This Federal Bureau of Mines publication is a statistical analysis of all surface and underground coal mine fires reported in the United States from 1950 to 1977. Accounts of selected nonreportable fires and opinion data gathered via interviews with mine safety directors were separately analyzed. Both reported and nonreportable fires were analyzed by time trends, State, ignition source, burning substance, location in mine, equipment, detection, duration, injuries, fatalities, and successful extinguishing agents. It was found that the majority of all mine fires were electrical in origin. The equipment most frequently involved in underground fires was conveyor belts, and in surface fires, it was crushers and/or breakers. Underground fires occurred most often near the working face. Water and hand-portable extinguishers were the most common methods of extinguishment.

1, Introduction Location Kalengwa mine is located in the North Western Province of Zambia, 402 kilometre by unpaved road to the west of Kitwe, which is roughly in the centre of the Zambian Copperbelt, well known as one of the world's centres of copper mining. Its position is illustrated on the map of Africa in Figure 1 and on the map of Zambia in Figure 2. It is a mine of Roan Consolidated Mines Limited whose other properties, Mufulira, Luanshya, Chambishi and Chibuluma Mines, are all located on the Copperbelt. It is managed by the Chibuluma Division of the company. The rate of production from Kalengwa will vary from 12 000 to 17 000 tonnes of saleable copper a year over the next six years. Kalengwa did not exist as a place until the first prospecting parties and later the mine became established and the early working population was recruited entirely from small villages in the surrounding area as much as thirty miles away. The mining area consists of fourteen mining locations amounting to 3.35 square kilometres and the land may be used for any purpose connected with mining, including housing, wood cutting and other utilities. The whole area is, except for minor undulations, a fairly flat plateau with main rivers running from north to south and flood basins known as "dambos" located in a general east west direction. Vegetation is, with the exception of the grassy dambos, temperate forest with relatively light undergrowth. Game of great variety is prolific, as is the associated tsetse fly.

"Introduction Byron Creek Collieries Limited Corbin mine is located in southeastern British Columbia approximately 180 air kilometres southwest of Calgary (Fig. I), twenty four kilometres south of Highway No. 3 via a newly constructed provincial road (Fig. 2). The development of the area began July 30, 1905, when D.C. Corbin, a prominent businessman from the northwestern U.S., and his associate E.J. Roberts first visited the site of Coal Mountain on horseback. Coal was in great demand by railways and other industrial users, so the Corbin Coal and Coke Co., after acquiring 6,000 hectares of land in the area, began to develop a mine. Mr. Roberts was responsible for the construction of the 22-kilometre rail spur, the Eastern British Columbia Railway, which joined the mine to the CPR main line at the McGillivray Loop. Rail access to the mine and its developing community, Corbin, B.C., was completed in September 1908, the same year that the first underground mine began production. The Corbin Coal and Coke Co. operated six mines on Coal Mountain (Fig. 3) and production from 1908 to 1930 inclusive totalled 2,120,800 tonnes. The spillage that accumulates under conveyor belt lines presents a possible fire and explosion hazard fomiinqjetsoruiel, especially to those who must clean up the spillage. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to reduce this hazard by identifying and investigating the parameters affecting the efficiency of conveyor belt cleaning. The amount of material carried back under the conveyor and the wear rates of metal cleaning blades decreased with increasing blade-to-belt pressure to a limiting value, after which the carryback and wear rates remained essentially constant. The optimum blade-to-belt pressure was found to be 11 to 14 psi for the research conveyor system. Greater pressures increased the blade-belt friction without improving either cleaning or blade life. The modes of blade wear were three-body abrasion and slurry erosion caused by the sand-lime test mixture. Wear rates were reduced by increasing the metal hardness, opti-mizing the pressure, and removing conveyor belt imperfections. Corrosion was not observed to affect the wear of various steels in tests of less than 34 h. The results of this study should allow mine operators to run their conveyors under conditions that will maximize cleaning and minimize equipment wear.

A calculation programme of finite element method has been developed in order to study the behavior of excavation with sheet piling in soft clay. Based on a series of isotropically consolidated-undrained tests (CIU) on Hangzhou clay a linear relationship between the normalized initial tangent modulus number, E1, and stress-path parameter, a, is found for four different stress paths, and stress-path dependent modulus equations derived. Meanwhile, several influence factors, such as embedment depth and stiffness of the wall and soil conditions, were taken into consideration in the programme. Some valuable conclusions were obtained. Finally, a case history was studied by the proposed method of calculation. The result of calculation and the field observation are in good agreement.

