A project to evaluate the suitability of point Load strength tests for testing and classifying coal measure rocks for coal mining application was initiated by Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET). A summary of this study with emphasis on the important findings is presented in this paper. The instrument as used in this study is a Robertson Research Rock Strength Index Log. Because of the variation in the correlation ratio between uniaxial compressive strength and point Load strength index for hard rocks and soft rocks it was decided to establish this corre¬lation initially on cement concrete specimens specially prepared for this purpose following ASTM specifications. These specimens are expected to represent soft rocks and at the same time would be of uniform quality. Once a general trend of this correlation was established tests were performed on coal and rock samples from the sub-bituminous and bituminous coalfields in Canada. The most important results may be stated as follows: (i) Generally, the common value of the ratio between the uniaxial compressive strength and the point load strength index ranges between 8 to L4. (ii) The Robertson Research Rock Strength Index Log proves to be quite suitable for testing sandstone, siltstone and some coals from the bituminous coalfields but problems have been experienced when testing weathered samples or samples from the sub-bituminous coalfields. (iii) In some cases tests were successful if Larger samples from weathered zones or from sub-bituminous coalfields were used. However, a magnified load gauge for 0-3KN or 0-5KN is expected to be the best solution for soft and weathered rocks in most of the cases. Some mudstones and some rocks from weathered zone do not appear to be suitable for these tests. This aspect of the study is still under investigation. (iv) Deterioration of rock properties due to weathering has been determined through tests on samples collected from weathered and unweathered samples.

Following a methane ignition in the active panel of a longwall coal mine, the affected panel was successfully isolated from the rest of the mine. This allowed for the remainder of the mine to return to regular operation, and the conventional practice of having to seal the portals for a defined period of time was avoided. After the affected panel had remained isolated for a regulatorily mandated period of time, it was reopened in preparation for longwall face recovery. As it was not possible to move the shields from their existing positions to facilitate the installation of recovery mesh prior to shield recovery, alternative methods had to be considered to stabilise the gob and minimise flushing, thereby improving operator safety. The objective of the paper is to show how stabilisation of the gob was achieved during shield recovery, thereby minimising flushing, and improving operator safety. Phenolic foam was chosen and injected from between the shields into the gob behind them. This is a technique that has been used to great effect in Germany, to a lesser extent in Australia, but not knowingly to date in the United States. To ensure nothing was left to chance and thereby guarantee the project?s success, the procedure used in Germany was employed, down to the application of equivalent hardware, which was sourced through the North American supplier.

Mining economics is such that too conservative in safety will result in a considerable penalty in mining cost. However, initial planning and design of a mining project often must be done without complete information. The assurance of economical and safe mining is thus difficult. This study is focused on the improvement of the mine design associated with Zhaoyuan Gold Mine in P.R. China as more information becomes available. Attention is given to the selection of backfill structures. Based on a proposed practical finite element model, a design, which is believed to be not only reliable but also cost-effective, is recommended for further mining operations in this mine.

In recent years, Peabody Coal Company has enjoyed a great amount of success using roof trussing as a secondary support system. Since 1975, over 180,000 trusses have been installed in 12 different Peabody mines with varying geological conditions. Projections from Peabody, and throughout the mining industry, indicate a continuous growth in the trussing principle for roof control. Peabody's primary supplier has sold over 1,000,000 trusses to 50 different mines throughout the country. (1) Roof trusses provide an improved means of controlling difficult roof conditions which, in turn, improves worker safety and mine production. Since the original development of the truss, (2) the only major modification to the trussing procedure has been the addition of the resin point anchor system in the mid-70's. The resin point anchor was the catalyst needed to provide a reliable anchor and create acceptance of the roof truss by both management and labor. Peabody began using trusses in their mines in 1975. For the first few years, most of the truss effort was geared toward determining proper anchorage, spacing, and gathering historical data. In recent years, Peabody's activities have centered on the development of improving trussing procedures. Through monitoring and trussing activities, a number of areas of improvement have been found.

