Underground voids present a unique geotechnical engineering challenge. This paper will address materials and transportation mediums that are typically used for backfilling underground voids with native material. After reviewing traditional backfill and transportation methods, this paper will explore the advancing technology of foam transportation and the advantages of using this technology for transporting fill materials into underground voids to backfill them with Liquid-Sand. The paper will also review the benefits that Liquid-Sand brings to these applications and highlight specific case studies in which foam transportation has proven effective and provided cost-effective, environmental benefits.

Heat transfer to a fluid flowing through a rough duct has been shown by many researchers to be a function of surface roughness. The effect of roughness asperities on the duct surface is to turbulate the fluid as it flows through the duct, increasing frictional pressure losses and convective heat transfer rates, and also increasing the surface area per unit length available for heat transfer. These factors combine to increase the total costs to the mine in terms of refrigeration and fan power requirements. A measurement system designed to automate the collection of tunnel roughness information and based on an infra-red timed pulse laser has been developed at the Royal School of Mines in London. The system allows accurate, high resolution digital recordings of tunnel surfaces to be made in two or three dimensions. Software for analysing the data has been written, and the description of a complex surface via single numerical term has been explored. A relationship between the numerically measured surface roughness and the pressure loss of the ventilating air is being investigated with a view to establishing an alternative method of describing tunnel roughness. The paper describes the roughness measuring technique developed and the analytical techniques explored so far.

"Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project is located in South West Sri Lanka. This project, among many components, involves a 14 km headrace tunnel in very hard and abrasive igneous rocks. The tunnel is under construction by a 4.4 m diameter double shield TBM. The headrace tunnel has already reached 5km milestone and has passed through some reaches of tunnel in very strong intact rocks with no joints. Low penetration at high thrust load has caused frequent stoppages for cutter change leading to low utilization and advance rates due to low cutter life. The original machine was dressed with 27, each 432 mm (17 inch) diameter, 19 mm (3/4 inch) tipped disc cutters. However, various cutter diameters of 432-457 mm (17-18 inch) and cutter tip widths 13 to 19 mm (0.5-0.75 in), have been tried to see if cutter life and penetration rates could be increased. This paper will review the history of the project, the geology of the site, along with TBM performance and cutter life. It will focus on frequency of different cutter failures encountered in various ground conditions. Also, results of using variation of cutter diameter and tip width to cope with the hard rock conditions and their results in increasing machine productivity will be discussed. This allows for better understanding of parameters controlling disc wear/life and leads to better cutter management for more efficient operation of hard rock TBMs in similar conditions. INTRODUCTION The Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project (UOMDP) lies in the south-eastern part of the central highland region of Sri Lanka. The Multi-Purpose Project Of Uma Oya is planned to convey water from Uma Oya to Kirindi Oya Basin for hydroelectric energy generation includes Puhulpola RCC Dam on the Uma Oya river, Dyraaba RCC Dam on the Mahatotilla Oya river, a conveyance tunnel from Uma Oya to Mahatotilla Oya (L=3750m), a long feeder tunnel from Mahatotilla Oya to Kirindi Oya river. The feeder (or power) tunnel Lot consists of a 15554 m long headrace tunnel (HRT), the surge shaft and tank on the upstream of the vertical shaft, a 650 m vertical shaft with steel lining, and an underground powerhouse and a 3650m tailrace tunnel (TRT)."

The Port Radium mine of Eldorado Mining and Refining Limited, located on Great Bear Lake only a few miles from the Arctic Circle in north-western Canada, is the oldest uranium producer in Canada, The first concentrates were produced in 1933 and except for a period between 1940 and 1942 the mill has operated continuously. Although it is located in a remote area, and compared to more recent mines in other areas is a small tonnage operation, nonetheless the relatively high grade of the Port Radium ore has permitted operation to date on an economical basis. The mill process at Port Radium includes the original gravity concentration mill, and since 1952 an acid leaching plant which treats tailings from the gravity mill and tailings recovered by dredging of residues from underwater dumps in Great Bear Lake. The pregnant solution from the leach plant has to date been processed through aluminum reduction to yield an intermediate grade uranous phosphate-arsenate precipitate, Because of the rising costs of the aluminum reduction process, and its sensitivity to ore composition, Eldorado became interested in possible application to Port Radium of the solvent extraction processes of which we were obtaining increasing information in the latter part of 1954 and during 1955.

