"In recent years, zinc recovery from flue dusts and other industrial wastes has been increased, offering to the market a large tonnage of secondary zinc oxides, which can not be processed directly to render high quality zinc because of the hazardous impurities and halogens content.The ZINCEXTM Technology has been commercially applied for more than thirty years and represents the most suitable solution to deal with secondary or crude zinc oxides due to its flexibility, simplicity, and cost-efficiency, allowing production of SHG electrolytic zinc and pure zinc sulfate salts thanks to the flexibility and selectivity of the zinc solvent extraction unit regarding to get rid of impurities.A dual plant able to produce electrolytic zinc and crystallized zinc sulfate has been engineered to provide a flexible and profitable solution to zinc market. A description of the study and the relevant achievements is presented in this paper.IntroductionZinc is a valuable commodity in the marketplace and can be recycled again and again and still maintain its physical and chemical properties. Zinc recycling offers both environmental and economic benefits such as reducing volumes of material that end up in landfills, saving energy by reducing the need for mining and smelting, and relieving environmental impact on the land and water, and conserving zinc ore [1].The supply of zinc able to be re-processed will be increasing from year to year according to secondary materials enter the recycling stream, and as a result, more recycled zinc will become available in the market. Thus, some existing zinc refineries are implementing an annexed treatment line to process secondary oxides in conjunction with primary zinc concentrates [2].The galvanized steel scrap is normally recycled in electric arc furnaces or in basic oxygen furnaces, which generates a large tonnage of zinc-bearing flue dusts (EAFD). Around one million ton EAFD is yearly produced at the USA and the EU, respectively. The flue dusts are treated commercially by pyrometallurgical ways such as waelz kilns, electrothermic furnaces, etc, to yield secondary zinc oxides that can not be processed directly to render high quality zinc because of the hazardous impurities and halogens content [3]."

"Inherent rapid cooling in laser processing often produces novel materials due to nonequilibrium partitioning during solidification. This paper reports theoretical and experimental investigations on in situ alloy formation with extended solid solution.A mathematical model for determining the composition of metastable alloys and the effects of various process parameters on the composition of extended solid solution is presented. To model the nonequilibrium partitioning of solute in concentrated solution, rate equations and conservation of mass equations are used and an expression for nonequilibrium partition coefficients is derived for concentrated solution, which is realistic for laser alloying and cladding. Effect of rapid cooling on solute segregation is presented by deriving an expression for nonequilibrium partition coefficient.Experiments were performed with Ni-AI and Ni-Hf systems to obtain the composition of solute in the extended solid solution produced during laser cladding."

Beryllium metal and alloys have been crucial in the advancement of technologies in space exploration, transportation, national defense, communications, energy, safety and medicine, to name a few. Beryllium is one-third lighter than aluminum and six times stiffer than steel, with unique thermal properties. Demand for this metal is expected to continue to increase as new technologies emerge, hence its efficient and safe extraction needs to be addressed. Current extraction technologies are very complex and energy intensive, but at the same time yield excellent quality metal. In order to develop new or improve current extraction methods, a detailed analysis of current and past extraction technologies must be made. This work intends to compile and interpret most of the research, development and industrial practices used in the production of beryllium, and open the field for innovative extraction methods.

A thermodynamic and experimental investigation to develop a new process for converting molybdenite concentrate to molybdenum dioxide by a water-vapor oxidation process was carried out. In addition, the behavior of rhenium and selenium in molybdenum concentrate during the process was investigated. The kinetics of the reaction were determined by measuring the weight change of a sample with time in water vapor at temperatures between 700-1000°C. The results were analyzed by a Shrinking Unreacted Core model under chemical reaction control, which showed an activation energy value of 102 kJ/mol. To determine the behavior of rhenium and selenium, their concentrations in the molybdenum sulfide and the product molybdenum dioxide were measured by the use of ICP. While most rhenium remained with the molybdenum dioxide after the water vapor oxidation, almost all selenium volatilized. These results agree with thermodynamic analysis.

