An OCS Expert control system was implemented by Svedala Cisa at the Minera Maricunga Refugio Crush-Leach Operation near Copiapo, Chile. The purpose of the Expert system was to maximize production through the primary and secondary crushing circuits and help balance crusher usage between each stage to maximize total plant production. Interesting aspects of the control strategies are discussed. Benefits of the control were verified through a randomized On/Off test program. Tonnage increases ranged from 5% to approximately 20% at good confidence intervals. Benefits analysis results are discussed. The crushing plant at Refugio is very remote and is located at approximately 15,500 ft. This poses many challenges. The effect of altitude and remote location on plant operation are discussed.

The Citronen Zinc-Lead Project is one of the world?s largest undeveloped zinc-lead resources, containing more than 13 billion pounds of zinc and lead metal. The project is located in northern Greenland, a self-governed region of the Kingdom of Denmark (Figure 1). Citronen is the northern-most mine in the world, operating at a latitude of 83o 3? N. In excess of 67,000 meters of diamond drilling have been completed to delineate the resource. As of January 2012, the measured, indicated, and inferred reserves for the Citronen project totaled 70.8 million tonnes, consisting of 5.7% zinc + lead (3.5% zinc cut-off) (Ironbark, 2012). For the underground mine plan, room-and-pillar and long holestoping mining methods were selected. The beneficial application of structural fill was considered for increased recovery, efficient tailings disposal, and ground control. Three types of fill were compared - paste fill, cemented rock fill, and iced tailings. An environmental and economic feasibility study concluded that iced tailings was the preferred alternative provided it met the ground control requirements. A comprehensive, harmonic and sustainable development has always been a real concern of state policy makers. To reach such development, regional planning is an approach which is widely applied. This paper deals with policies adopted by a given country with rich mineral deposits, in order to accomplish a mining growth as well as economic development in relatively poor regions. In this regards, first, some worldwide experiences belonging to China, with large scale mining operations and Nigeria with a small scale mining industry, are studied. The mining industry in Iran is then considered as a case study. The study continues by categorizing and prioritizing Iranian regions based on their mining potential and the degree of development, using statistical analysis and Taxonomy and AHP techniques. Results obtained serve to provide recommendations as to where capital investments in the mining industry would produce highest returns. The approach used, together with the practical policies suggested in this paper, can be used to adapt appropriate strategies for mining development in a way that contributes to regional development and a more effective income distribution.

The finely dispersed kerogen particulates present in the dilute suspension can be coagulated with the aid of a hydrophobic organism, Mycobacterium Dhlei. The initial coagulation and aggregation are strongly dependent on pH and organism concentration, the isoelectric points of oil shale kerogen and Mycobacterium phlei are at pH 3 and 1.8 respectively. As a result the aggregation is rapid around pH 3. Preliminary results show that it is quite possible to use microorganisms for enhanced dewatering of kerogen concentrate produced by froth. flotation.

Marble deposits of dolomitic variety are available in large quantities in India and for extracting these deposits diamond wire saw cutting machine is mainly used. Cutting performance of the diamond wire saw machine depends on rock parameters, machine parameters and operational parameters. Rock parameters related to physico-mechanical properties, such as, compressive strength, tensile strength, shear strength, modulus of elasticity and abrasion resistance of marble play role in determining cutting rate and beads wear rate. Thus, this study was undertaken to determine the relationship between different physico-mechanical properties and cutting performance. This work also aimed at enhancing the cutting performance of diamond wire saw in dolomitic marble deposit. Study was conducted in the field at three different zones having deposit of soft, medium hard and hard dolomitic marble. During the study, cutting rates and wearing of diamond beads were recorded in the field. Physico-mechanical properties were determined in the laboratory. The results obtained were subsequently evaluated by using statistical analysis. Study revealed that these properties of marble play a significant role in the performance of diamond wire saw machine. Predictive equations for the wearing of diamond beads and cutting rate were developed based on regression models. Results of this study will be of ample use for operators of wire saw to achieve maximum cutting performance and for manufacturers in designing the diamond beads.