Abstract. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, as part of its effort to maintain an adequate supply of minerals and metals to meet national economic and strategic needs, is conducting research on the pneumatic recovery of coarse mica. A system of crushers, screens, and zigzag air classifiers is used to concentrate coarse liberated mica particles from mica ore and from the waste tailings of abandoned mica operations. The plus 0.21-millimeter-size mica is effectively recovered by this method. The mica concentrates produced contain over 90 percent mica. The method recovered up to 78 percent of the mica in the samples. As a dry concentration method, the pneumatic-beneficiation technique may be advantageous in areas of limited water resource.

Underground mining alters ground condition, producing a disturbance in the ground water regime. The level of disturbance is dependent on the local hydrology, geology, and type of mining. Serious damage is sometimes caused by ground water- when mine roofs collapse, causing subsidence. Subsidence is either unplanned, where pillars are inadequate to provide support; or planned, where total extraction occurs over a large area. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the effects of mine subsidence on the ground water hydrology in the Warrior Coal Basin. Underground openings resulting from coal mining activities have been the most significant cause of subsidence problems in the Warrior Coal Basin, the main source of coal in Alabama. This problem will be even more serious in the future because 19 of Alabama's 24 billion tons of coal reserves are classified as an underground source (Tolson, 1982).

Precambien in age, the phospate deposit under study which outcrops to the south forms a synclinal consisting of only one mineralized horizon. The synclinal strikes SSW/NNE, dips from 30 to 60 NNE and is about 5 km wide. The deposit has been explored by : - trenches and pits about 50 m apart in the outcropping area ; - core drill holes forming lines perpendicular to the outcrop. These lines are about 100 m apart. On each line, the drill holes are about 50 m apart The phosphate layer is clearly visible and has then been defined from the geologicia1 description of drill hole logs. The layer has been divided into two parts : a very rich, altered part at the hanging wall and a poor part displaying opposite physical characteristics, i.e. a fresh and hard rock. With open pit mining in view, the deposit has been divided into a 3-dimension network of blocks, each block measuring 50 X 50 X 100 m. The tonnages of rich and poor ore, PO25, MgO, Si02, CaO and R2O3 grades and the tonnages of barren waste at the hanging wall and the footwall have been calculated for each block. Given the dip of the phosphate layer ranging from 30 to 60° and its relative thickness (between 10 and 15 m), it was impossible or inappropriate to carry out direct calculation by 3-dimension kriging : too many neighboring blocks to obtain sufficient date and impossibility to draw up the morphology of the layer.

In order to simulate the operation of coal extraction machines, a portable workability instrument has been designed. Initially, the tests were performed with the instrument on modeling material, which were followed by in situ tests on coal in underground mines. The peak and mean cutting resistance and work done to cut a unit length of coal were determined for coal as well as modeling material. In addition, rebound strength and dynamic penetration tests were also performed in situ. On the basis of the cutting characteristics of coal, a "Workability Index" has been developed and its role in the judicious selection of coal cutting machines has been discussed. With reference to prior works and the strength characteristics of coal, it was found that the coal plow may not be suitable for the seams under investigation and the shearer seems to be the only choice. It has been observed that peak cutting resistance and the "Workability Index" in the case of coal as well as modeling material depend upon compressive strength. The peak cutting resistance exhibited certain dependence upon the Schmidt rebound hardness and dynamic penetration strength of coal in situ.

As it becomes more and more apparent that our nation must place a great deal of reliance on coal as an energy source in the coming decades, prospecting for new reserves Un Missouri and other states in the Western Interior Region is increasing. As more and more of the known reserve becomes committed to existing or planned projects operators will be forced to look beyond the fringes of existing coal fields for additional reserves. Perplexing geologic problems invariably confront all prospectors and are particularly bothersome to those new to a particular area. It is the purpose of this paper to alert prospective operators to geologic problems likely to be encountered and to offer guidance in the recognition and solution of these problems. Particular emphasis is placed upon geologic structure and washouts. Other geologic problems have been discussed in a previous paper.