"Many factors can be responsible for coal mine roof falls including, mining geometry, stress conditions and local geology. In the Illinois Basin coal mines, roof instability is commonly attributed to the low strength of the immediate roof, which is also moisture sensitive. Recently, in order to understand the mechanisms of roof instability, numerical modeling has often been the preferred ground control analysis tool. Since roof materials can exhibit significant spatial variability, such modeling results may not represent every section of the mine. At the same time, it is not feasible to carry out numerical modeling for the full range of geological and mining conditions possible at a mine. Operationally, it is more convenient and highly practical to have a simple map that depicts the expected roof conditions, determined through either complex numerical models or simple empirical analysis throughout the reserve area. In this paper, a case history is presented that shows how a combination of simple empirical analyses of geologic data and past ground control experiences at a mine can be synthesized into a roof stability map, which can then be used to forecast future ground conditions. The usefulness of such a roof stability map will be examined in terms of the predicted and actual ground conditions encountered over a period of more than a year after the map was created.INTRODUCTIONA roof fall, which can result in fatalities and lost work time, is considered to be one of the most severe ground control hazards in underground coal mines. In general, there are many factors responsible for roof falls, including mining geometry, stress conditions and local geology. In the Illinois Basin, roof falls are commonly attributed to the weak nature of immediate roof rocks, and some superficial falls may be initiated due to moisture sensitivity. Some unstable areas also occur when the immediate roof is highly laminated.Numerical modeling is a useful tool used to understand the mechanism of a roof fall by incorporating site-specific parameters. In the past, numerical modeling has been used to explain the mechanism of roof falls as well as simulate· roof falls and cutter behavior, but such work had been strictly site-specific (Gadde and Peng, 2005; Ray, 2009). Because of the restrictions imposed by the input parameters, numerical modeling results cannot represent the entire mine. In the real world, mining conditions vary from place to place, and even in a single panel, modeling results valid at one site may not apply at another nearby site. At the same time, due to the lack of input data pertaining to rock characteristics and in-situ stress variations, it is not practical to carry out numerical modeling for each local area of the entire mine site. In addition to these difficulties, mine operators prefer simple tools to understand the ground conditions at their mine sites. One simple and commonsense based tool is the roof stability map. A stability map not only synthesizes the geologic and stress analysis data empirically, but it can also be used to predict future ground control issues at that mine. Because of this practical appeal, stability maps are more likely to gain mine operators' acceptance and be used in their planning operations. In this paper, a case study is presented on the development of a 'Roof Stability Map' that was principally used for roof fall prediction for a mine in the Illinois Basin."

The world's most popular method of longwall mining requires multiple entry systems for the panels. In contrast to this mine layout the roadways in German coal mining are used for advanced mining from the rock mechanic point of view or are even re-used by a second panel. This procedure of roadway use is presented within this paper using a 3D visualisation software tool. In the previous conferences in Morgantown several papas had addressed the basics of rock mechanic background, planning tools and variants. This paper gives a practical case study for reuse of a roadway in a German coal mine. The heading and the use of various alternatives are compared under the aspect of efficiency and costs. Within the comparison the specific requirements and benchmarks of German coal mines are taken into consideration. The costs for a multiple entry system and first of all the development rates that can be achieved with common road heading systems are compared with international layout alternatives. A prospect includes a discussion of pro and con for various development methods. Devices are given due to this prospect if and how multiple entry systems are applicable to German coal mines. The paper gives an initial point for international comparison and is a base for further discussion.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed the coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) to aid in ground control. This paper describes the application of the CMRR at four coal mines operated by a major U.S. coal company. The mines are widely separated geographically, and cover a wide variety of geologic conditions and mining methods. The study found that the CMRR was a useful predictor of roof performance. In mines where the CMRR varied, and other parameters held constant, roof falls were associated with low CMRR values. Important similarities in roof performance were found in mines with similar CMRR values, despite radically different geologic environments. The analyses also indicated that statistics can be used to evaluate ground control performance. For these mines, a "roof fall probability" can be estimated from the CMRR and the intersection span. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Spokane, WA, have collaborated with three Western longwall coal mines in an ongoing effort to develop technologies that will aid in providing safe and stable working areas. The goal of the research described here is to develop a stress monitoring system that will provide immediate information to mine managers for making daily safety decisions as areas of poor ground are mined through. Initial work has focused on answering preliminary questions regarding the reliability and use of stress change patterns. Research is concentrated on monitoring horizontal stress because horizontal stress is transmitted over long distances through stiff strata, thus allowing an extended length of entry to be monitored. This paper presents an explanation of the concept, key results from field tests at two mine sites, and a proposed process for imple¬menting a monitoring system. System design layouts, instrument use, data collection and interpretation methods, and processes to present findings to mine staff are described. Additional validation and correlation with actual failure mechanisms are required before this approach can be recommended at ongoing operations. How¬ever, initial results indicate that this approach shows promise in mines prone to bumps and roof falls associated with large stress changes. In particular, analyses of measured changes in horizontal stresses appear useful.