The capacity of Outokumpu Pori Copper Refinery has been increased by 50 % to 70 000 t/a in the last five years by adopting periodic current reversal, reducing spacing and installing some new cells in the old tank house building. Five years operation of PCR has proved that it is possible to achieve additional capacity with PCR and yet produce high quality cathodes. The impurity level in anodes has considerably increased, and recently, arsenic, antimony and sometimes bismuth have displaced nickel as the most critical impurity.

"A new process has been developed to bioleach refractory gold ores to expose the precious metal values using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria.The ore is hosted in a limestone rock with secondary replacement of carbonaceous and pyritic minerals. Crushing, stacking, bioleaching, rinsing and neutralization have been completed in a 45-day total time cycle. The use of sulfuric acid operation, and concentrated Thiobacillus ferrooxidans population allows the short bioleaching cycle.The ore is then processed using conventional Carbon-In-Leach Cyanide recovery techniques.ABSTRACT ONLY"

"Electrowinning of copper by monopolar cells require common anode and cathode busbar and crossbars to connect each electrode to the respective common busbar. On the other hand, the bipolar configuration warrants the end electrodes only to be connected to busbars; there is substantial reduction in copper requirement. In the present work, an electrowinning cell with bipolar electrodes and end electrodes, each having an area of 1000 cm2 was designed and operated. The bipolar electrode is made of mixed metal oxide coated titanium mesh welded to plain titanium sheet. Coated titanium mesh acts as anode and the plain titanium sheet acts as cathode. Environmentally unacceptable lead anode and the recurring loss of lead are done away with. Closer spacing of the electrodes, paves way for the application of higher current density leading to mass transfer enhancement. Performance of bipolar copper electrowinning cell is reported.1. IntroductionThe normally adopted practice in electrowinning of copper is the conventional monopolar configuration. In this practice, the individual electrodes act either as anode or cathode. Hence there is a need to connect every one of the electrodes to the common anode or cathode busbar and crossbars running across the top of the cell are necessary. The common busbar carries very high current which is divided among the individual crossbars and hence has to be thicker in relation to the current load of the cell. The drawback of the need to use common busbars of thicker cross section and the need to have crossbars are obviated in the bipolar configuration."

Recovery of dissolved copper from discard slags is a critical consideration affecting the economics of copper smelting. Slag cleaning is frequently carried out in electric furnaces, however reduction by injection of natural gas in a holding furnace may offer a lower cost alternative in some circumstances. As the residence time of the injected gas is short, the factors controlling the rate of reduction need to be clarified in order to optimise the design of the slag cleaning furnace. A series of medium scale (200 kg) reduction tests to investigate the rate of reduction of copper-containing slags by injection of natural gas-nitrogen mixtures between 1150-1250C was carried out by CSIRO Minerals. The composition of the gas in the top-space of the reactor was found to be significantly more reducing than the slag, indicating that thermodynamic equilibrium was not established between the slag and the gas in the bubble plume. An apparent first order rate law was observed between the rate of oxygen elimination from the bath and the magnetite concentration of the bath. The dissolved copper concentration was closely correlated with the oxygen potential of the slag, suggesting a partial equilibrium between the dissolved components of the slag. The utilisation efficiency of the natural gas decreased as the natural gas flow rate was increased. The results of the tests tend to indicate that the rate is controlled by a mixed reaction kinetics/ mass transport mechanism. The work was supported by Xstrata Copper ? Mt Isa Mines.

For the well-being of all living creatures and in response to green-environment policy from governments around the global, it is essential to reduce SO2 emissions from mining / smelters as well as other industrial facilities around the globe. However, often times, these SO2 containing flue gases and smelter flash gases also include oxygen and SO3, which complicate the SO2 removal process and technology. There are many novel technologies recently developed for removing SO2 from such gases. Most of these, however, have not yet commercially demonstrated that they are technically viable and economically feasible. Many of these novel processes also generate undesired byproducts, which themselves then need to be disposed of in a safe and cost effective manner. Fluor has developed the Fluor SOx Cleanup Process with a wide variety of process configurations to customize removal of the undesired flue gas constituents in a cost-effective manner. The process removes practically all SO2 in the form of salable elemental sulfur and also reduces CO emissions. Successful operation of major components of the Fluor SOx removal technologies has been demonstrated in many commercially operating units. Besides their technical viability and economic feasibility, Fluor SOx removal technologies do not generate any undesired byproducts or encounter SO2 associated corrosion issues. Moreover, these technologies produce high-purity, saleable elemental sulfur. This paper discusses the merits of the Fluor SOx removal technologies, their technical and cost advantages, their simplicity in design and operation, and their readiness for implementation.

