The project to reopen the Tasmania Mine has centred around efforts to reopen the Hart Shaft to access the high grade reef remaining below the old workings, which extend down to 457 in. Efforts in 1982 and 1987 were frustrated by unstable clay ground around the shaft, which resulted in significant subsidence of the shaft collar and lining. A successful program has since been implemented to solve the problems, stabilize the collar and recover the upper shaft which had collapsed down to 90 m.

Properties of coal which are significant in relation to preparation for carbonization and conversion are reviewed, and existing coal preparation technology which has been used for production of cleaned coal of suitable ash content and petrographic composition for carbonisation, pyrolysis, hydrogenation and similar processes is described. Possibilities for application of this technology to some Australian coal seams is examined briefly. It is concluded that further survey work is required related to the optimization of selective crushing and concentrating operations, with the aim of maximizing production of quality products for carbonisation, etc mainly from Australian seams with only moderate coking characteristics.

In presenting this address I am conscious of the honour that has been paid me in my election to this important office, and I am very aware that I follow, in the position of President, many distinguished men who have led the Institute over the 70 years since its inauguration in Broken Hill in 1893.It is perhaps appropriate tonight that I intend to talk about a metal which recalls the birth-place of the Institute, and is also one with which I have had a direct association throughout the whole of my working career. This metal is Silver.Silver is associated traditionally in everyone's mind with money and silverware, and has always been prized for its natural beauty and elegance. It is today one of the few metals in which world consumption has outstripped production, and the events which have occurred to bring about this situation make an interesting story.In telling this story, I propose firstly to indicate our development as a silver producing country, give an historical review of the metal, trace its use as currency and the factors influencing its price, and then say something of the old and new uses of silver. In a predrained gassy coalmine, ventilation control plays a secondary role to the longwall (LW) goaf drainage systems to safely manage panel return gas levels. Typically, the LW specific gas emission (SGE) estimation models provide anticipated goaf gas emissions and arriving at required gas drainage capacity for various coal production scenarios. A study comparing the various LW goaf gas hole spacing patterns with weekly production rates of up to 270 kt/w of an operating mine with high SGE rates (~20 m3/t) was carried out. The goaf capture efficiency of LW panels ranged from 64 per cent to 85 per cent. For the first time, gas content of upper seam data post LW retreat were used to verify the current SGE prediction models. This study has shown that an average of 50 m goaf spacing is optimal for management of high production retreat gassy LW panels in presence of multiple upper and lower seams with gas emission zone influence reaching up to 200 m above workings. Due to the horizontal stress direction related geotechnical issues, goaf hole failures just behind the LW face is a recurring challenge resulting in significant and immediate increase in LW panel return gas levels. This paper highlights the shortcomings of current SGE prediction models for goaf gas estimation, and evolution of 50 m goaf hole spacing embedded in design process in managing the LW tailgate gas levels.CITATION:Belle, B, 2017. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) have been used for more than 20 years to grind iron ore pellet feed. Besides coarse comminution (crushing), where HPGR are installed upstream of the ball mill, there are numerous flow sheets where HPGR are used after ball milling and dewatering for re- or finish grinding.There is a clear growing interest in grinding of pellet feed with HPGR during the last few years. In addition to their known advantages of low specific energy consumption, high availability, low steel consumption and improved pelletising processes the lower environmental load (reduced or no water consumption) became a strong driving factor for the application of HPGR in pellet feed grinding.This growing demand increases the interest in better understanding of the HPGR grinding process with fine iron ore concentrates. One of the most important process parameters is the moisture content of the feed material which influences the performance of the HPGR enormously. The HPGR can react to fluctuations of the fresh feed properties to a certain degree by adjusting grinding force and roller speed. Nevertheless, there are limitations by the physics of the compression process and the capability of water absorption by the concentrate. The capability varies for different concentrates and different specific surface areas. Dust sampling is pivotal in estimating the ‘dose’ of dust exposure and in deriving dose-response curves in epidemiological studies. Over the last half century, gravimetric sampling has been the fundamental means for dust exposure monitoring using recognised respirable size-selective standards. In Australia, a gravimetric sampling technique has been