Through its more than 40-year history, the avalauncher has gone through many changes yet continues to prove its worth in avalanche mitigation work.

A SPECIAL meeting arranged by the Petroleum and Gas Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 21 and 22, in the Assembly Room of the American Annex Hotel, St. Louis, Mo. Preceding the first session on Tuesday morning, the members and guests were registered and presented with the usual Institute badges. The morning session was opened at 10:30 by Ralph Arnold of Los Angeles, Calif., Chairman of the Petroleum and Gas Committee. In his opening remarks, he suggested that the petroleum section specialize more and more on the technical problems of the oil industry and that an effort be made to enlarge the membership of the Institute among the technical men of the industry. The following program was presented : OIL FIELDS OF RUSSIA, by A. Beeby Thompson and T. G. Madgwick, of London, England. Presented by H. A. Wheeler; discussed by Arthur Knapp and R. VanA. Mills. This most comprehensive paper was one of what is hoped to be a series to be presented by some of our foreign members. It is by far the best description in English of the world-famous Baku and other fields of Russia.

The geotechnical design, construction, and monitoring aspects of a tied back excavation 85 feet deep in Seattle, Washington are presented. The excavation was completed in overconsolidated deposits of sand, silt, and clay. Lateral soil pressures used in shoring wall design were the lowest to date for an excavation of this size in Seattle. Instrumentation data collected from hydraulic load cells and inclinometers were analyzed and are discussed. The data suggest the actual soil pressures felt by the wall were lower than the design values. Recommendations for future study, as well as future design modifications are given.

Approximation of Surface Area of Fines in Blast Induced Fragmentation The surface area of fragmentation, especially in the finer size fractions, is a useful property to characterise the mechanisms of rock breakage. In the past, researchers have made assumptions with regard to the shape of fragments in order to estimate surface area, such as that all fragments are the same shape or all fragments are spheres. Often these assumptions were developed with inappropriate measures and returned considerable variability and error for the calculation of surface area. This paper reports a model to estimate fragmentation surface area from sieve sized raw data and a density measurement, with experimental validation down to a size fraction of -45 + 38 ?m in a range of rock types. After characterisation of particle shape, a range of fragment shapes was found to be in each size fraction. Nevertheless, in the ?2 sieve series the average fragment mass, volume and the size fraction standard deviations could be predicted reasonably accurately. Ellipsoid geometry was used to describe particle shape. Using these parameters and the number of fragments (also predicted) in each sieve size the individual surface area of each fragment was simulated.

When the Trelleborg Divisions of Boliden Allis and MPSI merged, a unique opportunity occurred for two independent mill fabricators to compare various design procedures and the research upon which they were based. This paper documents such a comparison in the structural design area. Several SAG mill analyses are compared using both Boliden Allis and MPSI methods. The differences and similarities are then utilized in a correlation of critical stress definitions and the acceptable design and inspection criteria.

Waste phosphatic clay presents a difficult disposal problem and a significant loss of P2O5. Recent developments make this study on the use of phosphatic clay as a feed material for H3PO4 production worthwhile. (a) New data from Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute (FIPR) suggest that the Bclay^ waste can be effectively treated by improved solid separation coupled with flotation to produce feed material for recovering additional phosphate. (b) The use of BOLI Flowsheet^ provides capability to predict performance of aqueous-based processes for a range of possible operating conditions. Using the new FIPR data and BOLI Flowsheet^ enabled the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current P2O5 ore deposits. Predictions using OLI Flowsheet were able to identify process conditions that effectively overcome the difficulty of high Mg content of phosphatic clay. Estimated manufacturing cost in the current study lead to valuation of the P2O5 content of the phosphatic clay recovered/utilized at 60 to 70% of that of the phosphate rock feed material currently used. Phosphatic clay should be considered as a valuable material that is currently given zero value. The new FIPR data and BOLI Flowsheet^ enables the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current phosphate ore deposits by extending the fraction P2O5 of recovered

O titânio e suas ligas são aplicados em grande escala em implantes ósseos por apresentarem excelentes resultados de biocompatibilidade. No entanto, ainda não existe um consenso na literatura com relação à influência das características morfológicas destes implantes na osseointegração, principalmente na definição da melhor rugosidade e energia superficial. Vários trabalhos têm sido realizados com o intuito de comparar diferentes tratamentos superficiais empregados para otimizar a adesão, o crescimento e a proliferação celular. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar uma base de dados sobre características superfícies versus osseointegração para experimentos de biocompatibilidade realizados in vitro. Foram feitas coletas e análise de dados qualitativos usando métodos analíticos em artigos científicos publicados em periódicos internacionais, sendo considerados na pesquisa artigos que utilizaram superfícies de Ti/TiO2 e células osteoblásticas. Os principais atributos definidos para a base de dados foram rugosidade, tamanho da célula, energia da superfície e/ou ângulo de contato, tipo de tratamento superficial, viabilidade e a resposta observada na cultura celular. Espera-se que esse artigo contribua para que futuros trabalhos possam utilizar métodos e estudos que permitam auxiliar na descoberta de conhecimento através de padrões que acelerem o processo de osseointegração impactando diretamente na recuperação do paciente implantado e na sua qualidade de vida.