Noranda Inc., CEZinc presently employs a cement-stabilization (jarofix) process to stabilize its jarosite residues for direct disposal. In this process, Portland cement partly decomposes Na-jarosite to form Ca6Fe2(SC>4)3(OH)i2.nH20, ferric hydroxide and sodium sulphate which further reacts to form gypsum; approximately one-third of the Na-jarosite reacts in the current commercial product. The cured jarofix products also contain minor amounts of various Ca-Al-Fe silicate-sulphate-hydrate phases and traces of calcite. Together with gypsum and a Ca-Fe sulphate phase, these species bond the various particles together, imparting mechanical strength and reducing the permeability. Water-soluble Zn and Mg are stabilized in the Ca-Al-Fe silicate-sulphate-hydrate phases. The freshly cured products usually contain small amounts of moisture and traces of residual Portland cement, which provides additional alkalinity for the neutralization of any residual acid species. Jarofix products stored for more than six years in the laboratory, after curing, are usually dry and exhibit the same micro-textures as those of the freshly cured products. However, the stored products are depleted in the Ca6Fe2(S04)3(OH)i2.nH20 and Portland cement phases, and are enriched in gypsum and calcite which reflects the highly alkaline environment of the jarofix products. The aged products also have increased amounts of the Ca-Al-Fe silicate-sulphate-hydrate phases which have elevated Zn and Mg contents. "Historically, Ordinary Portland cement has been the preferred medium to immobilise arsenic. However, arsenic in cement gives rise to calcium-arsenic phases and their known decomposition to calcium carbonate and arsenic trioxide via atmospheric carbonation raises serious questions about the long-term suitability of cement for arsenic immobilisation. Alternative matrices such as low-temperature ceramics (LTCs) potentially offer superior resistance towards carbonation owing to the absence of calcium. Consequently, the potential for arsenic immobilisation using LTCs has been investigated. Both AsIII and AsV have been incorporated and samples assessed according to a standard leaching protocol. AsIII persists in the porewater of alkali-bonded LTCs as sodium arsenite rendering them unsuitable for immobilisation. Thermal treatment of these LTCs to consolidate the microstructure and reduce open porosity resulted in sodium-rich cryptocrystalline matrices that leached arsenic and sodium readily. The omission of sodium in acid-bonded LTC formulations resulted in leach data that were close to the target value of 5 µg/ml in Toxicity Characterisation Leaching Protocol tests.IntroductionArsenic is a carcinogenic substance and its adverse effects of on humans, flora and fauna have been well documented [1-5]. As a consequence, many papers have been written on the prospective handling of arsenic-bearing waste. These can largely be divided into: (a) cleanup of arsenic-contaminated water using bacteria, precipitation, and/or UV irradiation to generate arsenic-rich sludges for subsequent immobilisation; (b) cleanup of arsenic-contaminated soil via chemical extraction for immobilisation of the As concentrate; and (c) immobilisation of industrial waste contaminated with As."

