The authors discuss the application of drum and friction hoists under modern conditions and give four examples of friction hoists proposed for various applications. The paper concludes with a summary of the advantages and limitations of friction hoists relative to drum hoists. Introduction T H~ introduction of the multiple-rope friction hoist m the late 1940's has complicated the se-lection of the right hoist for a given job. Once such considerations as rope safety factor, drum to rope ratio, hoisting distance, tons per hour and/or service duty have been decided upon, the selection of a drum hoist is relatively simple. We now ask our-selves "which hoist -drum or friction? (See Figure 1 and Figure 2). When a friction hoist is a possibility we are immediately concerned with how many ropes to use, whether to hoist balanced or counter-balanced, whether a friction hoist will be flexible enough for the application and, of course, what the relative costs will be.

Introduction A comprehensive study of the economics of processes for smelting iron ores has been made by the Ontario Research Foundation on behalf of the Ontario Research Commission. This survey has included investigations of all processes in commercial use, and proposed processes which are still in the experimental stage. The two main objects of this work were to discover (l) whether any known processes would be particularly suited to present and future Canadian conditions, and (2) whether any new process would be of assistance in solving the present scrap shortage in Canada. The future prospects of the Canadian iron smelting industry have changed radically in the past ten years. For nearly twenty years before 1939 no iron ore was mined in Canada. The ore used was imported, mainly from the United States and Newfoundland. The economics of iron blast-furnace smelting always force the location of blast furnaces near the source of coal for making high-grade metallurgical coke, and near the market for iron and steel, rather than near the iron ore. Blast-furnace installations in Canada are confined to the north shores of the Great Lakes with ready access to United States coal and ore and the major Canadian markets, and to Nova Scotia near the coalfields of that Province. This distribution of primary smelting capacity naturally results in relatively high prices for iron and steel in the West, the North, and in Quebec.

The Bureau of Mines is using model ducts lined with coal to study the nature of coal mine fires, their rate of propagation, their influence on ventilation airflows, and their response to sealing and other fire suppression measures. For scale-modeling purposes these studies are being carried out in various size ducts; eventually they will include a full-size mine entry in the Bruceton multiple-entry Experimental Mine. To date, work has been carried out in an insulated 9.l-m-long duct with a 5-cm thickness of coal leaving a 23-by 23-cm square opening for air ventilation. Fire propagation processes in this duct were mainly transient in nature owing to the relatively small length-to-diameter ratio. This report describes the experimental equipment employed and the results obtained to date.

Epithermal gold is hosted by late Middle Miocene Okiduse Volcanics on Woodlark Island. Dating of associated alteration minerals indicate mineralisation to be broadly contemporaneous with volcanism (12.2 - 12.5 m.y.) and is probably related to subduction of the Solomon Sea plate along the Trobriand Trench. Mineralisation is polymetallic and structurally controlled. Pyrite, sphalerite, galena and minor chalcopyrite occur in steeply dipping fracture zones and/or hydrothermal breccia bodies associated with mixed clay-pyrite alteration envelopes. These envelopes occur within a terrane of regionally propylitised high-K, calc-alkaline andesites and related epizonal subvolcanics. Gangue minerals include quartz, calcite, dolomite and minor anhydrite. High level advanced argillic alteration and siliceous cap rocks are not present but may have been eroded off the top of the system. Fluid inclusion and stable isotope data suggest that the carbonates and paragenetically associated auriferous base metal sulphides probably deposited from an isotopically evolved (+8%. 180) reduced hydrothermal fluid sourced from underlying sedimentary rocks. The fluid was predominantly of low salinity (0-4 wt % NaCl equivalent) and had a temperature of about 270¦C at the time of boiling and mineral deposition.

