Information about geostructure for effective rock bolting must be obtained before setting the bolt into rock in a coal mine roadway. Especially, rock type variation and distribution of discontinuities such as layer boundaries, and separation of strata and cracks all represent indispensable knowledge. To achieve in-situ evaluation of roof rock, we developed an MWD (measurement while drilling) system using mechanical data from a drilling machine for rockbolt. System hardware detects torque, thrust, revolution, and stroke of the machine, and software analyzes the mechanical data log and displays locations of discontinuities using Neural Network techniques. Also, this system is able to estimate roof rock 3-D geostructure for varied rock types and discontinuity distribution in cases of a drill hole array arrangement in roof rock. We conducted a feasibility study for it using hydraulic drilling at roadways of the Taiheiyo Coal Mine, Japan. Simultaneously, some core drillings were also performed to confirm system analysis data. For core samples, distribution of cracks was observed and the borehole wall was investigated by OFS (optical fiber scope). Must discontinuity locations estimated from roof logging were conformed with data obtained from core inspection. However, the core sample contained a number of cracks which were not found in the mechanical data log. This indicates that additional cracks were generated during and/or after core drilling by the influence of rotational force of the machine and water supply. Furthermore, in comparison with the OFS image, resolution of the discontinuity's log estimated by this system was clarified; that is, it is difficult to detect small size cracks (hairline cracks) from a mechanical data log and the core inspection by OFS. This paper outlines the new hardware system for hydraulic drilling machine and compares the discontinuity map obtained from the software system with drilling core inspection.

Recent studies by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health indicate that shear loading contributes significantly to failure of bolts used for rock reinforcement in coal mine roofs. Laboratory tests on 17 bolts were conducted to study the behavior of roof bolts subjected to shear loading over a range of axial bolt loads. Fourteen strain gauges were attached to each bolt to measure axial and bending loads at seven locations along its length. The instrumented bolts were grouted through two high-strength concrete blocks, and axial tension was applied to as much as 75% of yield strength. With the block interface acting as a failure plane, shear loads were applied to the blocks at a constant rate of displacement to the ultimate strength of the bolts. The tests characterized the relationship of axial bolt loads to shear forces across a rock bedding plane and measured the distribution of axial and bending strain along the length of the bolts. These results will improve the selection of roof reinforcement in mine areas where high shear stresses are present, thus improving the safety of miners working in these areas.

To maintain the stability of longwall tailgate entries, they have to be supported by not only the primary roof support but also the secondary roof support due to the impact of the longwall mining¬induced abutment loads. Depending on the mining condition of a typical coal seam and its distance from the previous panel's gob, the longwall tailgate entry is often reinforced by the secondary roof support in the form of standing supports and/or cable bolts or trusses during longwall retreat, Even though lots of research work has been done to study the behavior of different standing supports in the laboratory. their function and requirements for a typical mining condition are still not fully understood due to lack of field data and correct assumptions about the behavior of the already-bolted entry roof under mining-induced abutment loads. Therefore, the application of the secondary roof support for tailgate entry roof control is still limited to trial and error, which often results in either higher cost for tailgate roof control if the design is too conservative or more production delays due to roof falls in the outby tailgate entry if the design is inadequate. To have a better tailgate roof control with reasonable roof control cost, RAG American Coal, NIOSH, and HeiTech have been conducting a joint research project to monitor actual roof loading, roof deformation, and entry convergence in the tailgate entry of 10 North panel at RAG Emerald mine. The actual roof loading data are used to calibrate and improve the roof control model for longwall tailgate entries, which has been developed by RAG American Coal, and to further reduce the roof control cost for longwall tailgate entries. The authors in this study attempt to discuss the Roof Control Model developed by RAG American Coal. in which some guidelines or important parameters for designing the secondary roof support for longwall tailgate entries are proposed.