followed since 1983 using the Higgins-Dewell (HD) type cyclones (AS2985). The re-emergence of ‘Black Lung’ or Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis (CWP) in Queensland, Australia has re-kindled the need for better understanding of personal dust monitoring, compliance determination, accuracy, timeliness of sampling results and dust control systems. Reporting dust levels in real time empowers miners and operators to take immediate action to avoid being exposed to excessive airborne dust. Two decades of intensive research in the USA has led to the introduction of gravimetric based continuous personal dust monitors (CPDMs) called PDM3700 as compliance tools. The new real-time mass based sensor is a continuous mass based dust monitor using the Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) principle and is regarded as significantly superior to the current gravimetric sampling methodology.Recently the overall respirable dust standard in USA coalmines has been reduced from the historic 2.0 to 1.5 mg/m3. This paper provides the results of a comparative pairwise study of an existing gravimetric sampler and the PDM3700 carried out in 3 different Australian underground mines. The field results consistently suggest that there is a significant ‘measurement bias’ between the current gravimetric HD sampler and the PDM3700 monitor operated using a similar HD type cyclone. The results show that the currently used cyclone measurements are approximately 59 per cent higher than the ‘auditable’ PDM3700 monitor data at the current compliance limit of 3 mg/m3. Based on a review of the extensive data collected, the differences can in part be attributed to the aerosol size selectivity of the samplers with the current gravimetric sampler used in mines, collecting more larger sized particles (D90 of 15 µm). This finding has significant consequences for historic exposure results and their use in medical surveillance programs, as well as the current approach to non-compliance determination.CITATION:Belle, B, 2017. An examination is made of some of the consequences of a magmatic gas phase developed during a late stage of differentiation of an acidic magma. Elements possessing halides with high partial pressures (Sn, Mo, W) may be removed from the magma by distillation into gas bubbles in the manner suggested by Fenner (1933). The common chalcophile elements are not affected by this mechanism, but form sulphides which may become attached to rising gas bubbles by one of three distinct mechanisms. The gas bubbles may then carry the sulphides upwards and concentrate them in some favourable locus, giving rise to an ore-forming fluid. The process would operate selectively upon different sulphides and is capable of providing an explanation of the paragenetic succession observed in ore deposits as well as other important geological criteria of ore genesis.INTRODUCTIONThere is a widespread belief among contemporary geologists that a large and important class of ore deposits is genetically related in some way·to acidic igneous rocks. This class includes the tin-tungsten-molybdenum-bismuth type of mineralization as well as a variety of sulphide deposits.A basic problem confronting explanation of the genesis of these deposits is the manner in which trace elements which were originally widely dispersed in granitic magmas were segregated therefrom and concentrated into economic mineral deposits.The principles underlying the formation of one group of minerals deposits (pegmatites) related to granitic magmas ate reasonably well understood, largely due to the labours of Goldschmidt and his school. "In this study, physical, chemical and microscopic characteristics of high phosphorus oolitic hematite were studied firstly. Based on which, the new methods of high phosphorus hematite used in the æsolid state reduction by rotary hearth furnace - magnetic separationÆ and iron nugget by rotary hearth furnace direct reduction processes were discussed. The results showed that high temperature, low basicity and high carbon content is conducive for the apatite in iron ore to reduce into molten iron, but not conducive to the removal of phosphorus. Through optimisation of process parameters, dephosphorisation rate of high phosphorus hematite is more than 60 per cent by æsolid state reduction roasting-magnetic separationÆ process while that is up to 80 per cent by iron nugget process. The design of excavations in high displacement mining environments requires consideration of both the load and displacement capacity of the ground reinforcement and support systems. This paper is a case study on the design of point anchored rebar bolts using laboratory tests and field trials at the Ridgeway Deeps block cave. A laboratory testing program was carried out to measure the mechanical properties of the Strata Control Systems R27 Secura resin bolt which is currently being installed on the extraction and undercut level at the Ridgeway Deeps block cave. The aim was to quantify elastic, plastic and energy parameters for various bolt, mesh and plate systems. Experiments were performed on bar segments, bolt/plate systems, and bolt/plate/mesh/resin systems. The mechanical properties were calculated from tensile tests with a 500 kN Avery machine. Load-displacement data was collected from four different testing configurations. The laboratory results are compared with underground measurements and observations of bolt performance.