The Bureau of Mines made time-dependent calculations to determine the size of a stationary source fire within a ventilated duct (or passage-way) necessary to ignite a combustible duct liner. The objective of this work was to gain more understanding of what occurs in duct fires and to determine critical conditions for ignition and propagation of mine fires. Heat transfer to the combustible surface includes both convective and radiated components, while the heat is conducted into the combustible and reradiated to the surroundings. The combustible is assumed to ignite when the net heat transfer to its surface is sufficient to raise the surface temperature to some minimum temperature, defined as the ignition temperature. A nondimensional parameter, which characterizes the source-fire intensity in the presence of ventilation flow, emerges as a parameter for a criterion of the critical conditions. The results of these calculations indicated that the minimum fire size necessary for ignition increases with the ventilation rate and duct cross section. These results are compared with experimental results obtained from fires in a 0.8-by 0.8-by Il-m-long duct and a full-scale gallery (2.4-by 2.4-by 65-m). Agreement between the theory and the experiment is good.

This report covers the calendar year 1953 and has been prepared and submitted in accordance with the provisions of Sec. 106(a) and Sec. 212(c) of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act (66 Stat. 692; 30 U.S.C. Secs. 451-483). During this first full calendar year of operations under the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act, the coal-mining industry of the United States attained the best injury records in its history - improving the former best records (made in 1952) by 91 fatal and 10,020 nonfatal injuries. Whereas, the mandatory provisions of the act were intended and designed to prevent major mine disasters, apparently the effects have reached beyond the scope thereof in reducing mine accidents generally.

The Pennsylvania anthracite-mining region is the only one in the world of major magnitude. As the deposits of anthracite in the United States are limited virt113.lly to Pennsylvania, the difficulties of this industry have been commonly considered a State rather than a national problem. However, there is also national interest in the conservation and wise utilization of all fuel resources and in the control of interstate waterways. The anthracite industry is confronted with the very se:;-ious :problem of accumu.lation of water in many of the mines. This problem must be solved soon if progressively higr-er mi~ing costs are to be avoided. The water proble~ cannot be solved by the operating compa,nies without State or Federal aid, or both, owing to the magnitude of the work requir~d, diversity of interests of the coal ana surfa.ce ovmerships, hazard to the whole mining community, and interests affec~ed outside the mining region. The cost of abati~ the ever-increasing_surface seepage to mine workings and of handling this seepage once it }3s occurred is beyond the economic resources of most ope~ating ma.'18.gements. The data in this paper giving the high lights of the water problem and indicating what appears to be a step in the right direction are based upon observations made during the past year that the industry desires and believes it is to the npublic interesttr to keep mine workings free of flood end surface waters.

