The use of pneumatic methods for measuring interface level in flotation columns is analysed. It is shown that errors can vary over a wide range (e.g. 40 cm. in one industrial application) depending on bubble size, particle size, bubble loading, liquid hold-up and bulk slurry density. Accurate measurements (+ 5 cm) can be obtained by measuring intensive properties of the froth near the interface. Methods based on the measurement of temperature and conductivity are described and analysed. Control of the interface level using these measurements subject to various disturbances is demonstrated.

The Montreal metro Blue Line Extension toward the northeast consists of the construction of five new underground stations. The project includes 6 kilometers of the tunnel which will be constructed using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). In line with the commitment to integrating sustainability best practices, Envision verification is pursued this project. The Envision reference framework was developed to cover all the sustainable development aspects of an infrastructure project and each phase of its life cycle (planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance, and end-of-life). As a part of this endeavor, low-carbon concrete and shotcrete mixtures are proposed for the linings of TBM and SEM tunnels as well as stations and auxiliary structures. The CO2 emission of the low-carbon concrete and shotcrete mixtures were compared with their typical mixtures and the total CO2 emissions reduction related to the tunnel lining is determined. The study is of strategic significance for achieving emission reduction in the tunnel industry.

The global market and manufacturing of sulfide collectors will be detailed as well as the trend towards using increasing amounts of specialty products. The use of Total Quality Concepts for laboratory and plant evaluations of new products will also be discussed. Research in the 1990's for sulfide collectors will need to focus not on the development of new chemical species but on the application of the new technologies that have already been developed.

Highland Valley Copper currently mines two low-grade ore bodies, Lornex and Valley. The partnership was formed in 1986. As a cost reduction measure, it was decided to use an in-pit crushing and conveying system to deliver the ore from the Valley Pit to the Lornex mill 3 km (1.8 miles) away and 175 m (575 ft) above the pit rim. The system uses two gyratory crushers that feed a series of conveyors to transport up to 130 kt/d (143,000 stpd) to the main stockpiles. This paper describes the performance of the in-pit crushing system as it is currently configured, as well as its evolution to date and future planned moves.

The use of clay-based granules as carriers for pesticides dates back to the early 1940s. It now represents a business conservatively estimated at between 180 and 270 kt/a (200,000 and 300,000 stpy) in the United States alone. Prices for these materials typically range from $110 to $165/t ($100 to $150/st). Aside from economic and specific target pest efficacy advantages, the use of clay granules as pesticide carriers also delivers a number of environmental benefits, which are reviewed. Topics discussed include drift control (vs. liquid sprays), mobility (in the environment), worker safety and transportation (spill) safety.

The flotation mechanisms of various flotation machines are briefly reviewed. The counter current column flotation mechanism is described in more detail. The merits of counter current column flotation include; improved metallurgical performance in terms of grade and recovery, effective cleaning action in the long cleaning zone with a blanket of fresh water, smaller floor space required due to the vertical configuration of a flotation column, low capital, operational, and maintenance costs due to the absence of moving parts and finally, easier flotation control due to the simplified circuit. The results of column flotation studies on various minerals and coal at CANMET are discussed. Some of the industrial experiences with the Canadian flotation column on various sulphides, oxides and coal are also presented.

The effect of pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, realgar and arsenopyrite on gold dissolution in cyanide media was investigated. The cyanidation of synthetic gold ores in the presence of various concentrations of sulfides was studied under constant experimental conditions. A mineralogical analysis of the minerals was performed. The leaching kinetics were determined. The negative effect of sulfides on the gold dissolution rate varies with the sulfide mineral and decreases according to the following order: realgar > pyrrhotite > chalcopyrite > pyrite > arsenopyrite. The chemical characterization of gold and sulfide minerals surfaces using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was undertaken to identify the mechanisms involved. XPS analysis showed that a passivation layer of sulfides, arsenic or iron compounds might form on the gold surface as a result of the dissolution of the sulfide minerals. Surfactant-based bactericides are able to control acid formation in sulfidic materials such as pyrite and sulfidic ores, thereby helping to abate acid rock drainage. Bactericides are used in the following two ways: as periodic or continuous spray treatments for the prevention of acidification of material actively handled and moved and in controlled-release form for reclamation. Site-specific bactericide treatments are designed for active sites and reclamation. Results from two active coal refuse sites show that acid production can be reduced by 88% or more. Results from reclaimed sites show that bactericide treatment can be more effective than the addition of alkaline materials such as limestone and can reduce acid production from 3,500 to <30 ppm. The controlled-release-pellets treatment outlasts the life of the pellets, as shown by a study of a site now 10 years old A single treatment sets up a change in site microbiology to replace acid-producing Thiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria with heterotrophic bacteria and creates a stable site without the need for further treatments. A secondary beneficial effect of bactericides is on revegetation, and biomass from treated areas is almost 10 times that from areas not treated with bactericide. Depending on the application, bactericide treatment can be cost effective upfront and certainly long-term, compared to the perpetual water treatment that could be required, even after productive use of the site is completed