During the last decade, a significant amount of research has been conducted by Energy West Mining Company, government agencies, academia, and consulting companies to develop predictive tools for assessing the stability of the Castlegate Sandstone, which is found approximately 250 m above multiple-scam coal reserves, Energy West Mining uses longwall mining techniques in its operations near Huntington, Utah, and these studies were initiated to satisfy requirements for maintaining the stability of the Castlegate Sandstone and resource recovery. In this study, the authors have used multiple-regression analysis techniques and a wealth of data collected over many years on geology, mining, and escarpment stability. The volume of failed rocks is used as the response variable after several other factors were considered, including measurement of surface deformation and frequency of mining-induced surface fractures. Geologic and geometric variables were obtained along 3.7 km of escarpment exposure at 130 study locations. Regression analysis of data for the first 29 study location, which had been fully' undermined, showed that surface topography played a critical rule in influencing escarpment stability. Preliminary regression analysis results from 70 study loca¬tions identified several other important geologic arid mining factors that influence be stability of the sandstone escarpment These are canyon slope, sandstone thickness, and mining influence ante.

Maltby Colliery, operated by RJB Mining (UK) Ltd is successfully mining the Parkgate seam in Yorkshire at a depth of 1000m using longwall retreat. Extraction in the Parkgate seam is influenced by interaction from previous workings in the Swallow Wood Seam 160m above. The paper describes in-situ stress measurements and simple gate road convergence measurements carried out to assess the extent of the interactive influence. The stress measurements, obtained using the stress relief overcore technique, were carried out from a maingate development roadway in an area where the stress redistribution under an overlying pillar and adjacent panel goat could be measured. The measured vertical stress distribution confirmed a significant interactive influence with high imposed vertical stresses under the overlying panel edges. Simple roadway convergence monitoring stations established in the gateroads of a retreating panel and in the development gateroads of the adjacent panel, confirmed higher rates of roadway deformation relating to overlying panel edges and pillars, particularly in the areas where a vertical stress window developed during panel retreat. In addition to highlighting a close relationship between closure rate and the measured vertical stresses, the convergence monitoring proved valuable in establishing characteristic deformation behaviour under specific interactive influences and also in defining the optimum location, extent and time of installation u£ additional roadway support and reinforcement. The information from the measurement programme has enabled the Mine Management to gain a better understanding of the interactive influences on roadway behaviour and was instrumental in designing the layout of panels in an area of the North East district of the mine where previous experience had indicated the combined influence of high interactive stresses and weak roof lithology resulted in difficult strata conditions both at development and on panel retreat. The planned location of panels and gateroads took into account both mining operational considerations and the need to avoid potentially high risk interaction zones as highlighted from analysis of the monitoring results. To obtain additional data on parameters influencing roadway deformation, extended roadway convergence monitoring has been established.

This paper synopsizes the factors which mine operators should take into account when evaluating whether an inrush may occur. It addresses the applicable Federal regulations and discusses some items which coal operators should consider in applying for a permit, Through collecting and analyzing the pertinent information, the likelihood of encountering problems can be judged. Through proper mine planning, the potential for creating hazardous conditions can be mitigated.

Mine roof failure due to excessive horizontal stress has been recognized as a major cause of hazardous roof conditions in some mines. Stress measurements gathered by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) at 24 different eastern mines show horizontal stress to be typically 2 to 3 times as great as vertical stress. The focus of current Bureau work is to develop detailed design parameters to assess and control the effects of horizontal stress. To facilitate the recognition of horizontal stress effects and to easily determine principal stress direction without resorting to cumbersome, expensive, and time consuming field measurements, the Bureau has developed a stress mapping methodology. Stress recognition and direction determination are required to successfully employ a number of control strategies such as mine layout, mining sequences, and support optimization to control the effects of horizontal stress, thereby increasing the safety of U.S. coal mines. This approach has been used in other major coal producing countries, most notably Australia and the UK, and has greatly enhanced the safety of their mines (1). This paper discusses horizontal stress, directional based control techniques, and provides guidelines for the use of the stress mapping technique. A case study of a mine where the technique has been used is also presented.