In the field of mineral processing, although many operations are applied to suspensions of ore particles in fluids, there is a lack of fundamental knowledge relative to the flow resistance encountered by immersed bodies moving through solid-liquid suspensions. Previously proposed equations, based on the Ostwald-de Waele (power-law) model for non-Newtonian fluids, are exam ined in the turbulent flow region relative to a number of pertinent variables and their effects on the movement of immersed bodies. As more knowledge is acquired in regard to the effects of suspension variables on the rheological properties, useful relationships may be proposed to allow predictions of conditions to achieve optimum results for engineering purposes. In the field of minerals processing, many operations are applied to suspensions of ore particles in fluids. The differential movement of solids of various sizes and densities in suspensions is of utmost importance to gravity concentration, wet classification, flotation, hydrometallurgy, and pipeline transport of solids. The subject is also of importance to other branches of engineering; for example, those involved with soil mechanics, ceramic slips, and oil-well drilling fluids. There is a lack of fundamental knowledge relative to the flow resistance encountered by immersed bodies moving through solid-liquid suspensions. The problems encountered in the direct application of the well-known Stokes and Newton's Laws to non-Newtonian systems have been examined in a previous paper.' Equations were proposed based on the Ostwald-de Waele (power-law) model for non-Newtonian fluids. This present paper examines these equations in the turbulent flow region relative to a number of pertinent variables and their effects on the movement of immersed bodies. It is thought that, as more knowledge is acquired as to the effects of suspension variables on the rheological properties, useful relationships may be proposed to allow prediction of conditions to achieve optimum results for engineering purposes. The purpose of this paper is to make an initial assessment of the nature and magnitude of pertinent suspension variables. In order to avoid too voluminous a document, the examination of kinetics and mechanisms will be omitted at this time. THEORY A Newtonian fluid is defined as a fluid in which the stress is proportional to the rate of strain, 2 i.e.: H = viscosity; see Table I. for list of symbols The following equations are conventionally used to assess the motion of spherical particles moving under laminar and turbulent flow conditions through Newtonian fluids: When these relationships are applied in practice to suspensions, the liquid density is substituted by a composite suspension density, and viscosity is usually taken as that of the suspending liquid or an approximated "apparent viscosity." However, suspensions are non-Newtonian in character3 and thus, more than one viscosity parameter is required to describe their behavior. "We made site visits to determine potential environmental issues caused by artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in the Tarkwa Mining Area (TMA) of Ghana. Activities of the diggers were observed to degrade vegetation, land and water. Improper handling of mercury was also identified as a major threat to people and ecosystem. Large abandoned pits and trenches posed fall traps to farmers, hunters and wildlife. We argue that lack of adequate monitoring and regulatory enforcement by Ghanaian authorities, together with inappropriate mining processes, probably due to lack of technical expertise are contributing factors to the environmental issues of artisanal and small-scale mining in the TMA. INTRODUCTION Environmental degradation caused by artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) has been a major concern to many people and governments around the world. ASM is often associated with health, safety and environmental issues in communities where it is practiced (Kitula, 2006; Asiedu, 2013; Sousa et al., 2010). Some of the environmental issues that have been reported include land degradation, mercury contamination, cyanide release, and pollution of rivers/streams. These issues have been attributed to improper mining methods, inefficient technology, lack of technical training and environmental awareness, and lack of regulatory enforcement (Serfor-Armah et al., 2005; Bansah et al., 2016a; Hentschel et al., 2002). In Ghana, ASM typically occurs in rural communities, providing jobs to many people and contributing towards socioeconomic growth of the country (Banchirigah & Hilson, 2010; Bansah et al., 2016b; Osei-Kojo & Andrews, 2016). As a result of the environmental issues, many people have called on government to develop drastic measures to control ASM operations. It is in this regard that this paper examines potential environmental issues caused by ASM in the Tarkwa Mining Area in Ghana, and suggests mitigation measures to ensure environmental sustainability. ASM in the area comprises of registered (licensed) and unregistered (unlicensed) operations that adopt surface or underground mining methods to exploit gold-bearing materials. Surface operations typically involve clearing of vegetation, removal of overburden, excavation of mineral deposit, washing/grinding of excavated gravels and processing with mercury. Except grinding, washing and mercury recovery, underground operations are conducted below ground with limited impact on the surface. Alluvial mining is also commonly practiced in streams and along river banks. These activities can have devastating impact on biodiversity of the ecosystem. To achieve the objective for this study, field visits were made to ASM sites to observe operations and interact with diggers. Visits were also made to host communities of ASM and government officials to obtain their perspectives on ASM in relation to environmental impact. The study area (Tarkwa Mining Area) is located in the Western Region of Ghana (see Figure 1). It is endowed with natural resources such as gold and manganese. Hence, mining is the major economic activity in the area. ASM is widespread, with 15 registered operations and several unregistered mines. The environmental issues observed in the study have been grouped into three main categories: vegetation and land depletion; water quality and pollution issues; and mercury contamination issues."

The Bureau of Mines is establishing design criteria for effective roof support systems and is developing technology to improve mine planning and design. Geologic studies, surface and underground mine monitoring, and laboratory evaluations were conducted. The seven papers in this proceedings Information Circular present results of several investigations. Addressed are problems existing in both longwall and multiple-seam mines. Discussions include the effect of dewatering at a longwall mine site in the Pittsburgh coal seam and the effect of chain pillars on subsidence. Other results are measurement and characterization of longwall rock mass movement and an integrated design for stability in multiple-seam mining.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines contracted a study to estimate what effects the underground mining of thick coal seams in the western United Slates would have on the surrounding water resources. Potential coal fields in the western United States where this type of mining might occur were identified. The foreign literature was searched for studies of effects on hydrology from thick seam underground coal mining. Based on the limited information obtained from the foreign literature, estimates of the effects of this type of mining on the ground and surface water in the western states were made.