Development of a permanent human base on the Moon for exploration requires a self sustaining system. This entails production and processing of limited amounts of raw material on the Moon. Any mining and construction activities on the Moon can only be performed by a robust excavation machine that can excavate a variety of material from loose surface regolith to consolidated (frozen) regolith with embedded rocks in the mixture. Meanwhile, limited amount of information on lunar regolith is available to develop and optimize a machine for given lunar ground conditions. Therefore, any excavator designed for use on the lunar surface should have the ability to adapt to a wide range of operating conditions. A prototype cutterhead for the lunar excavator was built and tested at the Kennametal facility in Latrobe PA A. This paper discusses the results of initial material characterization as well as full scale tests of a prototype cutterhead inrelevent material. A brief review of anticipated production rates under various assumed ground conditions will also be presented.

The main disturbance for stability in primary grinding using SAG mills is related to continuous changes in the ore being fed to the plant, such as size and hardness. Searching for stability is the first step to accomplish, before trying to maximize the mill throughput. The time variability in the characteristics of the ore being fed from the mine to the plant must be known or inferred to perform adaptive changes in the grinding process control. In day to day operation, such information is not available in real time. Transport times and inventories between the mine and the plant complicate the situation. Under this scenario, Minera Los Pelambres implemented a grinding optimization strategy, based on the real time analysis of certain process variables, such as ore size, mill current consumption, pebble generation and throughput. As a result, both grindability and stability indexes are inferred. This is equivalent to inferring the ore characteristics by knowing its effect on the grinding behavior. These two indexes permit control of the SAG mill total charge level and hence, allow optimization of throughput by means of an expert control system.

[In the examination of bentonitic clay suspensions used for oil-well drilling fluids3/ (and for other purposes, such as a core binder for foundry sand) it is important to have comparative tests for evaluating them. A satisfactory clay for these and other purposes should have the property of forming what is commonly called a "gel," but the measurement of this property has been a real problem. To date the solution has not been satisfactory, and some of the difficulties are considered in, this, paper, which describes a simple form of instrument (identified as an eykometer) for measuring the yield point under hydrostatic conditions of non-Newtonian clay suspensions, including those muds that are thixotropic. An oil-well drilling mud serves several functions, many of which depend on the "gel" characteristics of the mud. Among the more important functions are: (a) To plaster the sides of the hole to prevent caving of the walls; (b) to prevent the loss of the circulating fluid out of the hole by seepage; (c) to carry sand and cuttings out of the hole to the surface as they are formed by the rotary drill; and (d) when circulation of the fluid stops for shut-down or other unavoidable cause, to hold the cuttings in suspension by the setting up of the gel, thereby avoiding the difficulties that result when these cuttings are allowed to fall through the fluid and pack at the bottom of the hole.]

The Iron Mountain tungsten deposits first were visited by a field party of the Federal Geological Survey in May 1942 while beryllium deposits in that district' were being examined . Later they were examined by F. A. Rutledge , an engineer of the Bureau of Mines , and an exploration project was recommended , work upon which began in March 1943 and was terminated in April 1943 after intensive trenching and sampling had been completed .

Estimation of the axial side shear resistance of drilled shaft rock sockets is directly related to the unconfined compressive strength of the bedrock. Commonly, the mean unconfined compressive strength value is calculated from a range of laboratory test results and is used to estimate the side shear of the bedrock. This paper presents the results from a full scale axial load test performed on an 8.5-feet-diameter drilled shaft rock socket, and compares measured side shear values to estimated values for two different rock strata. Measured side shear values correlated well with the design value calculated for the "strong" rock stratum, but did not correlate well with the design value calculated for the "weak" rock stratum. The mean unconfined compressive strength was used to calculate the side shear in both strata, but review of the laboratory data indicates that this value may not have been appropriate for the weak stratum due to a large variation in the laboratory test results. Also included in this paper is a discussion of the subsurface conditions, the laboratory test results, and the methodology used to design the drilled shaft rock sockets for axial and lateral resistance.

This paper describes the preliminary design of the fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnels along State Route 24 in Oakland, California. The paper focus is on two major aspects of the project: initial support system design and seismic design. The initial support system was designed based on the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM).NATM provides the required flexibility to accommodate the variable ground conditions in the weak, folded, and faulted rock along the alignment. The seismic design provides a final lining system that meets serviceability requirements for a 1,500 year seismic event with an estimated peak ground acceleration of 1.2g.