The Coal Mine Root Rating (CMRR) was first presented at this Conference nine years ago. Since Its Introduction, the CMRR has been incorporated into many aspects of mine planning. including longwall pillar design, rout support selection, feasibility studies. and extended cut evaluation. It has also become truly international, with involvement in mine designs and funded research projects iii South Africa. Canada. and Australia. The purpose of this paper is to bring the minim community Up to date with recent improvements and applications of the CMRR. The must important new development is a streamlined process for determining the CMRR from exploratory drill core. Just three types of information are Jaw required: Fracture spacing (or RQD) Uniaxial compressive strength for axial Point Load Testing) Diametral Point Load Testing The moisture sensitivity adjustment has also been changed, and new research has related the immersion test to slake durability. Most recently, the CMRR has been implemented in a computer program. which can be obtained from NIOSH free of charge. The program facilitates calculation of the CMRR firm either underground or drill core data. Values from ninny locations can he saved in a single file. and an interface with Autocad allows CMRR contour plots to he integrated 11110 mine planning.

High-extraction mining of coal and other stratified minerals has a predictable effect on the surface and subsurface. Impacts on ground waters in overlying strata and on surface waters, that are associated with overlying sequential zones of collapse, fracturing, aquiclude, constrained strata, and surface disturbances can be anticipated. Since first quantified around 1979 in Bureau of Mines sponsored contract research work and others (and often adopted by state regulators), with zone extents based upon multiples of mined seam height of 24 to over 60 for the fractured zone, much new data have become available. In examining the sources of data and the methods and intents of the researchers of over 65 case histories, it became apparent that the strata behaviors were being confused with overlapping vertical extents reported for the fractured zones and aquiclude zones depending on whether the researcher was interested in water intrusion into the mine or in water loss from surface or ground waters. These more recent data, and critical examination of existing data, have led to the realization that the former "Aquiclude Zone" defined for its ability to prevent or minimize the intrusion of ground or surface waters into mines has another important character in increasing storage of surface and shallow ground waters in response to mining with no permanent loss of waters. This zone is here named the "Dilated Zone." The existence of the dilated zone explains the ratios of up to 60 times the mined thickness. Surface and ground waters can drain into this zone, but seldom into the mine, and can eventually be recovered through closing of dilations by mine subsidence progression away from the area, or filling of the additional void space created, or both. A revised model has been developed which accommodates the available data, by modifying the zones as follows: ? collapse and disaggregation extending 6 to 10 times the mined thickness above the panel ? continuous fracturing extending approximately 24 times the mined thickness above the panel, allowing temporary drainage of intersected surface and ground waters ? development of a zone of dilated, increased storativity, and leaky strata with little enhanced vertical permeability from 24 to 60 times the mined thickness above the panel above the continuous fracturing zone, and below the constrained or surface effects zones, whose thickness or existence is dictated by the zones above and below ? maintenance of a constrained but leaky zone above the dilated zone and below the surface effects zone, whose thickness or existence is dictated by the zones above and below ? limited surface fracturing in areas of extension extending up to 50 ft or so beneath the ground surface

A two-dimensional finite element modelling technique is applied to predict the subsidence movements on a sloping ground surface above a completely mined panel. The modelling is carried out for the surface both directly and using a combination of an equivalent horizontal surface and a rays projection method and the result compared. The rays projection method provides the subsidence components on a sloping surface from the corresponding ones on an assumed equivalent horizontal surface through the point of mean elevation of the relevant part of the sloping surface. This method is used next to compare the subsidences, horizontal displacements and horizontal strains from the mining of a given panel at the surface for different inclinations. The results show that the magnitudes of the subsidence components are greater on the dip side of the slope from the point of the mean elevation, than the corresponding ones on the rise side and the asymmetry increases with the inclination of the surface. The findings are also compared with those of other research workers.