The underground coal mines in the Lake Macquarie area of the Newcastle Coalfield, New South Wales, Australia are constrained by surface subsidence restrictions as low as 150 mm. The mining environment is shallow, generally between 100 m and 200 m, often multi-seam and commonly overlain by residential development or tidal waters. Most mines use partial or panel and pillar extraction techniques to meet the subsidence restrictions and allow maximum resource recovery. This paper gives an overview of the results of a recent two year government funded research project aimed at developing a mechanistic, geomechanically based mine design criteria for subsidence control. Three extraction layouts were monitored in detail to assess the relationship between mining geometry, pillar behaviour and surface subsidence. Pillars at each site were instrumented with stress cells, convergence monitors and extensometers. Field data was used to initially calibrate, and subsequently, verify stress and displacement predictions made by the three-dimensional displacement discontinuity code, SUBSOL. Back-analysis of the modelling results indicate SUBSOL's capability as a tool to satisfactorily predict surface subsidence magnitudes and pillar loads for alternative pillar and panel layouts.

The mining industry would benefit greatly by imaging geologic conditions well in advance of mining. In layered deposits such as coal, trona, quartz, and potash, natural waveguides form and enable electromagnetic seam waves to travel great distances. In the early 1980s, the Radio Imaging Method (RIM) was developed to capitalize on electromagnetic seam wave propagation in the assessments of seam conditions in longwall panels. The initial applications of RIM tomography and comparisons to in-mine mapping of geologic conditions proved that faults, paleochannels, and rapidly thinning coal could be detected and imaged with seam waves. This paper describes the application of electromagnetic seam waves in mapping the margins of a paleochannel crossing a longwall panel and the interesting possibility of adopting the newly developed Full Wave Inversion Code (FWIC) )Newman 1995) to significantly improve imaging resolution. When tomography images are combined with ground control science, a significant reduction in cost, roof fall potential, and waste rock in underground mining may be realized.

Following several roof falls in the E3 longwall development of a Consol Pennsylvania Coal Company underground coal mine, an underground roof geology reconnaissance program consisting of twenty-nine 20-foot deep roof holes had identified the presence of thick sandstone layers with abundant shale and micaceous streaks. The base of the sandstone was 4 to 8 feet above the roof line within the fall areas. The presence of micaceous streaks created extremely pronounced planes of weakness in the sandstone. A structural irregularity, which extends into the E4 and E5 developments, exists between crosscuts I 1 and 30,where all roof falls occurred. Immediately to the east of this structural irregularity lies a huge syncline. The presence of thick sandstone units within the typically all shale environment and within such a structural irregularity helps to maximize stress concentration and creates closely spaced joints in the sandstone, which explains why many cracks are present in the macroscopically massive sandstone upon development. The approaching E2 longwall gob to the south and on the down-dip side, on the other hand, provided horizontal stress relief in the sandstone, which helps to explain the many roof falls in the E3 development that occurred during or immediately after the formation of the E2 gob. Finite element modeling confirmed the presence of such horizontal stress relief. Since the E3 longwall was a right-handed face, stress concentration was expected at the longwall headgate T -junctions, and further delamination of the sandstone was expected upon arrival of the E3 longwall face. Based on the results of the roof geology reconnaissance program and a roof stability analysis that took into account up to eleven parameters, supplemental headgate and track roof support consisting of 16-foot and 20-foot long cable bolts was successfully implemented within the zone of thick sandstone with micaceous streaks and structural irregularity and at other potential roof instability areas along the E3 development. The cable bolts were designed to be anchored at least 4 feet above the sandstone unit into the mostly competent sandy shale layers. No headgate roof control problem was reported within the sandstone and structural irregularity zone during E3 and the subsequent E4 longwall extractions.

The combination of free standing steel supports, such as arches, and rock bolts (mixed support) has Frequently been in used in UK coal mine roadways when it is considered that the strata and/or environmental conditions would not be suitable for rock bolts solely. However, how such mixed support systems operate is not fully understood. Due to the differences in the support method provided by rock bolts and free standing steel, the total support generated is not simply a case of adding the contribution to the support of the roadway given by the two systems. This paper describes a numerical investigation into mixed support systems when used in coal mine roadways. A series of 2D and 3D geomechanical models are described and the method of modelling the rock bolts and steel supports in coal mine tunnels is discussed. The numerical models described include rock boltd only roadways, steel supported roadways and mixed supported roadways in a variety of geological and in-situ stress conditions. Conclusions are formed that allow an insight into mechanisms of strata reinforcement provided by the support systems modelled. Further to this, a review of the numerical modelling of pre-tensioned rock bolted systems is described identifying the contribution to support efficiency given by the adoption of tensioning in full column resin anchors. The results obtained highlight that the effectiveness of the pre-tensioned load is dependant on the rock mass quality and in- situ stress level at the site where it is to be used.