Development and Validation of Ore Characterisation Test and its Use in Variability Campaigns of Comminution Circuits Impact testing was developed by assessing the fragmentation characteristics of ore samples after controlled impact. Standard methods are, however, limited to relatively large and coarse samples, which thus precludes their use in early stages of projects, as well as where only drill cores are available. The method described in this paper is based on the same concepts of controlled ore breakage, but using relatively smaller samples. It is particularly useful in assessing the variability of ore characteristics in early stages of greenfield projects, as well as in predicting the performance of existing grinding circuits. A validation program was carried out in which a good adherence to the original test results was obtained. The results were used for (a) simulation of a copper comminution circuit as a function of the ore characteristics, and (b) evaluation of sampling protocols used for assessing fragmentation characteristics.

Investigou-se a extração seletiva de Ca e Mg do licor sulfúrico concentrado de Ni visando sua purificação. Observou-se que a mistura sinérgica dos extratantes D2EHPA + ácido naftênico apresenta maior afinidade na extração de Ca em pH = 5. Comportamento oposto foi verificado pelo extratante Cyanex 272, cuja preferência de extração é pelo Mg para 5 = pH = 6. A cinética de extração de Ca e Mg é rápida atingindo o equilíbrio em menos de 6 minutos. A purificação do licor de Ni requer a utilização de 2 circuitos de extração em operações estagiadas. No primeiro circuito, Ca pode ser removido do licor empregando-se o sistema orgânico D2EHPA (10% v/v) + ácido naftênico (20% v/v). O pH ótimo é 3,5, no qual foram extraídos 72% de Ca (ßCa/Ni = 40) em uma contatação. No segundo circuito, o licor deve ser submetido a uma extração de Mg pelo Cyanex 272 (20% v/v). O pH operacional propício é 5,5 com extração de 66% de Mg (ßMg/Ni = 16, uma contatação). O licor purificado de Ni pode ser encaminhado à etapa de eletrorrecuperação almejando-se a obtenção de Ni metálico.

The research described in this report is the first phase of a comprehensive program for the development of a characterization for the structural properties of rock masses. The mathematical expression of the characterization is especial' tailored for use in conjunction with modern structural analysis procedures. The objective of the first phase of the project is to determine the feasibility of representing the structural properties of rock masses in terms of the analysis of an appropriate "representative volume" the results of this investigation are described in detail in the body of the report. The current state-of-the-art concerning the understanding and description of the fundamental mechanisms of rock behavior are determined from a survey of existing literature. The development of a representative volume that captures the most important of these mechanisms is described, In order not to unduly obscure the fundamental aspects of this development, the mathematical analysis of the representative volume is limited to plane strain conditions. A subroutine for the numerical evaluation of the proposed model (i.e., the analysis of the representative volume) is presented. The steps necessary for the incorporation of the subroutine directly into existing two-dimensional finite element structural analysis programs are described. Comparisons between the predictions of the proposed characterization and published results of simple laboratory tests are presented and discussed. Finally recommendations are given concerning suggested improvements of the model and the extension of it to the general three-dimensional case.

Since 1950 Stockton Open Cast Mine has excavated over 60 million tonnes of Brunner Coal Measures overburden sandstones and mudstones. The current operator, Solid Energy New Zealand, recognises that acidic drainage from this overburden and from historic underground mines has led to depressed pH levels and elevated levels of metals in streams draining the Stockton Plateau. These streams report to the Ngakawau River. To quantify the effects of mine site acid drainage remediation/mitigation on the lower Ngakawau River water quality, a catchment hydrogeochemical model has been field calibrated and ecotoxicology tests have been undertaken. The hydrogeochemical model indicates that pre-mining and present pH values in the lower Ngakawau River are similar but present aluminium and iron concentrations are elevated. Ecotoxicology tests have semi-quantified the critical metal concentrations and interim water quality targets to achieve ecological recovery are presented. Analyses of long-term total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity monitoring in the lower Ngakawau River and St Patrick's Stream indicate that TSS of 120 mg/L and turbidity of 20 NTU are exceeded for <20% per cent of the time. Hence, specific criteria to protect migratory native fish from turbid water are currently met in the Ngakawau River and St Patrick's Stream.

