Consolidation grouting from the surface prior to mining a shaft is commonly performed to reduce groundwater inflows to a manageable rate. This paper describes the inflow reductions obtained within dolomite and limestone formations at several shafts and chambers due to grouting programs for the Milwaukee Water Pollution Abatement Program. The resulting inflow reduction factors are compared to results reported in the literature for other projects. Post-grouting pump tests are also evaluated as an aid in grouting assessment. Important considerations for estimating shaft inflows from pump test results are discussed. These considerations include loss of grouted mass during mining and influence of blasting and rock features on grouting effectiveness. This information should be helpful to design engineers and contractors who need to estimate inflows after pre-excavation consolidation grouting has been performed.

The need for a separate ventilation department within the management team was recognized by the management of U. S. Pipe and Foundry before the company was purchased by Jim Walter Corporation in January, 1970. Because the coal beds of the deep underground coal properties owned by Jim Walter Resources lay 1300 to 2200 feet below the surface, efficient mine ventilation practices are essential through shaft openings varying from 16 to 22 feet in diameter. The extremely high methane gas quantity indicated to be in the coal bed because of the depth of cover and documented by various U. S. Bureau of Mines tests and demonstrated by early mining proved the need to implement this early management decision. At U. S. Pipe and Foundry mine ventilation was a function of the Mining Engineering Department with ventilation personnel assigned to the mine receiving their day to day work assignments from the mine manager or mine foreman. At Jim Walter Resources, the General Manager - Ventilation reports to the Senior Vice President, Mining Engineering, who reports directly to the President, Mining Division, Figure 1 (Company Organization Chart). Position descriptions are static; however positions are dynamic and consequently the degree of emphasis of specific duties and responsibilities change depending not only upon the aptitude of the individual performing the job but also upon his ability to meet the needs of his supervisors; and ultimately upon his ability to react to the economic forces directing our society. The following describes the duties and responsibilities of the General Manager - Ventilation, Figure 2.

The trend in underground room-and-pillar coal mining is to employ remote-controlled, continuous-mining machines and extended cuts to depths of 12 m (40 ft) or more. This system of coal extraction, adopted by more than 435 mines, can create additional worker safety hazards. To address the ground-control-related safety hazards, a combination of statistical analysis and numerical modeling was used. Initially, the reported roof-fall incidents and fatalities were reviewed to delineate the ground-control hazards. Then, the application of the coal mine roof rating (CMRR) for estimating safe extended-cut depths was evaluated. Finally, computer modeling was completed to predict roof displacements during extended-cut mining. This paper describes the results of these studies and their impacts on the safety of extended-cut mining.

During the 1970's geostatisticians were often accused of not paying sufficient attention to geologic features in the computerized generation of ore reserves. Unfortunately this charge was all-too-often justified and the results of such studies tended to be oversimplified and failed to reveal the full potential of computerized reserve estimation and geostatistical methods. There were some notable exceptions to this trend. Techniques were described that paid a great deal of respect to the geologic characteristics peculiar to certain deposits (Rendu J-M, 1984; Barnes T. E., 1982). At Gold Fields several techniques have been developed for handling the geologic characteristics of orebodies for reserve estimation purposes. These have developed over time and the evolution of their adoption has been a reflection of our own learning experience from the practical application of computerised reserve estimation on many precious metals deposits.

There is a large economic driving force associated with improving metallurgical performance in mineral processing plants using process control. Because of this and other benefits, control systems of the future will develop towards more sophisticated user friendly computer based systems that use powerful software analysis and control techniques. Auto-tuning, adaptive control and process models will gain expanded use because of their transparent availability to the system designer. Control of individual unit operations will be optimized and coordinated through expert systems that monitor economic conditions and management directives and direct operations accordingly. Plant areas, considered cost centers for years, will be integrated into plant-wide control systems for economic control and optimization. New control hardware, process sensors, control strategies and software development tools will be presented, as well as an overview of the economics driving the continued development of advanced process control systems.

The adsorption behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions on activated carbon was studied. The gold adsorption capacity of the activated carbon and the recovery efficiency were examined. The parameters affecting the adsorption of gold on the activated carbon included temperature, agitation speed, the concentration of cation and anion and the concentration of ammonia. It was found that the maximum gold adsorption was about 10 kg/t of carbon. The recovery of gold by the adsorption, from ammoniacal solutions was found to be dependent upon the initial gold concentration. Under experimental conditions, a gold recovery of 98% was obtained after 120 hrs of adsorption. It was also found that the initial adsorption rate was relatively fast, when compared to the entire adsorption period. The apparent activation energy for the adsorption was determined to be 15.8 kJ/mol. It was believed that the kinetics of gold adsorption on the activated carbon was controlled by pore diffusion.

Three studies conducted at the University of Utah relating to the effect of scrubbers on face airflow patterns, the resulting dust exposure of operators and the development of a throat scrubber for continuous miners are summarized in this paper. The first study involved full-scale laboratory tests to determine the potential dispersion patterns and transport of dust at a continuous miner face, using different ventilation configurations and a scrubber. Concentration maps were developed and potential exposures at operator positions were examined. The second study involved the development of a 3-D numerical model to predict airflow patterns generated by a scrubber at a continuous miner face. The model was designed to evaluate the role of various face parameters on airflow patterns at a miner face and to complement the full-scale testing. The third study involved the design and fabrication of a low profile hydraulically powered continuous miner throat scrubber. The scrubber uses three hydraulic motors and small diameter fans to draw about 3000 cfm (1.42 m3/s) of air and uses a flooded bed scrubber to filter dust particles.