A series of laboratory experiments were conducted on a variety of bolt types to examine the load transfer capacities of different profiled bolts in short encapsulation push testing. A 75 mm section of 150 mm long bolt specimen was anchored in a 75 mm long stainless steel tube using full resin encapsulation. Six types of different profiled bolts and two non - profiled bolts were tested. Bolts with higher profile were in general found to have greater shearing resistance and higher stiffness than low profile bolts. Widely spaced profiles allowed greater displacement at peak shear strength, and bolts with no profiles produced very link load transfer capability. Rough surfaced plain bolts showed a significant load transfer capability in comparison to a factory supplied smooth surface bolt which supports the belief that rusted bolts have higher lnad transfer capability that un-rusted bolt surfaces.

Roof failure occurs much more frequently at intersections than entries and crosscuts. Using a commercial finite element package, four-way and three-way intersections reinforced with the tensioned bolts are modeled. The 3-D model considers bolt pre-tension, bolt installation procedure, bedding planes and in-situ horizontal stresses. The modeling results from both four-way and three-way intersections are analyzed with regard to the intersection stability. The mechanisms of tensioned bolting at the intersections are investigated and some tensioned bolting guidelines for intersections are given. Based on this study, a better way to enhance intersection stability is to use longer bolts than entries or crosscuts and increase the bolt density near the intersection corners.

Unusual circumstances may require that a longwall retreat into or through a previously driven room. The operation can be completed successfully, but there have been a number of spectacular failures which exposed miners to serious roof fall hazards. To help determine what factors contribute to such failures, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) compiled a comprehensive international database of 130 case histories. The cases include five failures where major rock falls occurred in front of the shields, and six even more serious failures involving major overburden weighting. This suggests two room failure mechanisms. The first is a roof fall type failure caused by loading of the immediate roof at the face as the fender narrows. The second is a weighting type failure caused by the inability of the roof to bridge the recovery room and face area, and affecting rock well above the immediate roof. The data indicate that the roof fall type of failure is less likely when intensive roof reinforcement (bolts, cables, and trusses) is employed together with higher-capacity shields. The overburden weighting failures, in contrast, occurred when the roof was weak and little standing support was used.

Mining subsidence over shallow abandoned coal mine workings is unfortunately not an uncommon experience in the coalfields of North America and there is a significant knowledge and literature base addressing the phenomenon and related issues. From time to time, however, a case history arises which is outside the more routine occurrence. This paper addresses one such case and presents an overview of a subsidence Event above abandoned coal workings, which badly damaged a two-story High School building. The subsidence at the Cape Breton & Victoria Regional School Board (CBVRSB)'s MacDonald High School in Dominion, N.S., Canada on October 30, 2002 led to a detailed investigation. It was concluded that the ground movement and associated building damage had been caused by mining subsidence in underlying old underground coal mine workings of the 1890s, only 150 ft deep at the School. The Event was not isolated and a similar but smaller event happened nearby a few months later. The paper describes the events and summarizes the subsequent investigations and findings. The 17-year old High School building was eventually demolished.