The successful development of industrial minerals projects requires an integrated, holistic understanding of the metallurgical and product performance test work in the context of the geological setting of the deposit and applied to mining, processing and marketing of saleable products. The product specifications provide the essential starting point for geometallurgical studies. A sound understanding of the desired product is needed to design and interpret a program of test work. Examples are provided from recent studies on bentonite and graphite deposits.For bentonite projects, the naïve testing of only the cation exchange capacity (CEC) as a measure of purity can lead to unexpected outcomes when the deposit is mined. The CEC attribute may remain the same, while other important properties such as pH and swelling index change markedly with depth, due to weathering and oxidation, leading to disappointing production outcomes.For graphite projects it is not enough to report only total graphitic carbon content (TGC). Knowledge is required of the in situ flake size and textures in addition to purity and flake size distribution of extracted graphite, which may all vary from one domain to another across the deposit. Such geometallurgical attributes of the ore will impact on the ‘basket price’ used to estimate the value of marketable parcels of expected product.Disclosure of such information must be considered part of fully informing the market. As with all new project developments, consideration of the JORC (2012) and VALMIN (2015) Codes requires disclosure of all material information. This includes the geometallurgical characterisation, ie those aspects of the mineralogy that impact on resource evaluation, ore reserve definition and project valuation.CITATION:Shaw, W J and Scogings, A J, 2017. This report summarizes the results of an investigation of geologic factors that contribute to roof quality in underground mines in the Pocahontas #3 coal bed in southern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia. The investigation consisted of three phases, the first of which was selecting for detailed study five mines which represented the range of roof conditions, mining practices and geologic phenomena. This was accomplished by a statistical analysis of questionnaire data from 35 mines. The second phase consisted of detailed mapping in a "good" and a "bad" top area in each of the five selected mines and resulted in a qualitative assessment of geologic factors contributing to roof £alls. In the third phase, five mines were selected in which most non-geologic factors believed to contribute to roof falls were relatively constant but displayed a wide variety of geologic characteristics. Data from these mines were analyzed to test the qualitative assessments from Phase II. The primary result of this investigation is that slickensides arising from different geologic causes are the major geologic features leading to roof falls. These slicken-sides are found in ancient slump deposits, fire clays and sandy fire clays and channel contacts. Falls also occur where thick sandstone bodies directly over-lying the coal contain abundant shale or ironstone pebbles and coaly strips. The best top material is a sequence which consists of shale grading upward to sandy shale and sandstone within 30 feet of the top of the coal. Thick sand-stone units (301) without pebbles also provide good top.

THE subject of the constitution of copper-iron mattes has received considerable attention in recent years by Keller,1 Bolles,2 Hofman,3 and Gibb and Philp.4 Still more recently Friedrich, Röntgen, Wiedmann, Heyn and Bauer, and Leroux have published, in some instances, elaborate researches on the various systems of the sulphides, and the sulphides and their respective metals, which enter into the constitution of mattes, and have added very greatly to the knowledge of the subject. The work of Friedrich has been especially fruitful. But to date no effort has been made to correlate the data obtained in the latter researches and apply then to the study of the product called " matte," which is made in such large quantities by copper and lead-smelters. In this paper we propose to determine, by metallographic and chemical means, the constitution of copper-iron and copper-lead mattes in the light of the recent data above mentioned. We do not discuss copper-nickel mattes or speisses (artificial arsenides). The paper is divided into three sections I. A review and discussion of the various binary systems of the metallic, sulphides, and the binary systems of various metals and their respective sulphides entering into the constitution of mattes; also a discussion of the physical and chemical properties of these sulphides. II. A description of the results obtained from the chemical and metallographic examinations of the samples of copper-iron and copper-lead-iron matte obtained from various plants.

KYANITE and the related minerals sillimanite, andalusite, dumortierite, and topaz are natural aluminum silicates that can be used in production of mullite (3A1203?2Si02), a superduty refractory material. Kyanite and sillimanite are the dominant ones because of their greater abundance. The only other kyanite-group mineral presently used for mullite production is andalusite. Mullite is not an absolutely essential material as other refractories can be used in the same heat range. However, it is a highly satisfactory one. It is the only compound of silica and alumina that is stable at high temperatures. It has low thermal expansion and is very resistant to corrosive melts and to thermal shock. For these reasons mullite refractories have a much longer life than standard fire-clay refractories under the same conditions. Worldwide, excluding U.S.S.R., the refractories industry consumes about 150-000 short tons annually of kyanite group minerals and synthetic mullite.

HW Process Technologies, Inc. (HWPT) has developed a patented membrane-based ion fractionation system, which specifically separates copper from gold and silver species in a cyanide matrix. This Engineered Membrane Separation (EMS?) system was pilot demonstrated on the 82,000 liters of pregnant leach solution' (PLS) generated from tailings, via thin layer leaching, at a mine site in Durango State, Mexico. The EMS? recovered ~90% of the gold-silver cyano-complex to a 90% volume permeate (based upon an EMS? feed stream of 100% volume) while rejecting -90% of the copper cyano-complex to a \0% (by volume) concentrate. The EMS? technology combines pore-size specific electro-statically charged membranes with engineered materials of construction and application-specific operational design that reject multi-valent, ionically charged species to the concentrate and transmit mono-valent species through the membrane to the permeate. The 850 ppm Cu PLS contained approximately 0.8 gil free NaCN with, the copper cyano-omplex principally in the CU(CN)3 and CU(CN)4 forms. The gold grade of the PLS was -2 ppm Au. The ~LS calcium concentration at -700 ppm Ca was reduced to ISO ppm.Ca (± 50 ppm) by sodium cycle ion exchange pre-treatrnent prior to EMS? processing.
