The most important lithium resource in the United States is in the form of the feldspathoid mineral spodumene. This mineral has not been used to any important extent as a source of lithium salts or lithium metal, as other more easily decomposed minerals have been available in sufficient quantity to supply the relatively small demand. The need for cheaper lithium salts for such promising new uses as air conditioning or dehumidification and of lithium feldspar for use in the glass and [ramic] trades has justified the recent work done by the Bureau of Mines on [king] available, through improved beneficiation and extractive processes, some of the lower grade but extensive spodumene deposits.

Gwynfynydd is a small, high-grade black shale-hosted vein-gold deposit. The Chidlaw Link Zone is the only area being mined and contains 24 000 t ore grading 15.2 g/t gold. Within the Link Zone a complex vein structure occurs consisting of a mother vein up to 5 m thick and narrow (less than 0.5 m) leader veins. The former shows minor variations in dip, strike and thickness, whereas the latter show marked changes in all three. The leader veins are hosted within the footwall zone of the mother vein and both are composed of quartz with galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and minor arsenopyrite. The vein system is transected by a series of cross-vein and intra-vein dip-slip faults. Pockets of gold occur at vein intersections or branches and within the complex footwall zone and are often related to variations in vein attitude and/or geometry. The Chidlaw Link Zone displays a complex, erratic distribution of gold mineralisation and a multi-stage history of structural activity, fluid flow and mineral deposition

A two year study into the effects of coal mining induced subsidence on cliff lines was undertaken by the Department of Mineral Resources with the support of a grant under the National Energy Research, Development and Demonstration Program. A new monitoring technique, using an Electronic Distance Meter and acrylic reflectors attached to the cliffs, provided safety for the surveyors and extensive and accurate three dimensional displacement data on the movement of the cliffs as they were being undermined. The study report included many graphs showing the measured vertical and horizontal displacements, differential subsidence, tilts and strains and included analysis of these movements with various parameters, such as, seam thickness, depth of cover and distances between the reflectors, longwall face and the edge of the chain pillar. Some of these graphs are presented in this paper and could be used, with caution, to predict subsidence movements around other cliff lines, after allowing for differences in geology and mining layout. A mechanism is suggested as an explanation for the observed high horizontal movements around the cliff lines. Sixteen percent of the overall lengths of cliffs that were undermined during the monitoring study fell and the contributions of various factors that appeared to influence the cliff falls are discussed. It is concluded that no single factor dominated as the major cause of the cliff falls and, often, many factors combined to cause cliff face instability.

This circular describes the activities and publications of the Bureau of Mines, Explosives Research Laboratory4 for the fiscal year 1960 (July 1, 1959 -June 30, 1960). Part 1 describes briefly the principal projects that were active during the report period, and presents some data not scheduled for publication elsewhere in the near future. Certain of the results are only preliminary and should be regarded as tentative, pending the findings of the completed investigation. Publications that appeared during the report period are listed and described briefly in part 2. In general, the research activities reported in these publications antedate fiscal year 1960. The published material relating to activities that are still current is indicated by references in part 1.

In the Integrated IT Systems proposed by Przedsie? biorstwo Robót Geologiczno-Wiertniczych—Geological and Drilling Company (PRGW) a network connects a database with all of the departments of a mining division. A key element thereof is the common graphics environment—Micro Station supplied by the firm, Bentley. PRGW’s SoftMine software and GMSI’s CadsMine that are used to design and schedule mining operate in this environment. The digital form of the design project facilitates the verification of information and the integration of technical solutions with SAP R/3 type financial—accounting systems. The system has been successfully implemented in the Brown Coal Mine in Poland.