"The International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) held its 42nd General Assembly along with the 2016 World Tunnel Congress (WTC) April 22-28 in San Francisco, CA. The event was co-organized by the Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA). This was the first time the event has been held in the United States in 20 years.As cities demonstrate strong needs in tunnels and underground spaces for public transportation, subway stations, hydroelectric infrastructures and other underground infrastructure needs, the WTC 2016 provided the 2,319 attendees from around the world a unique occasion to discover the latest state-of-the art innovations in urban planning and underground construction projects in the United States and worldwide.The Congress, held in lieu of the UCA’s North American Tunneling Conference, included an exhibit that attracted 226 exhibitors in 298 booths. The exhibit had on display the latest in technical equipment and services from some of the largest and best companies in the international tunneling industry. The exhibit hall was also the place where participants were able to interact with the authors of the 168 posters and receive answers to various topics directly concerning civil engineers: innovative procurement processes, cost and risk management, contractual methods, BIM technologies and examples of innovative underground infrastructures built worldwide. And the technical program included 353 technical presentations – 185 podium and 168 posters.What is ITA?ITA-AITES is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that promotes greater use of underground space as a key instrument in sustainable development. The treatment of materials for the recovery of the precious metals imposes many processing and environmental challenges. Sunshine Mining and Refining Company has developed hydrometallurgical technology for recovery of values from refractory precious metal materials. At Sunshine, the industrial focus of these processes has been for the direct recovery of silver without cyanidation. However, recent work has indicated that these technologies can provide a means for treating complex, refractory gold concentrates. This will be the focus of this paper. The practice of pretreating ores and concentrates to make them more amenable to cyanidation is becoming more common. Several pretreatment options for sulfide concentrates containing gold include roasting, bio-leaching, direct pressure oxidation and nitrogen species catalyzed pressure oxidation. The industrial use of nitrogen species catalyzed pressure oxidation has been limited to the Sunshine refinery where its focus has been for the treatment of silver concentrates. Much of the reluctance, outside of Sunshine, to use this type of technology may be based on the perception that high costs are associated with using nitrogen species (e.g. nitric acid, sodium nitrite) to leach. Also, the use of nitrogen species catalyzed pressure oxidation on an industrial scale is unfamiliar to most metallurgical professionals. A summary of pressure leaching processes which utilize nitrogen species as a catalyst is presented in Tables 1 and 2.

Increasingly, exploration geology seems to be growing into a practice overly separated from production geology, yet the eventual purpose of exploration is a producing mine. To help in the search for new deposits, exploration "lessons" will be drawn from the papers given at the Fall AIME Applied Geology Symposium. In addition, examples will be re-emphasized to show how early observation of matters now routine to mine work (for example, hydrology, rock mechanics, oxidation state) can help increase the effectiveness of exploration.

By 1968 Cyprus Pima was milling 38,000 tpd of copper ore using a conventional flowsheet consisting of three stages of crushing rod mills and ball mills. A 15,000 tpd expansion was put on stream late in 1971 using primary crushing, semiautogenous mills, and ball mills. Identical ore is treated in both concentrators. This paper shows the weight and life of each individual liner for each crusher and each mill over a four year period from 1974-1977. Power and media consumption are shown for the same period and a comparison is made between the two reduction methods.

Ore sorting is an emerging technology in mineral processing that can produce a significant impact on the total mining and processing economics. The technology is capable of preconcentrating an ore based on differences in the mineralogical characteristics, which can include color, brightness, transparency, size, shape, density or near-infrared response. The current practice of conducting an ore sorting test typically requires large amounts of materials to be sent to a commercial testing facility, which is expensive and time-consuming. Here, we present a novel method to simulate commercial ore sorting on a laboratory scale using a rare earth ore.

Because of the nature of the breakage in the Barmac vertical spindle impactor, the 80% reduction ratio is very small, so that when an energy efficiency is calculated from Bond's method, it appears to be very low. However, the product size distribution contains a high proportion of fines. It is argued that the production of these fines accounts for the high energy consumption, and Bond's method is modified to account for this, by considering the crusher to be, effectively, a number of smaller crushers in parallel, each having a different reduction ratio.