"For steel investigation and development, exact knowledge about the microstructural state is required. The information gained from 2D images often can't properly reflect the real 3D microstructural properties. In order to gain reliable information for meaningful models, simulations and correlations, it is necessary to accompany standard metallography with 3D information, which, unfortunately, is very difficult to access. This article presents a procedure for serial sectioning in combination with light optical microscopy. Only standard metallographic tools are employed in combination with image manipulation freeware. 3D microstructural data were extracted from three multiphase steel grades and in two cases virtual 3D-models of microstructural phases were generated.Three Dimensions Of MicrostructuresSince the invention of steel, craftsmen, inventers and engineers tried to improve its properties and tailor them to the requirements of new developments. For systematic development and enhancement of steels, the capability to investigate its inner structure is highly important, because it represents the linchpin between material production and properties. By having an in-depth understanding how production conditions form the microstructure and also how the microstructural state determines the material properties, steel design can be drastically improved. With this knowledge, microstructures can be designed to provide target material properties and process conditions can be identified that form these structures. Due to the key role of microstructure, the capability to gain accurate information about it is indispensable. It is the task of metallography to access and extract descriptive quantitative microstructural data like fractions, sizes, shapes and distributions of the different constituents. The most commonly used investigation tool in metallography is the light optical microscope (LOM). Besides this tool, additional high resolution techniques like Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) or Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) have become increasingly important. With these and other available methods, extensive information on the microstructural state of a material can be gained. Unfortunately, most metallographic methods have a major loss of information systematically built in. Analyses of microstructures are usually performed on surfaces, i.e. on 2D areas that emerge by cutting through the 3D material structure. This means, a complete dimension of information is not taken into account. How serious this reduction of information is and how it can affect interpretation of structures is exemplarily demonstrated in figure 1, which displays the planar structure emerging from a random cut through a simple 3D structure. It is very difficult to deduce or even imagine the original spatial structure from which this projection emerged and it is impossible to reconstruct it with absolute certainty without further information. The image has emerged from a random cut through a 3D structure of stacked cubes that is displayed in figure 2. The area shown in figure I is outlined. Although artificially constructed, this example demonstrates how distorted and misleading the view on structures can become by ignoring a spatial dimension."

Lead smelting at Cookson Industrial Materials was formerly carried out using a combination of Blast and Reverberatory Furnaces. In the late 70' s these furnaces were replaced by two 20 tonne capacity Rotary Furnaces. This furnace type has proved to be more flexible in the range of feedstock that can be processed, including lead drosses, battery plate and even whole batteries. High rates of production have been achieved whilst attaining a good level of environmental control. The majority of the sulphur in the feedstock can be fixed by use of appropriate fluxes.

Over 25 years of US research in Mineral Recovery from Geothermal Solutions have lead to few commercial applications. With the World Bank program in Kamchatka, Russia in September 2005 a step was taken to vitalize and coordinate the many efforts to advance economic mineral recovery systems worldwide. The US Department of Energy is helping to spur on the interest and research needed to realize the many benefits of extracting minerals from geothermal solutions. The excitement of recovery of minerals from geothermal brines has many positive angles. The economics of certain geothermal site is improved if a revenue is arrived from a sellable commodity with the geothermal power. The use of cleaner geothermal brines also improves the capable use of the brine before reinjection. We will review the history of Geothermal in the USA and the opportunities for recovery of different minerals and the markets for them.

Convential smelting of copper - cobalt - iron sulphide concentrates result in th eoxidation of cobalt and iron, which are subsequently lost into the slag. The emission of SO2 bearing gas from smelting causes serious health and environmentsl problems. In this investigation, three different types of copper - cobalt - iron sulphide concentrates, derived from froth flotation, were investigated, the concentrates, each containing more than 40 wt % percent gangue material, were directly reduced in the presence of lime and corbonin the temperature rnage of 1073 K - 1573 K, fo rthe production of an alloy containing copper, cobalt and iron. We demonstrate the basic principles of process physical chemistry for the recovery of alloy by carrying out a detailed process analysis utilising the predictions from thermodynamic equilibrium and results from the kinetics of reduction reaction. The effect of temperature on the reduction kinetics and alloy formation were determinedand analyzed in detail.

In order to decrease the voltage required for electrorefining, a recessed electrode cell has been developed in which the anode and cathode have recesses machined into their faces. The anode and cathode plates are separated by a thin refractory cloth and the cell is filled with fused salt. Bismuth containing 10 to 90 % lead with copper and silver as minor impurities has been electrorefmed at a current density of 10,000 to 20,000 Am-2. The cell voltage was between 285 and 635 millivolts and the bismuth was refined to a purity of 99.9 %. Flow patterns were observed in a room temperature model of the recessed channel cell using water and mercury to simulate molten metal and the fused salt electrolyte. The flow in the electrode recesses is characterized by discrete droplets when the liquid flow rate is low and thin streams and rivulets at higher flow rates.