Ground support performance is critical to the safe and economical extraction of ore. This is particularly important for mass mining extractions at great depth, which are currently being considered by a large number of mining companies worldwide. As the in situ stresses concentrate around critical excavations, failure occurs at the excavation boundaries and ground support is required for the excavations to remain safe and accessible for their intended lifespan. Ground support consists of reinforcing elements that are installed within the rock mass to modify its internal behaviour (generally to within one excavation radius) and surface support elements that are installed at the exposed boundaries to retain the failed pieces of rock. For surface support to be effective, the loadings need to be transferred to the reinforcing elements; however, the combined performance of rock bolts and mesh is poorly understood in terms of the energy dissipation capacity available for a typical ground support scheme implemented at most mass mining operations.Over the last 15 years or so, a large number of large-scale laboratory experiments have been completed at the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) Dynamic Test Facility for reinforcement systems and surface support systems loaded separately. The objective of more recent testing has been to establish the combined energy dissipation capacity of typical and enhanced reinforcement systems combined with mesh surface support. Total energy dissipation has been separated into energy dissipation attributable to the reinforcement and to the mesh. THE world's largest known oil deposit lies in northern Alberta. In fact, according to government estimates, the famous so-called 'tar sands' of the Athabaska region contain several times as much oil as all the other proved reserves of the world. S. C. Ells, of the Department of Mines and Resources, who has been the Dominion Government's authority on the oil sands since 1913, has estimated the minimum content of the deposits at 100 billion barrels(!). C. P. Bowie, of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, has published an estimate of 250 billion barrels(2). ?In comparison, the latest authoritative estimate of the proved oil-field reserves of the world is less than 35 billion barrels(3). Out of this tremendous total, perhaps 500 million barrels are commercially available at present-day costs and prices; the remainder must be considered a latent reserve to be used when development costs are materially lower and petroleum prices materially higher than they now are. Mean-while, the 500-million-barrel portion presently available contains more oil than has been found in all the rest of Canada, and constitutes one of Canada's great mineral resources. Although these deposits have been known to white men since 1788, when Peter Pond, the explorer, found the Indians stewing the oil out of the sand and mixing it with spruce pitch to caulk their canoes, they are only now coming into commercial production. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the deposits, their oil content, their present development, and the possibilities that seem to lie immediately ahead. For the sake of completeness and clarity, the writer has not hesitated to use or to paraphrase material that he has previously published elsewhere in discussing various aspects of the oil sands.

Conveyors are a highly effective means of transporting material over long distances. Recently there has been a trend toward long conveyor systems with high capacity single flights. These conveyor systems are an efficient alternative to costly truck fleets. Also with deeper mines, the use of diesel driven trucks becomes more difficult. Another trend is in underground mining, where conveyors are an efficient alternative to drift hoists or dedicated rail systems.

To understand why some companies excel in creating value, Jim Collins (2001) and a group of postgraduate business students engaged in a comprehensive, five-year research project. They examined 1,435 U.S. companies for more than 40 years, seeking those that made significant improvements in their financial performance over time. The distinctive pattern sought was: ?Fifteen-year cumulative stock returns at or below the general stock market, punctuated by a transition point, then cumulative returns at least three times the market over the next 15 years. ?The search identified 11 outperforming companies, all in different industries, that were called the ?good to great? companies. To contrast these companies with similar peers within the same industry, the search also selected a group of comparison companies that failed to make the leap from good to great. Collins then set out to examine the transition point. What distinguishing features did the good-to-great companies have that their industry counterparts did not? At the heart of the findings about these outstanding companies is what Collins refers to as the ?hedgehog concept? ? how to find the one big thing that the company must focus on. According to Collins, those who built the good-to-great companies were, to one degree or another, hedgehogs. Those who led the comparison companies tended to be foxes, never gaining the clarifying advantage of a hedgehog concept, being instead scattered, diffused and inconsistent. This insight is complemented by Peter Drucker (2004), an influential management guru, who asserts that the first question an effective executive should ask is: ?what needs to be done?? Asking this question and taking it seriously, he asserts, is crucial for managerial success; and that the answer almost always has more than one urgent task, but the effective leader only concentrates on one task. In this last respect, Drucker emphasizes: ?If they [executives] are among the sizeable minority who work best with a change of pace in the working day, they pick two tasks. I have never encountered an executive who is effective while tackling more than two tasks at a time.?