The Otter-Juan mine was closed by WMC Resources? Kambalda Nickel Operations (WMC-KNO) in 1999 due to the combined effects of low Nickel prices and high mining costs. GBF Mining Pty Ltd purchased Otter-Juan Mine from WMC in early 2001 as part of WMC?s disinvestment from the nickel mines in the Kambalda area. Goldfields Mine Management (GMM), (a wholly owned subsidiary of GBF Pty Ltd) re-opened Otter-Juan in May 2001. The Otter-Juan mine is one of the oldest mines in the Kambalda region and is now mining at depths below 1160mbs. Stresses are very high, rock mass deformation considerable, and the mine has a history of serious seismic activity. Orebody widths in the current mining area range from 2 to 2.5m, with dips from 25° to 40°. On taking over the operation, GMM converted the mining method from the previous mechanised drift and fill method to a slot-rise and strip method using hand held airlegs. During the latter years of production under the control of WMC, production averaged around 12000 tonnes per month, with grades of 2.7% and orebody extraction of only 55 to 60%. In the last three years of operation under the control of GMM the mine has produced an average of 12000 tonnes per month of ore at an average grade of 4.2% and with an orebody extraction of 70 to 75%. The mine is now highly profitable with at least another 3 years of reserves remaining at depth. The main benefits of the current method include reduced dilution and increased extraction. In the relatively poor ground conditions experienced this has only been possible using airleg mining, with excavations designed to suit conditions, support to suit rockmass deformations, and with improved extraction sequencing. Other benefits have included improved operating conditions, reduced falls of ground incidents and a dramatic reduction in seismic activity. These achievements have only been possible by stepping back in time and using traditional airleg stoping methods to extract the maximum amount of the orebody with minimum dilution. This paper includes details of the mine history, geology, mining method, seismicity, and support.

Blast fragmentation depends on many factors. First of all, it depends on the specific blast design, which includes the amount and type of explosive, the blasting pattern, the timing and sequencing, and other parameters. Secondly, it depends on the properties of the rock mass, including the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), the rock mass elastic modulus (E), the rock discontinuity characteristics (as reflected in the GSI or RMR), and the rock density. Several fragmentation models have been proposed to predict blast fragmentation based on the blast design and the properties of the rock. These models include the Kuz-Ram model and variations of this model, as well as recent models by Kim and Kemeny (2011) and others. Fragmentation models are validated and calibrated by comparing the predicted fragmentation with actual post-blast fragmentation from image processing monitoring systems.

The Hellyer, Fossey, Que River and Mount Charter volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits occur within the Que-Hellyer volcanics of the Mount Read volcanics, Tasmania. These deposits occur along a 6 km strike length and are hosted by the same stratigraphic unit. We use a combination of whole-rock geochemistry, short wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectrometry, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses and compiled historic whole-rock geochemical data to develop district-scale vectors towards VHMS mineralisation.Strongly sericite and K-feldspar altered rocks concentrate along a linear trend from Hellyer, through Que River, to Mount Charter. Ishikawa alteration index values and whole-rock major and trace element concentrations provide exploration vectors towards mineralisation on a regional scale as significant enrichment and depletion trends. On a deposit scale, composition variations in white mica (sericite alteration), chlorite and K-feldspar are observed and reflected in whole-rock geochemical variations. Regional SWIR data from drill core support the prevalence of phengitic mica and high-Mg chlorite within footwall alteration halos and highlight the main upflow zones of hydrothermal fluids in the VHMS district. The combined use of regional whole-rock geochemistry, SWIR and mineral chemistry is an effective way to highlight prospective areas for VHMS mineralisation in a mature exploration province.CITATION:Wu, S, Gemmell, J B, McNeill, A W and Richardson, S M, 2015. This paper presents the results of on-going investigations on the influence of corrosion on the performance of support systems in selected underground gold mines. Rock support is exposed to various conditions that can be aggressive. Samples of corroded support were analysed using SEM and photomicrography to determine the main corrosion forms. Tests are on-going in controlled corrosion chambers to qualify and quantify the impact of rock and minerals particles on steel corrosion. As more data become available these relationships can lead to useful information on the choice of support systems and reliable estimates of their longevity.