"Three cases of surface subsidence investigated over abandoned coal mines after flooding in one case and dcwatering in two cases are presented in this paper. Mining was conducted by the room and- pillar method at all the mines leaving stable pillars. This paper will discuss the background chain of events and the likely causes of the pillar failure resulting in surface subsidence.CASE NO.1BackgroundThe Pittsburgh scam was mined in 1960 by the room-and- pillar method, leaving pillars (Figure I) through Mine A. located in Monongalia County. West Virginia.The mining height in U1is area was 1.83 m (6 ft) with an average mining depth of 140 m (460 ft). The mining recovery was 62% and the safety factor of the pillars was calculated at 1.15 using the Bieniawski ( 1984) fom1ula. For stable pillar design. a 1.5 safety factor is recommended. A 1.15 safety factor is considered marginal. Pumping continued after the mine was shut down in 1960 to prevent water seeping into an adjoining mine owned by the same company. The pumping ceased on December 12. 2003, and the mine was allowed to flood. The water level rose about 17 m (55 ft) by August 3 1, 2004, based on observations in a nearby borehole. On September 3, 2004 surface subsidence occurred above this area causing damage 10 a residence (Figure 2).Summary of InvestigationThe floor of the Pittsburgh coal scam played a strong role in the pillar failure. In this area, the immediate floor of the Pittsburgh seam consists of about two feet of fireclay. Extensive damage to the surface house was an indication that a major collapse below the surface had occurred. The pillars supporting the overlying strata were evaluated to find the cause of their failure. The pillars in the Pittsburgh seam (sec Figure I) had a marginal safety factor of 1.15 before flooding and were stable for 26 years. Once the mine was flooded the water level in the Pittsburgh seam rose by 17 m (55 ft). Shortly thereafter the fireclay in the floor weakened, resulting in several pillars punching into the floor unevenly making the immediate roof unstable. The overburden strata supported by these pillars also subsided do"" n into the mine, causing damage to several house on the surface."

Following its introduction on underground collieries, the mandatory Code of Practice to Combat Rockfall Accidents (CoP) was applied to all opencast operations of lngwe Collieries (the South African division of BHP Billiton Energy Coal). The CoP includes, but is not limited to, requirements to assess hazards, manage them and monitor compliance. Information on methods to measure highwall conditions and compliance with control measures on opencast strip mines, as opposed to open pit mines, was found to be anything but freely available. However, on the Ingwe underground mines, a system of rating physical conditions in each section and how well production personnel were managing the situation, has been used with success for some time. It was decided that a similar approach would be taken, and, as with the underground rating system, the resultant rating forms should not be aimed at rock engineering specialists only but should be able to be used by production personnel as well. This paper discusses the highwall risk rating method as evolved over a couple of years and highlights that it is a flexible tool that can easily be changed to suit an individual mine's requirements. It also shows how operational aspects are being measured to determine how well the identified hazards are being managed. Allied to the method is a relatively easy, and certainly "low capex," mapping technique which allows between 500 and 1000m of highwall to be covered in a day. Features generally recorded include lithology, bench height, work still to be completed, coal losses or "toes", presence of water, dolerite intrusions, existing and potential failures, prominent joints, declared special and cautionary areas, cracks on upper benches and condition of spoil piles. Highwall mapping and photography as well as basic geological data collection, enable highwall risk and operational ratings to be determined. The same rating sheets may also be completed by production personnel, but without detailed mapping.