It is well known that the electrochemical precipitation of metals from aqueous solutions is conducted by the electrochemical standard potential scale. This scale indicates the order of nobility of different metals. Consequently, the standard potential scale shows the nocivity of metals when they are present as impurities in aqueous solutions containing metals. In the hydrometallurgy of cobalt, nickel and zinc are co-deposited during cobalt electrodeposition. Nickel has almost the same chemical, physical and electrochemical properties as cobalt. Furthermore, the electrochemical potential of nickel is relatively higher than that of cobalt. For this reason nickel is preferentially reduced at the cathode in the presence of cobalt. The presence of small amounts of zinc in solution leads to contamination of cobalt electro won. In spite of its lower electrochemical potential in comparison to cobalt, zinc is reduced on the cathode because of its higher hydrogen-overvoltage. But, in the hydrometallurgy of zinc, small amounts of cobalt present into solution will contaminates the zinc reduced at the cathode. This is easily explained by the fact that cobalt is more electropositive than zinc. The co-deposition mechanism of sulphur at the cathode is not yet well understood. Great attention has to be paid to the mechanism of co-deposition of sulphur during cobalt electrolysis..This work aimed to investigate the influence of some parameters on the co-deposition of nickel, zinc and sulphur during cobalt electrowinning. The following parameters have been investigated : Co2+ concentration in the electrolyte, current density and ammonium sulphate (NH4)2SO4 additions. It has been established that important nickel, zinc and sulphur co-deposition takes place at relatively low Co2+ concentration in solution. The behaviour of these elements with regard to the cathodic phenomena has been established.

In the condition that drilling and blasting technique is inevitable depending on the rock mass and material characteristics on mining activities, the fragmentation rate and particle size distribution of the muckpile after blasting has important influences on the performance of subsequent mining activities such as loading, hauling, crushing, grinding etc. and the total costs of that mine. Drilling and blasting is an important step in this process chain and it's results such as fragmentation, muckpile shape and looseness, dilution, damage and rock softening effect the efficiency of downstream processes. There is an increasing body of blasting research indicating significant impacts in these downstream processes.

"Kell is a hydrometallurgical treatment option for the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs), gold, silver, and base metals from flotation concentrates to refined products on site. The process is cyanidefree, while eliminating emissions of sulphur dioxide, arsenic trioxide, and other toxic species often emitted by smelters and roasters. Kell has been tested on a range of concentrates, including PGMs (UG2, Merensky, Platreef, Great Dyke, Great Lakes, Lake Superior and others), refractory gold-silver, coppergold, and polymetallic concentrates. High extraction efficiencies (>95%) are achieved for value metals (Pt, Pd, Rh, Au, Ag, Ni, Cu, Co) and secondary metals (Sb, Zn, Pb, and others). Studies comparing Kell with smelter-refining show economic benefits: capex 18–33% of smelting; opex 51–66%; electricity consumption 13–46%; and environmental benefits: greenhouse gas emissions 57–61% of smelting, acidification 5–27%, human toxicity 37–62%, and freshwater ecotoxicity 43–55% of smelting. Synergies for Kell plants alongside smelter-refineries include utilization of recovered acid from sulphur abatement systems and excess capacity in precious metal refineries. Kell is unconstrained by concentrate grade and impurities, allowing the co-location of Kell plants for treatment of non-smeltable concentrates alongside existing smelters.Kell has been demonstrated in a nine-week integrated pilot campaign at 1:1000 scale, supporting a bankable feasibility study for a 110 000 t/a plant treating a UG2-Merensky concentrate at Pilanesberg Platinum Mine (PPM), owned by Sedibelo Platinum Ltd, which has along with South African Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), invested in Kell. Zimbabwean Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with KellTech for a centralized PGM concentrate processing plant."

This paper presents an analysis of fracture depth and intensity due to subsidence over the longwall panel. Sonic reflection techniques were utilized to determine fracture depth, and a variation of p-wave velocity was used as an indication of the fracture intensity. Instrumentation has been tested for consistency and accuracy first in the laboratory using small scale models, then applied in the field in two mine sites with different mining geometry and geologic conditions. A new sonic viewer was utilized for sonic velocity measurements. Regular hammering method was on acoustic source. The results were concurrent with monitored horizontal strain profiles and measured open fractures over the longwall panels.