Ionic liquids (ILs) are molten salts composed of an organic cation that are liquid below 100 °C. They demonstrate unique physico-chemical properties such as good conductivity, negligible vapor pressure and non-flammability. As a consequence, they are often regarded as green solvents and could become an alternative to the use of both high-temperature molten salts and volatile organic solvents in rare-earth elements processing and recycling. The diversity of interactions existing in an ionic liquid allows the solubilization of both polar and apolar compounds. Moreover, coordinating functions on their composing ions can lead to stabilization of some species. For instance, in non-aqueous media, europium exists in the (II) oxidation state which is not stable in aqueous solutions. Understanding the mechanism of Eu(III) electrochemical reduction to Eu(II) and the stabilization of Eu(II) species in IL media could be of major interest for the development of innovative recycling processes. Using transient electrochemistry and UV-Vis spectroscopy we could get valuable information on the redox behavior of the Eu(III)/(II) couple in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([EMIm][NTf2]). Reduction of Eu(III) to Eu(II) and stability of Eu(II) was also studied thanks to a XAS-spectroelectrochemistry set up used to follow in situ the evolution of the XANES spectrum around the L3 edge of Eu during electrolysis.

"INTRODUCTION During the course of the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, examining 'engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples from seven manganese properties in Grand and beery Counties, Utah. These were supplemented by five samples submitted by property owners. Since all of the ores were too low-grade for use in producing ferromanganese for steel manufacture, some means of beneficiation was required to produce marketable concentrates, and metallurgical studies were made on each of the samples.Most of the ores Investigated are similar in one respect: At least part of the 'manganese oxide areas contains minute inclusions of gangue. This occurrence materially enhances the complexity of the ore, partly by .increasing the complexity of mineral association, but largely through making manganese-quartz liberation more difficult. In such ores, there is a marked tendency for the manganese minerals to be retained as shells or coatings on the surfaces of quartz particles when crushed. Particles of this type represent considerable loss of manganese in tailing, if gravity-concentration methods are employed, or tend to' float, thus carrying an appreciable quantity of gangue into the concentrate, if treated by flotation.Plus 48-percent manganese sinters were made from some of the ores tested, but, in general, intimate association of manganese minerals with silica limited the degree of beneficiation attainable."

A few specific examples of the application of geology and geostatistics to the mining process are given to illustrate the progress that has been made in making the Inspiration Mine more efficient and cost effective, and a statement of the philosophy of geologic applications is offered.

Diante desse cenário, a comercialização de bobinas Full Hard se tornou uma opção viável para a abertura de mercado e aumento de competitividade, frente a atual pressão imposta por produtos importados. Visitas aos potenciais clientes foram necessárias para o levantamento das características importantes a seus processos produtivos e adequação dos parâmetros utilizados no laminador reversível. Atualmente o produto está homologado e sendo fornecido a clientes externos, e espera-se o aumento da carteira, dependendo apenas da evolução do mercado.