I. INTRODUCTION. IN the summer of 1908, R. B. Cochran, Superintendent of the Compania Metalurgica Mexicana at Sierra Mojada, Mexico, presented to the Department of Geology and Mineralogy at Case School of Applied Science an interesting series of silver-, copper-, and lead-ores from the Veta Rica mine. These ores contained several interesting minerals which were associated in a somewhat peculiar manner, so that I was impelled to make a closer study of their occurrence. The investigation has brought out several new facts concerning the geology of the district and the geological occurrence of the ores, and therefore has seemed worthy of record. Two papers have been published previously about the region, one by Chism1 in 1887, and the other by Malcolmson2 in 1902. These articles, however, treat of the district more from the stand-point of the metallurgist and mining engineer, and not much attention is devoted to its mineralogy and economic geology. II. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION OF THE DISTRICT. The Sierra Mojada is situated in the extreme western part of the State of Coahuila, near the Chihuahua boundary. It is reached best via the Mexican Central railroad from El Paso, Tex., to Escalon, Chihuahua, a distance of 494 miles. From this point, a branch line, the Mexican Northern railroad, runs 78 miles in a NE. direction to the mines, which are its northern terminus. Coal is a valuable energy source in New Zealand and has been mined from the West Coast for over 100 years. Stockton Mine is New Zealand's largest opencast coal producer supplying around 1.5 Mt of hard coking and thermal coal to international markets annually. The Stockton Plateau forms an extensive, gently inclined dip slope on erosion resistant Lower Eocene Brunner Coal Measures unconformably overlying basement rocks. The dip slope rises 600 - 1000 masl, locally dissected by fault scarps and present-day fluvial systems, some of which are deeply incised. Within the Mt Augustus Mining Block overburden comprises of a 30 - 40 m thick sequence of fluviatile, coarse to granular coal measure sandstones. High quality coking coal is preserved as a gently dipping, 10 - 12 m thick seam. High and sometimes very steep cliffs of jointed overburden shape the skyline escarpment, above steep forested slopes and gullies. As mining has progressed at Mt Augustus individual coal blocks are progressively becoming more technically challenging. This paper outlines the scientific approach taken by Solid Energy International and mining contractors to carefully unlock many thousands of tons of coal whilst protecting nearby flora and fauna from the impacts of dislodged rock and other blasting side-effects. The strategy involved: an expert-driven onsite risk assessment,formulation of a management plan to manage impacts,conducting an in situ vibration research program, andanalysis of results and operational designs to eliminate potential environmental problems.

Soil and vegetation development were studied on abandoned mine sites near Velva in Ward County, North Dakota. The sites studied were 1, 7, 17, 30 and 45 years old since abandonment; unmined sites were also studied to provide measures of comparison. Species diversity was the highest at unmined sites (114) and lowest at the I year old site (26); sites 7, 17,30 and 45 years old had 37, 52, 43 and 68 species, respectively. Stand ordination revealed that site ages were the most important in influencing species diversity and composition. Stand-environ-mental complex ordinations encompassing 53 variables showed topographic variables to be the most important followed by site ages. Rates of nutrient accumulations were as follows: organic carbon 13.1 g m-2 yr-1; nitrogen 2.5 g m-2 yr-1; phosphorus 0.01 g m-2 yr-1; potassium 0.49 g m-2 yr-1. Carbon-nitrogen ratios showed the widest range for 1 year old sites (5-40) but 70 percent of the 45 year old sites showed values below 15 which were com-parable to the unmined mixed grass prairie sites. Species distributional diagrams are provided to show their habitat preferences which may be helpful in formulating species prescriptions for revegetation.

Indonesia is a fast growing democratic developing country comprising more than 17,000 islands, founding member of ASEAN and a member of the G-20 major economies. It is one of the most highly mineralised countries in the world, the mining sector playing a pivotal role in the country's economy. In 2001, the Decentralization Law No. 22/1999 came into force and caused a transfer of authority and responsibility from central to regional and local administrative governments. The new Mining Law of 2009 substituted its 40 year old predecessor, but lacked detailed regulations for its implementation. These were only issued in 2010, which lead to a period of great uncertainty for investors in the mining industry. The new legislation intends to foster domestic economic development, which may be interpreted as protectionist policy. For the development of a sustainable mineral resources policy, further endeavours will have to be made.

This paper will discuss one of the largest construction projects the City of Portland has undertaken. This phase of the Willamette River Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO)project consists of approximately 18,500 ft of tunnel in soft ground, requiring the construction of six deep shafts and jet grout ground improvement. The purpose of the project is to reduce volume of combined sewerage overflows from the drainage areas on the west side of the Willamette River. Bencor-Petrifond-Pacchiosi Joint Venture was awarded a contract to design and construct six deep circular shafts, jet grout ground improvement for three bridges and jet grout ground improvement break-in/outs for some shafts. Of the six shafts the Pumping Station Shaft was the deepest and largest, requiring a permanent ground support system with a deep jet grout ground water cut-off to 335-ft deep. The joint venture used state of the art methods and equipment to achieve its objectives and build the structures through some very difficult alluvial soils to great depths next to the Willamette River. The paper will provide a general discussion of the shaft construction and jet grout ground improvement installed for this phase of the project. It will also discuss some of the technical challenges encountered while effectively managing risk and costs, resulting in a successful project completed in a timely manner.
