Quartz crystals occur on a farm in the vicinity of Laurel Fork, Carroll County, Va., in abundance over a large area, This has been known for several years, but no work had been clone, up to the Bureau of Mines examination in 1943, to determine the amount of crystalline quartz of usable quality. Field exploration was undertaken throughout the month of June 1943.

The southwest wall of the Lornex Pit at the Highland Valley Copper mine has been experiencing slope displacements since 1978. Measures to manage the displacements on previous pushbacks have included stepping out, scheduling pushbacks to unload the crest of unstable areas, slope dewatering and mining with intensive slope monitoring. The final pushback on this wall is currently being mined and substantial modifications to the slope geometry could prove to be uneconomic. As a result, a campaign of surface water collection and diversion, horizontal drainhole drilling and deep well drilling is currently underway to maintain an acceptable degree of stability to the end of mine life. The various factors contributing to instability, including engineering geologic controls, rock mass strength, and surface and groundwater hydrology are presented. Movement trends, displacement magnitudes and stability analyses results are also discussed.

Concepts and equations have been developed to quantitatively determine the stability of a rock bolted coal mine roof as a structural (beam-arch) member consisting of reinforced rock units. The equations take into account: rock bolt tension, length, spacing, and orientation; size of opening, strength and physical properties of the rock; and loads from distressed rock, and were critically reviewed using sensitivity analyses and the results available from relevant previous analytical and physical model investigations. It is concluded that they can essentially be validated by using small scale physical models and the full size mine entry model at the USBM Spokane Research Center. However, a comprehensive research program, including analytical and laboratory investigations and field trials in typical mines, will be required to define and validate criteria and standards for using the equations as a basis for a rational design code for rock reinforcement installations to replace the semi-empirical rules now being used. For example, these studies have shown that the practice of installing vertical roof bolts with a uniform spacing equal to the bolt length is inherently unsafe and that the spacing should be reduced near the walls to prevent shear failure of the roof strata. The development of such a rational design code would provide enhanced safety in coal mining operations and warrants a high priority in the Bureau's ground control research program.

The Physiographical Features of the Region The Middleback; Range proper, from the Iron Duke in the south to the Iron Prince in the north, extends in a meridional direction for 21 miles, but may well be taken to embrace also the Iron Knob and Iron Monarch prominences so that the total length of the Range is 37 miles.Although no great altitudes are reached, the slopes of the high country are steep and the Range stands out prominently above the peneplaned surface of upper Eyre Peninsula. The Range is built up of sub-parallel ridges at some places, and its continuity is interrupted by transverse breaks or gaps resulting from normal stream erosion and corrosion during earlier periods when precipitation was heavier and streams were more active. Traces of high-level gravels remain on the flanks of Kimba Gap. A former mature stream on the western side of the Range has had its lower reaches blocked by sand and the old stream channel has been converted into an eiongated basin of internal drainage. The sand dunes in this area appear to be practically stationary at present, being fixed by mallee vegetation. Their trend is west-northwest.The relief of the Range is regarded as having been determined primarily by meridional strike faulting and selective silification of some of the beds. The objective of this investigation was to determine how the losses of nickel, copper and cobalt in fayalite slags could be controlled for nickel mattes with iron contents below 5 wt%. Laboratory-converting and slag-cleaning experiments were carried out at 1250°C. Several variables were investigated during and after converting to help minimize the amount of nickel and cobalt that reports to the slag. The variables used were oxygen concentration in the blast, coke breeze addition and nitrogen injection stirring. In all the experiments, slag and matte co-existed. Coke additions during converting have little effect on the losses of nickel, copper and cobalt. In fact, coke additions retard the converting process by consuming some of the oxygen injected. On the other hand, coke additions and nitrogen injection applied after converting was completed resulted in decreased slag losses.

An important element of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) mining research program is the development and evaluation of reliable coal interface detection (CID) systems. Commercially available CID sensors based on natural gamma radiation (NGR) are only applicable if the immediate roof is composed of shaley material. The USBM has made numerous underground and laboratory measurements using several NGR systems approved for installation on mining machines by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. In addition, two small handheld NGR instruments were used to make comparative measurements. Underground NGR measurements in 10 different coal seams, potassium-uranium-thorium radiometric analyses on samples from 16 seams, and chemical analyses of coal and rock for correlation with NGR counts were made. Laboratory test results on the effect of air gap and sample thickness, size, and weight on the NGR measurements, as well as general results of the various NGR systems, are discussed.