The paper presents mathematical model of concealed fire. We consider a porous medium (goaf, coal fissures) through which air flows. The set of equations is constituted by transient, two dimensional mass, momentum and energy balance equations with sources describing oxygen loss and heat generation caused by coal oxidation. Paper presents several examples illustrating the phenomenon of spontaneous heating in goaf areas behind longwall faces.

The ability to accurately predict the sound field is essential for the estimation of probable worker noise exposure. For this reason, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is researching computer- based analytical techniques specifically geared to calculate the spatial variation of sound pressure levels within common mining environments. Initial modelling efforts describing the user interface, the simulation of energy acoustics, and the graphical representation of sound pressure levels are presented in this paper.

Lateritization is a surface and near-surface process enhanced by a humid and warm climate and by good drainage. It closely follows the development of the regional landscape. The cyclic landscape development on the Guiana Shield is accompanied by a progressively thicker and more evolved laterite mantle the older, and hence in most instances the higher the planation level. The known, economically interesting bauxite and aluminous laterite eposits of the Shield are restricted to the remnants of the oldest of the Cainozoic planation levels (level I1 and 111).

Ore reserves are based on sampling developed by drilling programs. Correct choices concerning the type of drill to be used, depth of drilling, hole orientation and sample spacing are not only critical to the accuracy of the ore reserve but to the cost in time and money of the project. Appropriate interpretation and use of geologic information can significantly enhance the ability to make these decisions effectively. Geologic characteristics of mineralized rock that affect drilling and sample quality include: rock quality, openness, water content, mode of gold occurrence, internal gold distribution and grain of mineralization. Each of these characteristics and sources of data about them are revuewed, then related to the various drill program options. Finally, some procedures for checking the validity and appropriateness of the selected options are reviewed.

Oily and particulate befouled waste water discharges are a common industrial problem. Removing these water bourn emulsions from process discharges become increasingly important for both recycled and discharge water streams. Low cost, efficient and easily maintained systems are important. This paper evaluates design factor of such a water cleaning system -a trough filter. Sampling has evolved at two large underground limestone mines as conditions and product requirements have grown tougher over 100 years of mine life, requiring innovative techniques to insure delivery of high purity limestone. Sampling insures delivery of consistent product to customers at the lowest possible cost. Statistical considerations have evolved from simple data collection to predictive and process capability analysis. Sample methods include borehole samples, face (using a proprietary face-sampling device), and total plant feed automatic, process, and final product sampling. Lessons learned, while keeping costs at historically low numbers, include the importance of geological models, exploration drilling density, face sampling, and blending of ore.

This paper presents a method for three-phase foam preparation recipe optimization. The pressurized foam is injected into porous media of gob area for prevention and fighting of SPONCOM fires. Mining, perhaps more than other industries, has been under pressure to achieve higher productivity, while reducing costs and environmental impacts. This has encouraged a move toward large-scale operations and greater integration and automation of systems. Mechanization is being used increasingly to raise production and reduce labor requirements. Yet, while transportation, ventilation and other activities have benefited from this trend, mechanization of rock excavation (for development and production) has lagged. The switch to a mechanized excavation system can be complex, requiring a thorough study of operational and cost benefits to be successful. To justify the high capital cost of mechanical mining equipment, production rates and the true costs of machine mining must be accurately estimated. To evaluate the cost effectiveness of mechanical mining for a particular operation, the total production cost (capital and operating) must first be estimated. This requires a reliable estimate of the production rate of the candidate mechanical excavator. Previously, the variable nature of rock caused performance prediction of these machines to be more an art than a science. Additionally, some of these machines are highly sensitive to operator skill. They all depend on their backup systems. The effects of interaction with the overall mining operation can be difficult to forecast. And a new system must surmount psychological barriers before it can become truly operational.

INTRODUCTION The increased activity in the Aus­tralian gold industry over the last decade has resulted in a concomitant increase in the use of sodium cyanide, with a projected consumption of 80,000 tonnes in 1991. Growing environmental awareness by government, industry and the public has generated increased interest in the fate of cyanide near gold mine tailings dams and has highlighted the lack of basic knowledge in the area, particularly for Australian conditions. The mineral industry shares a particularity- heterogeneity-with the other primary industries exploiting nature such as agriculture, fisheries, and forestry, which may not be found in the secondary industries, In the mineral industry heterogeneity is evident both in the raw material, the ore in situ, and in the working conditions. Mining engineering, which encompasses the tools for designing mine production systems, is mostly an assembly of the other branches of engineering and applied science. The assemblage's goal is to arrive at an optimal production system. As such, mining engineering is similar to systems engineering. The technique for the development of systems-mine production systems or mining operations -is operations research with its succession of activities: observations, modeling, experimentation, and verification. Comparisons among alternative systems are highly desirable during the development phase of a mining operation as well as during later phases where modifications, ameliorations, and expansions are carried out on the existing system. The role of the independent consultant in systems design and development lies in the collection and breadth of experiences from modeling and model verification in other operations, which he can add to a new system's development and thus in- crease its credibility with management.