The Greymouth Coalfield contains New Zealand's greatest known resource of bituminous rank coal. The coals are of very high quality, with low ash and sulphur contents and a range of other properties that makes them desirable for a wide range of uses. In fact only a few producers around the world today can offer coals with such exceptional properties. This suggests that Greymouth coal has potential as a premium export trading commodity. These assertions have been largely confirmed by a comprehensive exploration drilling programme funded by Mines Division û Ministry of Energy between 1979 and 1984. The program, forming part of the NZ Coal Resources Survey, was carried out under contract by Lime and Marble Ltd. The drilling of 49 deep, predominantly cored, holes at 1000 m intervals over the coalfield has generated a vast amount of data. It has shown the existence of three major potentially minable coal deposits containing 233 x 106, 33 x 106 and 15 x 106 tonnes of coal in ground. Investigations have at this stage only identified targets and these estimates represent 'in ground' resources, not recoverable reserves. Recent geological studies as well as past and present mining have clearly highlighted the problems posed by the complexity of the coalfield geology. The coalfield lies within a mobile zone in the earth's crust known as the Paporoa Tectonic Zone, which has been active from at least mid-Cretaceous to the present time. Currently this factor poses the greatest obstacle to the determination of mining possibility of the, defined deposit and ultimately will strongly influence any future mining development. The Greymouth Coalfield has, however, had a long and eventful mining history spanning the last 120 years, where 32.5 x 106 tonnes of coal has been won from over 100 mines. In spite of the problems facing development, the large quantities and exceptional quality of the remaining coal will act as a strong inducement to persevere with this difficult but potentially valuable resource.

The Phu Kham copper-gold operation located in Laos People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. PanAust Limited, based in Brisbane Australia, holds a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining Limited, with the remaining 10 per cent held by the Government of Laos PDR.The 12Mt/y copper-gold concentrator at Phu Kham commenced production in April 2008. Flotation copper and gold recovery from commissioning was consistently poor, due to the high levels of pyrite and problematic secondary and oxide copper species and non-sulfide gangue.The low recoveries of copper and gold from Phu Kham were recognised during the feasibility study design phase. A bulk sulfide flotation regime in roughing produced high recoveries, however a large capacity cleaning circuit was required and there was risk of not meeting saleable concentrate grade specifications. The installed design offered a capital efficient compromise to ensure that a concentrate grade of 24% copper could be achieved at acceptable recoveries.Incremental improvements in copper recovery were achieved by 2011 through conversion of conditioning cells to flotation cells in both roughing and first cleaning and increased cleaner capacity through the installation of a Jameson cell. In 2012 the Phu Kham Upgrade Project was commissioned to increase mill throughput, along with additional rougher and cleaner capacity to increase residence times at the nominal 16 Mt/y throughput. The marginal reduction in primary grind size due to the additional ball milling power also provided a small recovery improvement.This paper presents the development, design, implementation, and performance of the Increased Recovery Project commissioned in April 2013 which targeted the major causes of copper loss from the circuit. Based on fundamental and detailed test work and mineralogical analysis of concentrator streams, an optimised design was developed which has increased copper and gold recoveries by over 5% and 10% respectively. The Increased Recovery Project has positioned the concentrator to process high pyrite ores that were previously considered untreatable, and opened further opportunities for maximising flotation recovery by de-bottlenecking plant regrind and cleaning capacity.CITATION:Hoyle, A, Bennett, D and Walker, P, 2015. The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) recommends that the upper 1.22 m (4 ft) of spoil material on reclaimed surfaces should be left as uncompacted as possible to facilitate efficient tree root growth. However, the main concerns about applying the FRA to steep slopes is that the upper 1.22 m (4 ft) of loose spoil material could cause instability. Successful application of the FRA on the flat and rolling surfaces precipitated this investigation. Details of a field investigation conducted at a steep-slope mine site are available in an earlier publication (Kumar and Sweigard, 2011). A total of 70 survey monuments were driven into the slope in a regular pattern to monitor any type of slope movement. Quarterly surveying of the monuments were done to quantify slope movement, either horizontally or vertically. The methodology developed in this research for field slope movement monitoring was validated using computer model results. Analytical models based on the limit equilibrium method (LEM) and numerical models based on the finite element method (FEM) were developed for slope stability analysis. The LEM analysis was done using the Geo-Slope/W program following the simplified Bishop method. However, numerical models were developed using the PLAXIS computer program following the Mohr’s Coulomb failure criterion and strength reduction technique. The slope stability analysis was performed for two different scenarios: first with the top 1.22 m (4 ft) of loose graded spoil material and second without top loose graded spoil material. Finally, the field investigation results were compared with stability analysis results. Both of these approaches showed that application of the FRA on steep slopes is not causing any significant instability problems, due to 1.22 m (4 ft) loose graded spoil that would not exist otherwise for overly steepened slopes.