In 2010, the number of fatal rib falls in U.S. underground coal mines exceeded fatal roof falls for the first time ever. While recent trends have seen roof fall fatalities reduced by about 62% since the 1990s (from an average of 9.6 per year in the 1990s to 3.6 per year during the last five years), the incidence of rib fall fatalities has remained approximately constant (about 1.5 per year). In addition, injury incidents associated with pillar rib failure have been steady at approximately 100 per year. The persistence of rib fall injuries, underlined by the recent increase in rib fall fatalities, has led to this investigation of the coal rib failure parameters and methods available to mitigate rib failure in U.S. underground coal mines A detailed study of the 21 fatal rib fall incidents that have occurred since 1995 (excluding coal burst incidents) indicates that the two most important risk factors are the mining height and the depth of cover. The depth of cover was 700 ft (213 m) or greater in 81% of the fatalities, and the mining height was at or exceeded 7 ft (2 m) in every instance but one. Other risk factors included multiple seam interactions, rock partings in the seam, and retreat mining. The accident history reveals that joints or slickenside features within the rib increase the hazard. Approximately threequarters of the rib fatality victims were roof bolting machine operators and continuous mining machine operators. This paper includes a brief overview of techniques for rib control; including bolts, standing support, bent steel straps, and rib strapping. The available mining equipment features for installing rib support and protecting operators from rib falls are also discussed. A proactive approach to rib control using available technologies will lower the risk to miners and is an endeavor that must be pursued to reduce rib fall accidents.

A procedure is presented for the design of an arch canopy for the application of rehabilitating a high-roof-fall area. This procedure is specifically developed for evaluating an unbackfllled arch canopy, which Is subjected to an impact load (roof fall). Dynamic line loading of the arch canopy at its crown is only considered and the procedure does not account for an unsymmetrical loading condition. The evaluation of whether an arch canopy is suitable for a particular installation is dependent upon many variables, including in-nine conditions and the engineering properties of the structure. However, a general evaluation can be based upon a comparison of the arch's maximum crown deflection and a prescribed allowable crown deflection. A single spring-mass system is used as an idealized model to represent the dynamic behavior of the arch canopy at its crown. An energy approach is taken to determine the maximum crown deflection of an arch rather than solving a differential equation of notion derived from dynamic equilibrium. The design procedure is based on the concept that when an arch canopy is subjected to impact loading at its crown and deflects from its unloaded state to maximum crown deflection, the structure absorbs strain energy, both elastic and plastic. As a result, this strain energy can be calculated from a static load-displacement diagram for the structure. The significance of this design procedure Is that It gives mine personnel an analytical tool to select an arch canopy to meet the dimensional and functional requirements of a mine entry and a prescribed allowable crown deflection.

Following a massive rib wall failure along the reclaim belt of the large underground surge bunker at CONSOL?s Bailey Mine, a multifaceted, cleanup and rehabilitation effort was initiated to rapidly stabilize the bunker rib walls and place the bunker back into production. Rehabilitation of the bunker included infilling and re-mining of the failed excavation area, installing a system of horizontal tie-back cable bolts, constructing a large knee wall at the base of the rib, reducing water inflow, and providing drainage for rib water. As a result of the coordinated effort, the bunker was safely placed back into production within 38 days. The 7500-ton surge bunker, an engineering feat in itself, was constructed in 2003 to accommodate production surges from two longwalls. In 2005, 14.8 million raw tons passed through the bunker. The 22-foot wide by 75-foot high surge bunker excavation extends as much a 52 feet below the base of the Pittsburgh seam. The bunker excavation measures 325 feet in length, with feeder and reclaim belt excavations extending the bunker excavation by approximately 500 feet. The massive rib roll, which occurred near the bottom of the reclaim belt slope, measured as much as 45 feet high by 60 feet long. Failure of the rib was attributed to progressive failure of a thick claystone unit present near the slope bottom area. Saturation of the claystone by water inflow, high insitu horizontal stress, and pre-existing rock joints were considered contributing factors. Immediately after rib failure, mine production was temporarily rerouted to a parallel belt. Two bulkheads were then constructed 175 feet apart along the reclaim belt slope, and a customized fly ash-cement mixture was pumped from the surface into the unstable reclaim slope area. A tunnel was then mined through the backfill along the original reclaim slope contour; the new excavation supported by a system of customized steel sets. To assure stability of the adjacent bunker rib wall, a pattern of 70-foot long cable bolts were installed downward from the adjacent entries to effectively tie back the rib. Drainage holes and a 12-foot high knee wall were installed. Adjacent gas wells were also plugged to help reduce inflow. Periodic inspections and continuous monitoring are being used to help assure bunker stability.