A subsurface study of the Maria Lode and associated hydrothermal alteration of andesites within the Karangahake epithermal gold-silver deposit defined the local evolutionary sequence in the once active geothermal system.   Some implications for mining of epithermal deposits arise as a result.

The Huntly West Mine has undergone significant changes in the last two years, which will affect the remainder of the mine's life. The paper describes the evolvement of plans and an overview of the technical considerations made in planning for and implementing the first New Zealand longwall operation. The technical investigations involve the longwall equipment, exploration, ventilation and strata control. The focus on these areas was to ensure that unacceptable project risks were addressed. Implementation of longwall mining at West Mine is planned in three phases, Development, Panel One extraction trial, and Full Longwall operation.   At present the development phase is complete, longwall installation is in progress and production start-up is planned for the end of August, 1991.

A field method combining solvent extraction and paper partition chromatography permits a simple and rapid semiquantitative estimation of gold in siliceous, argillaceous and sulphide ores. The method will facilitate the eyaluation of prospect samples in which the gold is too fine for separation by panning.Ethyl alcohol-hydrobromic acid mixtures are suitable for chromatographic development of the gold complex, and give clear reproducible definition of the gold zone. Substitution of commercial "methylated spirits" for the ethyl alcohol gives equally good definition, improving the potential of the method for field use.A batch of six samples in the range of 0·5 to 5·0 dwt/ton can be completed in two hours. The range may be extended by simple modification to higher or lower values.INTRODUCTIONIn a chromatographic method described previously (Lever 1958, Nevill and Lever 1959), gold from a standard volume of ore clamped between -plate glass was extracted by aqua regia on to the paper. After cautious drying the chromatogram was developed by an ethyl acetate-nitric acid-water mixture and gold was identified by spraying with stannous chloride solution. Sensitivity of the method in the low range was poor. The brown line obtained in the 1-3 dw/j ton range, caused by movement of gold in the reduced form, was not considered to be a satisfactory confirmation of the presence of gold. It was felt that the method would be improved by using a more elegant extraction and applying developing conditions which would produce a well defined purple line at all gold values. Lower Miocene Maryville Coal Measures at Waitewhena Coalfield, in the Taranaki coal region, include seams of sub-bituminous coal up to 4 m thick. During coalfield exploration Fletcher Challenge Ltd drilled ten cored holes, all of which encountered at least one seam. Coal quality is variable. Ash ranges from six to 12 per cent and sulphur from 0.5 to three per cent. A basal seam, overlying the Lower Mokau Sandstone, appears to extend throughout the area under investigation. A rider seam, of variable thickness, closely overlies the main seam in most drillholes. The rider converges with the main seam to the north and vertical trends in coal properties suggest that the seams are united in some locations. A less extensive seam sometimes occurs at the top of the coal measures beneath the Upper Mokau Sandstone. The lithostratigraphy of the intervening coal measures is complex, and coexistence of fluviodeltaic, lagoonal/lacustrine, and marine depositional environments is provisionally inferred. Lateral variations in coal properties (clastic derived ash, volatile matter, inertinite, hydrogen), thickness of the sedimentary parting between the basal seam and rider, texture of the coal measure sediments, and distribution of the upper seam all indicate persistence of a relatively low lying northeast-trending zone which may have been structurally controlled. Available data indicate that coal measure accumulation was terminated by marine transgression from north to south.

The primary object of the drive is to provide sites for gaining information regarding the behaviour of the ore-bodies well beyond the limits of the present exposures.Due to thermal conditions, the major portion of the work was done on a six-hour shift basis, in contrast to the normal one of seven hours, with a five-day week.

The National Economic Viewpoint? Any substantial project undertaken by private enterprise would normally be subjected to a Discounted Cash Flow analysis of its commercial viability, and would proceed only if the rate of return was judged satisfactory. A 'national viewpoint' analysis attempts to do the same but from the viewpoint of the community as a whole. The objective is to ensure that those projects are undertaken which yield the best return, economic and social, to the nation as a whole.