"As essential equipment in the metallurgical industry, current air heat exchangers cannot meet the requirements of high temperature heat transfer. In this paper, an energy efficient air heat exchanger, based on accumulation of the heat generated by microwave absorbing materials, is presented according to heat transfer theory and principles of the microwave field. A tubular shaped heat exchanger was designed and built up through temperature-rising curve, and experimental research of microwave high-temperature air heat exchangers was carried out. It was found from experiments that the tubular shaped heat exchanger fabricated using material B could be used for high temperature heat transfer system, and equilibrium temperatures could reach up to 457—485?.IntroductionHeating or cooling of air by heat exchangers is commonly practiced in a wide range of industries including construction, chemical, machinery, textile, printing, and dyeing [1-3]. Generally such heating or cooling of air is achieved in pipe heat exchangers. There are several drawbacks for such heat exchangers, namely, (i) the limitation of temperature to which the pipes can be heated, (ii) tendency to oxidize at high temperature, and (iii) poor strength of metallic pipes at high temperature. These limitations do not allow pipe heat exchangers to be operated at high temperatures [4-6].Microwave heating of inert solids, which are stable at high temperature, is a possible solution to achieve high temperature of the medium in air heat exchangers. It is well-known that microwave heating is an efficient, clean, safe, easy-to-control heating method. Microwave heating utilizes the dielectric and magnetic properties of a material. When microwaves penetrate and spread into the dielectric material, electrons, ions, etc move in the internal electromagnetic field, while the elasticity of inertia and friction impede these movements. This results in a significant thermal effect, increasing the surface temperature rapidly [7-8]. This paper studies mainly design and experimental research of microwave high-temperature air heat exchanger."

"A quantitative tool has been developed to assess the impact of changes in recycling rates on the environmental impact of aluminum supply. It has been applied to the USA to forecast sources of aluminum scrap and to examine the impact of an increase in Old Scrap recovery on the USA supply system and the subsequent effect on the Life Cycle Impact of aluminum supply. The reported data for primary, secondary and import/export supply and product shipments for aluminum in the USA show a fairly good balance between supply and demand on average over the years. Therefore, it is reasonable to use the data, along with published estimates of average product lives, recycling rates and recoveries to draw conclusions about future aluminum scrap generation· and recovery. The Life Cycle Impacts of increasing post-consumer recovery rates to recover an additional 450,000 MT/yr (1 billion lb/yr) has been estimated using the model.The spreadsheet model upon which this work was based was developed in U.S. Customary units. Converting the figures to Metric units would have required converting the entire model and rebuilding the figures. I have chosen to leave the figures in U.S. Customary units. A catalysis pair of tetralin dehydrogenation / naphthalene hydrogenation has been proposed in the present paper as a liquid organic hydride for operating stationary fuel cells. Catalytic naphthalene hydrogenation, having been commercialized since the 1940s, proceeds to generate decalin via tetralin as an intermediate. The storage capacities of tetralin (3.0 wt%, 28.2 kg-H2 / m3) are lower than decalin (7.3 wt%, 64.8 kg-H2 / m3) but both tetralin dehydrogenation and naphthalene hydrogenation are much faster than the decalin / naphthalene pair. Moreover, existing infrastructures such as gas stations, chemical tankers and tank lorries are available for storage, transportation and supply of hydrogen. With respect to the stationary fuel cells with large space for hydrogen storage, tetralin as a hydrogen carrier is superior to decalin in terms of fast hydrogen supply or power density. Rapid hydrogen supply from tetralin under mild conditions was only accomplished with the carbon-supported metal catalysts in the ?superheated liquid-film states? under reactive distillation conditions. In contrast to the ordinary suspended states, the catalyst layers superheated in the liquid-film state gave high catalytic performances at around 250OC. As a consequence, both serious coke formation over the catalyst surface and excessive consumption of exergy were prevented simultaneously.