Premature blasts of charges of explosives have caused many deaths in anthracite mines, and the causes of many of the blasts were not determined satisfactorily. Investigators often found fairly high potential differences between such metallic objects as rails, pipes, conveyor lines, or sheet-iron chutes in the working place where an accident had occurred. At one mine where a premature blast occurred in a rock tunnel, one workman was killed and two others were injured, and several days later a potential difference large enough to explode an electric squib was detected between the compressed-air pipe and the track rail; the voltage fluctuated and appeared to change with the movement of a locomotive. At another mine, a. workman was killed when a primed cartridge that he was about to load in a blast hole exploded in his hand. During the investigation, a potential difference was found between the conveyor line and the sheet-iron chute. During a 5-year Period, 61 fatalities and 771 nonfatal injuries were caused by explosives accidents in anthracite mines, and one of the chief causes of these accidents was premature blasts.

A simplified conceptual model shows how the arc flank to arc fringe areas adjacent to ignimbritic centres form a prospective zone for natural zeolites. Large alkaline lakes that serve as the repository of voluminous ash-fall tuffaceous material provide the ideal chemical setting for pervasive alteration of silicic glass to zeolites. The unusually old age of the Escott deposit demonstrates that any silicic volcanic province that contains low-temperature, unmetamorphosed sequences is a potential zeolite exploration target and that age should not be used as a criterion to exclude potential areas. It has also been demonstrated that heulandite and mordenite, formed by diagenetic alteration of silicic glass, do not always change to analcite and albite through the ageing process

The Japanese government enforced the "Small Domestic Appliances (SDAs) Recycling Law" in 2013. The law targets metals such as Ta, Nd, Dy, Co, and W to be recycled. Considerable amounts of these minor rare metals are mounted on printed circuit boards (PCBs) of the SDAs and/or e-scrap (electric and electronic scraps). Although precious metals and copper can be recovered from the e-scrap in non-ferrous metals smelters, most of the minor rare metals report to the slag in these smelters in non-recoverable forms. These metals are often used in particular types of devices, and therefore it is possible to concentrate them by separating such devices before feeding to the smelters. In previous work we developed technology for "Device Separation" to concentrate several minor rare metals, but some problems remained, such as how to remove the PCBs from e-scrap bodies, and how to detach devices from PCBs after their removal from escrap bodies. This paper proposes a two-stage crushing process in which, firstly, PCBs are removed from the e-scrap body with various crushers, and secondly, devices are detached from the PCBs involving the application of elevated temperatures. It was found that in the first stage, crushers with physically flexible rotating media such as chains, which provide high collision probability with the sample and consume relatively low energy, can quite effectively separate the PCBs from the e-scrap bodies non-destructively. In the second stage, heating was found to be remarkably effective in helping to detach mounted devices from PCBs, also non-destructively. This paper will also discuss the detailed mechanism of the heating effect on the detachment of devices from PCBs.

In This Chapter [Drill dust control: wet and dry Enclosed cabs on drills and mobile equipment Haul road dust control] Overburden drilling generates most of the respirable dust that affects workers at surface mines. Both wet and dry methods are available to reduce this drill dust. Overburden removal by mobile excavation equipment such as bulldozers, front-end loaders, and haulage trucks can be dusty, particularly under dry and windy conditions. Tightly enclosed cabs with dust filtration systems can substantially lower the dust exposure of both drill and mobile equipment operators. Haul road dust control can be achieved by water application or chemical application. DRILL DUST CONTROL [Drill dust is controlled with wet or dry systems. Wet systems can be more efficient, but may freeze in the winter. Dry systems require careful maintenance of the drill deck shroud. An improved deck shroud is shown.] Wet Suppression. Wet drilling systems pump water into the bailing air from a water tank mounted on the drill. The water droplets in the bailing air trap dust particles as they travel up the annular space of the drilled hole, thus controlling dust as the air bails the cuttings from the hole [Page 1991]. In wet drilling systems, typical water flow rates are 0.1 to 2.0 gpm depending on the size and type of drill and the moisture level of the overburden. The drill operator controls the flow using a control valve located in the cab. Some drills are equipped with a flow meter to give the opera-tor a visual sign of the flow rate. Raising the water flow will improve dust capture, but too much water causes operational problems. Because of this, the drill operator must exercise care in find-ing the best water flow rate.

A commercial Philips X-ray Fluorescence (X.R.F.) analyser was converted to an experimental instrument suitable for determination of the accuracy to be expected of X.R.F. on line analyses of concentrator slurries. Problems with stability of slurry sample presentation were eliminated by a number of minor modifications.By the use of multiple linear regression techniques instrument calibration equations including error terms were determined for copper flotation feed slurries. Results indicated that the accuracy of copper and iron analyses of flowing slurry samples could approach that of static pressed powder samples.Possible means of reducing the error terms to a level of at least that of pressed powdel' samples involve alternative methods of compensating for the per cent solids in the slurry, Design is under way for installation of a plant unit.

