhia Vale do Rio Doce - CVRD and is situated 250 miles south of Belem, state of Para, Brazil. It came into operation in 1992 with the startup of the CIP plant, fed with high grade ore, presently at 3.4gAu/t. The ore is totally oxidized, containing extremely fine particles of free gold. The ore is soft and low cyanide consumer, with a maximum work index of 12kwh/sht. In 1993 a Heap Leaching Plant was set into operation, handling low grade ore of · 1.s g Ault. The Heap Leaching Plant has undergone two major expansions. In 1994 its capacity was raised from lMtpy to 2,2Mtpy and in 1998, with a thorough remodeling of crushing operations, it was raised again to 3.5Mtpy. The CIP plant, which was originally designed with a capacity for l. lMtpy of ore, was expanded to a 2.2Mtpy capacity in 1994. Presently, the CIP plant accounts for most of Igarape Bahia's total gold output, with approximately 220,000oz per year. Igarape Bahia's annual output is around 360.000 oz. Over the last three years, work has been intensified to improve performance of both processes, aiming at maximizing productivity of the two industrial plants. Reduced costs and increased revenues have been given a special emphasis in the unified improvement program. Cost · reduction has involved developing methodologies to rationalize consumption of materials and inputs, while increased productivity has been given top priority as a means of generating increasing revenues. Thus, all of the improvement and development efforts have had a common goal: to increase operating income.

At the RETC 1979 in Atlanta/Georgia it was reported about the beginnings of the Hydroshield system and the first site experiences. Since that time over 10 miles of tunnels in various diameters have been built with that system, and the discussion of the two most interesting projects will be the main topics of this paper. AURELIA TUNNEL, ROME In Rome, the railway system is going to be completed and modernized. Therefore, it is necessary to tunnel through the Roman hills. Part of the new railway system is the Aurelia Tunnel, located some 100 feet below the famous Via Aurelia Antigua, close to the Vatican. The double track railway tunnel has an internal diameter of 9.44 m and a length of 2.410 m. It runs through completely differing soil conditions. Mining was the first economic activity carried out in Cuba, by the colonial conquerous, i.e. gold extraction from rivers and use of asphalt to calk their ships; however, due to different historic reasons only a limited development took place in this field during the colonial domination. During the republican period beginning early in this century, other interests lead to a larger scale exploitation of some known deposits.