Austar Coal Mine (formerly Southlands and Ellalong Collieries) has had a long association with difficult strata control conditions associated with mining depth and a highly jointed/cleated coal seam. The conditions include poor longwall face conditions, cyclic loading, heavy tailgate (TG) roadway conditions, and difficulties in maintaining stable roadways on development at 5.2 m (17 ft), as well as the geotechnical challenges of an 8.5-m (27.9 ft) -wide roadway required for installation faces. The introduction of Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) to this environment has aided in the management of some of these issues, but LTCC has also given rise to other geotechnical considerations. Additional geotechnical issues associated with LTCC not only require management during operations, but also require consideration when evaluating new mining areas at Austar Coal Mine or potential LTCC extractable resources throughout Australia and the world. In September 2006, LTCC commenced at Austar Coal Mine in longwall panel A1. Since this point the LTCC face has been increased from 147 to 216 m (482 to 709 ft)and finally to 227 m (745 ft) in width, and it has also been rehanded and modified in the three fully extracted panels to date. The application of LTCC in panels A1, A2, A3, and now A4 has been very successful, both from a coal resource recovery point of view and in the management of the principal hazards of spontaneous combustion and strata control. This paper focuses on the geotechnical aspects of the application of LTCC at Austar Coal Mine and also reviews some advances in general strata control management at the mine.

Two existing predictive methods were chosen for evaluation; an influence function (Gals Theory) and a profile function (hyperbolic). These were applied to several field measured subsidence pro¬files over United States coal mines. The effect of homogeneous versus non-homogeneous overburden on surface subsidence is demonstrated and the utilization of Bals Theory as a subsidence predictive method for both types of overburden is examined. The major factor affecting subsidence profile characteristics is the migration of the inflection point toward the centerline of the longwall panel. A computer program was written to aid in the analysis.

Over the past several years, the Bureau of Mines has conducted studies on the performance of fully grouted resin bolts In underground mines. The effectiveness of resin-grouted bolts in maintaining a competent roof, even in weak rock, has been well documented in the literature. Recent Bureau studies have evaluated the affects of shortened grout columns on bolt behavior in a variety of rock types (1, 2, 3). The application of partial grout columns to primary roof support systems has been introduced as a viable alternative to fully grouted bolt systems in some mines. The point-anchored resin bolt and combination bolt represent such alternatives. While both systems usually employ some mechanical interlocking system, their primary difference lies in the length of resin column used. Point- anchor systems rely on an anchoring device that is a short length of resin column of 2 feet or leas. Combination bolts, on the other hand, often require 3 feat or more of resin column. Resin migration into voids and fractures intersecting the borebole wall is a major problem when installing fully grouted bolts in weak roof rock and can result in a reduced column length that provides reduced anchorage. The relationship between column length and anchorage integrity deserves closer study. The Denver Research Center of the Bureau of Mines has examined the load- carrying capabilities of resin-grouted bolts in weak strata. Pull tests were performed on about 900 resin-grouted, 4- foot-long bolts with column lengths ranging from 6 to 48 inches. The practical performances of 8 different column lengths were evaluated for 10 mines under in sit" conditions using data obtained from standard pull tests. In addition criteria are discussed, including engineering properties of the host rock for designing safer and more effective grouted bolt installations.

"The capacity of ground support components which have been affected by corrosion is reduced and may ultimately lead to dynamic failure of the component and the strata. In order to maintain an effective, long-term ground support system, significant campaigns of rehabilitation are often required in corrosion affected areas which also expose the workers to hazardous conditions. The most common corrosion protection for steel ground support utilises sacrificial systems such as galvanising. Galvanising has previously been proven to be susceptible to some corrosion processes. Stainless steel is the most effective in resistance to corrosion, but can be cost prohibitive, and its mechanical properties often make it unsuited to use in ground support components.Providing an outer protective plastic coating to bolts has proven to be an effective means of protecting the inner steel bar from corrosion. However, these support systems tend to be susceptible to coating damage, and require post cement grouting to provide full encapsulation. In comparison to a standard bolt/resin system, they can be slow to install and expensive. These systems have also been shown to reduce overall load transfer performance of the bolting system.In order provide a higher level of corrosion protection whilst maintaining current installation practices and bolting cycle times, Minova has developed the Enduro™ Steel Ground Support Range. The Enduro™ range consists of standard Minova steel ground support components which have been treated with a unique coating process. The Enduro™ coating has been tested in the harshest of conditions, in laboratory controlled conditions and in underground trials. It has been proven to effectively resist or completely eliminate the formation of corrosion, even in the most aggressive environments. This paper explains the process and provides the details of the laboratory and underground corrosion performance testing carried out on Enduro™ ground support products.INTRODUCTIONTraditionally, the most common form of corrosion protection in steel ground support consists of a sacrificial protective coating such as galvanising (Aziz, et al., 2013). Such coatings have proven to be ineffective in extreme high and low pH conditions with corrosion of the support system commonly encountered. There is also evidence that common forms of galvanising may actually increase the rate of corrosion in certain pH environments. Figure 1 shows typical corrosion and failure of a standard re-bar roof bolt."