The Tifalmin porphyry copper district is located in the Star Mountains roughly 35 km north-east of the Ok Tedi mine. The district is a cluster of temporally and geochemically related porphyry copper deposits and their associated skarns. It covers an area of roughly 10 × 6 km and comprises at least three intrusions (Olgal, Futik and Kum Kom) where drilling has demonstrated the presence of porphyry copper mineralisation, and another three intrusions (Rattatat, Unfin and Pad 48) where porphyry copper mineralisation is strongly suggested by surface investigations and geochemical or geophysical signatures.Copper and gold mineralisation was first discovered in the area in the 1960s as part of the regional exploration program by Kennecott that located Ok Tedi. The mineralisation is associated with poly-phase porphyritic diorites, quartz diorites and tonalites that intrude the Upper Eocene to Middle Miocene Darai limestone and underlying Cretaceous to Eocene Feing Group. Radiometric K-Ar and U-Pb zircon ages cluster between 4 and 2 Ma for both the mineralised and post-mineral intrusions. In addition to porphyry-type mineralisation, variable amounts of calc-silicate and/or magnetite skarn occur near the contact of most of the intrusions. Mineralisation in the Olgal and Futik porphyries occurs as chalcopyrite replacement of mafic minerals and in a stockwork of micro-veinlets. Mineralisation mostly occurs in the intrusions but is also observed in hornfelsed siltstones and sandstones of the Feing Group on the southern margin of the Olgal intrusive body. Quartz veining is uncommon. Secondary magnetite is commonly associated with the highest copper and gold grades. Sericitic alteration is most prominent in the mineralised hornfels. Structurally, the area is dominated by syn- to post-mineralisation thrusting from the north. At least one of the deposits (Olgal) appears to be truncated at depth by a thrust fault.CITATION:Queen, L D, 2015. The emphasis of this paper is on the characterization and testing of the slag produced by a secondary lead refinery. This work forms part of a broader investigation aimed at reducing loss of valuable product from the process as well as minimizing the environmental impact of the process wastes. It was this work that led to a critical examination of the standard waste classification tests. Characterization of the slag was carried out using a number of complementary techniques. In the broader context, the slag characterization aided in identifying process deficiencies and thus was a critical tool in suggesting potential for process optimization. For this study, the slag characterization provided a relatively comprehensive picture of the composition and properties of the slag, which facilitated understanding the behaviour of the slag under batch test conditions. On the basis of quantity of hazardous components alone, the slag is hazardous according to South African Acceptable Risk Limits (ARL). However, when both the quantity and the leach potential of the hazardous components is taken into account, standard waste tests carried out by three independent agencies indicate that the slag should not be classified as hazardous according to local regulations. Also, according to United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) limits, which are independent of the quantity of the waste, the slag would not be classified as hazardous. The standard waste tests used by the independent agencies was the Toxicity Characteristic Leach Procedure (TCLP), a test which was developed by the US EPA to classify hazardous wastes. One of the requirements of this batch test is that it should be quick, simple to carry out and that the results should be reproducible. Previously, the applicability of the TCLP test to mineral processing and metallurgical wastes has been challenged on a number of points. Additional testing of the slag was carried out using both the TCLP and the Synthetic Precipitation Leach Procedure (SPLP) recommended by the American National Mining Association as being more appropriate for mineral processing wastes. The particular physical and chemical characteristics of the secondary lead slag highlighted additional limitations of both the TCLP and SPLP tests as standard laboratory batch procedures. Our subject, "Safety, Legal, and Contracting," is a range of topics which covers a broad spectrum, but is obviously Intended to focus our attention upon certain particular aspects of tunnel problems. These are all fascinating and complex subjects, and others are much more qualified to discuss to discuss the fine points involved. Put after some 45 years' involvement as an inspector, engineer, contracting officer, and especially for the last 22 years as a contractor's estimator and manager, I have developed some strong and definite convictions to share with you. I hope it will serve to get you started thinking. My first tunnel experience was in a soft ground tunnel which was dug by hand, literally. The crown or arch back was taken out, a pebble at a time, by bare hand. The face was constantly breast-boarded, and the mucking was all done by hand shovel. My first rock tunnel was drilled by hand held drifters from the muck pile. Since then, most tunneling techniques have improved greatly. The jumbos, booms, muckers, and moles have taken over many of the back-breaking chores, and reduced the manpower requirements.

"Bechtel has managed a number of test programs to establish autogenous grinding circuits and size mills for a variety of ores.This paper outlines the procedures whereby bench scale and pilot plant tests are used to select the most efficient circuit to grind the range of ore types likely in the mill feed.Five examples are given. One example traces the development of a pilot plant program; it shows how bench scale Work Indices provide a target for the grinding power requirement of an ore and relates how pilot circuits are changed as a result of interpreting the results from preceding tests. The other four examples relate the interpretation of the test results to provide design data; they illustrate a number of phenomena which have been observed.INTRODUCTIONConventional crushing and grinding circuits can be specified from bench scale test data such as Bond Work Indices. Bond Indices have been correlated to a large number of rod and ball mills and by applying appropriate factors, mills can be sized from the Work Index.For autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding circuits, bench scale tests are not sufficient to be able to specify the circuit and size of the mills for a commercial plant. It is necessary to run a series of pilot plant tests to determine how the ore behaves."

Quartz veins from the Martha Hill epithermal gold-silver deposit, Waihi, commonly exhibit crustiform banded textures. Visual differences observed between bands are primarily the result of a 1 to 1500 ¦m variation in quartz grain size. Quartz band textures are dominated by anhedral interlocking quartz mosaics, commonly associated with minor adularia and sulphide phases; these textures are interpreted to be products of amorphous silica crystallisation. The occurrence of rhombic adularia suggests that prolonged boiling influenced parent fluids. In contrast, the presence of coarsely crystalline bands, made up of subhedral to euhedral quartz grains, infers primary crystal growth from solution; evidenced by the occurrence of growth-zoned quartz within these bands. There is a narrow range of 3.3ë in d18Oquartz between maximum and minimum isotopic values for the deposit. Significant overlap in d18Oquartz values are observed between the Martha and Welcome lodes. However, statistically significant and commonly systematic differences do occur between individual bands analysed in most samples. Temperature fluctuations may be the dominant factor responsible for observed inter-band variation.