A panel discussion on carbon-in-pulp processing of gold and silver ores was one of the highlights of the 1981 AIME Annual Meeting in Chicago. The session generated considerable interest and discussion among panelists and the audience. For those unable to attend the panel, the program was recorded and the discussion appears in this two-part report. The panel was co-chaired by Robert S. Shoemaker, vice president of San Francisco Mining Associates, and Laurence D. Hartzog, principal engineer with Bechtel Civil and Minerals Inc., San Francisco, CA. Panel members included: George Potter, consultant, Tucson, AZ; Kenneth B. Hall, metallurgical superintendent, Homestake Mining Co., Lead, SD; and Donald M. Duncan, resident manager, Pinson Mining Co., Winnemucca, NV. There have been several types of carbon-in-pulp adsorption vessels in use, such as the Dorr-type agitator, the simple propeller agitated tank, the Pachuca tank, and, lately, the draft tube-type of agitated tank. Which one of these is best and why? Potter: On the selection of the most appropriate adsorption vessel, there is a considerable difference of opinion that stems largely from the fact that every ore is different. The mesh of grind, the pulp solids, and the apparent viscosity of the pulp as caused by its clay content and chemical conditions all differ. The traditional Dorr agitator with the slow speed center sweep and either peripheral or center column air lifts has worked quite well on the finer grinds of all minus 65 and probably 70-80% minus 200 mesh. Pachuca tanks have also been successful and they may be capable of handling a coarser feed than the traditional Dorr tank. One uranium mill, for example, handles minus 28 mesh sandstone ore in a Pachuca. The most recent development and one that commands consideration is the draft tube agitator in which there is a turbine which closely fits inside a draft tube. Velocity in the tube is carefully calculated to avoid undue shear and thus abrasion of the carbon. The objective in all cases, of course, is to mix the granular carbon, which is typically 6 x 16 mesh, very gently but thoroughly in a slurry with minimum carbon abrasion. I do not know that there is one outstanding choice just yet and I have been unable so far to get information on C-I-P service for ore grinds as coarse as 35 mesh. Duncan: The major advantage of draft tube-type is the ease of startup. At the Pinson plant we installed draft tube-type agitators but it is too early to quote experience with them. We also haven't operated long enough to determine just what our carbon loss is. The advantage, of course, in the draft tube design is that it requires only about one-third the horsepower input of a conventional agitator. If it has no other advantages, it has that. Hall: The type of vessel most suitable for C-I-P adsorption depends on the type of ore treated and the prevailing operating conditions. In most cases, a deep tank with turbine-type mechanical agitator and low speed tip velocities would be satisfactory. Turbine-type impellers give a positive type of agitation which assures optimum ion contact and reduces short circuiting. Thorough aeration is possible with an air sparge properly located. A mechanical agitator can easily be started up after an outage, but it is usually necessary to drain and wash out a Dorr rake-type or Pachuca before restarting. The turbine-type impeller requires more power, but maintenance costs are negligible if rubber covered impellers are used. Carbon losses are minimal. In smaller plants, Pachuca type agitators provide adequate aeration and agitation. Bob Polak, Occidental Minerals (from the floor): Mr. Hall, you favor the mechanical-type agitator with the preface that the proper design is critical. Could you elaborate on this for us? Hall: The most important thing is low tip speed to prevent carbon attrition. I think the impeller should be sized so that you get a good sweeping action toward the bottom of the tank, across its bottom, up the sides, and back to the center. The advantage of the draft tube is that you get a more positive agitation and you probably get improved aeration too. Polak: Do you know of anyone using an upflow mechanical agitator rather than a downflow unit? Hall: I think that Bob Wilson at Custom Equipment has designed one where he has located the sparge directly beneath the impeller. The air bubbles are broken up by the impeller as the slurry passes through it. The slurry flows upward, outward, down the sides, and, again, back to the center of the tank. I don't know that any tanks of this design are in commercial use. Hans Von Michaelis, Randol International (from the floor): A question to any of the panelists on flat bottom versus conical bottom Pachucas. Hall: I would say the conical bottom would be most suitable in most cases. Some plants have experienced problems with flat bottom Pachucas in that they have a tendency to sand in on the sides of the tank so only the center of the tank is active. Duncan: With our draft tube tank we placed an inverted cone in the center of the tank bottom and blanked off the bottom comer around the circumference of the tank to facilitate movement of the pulp. Other than that, as far as conical bottom tanks are concerned, I'm generally opposed to them because of the cost and height differential. Larry Kramer, Kennecott Minerals Co. (from the floor): Mr. Duncan, you mentioned that the draft tube-type could be agitated with about one-third the horse-power applied to a conventional propellor agitated tank. I have trouble trying to pin down that kind of number. Could you give a bit of rationale as to why that mechanism has a lower horsepower requirement? Duncan: I think it has to do with the fact that below the propeller you have straightening vanes. The pulp, which is flowing vertically downward, is turned and flows upward again without any recirculation. You have an inherently less horse-power requirement in that type of tank. The one-third horsepower requirement is a number I obtained from Lightnin, which supplied us with details of the draft tube. There is probably much more recirculation with a conventional impeller type that is wasted motion. Potter: Last week I saw some agitators in South Africa with short draft tubes and actual turbine-type impellers. This plant was handling 200 kt of ore per month. The tanks were flat bottomed, and the agitation appeared to be quite satisfactory.