"Stillwater Mining Company is the only U.S. producer of platinum group metals (PGMs) and the largest producer outside of South Africa and Russia. The Company controls a considerable portion of the J-M Reef and is currently developing the ""Blitz Project,"" which will provide a main haulage level, ore pass systems, backfill plants, and flow-through ventilation to increase production and ensure sustainable extraction of this critical strategic mineral. While driving two sub-parallel footwall laterals to about 8,125 m (26,000 ft) long, one of the development drifts experienced a massive fall in a geologically disturbed area created by a dike intrusion. Combinations of a void fill material (Tekseal), polyurethane injection, fore poling coupled with steel arches, and supplemental bolting allow safe and efficient advance through this geologically disturbed zone. The J-M Reef is a PGMbearing reef deposit located in the Stillwater Complex near NyeMontana. The mining property and location are shown in Figure 2.The Blitz Project is named after the Blitz mining claims and is developing the Eastern extent of the J-M Reef Project., This consists of a 5.5 m (18 ft) diameter TBM drive on the SOE (1,562 m (5,000 ft) above sea level and east of the shaft collar) and a 4.7 x 4.7 m (15 x 15 ft) drill and blast heading on the 5,600E (1,750 m (5,600 ft) above sea level and east of the shaft collar). The Benbow Decline will be completed running perpendicular to the TBM by drilling and blasting methods. The TBM drift will be used for exploration drilling, ventilation, and will serve as the main haulage level. The 56E will be used for ventilation and exploration drilling. The Benbow decline will serve as the exhaust drift."

"Expandable rock bolts are widely used in hard rock mines as an efficient ground control product. However, capacity and service life can be significantly reduced if the metallic body is subjected to corrosion. In some hard rock mines in the U.S., highly corrosive ground conditions exist, and it has been reported that inflatable rock bolts have corroded within a few months after installation. To provide mining industry a cost-effective inflatable bolt and combat the corrosion issues, Jennmar Corporation, Inc., and its subsidiary Keystone Mining Services, LLC (KMS), analyzed corroded bolt samples, identified root causes, evaluated properties of various coating materials, and developed a new inflatable rock bolt, Python M3TM, that is protected with an innovative PyFlexU2TM coating. The new generation Python M3 features improved steel chemistry for reliable performance, modified profile for better inflation, and surface preparation and coating application. The PyFlexU2 is impervious to liquid and air, durable, and UV resistant. With a flexible adhesive, and highly corrosion-resistant undercoating, and a very hard sacrificial surface coating, the PyFlexU2 coating system provides the Python M3 superior protection against chemical corrosion and physical scratch damage. The under-coating has exceptional flexibility and adhesion to prevent coating micro-cracks or fractures after bolt inflation and possesses excellent corrosion resistance to acids (pH <3), alkalis (pH >11), fuels, and salt solvents. The corrosion and scratch resistant PyFlexU2 coating offers very effective bolt protection for extra longevity in highly corrosive environments. The Python M3 coated with PyFlexU2 has been tested in the most challenging conditions, including laboratory corrosion tests in extreme acidic and basic solvents, rock slurry, and borehole scratch insertion tests. With demonstrated corrosion and scratch resistance, the product has been greatly welcomed by hard rock mines in the West and is currently installed in large scale. This paper identifies the root causes of the bolt corrosion, discusses the analysis process, and details laboratory and underground tests carried out on the Python M3 coated with PyFlexU2. The current state of thick seam coal mining methods is illustrated in three typical cases of thick seam longwall mining, each pointing out the outstanding achievements in top-coal caving mining and large cutting height mining in China. At the same time, based on current thick seam mining practices in China, some problems urgently need to be solved. These include improving the recovery ratio of coal reserves, determination of overburden strata pressure, shield support selection, supporting methods for large cross-section in-seam roadways, top coal bulk flow theory, and gas flow and control technology. In addition, the rational production capacity should be studied from both economic and technological perspectives in order to optimize coal recovery and efficiency.