Eleven major pyrometallurgical processes and operations suggested for recovering manganese from domestic resources are described. These include seven pyrometallurgical processes that usually yield a ferroalloy or a product from which ferromanganese can be produced in one operation. The remaining four involve pyrometallurgical operations whose products require either an additional two-stage process to produce ferromanganese or chemical processing to recover a high-quality manganese oxide product.

Seabed polymetallic nodules, which contain significant quantities of metals key to electrification (nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese) can be processed using several different metallurgical processing options, including direct smelting and subsequent hydrometallurgical refining of the copper/nickel matte, ammoniacal leaching (gas reduction or Cuprion), and acid leaching (often reductive). Many of these approaches suffer from reduced cobalt extraction, difficult physical performance, or overall circuit complexity in general, leading to increased risk to the overall project. SGS has considered pressure acid leaching of nodules for further investigation, as publicly shared data on this processing route stems from the 1970s and 1980s and is not always easily accessible. This paper will detail the series of tests conducted and provide updated results obtained (high Ni/Co/Cu recovery with limited Mn/Fe), as well as comment on the potential treatment options on the product solution and residue.

TO my mind the National Bituminous Coal Act so far has proved one of the unhappiest experiences that has ever befallen the bituminous coal operators of the United States. Viewed in the light of its ugly consequences everyone should recognize this measure for what it is -a weird thing as unreal as a page from "Alice in Wonderland." Indeed it might be another stanza to the tale of the Walrus and the Carpenter, with the coal operators in the role of the unfortunate oysters who were taken on that memorable ramble. It is time that coal producers open their eyes, jerk themselves out of any lingering hypnotic optimism about the price-fixing provisions of this law, demand the repeal of these corroding clauses, and then set about remedying as best they can the disastrous effects of this retromingent scheme to regulate the coal business.

When mechanical ventilation is to supersede the natural ventilation of a mine it is desirable to determine what resistance the mine as a whole offers to the flow of air in order to specify properly the limiting duties of a ventilating fan. The relation of pressure to volume of flow for the mine as a whole may be calculated from experimental data, or it may be determined directly by measurements of volume of flow and the natural draft pressures causing flow; but in both methods the determinations are affected by many variables. With the intention of making a practical application of both methods, a small metal mine in process of development at Butte, Mont., was selected by the writers as the object of experiments planned to compare the mine resistances determined by measurements of natural draft and volume of flow with those calculated from experimental data. Four sets of teats were made with natural draft in October, 1925, December, 1925, April, .1926, and September to December, 1926; the last set consisted of a series of weekly observations. DESCRIPTION OF MINE The mine selected for the experiments was a typical vertical shaft metal mine in the development stage. No stoping had been done, and ventilation was confined to shafts, crosscuts, drifts, and raises. Figure 1 is a dia¬grammatic sketch of the main openings. All were timbered with full sets on approximately 5-foot centers. The shaft compartments were 4 by 4.5 feet, and one in each shaft was partly blocked by staggered manway landings. A pump column in the upcast shaft was discharging about 280 gallons a minute of water at 70° F. from the 1,000-foot level. The drifts were slightly sinuous, but the crosscuts were exceptionally straight and uniform in area; both drifts and crosscuts were about 5 by 7 feet in cross section. The raises were composed of vertical sections joined by frequent 450 offsets; each had three 4.5 by 4.5-foot compartments, of which two were plank-lined ore chutes and one was partly