Knowledge of true block grades is obtained from a mathematical model of an orebody, simulated with sample grades normally distributed and spatially correlated according io a spherical semi-variogram model.The superiority of kriging to the polygonal method of estimation is demonstrated on this modelled deposit by comparing the true values with the kriged and polygonal estimates obtained from sampling the deposit. Finally, selection of blocks of the deposit on the basis of the estimated values, shows that if kriging is used, what is predicted is largely mined, whilst if the polygonal method is used large biases can occur depending on the position of the cut-off grade.

The Domain and Burnley Tunnels, which are major features of the Melbourne City Link Project, are MelbourneÆs first road tunnels. They are 1.6 km and 3.5 km in length respectively and are being constructed through a variety of ground conditions. Deeper sections of the tunnels have been driven through the Silurian mudstone which underlies Melbourne. Other shallower sections of the tunnels pass through a variety of ground conditions including silts, sands, clay and rock and have been constructed using both top-down and bottom-up cut and cover construction techniques. The Yarra River Crossing is a 140 m length of the Domain Tunnel which crosses under the Yarra River on a relatively shallow alignment. The crossing of the river using cut and cover techniques was identified in the early stages of design development as being one of the most challenging stages of the works on the Southern Link. The prevalence of varying geological conditions combined with the need for maintained traffic and stream flow conditions provided a demanding and often conflicting set of criteria for which there appeared to be no one clear solution. A team of designers, constructors, estimators and specialist contractors were involved in a concept evaluation and risk analysis study spanning a period of approximately 12 months. During this study, four concepts were considered as likely contenders. This paper provides a brief outline of the four concepts addressing their relative merits, disadvantages and risks followed by a detailed description of the adopted solution, namely top-down construction using secant pile walling (east bank) and bottom-up in situ construction (west bank).

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Ore-bearing intrusions in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) were examined from nine mines: Boshekul, Nurkazgan, Kounrad, Borly, Aktogai, Koksai, Baogutu, Tuwu and Erdenet. The intrusions are diorite, granodiorite and tonalite with SiO2 contents ranging from 58 to 75 wt per cent, and show mildly fractionated rare earth elements (REE) ([LREE]N/[HREE]N = 2.7–4.7) – light REE and heavy REE – and varying Eu anomalies ([Eu]/[Eu]* = 0.58–1.4). The ratios of Sr/Y vary from 7.9 to 115 and the contents of Y from 4.6 to 23.9 ppm. The parental magmas of the intrusions are intrinsically oxidised. Zircon grains in the ore-bearing rocks from large- and intermediate-sized porphyry Cu deposits show high Ce4+/Ce3+ ratios characterised by 65–422 at Boshekul (>4.1 Mt Cu), 76–480 at Kounrad (>4.8 Mt Cu), 90–280 at Aktogai (>12 Mt Cu), 80–250 at Erdenet (>11 Mt Cu) 74–370 at Nurkazgan (>3.9 Mt Cu), 100–210 at Koksai (>1.6 Mt Cu), and 71–340 at Tuwu (~2.0 Mt Cu). In two small deposits, the ore-bearing rocks display low values of Ce4+/Ce3+; Borly (0.6 Mt Cu) ranging from 28 to 158, and Baogutu (0.6 Mt Cu) from 29 to 113. The Ce4+/Ce3+ ratio of 120 distinguishes large intermediate-size deposits from small-size deposits. The importance of the Broken Hill mining field may be gauged from the fact that since the discovery of the ore-body in 1883, till the end of 1931, approximately 43,000,000 tons of ore have been raised.The lode covers a length of 31 miles, and in places is upwards of 300 ft. in width. The ore, as at present mined, consists of an intimately blended mixture of lead and zinc sulphides with silver and gangue minerals.Structurally the lode conveys the impression of a huge longitudinal arch (when viewed from the east or west), having its apex or crown near the centre of the field, in the leases of the Broken, Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., where the lode outcropped at the surface.The minimum depth of the lode in the Proprietary mine was some 500 ft. from the surface, but huge undulations, having an average pitch of 45°, carry the extensions of the arch gradually deeper, to those places where active stoping operations are now in progress in the workings of the North mine at one extremity, and the South and Zinc Corporation mines at the other. The depth of the lode from the surface, as exposed at present, is approximately 1700 ft. at these extremities.The structure and physical character of the ore-body, and its containing walls, are so complex and varied that almost every type of mining problem is met with.