THE Phillips River gold and 'copper field is situated on the south coast of Western Australia, about 200 miles east of Albany, 180 miles west of Esperance, and: 250 miles south of Southern Cross, forming the southern extremity of what Mr. H. P. Woodward classes as the fourth belt of Pre-Cambrian rocks, and the first auriferous belt, whicf extends northward through Southern Cross, Mount Magnet, and Cue. The field may be considered the premier copper producer of the State. The first mineral discoveries were made about 1892; when gold, copper, and iron pyrites were found; but, owing to the isolation of the district and the scarcity of water, both in the locality and on the route thereto, little work was done for some years. In1899, however, payable gold reefs were opened up, and the district began to attract attention.The southern portion of the district is composed of limestone and sandstone rocks, forming the coastal series, and is for the most part flat, broken only by a few low hills and ridges, except to the west, where Cape Barren and Eyre's Range stand out...

Flotation has long served as the foundation for sulfide mineral recovery. As ore grades decline, however, this traditional approach is being pushed to the limit. Nowhere is this more evident than in the challenge of recovering coarse, partially liberated particles — an area where conventional flotation systems typically underperform due to excessive turbulence. As a result, valuable coarse minerals are often lost to tailings. Fine grinding has become the default solution, although with the added burden of higher operating costs and more challenging tailings disposal. To address the challenge of coarse particle recovery, Eriez developed the HydroFloat, a technology that uses a novel fluidized-bed approach to extend the upper particle size range of flotation significantly. The HydroFloat can recover particles exceeding 0.5 mm in diameter with a sulfide surface expression as little as 2 percent. Coarse particle recovery allows for optimization of comminution circuits for coarse gangue rejection before fine grinding. A substantial increase in overall tailings particle size provides higher water recovery due to improved drainage and allows for consideration of a dry, stacked tailings option instead of a tailings dam/impoundment. The technology’s transformative potential has not gone unnoticed. In recognition of its impact, Eriez was honored with the 2024 Robert E. Murray Innovation Award, commonly referred to as the Murray Award, by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration. This prestigious award was established in 2017 to recognize organizations that advance the mining industry through the implementation of technical innovation. Barrick Goldstrike mine utilizes a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit to simultaneously leach gold into solution with cyanide and adsorb the gold-cyanide complex onto activated carbon for further refinement. If the gold bearing ore contains a significant amount of native carbonaceous material, gold cyanide can be adsorbed at these sites instead of onto the desired activated carbon and the gold is effectively lost to tailings in a detrimental process known as "preg-robbing." The preg-rob effect is considerably reduced by treating the ore with a surfactant, which is hypothesized to adsorb to and passivate the native carbon surfaces. Past laboratory and pilot studies have consistently demonstrated significant gains in gold recovery after treating carbonaceous ore with surfactant. With success in bench and pilot scale testing, a plant trial was conducted at Barrick Goldstrike to evaluate the feasibility of using an alkoxylated fatty amine surfactant (Ethomeen T/12) to aid in the leaching of high preg-robbing ores. This paper analyzes the performance of the surfactant during the plant trial in addition to the problems that occurred during the trial period. Suggestions for improvement are also discussed.

The toughness and fracture mechanisms of ores with significantly different microstructures from Yandi, Koolan and Mount Whaleback were studied with a view to understanding their degradation behaviour. Bulk fracture toughness was determined by the 3-point single-edge notch beam test and the results interpreted using Weibull statistical analysis; indentation fracture mechanics was also used to measure fracture toughness of the different mineral forms and to understand their response to contact fracture