This paper analyzes the opinion in Bragg v. Robertson, 72 F.Supp. 2d 642 (S.D. W.Va. 1999), a case which threatens the future of surface mining in West Virginia and which will almost certainly result in new policies or rules that will affect surface mining everywhere. This paper addresses: (1) the jurisdictional bases of the action which relies on the federal surface mining laws to enforce a state mining program; (2) settlement agreements reached in the case that threaten to alter federal policies beyond West Virginia borders; (3) a programmatic environmental impact statement on mountaintop mining being undertaken by the federal government; and (4) an opinion by the Court outlawing excess spoil disposal in intermittent and perennial streams.

NO FEATURE of the annual meeting is considered more important at Institute headquarters than the assembly of delegates from the various local sections and divisions. There the president of the Institute and other officials may learn at first hand what the members are thinking and doing in every part of the country, and the delegates, in turn, may find that head- quarters is not a group of more or less cold-blooded New Yorkers whose primary function is to send out annual bills for $15. This year, the section and division delegates required three sessions to thresh out the matters of common interest: Monday morning and afternoon and Thursday afternoon. They were also guests of the Institute at the Directors' dinner on Tuesday night, and at the Directors' meeting afterward.

Reduced access to knowledgeable workers is creating challenges for operations. We are doing more 4D Operations - dirty, dull, dangerous, and distant. Personnel costs in these environments are high, and it is not always possible to get the people where you need them. Integrated Operations is a strategy to integrate people, process, and technology for faster and better decision making. Adopting an integrated operations approach can help to relocate personnel, improve collaboration, and align objectives to deliver reduced costs and improved performance. In this paper, the authors will highlight the required infrastructure to enable an Integrated Operations platform. Key decision points for enabling this technology for both Greenfield projects and existing mines will be discussed. Furthermore, the benefits and improved return on investment that result from deployment of an Integrated Operations strategy will be presented.

The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) is a practical rock mass classification system for use in design of mine openings. Data can be obtained for this purpose from exploration drill cores if simple geotechnical logging and rock mechanics testing is conducted. The CMRR is an excellent method to quantify rock characteristics for engineering purposes. It bridges the gap between geologic description and engineering design. The CMRR was utilized in the design of a 10,000 fl. long coal belt conveyor tunnel connecting an Eastern Associated Coal Corp. mine and preparation plant in Boone County, West Virginia. Data gathering and analysis techniques are discussed involving the calculation of the CMRR and its application in the design of the tunnel, which was driven through a thin coal bed zone. The preliminary findings have correlated well with actual roof and mining conditions encountered during driving the tunnel and it is concluded the CMRR is an effective method to utilize geologic data from exploration core holes for engineering analysis and design.

"Thermodynamic investigations on fcc solid ternary Fe-Ni-Cr alloys have been performed by means of the computer-aided Knudsen cell mass spectrometry. Ternary T.AP.-series (Thermodynamically adapted power series) are used for the algebraic representation of the thermodynamic excess properties. At 1650 K the molar excess Gibbs energy GE is negative over the whole field of stable fcc phase. The molar heat of mixing HE is exothermic in the predominant part of the fcc phase field. Only between the section with a constant ratio of mole fraction Xcr/XNi = 0.64 and the fcc phase field boundary the HE values are slightly endothermic. The results of this work can be used successfully for phase diagram calculations.IntroductionThermodynamic investigations on multicomponent alloy systems such as the Fe-Ni-Cr ternary system including the three binary boundary systems are very time-wasting and usually beset with considerable experimental difficulties. Additionally, the required experimental equipment is very expansive and the obtained results are not always satistying. Therefore it is understandable that many phase diagram calculations are based only on few experimental values of the molar excess free Gibbs energy GE. Consequently, Kundrat and Elliott [1] as well as Hillert and Qiu [2] used in their reassessments of the phase diagram of the Fe-Ni-Cr system thermodynamic data mainly assumed and/or optimized by means of various reasoning.Lee [3] reported recently, a revision of the used thermodynamic description of the Fe-Ni liquid phase is necessary to obtain a better agreement with the experimental data on the bcc/liquid or fcc/liquid tie lines and liquidus temperatures in the Fe-rich region of the Fe-Ni-Cr ternary system than in the previous assessments. This is 'in full agreement with mass spectrometric investigations of Fe-Ni alloys in the liquid and in the fcc solid phase, published earlier [4,5]. Indeed, phase diagram calculations based upon the molar excess free Gibbs energies GE obtained in these studies yield liquidus and solidus lines in excellent agreement with experimental phase diagram data [5]. Nevertheless, these experimental data have not been considered later on any more, not even in the revision by Lee [3]."