The design of solvent extraction plants has been generally based on the assumption of steady operating conditions in both the settler and the mixer units. However, recent experience in both large and small plants has shown this not to be the case. Mixer transients include start up aqueous locking and partial phase separation in secondary mixers, which both lead to reduced plant capacity or overflow of upstream mixers. Analysis of the hydraulic pressure profiles has generated new design methods to eliminate the effects of the partial or complete phase separation. Changes to the method of specification and selection of primary and secondary mixers have been made to eliminate the onset of partial separation during operation. The observation of settler operation has shown that it is also a dynamic process, even under "steady-state" conditions. Four transient phenomena have been identified that lead to internal circulating flows, poor disengagement of fine secondary haze and erratic and high entrainment levels in the discharges. A, first approximation analysis has shown that there are significant pressure differentials within settlers, and these change along the length and with the phase separation rates. A technique to control the effects of these transients was developed that allows plant performance to be improved beyond "standard" expectations. As opposed to graphics applications in medical sciences and mechanical engineering, computer imaging of the subsurface faces a severe problem of data shortage. Most graphics softwares include an interpolation algorithm aimed at producing slick graphic output, irrespective of the attribute being interpolated, the quantity and quality of the data available, and what the map is intended for. It is suggested that the power of modern computers be also used in providing representations of the subsurface that accurately reflect actual spatial variability and the large variety of soft information available beyond hard data. Since any subsurface representation is uncertain, a measure of that uncertainty should be provided which can be used for risk analysis.

The Hardgrove grindability test, commonly used in coal characterization, was conducted on 13 Mississippian carbonates from Kentucky, Tennessee and Illinois. The results demonstrated that the grindability increases with a decrease in the Si02/(MgCO3+CaCO3) ratio, with fine-grained and petrographically-complex stones having lower grindabilities. Also, the relationship between the Bond work index and Hardgrove grindability is significant.

The strongly skewed grade distributions and the need to estimate the local recoverable reserves in a selective mining environment are the two problems that ordinary kriging (OK) cannot easily handle. With the recent introduction of the non- parametric, distribution-free technique of indicator kriging (IK), the above problems can be solved. This paper describes the result of performance evaluation of IK in an open-pit gold-silver deposit. For performance evaluation, the predictions of local recoverable reserves using IK were compared with the actual reserves based on blasthole information. The IK estimator, although a bit optimistic (or overestimating), performed very well in predicting the total recoverable ounces of gold from each panel on a test bench. The OK estimator was also used to try to predict local recoverable reserves, by treating each panel as either waste or ore, depending on the panel&apos;s average grade. Under this criterion, OK was found to be quite biased and pessimistic (or underestimating).

Diamond wire rock cutting is the most widely used technology in carbonate stone quarrying owing to technical performance and block face quality. Interest is also growing for siliceous deposits. This paper deals with the problem of optimum wire utilization under restrictions regarding a set of variables and parameters. A computer program of general applicability has been set up with the aim of studying the most suitable combination of technologies and the effect on the technical and economic results of bench geometry, overall quarry yield, market -stone value, quarry size as well as the quantity, productivity and price of human and material resources and their organization in the elemental working cycle. Two quarrying problems are considered as significant instances a granite and a travertine quarry. The results are illustrated and discussed.

Analyses of jointed, cracked, and fractured rock masses are needed in a variety of applications, including estimates of reduced elastic modulus for damaged rock, estimates of permeability changes as a function of stress changes, and estimates of relaxed regions due to excavation. A numerical model of a jointed rock mass, the compliant joint model, was used to study the response of a jointed rock mass near a circular excavation. The joint constitutive model was linear elastic in shear and nonlinear elastic in the relationship between normal stress and joint closure. Initial stresses were geostatic and representative of stresses in a granitic jointed rock mass approximately 300 m deep. The joint properties were based on values that are representative of joints in granite. The results from numerical simulations were compared with analytical results for stress near a circular opening in an elastic medium having reduced Young&apos;s Moduli to simulate jointing effects on the rock mass. The differences in response between the two models resulted from the differences in the symmetry of elastic properties, the shear modulus of the continua, and the constitutive relations in the two models. For example, the non- linear anisotropic elastic continuum described by the compliant joint model resulted in vertical stress concentrations near the side of the circular opening that were 25 percent higher than the vertical stress concentrations in an isotropic linear elastic medium. The equivalent Young&apos;s Moduli in the vertical and horizontal directions of the compliant joint continuum deviated by as much as 50 percent from the values assigned to the modeled region prior to excavations. The perturbations of the elastic Young&apos;s Moduli extended to distances of two to three radii from the opening.