This study aimed to produce magnesium oxide (MgO) particles with different properties from dolomite ore using an experimental procedure comprising four stages: sample preparation (S1), HCl leaching (S2), precipitation (S3), and calcination (S4). Three different base sources (NaOH, KOH, and NH4OH) were used as precipitant in the third stage to obtain magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] from a leachate solution, which was obtained in the second stage. Next, Mg(OH)2 particles generated by different alkali sources were calcined at various temperatures from 600–1000 °C for different durations (1–5 h). The effect of these base types on the properties of each product was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and wet chemical analyses. The experimental results indicated that each product was identified as periclase (MgO) mineral, which was produced with a specific surface area (SSA) of 4.49–44.54 m2 /g depending on the production conditions. The surface roughness of the MgO particles increased with increasing calcination temperature. SEM analyses showed that MgO particles produced at a temperature of 600 or 800 °C were amorphous, indicating that the process was not influenced by the base type, but MgO crystals were smooth when the calcination temperature was 1000 °C. Finally, it was determined from all experimental findings that MgO particles produced via the addition of NaOH have superior properties (such as higher SSA and lower surface roughness) compared with MgO particles produced with KOH or NH4OH as the alkali source. These properties led to great improvement of its usability in industry.

This study investigates the enrichment of a low-grade colemanite concentrate (-3 mm) using a Knelson centrifugal gravity concentrator. Due to its low boron content, the concentrate is unsaleable and has to be stored under appropriate conditions to avoid potential environmental problems. The low-grade colemanite concentrate was comminuted to size fractions of-1 mm, -0.5 mm, and -0.15 mm before treatment in the Knelson Concentrator. The effects of particle size, fluidizing water velocity, and bowl speed on the enrichment process were examined. The B2O3content of the concentrate was increased from 33.96% to a maximum of 45.52%. B2O3recovery increased with increasing bowl speed and particle size, and decreased with increasing fluidizing water velocity. The enrichment process also rejected arsenic and iron to some extent, with a maximum reduction of arsenic from 1360 g/t to 765 g/t and iron from 0.88% to0.33%.

An overburden handling dragline operation was conducted at a strip mine near Colstrip, Montana. The objective of the demonstration was to determine the degree a dragline could mix overburden inhibitory zones during the spoiling process. In order to quantify the mixing process the overburden was: 1) scatter spoiled; 2) dump spoiled; and 3) spoiled in a normal manner. This demonstration was part of an effort to investigate means of reestablishing non-polluted hydrological systems in areas where surface mining directly impacts shallow ground-water resources. When inhibitory material constituted < 5% of the total overburden volume, such material was essentially not detectable in the resultant spoil pile. When inhibitory material exceeded 15% of the overburden volume it was always found in the resultant spoil pile, generally with a smaller extent, indicating partial dilution. Inhibitory overburden zones often reappeared at the base or top of spoil piles in the potential aquifer and root zones suggesting the need for selective placement procedures. Scatter spoiling did not appear to be significantly more effective than normal spoiling, however clump spoiling seemed to produce less mixing of inimical zones. Mining activity has reduced ground-water levels within 1600 m of the active pit. The aquifer which is developing in spoils appears to have similar confinement characteristics as those that existed in the premined aquifer. To date no definite trends have been observed concerning changes in surface or ground-water chemistry associated with mining.