Approximately forty years ago, the military services began a realistic investigation of the problems involved with the replacement of high pressure gaseous systems with liquid oxygen systems. The program was temporarily discontinued because of numerous State-of-the-Art problems. Ten years later, interest in the liquid oxygen breathing concept was revived. Initial testing of this concept was completed in 1946. The ensuing years have seen the general acceptance of many cryogenic breathing systems for airborne applications. The inherent features of weight savings (approximately 70%) and space savings (approximately 80%) make it very desirable for high performance military aircraft. A typical aircraft system consists of a storage container with appropriate integrated control valving (the liquid oxygen converter), a heat exchanger, breathing regulator, and oxygen mask. Normally the liquid converter is located in the aircraft wheel well for easy access by ground crew personnel and the breathing regulator is mounted in the cockpit where the pilot can connect his oxygen mask. An aircraft system such as this will provide the pilot with eight hours of breathing oxygen after a 24 hour standby period. Early in 1960, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration sought a means of providing a cooling system for their personnel involved in fueling the rockets used in the space program. While fueling rockets N.A,S.A, personnel wore a completely enclosed butyl rubber suit and were susceptible to heat prostration. The world's population by 2000 A. D. may approximate 6.5 billion and the United States' 304 million. South Asian population increases between 1970 and 2000 A. D. will be triple the projected population of North America. Such anticipated dramatic and probably traumatic increases in world population yield grave concern for the standard of living in the world and the United States. The people of the United States currently consume 32 percent of the world's energy and similarly large percentages of the world's mineral raw materials. With only 6 percent of the present world's population and slightly smaller percentage by 2000 A. D., much expanded world-wide production of energy and raw materials will be required to maintain even a standstill living standard. A minimal 2 percent increase per year in the standard of living in the United States and a 4 percent increase elsewhere in the world, beyond the demands of the estimated population increases, suggest the magnitude of the increased need for energy-mineral raw materials and the possible crises the world will face in these areas by 2000 A. D. Mineral engineers and scientists with broad educational backgrounds will be required in greatly increased numbers to help alleviate, and possibly avert, expected energy-mineral raw materials shortages of the next millenium. Explorationists, mineral engineers, commodity economists, environmentalists, city, county, state, and federal mineral materials planners and coordinators, and metallurgists will be among those most needed. AIME membership in the second century of the Institute's history will contribute directly to this personnel pool.

Commercial production of heavy minerals from plant tailings streams is undergoing study by Syncrude Canada Lrd. When tar sand from an open pit mine is processed and up- graded to synthetic crude oil, heavy minerals can be recovered from the extraction circuit and can be upgraded to provide concentrates of zircon and titanium minerals. The titanium minerals concentrate consisting of a mixture of ilmenite, leucoxene and rutile, could be utilized as recovered or could be upgraded to synthetic rutile. With the construction of further synthetic crude oil plants in Western Canada a large reserve of heavy minerals will become available for utilization.

As man's need for minerals continues to grow and as the known mineral deposits become depleted, it may be expected that these increased demands will result in greater exploration for additional deposits and at continually increasing depths below the earth's surface. As labor and material costs continue to rise, the need for more economic material handling will be emphasized. The quest for heavier payloads, safely moved at faster speeds from deeper mines, will be vigorously pursued. Strenuous efforts are, therefore, being made in the wire rope industry to develop ropes with greater strength-to-weight ratios than presently available while maintaining the dependability and long life being received from the conventional rope manufactured today. For many years, high quality rope wire has been manufactured from rods of selected steel compositions. Carefully-controlled wire drawing combined with proper heat treatment has resulted in high quality wire and wire rope throughout this period. Refinements in the rod produced from specially-selected high carbon steels combined with the latest improvements in wire drawing and heat treatments have made it possible to manufacture higher strength rope wire of uniform composition and structure that is suitable for use in Special High Strength wire rope.