In 1996, O&K Orenstein and Koppel Inc. announced big plans to increase its presence in the US mining market. Even though the company, a part of Ger- man-based O&K Mining GmbH, has been in the United States for about 100 years, it has lived in relative anonymity. That despite being one of the largest makers of hydraulic mining shovels and excavators in the world. The plan must be working. In the 14 months through December 1996,O&K increased its sales to surface mines and quarries in the United States by 250&apos;70, according Rolf Weber, company president. "In the next five years, we anticipate total revenue from our US operations will grow from the current $50 million to $200 million," he said. "Toward that end, we have concentrated our efforts on the supply of reliable, high-output machinery and responsive service after the sale."

INTRODUCTION In the past decade, the international coal trade has been undergoing a period of gradual change. This change will continue through the remainder of this century until by the year 2000 the international coal industry will look very different from the industry which existed in the early 1970&apos;s. The industry which will emerge from the thirty year period of change (1970-2000) will be different in many ways. -The volumes of coal transported will be much larger. - The primary type of coal traded will be steam coal rather than metallurgical coal. - A much broader group of countries will be participating in the trade both as suppliers and as consumers. - The trade will be dominated by a relatively small number of large producing and trading companies. - The coal mined for international shipment will be primarily surface- mined. – The United States will play a decreasingly important role in international coal trade. In the course of this paper I propose to address three questions which are crucial to the formulation of an understanding of the changes outlined above : (1) Which supplier nations will be most successful in the international metallurgical and steam coal trade in the next decade and a half? (2) What emerging trends will shape the international coal trade in the 1980&apos;s and 19901s? (3) Where are U.S. producers likely to fit in this scheme of things? As a background to my remarks, I should note that what follows is based on five years of work in a consulting capacity on coal supply and demand issues worldwide. Although in the course of this work I have had occasion to develop mining and transportation cost figures for all of the countries discussed below--both my own and those obtained from coal producers--it is apparent that success in the marketplace can be determined in some instances by considerations other than costs. Nevertheless, my comments today about international competitiveness will be dominated by cost considerations; there are, after all, not many markets that reward the high-cost producer with success. Let us begin by establishing some criteria for success in the international coal market and then compare some of the producer nations to some of these criteria. The criteria are: - Low delivered cost, - Good quality coal, - The producer&apos;s partnership in a joint mining venture with an importer or a consumer of coal, - The producer&apos;s international business orientation and commitment to penetrating the market, - The producer&apos;s reliability as a supplier, and - Political pressure exerted by the producing country on consumers.

The paper describes a simplified method to chemically modify the surface of industrial mineral fillers. Four industrial mineral samples were taken from feedstock of commercial fine grinding operations. These samples were ground in bench scale ball mills and in the presence of various organic solvents. The ground products were measured for particle size distribution, surface area, surface chemistry by oil absorption and degree of organicJminera1 bonding. Where appropriate, the ground products were compared to commercially available surface modified, industrial mineral fillers.

Booster fans have been extensively used in underground mines throughout the world. In the United Kingdom, S. Africa, Germany, and other countries, many non-coal and coal mines employ booster fans. These fans help to reduce air leakage, to provide an improved flow distribution and to reduce the overall cost of mine ventilation. Although booster fans have not been used in coal mines in the United States, a recent survey indicated that many coal mines would install booster fans if they were allowed to do so. With the inclusion of coal mines, the use of booster fans in underground mines is expected to increase substantially in order to maintain air quality and quantity requirements. Several techniques are used, with varying degrees of success, in determination of booster fan locations in an underground ventilation network. These techniques include linear programming, critical-path crashing, CPM together with cutset operations, the out-of-kilter method, and simulation techniques. This paper provides a brief comparison of these techniques, and reports on ongoing research for an improved methodology for the determination of booster fan locations.

According to the increasing importance of boom type roadheaders in tunnelling essential problems occuring in the application of these machines are dealt with. Based on a chart including the various stages for decicion finding the excavation method of underground cavities, both the technical limits and economic criteria are discussed in order to determine the range of applicability of roadheaders. Giving examples-the numerous developments in the fields of pick and cutting technology, performance data of boom type roadheaders in hard rock, safety technology and increase in the machines&apos; degree of utilization, research and development of VA is illustrated. Two topic operation examples show partial aspects of the various tendencies of development.

The fishhook effect, wherein the recovery of fine particles in the underflow increases with decreasing particle size, has been observed in hydrocyclone classification. A systematic study was carried out to determine the factors affecting the recovery of very fine particles to the underflow. Attempts were made to identify factors, i.e., design and operating variables, that affect the size at which this phenomenon occurs. Experimental results show that the sizes at which the fishhook effect occurs is mainly a function of feed size distribution and solids concentration and is less dependent on the design variables.