"Recently, Antamina has completed an expansion program of its operations which increased the thoughput in grinding from acapacity of 109 to 130 ktpd. After commissioning, throughput could be exceeded in grinding and downstream processes but primary crushing became a major bottleneck to the overall production process.With an objective to increase the processing capacity of the primary crusher system, a multidisciplinary team was formed with members of Mine, Concentrator and Maintenance departments, who analyzed the overall context of this process restriction. The main implementations developed were: automatic discharge systems of trucks, logic to count trucks and elaboration of a daily performance report. Following implementation of developed improvements, the numbers of discharged trucks to crusher were increased from 449 to 614 units per day. As a result, the expansion target of 130 ktpd was exceeded and processing capacity was increased from 109 ktpd to 145 ktpd. This improvement adds very significant economical value for Antamina.INTRODUCTIONAntamina is a copper-zinc mine located in the Peruvian Andes. Compañía Minera Antamina is owned by BHP Billiton (33.75%), Xstrata (33.75%), Teck Cominco (22.5%), and Mitsubishi (10%). The mine was commissioned in 2001 with a capital investment of US$2.3 billion, and had a nominal 77,000 ktpd mill capacity. Mining, milling, flotation, and tailings impoundment take place at the mine site, which sits at an altitude of 4,300 m above sea level. The deposit is a polymetallic skarn ore body with intrusive phases of quartz-monzonite porphyry into Cretaceous aged limestone. Copper is present mainly as chalcopyrite with a minor bornite component. Zinc is present as sphalerite. Molybdenum is present as molybdenite. Some lead, bismuth, and silver are associated with the sulphides. The deposit is currently classified into six main ore types [Dechert, 2006], grouped into two categories: copper and copper-zinc. The mill produces four concentrate types: copper, molybdenum, zinc, and lead-bismuth. Copper and zinc, concentrates are transported by pipeline down to the port of Huarmey. Molybdenum and lead-bismuth concentrates are bagged and trucked to port."

New Zealand can be regarded as a rifted part of mineral-prospective eastern Australia. Geologically credible comparisons between selected trans-Tasman and SW Pacific geological provinces and units, especially those that contain significant mineralisation in Australia, can help provide a useful exploration framework for New Zealand. As part of a six-year Mineral Wealth of NZ and its EEZ (MWE) research programme, we have targeted selected geological units in eastern Australia for comparison and contrast with their potential New Zealand counterparts. In future years, the programme will focus on geological units in New Caledonia.

"In the course of its investigations pertaining to the promotion of safety the Bureau of Mines is actively engaged in investigating all promising materials that may be of value in rendering methane or other combustible gases, vapors, or solids less inflammable.Added substances are of value if such additions narrow the limits of inflammability, raise the ignition temperature, lower the speed of propagation of flame, or reduce the maximum pressure developed. Of major importance is the effect of added materials on the limits of inflammability, because methane is the chief combustible s liberated in mines, considerable work has been done with extinguishing agents on methane flames. For obvious reasons, a substance to be of value for the extinction flames should be a gas, or a liquid having a sufficient vapor pressure to give concentrations of the vapor in sufficient amounts to extinguish the flames or markedly narrow the limits of inflammability. The substance should be nontoxic, cheap, and noncorrosive and must be incombustible. Solids, such as rock dust, are undesirable and of little value for combustible gases because they soon settle out of the atmosphere, and their flame- extinguishing value is thereby lost. There are at present only a few gases and vapors-for example, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and carbon tetrachloride-which meet these requirements.The extinction of methane flames by nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and argon has been reported by Coward and Hartwell 4; the extinction by water vapor by Coward and Gleadell 5, and the extinction by helium and carbon tetrachloride by Coward and Jones 6."

A glance at the accompanying table reveals that for the first time in many years the industrial minerals field did not post significant gains in production. Gypsum, cement, sand and gravel, and crushed stone production-which are very sensitive to construction industry performance-barely managed to stay even, or in fact, declined slightly. Even barite production, in spite of increased oil and gas drilling, was off 5% in 1979 from 1978. Domestic fluorspar production continued to decline while imports, primarily from Mexico, South Africa, and Spain, rose 11%. Worldwide production of iodine (which is used primarily as a catalyst, animal feed additive, and in ink and colorants, stabilizers, pharmaceuticals, photographic film, and disinfectants) grew about 9% on a worldwide basis-from 10.75 Tg to 11.16 Tg. This does not include US production. The two US producers increased demand as apparent domestic production increased about 5%. Increasing energy costs and the transportation situation have had a prohibitive effect on the industrial minerals field. The critical shortage of railroad cars, according to consultant Neil Johnson, is due to several factors: • High capital investment rind interest rates needed to build new equipment, • Accidents, obsolescence, and failure to repair equipment reduced car availability, •Reduction in some train schedules due to fuel economy, and •Increased turnaround time as a result of new safety regulations. Railroad rates have increased an average of 7% per year for the past 10 years. Last year's increases were about 11.1% due to fuel costs and surcharges. Truck shipments have increased their penetration in certain areas of the southeast because of the shortage of box cars and the producers' demand for quick shipment. Some producers report a 15-20% increase in truck use. In the feldspar-mica area, which formerly made most shipments by rail, trucks are now used for about half the shipments. Marketing prices, as expected, increased due to higher costs for energy, power, labor, and supplies used in production. Estimated average price increases were about 10% which, in many cases, did not cover increased production costs. These factors-rising energy costs and the critical transportation situation-resulted in an unsatisfactory year for industrial minerals. Stanley J. Lefond Cnntrihuting Editor