"IntroductionThis paper on the kata thermometer is issued by the Bureau of Mines on account of the general interest in this instrument and the fact that it is frequently used in studies of mine ventilation conditions with regard to comfort and health of miners. It has been used in the studies being conducted along this line by the Bureau of Mines on the effects of high temperatures and humidities of air in mine working on the comfort conditions, as well as in studies of atmospheric conditions in mine, railway and vehicular tunnels.The study of the various physiological responses of the human body to different degrees of temperature combined with different percentages of relative humility in still and in moving air, now being conducted at the Pittsburgh experiment station of the bureau in the research laboratory of the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, cooperating with the Bureau of and the U. S. Public Health Service, presents an added opportunity of investigating the instruments that have been devised to measure atmospheric conditions as they affect the comfort and health of human beings.The ordinary mercury thermometer, as pointed out by Heberden3 almost hundred years ago is a very inadequate instrument for measuring the physiological effects of atmospheric conditions. It merely accounts for that part of the body heat lost by raliation and convection, while as a matter of fact greater part of the body heat resulting from the metabolic process within the body is eliminated by means of evaporation from the surface of the body."

This report on the mining and milling of tungsten ores is the second part of a general study of the domestic tungsten industry. The first part, comprising general information on tungsten, has been printed as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6821. The purpose of these papers is to increase efficiency in the mining, preparation, and utilization of the tungsten resources of the United States. The tungsten industry forms so small a part of the vast mining and metallurgical operations of the illation that private metallurgists have not had enough inducement to give special attention to the recovery of tungsten minerals from the ores, and many of the small companies are financially unable to undertake research work. A study of the milling of tungsten ores reveals that further improvement is possible, especially in the treatment of slimes. Recent experimental work by the Bureau shows that the flotation process is applicable to certain tungsten ores. The future of the tungsten industry it the United States depends to a great extent on utilization of the low-grade deposits of the contact-metamorphic type.

Hydro-Jex® is a new enhanced method for heap leach treatment with significantly higher mineral recovery. In this case study at the Los Filos Mine in Mexico, the Hydro-Jex operation is evaluated for heap leach stability. This is pursued by numerical modeling of the heap leach pad stability and well monitoring of the phreatic surface before and after the Hydro-Jex operation. Experimental and numerical results both indicate an improvement in mineral processing under the influence of Hydro-Jex. Numerical results show an insignificant decrease and a significant increase in stability during and after Hydro-Jex injection application, respectively. The integrity of the liner is maintained in both cases. The zonal injection pressure, operationally below the overburden pressure, is found to be negligible compared with the dimensionality of the heap, and stability of the structure is not exposed to any significant risk, even up to 25%above overburden pressure. Furthermore, heap leach factor of safety increases after Hydro-Jex application. This is attributed to breakdown of the water solution build-up and thus a decrease in the phreatic surface depth below the top of the pad. It is suggested that injection wells be drilled, based on thorough geophysical data, in locations where overcompaction of heap material results in water solution build-up and pore pressure enhancement. Compared with traditional heap leaching, the Hydro-Jex technique not only expedites mineral processing by increasing chemical kinetics extraction but also increases the stability of the heap by unclogging drains.

O valor do PREN da liga pode levar a uma previsão equivocada da resistência à corrosão por pite pois, caso haja um desbalanceamento das frações volumétricas da ferrita d e da austenita, as composições químicas das fases poderão ser muito diferentes daquela da liga. Neste caso o PREN de uma das fases pode ficar abaixo do PREN da liga. Caracterizou-se três chapas de aços inoxidáveis duplex laminados com diferentes PRENs: UNS S32304 (Lean Duplex), UNS S31803 (Duplex) e UNS S32750 (Super Duplex). Várias técnicas complementares de análise microestrutural foram utilizadas, tais como de espectrometria de emissão ótica, microscopia óptica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura com EDS acoplado. Realizaram-se análises metalográficas quantitativas para a determinação das frações volumétricas de ferrita d e da austenita e análises químicas semi-quantitativas das fases presentes utilizando-se um MEV com EDS acoplado.

The 1952 Annual Report of the West Virginia Department of Mines lists seven beds that are being mined in Mingo County, of which the Cedar Grove is the most important. The Cedar Grove, Alma, and Coalburg contain the largest remaining known reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 3,007 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 2,396 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.
